  • The iPhone 16E is here. Here are 5 ways its different from the iPhone SE
    www.fastcompany.com
Apple has introduced its first new product of 2025: the iPhone 16E. The new iPhone replaces the iPhone SE from Apples lineupthe companys entry-level, budget iPhone. But the iPhone 16E is more than just a minor spec update to the existing third-generation iPhone SE, which debuted nearly three years ago.As its name suggests, Apples new entry-level device has more in common with its flagship iPhone 16 series, introduced last year, than the now-discontinued iPhone SE of old. Here are five major changes Apple has made and who, exactly, the new iPhone 16E is for.[Photo: Apple]A new design with a 6.1-inch displayThe most noticeable thing about the iPhone 16E is that in design, it more closely resembles modern-day iPhones, such as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, the latter from which it derives its name. The iPhone SE that the iPhone 16E replaced retained the same design as the iPhone 8 back in 2017. That design included a thick forehead and chin squeezing the tiny, 4.7-inch display from the top and bottom. With the elimination of the top and bottom bumpers around the display, Apple has been able to grow the size of the 16Es screen by 1.4 inches. Yet, because Apple has done this by eliminating those ugly bumpers, Apple managed to only grow the physical size of the entire device by a few millimeters on all sides. But most importantly about the iPhone 16Es new design is that Apples entry-level iPhone now more closely resembles all other modern-day, entry-level phonesincluding Android ones. Consumers are used to smartphones having near edge-to-edge displays and the fact that the iPhone SE never had this turned many off the device.Face ID replaces Touch IDAnother big change with the iPhone 16E is that it adopts Face ID, Apples biometric authentication system. This means that with the introduction of the iPhone 16E, Apple no longer sells a phone with the companys groundbreaking Touch ID biometric authentication system it first introduced in 2013.Not only does the elimination of Touch ID mean the iPhones once-iconic physical home button is now a thing of the past, but it also means that the iPhone 16E is more secure than the iPhone SE ever was. Thats because Face ID has a false-positive rate of one in a million, whereas Touch ID has a false-positive rate of just one in 50,000. Thats a 20x improvement in biometric security.Bye-bye Lightning port, hello USB-CBut for many people with multiple modern devices, the most welcome change to the iPhone 16E is that Apple has finally replaced the archaic Lightning port on its entry-level iPhone. Instead of Lightning, the iPhone 16E now features a universal USB-C port, which means that you no longer need to rely on proprietary cables to charge your iPhone. The iPhone 16E, like other modern iPhones and Android phones, can now be charged with any USB-C cable, even if that cable is the one that came with your MacBook Pro or your Samsung Galaxy device.A18 chip and an Apple-built 5G modemInternally, Apple has given the iPhone 16E a massive performance boost over the iPhone SE it replaces. The new iPhone 16E now features the same A18 chip that is found in the iPhone 16 (a huge improvement over the A15 in the previous iPhone SE). Additionally, the iPhone 16E has also received a RAM boost to 8GB (from the 4GB found in the SE).Theres a reason for the generous chip and RAM upgrades, which Ill get to next. But first, its also worth mentioning that the iPhone 16E has a first for any iPhone: Its the first Apple device to use Apples new custom 5G modem.Apple didnt give many details about its new custom cellular modem, dubbed the Apple C1, beyond saying that the modem is the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone.[Photo: Apple]Apple Intelligence built-inBut getting back to that A18 chips boost and doubling of the RAM to 8GB. Theres a reason Apple has done that. It allows the new iPhone 16E to run Apple Intelligence, Apples new AI platform introduced with iOS 18.1.Apple sees Apple Intelligence as a potential major driver of iPhone sales in the short and long term. Given that Apple usually only updates its entry-level iPhone once every three or so years, the company wants to make sure that the iPhone 16E will be able to run Apple Intelligence for the foreseeable futuremaking it appealing to cost-conscious and AI-curious consumers, no matter if they buy the device this year or next.Who is the iPhone 16E for?Apple is positioning the iPhone 16E as the companys new low-cost iPhone. However, in some regards, the iPhone 16E is a better choice than the iPhone 15, which Apple continues to sell.To be sure, the iPhone 15 still offers some better features, including a dual-lens rear camera setup (versus the single-lens camera found on the iPhone 16E). But the iPhone 15 lacks the necessary chipset and RAM to run Apple Intelligence.Thats why if you are looking for the lowest-cost iPhone that is built for todays AI world, the iPhone 16E is a better choice than the iPhone 15. However, if you are looking for the lowest-cost iPhone with a more modern camera system, the iPhone 15, with its dual-lens setup, is better than the iPhone 16E. The iPhone 15 also sports the Dynamic Island, which the iPhone 16E lacks (yes, the iPhone 16E has the notch). Another minus for the iPhone 16E is its lack of MagSafe, the iPhone feature that lets you magnetically attach devices like power banks to your iPhone to charge the device. But while the iPhone 16E offers several benefits over the iPhone SE it replaces, there is one drawback the device has gaineda price rise. The previous iPhone SE started at just $429. The new iPhone 16E starts at $599a staggering $170 more than the SE. This high price means its debatable as to whether Apple actually offers a budget iPhone any longer.Pre-orders for the iPhone 16E begin this Friday, February 21. The device will go on sale to the public a week later on Friday, February 28.

