• Case study: St Marks Schoolhouse by Dow Jones Architects
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Our project refurbished a small derelict schoolhouse and converted it into our architecture studio, making a comfortable and uplifting space for us to work in. It combines low-carbon strategies with a listed building refurb. The schoolhouse was built in 1867 for the growing population of Battersea when Clapham Junction Station was built. The school closed in the 1960s, was used in an ad hoc way and then lay empty for 40 years. It is Grade II-listed and was on the Heritage at Risk register until we completed our refurbishment. When we started, the building fabric was in very poor condition. The north wall had a severe outward lean and was held up by scaffolding, and all walls had extensive cracking. Windows and doors were either missing or rotten. We used reversible techniques and like-for-like repairs to retain the character of the listed building, alongside a sustainability strategy focused on high levels of insulation (exceeding current Building Regulations), improved airtightness, low-carbon heating and re-use of materials.Walls were insulated internally by building an independent timber frame inside the existing brick walls, sat on a new structural concrete floor slab. We wanted to retain the character of the roof timbers, and so the roof is insulated externally above the sarking boards. Additional courses of bricks at the gables contain the additional roof build-up, which is concealed at the eaves with oversized gutters. Our office is on a busy road, so we have MVHR to avoid relying on opening windows for ventilation; heating is from an air source heat pump and hot water from a phase change thermal battery.Biba Dow, director, Dow Jones ArchitectsAdvertisementProject dataStart on site September 2023Completion Gross internal floor area 2Architect Dow Jones ArchitectsClient Dow Jones ArchitectsStructural engineer MomentumM&E consultant C+C BEApproved building inspector AssentMain contractor Silver Fern ConstructionSpecificationWe were keen to retain the scale and openness of the schoolroom, but also to make intimate areas in which to work. The teachers office has become our library and weve built a small timber building at one end of the schoolroom, which creates an upstairs meeting room and a downstairs space for lunch. We also enclosed the small yard at one end to make a kitchen and WCs.The meeting room has a large window overlooking our workspace, so views across the building are maintained. A cupboard is formed behind the undercut stair for our server and printer, and the MVHR duct makes a small seat at the top of the stairs.Construction was an exercise in circular material reuse. As we were insulating above the roof, we recycled the 1960s roof tiles into hardcore below the new ground slab. The old floor joists were set aside and used to build the meeting room structure. We then re-used the old pine floorboards as cladding for the stair and meeting room. The boards are around 27mm thick and 90mm wide; they are amazing quality, very straight and long. Our joiner took out the nails, planed them and sorted them into lengths, then used them to clad the outside of the meeting room and stair.Biba Dow, director, Dow Jones Architects

  • X doubles its Premium+ plan prices after xAI releases Grok 3
    techcrunch.com
Hours after Elon Musks AI company, xAI released the latest version of its AI model, Grok 3, X has significantly hiked the price for its top Premium+ subscription plan, which gives users access to the latest model, to almost $50 per month. On the support page that lists Xs premium plans, the monthly subscription price for Premium+ in the U.S. has been updated to $50, and the yearly price to $350. This is the second time X is raising the price for the Premium+ plan in the past couple of months. In December, the company hiked the subscription amount to $22 per month from $16 per month. If we go by any of the listed prices, the new plan will cost Premium+ subscribers more than double what they currently pay.xAI is putting some of Grok 3s features behind a separate SuperGrok plan available through the Grok app. So only some features like deep search and reasoning will be available to Premium+ plan users. Its worth noting that the pricing is not consistent on X: When this reporter tried to sign up for the Premium+ plan, X showed that it would cost $39.83 per month ($477.95 annually), though the final check-out page said it would cost $395 for a year.Image Credits: Screenshot by TechCrunchAlso, while Xs support page says a monthly subscription costs $50, the sign-up page lists a $48.40 per month price, and the check-out page is charging $40 a month.

