SpaceX will launch its Starship megarocket for the eighth time on Friday, February 28.The news came via SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, who posted a short message on X saying simply: Starship Flight 8 flies Friday.Recommended VideosStarship Flight 8 flies Friday pic.twitter.com/CmOdg13e6K Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 24, 2025Please enable Javascript to view this contentSpaceX has yet to confirm the flights specific launch time, but just like the previous seven test missions, the 120-meter-tall rocket will lift off from the companys facility near Boca Chica, Texas. The test flight will be the first since January 16, when SpaceX managed to catch the returning first-stage Super Heavy booster using a pair of giant mechanical arms attached to the launch tower. It was the second time to achieve the feat. However, the same mission had planned to perform a controlled landing of the upper-stage Starship spacecraft in the Indian Ocean, a goal that had been achieved in previous missions. But the vehicle suffered an anomaly before burning up in spectacular fashion over the Caribbean. For the eighth flight, SpaceX will be hoping to achieve controlled landings for both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship spacecraft.NASA wants to use the Starship for crew and cargo missions to the moon and Mars. The immediate goal is to use a modified version of the Starship spacecraft to land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface in the Artemis III mission, currently scheduled for 2027. But recent reports have suggested that Musk is keen to prioritize the first crewed mission to the red planet, a goal that he has long dreamed of. In a post on X in December, Musk dismissed NASAs moon-focused Artemis program as a distraction, insisting that were going straight to Mars. With Musk emerging as a dominant force in President Trumps second term, some believe he may be trying to persuade the U.S. leader to focus on the Mars endeavor over visits to the lunar surface. Indeed, during Trumps inaugural address last month, the new president emphasized Mars without mentioning the moon, leading to speculation about Musks influence.Editors Recommendations

  • Watch one of the wackiest science experiments ever to take place in space
    www.digitaltrends.com
In what some may describe as the most important microgravity experiment ever to have taken place on the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Don Pettit has attempted to enter a pair of pants without lifting a finger by floating into them.Pettit, who is better known for his outstanding space photography than pants-based resarch, shared several videos on his social media feed over the weekend that showed him trying to answer a couple of intriguing questions regarding pants in space.Recommended VideosThe first asked: Is it possible to put on a pair of pants two legs at a time? Back on terra firma, the pull of Earths gravity means that donning a pair of pants can be a cumbersome affair, an act rarely done with grace, and which sometimes even demands a seated position, depending on your balancing skills. Please enable Javascript to view this contentIn his first video (below), Pettit is seen floating toward his pants, steadying himself before grabbing the garment, raising both his legs, and then slipping into both trouser legs at the same time. Trying this maneuver on Earth would likely result in hospitalization, but in space, in the microgravity conditions that are present on the ISS, Pettit is able to complete the task with aplomb. Two legs at a time! pic.twitter.com/EHDOkIBigA Don Pettit (@astro_Pettit) February 21, 2025A short while later, in response to requests from some of his social media followers, Pettit attempts to enter his pants in one single maneuver, hands free. Youll have to watch the footage (below) to see if he manages to achieve the feat.OK; you all asked if this was possible.. pic.twitter.com/sMmJJtQNMy Don Pettit (@astro_Pettit) February 23, 2025Pettit has been on the space station since September. For much of that time, hes been dazzling earthlings with his remarkable photography skills, sharing sublime images of Earth and beyond. Hes also taken time out to talk about his love of photography and what its like to capture images from space. Maybe hell soon offer some insight into what its like to undertake wacky science research in microgravity conditions, too.Editors Recommendations

  • My childcare secret weapon isn't a nanny. It's my children's boomer grandparents.
