• Loader Monteith completes three-bedroom home in rural Angus
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The brief from the clients a couple who work in the construction and building materials industries was to design a home they could craft and make their own, and in which would have a connection out to the landscape. When they purchased the plot of land in 2009, there was already a ruined byre standing on the site. Loader Monteith chose to integrate stone from this byre into the design. This has not only reduced the carbon impact of the project and helped its material circularity but has also meant elements of the local vernacular architecture were incorporated into the house. The house is laid out in an L-shape plan, which is arranged in order to capture views for the main living spaces while preserving privacy from the entrance side for spaces like bedrooms.AdvertisementThe walls of one of the two new volumes uses the reclaimed Scottish Carmyllie stone from the byre, while the durable sinusoidal coloured-metal roofs are inspired by those of local agricultural buildings. Inside, a living room, kitchen and dining area, three bedrooms and two bathrooms are accommodated and the interiors feature floated polished concrete floors and floor-to-ceiling windows.Operational costs are kept low through double-glazing, high levels of insulation and airtightness, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and an air source heat pump. One of the client couple, a skilled joiner, took on the roles of self-builder, project manager and carpenter in the aftermath of the pandemic.Architects viewThis project was particularly special as it was the first to come into our office after lockdown began. Our clients, Angie and Colin, approached us after seeing our project Strone of Glenbanchor and we were immediately drawn to their vision. Discovering the stone byre during our site visit sparked our interest even further. The house is designed to embrace stunning, unobstructed vistas from home, ensuring the connection between interior spaces and exterior farmland.Matt Loader, founding director, Loader MonteithOur clients were at the heart of this project, bringing their creativity and dedication to every stage of the process. Colins precision and attention to detail in execution were instrumental in bringing the design to life exactly as envisioned.Jamie Mack, architect, Loader MonteithClients' viewWe were inspired by the old bothies we encountered on our walks around the Highlands, particularly their homely feel and connection to the landscape. It was important to us that our new home captured that same sense of history and belonging.Angie LeslieEach stage was carefully considered and planned. • Tether backs stablecoin liquidity provider Mansa in $10M seed round
    techcrunch.com
As payment companies increasingly explore stablecoins for cross-border payments and real-time settlement, some startups are tapping into the zeitgeist by providing liquidity via a revolving line of credit in stablecoins. One of them is Dubai-based but Africa-focused Mansa, whose offering allows payments companies to settle transactions and fund customer accounts instantly. The startup has raised $10 million in seed funding including both equity and debt. Stablecoin provider Tether led the $3 million equity investment. The funds will support the companys expansion into Latin America and Southeast Asia, regions where liquidity challenges also limit cross-border transactions.Mansa says its model improves clients cash flow at a lower cost than fiat alternatives, positioning it as a key player in the future of payments. Its co-founders, CEO Mouloukou Sanoh and COO Nkiru Uwaje, bring several years of expertise in finance, payments and web3.Sanoh, an investor in several African fintechs, previously worked at web3 VC firm Adaverse. Uwaje was an innovation manager at SWIFT and led blockchain strategy for Dell in the U.K. and Ireland.Cross-border payments are crucial to global commerce, but many payment providers face liquidity shortages, leading to delayed settlements and higher operational costs, especially in emerging markets. Remittance costs average 6.5% globally, disproportionately affecting developing regions. With cross-border payments expected to reach $290.2 trillion annually by 2030, inefficiencies in the current system could cost businesses billions.Stablecoins are finding product-market fit in emerging marketsMansa says it addresses this by offering fast, flexible embedded pre-funding solutions, completing due diligence in under a month. And unlike traditional lenders, it underwrites loans based on real-time transaction data rather than collateral while sourcing liquidity at scale through decentralized finance (DeFi). It aggregates capital from DeFi platforms, quant funds, family offices, and hedge funds. For its seed round, Mansa secured $7 million in liquidity from some of these institutions. Meanwhile, other investors that participated in the equity round alongside Tether include Faculty Group, Octerra Capital, Polymorphic Capital, and Trive Digital.Payments are moving on chain, but in order for payments to move on chain you need to have the on-chain liquidity to be able to settle instantly, Sanoh told TechCrunch. That is why our partnership with Tether is so consequential and why were working very closely together to make it the primary stablecoin in emerging markets.Despite USDCs rapid growth last year, the founders said Mansa is bullish on Tether due to its broad accessibility, usage flexibility, and market dominance, which continues to expand alongside rising on-chain payment activity, especially in emerging markets. It also makes sense that Mansas customers are not based in Europe, where Tether and nine other digital assets were recently delisted from EU-regulated platforms for not meeting MiCA compliance standards. Tether still holds 70% of the market share, in terms of trading volume, among stablecoins globally.Still, from a compliance perspective, Mansa says its focused on regulatory adherence. The fintech recently hired the former head of HSBC North Asia and the chief legal officer of Franklin Templeton to strengthen its regulatory oversight. Similarly, the stablecoin liquidity platform