  • Yellowjackets biggest moment this week was about its smallest mystery
    www.polygon.com
Shauna (Melanie Lynskey, as an adult) is not happy about the gold necklace situation at the end of the latest Yellowjackets episode.Which is understandable. At the very least, its a token from her dead best friend, someone shes haunted by the mere thought of, and sometimes scared she lives in the total shadow of (for starters). Beyond that, theres the strangeness of its time in the wilderness alongside Shauna and Lottie (played here as an adult by Simone Kessell): What exactly the gold Tiffany necklace took to symbolize in the woods is still an open question. The scene itself, at the end of Thems the Brakes, doesnt give us a ton to go on. Shauna recoils when she sees it and immediately seems bewildered, wondering how Lottie even has it. It feels right, Shauna, Lottie excitedly exclaims. Dont you feel it, too? While Shauna is completely unmoored by the idea that it should be given to her daughter, Callie (Sarah Desjardins), at all, Lottie is defensive, calmly trying to reason with her about how it never meant what you thought it meant.Which is one of many questions that fans have been trying to puzzle through for two seasons now: So what does the necklace actually mean to the Yellowjackets?Theres plenty of theories based on how weve seen it pass right now. Jackie first puts it on Shauna when theyre on the plane in the pilot episode an act of love, since Shauna is nervous to fly. It passes back to Jackie before she dies, and passes to Nat before she dies as well (though it also kept her safe during her first hunt). But perhaps most pressingly: The first place we actually get to see it is the pilots cold open on the Pit Girl being hunted by the remaining Yellowjackets, who dies by falling on a spike trap. For whatever Lottie seems to think the necklace really means to the Yellowjackets cult, it seems like at least narratively it does not mean good things. Which makes it pretty understandable that Shauna reacted that way.The problem is, of course, that Callie has no understanding of any of this which, unfortunately for Shauna, is exactly what Callie finds so great about Lottie.I feel like Lottie is definitely more energetically open than the rest of the women, but [it] also feels like Lottie is feeling somewhat drawn to Callie, Desjardins tells Polygon of the pull between Callie and her moms friend.Lottie first noted that Callie seemed powerful at the end of season 2, a pronouncement that Desjardins says is absolutely fueling Callies interest in Lottie and her whole situation. That is something that Callie takes in. She has no idea what that means, but I think [] Lottie has this connection to the wilderness, and I think part of that energy is like Callie is sensing an openness in a way, Desjardins said. I really wanted to play all the aspects we have [with] Callie feeling drawn to the energy, feeling confused by the energy. With Callie like the rest of us so eager for answers about what exactly the Yellowjackets crew got up to out there, shes ready to turn to anyone who feels more open in that way, even if theyre offering her a creepy murder necklace. This seems like a much darker (and more accurate) take on the pull of Lotties cult influence than the soft matching pastels of season 2. And given that the necklace has taken on even a colloquial understanding of being marked, it seems like Callie could be in real danger.

  • Marvel movies are still using X-Men flavor without X-Men nutrition
    www.polygon.com
Marvel Studios hasnt yet announced any plans to actually give the X-Men their own Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and even if the company announced one tomorrow, the production pipeline means it wouldnt come out before 2027 or 28 at the earliest. But that certainly hasnt stopped the creative minds behind MCU movies from playing around in the borders of X-Men continuity, and Captain America: Brave New World is no exception.Brave New World not only introduces a major pillar of the X-Men setting adamantium, a metal that can cut through (almost) anything it introduces it in a way that creates a foundation for a whole subcategory of X-Men characters. Its subtle! Its deft! Its interesting! I definitely only noticed it because Im a giant nerd! And it would be great if I believed it was going anywhere.Much of Brave New Worlds plot revolves around the discovery that the Celestial corpse from Eternals, frozen mid-emergence in the middle of the Indian Ocean, is full of adamantium. The metal itself is just a name-drop in Brave New World: Its properties are never really unpacked or demonstrated. Its just described as a metal that rivals vibranium for indestructibility. Its value is that vibranium is 99% controlled by a single, isolationist, highly secure nation that isnt interested in sharing, while the motherlode of adamantium is just standing around in an awkward pose in an area of the world many nations could potentially access.Brave New World gets deeper into X-Men lore, however, in centering Japan as the face of the other nations competing with the American government to claim all that adamantium. There are any number of logical, real-world reasons Japan might play this role in this film, from basic geopolitics to more metatextual moviemaking concerns. But Japan as a country is also inextricably interwoven with X-Men continuity, particularly where Wolverine is concerned.Superhero comics are a hodgepodge of everything pop culture thinks is pretty cool, all rolled up in long-lived, interconnected universes. So suffice to say, between U.S. audiences long-standing interest in Japanese pop culture and the trappings thereof, and the personal predilections key X-Men creators like Chris Claremont and Frank Miller have for samurai- and ninja-inflected adventures, the X-Men were gonna get linked up with Japan in some way.But also, sometimes, the timing of a general media fad like the Kung Fu Craze of the 1970s and 1980s coincides with a creatively fertile period in a single genre, like X-Men comics during that same time. So thanks to the ongoing and connected nature of superhero comics, Wolverine woundup as a century-old Canadian lone wolf who nevertheless spent so much dang time in Japan that wed need a chart to keep track of his Japanese ex-girlfriends, fiances, baby mamas, and sworn enemies. And with so many Japanese characters in Marvel Comics linked up to Wolverine, Japan itself became linked up with the metal on his bones, through characters like Lady Deathstrike or Daken because one of the only things Wolverines adamantium claws cant cut through is more adamantium. After all, you can only invent a magical adamantium-stopping katana so many times. It would be nice to be able to say that this is exactly the kind of dense world-building background available for superhero adaptations to exploit, the kind that makes a world feel lived-in and real. The kind that would make us all go Aha! How clever! when the MCU eventually reveals that, thanks to Japan taking point on adamantium mining in Brave New World, it winds up with a roster of home-grown adamantium-using superheroes. But that would require Marvel Studios to do anything with the X-Men before the events of Brave New World are as diminished in its fans minds as the events of Eternals are now. At a certain point, it doesnt matter if that deft, clever, interesting foundation for future X-Men lore is followed up on, if follow-up doesnt show up.Marvel Studios will undoubtedly eventually stop making feints at putting the X-Men on screen and make a full MCU X-Men movie. But with the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Secret Wars named after a story arc thats about restarting the Marvel Universe, will todays X-Men references have anything to do with tomorrows X-Men continuity?Until Marvel sets an X-Men movie in the main continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all the X-Men winks currently piling up in Brave New World, as well as in Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Doctor Strange arent X-Men world-building at all. Its just artificial X-Men flavoring.

    www.engadget.com
We may see the M4 MacBook Air as soon as March. In the Power On newsletter this weekend, Bloombergs Mark Gurman reports that Apple is readying itself for the launch of the upgraded laptop next month. The company is preparing its marketing, sales and retail teams for the debut, according to Gurmans sources, and its letting inventory of the existing models wind down. The M4 MacBook Air is expected to come in two sizes, 13-inch and 15-inch, like the previous model.Apple introduced the M3 MacBook Air last March, and unveiled its new M4 chip a few months later, bringing that first to the iPad Pro. In October, it refreshed the iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pros with the M4 family of chips. The MacBook Air is now due for its turn. While the laptop didnt get the M4 chip in the fall, Apple did announce a long-awaited memory boost for the lineup at that time, with the M2 and M3 now starting at 16GB of RAM.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/apples-m4-macbook-air-could-be-here-in-just-a-few-weeks-153004599.html?src=rss
