• One option for electric vehicle fires? Let them burn.
    www.technologyreview.com
In the fall of 2024, a trucking company in Falls Township, Pennsylvania, temporarily stored a storm-damaged Tesla at its yard. A few weeks later, the car burst into flames that grew out of control within seconds, some shooting out 30 feet. A local fire company tried in vain to squelch the blaze, spraying more than 2,000 gallons of water on the vehicle. Eventually, the firefighters requested help from a fire company in neighboring Bristol Township, led by volunteer fire chief Howard McGoldrick. Hed been fighting fires since 1989, but this conflagration was unusual: It was a chemical fire in a lithium-ion battery, meaning it provided its own heat, fuel, and oxygen. And it was incredibly challenging to extinguish. McGoldrick was encountering fires like this more and more often. The previous year, he says, several rowhouses were badly burned after overcharged lithium-ion batteries in racing drones ignited inside. In another nearby incident, old lithium-ion biomedical devices at a scrapyard got soaked in a rainstorm and combusted. The Tesla fire felt like a breaking point. We were like, Okay, this is just too many incidents in a short amount of time, McGoldrick recalls. He went in search of someone who could help his company get better at responding to fires in lithium-ion batteries. He found Patrick Durham. Durham is the owner of (and mustache behind) StacheD Training, one of a growing number of private companies helping first responders learn how to deal with lithium-ion battery safety, including electric-vehicle fires. Although there isnt solid data on the frequency of EV battery fires, its no secret to EV makers that these fires are happening. Yet the manufacturers offer no standardized steps on how to fight them or avoid them in the first place, leaving first responders scrambling to search through each cars emergency response guidesomething thats hard to do when youre standing in front of an immolating vehicle. In this void, Durham offers a wealth of resources to first responders, from easy-to-follow video tutorials to hours-long in-person workshops. In 2024 alone, Durham says he trained approximately 2,000 first responders around the country. As more people buy EVs, in part to help address climate change, the need for this training has only grown; in less than two years, Durhams YouTube channel has attracted almost 30,000 subscribers. (The US doesnt currently collect data on the frequency or causes of EV fires, but this year the US Fire Administration and the Fire Safety Research Institute are rolling out a new data collection system for fire departments.) A circumspect man with a shaved head, brown eyes, and a thick horseshoe mustache framing his mouth, Durham previously worked as a mechanical engineer developing battery boxes for EVs. He is also a volunteer firefighter, and in 2020 he offered his first training on fires in lithium-ion batteries to his local department. From there, his reputation spread by word of mouth. Today, StacheD Training is Durhams full-time work. Hes also the captain of his local volunteer fire department in Troy, Michigan. As more EVs hit the road, what worries Durham most isnt just the growing likelihood of battery firesits their intensity. The severity of the fire is significant compared to a regular vehicle fire, he says. The traditional car fires that you and I grew up withthe majority of those always start in the engine compartment, says Jim Stevenson, a fire chief from rural Michigan who has taken Durhams training. So we basically get there, we pop the car hood, and then we put out the fire from there, and if it gets into the inner compartment of the car? Not a big deal. You spray it down with the hose, and its out in no time. With EV fires, Stevenson says, its just a completely different monster. SHAWN HAZEN An EV battery is essentially a tightly packed array of thousands of cells, each of which ranges from approximately the size and shape of an AA battery to the size of a legal envelope, depending on the battery model. If a single cell gets damagedsuch as by getting crushed, overcharged, or waterloggedthat cell can heat uncontrollably in a process called thermal runaway. It will release so much heat and flammable gas that it generates its own fire, which spreads to the other cells. Older lithium-ion battery packs exploded like a pipe bomb when that happened, Durham says; todays battery packs have release valves so that during thermal runaway they avoid an explosion by instead spewing flames in what Durham describes as essentially a blowtorch. The location of an EVs batteryunderneath the car, between its axles, within a protective casecomplicates things further. The batteries are much safer from collision damage than they would be under the hood, but they are also much harder to reach and douse if they ignite. The result? Fires such as one at an Illinois Rivian plant in 2024, where one EV caught fire and approximately 50 cars parked nearby ended up burning. Or one in Hollywood, Florida, in 2023, where a Tesla was accidentally driven off a dock and burst into flames even though it