says its building robust risk frameworks for liquidity and payments, ensuring compliance with AML checks, sanction screening, KYC (Know Your Customer), KYB (Know Your Business), active transaction monitoring, and blockchain analytics tools. Were building a fintech, and we approach everything with that mindset, Nkiru stressed.Meanwhile, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the stablecoin provider is proud to collaborate with Mansa and support their efforts to reshape global payment infrastructure. So far, Mansa has disbursed over $18 million in payments financed to its clients, with access to over $200 million in liquidity through its partner network. The fintech claims it doesnt have any defaults so far.Similarly, its transaction volume has surged since launching six months ago, from $1.6 million in August to $11 million in January, compounding at a monthly growth rate of 37.5%. It has processed nearly $31 million in that period. The company expects to reach a $1 billion total payment volume (TPV) run rate this year, up from its current $240 million run rate, Sanoh disclosed. The two-year-old fintech serves a broad range of clients, including B2B payment platforms, virtual card providers, stablecoin infrastructure, forex platforms, and remittance companies operating in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. These clients have reported a 30% increase in transaction volumes and a 10% revenue boost since onboarding, the fintech said. Meanwhile, Mansas own revenues generated from fees on financed transactions have grown 350% in the past six months.Lending is Mansas starting point. But theres more it wants to do, according to Sanoh. Were starting by being the primary liquidity provider to the biggest payment companies across emerging markets, CEO Sanoh explained. From there, we can handle payouts and also offer additional services like foreign exchange. The goal is to create a one-stop payment platform where they can finance their payments, settle transactions instantly, and access foreign currency seamlessly all in one place, said the CEO, adding that its an evolution that could see it become an on-chain version of Stripe.

  • How Gen AI is being used in VFX right now (VES Panel).
    www.fxguide.com
GenAIChatGPT has undeniably been the poster child for the generative AI (GenAI) revolution, capturing both headlines and imaginations. But as AI-powered tools continue to push the boundaries of creative content generation, its clear that GenAIs impact extends far beyond chatbots. This week, the Visual Effects Society (VES) is hosting a timely panel discussion exploring GenAIs role in the VFX industry, featuring a roster of experts with hands-on experience at the cutting edge of AI-driven artistry. Among them is visual effects supervisor Jim Geduldick, a longtime friend of fxguide and a recognized pioneer in the intersection of virtual production, machine learning, and computer vision within visual effects and filmmaking.Jim Geuldick, VFX Sup, Virutal Production expert and FilmmakerGeduldicks career spans decades of creative problem-solving, from real-time rendering to LED volumes, making him an ideal candidate to demystify the impact of AI in visual effects. With AIs rapid evolution, panel discussions like this are becoming increasingly critical. AI may not yet have a digital consciousness or a theory of mind popular in sci-fi movies, but it is getting closer to helping VFX artists create those movies.Joining Geduldick on the VES panel are other prominent voices in the space, including avant-garde AI artist Minta Carlson, concept artist and digital sculptor Martin Nebelong (who has worked extensively with AI tools such as OpenAIs SORA), and creative technologist Don Allen Stevenson III. The discussion promises to examine AIs influence from multiple perspectivestechnical, artistic, and cultural. We sat down with Jim Geduldick to preview the panel, and he emphasized the need to distinguish between GenAI and AI as a whole. A lot of what we do now is just educating clients, studios, and labels, he said. So much of the discourse around AI in VFX gets lumped into good, bad, or uglywith people assuming its just tools like Runway ML or SORA. But in reality, were talking about a range of technologies, from machine learning to computer vision, that have been foundational to VFX for years. The need for education around these technologies is not new. AI represents just the latest in a series of technological shifts that have required industry-wide adaptation. AI is already woven into the fabric of VFXoften in ways that go unnoticed. The misconception that AI is only about generative tools is one of the biggest hurdles, Geduldick explained. AI is in render denoising, deep compositing, and countless other aspects of production, yet the public doesnt realise how much were already relying on it.One of the most persistent misconceptions is the belief that using an AI model inherently contributes to its training data, which is not the case. Training Data is used to make the model, but to run the model doesnt have to contribute to the model. Naturally, many in our industry remain concerned about copyright issues, fearing that running an AI model on local project automatically integrates that data into a global dataset. People freak out over copyright issues, assuming that running an AI model on local data means that data is automatically being added to a massive public dataset, Geduldick said. But training data can be air-gapped. Studios can keep their AI tools completely self-contained and secure, just as they do with cloud computing.Beyond legal and ethical considerations, Geduldicks focus at the VES panel will be on AIs practical applications in VFX. His discussion will explore how AI is already enhancing production pipelines today. For example, the way we approach site scans and data wrangling has changed with AI-assisted depth capture, he said. Were integrating LIDAR scans with machine learning to automate tedious tasks, allowing artists to focus on creative work.A particularly promising area of AI-driven innovation is the use of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and Gaussian splats for location and set surveying. Geduldick has been actively