    www.businessinsider.com
I'm a mom of two kids under the age of 4.I rely on my kids' boomer grandparents when I need childcare. They don't always understand the way I parent, but they try hard.I'm a mom of a 4-year-old and a 7-month-old who attend day care while my husband and I work full-time. Boomer grandparents get a lot of grief for being unempathetic and aloof, but that's not the case for my family. My children's boomer grandparents are my childcare secret weapon and I couldn't be a working parent without their help.I'm not the only one, either; I see our school's office administrators helping grandparents navigate the attendance system at least once a week. I've even become friendly with some of the grandparents I see regularly at pick-up. For some millennials, grandparents are an important part of our family ecosystem. We heavily considered their proximity to us when choosing a homeWhen choosing our first home, it was important to us to have easy access to my mom and my in-laws, who are less than 30 minutes away, to ensure that our children could see their grandparents frequently. Both sets of parents are in their mid to late 70s; I had my first child at 36 and my second at 40, so their time together is precious. When my youngest first attended day care, she only went three days a week. My mom and in-laws surprised me by offering to watch her the other two days so I could work full-time without paying for full-time care. I'm sure they would have offered even if they lived further away, having them relatively close has made a huge difference. While they might not understand our new parenting systems, they try hardI'm grateful that neither my in-laws nor my mom have ever questioned modern millennial parenting values and concepts. I'm sure they are internally rolling their eyes at me when I talk about sleep hygiene, bottle schedules, and gentle parenting. But they genuinely try to stick to my schedules and notes.I've found that my part of this relationship is letting things go that aren't make-or-break; my child will be OK if someone forgets to put them in a sleep sack for a nap or if my mom makes a bottle by hand instead of using our fancy formula machine.Thankfully, none of them has ever given me long diatribes about how they did things when we were babies. This mutual respect is what keeps our relationship healthy, and I'm grateful that they're open to learning the ways we think are best for our children at this point in time, no matter how ridiculous they might seem to them.I've learned to pick my battlesAs a first-time mom suffering from postpartum anxiety, I would internally flip out, watching them feed my toddler things riddled with added sugar and salt. It's been four years since I had my first child and their first grandchild. I've now realized their time together is more important than the details. While I would prefer that my preschooler not get diet tea sweetened with stevia, her tea party is much more important than what's in her cup. They are there when we need them mostNow that both of my children are in full-time care, my mom and in-laws regularly pick them up from school to help me with scheduling issues or to give us a break from the grueling job of parenting. It can be frustrating when both sets are unavailable for holidays or sick days because they are almost always available and eager to help. These are the moments I have to catch myself and acknowledge how lucky I am to have two sets of grandparents at the ready.

  • The lonely march to early retirement: 5 days at a FIRE retreat in Bali with 50 super-savers
    www.businessinsider.com
Twenty-two hours into tropical paradise, the money nerds started getting emotional. In November, four dozen Americans and Australians converged in the spiritual heart of Bali, Indonesia, at a luxury resort filled with banana trees and the sounds of passing sheep. The crew was united by their commitment to the Financial Independence, Retire Early movement.FIRE's promise: Embark on a super-saving path to ditch corporate drudgery ahead of schedule and retire on your terms. On the first day of the retreat, we sipped on coconut water and focused on introductions. Attendees at the five-day, $1,800 retreat came largely from Big Tech, finance, and small businesses, a mix of five- and six-figure paychecks. At 22, I was the youngest person in attendance by far. The other participants ranged from 35 to nearly 60 and included both those on the path to early retirement and those who had left their jobs years ago.On the second day, people started opening up about what brought them to the island. This retreat came, like any financial product, with caveats and nondisclosures. During small-group sessions, we were instructed not to interrupt or ask follow-up questions. I agreed not to write details that might identify specific people. Outside our daily meeting room, jungle flora and koi reminded us we were far from home. Shubhangi Goel/Business Insider Inside a bamboo-paneled room with the AC blasting, wooden chairs were arranged in circles of four, so close that our knees almost touched. The organizer, a retired teacher from Texas who moved to Bali, talked about mending her relationship with an estranged parent. Then the first member of our four-member group was up.SheThe next man kept the emotional momentum going by talking about his loneliness. The third member of our quartet confessed how his