was underwater. Durham worries that if an EV battery catches fire in a high-speed crash, it will burn so intensely that first responders wont be able to save anyone inside the vehicle. Putting out a fire in an internal-combustion car might take as little as 30 minutes and a few hundred gallons of water, he notes, while an electric car battery fire could take upwards of 4,000 gallons of water and many hours to extinguishand much more for commercial trucks. Indeed, when a Tesla Semi drove off Interstate 80 in Northern California in 2024 and burst into flames, first responders had to douse it with 50,000 gallons of water and close the highway for 15 hours. Whats more, with EVs, its never entirely clear whether the fire is truly out. Cars may ignite, or reignite, weeks or even months after the battery is damaged or a battery fire is initially suppressed. Durham points to one salvaged Tesla in California that burst into flames 308 days after it had flooded in a Florida hurricane. The vehicle hadnt initially ignited, but saltwater intrusion into the battery pack eventually corroded it enough to produce a chemical fire leading to thermal runaway. According to Durham, the simple truth is that the best way to manage EV fires right now is to let them burnwhile making sure to protect the surrounding area, including other vehicles and peoples homes. Allowing the fire to run its course will ideally also destroy any cells that might otherwise ignite later. This goes against firefighters instincts. When they respond to EV fires, they will spray water because they want to do something to fix the problem, he says. [But] its not really doing anything. Stevenson worries about how bystanders will perceive first responders waiting out a blaze. Its going to be ugly, he says, because the publics going to see us standing on the side [of the] road just watching it burn, which looks bad for us. But at the same time, he adds, we dont have [an] actual way of getting to the battery to knock it out. For now, Durhams training focuses on the options that first responders do have with EV fires. An important if simple one is using a fire blanket to cover a vehicle and prevent the blaze from spreading as it burns out. Although they hadnt yet received Durhams training, thats exactly what McGoldrick and his crew did when they responded to the burning Tesla last fall: After the facility used a forklift to move the burning car to an isolated part of the yard, first responders covered it with a fire blanket. The car reignited several times over the next few days, McGoldrick says, but it was contained. We just put it in the middle of an open lot and basically let it go. Its a significant cultural shift that first responders need to make, Durham says, and theres another one, too: being extra-vigilant about the personal protective equipment they wear from the first moment they arrive at a burning EV. There isnt yet enough information to compare the toxicity of EV fires and those in gas-powered cars, but Durham warns that first responders could inhale high levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and heavy metals from burning EVs. Overall, Durham says, he is not against EVs, but he thinks there needs to be a change in attitude to handle them safely. When an EV battery catches fire, he says, until that battery has been removed from the vehicle and shredded and fully recycled, its always going be a hazard. Maya L. • A healthy aging scientist who has met hundreds of centenarians shares 4 things she does to live longer
    www.businessinsider.com
Stacy Anderson, a scientist, has studied how centenarians live for over 20 years. She believes lifestyle factors such as diet play a big role in how long a person might live. She eats plenty of fruits and vegetables and gets eight hours of sleep each night.A scientist who has studied centenarians for over 20 years shared four things she does to live a long, healthy life.Stacy Andersen, a behavioral neuroscientist at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, is the co-director of the New England Centenarian Study, which examines the lives of people over 100 who are in good health. She has traveled the country visiting centenarians in their homes, meeting their families, and often sitting down with them for breakfast to try to pinpoint why they have lived so long."We're not trying to get everyone to live to 100. We're trying to get everyone to live like a centenarian. So really, to have that extended healthspan," Andersen told Business Insider, using the term for how long a person is healthy.Living to an extreme age, like 105 and over, is likely about 70% down to a person's genetics, Andersen said, but healthy habits appear to be the most important factor for living to our late 80s and early 90s.There's no one recipe for longevity, Andersen said, but following "the good, healthy behaviors that we know about and that are well tested" is the best approach to healthy aging. She shared the habits she's implemented into her life based on her research and meeting hundreds of centenarians.1) Eat five different colors a day You can get a diverse range of nutrients