  • Liquid Swords confirms layoffs after pledging to implement 'sustainable work model'
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Chris Kerr, News EditorFebruary 17, 20251 Min ReadImage via Liquid SwordsLiquid Swords is laying off an undisclosed number of employees to "adapt to current business conditions."The Swedish studio was established by former Avalanche Studios CCO and founder Christofer Sundberg in 2020. Its debut title is being pitched as a "narrative-driven, open-world, hardboiled triple-A revenge story, built and developed in Unreal Engine 5."A statement issued by the studio indicates the project remains in development, but that layoffs are necessary to deliver "long-term sustainability.""I promised our employees and shareholders success and to build a studio redefining game development with a small, expert-driven team and a sustainable work model," said Sundberg."While we achieved much of this, shifting market conditions prevented us from succeeding within our timeframe. As a result, we must part ways with talented individuals who have been instrumental in our journey. This is incredibly difficult, but we remain committed to our vision and will continue to work on our IP and first game with a dedicated team."An FAQ on the studio website indicates Liquid Swords intended to scale to 100 workers by early 2024, although it's unclear whether that target was achieved. Those expansion plans were announced after NetEase made an undisclosed investment into the studio to help realize its vision of implementing a "quality-focused approach to game development." That, apparently, remains the goal."Despite these regrettable changes, Liquid Swords remains focused on Sundberg's vision of simplifying the game development process to create exceptional gaming experiences for players," continues the statement."The studio is confident that this extremely unfortunate setback will not prevent it from realizing its original ambition."Read more about:LayoffsAbout the AuthorChris KerrNews Editor, GameDeveloper.comGame Developer news editor Chris Kerr is an award-winning journalist and reporter with over a decade of experience in the game industry. • X is blocking links to Signal
    www.theverge.com
X users are currently unable to post links to Signal.me, which are used to quickly and securely send direct messages to Signal users. A variety of failure notifications are being reported when X users attempt to post Signal links on the platform, some of which identify the blocked message as containing spam, harmful content, or malicious activity. When my colleague tried, he was met with an error message saying something went wrong, but dont fret lets give it another shot. The issue was first reported by Matt Binder, who notes that only Signal.me links appear to be impacted. Links to the Signal.org domain do not appear to be blocked, nor do similar services like Telegram.Signal is notably used by journalists to receive confidential information from sources, reassured by the knowledge that messages are end-to-end encrypted and stored on-device. The messaging service has become especially relevant in recent weeks as a tool for federal whistleblowers to report DOGE activity to the press.Alongside being blocked from sharing Signal.me links in public posts and direct messages, users are also discouraged from clicking existing links published prior to the ban, and prevented from adding them to their profile bio. An error message displayed when the latter is attempted says the update failed due to the new description being considered malware. It wouldnt be the first time that X has attempted to stifle third-party services being promoted on the platform. Links to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, and other rival social platforms were briefly blocked in 2022 after Elon Musk attempted to tackle relentless advertising of competitors for free. Substack links were also throttled and restricted in 2023 after it released its own Twitter-like Notes feature. These situations differ, however, as Signal isnt a direct competitor to X. We have asked X if Signal links are being intentionally blocked and will update this story if we hear back. Signal user handles can still be published on X at the time of writing, which can be copied and pasted into the Signal app as a workaround.See More:

  • PSA: Days Gone Remastered $10 PS5 Upgrade Not Available for Game Redemptions via PS Plus
    www.ign.com
Days Gone Remastered was one of the standout announcements during Sonys recent State of Play showcase, but some PlayStation Plus subscribers arent happy about its $10 upgrade.Sony has confirmed that the $10 upgrade to the remastered version on PlayStation 5 is only available to those who own the PlayStation 4 disc or a digital copy of Days Gone. Game redemptions via subscription service PS Plus, therefore, are not eligible for the $10 upgrade to the PS5 remaster.