obligations to his parents sometimes felt like a burden. I had rarely seen men cry, but here two did so one after the other. Last up, I thought about what troubled me, a 22-year-old with a dream job, a happy family, and good friends. I told them I was anxious that my sister's going overseas to college next year could pull us apart. I had never said that out loud.Throughout that half hour, people sobbed, patted each other's shoulders, and, like me, struggled to show their solidarity without words. The confessional set the stage for nearly a week of conversations about stocks and Excel models,After six months of writing about FIRE, I knew isolation to be one of the common downsides of retiring early. When all of your friends have a 9-to-5, nobody's around for lunch on a Tuesday. At this retreat, I saw how deeply those feelings cut through a global community that often doesn't feel like a community at all. FIRE adherents need more than a lunch buddy they're yearning for friends who won't shoot down their seemingly far-fetched plans, like retiring at 35."Any time I bring up net worth, my friends think I'm bragging," a five-figure employee with a job she hates told me over dinner. "Here I have people who are so much further than me in their journeys that I can talk about money openly." The retreat's organizer, Amy Minkley (right) retired at 44 and lives in Bali. I Putu Abel Pody Amy Minkley, the organizer who lives in Bali, said she came to appreciate the value of live, long events not just a monthly happy hour or Zoom hang in 2021 after attending her first retreat. Minkley had grappled with money issues since her parents' divorce during her childhood. She took on two jobs as a teenager to help her struggling mother."I felt like I met my tribe," she said about attending her first event. "I was so moved by the people that stayed up late with me and really counseled me through some big money scarcity issues."Over the next few years, advice from new friends she made at these Bali retreats helped her sort her aging parents' long-term care."People don't often get that vulnerable until they've been around each other for multiple days," said Minkley, who retired at 44. "There's just something so valuable to be able to have conversations about money in real life."Escaping judgmentMany outsiders associate the FIRE movement with fun-eschewing cheapskates.Early evangelists, like the blogger Mr. Money Mustache, preached about living a bare-bones life to save as much as possible, then quitting your job the second you hit a certain threshold."There's been a lot of judgment over the years," a woman who started her path to FIRE in 2017 told me. "There's a lot of people that think that it doesn't work."One American said she stopped talking about personal finance with her friends. They told her that they thought the FIRE community was a cult and that she was depriving herself."They just don't have the discipline to save and invest, so they think retiring early is impossible," the woman said."I still go out, I still travel, hell I even still drink Starbucks occasionally," she said. "It's hard to convince people that it's not about deprivation it's about deciding what you value and spending on those things."Over dinner with a Balinese fire dance and spicy Thai food, two women both serial Financial Independence retreat attendees told me their loved ones associated retiring early with laziness or lack of ambition. The retreat brought corporate quitters from four continents together. I Putu Abel Pody Others said they needed someone outside their regular circle to give them permission to take the big step, whether it be to retire, to quit, or to actually spend money. A small-business owner told me she made two of the biggest decisions in her life to start a business and to get a divorce at similar events. She credits the phone-light, nature-heavy long weekends centered on Financial Independence, or FI, that feel more like adult summer camp than a financial workshop. One woman in her 50s, who suffered from what's known in FIRE-land as "I'll resign next year" syndrome, asked a trusted person at this year's retreat to run through her finances to see whether she could retire. Back home in New York, a financial advisor had quoted her nearly $3,000 to do the same."This community is worth every penny," she said after a loud, late-night game of spoons.FI influencers and Gen Xers who had retired years ago led breakout sessions with catchy names like "Financial Independence Next Endeavor" to talk about how to retire meaningfully. The early retirees recommended creating a bank account to spend solely on experiences with friends and family. The session leader told us one of the best trips he had ever taken was last year's $20,000, 11-day cruise from Greece to Italy, with his mom and his adult daughter. His "fun bucket" helped him ditch the frugality mindset. In an exercise about how to introduce yourself without mentioning work, a "FI-curious" couple with adult children struggled to talk about themselves. They had prioritized building their business for the past several years. They didn't know who they were without work or where they would go if they decided to retire early.'Accountability buddies'On the last day, our 50-person group sat in a circle sporting a mix of loose tank tops and uneven tans. We shared one thing we promised to do to improve our lives after getting home. To keep