by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. istetiana/Getty Images Andersen tries to eat five different colors of fruits and vegetables every day to ensure she gets a range of nutrients. "You're getting a wider variety, and it just feels good to check that box each day," she said.Prioritizing fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and lean meats is crucial for healthy aging, she said and pointed to the Mediterranean-style diet as an example.Based on the eating patterns of people in countries like Italy, Greece, and Turkey, the Mediterranean Diet has been ranked the healthiest way to eat for eight years running by US News & World Report.A large 2023 study found that people who ate a whole-food-rich diet, similar to the Mediterranean Diet, lived up to a decade longer than those who ate a typical Western diet.2) Exercise daily and mix it upAnderson aims to get some movement in every day. She mixes up her workouts, sometimes going on long hikes with her dog, and other times running on a treadmill.A typical centenarian is active, Andersen said. Many live on their own into their 90s, they often drive for an average of 10 years longer than their peers, and work for five years longer, she said. The most common workout the centenarians she has studied do is walking or stretching, but they also do a lot of informal exercise, such as housekeeping, gardening, and yard work. The link between longevity and an active lifestyle is well-established. A 2023 study by researchers at the University of Cambridge found a link between exercising for 11 minutes a day and a lower risk of dying from chronic illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.3) Get good-quality sleep Sleep is like a "power cleanse" for the brain, Stacy Andersen said. Maria Korneeva/Getty Images Andersen prioritizes consistently getting eight hours of high-quality sleep.Current guidance on sleep tends to emphasize getting seven to nine hours, but some emerging science suggests sticking to a consistent sleep schedule could matter more.Everyone is different and feeling refreshed when you wake up is more important than the number of hours you sleep, she said."It's kind of when you feel like you're waking up ready to start the day," Andersen added. When we sleep, it's like a "power cleanse for our brain," she said. It helps remove the proteins that are thought to to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.4) Challenge yourself to learn a new skillAndersen has taken up sailing, which she said challenges her both cognitively and physically. "I tell everyone, 'Whatever you've always wanted to do that's new, go and do that!'" she said. Several centenarians she has met took up painting in their later years, for example.Doing something that engages your brain and attention strengthens neural pathways and builds new ones, and is the number one thing we can do for brain health, she said. "Just doing crossword puzzles where you're retrieving information is probably not going to be that beneficial," she said.A 2021 study published in the journal PLOS One by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, found that after just one week of intensive language learning, a group of 33 participants, aged between 18 and 78, had improved their ability to focus and switch between tasks. A control group of 34 participants who did an intensive course that didn't involve language learning also experienced cognitive benefits, but they weren't quite as significant, the authors said.

  • DOGE, please go to sleep. For your health.
    www.vox.com
Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) underlings are powering his takeover of the government with a hardcore work ethic that sacrifices sleeping for around-the-clock grinding. Musk boasted that they are working long hours, even over weekends because their opponents take that time off. They moved sofa beds into the Office of Personnel Management and other government agencies. One seller of trendy sleep pods generously sent their product to Musk and his team, hoping to help them catch some precious zzzs.It is an old-school Silicon Valley mentality, which values an absolute time commitment above everything else. The image of Musk hunkering down in a federal office building evokes the tales of him sleeping on the Tesla factory floor. The hustle culture of Silicon Valley is replete with these legends of company founders and their minions sleeping at their desks for days on end trying to crack an important problem on their way to glory. This is a culture that has sought for years to hack sleep something they view as a woeful inefficiency by, for example, the practice of breaking sleep into bite-sized portions throughout the day rather than one big chunk at night. Some House Republicans have suggested that Capitol Hill, the entire federal government, and the country in general have something to learn from this zealous work ethic. The pandemic-driven heyday of remote work is over; corporate executives across different industries are increasingly pushing workers to recommit to coming to the office and generally prioritizing work above all else, a more Muskian ethos. But the fetishization of this