• Advanced Data Protection how it makes your iCloud data more secure [Video]
    9to5mac.com
By default, iCloud data is secure while in transit. This data is stored in an encrypted format, while the encryption keys are housed in Apple data centers. 15 particularly sensitive data types, like passwords, Health data, and Journal data, use end-to-end encryption as standard. This sensitive data is encrypted with keys derived from your devices and device passcode, which are only accessible by the end user, and thus this data remains secure even in the case of a data breach in the cloud.Advanced Data Protection, which is opt-in, provides end-to-end encryption for 10 additional iCloud data categories like Photos, Notes, and Reminders, meaning that Apple no longer possesses the keys to decrypt these categories as well. Its been couple of years since Advanced Data Protection rolled out. Are you using it? If not, should you consider using it? In this full tutorial and video walkthrough, I discuss what Advanced Data Protection is, how to enable it, and best practices for protecting your precious data. Be sure to subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more in-depth video walkthroughs.Table of contentsVideo: iOS Advanced Data Protection for iCloud explainedSubscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more videosWhat is Advanced Data Protection?Standard Data Protection includes end-to-end encryption for 15 data types, including Passwords and Keychain data, Health data, Home data, etc. Advanced Data Protection offers this same type of protection for an additional 10 data types stored in iCloud, bringing the total to 25 end-to-end encrypted iCloud data categories. Heres a look at what both Standard and Advance Data Protection include:Standard Data Protection includesAdvanced Data Protection addsPasswords and KeychainiCloud Backups (Device and Messages)Health dataiCloud DriveJournal dataPhotosHome dataNotesMessages in iCloudRemindersPayment informationSafari BookmarksApple Card transactionsSiri ShortcutsMapsVoice MemoQuickType Keyboard learned vocabularyWallet PassesSafariFreeformScreen TimeSiri informationWi-Fi passwordsW1 and H1 Bluetooth keysMemojiOf course, there exist categories that cannot be protected using end-to-end encryption due to the nature of the data. For example, iCloud Mail must communicate and interoperate with the global email system as a whole, and Contacts and Calendars are built on standards that do not support end-to-end encryption. One of the most notable new changes that Advanced Data Protection brings to the table is the end-to-end encryption of iCloud Backups. This is notable because, prior to Advanced Data Protection, Apple could access your data, in the case of a court ordered subpoena, via the iCloud backups stored on its servers. This was particularly useful for law enforcement investigations, because although iMessage on the iPhone has long been protected end-to-end via Standard Data Protection, messages data stored in iCloud Backups served as a workaround or loophole. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, even Messages data stored in iCloud Backups and via Messages Backups are now inaccessible by Apple, because the iCloud Backup itself is now end-to-end encrypted. You are responsible for data recoveryWith Advanced Data Protection enabled, Apple no longer has access to decryption keys for your Photos, Notes, Reminders, iCloud Backups, etc. Hence, If you lose access to your account, only you can recover this data by using your device passcode or password, a recovery contact, or a recovery key. Along with setting up one or more trusted recovery contacts, its important that you print your 28-character recovery key on something like a physical hardware wallet that can be engraved with your recovery key and cant be easily damaged or lost. Before enabling Advanced Data Protection, youll be prompted to remove any devices from your iCloud account running older versions of software (anything below iOS 16.2 and macOS 13.1). While Advanced Data Protection is enabled for your iCloud account, you wont be able to sign in to your account using your Apple ID for devices running older software versions. Youll need to update the software on those devices first, or disable Advanced Data Protection, before theyre able to be used with your iCloud account.Once Advanced Data Protection is enabled, it is enabled for all devices linked to your iCloud account.Advanced Data Protection prerequisitesBefore enabling Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, ensure all of the following are true:Your Apple ID has two-factor authentication enabled.A passcode/password is enabled for your device.Youre running the latest version of software on all of your devices:iPhone with iOS 16.2 or lateriPad with iPadOS 16.2 or laterMac with macOS 13.1 or laterApple Watch with watchOS 9.2 or laterApple TV with tvOS 16.2 or laterHomePod with software version 16.2 or laterWindows computer with iCloud for Windows 14.1 or laterYou have at least one account recovery key and/or recovery contact set. The Advanced Data Protection setup will prompt you to do this if you have not.You cannot enable Advanced Data Protection on new device until a time threshold elapses. Youll need to setup Advanced Data Protection on an older device instead.Older devices that cant be updated to iOS 16.2 or later must be removed from iCloud