(Days Gone was available on the now defunct PS Plus Collection and was an Essential monthly game in April 2021.)This means those who own Days Gone via PS Plus will have to pay the full $49.99 to play this new PS5 version of the game. The detail of the $10 upgrade has caused some PS Plus subscribers to venture online to complain. A post on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, for example, is packed with comments from subscribers who say they would have paid $10 to upgrade to the PS5 remaster, but now will skip the game entirely. They would actually have made a decent chunk of change if PS Plus players were eligible, even if most didnt want to play it theyd at least be interested in paying 10 bucks to try it out for an hour or two, suggested squarejellyfish_.They should let Essentials upgrade cause I would pay the $10, but I will not buy it any other way, added teckn9ne79. I will stick with the one I got.Yeah this seems pretty stupid, said dredizzle99. There's no way I'm paying full price for this, but I'd happily pay for the upgrade at least just to check it out. Surely the majority of people that have it on PS plus are thinking the same thing, so they're basically losing all the potential sales from them."They gave away the game for free so every copy is an extra 10/$10 they wouldn't have had but they decided to be awkward instead and cut out half the owner base," jackanyon95 said. "I'm not paying full price, it didn't even need a remaster."Those who own Days Gone via PS Plus miss out on the $10 upgrade. Image credit: Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, its worth pointing out that some PS Plus subscribers arent surprised by Sonys strategy here, and have pointed out the company will have crunched the numbers and determined this restriction will make the most sense financially. Still, Sony is currently being called stingy by some of its hardcore fans who had hoped for a rare spot of generosity from PlayStation.Days Gone Remastered wasnt the only new PlayStation game revealed at State of Play. • Overwatch 2 Dev Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals Competition, Says Its Never Faced Another Game So Similar to the One We've Created
    www.ign.com
Marvel Rivals was, from the moment it was revealed, compared to Overwatch. Taken at face value, Marvel Rivals is remarkably similar to Blizzards game; while Marvel Rivals uses Marvel heroes and villains for its playable characters, it is, like Overwatch, a competitive multiplayer hero shooter with some remarkably similar mechanics and gameplay systems. Both Marvel Heroes and Overwatch 2 are free-to-play, monetized as live services, and lean on the addition of new characters to keep things feeling fresh.Marvel Rivals has enjoyed explosive popularity since launching in December, and it is speculated that this has come at the cost of interest in Overwatch 2. Blizzards game, according to the current narrative, is dwindling as NetEases Marvel Rivals gobbles up its players. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller discussed the new reality Blizzard finds itself in, with Marvel Rivals now out in the wild and attracting tens of millions of players.Overwatch 2 Perks"We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created," Keller said.Youd think this would be a bad thing for Overwatch, then, but Keller called the situation exciting, and even said it was really great to see Marvel Rivals take ideas established by Overwatch in a different direction.Still, Keller admitted Marvel Rivals success had forced a change in attitude within Blizzard when it comes to Overwatch 2, saying: this is no longer about playing it safe."To that end, Blizzard has announced radical changes coming to Overwatch 2 in 2025. While the roadmap ahead includes much of what you'd expect to see in terms of new content, the core gameplay itself will see a seismic shift, including the additions of hero perks and the return of loot boxes. All eyes will be on Overwatch 2 to see if these changes spark a resurgence in interest. We're now nearly nine years out from the debut of Overwatch in 2016, and two-and-a-half from the launch of Overwatch 2. And while Blizzard does not make Overwatch player numbers public, we can see concurrent player numbers on Steam are as low as theyve ever been since Overwatch 2 launched on Valves platform in 2023, with a 37,046 concurrent player peak over the last 24 hours.Marvel Rivals, meanwhile, remains a top 10 most-played game on Steam, with a 310,287 concurrent player peak over the last 24 hours.Overwatch 2 still has a mostly negative user review rating on Steam. Indeed, in August 2023, Overwatch 2 became the worst user-reviewed game on Steam ever. Most of the negative reviews focused on monetization after Blizzard was heavily-criticised for forcing its premium predecessor to update into a free-to-play sequel, rendering the original Overwatch unplayable, back in 2022. Overwatch 2 subsequently endured a number of controversies including the cancellation of its long-awaited PvE Hero mode the one feature, players said, that justified the sequel's existence.IGN has loads more on Marvel Rivals, including the developer's clarification on datamining, and thoughts on the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 version.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. • GTA 6 Release Date Update All But Confirms the Month the Game Will Come Out
    www.denofgeek.com