hardcore, no-sleep mentality chafes against what the vast majority of research advises: We need more sleep not less. The modern world makes it hard to get a good nights rest. A lack of quality sleep affects not only our short-term cognitive and physical capabilities, but also the longer-term prognosis for deadly diseases like heart disease and cancer. The medical research here is clear: We are not better off subsisting on five or six hours of sleep while we grind away we need more. The challenge is figuring out how to get those eight hours, no matter whether you are overhauling the federal bureaucracy or just trying to be your best self. Why our brains need sleepThe modern eight-hour standard took shape in parallel to the Industrial Revolution, when more people started working clearly delineated schedules, i.e., the famous 9-to-5 shift. Electricity also became more common, untethering people from the sleep schedule that had been dictated by natural light. Medical professionals began to recognize the value of a long, consistent sleep. More recent research has added some nuance, indicating that some people get enough rest from seven hours of sleep and others may need more like nine because of natural genetic differences. But the standard had been set. And that naturally left an emerging group of sleep scientists wondering what happened if people did not get enough rest.William Dement started recording brain patterns during sleep in the 1950s, unlocking the approach that has allowed researchers to see the changes in brain activity that could explain why sleep and its absence had different effects. He attended an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most time spent without sleep in the early 1960s (it was for 11 days). As the head of the first professional medical society dedicated to sleep science, he oversaw foundational studies that evaluated sleep deprivation and the behavioral changes that it caused.Dement helped to identify REM sleep patterns and their value, as well as sleep apnea, or periods of interrupted breathing that can disrupt sleep. He and other scientists began to document that people who were sleep deprived would slip into what later became called microsleeps brief periods of unintentional sleeping that contribute to workplace accidents and errors. Here in the 21st century, researchers have discovered the biological mechanisms that could explain these effects. Studies have shown that lack of sleep causes reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex (which is responsible for decision-making) and the hippocampus (where our memories are stored). One small study of novice software engineers found their coding suffered with less sleep. A physician who ran a mobile clinic for tech workers told Fortune that he had found many of his patients had biological ages decades beyond their actual age, which could be linked to the grind lifestyle.People who dont get enough sleep are also worse at controlling their emotions, have worse moods, and are less capable of relating to others, according to research published over the past decade. Neurological exams have found that there is increased activity in the amygdala (which processes emotion) when people are sleep deprived. The rest of your body also needs the rest. Medical researchers have linked heart disease to insufficient sleep. When I interviewed oncologists last year to hear their best hypotheses about why more young people are developing cancers, several of them cited lack of sleep as a risk factor that needed to be better understood. In general, we already know a lack of sleep makes our immune system less efficient. You need your sleep!Elon Musk himself acknowledged that those infamous sleep habits werent good for him and said he was trying to get more like six hours a night these days because his old routine gave him brain pain. Unfortunately, his reported use of drugs, including ketamine, which is associated with bad sleep, and his tweeting patterns give us reason to doubt he is suddenly getting more sleep. The grind continues, now in DC.For a crew that boasts about their sleep schedules, its fair to wonder if thats having an impact. DOGEs 120-hour work week literally does not leave enough time for eight hours of sleep. Whether its incompetence, fatigue, or something more nefarious, other outlets have already reported sloppy operational security, the inadvertent disclosure of classified information, and the firing then quick rehiring of critical government staff who were working on issues as important as nuclear safety and the bird flu crisis. In one laughable case, DOGE claimed to have saved $8 billion for the American taxpayer when they had actually saved $8 million all because of what should have been an easily caught mathematical error. The DOGE crew is seemingly stacking the deck for further risks to ensue. The latest? The Trump administration is laying off thousands of IRS workers right as tax season kicks into gear.Bringing a bunch of sleep pods into the White House was, in a way, an admission that a long uninterrupted sleep cannot be hacked. Think of the name of the AI-powered sleep pod company Eight Sleep that