  • Apple unveils iPhone 16e, eliminating the budget iPhone SE from the lineup
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApple has introduced its latest iPhone, and its a huge shakeup to the iPhone lineup. Its not an update to the $429 iPhone SE, which was last updated three years ago. Instead, its a new iPhone 16 model, the iPhone 16e, which comes in one size and shaves $200/200 off the starting price. Its a huge leap up in capabilities over the old third-generation iPhone SE, but also a big step up in price. Now, the iPhone SE has been eliminated from the iPhone lineup, as have a number of older models. Apple no longer sells a budget phone, just a less-expensive version of the current model.Pre-orders for the new model begin on February 21, with availability starting on February 28. It is available in white or black, with prices starting at $599/599 for the 128GB model. An iPhone 16 by any other nameThe new iPhone 16e naming is appropriate. This new phone has more in common with Apples latest iPhone 16 than with prior models. At a glance, you get:A 6.1-inch OLED displayFace IDA18 processorApple Intelligence support48MP rear camera with 2x telephotoSatellite connectivityAction ButtonSo what are you missing from the regular iPhone 16? Well, for $200 more, the iPhone 16 gives you the Camera Control button, an ultrawide rear camera with macro photography, Dynamic Island, MagSafe charging, a brighter display, ultra-wideband, and the ability to take spatial photos and videos. And of course, colors.Apple has made some interesting tradeoffs to bring the price down. Taking away the second rear camera was a given, but that also removes the ability to take spatial photos and videos and the useful macro photography mode. As expected, Face ID is incorporated into the screen using the old notch style rather than the newer Dynamic Island, so you miss out on persistent live activities. With Camera Control gone, you might think youre missing out on the Visual Intelligence feature of iPhone 16, but thats not the case: Apple has made it accessible via the Action button.AppleIts surprising to see Apple drop MagSafe from the iPhone 16e, however. The magnetic attachment feature has been a staple of the iPhone for the last four years. You still get Qi wireless charging up to 7.5 watts, but faster charging (and attachment to magnetic accessories) is off the table. The display is the same size as that on the iPhone 16 (6.1 inches) but doesnt get as bright. The maximum brightness for iPhone 16e is 800 nits or 1,000 for HDR content. That compares to 1,000/1,600 nits for the iPhone 16, which can boost to 2,000 nits in bright outdoor light. The iPhone 16e essentially has the iPhone 14 display. Its worth noting that the A18 in the iPhone 16e is not quite as powerful as the A18 in the regular iPhone 16. It has only 4 GPU cores active, while the iPhone 16s A18 has 5 GPU cores. Apple may reduce performance in other ways as well, such as limiting clock speed, but we wont know until we run our own performance tests.AppleIntroducing the Apple C1 modemOne big exclusive feature of the iPhone 16e is the debut of Apples latest silicon: the Apple C1 modem. It supports sub-6GHz 5G and 4G LTE with 44 MIMO, and Apple calls it the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone. As previously expected, it does not support mmWave 5G connectivity but neither did the previous SE.Together with its other Apple silicon and a new internal design, Apple promises a big boost in battery life. The company claims up to 26 hours of video playback, compared to 22 hours for the regular iPhone 16 and 27 hours for the iPhone 16 Pro.When it comes to other connectivity, the iPhone 16e is a bit of a step back from the standard iPhone 16. It deosnt have ultra-wideband radio, so while it will certainly work with your AirTags, the precision finding capability wont. Its also missing Thread networking and has Wi-Fi 6 instead of Wi-Fi 7.The iPhone 16e is available in white or black and starts at $599/599 for 128GB. The 256GB model is $699, and the 512GB model is $899. Essentially, a $200/200 price reduction across the board compared to the iPhone 16.