before enabling Advanced Data ProtectionSetting up Account RecoveryYour recovery contact will never be able to access your data, but will be able to generate a code from their Apple device to help you regain access to your data.A recovery contact should be a friend or family member over the age of 13 that you trust. Your recovery contact must have an Apple Device. If you forget your password or passcode, you can contact your recovery contact in person or by phone to help.Step 1: Go to Settings <your name> Sign-In & Security Recovery Contacts.Step 2: Tap Add Recovery Contact and youll be asked to verify with Face ID or device passcode.Step 3: iOS will suggest contacts from your family sharing list if applicable, but you can choose someone else from your contacts as well. Select a contact and then tap the Next button in the upper right-hand corner.Step 4: Youll next be prompted to let your contact know that youve added them as a recovery contact. You can send the canned message that Apple provides by tapping the Send button at the bottom of the screen, or customize the message by tapping Edit Message before sending.Step 5: After the recipient receives the message, theyll need to tap the Account Recovery Contact link and tap the Accept button to confirm. Whether or not the user accepts or declines, the requester will be notified.Add Recovery KeyStep 1: Go to Settings <your name> Password & Security Recovery Key.Step 2: Tap Recovery Key Turn On Recovery Key Use Recovery Key.Step 3: Enter your iPhones passcode to turn on the recovery key.Step 4: Your 28-alphanumeric recovery key will now be displayed. Print a copy or write down your recovery key. I suggest employing a cold storage solution for more secure and permanent safekeeping.Step 5: Tap Continue, and youll be prompted to enter the 28-digit recovery key to prove that you wrote it down correctly. Tap Next once the key is entered.Step 6: If the recovery key was entered correctly, youll be taken back to the Sign-In & Security page with the Recovery key parameter set to On. If you choose to ever create a new recovery key because you lost it or someone else knows it, the new key will replace the old key.How to enable Advanced Data ProtectionStep 1: On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings <your name> iCloud.Step 2: Scroll down and tap the Advanced Data Protection panel, then tap Turn on Advanced Data Protection.Step 3: Youll see a splash screen indicating that you will be responsible for data recovery. Tap the Review Recovery Methods button to review the recovery options youve established, otherwise tap Set Up Account Recovery if youve yet to establish recovery options and refer to the Setting up Account Recovery section above.Step 4: If you have a recovery contact established, and youre satisfied with it, tap the Contacts Up to Date button to proceed. Otherwise, you can tap Update Recovery Contacts.Step 5: Next, assuming you have one set up as instructed above, youll be asked to verify your 28-character recovery key to continue. Enter your recovery key and tap the Next button in the upper right-hand corner.Step 6: Enter your devices passcode to enable Advanced Data Protection. Tap the Done button once you get the Advanced Data Protection is On confirmation page. How to disable Advanced Data ProtectionStep 1: On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings <your name> iCloud.Step 2: Scroll down and tap the Advanced Data Protection panel, then tap Turn Off Advanced Data Protection.Step 3: Tap Turn Off and then enter your iPhones passcode to verify.Your device will securely upload the needed encryption keys to Apples servers and Advanced Data Protection will be disabled. Your Account Recovery options will be maintained, unless modified. 9to5Macs TakeAdvanced Data Protection is simply a way to enable end-to-end encryption across more iCloud data types, bringing the total number of data types to 25. If youre looking for a way to increase the security of the data stored in your iCloud account this is a great free way to do it. Just remember that you take on additional responsibility for your data, since Apple no longer houses the decryption keys when Advanced Data Protection enabled. For many people, thats a small price to pay for the added security of end-to-end encryption. Are you currently using advanced data protection? Why or why not? • Heres why the new iPhone SE is more important than you might think
    9to5mac.com
Apple is expected to launch a successor to the iPhone SE this week, and a new survey reveals just how important it could be to the company.Price is a huge deal to the majority of American smartphone buyers, survey showsOn the eve of a potential new iPhone SE launch, a new survey conducted by Optimum has revealed why Apples budget option is so important.Over 1,500 American consumers were polled on the factors that mattered most when shopping for a new phone.More than half of respondents identified price as the most important aspect of their decision. This means the majority identify price as more important than camera features, AI, battery life, and other seemingly popular sales drivers. Its a telling data point. Not only does the survey indicate why the new iPhone SE is such a big deal for Apple. It also perhaps tells us why Apple doesnt feel the need to update its budget model very often. Why Apple can leave the iPhone SE alone for yearsThe flagship