provided $4,600 beds to Musk and his team. Eight hours of sleep is still the goal. Mark Zuckerberg and life hacker extraordinaire Bryan Johnson are also fans of those pods. Jeff Bezos, who has also nudged closer to this inner circle of Trump tech bros, has long advocated for good sleep as an important ingredient to success. Its telling that this culture that once thought it could take a shortcut around a full nights sleep is evolving instead to simply try to achieve those eight hours as efficiently as possible. And these pods have also, I should note, received a rave review from my colleagues at the Verge: Smart sleep is worth the cost. Because sleep is really that valuable. Its harder than ever now to get those eight hours on our own, which is the problem the pods are trying to solve. The light pollution from our devices makes us sleep worse; that artificial light disrupts our circadian rhythms. The doomscrolling we tend to do on those devices is also bad for our sleep. What a surprise. That is not to say we all need to buy a $4,600 bed, though. There are simpler steps you can take to achieve a better nights rest. Develop a set routine which should include putting your device away well before you try to close your eyes. Dont eat or drink too much before bed and definitely avoid any stimulants. Weve even got tips on buying a mattress here at Vox. And recently, Jonquilyn Hill spoke with Jade Wu, a sleep psychologist, on the Explain It To Me podcast. Wu emphasized in particular committing to a set routine as being important to getting quality sleep and, in the morning, trying to expose yourself to lots of light to start your circadian clock.People of all ages should also be mindful of sleep apnea and check with their doctor if they have any risk factors or other reasons to suspect apnea is disrupting their rest. Your wearable might even be approved to track whether you are showing signs of apnea. Companies are developing less and less intrusive devices to manage that condition and reduce both the long- and short-term risks that it presents.See More:

  • Elon Musks worldview is eerily similar to his authoritarian grandads
    www.vox.com
Elon Musk might be the most powerful man in America. Donald Trump has put his patron in charge of the federal bureaucracy, allowing Musk to tailor the administrative state to his whims, which are far-reaching and almost certainly unconstitutional. The tech mogul has shuttered a government agency in defiance of Congresss will, orchestrated mass layoffs at myriad other bureaus, and threatened to cancel payments that he deems illegitimate. Musk lacks Trumps official powers, of course. But his vast wealth and the primary challengers it could fund strikes fear into the hearts of Republican lawmakers, and threatens to upend key state-level elections. Meanwhile, through his control of X, Musk is driving news cycles in nations the world-over. All this invites the question: What motivates Musks pursuit of personal power, and his apparent contempt for constitutional constraints upon it?On some level, this query is unanswerable (no one can know with certainty what motivates Musk, not even Musk). On another, the answer may seem straightforward (Musk is not shy about broadcasting his grandiose ambitions to colonize Mars, save America from the woke mind virus etc.).But as Ive been forced to contemplate Musks worldview in recent weeks, Ive found myself thinking a lot about another man who despised social justice movements, evinced disdain for liberal democracy, and dreamed of reorganizing government with a cabal of likeminded, tech-savvy elites: Joshua N. Haldeman, a prominent 20th-century chiropractor, aviator, politician, conspiracy theorist and anti-Semite who was also Musks maternal grandfather.Haldemans belief system shifted markedly over the course of his life. But throughout his political evolution, he gravitated toward a few core premises a set of hateful and anti-democratic ideas that bear a striking (and disconcerting) resemblance to those of his grandson. In saying this, I do not mean to assert that Musks views are identical to Haldemans, nor even that the billionaires ideology was necessarily influenced by that of his grandfather. Such influence is conceivable: Although Haldeman died when Musk was a child, he has spoken reverentially of his grandfather and was close with his maternal grandmother, Winnifred Haldeman. And Musks father has suggested that she shared some of her husbands extremist views. This said, theres no direct evidence that Musk ever took an interest in his grandfathers politics. Nevertheless, I think the similarities between Musks political ideas and his grandfathers are worth noting, if only because they illustrate the timeless appeal an enduring dangers of their peculiar brand of conspiratorial elitism.Musks grandfather once wanted to replace democratic government with a benevolent dictatorship of engineersToward the tail end of the Great Depression, Haldeman joined a radical and radically strange political movement called Technocracy Incorporated. The brainchild of the eminent engineer Howard Scott, Technocracy Incorporated argued that both democracy and