• This Radical Watch Design Turns The Body Into A Clasp
    www.yankodesign.com
Ive seen watches with buckles, clasps, velcro, and even magnetic closures but Ive never seen anything like this before.Dubbed rather simply as the Watch Concept, this timepiece from Swiss architect-turned-designer Johan Link explores something fascinatingly new. The watch opens and closes at the body, which means the body is quite literally its clasp, with a two-piece metal outer shell that opens up to reveal an acrylic core that has the watch encased inside.Designer: Johan LinkWords dont do justice to Johans Watch Concept, but the GIF above displays his new clasp mechanism perfectly. Most watch clasps are 3-piece linkages located on the lower side of the strap. Johan shifts the entire clasp linkage to the top, integrating it INTO the watchs body. This means the case splits into two, with the watch underneath. When shut, youve got a watch thats somewhat trapped inside its metal shell.Links aesthetic is fairly metal-leaning, with a watch case that obscures most of the watch inside, revealing just the hands through a donut-shaped cutout. The strap has a metallic finish too, and when closed, you really have a watch that goes heavy on the minimalism. Open the clasp, however, and you understand how much detail hides behind this minimalist facade. The watchs inner core sits within a transparent acrylic shell, mirroring the appeal of those aggressively domed sapphire glass pieces seen on most high-end watches. You have the numerals printed directly on the glass, with yellow watch hand underneath that contrast wonderfully against the black watch face. On the reverse, you see the watchs movement, clearly visible behind the acrylic facade. A cutout on the metal casing on the back acts as an exhibition window of sorts. The watch crown sits at 3 oclock, and if theres one complaint I have, its that the crown hides inside the metal case when shut, making it inaccessible. You can wear the watch like you regularly would, clasping it around your wrist, or open it up to view the time in your palm the way youd hold a pocket watch. Theres nothing functionally superior about Johans watch concept, but watches are more about art, fashion, and expression than pure specs and functionality. By that metric, Johans experiment is quite the winner, resulting in a watch that looks and feels unique. The design may be conceptual for now, but you know that it would be a technical masterpiece too, given that Johans roots are in Switzerland, the very epicenter of haute horology. You might know Johan from some of his other famous works like the Babot a robotic side table that can catch anything you throw onto it, or the Link-1, a wristwatch that Johan built quite literally from scratch. A lot of Johans work defies convention, opting for new form factors, new user experiences, and an overall creative relook at the world around us.The post This Radical Watch Design Turns The Body Into A Clasp first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • A Nokia Lumia Running iOS 18? This Hacker Created The Ultimate Tech Mashup Of 2025
    www.yankodesign.com
Just this Monday we saw a YouTuber do something we never thought possible put a USB-C port port on a Nokia 3310 from 25 years ago. Why? Because a phone if theres something that makes the 3310 more indestructible than it already is, its a series of tech upgrades! However, if you thought that was ambitious, wait until you see whats next. A hacker going by the Reddit handle OceanDepth95028 has given the world the NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE, a Frankenstein creation that shoves an iPhone SE 3s internals into the shell of a beloved Windows Phone relicthe Lumia 1020. The result? A device that runs iOS but looks like it just stepped out of 2013.The project is equal parts nostalgia and absurdity. Lumia phones, with their colorful polycarbonate bodies and gorgeous curved displays, had a cult following. The 1020, in particular, was legendary for its 41MP cameraa sensor so powerful it still gets name-dropped in photography discussions today. But this LumiPhone? The only thing left from the original Lumia is the shell and the front glass. Everything inside is pure iPhone SE 3, powered by Apples A15 Bionic chip and running iOS 18.3.1 like any standard iPhone. If the Lumia 1020 was a Windows Phone purists dream, this is some kind of multiverse glitch.Designer: OceanDepth95028The creator of this hybrid masterpiece describes it as a Mac motherboard inside an office PC chassis. And honestly, that analogy is spot on. The moment you fire it up, youre greeted by the familiar world of iOS, a stark contrast to the live tiles that once defined Windows Phones aesthetic. The integration is so deep that the LumiPhone still receives OTA updates, has working 5G, and supports Apple CarPlay. The only things that dont work? Wireless charging and Apple Pay. A small price to pay for the sheer joy of confusing tech enthusiasts everywhere. The