iPhone lineup gets refreshed every year. But not the iPhone SE.While major new iPhones launch each fall without exception, Apples budget model only gets updated every two to three years. The last iPhone SE came out in early 2022, making this an especially lengthy gap.But if the typical iPhone SE buyer values price above all else, then regular updates to include a lot of new features arent really necessary.Instead, Apple can keep the iPhone SEs price low while bringing in greater profits over time as components become more affordable. For shoppers like me, who always prefer the latest and greatest iPhone, the survey is an important reminder of why the iPhone SE is so key to Apples lineup. How important is price to you when buying a new phone? Whats more important to you? Let us know in the comments.Best iPhone accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • An Influencer Says She Had Elon Musks Baby and the Drama Is Pretty Spectacular, Even by His Standards
    futurism.com
Yeet Child of MineA conservative influencer is claiming she secretly gave birth to Elon Musk's thirteenth known child and somehow, that's not even the most dramatic aspect of this buck wild story."Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world," right-wing pundit Ashley St. Clair said in a statement posted to X. "Elon Musk is the father."In her statement, the 26-year-old formerly employed by the Babylon Bee,a right-wing satire site insisted that until now, she hadn't disclosed her child's birth "to protect our child's safety and privacy" and that she was soon to be outed by an undisclosed "tabloid media" source. After that big reveal, St. Clairelaborated on the situation in an interview with theNew York Post."I was told to keep it secret," she said. "I was being asked to keep it a secret forever."As St. Clair detailed in that interview, Musk "slid into [her] DMs" following his purchase of Twitter in 2022. By the next year, the pair had begun a relationship after the woman, then just 24 years old, traveled to San Francisco with other Bee staffers to interview the billionaire. Before long, the conservative influencer fell pregnant though to this day, Musk has yet to publicly acknowledge paternity. As the NY Post explained in its story, the paper was provided with texts between the young writer and Jared Birchall, the CEO of Neuralink who also serves as Musk's wealth manager. In those messages, which weren't published but were briefly described by the paper, St. Clair appears to comply with the multi-hyphenate business owner's request to be left off the child's birth certificate, allegedly for privacy purposes. As melodramatic as this debacle already was, it got even wilder when Milo Yiannopoulos, another far-right figure, waded into the fray."Ashley St Clair plotted for HALF A DECADE to ensnare Elon Musk," the allegedly "ex-gay" pundit said in an X post over the weekend. That post also featured a grainy photo of a screen showing a 2020 exchange between St. Clair and another user in which she joked that she "need[ed] to get Elon Musk's attention for a marriage proposal."Musk himself replied to Yiannopoulos with a single word "Woah" in what amounts to his only response to St. Clair's claim that she gave birth to his thirteenth child. One thing's for sure: the co-parenting situation so far sounds like a drama-laden disaster."Elon, we have been trying to communicate for the past several days and you have not responded,"St. Clair wrote in a since-deleted post, seemingly in reference to Yiannopoulos. "When are you going to reply to us instead of publicly responding to smears from an individual who just posted photos of me in underwear at 15 years old?"Supposing that St. Clair's claims hold up, it's unknown whether the billionaire and his avowed paramour conceived her alleged child the old-fashioned way or did so via in vitro fertilization (IVF), as many of Musk's acknowledged children were and that's without getting into other recent gossip about the billionaire's sex life. While Musk continues to move fast and break things within the federal government, this latest baby mama drama is another telling example of why these kinds of men are profoundly ill-equipped to be running our country. Unfortunately, we seem to be stuck with him and his boss until folks with political power decide to stop pulling the wool over their eyes.More on the Musk family: Elon Musks Dad Goes On Transphobic Tirade Against His GrandkidsShare This Article

  • Zuckerberg's New Metaverse Ad Is So Bad That the People Who Created It Must Be Secretly Trying to Humiliate Him
    futurism.com