Oh, but it is.Here is the clip that generated a whopping 1.7 million views in just 17 hours on the SMTMP post alone. At first, I couldnt tell if the clip was AI-generated or a fan-created concept video. I reached out to Woodleys manager, Quincy Dash, via email, and he confirmed, Yes, it is 100% real from his film Sultan (2016).Its directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and stars Salman Khan. In the film, Woodley plays himself, and he is one of Khans rivals. The film doesnt have an official rating, but it holds a 7.1-star rating on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).This is Earth, so as expected, the comments section was on fire. • Google Starts Tracking All Your Devices As Chrome Changes
    www.forbes.com
Surprise new tracking goes live.Jaap Arriens/NurPhotoGoogle Chrome users are being tracked. Last years decision to resurrect tracking cookies triggered a privacy storm, as did alleged data collection from private browsing sessions. But Googles planned new upgrade should fix this once and for all. Dont get too excited, though. Theres a nasty new tracking surprise that has just gone live.First to the good news. Tracking cookies will finally be killed by a one time global prompt upgrade, giving Chrome users an Apple-like choice between being tracked and (more likely) not being tracked. All good, albeit the timing is unclear and the industry seems worried that this may unfairly advantage Google, given its own account tracking. As such we await the inevitable regulatory green light and potential delays. But while thats a good privacy move, the surprising update thats just gone live seems to be bad news for those same users benefiting from a one-time global prompt. Were talking digital fingerprinting, which Google prohibited as wrong in 2019 but has now resurrected. As of February 16th, fingerprinting has also been expanded to track all your devices such as smart TVs and gaming consoles, providing a rich new seam of your data for the advertising industry to mine.Privacy campaigners have called Googles new rules on tracking people online a blatant disregard for user privacy, BBC News reported this weekend, citing Mozillas Martin Thomson warning that Google has given itself - and the advertising industry it dominates - permission to use a form of tracking that people cant do much to stop.MORE FOR YOUThe UKs data regulator explains that fingerprinting involves the collection of pieces of information about a devices software or hardware, which, when combined, can uniquely identify a particular device and user, echoing Thomsons warning that even privacy-conscious users will find this difficult to stop.Google says that the reversal reflects a new device landscape, with smart devices enabling a broader range of surfaces on which ads are served, while telling BBC News that privacy-enhancing technologies offer new ways for our partners to succeed on emerging platforms... without compromising on user privacy. There was little furor when Google announced this change in December, as I reported at the time. But with it now live, there has been more of a pushback and it remains unclear how regulators will respond. French data regulator CNIL, for example, has warned that the use of fingerprinting for advertising purposes requires the consent of users who must be able to refuse as simply as accept.Meanwhile, Google says we continue to give users choice whether to receive personalized ads, and will work across the industry to encourage responsible data use." Only time will tell what happens next as all our devices start reporting back. Clearly Google and the regulators cant both be right. For the time being, fingerprinting cant be stopped. We will need to see a mandatory opt-out to change that.Chrome users are left with the irony of a simultaneous good move on tracking cookies and a bad move on fingerprinting. The ad industry needs your data, and that is unlikely to change. I have reached out to Google to ask whether an opt-out may come after all.

This month, Netflix has added Home Improvement, the show that launched Tim Allen's career into the stratosphere. That series was a ratings juggernaut for its time. The same can't be said for this month's other selection, A Different World, which straddled the line between the 1980s and 1990s. But in its own way, A Different World was also a watershed moment for sitcoms in both decades.Either of these shows could keep you binge-watching for weeks, but they're just the beginning of what Netflix offers to comedy fans. Watching while traveling abroad? Use a Netflix VPN to access your country's catalog from anywhere in the world.Home Improvement (1991-1999)In the 1990s, Tim Allen was the king of the family sitcom genre thanks to Home Improvement. He starred as a TV host named Tim, who was married to Jill (Patricia Richardson), and together they had three sons: Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (Taran Noah Smith). Tim was mostly a good father and a family man, but he was occasionally clueless. That's when his largely unseen neighbor, Wilson (Earl Hindman), would offer some words of advice. The creative team cleverly made Tim's in-series show, Tool Time, a regular part of Home Improvement. Tim and his co-host, Al Borland (Richard Karn), shared the screen with Pamela Anderson's Lisa before Anderson went off to star in Baywatch. But even her replacement, Heidi (Debbe Dunning), kept the Tool Time girl alive. This is still a fun show over 30 years later, but times have changed a lot since this series ruled the airwaves.Read more There are a lot fewer romance shows on Netflix than there are romance movies. • Nothing Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro specifications hinted at in a fresh rumor