craftsmanship here is meticulous. The front glass from the Lumia has been relaminated to fit the slightly larger iPhone SE 3s LCD. The iPhones selfie camera was carefully transplanted into the Lumias original location. Even the physical buttons remain in place, with a clever hack that hooks up the classic Lumia camera shutter button to the volume switch. Want to snap a photo? Sure. Want to use it as an extra volume-down button for no real reason? Go ahead, because it does that too.And then theres the back. The original Lumia 1020s massive Oreo-style camera bump is still there, but it no longer houses the 41MP PureView sensor. Instead, the iPhone SE 3s 12MP camera is centered on the bump, with a transplanted Touch ID sensor right below it. Its a back-mounted fingerprint scanner in the year 2025, making this one of the rare times an iPhone borrows a feature from old-school Androids. Oh, and the Xenon flash? Its just decoration now, because some things are sacred. One of the most amusing details is the port situation. At first glance, the LumiPhone appears to have a classic Micro-USB port, a staple of old Lumia devices. But look closer, and youll realize its actually Apples Lightning port, disguised in a Micro-USB shell. Its the kind of small, unnecessary attention to detail that makes projects like this so fun. The SIM card slot was also custom-built to match the Lumias original placement. Meanwhile, the headphone jack is gone, plugged up for sealing purposes, because lets be real, getting a 3.5mm jack back into an iPhone is a battle even modders dont want to fight. But heres the wildest part: this isnt just some proof-of-concept that barely runs. Its a fully functioning daily driver. The creator even mentions it has 93% battery health, a solid signal, and works just fine as a second phone. Imagine casually pulling this out in public, watching someone recognize the Lumia design, and then seeing their brain short-circuit as iOS 18 loads up. Its Cognitive Dissonance Pro Max like watching Jason Statham act in a rom com. Or Zooey Deschanel hunt zombies. What makes this project fascinating is that it highlights two completely different design philosophies colliding. The Lumia 1020 was a love letter to photography, designed for a time when Microsoft still believed it could carve out a space in the smartphone world. Its curvy, colorful polycarbonate body screamed confidence. Meanwhile, the iPhone SE 3 is the definition of safe, predictable designa modern device wrapped in a chassis that Apple barely updated from the iPhone 6 era. Merging them is a bizarre yet strangely beautiful contradiction. The LumiPhone 1020 SE is both a tribute to Windows Phones past and an amusing reminder that in some alternate universe, Lumia hardware couldve housed iOS.Make no mistake, this project isnt about practicality. Nobody was sitting around wishing they could run iOS 18 on a Lumia 1020. But thats what makes it brilliantit exists purely because someone wanted to see if they could. The Lumia 1020 was a love letter to photography, a defiant burst of color and personality from a time when Microsoft still believed it could take on Apple and Google. Meanwhile, the newly released iPhone 16E is the complete opposite: a safe, familiar rectangle that Apple barely bothered to visually update from the iPhone 11 era. Merging them is like dressing Tim Cook in a bright yellow Nokia jumpsuitcompletely unnecessary, but undeniably entertaining. And yet, here we are, with a Lumia 1020 that not only runs iOS but does so flawlessly. It gets OTA updates. It works with Apple CarPlay. It has a Touch ID sensor where the camera should be. Its absurd in all the best ways, like a tech multiverse glitch that somehow made it into reality. Theres something oddly poetic about a Windows Phone refusing to die, even if it had to borrow an iPhones internals to keep the dream alive. If nothing else, this proves that nostalgia, determination, and a little bit of madness can produce some of the coolest creations. The post A Nokia Lumia Running iOS 18? • Amazon concedes that Chime SDK makes far more sense than the Chime application itself
    www.computerworld.com
Amazons announcement on Wednesday that it is abandoning its Chime collaboration app, while stressing that it will double down on the far more successful Chime software development kit (SDK), was an example of Amazon being Amazon. It knows what it does well, and where to focus.Analysts said that the Chime app made some sense when it was introduced in February 2017, but that sharply changed in 2000 when the pandemic hit. Microsoft and Zoom added lots of new functionality to their collaboration platforms, but Amazon didnt add much to Chime. And over the years, rivals have continued to beef up their products.Chimes feature set quickly was outshone and its market share plunged; currently its share is negligible, with one firm placing it at literally 0.0%.Amazon itself described its Chime app market share as limited, and