WWW.MARKTECHPOST.COMDeepSeek AI Releases Smallpond: A Lightweight Data Processing Framework Built on DuckDB and 3FSModern data workflows are increasingly burdened by growing dataset sizes and the complexity of distributed processing. Many organizations find that traditional systems struggle with long processing times, memory constraints, and managing distributed tasks effectively. In this environment, data scientists and engineers often spend excessive time on system maintenance rather than extracting insights from data. The need for a tool that simplifies these processeswithout sacrificing performanceis clear.DeepSeek AI recently released Smallpond, a lightweight data processing framework built on DuckDB and 3FS. Smallpond aims to extend DuckDBs efficient, in-process SQL analytics into a distributed setting. By coupling DuckDB with 3FSa high-performance, distributed file system optimized for modern SSDs and RDMA networksSmallpond provides a practical solution for processing large datasets without the complexity of long-running services or heavy infrastructure overhead.Technical Details and BenefitsSmallpond is designed to work seamlessly with Python, supporting versions 3.8 through 3.12. Its design philosophy is grounded in simplicity and modularity. Users can quickly install the framework via pip and begin processing data with minimal setup. One key feature is the ability to partition data manually. Whether partitioning by file count, row numbers, or by a specific column hash, this flexibility allows users to tailor the processing to their particular data and infrastructure.Under the hood, Smallpond leverages DuckDB for its robust, native-level performance in executing SQL queries. The framework further integrates with Ray to enable parallel processing across distributed compute nodes. This combination not only simplifies scaling but also ensures that workloads can be handled efficiently across multiple nodes. Additionally, by avoiding persistent services, Smallpond reduces the operational overhead typically associated with distributed systems.InstallationPython 3.8 to 3.12 is supported.pip install smallpondQuick Start# Download example datawget https://duckdb.org/data/prices.parquetimport smallpond# Initialize sessionsp = smallpond.init()# Load datadf = sp.read_parquet("prices.parquet")# Process datadf = df.repartition(3, hash_by="ticker")df = sp.partial_sql("SELECT ticker, min(price), max(price) FROM {0} GROUP BY ticker", df)# Save resultsdf.write_parquet("output/")# Show resultsprint(df.to_pandas())Performance and InsightsIn performance tests using the GraySort benchmark, Smallpond demonstrated its capacity by sorting 110.5TiB of data in just over 30 minutes, achieving an average throughput of 3.66TiB per minute. These results illustrate how effectively the framework harnesses the combined strengths of DuckDB and 3FS for both compute and storage. Such performance metrics provide reassurance that Smallpond can meet the needs of organizations dealing with terabytes to petabytes of data. The open source nature of the project also means that users and developers can collaborate on further optimizations and tailor the framework to a variety of use cases.ConclusionSmallpond represents a measured yet significant step forward in distributed data processing. It addresses core challenges by extending the proven efficiency of DuckDB into a distributed environment, backed by the high-throughput capabilities of 3FS. With a focus on simplicity, flexibility, and performance, Smallpond offers a practical tool for data scientists and engineers tasked with processing large datasets. As an open source project, it invites contributions and continuous improvement from the community, making it a valuable addition to modern data engineering toolkits. Whether managing modest datasets or scaling up to petabyte-level operations, Smallpond provides a robust framework that is both effective and accessible.Check outthe GitHub Repo. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. WWW.BDONLINE.CO.UKAdrien Brody wins Best Actor Oscar for portraying an architect in The BrutalistSource: Universal PicturesAdrian Brody has been recognised for his performance asHungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor Lszl TthAdrien Brody has won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of architect Lszl Tth in The Brutalist, marking his second Oscar win after The Pianist in 2003.Directed by Brady Corbet, the film follows Tth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor, as he rebuilds his career in postwar America under the patronage of a wealthy industrialist. Brodys performance has been widely praised, securing him multiple accolades throughout the awards season, including a Golden Globe. The Brutalist has been one of the most talked-about films of the year, centred on its portrayal of architecture and the creative struggles of its protagonist. The character of Lszl Tth is partly inspired by real-life architect Marcel Breuer, a Hungarian-born designer and Bauhaus alumnus who emigrated to the United States. In the film, Tth is depicted as having had a successful career in prewar Hungary and as a graduate of the Bauhaus, but he arrives in early postwar America penniless and alone. He is forced to rebuild his life and career, developing a complex, abusive, and dependent relationship with industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, played by Guy Pearce.Architects have long been a presence in cinema, often portrayed as solitary visionaries or enigmatic figures. The Fountainhead (1949) presented Gary Coopers Howard Roark as an uncompromising genius battling against convention, while High-Rise (2015) depicted Jeremy Irons Anthony Royal as a detached creator watching his utopian vision unravel. More recently, Whered You Go, Bernadette (2019) followed Cate Blanchetts portrayal of a reclusive, once-brilliant architect struggling to reconnect with her craft.Beyond its success at the Oscars, The Brutalist has sparked debate within the architectural community.Discussions have centered on whether The Brutalist accurately represents the profession. Some architects have criticised its dramatic portrayal of the architectpatron relationship and its suggestion that Tths obsessive creative vision is both his downfall and his legacy. Writing in The Washington Post, architecture critic Philip Kennicott described the film as a mythologised view of the architect as a misunderstood prophet, rather than an engaged practitioner navigating real-world constraints.BDs reviewer, Sarah Simpkin, noted that The Brutalist is less about architecture itself and more about broader themes of power, trauma, and artistic integrity. While some architects have criticised its inaccuracies, she observed that the depiction of the architects lot is credible enough for its narrative purpose, highlighting the films dramatic treatment of real-world concerns such as value engineering, fee negotiations, and the struggle for creative control.