involved in this space, contributing to early research with NVIDIA. Were getting closer to a state of maturity where NeRFs and splats can be viable for production, he noted. That said, we still face challengesocclusion errors, data quality issues, and the need for additional processing to make these formats truly production-ready.Another major focus for Geduldick is the role of AI in digital doubles. Several of his recent projects have required the creation of digital doubles for actors who are no longer living. One thing that Ive come across, especially this last year, was having to do a lot more doubles with people that have passed on, he said. The challenge is that if we dont have a person that we can scan today, we need to find someone with similar facial structure to make it believable. AI can really work well using techniques such as DeepFakes. The quality of training data remains a key factor in AI-generated assets, and Geduldick emphasized the increasing importance of synthetic data in addressing these challenges. AI-generated training datasets can be incredibly useful for avoiding copyright issues and ensuring data quality, he noted. Yet, its a topic that often gets overlooked in these discussions. The VES panel is scheduled for Thursday, February 20th, beginning at 11:00 AM PST. Given the high level of interest, the session is expected to extend beyond its allotted time to accommodate audience questions. With AI in VFX becoming a highly debated topic, this discussion aims to offer clarity and practical insights rather than speculative hype. Geduldicks focus will be on real-world applications and current production pipelines, reinforcing the idea that AI is not a replacement for artists but a tool that, when used effectively, enhances the creative process. AI is a tool, not a magic button, he said. Its about finding ways to use it effectively, not replacing the artistry that makes visual effects so compelling. In a rapidly evolving industry, such discussions are essential to ensuring that AI is leveraged in ways that support and elevate visual storytelling. The panel is on this week, Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 11:00AM (PST), (which is 1:00PM (CST), 2:00PM (EST), 7:00PM (GMT), 8:00PM (CET), Friday, February 21, 2025 at 12:30AM (IST), 6:00AM (AEST), 8:00AM (NZST))

While it is possible, Alves and the Professional Fighters League dont seem to be a match. Ive spoken with the PFLs head man Donn Davis, and he told me the promotion is more focused on signing young up-and-comers over veterans.Even if Alves continues to fight, he doesnt appear to be a candidate for a return to the UFC down the road, barring a last-minute replacement for a short-notice fight. As it is, his career has been better than most but probably not quite on par with what he hopedor what most expected when he came firing out of the blocks on TUF.Whats Next for the UFC?The UFC is already in Seattle for a Fight Night card headlined by Henry Cejudo taking on Song Yadong. • Does the iPhone 6e have a microSD card slot?
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsIs there a microSD slot in the iPhone 6e?Why doesnt Apple include a microSD card slot? What about iCloud storage?Apple has unveiled the all-new iPhone 6e, a new $599 replacement for the iPhone SE line. The spiritual successor to the iPhone SE introduces several changes to the iPhone SE, including an OLED panel and Face ID, while jettisoning the Touch ID Home button and more prominent bezels.Apple has long resisted certain hardware trends in the smartphone industry, and one of the most consistent omissions in its devices is expandable storage. Whether youre considering a high-end iPhone or an entry-level model like the iPhone SE, your storage options consistently remain limited to what Apple provides out of the box. So, does the iPhone 6e break this trend and offer a microSD card slot?Recommended VideosIf you were hoping to expand the storage of the iPhone 6e with a microSD card, youre out of luck. Just like every iPhone before it, the iPhone 6e does not include a microSD card slot. Apple has never included expandable storage in any of its smartphones, and the iPhone 6e is no exception.RelatedInstead, Apple offers its usual range of storage options, starting at 128GB for $599, with 256FB and 512GB options for $699 and $899 for those who need more space. If you tend to store a lot of photos, videos, and apps, youll need to choose a model with enough storage at the time of purchase, as theres no way to add more later. There are a few reasons Apple has never embraced microSD cards. First, Apple prefers to keep tight control over its hardware and software experiences. Limiting your storage to the various internal options available means Apple can ensure consistent performance without having to worry about the potential speed and reliability issues that can come with third-party microSD cards.Another reason is Apples emphasis on iCloud and its ecosystem. The company encourages iPhone users to use its cloud storage service, iCloud, to store files, photos, and backups rather than expanding physical storage. This is a great way to keep users relying on Apples services and it also means potentially buying another iPhone later for more space. If youre concerned about running out of storage on your iPhone 6e, Apples iCloud offers ways to expand it for a fee each month, depending on how much you need. Plus, there are ways you can save space by doing a bit of housekeeping. With iCloud Photos, enabling the Optimize iPhone Storage feature means that only smaller, space-saving versions of your images and videos are stored on your device. The full-resolution originals are safely kept in iCloud and can be accessed whenever you need them with a tap, so you in turn save yourself a bit of time and money. For the rest of your files, iCloud Drive lets you store things in the cloud, which means less on-device clutter. Apples cloud storage system also supports offloading unused apps, so you can take them off of your phone while keeping your personal data. If you need an offloaded app again, reinstalling it restores all associated information so you can free up space without losing all the important data attached to it.Editors Recommendations