conceded that its competitors, which it referred to as partners, had outpaced it.When we decide to retire a service or feature, it is typically because weve introduced something better or our partners offer a solution that is a good fit for our customers as well as our own employees, said an Amazon media relations contact who asked that his name not be used. In Chimes case, its use outside of Amazon was limited and our partners offer great collaboration solutions, so we will lean into those. In an internal memo to Amazon employees, the company threw its support behind key rivals. Zoom is replacing Amazon Chime as the standard meeting application for Amazon internal meetings, it said. Microsoft Teams will also be available for scenarios where full integration with M365 is needed. Cisco Webex will also be available for communication with customers who use Cisco Webex. The app has failed, but popular SDK prevailsThe Chime apps situation is almost the opposite of that of the popular Chime SDK. The lack of functionality that was so important to app users was irrelevant to users of the SDK, as enterprises and vendors used it as the foundation for capabilities they built into their own apps, including Slack Huddles and Intuits Virtual Expert Platform.Amazon also introduced its SDK much earlier than did Microsoft or Zoom, allowing the Chime SDK to build up a significant market share advantage, said Melody Brue, VP and principal analyst for Moor Insights & Strategy.Im not surprised at all [about the apps demise], Brue said. They really havent invested a whole lot into the Chime app.Jeremy Roberts, the senior director of research at Info-Tech Research Group, agreed. He said the decision to kill the Chime app while increasing support for the Chime SDK made perfect sense. My takeaway is that this is very logical. They never climbed to the top of the stack [with the app]. [Enterprises] didnt like the product, but they loved the infrastructure, Roberts said. Amazon is a good telescope manufacturer but not a good astronomer.Wayne Kurtzman, an IDC research VP, also noted that Amazon never promoted the Chime app, although they certainly could have.Amazon is really good at creating narratives, but Chime never had a good go-to-market strategy, Kurtzman said. It fell short in creating mindshare in a market that was growing incredibly rapidly. One year warning for users, migration help promisedIn Amazons public statement, the company said, After careful consideration, we have decided to end support for the Amazon Chime service, including Business Calling features, effective February 20, 2026. Amazon Chime will no longer accept new customers beginning February 19, 2025. Existing customers can continue to use Amazon Chime features, including Business Calling, scheduling and hosting meetings, adding and managing users, and other capabilities supported through the Amazon Chime administration console. It then pledged to help transition the few remaining Chime app users to other platforms, including solutions provided by AWS, such as AWS Wickr, or from AWS partners, such as Zoom from Zoom Video Communications Inc., Webex from Cisco Systems, Inc., and Slack from Salesforce.Alternative AWS Wickr should have its chance to shine, says analystHowever, Roberts questioned how long Amazon will support Wickr, given that it suffers from many of the same shortcomings as the Chime app. I dont see a lot of Wickr use with our enterprise clients, he said. But, he added, the robust security capabilities within Wickr may make it viable in select segments, such as governments. Will McKeon-White, a senior analyst with Forrester, was more optimistic about Wickr, arguing that an encrypted messaging app is going to have more staying power than a video conferencing one.Usually, replacing a messaging solution is much more difficult than replacing a video calling solution, McKeon-White said. Messaging needs to have integration into a whole host of different things. What it comes down to is that its much harder to replace.Part of the issue is that users often need to refer to messages from months earlier, but they rarely have to review old conference calls. That is why employees will often hang onto those old messaging apps even if the corporate standard has changed, because there is some critical thing that they need that messaging app for.IDCs Kurtzman also said that Wickr should get its chance to shine. They have a good security narrative and a good security story, which is advanced cryptography, he said, noting that should be a critical feature given that enterprises are putting all of the intellectual property of the business into their messages. He said that Wickr might be positioned as the glue to integrate different genAI offerings from different companies. In the end, said Roberts, the key enterprise IT takeaway from this is to stick with the dominant players in the collaboration space. It validates the decision to consolidate on the blue-chip collaboration solutions.