>> Also read:Film review: The Brutalist It isnt really about brutalism0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 0 Anterior

WWW.ARCHITECTSJOURNAL.CO.UKDavid Kohn Architects completes Modern Art Oxford makeoverModern Art Oxford is housed in the former City Brewery building, designed in 1878 by Harry Drinkwater. The project focused on improving visual appearance, lighting and acoustics, while enhancing navigation and circulation, to create a more welcoming and inclusive venue.A key space is the new ground-floor gallery which has been designed with flexible display structures to host exhibitions that involve local artists and communities, part of the gallerys drive to strengthen creative engagement of visitors.AdvertisementWith much of the buildings historic fabric remaining intact, DKA looked to reveal and celebrate features such as the cast-iron columns and original brickwork, which recall the buildings industrial past while giving a rhythm and character to the gallery spaces.A new shop and caf designed by British artist Emma Hart is designed to both enhance visitors enjoyment of the gallery and support its economic sustainability. The buildings services and energy performance have also been upgraded.Architects viewWe have focused on the sequence of spaces from the street to the gallery choreographing visitors movements from the busy public realm outside, and refreshing their senses so that they can immerse themselves more fully in the displays. Our new ground-floor gallery complements Modern Art Oxfords other spaces engaging local audiences and drawing in people who might not have historically felt so welcome. It has been a real pleasure to work with director Paul Hobson and his team on the redevelopment programme. Modern Art Oxford is now a much more flexible and welcoming setting for contemporary art programming, and we have enjoyed working with them to harness their building to attract and build new audiences.David Kohn, founding director, David Kohn Architects Source:David Kohn ArchitectsProject dataStart on site June 2024Completion October 2024Gross internal floor area 600m2Project cost 2,000,000Project cost per m2 3,333Architect David Kohn ArchitectsClient Modern Art OxfordStructural engineer Mike Wilford AssociatesM&E consultant MethodQuantity surveyor RidgeProject manager RidgePrincipal designer David Kohn ArchitectsApproved building inspector SocotecMain contractor KingerleeArtist Emma HartGraphic designer Kellenberger WhiteJoinery Weber IndustriesCaf fabrication The White Wall CompanyLighting design TM LightingCAD software used VectorworksCO2 emissions Not available0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 0 Anterior

WWW.CNET.COMTCL's 60 Phone Series Expands With 108-Megapixel Cameras, Bigger BatteriesThe TCL 60 series of phones is expanding with the company's Monday reveal at Mobile World Congress 2025. TCL highlighted its plans internationally forlower-cost phone models that have a 108-megapixel main camera, more NxtPaper displays that mimic eReaders and big 5,200mAh batteries with 18W wired charging. The TCL 60 series first debuted in January at CES 2025 with the $200 TCL 60 XE NxtPaper 5G that will head to the US market later this year. The TCL 60 XE will be joined by several variations of both TCL's NxtPaper devices and phones with traditional displays that are set for release in Asia, Europe and Latin American markets.Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From Barcelona The TCL 60 SE NxtPaper 5G. TCLThe TCL 60 SE NxtPaper 5G has a 6.7-inch display, 5,200 mAh battery, support for AI tools like a writing assistant, an IP54 rating for splash and dust resistance and 18GB of memory paired up with 256GB of storage. That phone will cost 189 euros, which roughly converts to $195.The TCL 60 NxtPaper -- without any additional letters in its name -- has a slightly larger 6.8-inch display, a 108-megapixel main camera (which we rarely see in these price ranges) and up to 512GB of internal storage. Like the SE phone, it will also include 18GB of memory and a 5,200mAh battery. That phone will cost 199 euros. The entire TCL 60 series unveiled at MWC 2025. TCLTCL's non-NxtPaper devices range in price from 109 euros to 169 euros. On the low end of this price range is the TCL 605 which has 128GB of storage, a 50-megapixel main camera and a 5,200mAh battery. While on the higher-end are the TCL 60 5G and TCL 60 SE. The 60 SE has a 6.67-inch display, a 50-megapixel main camera, 8GB of memory and 512GB of storage. The 60 5G -- without any additional letters -- gets a 6.8-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor and has 6GB of memory along with 256GB of storage. While most of these phones aren't coming to the US, this lineup does give a few hints about what could be coming to phones that cost $200 and less from TCL and other phone companies. For the last few years, phone batteries in these lower-cost phones have kept to 5,000mAh -- which as it is often last a full day -- but companies like OnePlus are starting to push those capacities even higher in more expensive phones. Its promising to see that lower-cost devices can start bumping up the battery capacity.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 0 Anterior