  • iPhones may soon be able to use satellite connections indoors
    www.computerworld.com
Sending messages via satellite on iPhones should soon be as easy to as using your mobile network signal, as Apple and satellite partner Globalstar put a new satellite constellation into space. In anFCC request for authorization, Globalstar shared fresh information on how itsnew Apple-sponsored C-3 satellite networkshould provide much more robust connectivity and will be capable of working in cars and buildings. Thats a big deal, as it suggests satellite connections on the iPhone will become much easier; you might not even need to raise your smartphones in supplication to the satellites in the sky. What Globalstar told usIn itsFeb. 14 FCC filing, Globalstar explained that:The C3 satellite constellation will consist of 48 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. An additional six spare satellites will also be placed in orbit for backup. The network will be operated simultaneously and in conjunction with Globalstars existing HIBLEO-4 and HIBLEO-X deployments. The global buildout also means 90 new earth station antennas will be put in place at approximately 35 gateway stations situated in at least five nations. The constellation represents a $1 billion expenditure and follows a $1.1 billion investment from Apple revealed late 2024.The filing follows a recent patent formuch more stable satellite connectivity.A related filing in France seems in some way connected with Apple (more below).Better networking by designManufactured by Canadas MDA Space, the next-generation C3 satellites feature a series of exciting sounding technologies, including dynamic beamforming and higher EIRP transit tech. But perhaps the most exciting thing is that they promise more robust signal strength on the ground.Given this greater signal strength and the availability of multiple satellites overhead, users will have access to much-improved in-building and in-vehicle connectivity with less dependency on antenna orientation, the filing said.If youve used any of Apples satellite services, youll know that doing so involves a user raising their iPhone toward the sky and moving around to find the optimal connection. That experience seems set to improve.Building out Apples satellite servicesCan better connectivity enable Apple to enhance its satellite services? Thats not impossible. While it doesnt promise anything too specific, Globalstar does tell us the satellites will let it expand the products and services it does provide, including new, innovative direct-to-device satellite features on supported devices, such as Apples iPhones. Globalstar also says the system will enable it to offer additional commercial/enterprise IoT and consumer-based services.iPhone users in the US can use satellites to share Messages. The filing suggests this will become a more global service: Globalstar connectivity will be at the fingertips of hundreds of millions of people when their need to communicate is not met by terrestrial infrastructure. Thats a pretty clear promise of more to come, possibly to new forms of data connection, or perhaps the extension of existing satellite services to other devices, such asApple Watch.Apples blue skies thinkingOne more thing. The FCC request refers to anInternational Telecoms Unionfiling which describes a network of more than 8,000 satellites and includes satellite frequencies used by Globalstar. That filing was originally made on behalf of Frances Airbus, butSatnewsreports this was transferred to CCC Communication Holdings France, a French business entity thatseems to be managed by a senior Apple corporate director, Ronald Denwood.Denwood previously held directorships in Voysis, Ikinema, Stamplay, and OperateData, all of which were companies acquired by Apple at some point. Its important not to read too much into that, but it does seem fair to speculate that Denwoods involvement in CCC Communication Holdings France might illustrate thestrategic importanceof Apples satellite plans. Its worth noting that with the satellites offering a lifespan of just 12.5 years, whatever intentions Apple does have are likely to become more apparent in a relatively short time if the company intends to monetize its multi-billion dollar satellite investments before the birds retire. Meanwhile, of course, you can expect to be able to send messages even from within connectivity dead zones. You can follow me on social media! Join me onBlueSky, LinkedIn,Mastodon, andMeWe.
