• RTX 50 series no longer supports one of Nvidias oldest GPU technologies
    www.digitaltrends.com
Nvidia has wrapped up support for the 32-bit PhysX graphics technology. The brand has quietly removed the legacy SDK out of rotation, much to the chagrin of fans who still play the games that require the functionality.Nvidia confirmed the end-of-life status of the GPU-accelerated physics simulation SDK, which was known for cloth simulation, shattering glass, moving liquids, and several other particle effects. PhysX is endearingly associated with AAA gaming titles including the Batman Arkham trilogy, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 2, Metro: Last Light, Metro: Exodus, Metro 2033, Mirrors Edge, The Witcher 3, and certain older Assassins Creed titles.Recommended VideosDespite being popular during the 2000s and early 2010, PhysX began to go out of favor as Nvidia upgraded other aspects of its graphics components. Its RTX 50 series became Nvidias new standard GPU technology. Meanwhile, PhysX floundered because it was not compatible with other GPUs, consoles, and smartphones, Toms Hardware noted.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming The Verge also noted Redditors discussing their disappointment at the end of support for PhysX. One member detailed forcing PhysX to run the game Borderlands 2 with terrible results. Got drops to below 60 FPS by just standing and shooting a shock gun at a wall, they said. The commentator claims to have played on a high-end system featuring an RTX 5090 and an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. In comparison, they said they tested the same game with an RTX 4090 GPU and maintained 120fps.While its not for everyone, playing legacy games is a common hobby. Toms Hardware notes enthusiasts can keep PhysX support going on a PC running a RTX 50 series GPU and beyond by pairing it with an RTX 40 series or older graphics card, then tapping the latter component to work in the Nvidia control panel when necessary.Editors Recommendations

  • Meet Andrew Ferguson, the new chairman of the FTC who has vowed to go after Big Tech's 'vendetta against competition'
    www.businessinsider.com
Donald Trump tapped Andrew Ferguson to replace Lina Khan as chair of the Federal Trade Commission.Ferguson has vowed to take on Big Tech while paring back the FTC's recent focus on antitrust. Here's what we know about Ferguson and his priorities so far.Andrew Ferguson is in as Chair of the Federal Trade Commission. As the new leader of the government's key consumer protection agency, he'll oversee cases involving unfair, deceptive, and fraudulent business practices and have a major role in the future of Big Tech. The commissioner, who once clerked for Clarence Thomas, was nominated to the commission by Democratic President Joe Biden in 2023. The staunch Republican has vowed to uphold President Donald Trump's agenda as Chair, saying in a December statement that, under Trump's leadership, "American businesses will become stronger and more competitive, and will better serve workers and consumers, than ever before.""At the FTC, we will end Big Tech's vendetta against competition and free speech," Ferguson said in his statement, thanking Trump. "We will make sure that America is the world's technological leader and the best place for innovators to bring new ideas to life."Representatives for FTC declined to comment when reached by Business Insider. Here's what we know about Ferguson and his priorities as he leads the commission.FTC moves under FergusonWhile the FTC's agenda under Trump is just getting underway, Alden Abbott, a former general counsel of the Federal Trade Commission who is familiar with Ferguson's thinking, told Business Insider he expects the commission under Ferguson's leadership to focus on traditional enforcement approaches at the agency and, in most cases, stop pursuing former chair Lina Khan's expansive rulemaking arguments about consumer harm, which were seen by some as pushing the limits of established antitrust legal precedent and drew ire from some conservatives."He's smart," Abbott said. "I think he views himself as a conservative lawyer who believes in a strong executive reading in the text of a statute, textualism, and separation of powers. He fits the mold of the elite Federalist Society type of lawyer. So I think you're going to get a pretty aggressive FTC on things like antitrust consumer protection, maybe, but I think you'll you'll see less rulemaking."Since Trump took office, the FTC under Ferguson has moved to block Tempur Sealy's proposed $4 billion acquisition of Mattress Firm, proposed