No upcoming video game is demanding as much attention from both the industry and its customers as the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI. Its the blockbuster open-world title by which all other studios are setting their clocks to. Dont believe us? Just wait until Rockstar Games finally confirms the games release date. Youll see other publishers moving their titles out of GTA 6s faster than you can say Day One patch.Of course, when that release date might be has been the subject of much speculation for years. You could basically call GTA 6 release date speculating an industry unto itself, one thats fed many YouTubers, leakers and scoopers, and social media influencers for almost a decade. But if Rockstar sticks to the games 2025 release window, those folks will soon have to switch back to making Half-Life 3 release date videos again.Of course, Rockstar confirmed that release window in late 2023, and then went silent for all of 2024, igniting even more speculation and rumors. Some have even said the game could miss 2025 and end up on the 2026 slate for Take-Two, Rockstars parent company. But Rockstar and Take-Two have recently debunked those rumors, confirming that, yes, youll have your new Grand Theft Auto this year, gamers. We may even finally know approximately when this year the game will finally hit shelves, thanks to another game announcement from Take-Two.Earlier this month, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke with Variety, confirming to the trade that GTA 6 would definitely arrive in Fall 2025: Weve announced a pretty narrow window. So I think our view is that right now, thats fine. And then when its appropriate, of course, Rockstar is going to have more to say.Rockstar hasnt said much of anything since then, but this week Take-Two made another announcement during a PlayStation State of Play broadcast that signaled when exactly in that Fall 2025 window well finally get to play GTA 6. During the stream, Take-Two announced that Borderlands 4, another one of its heavy-hitter franchises (but nowhere near as big as GTA) is launching on Sept. 23, all but confirming that GTA 6 wont release in September. Why? Because theres no way Take-Two wants to eclipse another one of its flagship products with the release of what will very likely be the biggest game of the decade. So, as Kotaku also predicts, that really only leaves an October release date for GTA 6, as a new Call of Duty traditionally releases in November. Again, GTA 6 is a pop culture event unlike any other in gaming, so even a yearly mega-franchise should cower in fear at the prospect of launching in the same month as a new Rockstar game, BUT it also makes sense for Take-Two to give its presumed best-selling title of all-time the clearest runway possible, ceding November to Activisions behemoth.Rockstar also released its last game, Red Dead Redemption 2, in October 2018, which doesnt necessarily mean anything, but the date worked really well for the Western action game, so itd make sense that Take-Two would go back to that playbook again this time around. Whenever the game does come out, itll follow Lucia and her male partner in a Bonnie and Clyde-like story set in fictional state of Leonidabased on Floridawhere Vice City is located. Along the way, youll almost definitely run into Florida Man.

  • The Biggest Star Trek Questions the Franchise Still Hasnt Answered
    www.denofgeek.com
Star Trek is a franchise built on exploration and discovery. Kirk, Picard, and other captains face the unknown ready to learn, equipped with more questions than answers. While that inquisitive spirit deserves admiration, it does sometimes make for frustrating viewing. Over the decades, Star Trek has brought up more than a few questions it never answered, creating dangling plot threads.Unsurprisingly, some of these questions do get answered in comics and novels. But those tend to be non-canon and subject to revision in later movies and television shows. So these are the biggest questions that the shows and movies havent answered, questions that might lead to compelling stories later on.1. Is Trelane a Q?In the season one Original Series episode The Squire of Gothos, Kirk gets teleported to a playful, all-powerful figure called Trelane. Paying no mind to Kirks protestations, Trelane keeps engaging new games, having lots of fun with archaic Earth phrases and a sense of faux adventure. However, things later turn serious when Trelane decides to put Kirk and the crew on trial, judging them according to a standard that only he understands. An all-powerful being? Games that annoy the Captain? A trial? All of those qualities describe Q as much as they do Trelane, leading many fans to wonder if Trelane is a member of the Q continuum. But while Q and aspects of his people do show up throughout various Star Trek projects, the question of whether Trelane of the Q never gets answered. Mariner and Beckett make a passing reference that connects Trelane to the Q in the Strange New Worlds episode Those Old Scientists, and the Peter David novel Q-Squared explicitly names Trelane as a member of the Q Continuum, but thats not canon. Mainline Star Trek has never again checked in on the Squire of Gothos.2. How Many Siblings Does Spock Have Anyway?Like most things in the first season of TOS, Spocks background and family tree are unfurled slowly. But by the time of The Motion Picture, we get the gist: hes the son of a Vulcan father and human mother, who respects Vulcan culture but cannot push himself to purge his human emotions. Then, Star Trek V introduces Spocks half-brother Sybok, the product of Sareks forbidden relationship with a princess, a guy whose embrace of emotion over logic gets him banished from Vulcan. Decades later, Star Trek: Discovery introduces Michael Burnham, Spocks foster sister who is raised by Sarek and Amanda after the death of her parents. So, just what is going on under Sareks roof? Vulcans have long lifespans and their devotion to logic means they dont always feel compelled to mention things like family members. But by this point, Spocks background feels so improbable that its