Meta has released a new "ad" for its flagship virtual reality app,Horizon Worlds and it's so much worse than anyone could have predicted. The 44-second clip Meta shared on Instagram over the weekend shows misshapen avatar characters sitting in a circle of chairs while discussing their breakups (because of Valentine's Day, apparently?)And given the more than $60 billion the company's Reality Labs has wasted on the project since 2020, the result is astonishingly bad. It looks more like a middle schooler's 3D animation project, with bizarrely proportioned low-poly avatars awkwardly mimicking the movements of real-life users. Their forearms in particular seem to be completely detached, awkwardly dangling from the avatars' elbows due to the limitations of Meta's Quest controllers. The ad appears to have generated enough ridicule online that the company has deleted it from Instagram. (Futurism has reached out to Meta for clarification.)It's difficult not to see the latest gaff as yet another black eye in the company's efforts to justify the existence of its pitiful metaverse. Despite billions of dollars spent, its best efforts still look completely embarrassing.Even the voice acting and script are unintentionally mortifying."My ex broke up with me via text using emojis," one avatar says in the video while waving his arms around. "I got a broken heart, a crying face, and a thumbs up."Besides the atrocious graphics, the whole vibe is just off."Meta has a fundamental misunderstanding of how people want to be represented in virtual worlds," one user on X-formerly-Twitter wrote. "No one wants to be a boring human in the metaverse when the possibilities are infinite. Who is advising these people?"It's a terrible showing for the trillion-dollar tech company. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg promised a "pivotal year for the metaverse." But given its latest ad, the company has made astonishingly little progress over the last three years.Remember that cringe "selfie" Zuckerberg showed off in 2022 of himself blankly staring into the camera with some low-effort 3D renditions of the Eiffel Tower and the Sagrada Familia behind him?Despite $70 billion in losses over the past three years, Meta's metaverse remains a hellscape filled with screeching underage children, distinctly void of the vibrant and life-filled virtual worlds the company initially showed off during the unveiling of Horizon Worlds.Exactly what's going on behind the scenes is a fascinating question. Did Meta allow the project to atrophy while it doubled down on its AI investments instead? In short, how did things get this bad? Other videos shared by Meta's Horizon showing in-game footage paint an even more damning picture of the current state of the tech, with rudimentary avatars juddering through uninspired and largely empty virtual worlds.During the company's Q4 earnings call in January, Zuckerberg remained adamant that his massive bet on the metaverse would eventually pay off."The number of people using Quest and Horizon has been steadily growing, and this is a year when a number of the long-term investments that we've been working on that will make the metaverse more visually stunning and inspiring will really start to land," he told investors. But when the metaverse will live up to those lofty promises remains unclear at best. In its current state, it's a startlingly terrible experience that leaves a lot to be desired.More on the metaverse: The Metaverse Is Completely Falling ApartShare This Article

  • New OpenSSH Flaws Enable Man-in-the-Middle and DoS Attacks Patch Now
    thehackernews.com
Feb 18, 2025Ravie LakshmananVulnerability / Network SecurityTwo security vulnerabilities have been discovered in the OpenSSH secure networking utility suite that, if successfully exploited, could result in an active machine-in-the-middle (MitM) and a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, respectively, under certain conditions. The vulnerabilities, detailed by the Qualys Threat Research Unit (TRU), are listed below -CVE-2025-26465 - The OpenSSH client contains a logic error between versions 6.8p1 to 9.9p1 (inclusive) that makes it vulnerable to an active MitM attack if the VerifyHostKeyDNS option is enabled, allowing a malicious interloper to impersonate a legitimate server when a client attempts to connect to it (Introduced in December 2014)CVE-2025-26466 - The OpenSSH client and server are vulnerable to a pre-authentication DoS attack between versions 9.5p1 to 9.9p1 (inclusive) that causes memory and CPU consumption (Introduced in August 2023)"If an attacker can perform a man-in-the-middle attack via CVE-2025-26465, the client may accept the attacker's key instead of the legitimate server's key," Saeed Abbasi, manager of product at Qualys TRU, said."This would break the integrity of the SSH connection, enabling potential interception or tampering with the session before the user even realizes it."In other words, a successful exploitation could permit malicious actors to compromise and hijack SSH sessions, and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data. It's worth noting that the VerifyHostKeyDNS option is disabled by default.Repeated exploitation of CVE-2025-26466, on the other hand, can result in availability issues, preventing administrators from managing servers and locking legitimate users out, effectively crippling routine operations. Both the vulnerabilities have been addressed in version OpenSSH 9.9p2 released today by OpenSSH maintainers. The disclosure comes over seven months after Qualys shed light on another OpenSSH flaw dubbed regreSSHion (CVE-2024-6387) that could have resulted in unauthenticated remote code execution with root privileges in glibc-based Linux systems.Found this article interesting? • Work starts on EBBAs overhaul of listed house designed by Team 4 founder