a $4.9 million fine against a payment processing company, accusing it of deceptive business practices, and filed a lawsuit against the three largest prescription drug benefit managers for "engaging in anticompetitive and unfair rebating practices that have artificially inflated the list price of insulin drugs," according to case proceedings.Under his tenure as chair, Ferguson will oversee the illegal monopolization claims against four major US tech companies Google, Apple, Amazon, and Meta brought by the FTC and the Department of Justice.Abbott said he expects Ferguson to continue pursuing these cases, though he doesn't anticipate the FTC under his leadership will seek major breakups of the big firms as potential remedies. Instead, Abbott said, he expects Ferguson to seek policy or contract changes to remedy antitrust concerns."One unknown is that Ferguson has said he's concerned about the politicization of these platforms and concerned about the government coercing platforms or working with platforms to engage in political censorship; stuff like that," Abbott said. "Those would be rather novel cases under existing antitrust laws. And I don't know how he'd want to pursue those, but I do think he's going to he said he wants to be a vigorous enforcer."Keen alignment with the Trump administrationSince Trump announced Ferguson's appointment as chair of the FTC, Ferguson has made clear his willingness to advance the Trump administration's priorities. In posts on X, Ferguson praised Trump's nomination of Mark Meador to fill an empty commissioner seat at the FTC, and highlighted his readiness to "implement President Trump's agenda" at the agency.Do you work for the FTC? Contact the reporter with tips at ktangalakislippert@businessinsider.comShortly after Trump's inauguration, Ferguson announced that the FTC, under his leadership, would enthusiastically comply with Trump's order to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in government offices."DEI is a scourge on our institutions," Ferguson said in a post on X in late January. "President Trump promised the American people that he would end it. He has done so in three amazing executive orders. Under my leadership, the FTC is doing its part to end the DEI plague. We are done with DEI at the FTC. No DEI office, no DEI influence on hiring, no DEI programming. It is over."Ferguson led the FTC in closing the commission's DEI office, placing all employees within that office on administrative leave, and removing materials promising DEI on the commission's website. He also ordered a review of all FTC contracts, an internal audit of the commission's office, and a review of previous commission orders "to ensure that the Biden Administration's DEI dictates did not make their way into formal Commission decisions," an FTC press release related to the decision read.Ferguson's alignment with Trump has already ruffled the feathers of the democrat appointee on the commission. Commissioner Alvaro M. Bedoya, another Biden nominee, dissented from Ferguson's anti-DEI initiative with a statement that criticized Ferguson's first official move as chair, reading: "Chairman Ferguson could have done any number of things to actually lower the cost of living and create opportunities for American businesses and workers. He did none of them. Instead, he cancelled 'DEI.'"Former Supreme Court clerk turned solicitor generalAccording to his FTC biography, the Virginia native earned his undergraduate degree and law degrees from the University of Virginia, one of the top 10 law schools in the country. After law school, Ferguson served as a clerk for Judge Karen L. Henderson on the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and, from 2016 to 2017, for US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. He also practiced antitrust law at several prominent Washington D.C. law firms, where he represented private clients in litigation, before pivoting to more prominent roles in government.Ferguson served as chief counsel to Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky from 2019 to 2021, before being selected in 2022 to serve as a solicitor general of Virginia. There, he oversaw appellate litigation, represented the southern state before the Supreme Court, and defended Virginia's laws from constitutional challenges. After his 2023 nomination to the FTC by the Biden administration as part of Biden's initiative to include bipartisan nominations to key offices Ferguson was unanimously confirmed to serve as one of the agency's five commissioners. He took office in March 2024, with a six-year term scheduled to end in September 2030.