    www.digitaltrends.com
Nothing, the mobile and lifestyle tech brand founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, is set to launch its next set of mid-rangers early in March. Official details of the devices, including Nothing Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro, have been scanty, but a new leak hints at the tentative specifications, including upgrades coming to the processor, new camera setup, and other improvements to the design.Earlier, Pei had teased the Nothing Phone (3a) series is moving to a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip instead of MediaTek seen on the Phone (2a) and (2a) Plus. This weeks leak, courtesy of a tip received by Indian outlet SmartPrix, corroborates it and states that both phones with be powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 a mid-range chipset launched in August 2024.Recommended VideosBoth phones are suggested to share the same chipset, unlike the Nothing Phone (2a) and (2a) Plus that ran different ones. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe chipset brings a reasonable upgrade to the CPU and GPU performance with newer ARM cores, but the biggest boost is seen in the NPUs performance, allowing better on-device AI processing than last year. Nothing recently shared its plans to deeply integrate AI within its systems for a personalized user experience.NothingNothing showcased a demo interface with contextual information, such as weather, reminders, notifications about content from certain social media creators, as well as quick access to items it suspects you might need, such as the QR code from an upcoming flights boarding pass. It would be interesting to see those bits in action, especially on a mid-ranger with limited processing chops, though Nothing seems confident the stronger NPU will be of advantage. Whether that beats Samsungs Now Brief is what we would be interested in learning.Other than the AI traits, the Nothing Phone (3a) is suggested to get three rear cameras instead of two. Both phones are speculated to come with similar 50MP primary and 8MP ultrawide cameras on the back. The two will likely differ in terms of the third unit, with the Phone (3a) sporting a 2X telephoto lens, while the Pro getting a 3X telephoto with a longer zoom.A post from the companys official handle on X could suggest the possible camera orientations of the two phones. Nothing (@nothing) February 17, 2025Meanwhile, the duo is expected to be the same on other fronts, such as the 5,000mAh battery, a 6.72-inch Full HD+ 120Hz AMOLED, and IP64 rating for slightly better dust resistance than last years models. We might even see slight changes to the glyph lights on the back and even witness Nothing adopt a camera shutter button similar to the iPhone. The two phones should also run the newest NothingOS 3.0 with Android 15.Nothing has confirmed a launch date for March 4, which is when we should have more clarity about the devices and their pricing.Editors Recommendations

  • Xi Jinping gave China's big tech companies a personal stamp of approval
    www.businessinsider.com
Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with the country's top tech leaders, signaling support for the private sector.China has cracked down on Big Tech in recent years as it prioritized national security over private sector profit-making priorities.Chinese tech shares rallied after Xi acknowledged the importance and contributions of the private sector.Chinese leader Xi Jinping has signaled that he's ready for business again in a high-profile meeting featuring the country's top tech bosses. On Monday, Xi presided over a meeting with China's private sector leaders including a beaming Jack Ma clad in a black Mao suit.At the meeting, Xi urged the executives to "show their talent" and messaged support for private businesses. His audience included gaming giant Tencent CEO Pony Ma, electric vehicle maker BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu, and Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei."It is necessary to resolutely remove all kinds of obstacles to the equal use of production factors and fair participation in market competition, Xi said, according to Xinhua state news agency.Beijing should continue to promote the fair opening of the competitive field of infrastructure to all kinds of business entities, and continue to make great efforts to solve the problem of difficult and expensive financing for private enterprises, Xi told the business leaders. On Tuesday, Chinese tech shares rallied on the positive signal that Beijing recognizes the importance of the private sector's contribution to its challenged economy.Xi's encouraging stance toward the private sector on Monday is a stark contrast to Beijing's scrutiny of the broader private sector over the last few years. The government has cracked down on private companies across various sectors, including those in online gaming and tutoring.Hong Kong's Hang Seng Tech Index closed 2.5% higher near a three-year high on Tuesday, bringing gains this year to 26%. The broader Hang Seng Index closed 1.6% higher. To be sure, Chinese tech shares have already been posting strong gains in the last few weeks following the meteoric rise of startup DeepSeek's