on track, we were directed to find "accountability buddies."One woman promised to talk to her FIRE-wary partner about her desire to move abroad. A business owner broke down and confessed that her work felt like a prison so she would consider hiring help. A couple with young kids said they would prioritize their sidelined marriage though the two finance whizzes had recently hit nearly $2 million in net worth, they had never considered shelling out for household help or a full-time nanny."It's a cautionary tale," the husband said. "When the kids grow up and they leave, you look at each other and you realize you're two different people."One man, whom I had always seen laughing and surrounded by others, teared up, saying he was going to try to forge more meaningful friendships. Accountability buddies actually kept in touch. I Putu Abel Pody When I checked in with some attendees in the weeks after the retreat, they told me their accountability buddies had stayed in touch. Some, like the couple with young kids, were following through on their improvement pledge the duo had hired someone for household tasks and were trying to find an au pair.On the eve of my 23rd birthday, I'm not gunning to retire by 30. Whether I have two or four decades of work ahead of me, the long weekend of drinking the coconut water made me want to invest in meaningful connections, not just my brokerage account.I'll have my 30s and 40s to grow my career and net worth. But I need to enjoy friends and family now, while everyone is still fit and healthy. In the past three months, I have said yes to more activities and taken the initiative to plan others a new tactic, because I often waited for loved ones to show they cared by asking me first. And while I love my job as a journalist, I'm thinking more about who I am beyond it. As a kid, I dreamed of the hobbies I could pursue when I had my own time and money, untethered from school obligations. Now, I have no more excuses and my accountability buddy is waiting.

  • New source agrees on Nintendo Switch 2 release date but warns about retail leaks

New source agrees on Nintendo Switch 2 release date but warns about retail leaksGameCentralPublished February 24, 2025 1:35am June does seem to be the favourite prediction (YouTube)Theres increasing agreement over the likely release date of the Nintendo Switch 2 but apparently retailers are not to be trusted.Although the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced we still know very little about the console, with the reveal trailer explaining almost nothing. It did state a 2025 launch, but it wasnt any more specific than that.Traditionally, new consoles launch in the autumn, but spring is the second most popular choice, as it was with the March release of the original Switch.Anytime in summer is extremely rare and yet the most persistent rumour for the Switch 2s launch has been in or around June and thats also the prediction of a former member of Nintendo of Americas sales team.Speaking on the Kit and Krista podcast, Sean was convinced that Nintendo will release the Switch 2 before the end of the summer and announce the exact release date at the Nintendo Direct in April.Theyre going to want the system to be out before the end of the summer. I would say at the start of the summer, at the end of the school year, so you have kids talking about what theyre excited for, said Sean, as transcribed by VGC.I think well see a June launch. Im thinking maybe mid-June, or a little bit later than that. But definitely before the end of the summer, that things coming out there are good strategic reasons why that would be part of the consideration.Interestingly, Sean is certain that retailers know nothing, beyond a possible confirmation of which quarter it will be released in, and will be told nothing further until the last minute which makes sense as so far most retail rumours have been fairly obvious fakes.Whether Sean has any insider knowledge about the release date, or if its purely a prediction based on his experience with the company, is not entirely clear, but his comment about retailers certainly seems believable given his history.More TrendingThey dont have that information. Theres no way that even Target in the US would know anything when we know the launch date, thats probably when the retailers are going to know the launch date. Maybe a week or two in advance. I would imagine maybe March 27th the retailers will find out a couple of days in advance [of the Nintendo Direct], said Sean.Although a summer release date has been rumoured multiple times there has been no clear explanation for why Nintendo would opt for such an unusual launch time, given general video game sales in terms of both hardware and software are usually at their lowest ebb at the midpoint of the year.Theres unlikely to be one single reason for it, but it no doubt includes factors such as a lack of new releases for the Switch 1 and the Switch 2 being a portable console, suitable for taking on holiday. Many have speculated that Nintendo is also attempting to avoid the launch of GTA 6, as while the two products are very different its certain that Rockstars long-awaited sequel will soak up all the attention in and around the industry for several months and yet without a release date its impossible for Nintendo to avoid it with certainty other than via a summer launch. • Games Inbox: Is Mario better than Astro Bot?
