    appleinsider.com
Ahead of the expected February 19, 2025 launch of the iPhone SE 4, there are signs that previous claims of it being renamed may be true.iPhone SE 4 is rumored to resemble iPhone 14In early January 2025, a seemingly unlikely leak claimed that the iPhone SE 4 would be renamed the iPhone 16E. It was chiefly considered doubtful because of the source of the leaks, but there was also that "iPhone SE' has been a successful brand since 2016.Now Bloomberg is backing up the claim of a rebrand, and doing so chiefly because of the phrasing Tim Cook used in his teaser tweet about a February 19 launch. • YouTube TV has a deal to keep Paramount content
    www.theverge.com
Days after YouTube published a blog post saying it could lose Paramount content soon, it updated the post to announce a deal to keep it. The company posted on X that, as a result, channels such as CBS, CBS Sports, and Nickelodeon and add-ons like Paramount Plus, Showtime, and BET Plus will stick around after all. The company had said in its post on February 12th that it would offer an $8 credit if Paramount content was unavailable for an extended period of time, but updated the next day to say talks had been extended. YouTube TV didnt elaborate further on its new deal or how it could affect pricing. Responding to questions on X about whether it will raise prices as a result of the deal, the TeamYouTube account replied, We take these decisions very seriously & will be sure to communicate any potential changes in the future before they happen.Members, were happy to share that weve reached a deal to continue carrying Paramount content on YouTube TV. That means you still have access to channels like CBS, CBS Sports, and Nickelodeon. Add-ons like Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and BET+ also remain uninterrupted. YouTube TV (@YouTubeTV) February 16, 2025YouTube TV increased its subscription by $10 a month to $82.99 in December. The new price is in keeping with recent increases from similar services like Fubo, Hulu Plus Live TV, and Sling TV as customers continue to shift from cable to streaming and content makers look for ways to keep revenue going. YouTube did not immediately respond to The Verges request for more information.

Hi, friends! Welcome to Installer No. 71, your guide to the best and Verge-iest stuff in the world. (If youre new here, welcome, happy long weekend to all those allowed to celebrate, and also you can read all the old editions at the Installer homepage.) This week, Ive been reading about Alan Turing and OnlyFans and street booze and convenience stores, dusting off my Fortnite skills for the first time in a while, reading The Ministry of Time, working up the courage to make air fryer donuts, trying out a Sony ZV-1 M2 as my webcam, catching up on The White Lotus before season 3 starts, trying Anybox as a bookmarking / note-taking app, and seeing if the Simplify Gmail extension will make me like email more. I also have for you a place to watch all the best SNL sketches, a great new pair of Beats headphones, a new drawing tablet for creators of all kinds, a fun-sounding sci-fi movie on Apple TV Plus, and much more.Oh, and thanks to everyone who sent in music thoughts last week! I got a ton of good responses, and to be completely honest, I havent been able to properly read and respond to everything yet. That means next weeks gonna be a big, huge, music-setup extravaganza, and that means if you have thoughts on music services, favorite music gadgets, apps you love, a deep love for Victrolas, or anything else, youve still got time to tell me all about it. Hit me up!All right, big streaming weekend ahead. Lets do this.(As always, the best part of Installer is your ideas and tips. What do you want to know more about? What awesome tricks do you know that everyone else should? What app should everyone be using? Tell me everything: installer@theverge.com. And if you know someone else who might enjoy Installer, tell them to subscribe here.)The DropSNL50. I am very excited for the the concert on Saturday night, but I might be even more excited about this Peacock landing page. Its just playlist after playlist of iconic sketches, monologues, and musical performances you could easily spend your whole weekend just watching these clips. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. All the useful Apple-y features of AirPods Pros, but in cooler colors and with earhooks that actually keep the buds in my ears. I bought a pair in the (slightly boring but thats the point) quick sand color, and Im very happy with my purchase. I do wish the mic was a little better, though. The Witcher: Sirens of The Deep. I havent really dug into the whole Witcher Netflix-verse, after hearing so many mixed things about the show. But this, an animated movie with none of the baggage but all of the cool monster-hunting, sounds like my kind of thing. The Wacom Intuos Pro. Easily the biggest thing to happen to drawing tablets in, I dont know, a decade? I like the idea of putting the controls at the top and making them more tactile, and I like that theyre a little smaller and slimmer, but I do wonder how many yearslong workflows are going to need some time to adjust. The Gorge. I like the premise of this movie so much two people on either side of a huge, deep, fog-filled gorge, tasked with protecting the world from whatever is down there, and also something something love story that I dont really care that the reviews arent great. (Or that Apple TV Plus movies mostly suck.) Im here for this one.Apple TV Plus for Android. And oh, look, a new way to watch The Gorge! Apple obviously timed this launch for Severances comeback and the upcoming MLS season, but its a big win for subscribers and a long overdue move from Apple.Apple Cider Vinegar. On Netflix, this is the rare show my wife and I are equally into about influencer culture and the lengths people will go to get likes. Along