surprising no ones sat down and explained it all, anything to prevent Sybok and Michaels relationship to Spock feel like lazy attempts to give new characters instant significance.3. What Happened with the Mind-Control Parasites From the TNG Season One Finale?Perhaps the most nagging question on this list comes from the end of The Next Generations first season. In the final episode Conspiracy, Picard learns of a group of bad actors within the Federation trying to take control of the organization. Bad admirals are a dime a dozen within Starfleet, but this group involved lower-ranked personnel too, demanding further investigation.Eventually, Picard and Riker discover that parasitic brain worms had taken control of several Federation members, including Lieutenant Commander Remmick of Starfleet, who held the mother parasite in his body. With a shockingly gory effect, Picard and Riker zap Remmick to kill the creature, but not before it sent a call to others to attack.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Apparently, it didnt work, because when season two begins months later, everyones too worried about Trois sudden pregnancy to think about the parasites. It only comes up again during Rikers clip show hallucinations in Shades of Grey and when conspiracy theorists ranted about butt bugs in Lower Decks, because Lower Decks never forgets.4. What happened to the Starfleet Skant?Speaking of Lower Decks, its kind of shocking that the show only mentions the skant once in passing, never treating us to Boimler in a skant. The skant, of course, is the skirt/short combination uniform memorably sported by male officers in TNGs first season. The skant was, of course, an attempt to update the miniskirt look from TOS and to give it a gender neutral function. So even though Troi became the most prominent skant wearer, men in background shots also had their legs exposed. However, the skant went away after a few episodes. As we see in Lower Decks, Boimler does own a skant, but Mariner just says, Nobody wears those anymore. But why? Surely, somebody somewhere in Starfleet made the decision. Was that an order from Jellico, the same guy who finally got Troi in a proper uniform? Or did Garak use his Obsidian Order tailoring skills to finally get that eyesore out of the galaxy? We may never know.5. Where is Thomas Riker? One of TNGs better updates on a TOS concept occurred in the season six episode Second Chances, in which a transporter accident splits Riker into two distinct people. The second person takes the name Thomas Riker, and goes his own way from William. He goes so far, in fact, as to join the Maquis, the anti-Cardassian resistance fighters, a move that eventually gets him locked in prison.Once again, Lower Decks doesnt forget about Thomas Riker, telling us that he left that prison at some point, but thats where the trail goes cold. We have no idea how or why he left, or where he ended up next.As a person with the knowledge of the first officer of Starfleets flagship and also anti-Federation leanings, Thomas Riker is an incredibly interesting character. He shows up regularly in non-canonical worksincluding the Peter David novel Triangle: Imzadi II, in which he hooks up with Yars Romulan daughter Selabut is absent from mainline canon, and were the lesser for it.6. How the heck does Section 31 work?Okay, okay, okay. Weve written a lot about how Section 31 is a limited concept and that Star Trek should really stop telling Section 31 stories. But since the powers that be cannot help but keep using edgy cool Starfleet, weve got to ask: how does this thing operate anyway? The original storylines in Deep Space Nine established Section 31 as something of a vestigial branch authorized by the Federation charter. They have access to Starfleet records but, as Luther Sloan put it, dont exactly ask for permission. That suggests that theyve been operating on their own for so long that they work independently of Starfleet and the Federation, despite having access to resources within those organizations. But in Discovery, Lower Decks, and the Section 31 movie, Section 31 seems to have more direct interactions with Starfleet, which make all the cloak and dagger stuff used to contact Bashir an unnecessary game played by Sloan.Look, we dont want more Section 31. But if its going to keep coming up, can we at least get some idea of how this thing works? That would help Section 31 stories from feeling like excuses to cram rejected Suicide Squad pitches into the Star Trek universe unless, of course, thats exactly what Section 31 stories are.7. What became of the Dominion? As if to prove the argument above, we know that the Founders were terribly weakened by Section 31s genocidal attack. Deep Space Nine ends with the suggestion that the cure Odo takes to the Great Link will stem most of the damage, but the Changeling plot from season three of Picard undermines that a bit.Still, the Dominion wasnt just the Changelings. What about the Vorta or the JemHadar? Its hard not to believe that there arent just piles of Weyouns stacked up in the Gamma Quadrant, waiting for their next higher being to serve with delicious irony. And the JemHadar were engineered to be eternal warriors. They must be steeling for a fight, and its hard to believe that some wouldnt have returned to the Alpha Quadrant to sate that thirst. The demand from producer Rick Berman and co. to keep the Dominion War relegated to Deep Space Nine means that well probably never get an answer, unless