    metro.co.uk
Astro Bot Marios new rival (Sony Interactive Entertainment)The Monday letters page gets a readers review of the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds network test, as one reader is upset about the NieR: Automata anniversary. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukDouble the pleasureI really dont think Nintendo has much to learn from Astro Bot. All the 3D Mario games sell far more than Sonys games and the only one that Astro Bot is better than is Super Mario Sunshine. For my view I think that the next game should try and make itself as different as possible to Mario, because the dj vu is the worst thing about the current game. Which is a shame, because the controls and graphics are really good.I think its great that Sony is going back to make more family friendly games, instead of just endless grimdark, and I hope they do not just try the Rare approach, of making exactly the same games as Nintendo but with better graphics thats such a waste. At the moment, theres no question that Mario games, in general, are a lot better but that could change in the future. The best thing is for Sony to try and do their own thing and beat Nintendo that way. Then Nintendo would have some decent competition for once and that would spur them on, which is good for everyone.WrexTime fliesSomeone just told me that its the eighth anniversary of NieR:Automata on Sunday and that blows my mind. I cant believe its been the best part of a decade since that game came out, I wouldve put it at four or five years at the absolute most.More bizarre to me though is that weve never heard any word about a sequel. Not even a hint that there might be another one, let alone a trailer or anything. I know Yoko Taro is an oddball but some kind of reassurance would be nice. Its now been longer since the release of NieR:Automata than the gap between the original NieR and Automata and that is just straight up crazy, considering NieR was a flop and Automata was a surprise hit that sold over 9 million copies.MoteNever-ending fadI do find your comments about old companies like Disney and Hasbro, that were around before video games were a thing, never really engaging with gaming to be interesting. Ive never really thought about it before, but it seems that rather than getting in at ground level, and using their money and experience, they just sat back and did the bare minimum, as if they expected games to be a fad which I guess they probably thought it was after the American crash in the 80s.That doesnt explain modern times though and Im not sure how Hasbro manages to publish something as bad as Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance (the new one) and Baldurs Gate 3 within just two years. Its like they have no quality control and no real idea what makes a good game, so even the hits are just accidents.Disney gives the same vibe and its a shame, but it makes me wonder what amazing games were probably canned over the years. Oh well, for the record Id love to see a new big budget Transformers.BurkeEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukBest in classJust thought Id write and say that Im still playing and enjoying Destiny 2. Even after all these years, the gunplay it still best in class and they keep trying to iterate, to slowly improve things. Arguably there are a few more bugs with the reduced QA testing, but given how cheap everything is now Id still thoroughly recommend it to gamers that havent tried it before. Im also very much looking forward to Indiana Jones And The Great Circle on the PlayStation 5 how have other readers got on with it?As an aside, Im still not convinced that its not Froms reluctance to reproduce an existing IP and not down to Sony. On the one hand weve got Miyazaki saying FromSoftware and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future I believe that FromSoftware has to create new things. and on the other err do we have anything? Im happy to be persuaded that Sony is holding it back for some reason, but Ive not seen much to evidence that.Matt (he_who_runs_away PSN ID)GC: There are three Dark Souls (the first of which also had a remaster) and six Armored Cores (which is Miyazakis pet franchise). Bloodborne hasnt had so much as a PlayStation 5 patch. The Eldest ScrollsI almost feel like The Elder Scrolls 6 is going to arrive too late at this point. Its already 14 years old but it feels much older than that to me. And itll be 17 years old by 2028, which is when most rumours seem to think its coming out. There have been later franchises than that before, but I cant think of anything where there was no reason for the delay and the previous game was super popular and everyone was excited about getting a new entry ASAP.What worries me, and its borne out by this new rumour, is that with that