  • Now We Know Exactly When The Last of Us Season 2 Is Coming
    gizmodo.com
Its been a couple years waiting for the return of HBOs seminal adaptation of Naughty Dogs post-apocalyptic, cinematic trauma simulator The Last of Usnot unlike waiting for the next chapter in a video game saga. But now, after a long, long time, we finally know:The Last of Us is back April 13. In a new press release HBO confirmed that the seven-episode sophomore season will begin just a couple of months from now in the 9 p.m. ET/PT slot on the cable network on Sunday, April 13, with episodes simultaneously releasing to stream on Max. To mark the news, three new posters were also released, featuring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and series newcomer Kaitlyn Dever as Joel, Ellie, and Abby, respectively. The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date Posters HBO HBO HBO Season two will pick up five years after the events of The Last of Us debut season, which ended with Joel making the controversial decision to save Ellie from a Firefly facility where she had been taken for experimentation to develop a potential cure to the cordyceps virus that had ravaged the world, based on her own immunity. Beginning to adapt the events of Naughty Dogs own 2020 video game sequelThe Last of Us Part II, the season will follow Joel and Ellie as they come into conflict with not just with the ever-evolving apocalyptic world around them, but also each other. Aside from its truncated episode count, the only other certain thing we know about season two so far is that it will only cover part of the events ofPart II, rather than completely adapting the game as season one did for the first game. The Last of Us had initially planned to only run for three seasons, but in splitting its take onPart II across multiple seasons, the opportunity for more than just a second and third season has remained on the table. We dont think that were going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [two and three] because were taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season one too, showrunner Craig Mazin said in an interview with Deadline last summer. We feel like its almost assuredly going to be the case thatas long as people keep watching and we can keep making more televisionseason three will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season four. What that means for where season two pauses the story? Well, game fans have been speculating about that almost as long as weve been waiting for season twp. At least now we know that we dont have much longer to wait before we start finding out ourselves. • NASA Captures Devastating Tennessee Floods From Space After Winter Storm Drenches Region
    gizmodo.com
By Isaac Schultz Published February 19, 2025 | Comments (1) | The flooded area as seen on February 17. Image: Michala Garrison, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey. A large winter storm system that moved across the East Coast over the weekend caused serious floods in Tennessee and Kentucky, as seen in newly released NASA satellite images. The images show the Mississippi Rivers serpentine path in western Tennessee and eastern Arkansas and Missouri. They also show the rivers and water bodies east of the Mississippiin Tennesseeinundated by up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain over a 48-hour period. A state of emergency was declared in Tennessee after a levee failure near the town of Rives, on the Obion River, which is the overflowed waterway in the top-right of the above image. It was a wild week for weather. More than half the states were hit with winter weather advisories, while 11 states received flash flood watches. On the west coast, California was slammed with mudslide-triggering rains. The serious flood conditions in Tennessee and Kentucky were severe enough to be visible from space. NASAs Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on the agencys Landsat 9 captured false-color images of the rivers in western Tennessee on February 17. NASA used specific color bands in the images to help viewers distinguish between water, land, and vegetation. According to a National Weather Service summary, the majority of the rain fell on Valentines Day, and at least a dozen river sites had crests within the top five recorded crests. In Kentucky, 30 flood warnings and 47 flash flood warnings were issued, as well as 11 severe thunderstorm warnings and two tornado warnings. More than 300 roads were closed and tens of thousands were without power.According to NASAs Earth Observatory, a U.S. Geological Survey water gauge in Obion, Tennessee, recorded a staggering water level of 39.8 feet (12 meters) yesterday. Any water level above 34 feet (10.4 meters) is considered a flood stage. Hydrographs showing affected rivers in Kentucky are also available on the services website. Cloud cover over the state prevented satellites from capturing similar images north of Tennessee, where some of the most destructive flash flooding happened.Thats not all Mother Nature wrote for the area. According to the weather service, flurries and snow showers are expected in western Kentucky today, with temperatures only creeping into the lower 20s days after the severe floods. The snowy conditions are also expected in southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Isaac Schultz Published February 18, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 17, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 17, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published February 12, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 12, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 11, 2025