Star Trek: Legacy actually happens.8. What Happened to Sisko? Its difficult to explain its not linear, Benjamin Sisko says of his life as the Emissary in the final episode of Deep Space Nine. Called by the Prophets to do even more work after the conclusion of the Dominion War, Sisko accepts his role as Emissary and more or less disappears.Still, it would be nice if someone would try to explain Siskos life after the show. One of the greatest Captains in Trek history closed out the greatest Trek series by disappearing into light, leaving only promises to his family that he would return again. And then never returning again. We know that Siskos performer Avery Brooks didnt have quite the same desire to revisit his character as others in the franchise and, at age 76, thats unlikely to change now. And Sisko does lead the excellent current Star Trek comics published by IDW.However, it would be nice to get some news about Sisko and his whereabouts, at least something other than the truthers peddling conspiracy theories on, you guessed it, Lower Decks.9. What happened to Janeway and Pariss salamander babies?Lets get this straight. Threshold is a weird, corny episode of Voyager. But it isnt a bad episode of Voyager. It deserves respect, at least enough for the franchise to look back and consider what happened to the babies made by the salamander versions of Janeway and Paris. For those who need a reminder, Threshold follows Tom Paris as he exceeds Warp 10. The feat transforms him into some type of salamander monster, driven by the need to mate. He kidnaps Janeway, subjects her to the same transformation process, then takes her to a planet to mate. The two are rescued and restored, but not before making a litter of salamander babies. So what happened to those guys? Do they turn into humans later in life? Do they ever try to find their parents, attacking Pariss daughter with BElanna or the Prodigy kids in a fit of jealous anger?Well, at least well always have the salamander babies that came with the Tom Paris Threshold Mutant action figure. Well just make up our own stories.10. What did Worf do to the Enterprise-E?It was more than a little surprising when the third season of Picard brings Worf back into the fold not as the Captain of the Enterprise but as a ronin who chops off Ferengi heads. After all, non-canon works had pretty much all agreed that Worf would take command of the Enterprise at some point, making the plot point a likely candidate for in-canon inclusion. Finally, with the main cast all reunited and preparing to board the restored Enterprise-D, someone makes a crack about the fate of the Enterprise-E. After a beat of silence, Worf finally speaks up. That was not my fault, he declares. What wasnt your fault Worf? Look, the -E was an ugly ship and were glad to see it gone, replaced by the restored -D and the one-time Titan changed into the Enterprise-G. But the destruction of the -E would at least make for a good story, if only to lend some strength to Worfs character.11. Why do the Disco Klingons look like that?We do not discuss it with outsiders. Worfs answer to his DS9 crewmates questions about the difference between TOS Klingons and TNG Klingons is way better than the Augment Virus plot from Enterprise. Still, we cant help but wonder about the radically redesigned Klingons introduced in Discovery. The Klingons were easily one of the least loved parts of the divisive Discovery, so much so that the creatures grew hair to look closer to the TNG versions in season two. By season three, the Klingons disappeared from the show, never to be seen again. When Strange New Worlds or Lower Decks used Klingons, they always used pre-established versions, never the ones from Disco. Except, of course, for a brief shot in the Lower Decks finale The New Next Generation, when a multiverse field transforms two TNG-style Klingons into the Disco version. This multiversal moment has led some to believe that Disco took place in an alternate reality, but Lower Decks series creator Mike McMahan has been cagey about confirming that theory or debunking it. Honestly, the best way forward is to just ignore the redesigns and move on. But if the Disco Klingons ever come back, we need at least some acknowledgement that Kahless beat them with an ugly stick held back from the other houses.12. Why did Daniels become Kovich?Viewers were filled with questions every time Doctor Kovich hit the screen in Discovery. Granted, the overwhelming majority of those questions were variations of How the heck did they get David Cronenberg on this show? but some of the others related to his apparent knowledge of other timelines and realities.Instead of answering those questions, the Discovery finale closed with another. Kovich reveals that he has also been known as Daniels, and once served on the Enterprise. Daniels, of course, is the mysterious crewman who worked with Captain Archer during the Temporal Cold War on Enterprise.Outside of the fun factoid that Daniels was originally played by Matt Winston, son of special effects master and contemporary to Cronenberg Stan Winston, the connection makes no sense and raises so many questions. Are other people from Star Trek history supposed to be Kovich/Daniels? Why the name change? Is the 32nd century connected to the adventures he had with Archer? As with Section 31, some answers here would be nice, if only to keep the reference from feeling like an empty play at significance by name dropping an otherwise irrelevant character.