with An Update on Our Family and a few others, were building a deeply bleak genre here.Is This Seat Taken?RollerCoaster Tycoon is fun and funny and extremely easy to get lost in. Its sucking me in the way Balatro did, which is terrifying and great.Routine for Android. Ive been watching Routine for a while, and its shaping into a really powerful (if slightly convoluted) app for notes, tasks, calendars, and more. The Android app isnt quite fully featured yet, but itll get there, and its one to try out.I play with a lot of gadgets. (Perk of the job.) But Sean Hollister? Sean Hollister plays with a lot of gadgets. Whether hes toying with stuff for his awesome video series or taking things apart with wildly complicated Apple tools, I am perpetually jealous of his gadget adventures. Like, just the other day: double magnetic rings! Never seen em before, want em real bad!I asked Sean to share his homescreen with us, because I figured Id probably discover a bunch of cool new stuff that way, too. Heres his homescreen, plus some info on the apps he uses and why:The phone: Galaxy Z Flip 5.The wallpaper: The bog-standard stock wallpaper. I dont even know if it has a name. The apps: Openvibe, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, NewsBlur, Yelp, Google Photos, The Verge, Slack, Evernote, MyFitnessPal, Discord, Chrome, Gmail, Google Calendar, Home Assistant, Phone, Messages, Camera, Google Maps.Youre looking at the homescreen of an information junkie in transition the clues are all there. First, Im down to just 36 percent battery at 4:25PM and Ive barely used this phone today so Im actively looking for my next phone.Second, Ive got four social media clients up top because Ive been hedging my bets on which to keep you might notice Ive got notifications from X, but no X on the homescreen, because I only still follow a handful of accounts there for news! Instead, The Verge gets its own dedicated shortcut.Third, the reason Signal and Messenger are in an ugly drawer together and Facebook has 54 unreads is because Im trying to reduce my support for Meta after certain, ahem, societal shifts, but havent fully managed it yet.The key apps on this homescreen are actually MyFitnessPal, which Im using almost every day just as a calorie counter to actually lose weight; Evernote, where far too much of my memory lives; and Home Assistant for controlling things around my house. Of course the first two apps are getting far too bloated with unwanted features, and my smart home has a tendency to break! Not pictured: Pokmon TCG Pocket, which I recently moved to the fifth homescreen to reduce addiction.I also asked Sean to share a few things hes into right now. Heres what he sent back:Oh, its catch-up season for me! Im playing 1000xResist, which made Polygons best of 2024, and watching The OA, which I missed the first time around. I guess theyre similar in a way: theyre both bizarre works of science fiction with intriguing, nuanced, relatable villains.Oh, and fairly new K-drama When The Phone Rings, whose first episode absolutely bored me until I saw how cleverly they hid the twist, and now its one of the more exciting ones Ive watched. Dont Google it if you can help it, even a one-sentence synopsis will spoil episode 1.Meanwhile, I cant get enough of the Game Boy modding antics of Hairo Satoh, aka haihaisb, who has repeatedly proven that everythings better with an extra Game Boy Advance SP screen. If youre reading this, Satoh-san, we want to interview you about how you do it!CrowdsourcedHeres what the Installer community is into this week. I want to know what youre into right now as well! JulesAs the topic of digital self-determination is more and more a topic (yes, here in Germany too), I was looking into different OSes for my mobile phone. I found a rather good working alternative to Googles Android and iOS which is called /e/OS. It works really well, and I can still use all my apps. And they sell phones with pre-installed /e/. ChristianPlayed a lot of this game called Hole. The name is unfortunate, but its cheap and a very good time. SophieI dont know if a lot of people care about this but Notion and TickTick have a two-way integration and its great!! I still feel its limited in functionality because I can only send one list at a time, which doesnt make sense, and its limited to three lists. • Gurman: Apple exploring search advertising in Apple Maps
    9to5mac.com
According to Mark Gurmans Power On newsletter, Apple is once again considering monetizing its Maps app with search ads. The company already does this with its News and Stocks apps. The goal is to boost its in-house advertising business. This isnt the first time Apple has looked into this idea. Gurman reports that Apple looked into integrated search ads a couple years ago, where companies could pay for more favorable search ranking:A few years ago, Apple employees exploredintegrating search ads into itsMaps apps. It would work similarly to Google Maps, where a businesscould pay Apple to have their restaurant or venue appear higher in search results. Now, the idea is back in Apples mind. In a recent hands on meeting, the idea of monetization being explored came up once again, specifically with search ads. Gurman also floats the idea of certain locations appearing more prominently on the map. There isnt any timeline for when search ads for Apple Maps may roll out. Engineering for such an effort hasnt even begun yet. However, the company is certainly planning how they might approach such a change. What do you think about search ads coming to the Apple Maps app? • Apple reportedly launching refreshed Studio Display by 2026
    9to5mac.com