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The East London-based practices project will sensitively and sustainably restore the original 34 Belsize Lane building in Belsize Park. It will also add a lightweight first-floor addition above its bedroom wing. The house was designed and built between 1975 and 1976as a home and studio for herself and her family by Wolton, who died four years ago, aged 87.In 2023 it became her first building to be included on the National Heritage List for England, after being given statutory protection by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of Historic England.AdvertisementWolton (ne Cheesman) formed the architectural firm Team 4 in 1963 with Richard Rogers, whom she had met while studying at Epsom, along with Su Rogers, Norman Foster and her younger sister, Wendy Cheesman (who later married Foster). She left the practice a few months later. The 34 Belsize Lane home adopted some of the key concepts of design developed during her career, including notions regarding the principles of light, the arrangement of spaces and their connection to the landscape. It is built around three courtyard gardens and features a series of rooflights, bespoke sliding timber shutters and conservatory-like antechambers areas Wolton called pause spaces, separating the living and working parts of the house. As a Modernist, she was interested in the quality of architecture that came through simple construction and an expression of how things came together. Extensions and additions were seen as lightweight elements that contrasted with the heavier elements of primary walls. At the time of its listing, Historic England regional director Tom Foxall described the house as an accomplished piece of her work, adding: Wolton's buildings are little known, but she made an important contribution to post-war Modernism in England.AdvertisementThe building is a meticulously conceived studio house which creatively integrates into its setting and meets the high threshold for listing. The house has been empty since her death and will become a family home after the restoration. The first-floor extension is set to be made of a lightweight timber structure, which a statement from EBBA said reflects the language of construction found in the work of Georgie Woltons oeuvre.Other works include reconstruction of some external walls to increase insulation and address structural issues. In August last year Camden Council also approved measures to redevelop the propertys garden, install solar panels, an air source heat pump and rainwater harvesting measures.EBBA founder Benni Allan said: With this project, we intend to demonstrate new strategies for the restoration of Modernist houses, creating a sustainable model to restore and retain these architectural icons whilst pioneering a new future for them.Critic and author Jonathan Meades has described Wolton as the outstanding woman architect of the generation before Zaha [Hadid].Wolton had a longstanding interest in buildings designed to function as both domestic and work spaces. Her best-known work is Phase I (1969) and II (1971-2) of Cliff Road Studios. Her now-demolished Fieldhouse in East Horsley, Surrey, was built in 1968 with a Cor-ten steel frame. It was among the first domestic uses of Cor-ten steel in the UK and was one of several of houses designed by British architects in the 1960s and 70s that were heavily influenced by Mies van der Rohes Farnsworth House in Illinois. It's no surprise that it had the best performance detecting a slow-smoldering fire, averaging 24.1 seconds after initial exposure to smoke, and similarly, the second-best performance detecting a fast-flaming fire, averaging 17.9 seconds. It's powered by a 9-volt battery, plate-mounted and features both "hush" and "test" buttons for weekly testing. If you're looking for efficiency and reliability at an affordable price, the Kidde PI9010 is where your search should start. However, it doesn't have the smart home compatibility of some brands like Google Nest, which may be disappointing to some high-tech homeowners. $150 at Best Buy If you are looking for a high-tech device that you can control and communicate with, the Nest Protect is perfect for the task. It features a single button that has "hush," "test" and "reset" functionality, and you can hard-wire it to a 120-volt circuit or run it on a battery. It features two alert modes: Heads-up, characterized by a yellow glow in the background when smoke levels are rising, and Emergency, when the smoke concentration in an area has reached a critical level, displaying a red light. The device will speak to you in English, letting you know which area of your home needs immediate attention. This is particularly useful if you have a large home and need to know exactly where the emergency is located. The Nest App allows you to interconnect other Nest Protect smoke alarms in your home, displaying them all in a single dashboard. From there, you can easily hush and/or test all or any of your smoke detector devices at the press of a button. Sensors, alarms, voice, battery level and Wi-Fi connectivity checks are all part of the assessment. The original Nest Protect ranked fourth in our quickness of response test, but its ample functionality, versatility and smart features make it a very compelling option for those looking to upgrade their smart home security game.

See at Stan Sport Quick tips for streaming UEFA Champions League matches using a VPNWith four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming Champions League games may vary.If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option. If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try to fix quickly. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.