big a gap Bethesda are going to be tempted to make it a half-remake of Skyrim instead, with lots of similar parts in it, that were originally supposed to make it unique, like dragons. Its Star Wars syndrome where they waited too long to do something new and now just want to remind people of what they liked about the original. We cant know thats what theyre doing yet but I feel its something to be worried about even without a first look.Tony T.Generally niceIt really feels like the last six months have been brilliant for new games. Playing the Call Of Duty campaigns has been on my to do list since it came out, but its constantly getting bumped for something else. This week that something else has been Avowed, and to be honest it wasnt one I was expecting. When I saw the trailers it didnt look like something that would appeal to me. Ive never had much interest in magic or a fantasy setting, but Ive got to say, Im really enjoying it.The combats decent and I quite like the sarcastic options in all the dialogue. The worlds also a decent design with nicely hidden bits to explore while also being a generally nice setting. Two other thing I really like are the fact that the map shows you where youve been and enemys dont randomly come back to life when you revisit a place. That really bugs me in games, as it means theres no real point in engaging when you can just run past.So overall, a good game that gets my recommendation.TimTwas ever thusI find the idea of AI making games abhorrent, it will only produce on models that have gone before and make generic games year after year with little or no innovation, how has it come to this? However, I will wait with wild anticipation for the next instalment of EA Sports FC 26, Assassins Creed 14 and Call of Duty 19. Whoop whoop.SimonGC: Black Ops 6 actually counts as Call Of Duty 21. Shadows is the 14th Assassins Creed though.Super Cross KartThere was a Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds closed network test and, having applied for a code, I hope you dont mind me sharing some thoughts. The test included a generous selection of Sonic characters and tracks. The graphics didnt blow me away (some of the background animations have a low frame rate) but all the tracks were consistent with the aesthetic of the series. However, some like Wonder Museum take a disappointingly generic approach to the theme, given the vault of Sega iconography that could have been used to fill a museum environment. The CrossWorlds gimmick means the second lap is on an entirely different track (its chosen by the racer in first place, who drives through one of two portals that open). The final lap also concludes on a straight run filled with speed boosts, which can be a blessing or a curse.Overall, the game feels very chaotic. There are constantly rings and power-ups flooding the screen, which takes a few tracks to adjust to. The handling of the vehicles felt quite light, and it takes a while to gauge when to start drifting, but the controls overall were responsive and there are customisation options aplenty for further experimentation.I did find that if your vehicle hits a wall, the game seems inclined to want the vehicle to stick to the wall (which is at least consistent with how 3D Sonic often handles, I suppose). Rather than a gliding descent, the flying sections allow you to move horizontally and vertically, which adds a different dynamic that I enjoyed after a few attempts to adjust to the change.Theres a ranking system which allows you to unlock a wide range of enhancements depending on your race style (for example, one adds a level to the drift boost, another awards you rings for colliding with a rival). The test didnt allow access to the single-player mode, but the game certainly seems to be piling in reasons to encourage replayability.Overall, I enjoyed what I played of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Though not a groundbreaking racing game, its solid enough. Theres nothing about the closed test that gives any indication of the game planning to give franchises from the wider Sega universe a significant presence, so I hope to see more of that aspect in due course.Needlemouse91GC: Thank you very much for that; very interesting.Inbox also-ransAdding to the Readers Feature at the weekend, Cannon Fodder gave me the same feelings without the ability to rename. It was my first experience of permadeath and having my first troops promoted always left me with a feeling of loss when they were killed.MattI think a Batman Beyond game would be the perfect way for Rocksteady to get back into the franchise. You could have a bit of backstory to tie to Arkham but otherwise its completely new for new players. Its such a perfect idea I bet they never do it.SoapyMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