According to Bloombergs Mark Gurman, Apple is ramping up development on a Studio Display replacement. The company initially debuted this monitor in 2022 and has left it untouched since. There isnt much word on whatll be new with this Studio Display refresh, but itll apparently be a companion to the upcoming M5 MacBook Pros.Early last week, display supply chain expert Ross Young reported that Apple is working on a new Studio Display with mini-LED display tech, and now Mark Gurman from Bloomberg is backing that:Im told that Apple is currently testing prototypes of a display code-named J427 that should arrive by 2026. It will be a successor to the current Studio Display, rather than the Pro Display XDR, and features a design thats similar to the 2022 model.Gurmans reporting is light on details, though he does provide one interesting insight on Apples higher end monitor, the Pro Display XDR. After its release in 2019, the company has all but abandoned it. It lacks many features that the newer (and cheaper) Studio Display offer, such as a webcam, built in speakers, and a more affordable built-in stand.Despite this fact though, it doesnt seem like Apple has a second gen Pro Display XDR in the pipeline. Gurman reports that a new version is less of a priority for Apple. However, Apple remains committed to the professional market, and Gurman reaffirms that new Mac Pro and Mac Studio models are in the pipeline. He also mentions that the company will probably work on a larger-than-24-inch iMac eventually. My favorite Apple accessories on Amazon:Follow Michael:X/Twitter,Bluesky,InstagramAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Cybertruck Driver Was Blasted on Booze and Cocaine in Deadly Crash
    futurism.com
The New AcceleratorJust after 3 a.m. on November 29, 2024, a Cybertruck carrying four recent high schools grads careened off the highway and crashed into a tree in Piedmont, California. The vehicle caught fire, filling the cabin with smoke. Three of the teens died from asphyxiation, while another escaped with severe burns thanks to the help of a bystander. It's the deadliest incident to occur in a Cybertruck so far, and a new toxicology report might help explain why: both the driver and passengers had unusually high levels of alcohol and cocaine in their blood. Before anyone writes this off as an unfortunate-if-simple drunk driving accident, there are several factors to keep in mind.First, consider the fact that less than half a percent of vehicles catch fire in a given year. That's an extremely low number in the grand scheme of things, thankfully, but makes it all the more tragic when one does break out. When it comes to Cybertrucks, however, the numbers ought to be even lower, given that the vehicles run on Tesla's proprietary brand of lithium-ion batteries, rather than combustible gasoline.Yet that's not the case. Including these three in California, there have been five fire-related fatalities reported to involve Cybertrucks since they hit the roads in November of 2023. Accounting for units sold, a recent analysis pointed out, that appears to make them 17 times more deadly than the infamous Ford Pinto, which gained notoriety during the 1970s for a gas tank that would explode if nudged too hard. Remember also that Tesla has issued six factory recalls in the Cybertruck's short life span the latest of which was a "cell denting" electrical issue detected in "many inventory vehicles," according to reporting. In the case of the Piedmont crash, the exact cause of the fire is yet unknown, but that there was a blaze at all in an electric vehicle ought to raise some eyebrows. After all, weren't EVs once said to be much saferthan their gas-guzzling counterparts? But the reality at least for Tesla's EVs hasn't been so sunny. As of 2023, Tesla's vehicles had resulted in 232 fires and 83 fire-related deaths. Relative insurance claim frequencies for Model S and X fires not due to collisions are the highest of all luxury sedans and SUVs, according to a two-year study by the Highway Loss Data Institute. Compared to other luxury vehicles, it's no contest for Tesla; compare 725 relative losses to the car with the second-highest relative claims, Land Rover, which clocked a paltry 132. With that in mind, it's no wonder that issues with Tesla's in-house batteries have been attributed to higher-than-average fire fatalities as far back as 2013.But let's assume the cause of the fire was external we still don't know, after all. And that leaves us with Tesla's notorious doors.Though all of Tesla's EVs have suffered complaints and issues relating to their futuristic door latches, the Cybertruck's might be the most horrifying. While at least two rounds of Cybertruck prototypes contained bulky, physical latches, the consumer models opted instead for a discreet, electronic door opener which blends into the side of the door, both on the inside and out. That might make them look sleek, but the issue comes when the truck's low-voltage system fails and the electronic door opener no longer works a problem which, along with the truck's "bullet-proof windows," has greatly concerned first responders. When the power goes out, thethree-ton vehicle's doors have to be opened manually, as explained by the owner's manual: "In the unlikely event that Cybertruck has no low voltage power," it reads, "you will not be able to open the doors from the interior by pressing the interior door open buttons. Instead, use the manual door releases."The driver's side manual door release is relatively simple, though it blends in with the black door trim. The rear manual release, however, involves peeling two plastic panels away and yanking on a small plastic cord a decidedly difficult task if you're drunk and panicking as the truck's cabin fills with smoke. It's a given that car crashes are notoriously disorienting incidents. But in the case of Piedmont crash, the fact that one passenger was able to escape alive indicates that the impact alone was not enough to knock the riders out completely yet another grim indictment for the Cybertruck.More on Cybertrucks:Terrifying Footage Shows Cybertruck on Self-Driving Mode Swerve Into Oncoming TrafficShare This Article