  • Apple humanoid robot could have one huge advantage,as Meta announces its project
    9to5mac.com
A new report suggests that Apple and Meta could end up competing in the humanoid robots field. The social media company is said to be making significant investment in this product category, with a focus on household chores. But if Apple does proceed with its own reported domestic robot plans, the Cupertino company could have a huge advantage Apples robot plansSay the word robot to most people and they immediately think of a sci-fi humanoid robot able to perform domestic chores a kind of robobutler. Apple is already rumored to be working on this type of device. Bloomberg last year described this as a skunk-works project, a name given to something worked on by a small team of people acting largely on their own initiative, and quite distinct from the companys main product development roadmap.I expressed my view at the time that this is a decade or more away, if Apple even goes forward with it. Indeed, a report last week suggested that we may be waiting several years just for a relatively simple table-top robot, despite the revelation of that cute table lamp.Bloomberg reports that Meta has developed a strong interest in AI-powered humanoid robots, seeing this as a key focus.Meta has identified its next big bet: AI-powered humanoid robots. The company is making a significant investment into the category futuristic robots that can act like humans and assist with physical tasks[]Meta plans to work on its own humanoid robot hardware, with an initial focus on household chores [and] has started discussing its plan with robotics companies, including Unitree Robotics and Figure AI Inc []Meta confirmed the creation of the new team to employees Friday.Interestingly, it suggests that the first robot may not have Meta branding; the company is more interested in providing the AI smarts for hardware built by other brands. However, it says that we may see Meta-branded robots further down the line. While I still see truly capable domestic robots as a long-term bet, if theres one thing likely to accelerate the timeline its multiple companies competing in the same area. Perhaps Metas jump into this field might see Apples humanoid robot project promoted from hobby to something more mainstream within the company. So far, autonomous robots have been geared to commercial use. This includes Boston Dynamics dog-like Spot, designed for patrol and inspection duties, and looking like something straight out of a terrifying dystopian SF movie in which packs of these device hunt down humans. But the company does have the humanoid Atlas model in development, pitched at warehouse and manufacturing duties. The transition to domestic work is likely to take significantly longer simply because of the very different price points consumer robots have to hit. Tesla is working on a model it expects to cost $30,000, which is a very niche market even if the real price doesnt end up being inflated in the usual Tesla-esque way. Apple may have one huge advantageHaving a humanoid robot in your home is going to be a pretty scary prospect for many, not least because it could feel almost as intrusive as having a stranger in your home a stranger equipped with multiple cameras.Apples privacy focus and reputation could turn out to be a very big advantage.Photo byAlex KnightonUnsplashAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • South Korea Suspends DeepSeek AI Downloads Over Privacy Violations
    thehackernews.com
Feb 17, 2025Ravie LakshmananArtificial Intelligence / Data ProtectionSouth Korea has formally suspended new downloads of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot DeepSeek in the country until the service makes changes to its mobile apps to comply with data protection regulations.Downloads have been paused as of February 15, 2025, 6:00 p.m. local time, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) said in a statement. The web service remains accessible. The agency said it commenced its own analysis of DeepSeek right after its launch and that it "identified some shortcomings in communication functions and personal information processing policies with third-party service providers."DeepSeek is said to have recently appointed a local representative, per PIPC, with the company also acknowledging it had failed to take into consideration domestic privacy laws when launching the service. To that end, downloads of DeepSeek are being paused until the company implements the necessary improvements that bring the service in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act."This temporary suspension of the DeepSeek app restricts new app downloads from the app market, and we ask existing users to use it cautiously, such as not entering personal information in the DeepSeek input window (prompt) until the final results are announced," the agency noted.Furthermore, PIPC intends to ensure compliance and improve guidance so as to prevent similar lapses from occurring in the future. The development comes shortly after South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) called out the service for "excessively" collecting personal data and using the information to train its AI systems. In recent weeks, DeepSeek's Android and iOS apps have also been found to contain security weaknesses that allow certain data to be sent to its servers in unencrypted format.Beijing has previously said it allows internet companies across the world to operate in the country as long as they follow local laws and regulations, and that it would never ask any company or individual to collect or store data in breach of laws..Found this article interesting?