latest flagship AI model."For the past few years, the Chinese authorities had prioritized national security over private sector profit-making priorities," Tai Wei Lim, a professor of business at Japan's Soka University, told Business Insider.Meanwhile, e-commerce giant Alibaba closed 3.2% higher in Hong Kong on Jack Ma's seeming return to favor. In late 2020, he angered Beijing with public criticism of China's financial regulators. An outspoken and high-profile Alibaba cofounder, he largely disappeared from public view after Beijing cracked down on his tech empire. It also cost Ant Group, which he founded, its initial public offering.Jack Ma's appearance at Xi's meeting with business is particularly striking because it signals that "tech leaders seeking profit-making commercial research and products are welcomed" once again, said Lim, who specializes in the political economy of East Asia.Xi's appearance 'is all-important'Xi's personal endorsement of China's tech titans on Monday further boosts sentiment amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry and a trade war with the US in President Donald Trump's second term.Against this backdrop, the rise of DeepSeek which triggered an AI-related sell-off on Wall Street last month highlights the importance of the private sector in China's economic ecosystem, Gary Ng, a senior economist at Natixis, told BI.DeepSeek's stunning breakthrough is a trigger showing "China cannot compete with the US without equal treatment and regulatory flexibility given to private firms," Ng said.Despite Xi's personal stamp of approval, analysts say Beijing still needs to do more to support a broad economic recovery."The move can boost investors' sentiment as more capital bet on the growth in China's AI ability, but the impact on economic growth will depend on whether there is a real policy change," said Ng, referring to a friendly regulatory environment that provides a level playing field for all companies. But Xi's personal appearance with private sector business leaders is a big deal on its own and a sign of state support in China's high-context political culture, said Lim."Given Xi is the most powerful leader since Mao and he is the designated 'Core Leader,' his personal appearance at the meeting with the tech business leaders China's version of the 'tech bros' is all-important," said Lim.

  • Almost a decade after Tesla first launched preorders for its cars in India, it's staffing up in the country
    www.businessinsider.com
Tesla is hiring for roles based in Mumbai, India. The recruitment efforts come just days after Elon Musk met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Tesla has long sought to break into India, the world's third-largest auto market.Tesla is amping up its recruitment efforts in India just days after the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi, met with Elon Musk.Tesla listed 13 roles based in Mumbai on its careers page. The positions were also advertised on the company's LinkedIn page on Monday. The roles range across three categories vehicle service, sales and customer support, and operations and business support. All the listings show that the jobs, which are a mix of full time and part time roles, are based out of suburban Mumbai. The listings also hinted at the opening of a Tesla store and a delivery center in India. For instance, the "Store Manager" listing says the new hire will be "responsible for overseeing and driving sales and sales operations."Tesla is also hiring people for delivery operations work. Staff under this designation are expected to "oversee and coordinate administrative responsibilities at the delivery center."Musk met with Modi in Washington on Thursday. The Indian premier also met with President Donald Trump during his two-day visit to the US.It is unclear if Modi and Musk discussed Tesla's entry into the Indian market during their meeting. Modi wrote in an X post on Thursday that he had a "very good meeting" with the Tesla CEO."We discussed various issues, including those he is passionate about such as space, mobility, technology and innovation," Modi added.Trump told reporters on Thursday that while he wasn't sure why Musk had met Modi, he assumed it was because Musk "wants to do business in India."Representatives for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.Tesla has been planning to enter the Indian market for close to a decade. In April 2016, the company started accepting pre-orders for its vehicles. Then, in January 2021, Tesla registered a company in India, just weeks after the country's transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, said Tesla would launch its operations there in early 2021. India is the world's third-largest auto market. But those plans were put on hold. Musk said in July 2021 it was difficult for Tesla to break into the Indian market because the country's "import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country.""Still working through a lot of challenges with the government," Musk wrote in an X post in January 2022 when asked if Tesla was still planning to launch in India. In March, India lowered its import taxes on EVs made by companies that commit to invest at least $500 million and start making cars in the country within three years.Musk was scheduled to visit India in April and announce Tesla's entry into the country. However, the trip was postponed at the last minute."Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk wrote in an X post in April.