market capitalism has grown obsolete. As the group explained in its 1939 pamphlet, Technocracy in Plain Terms, a citizens vote has positively no effect on the actual operation of the country, for the country is not run by politicians anyway. Yet in the name of this fraudulent democracy, society was allowing incompetent politicians to grossly mismanage the economy. Meanwhile, capitalism had been rendered inoperative by its own development. Technology was rapidly condemning workers to permanent unemployment and rendering businesses unprofitable by exponentially increasing productivity and output. At one point, Scott warned that computers were soon going to do away with your accountants and your engineers, and it is also going to do away with your executives, as well as the blue collar and the white collar. Neither the electorate nor the price system was fit to govern economic life in this new world. Together, they were propelling humanity toward catastrophe. And yet, the Technocrats argued, if we simply entrusted governance to a small group of tech-savvy elites led by the Great Engineer the people of North America could immediately know untold abundance, while working only part-time and retiring by age 46. Scotts organization married this utopian economic vision to bizarre internal aesthetics and practices, reminiscent of both futuristic fiction and contemporary fascism. Members of Technocracy Incorporated wore identical gray uniforms, drove gray cars, and saluted each other as though fellow soldiers. They also referred to one another by number instead of name (one went by 1x1809x56). Haldeman, a man of science fascinated by novel technologies, took to Technocracy enthusiastically, adopting the moniker 10450-1, and quickly becoming the leader of the organizations Canadian branch (Musks decision to name one of his children X A-12 is reminiscent of Technocracys practices). In 1940, he warned his fellow technocrats that the smashup of society was imminent and that all must prepare for the New Social Order. As World War II drew to a close, however, Haldeman abandoned Technocracy for a similar but distinct and decidedly more hateful political party. In the 1940s, Haldeman embraced a more anti-Semitic brand of technocracyThe Social Credit Party shared many of Technocracy Incorporateds defining characteristics. Both were founded by engineers who wished to revolutionize government amid the ravages of the Great Depression. Both argued that technological progress had made shared prosperity possible, if only experts were given more sovereignty over the economy. And both contended that representative democracy was hopelessly corrupt and dysfunctional. In the estimation of Social Credits founder, C.H. Douglas, voters werent competent to make judgments about economic policy, and so authority over such matters needed to be transferred to the experts who actually ran productive enterprises, whether government agencies or private businesses. Elected officials would hold these experts accountable for delivering results, but only after giving them free reign to maximize output as they saw fit. This made Social Credits brand of expert-rule a bit less authoritarian than Technocracy Incorporateds. Yet the former partys indictment of conventional democracy was markedly more fascistic. To Social Credit, the problem with traditional republican government wasnt merely that voters lacked elite engineers and managers tech savvy and expertise, but rather, that the publics ignorance enabled international Jewish finance to dominate government through its control of the bureaucracy. The Jew has no native culture and always aims at power without responsibility, Douglas explained in Social Credits magazine in 1939. He is the parasite upon, and corrupter of, every civilisation in which he has attained power. Only Social Credits novel system of government could save Christian civilization from the Jewish bankers plot and deliver economic utopia. For Musks grandfather, Social Credits virulent anti-Semitism seems to have been a feature not a bug. Haldeman became the head of Saskatchewans Social Credit Party in 1945, and ascended to its national chair a year later. In 1946, the partys Quebec branch received widespread criticism for publishing excerpts of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a forged document purporting to detail a Jewish conspiracy for world domination. As Joshua Benton reported in The Atlantic, Haldeman swiftly rallied to his partys defense. In a series of letters to a Saskatchewan newspaper, Musks grandfather argued that whether The Protocols were a forgery was beside the point since the plan as outlined in these protocols has been rapidly unfolding in the period of observation of this generation. Haldeman ran for both provincial and federal offices under the Social Credit banner and lost every election in a landslide. By 1949, he resigned from the partys leadership. Within a year, he would fall in love with a different utopian political project, one that had just managed to actually secure state power South African apartheid. How Elon Musks Canadian grandfather fell in love with South African white supremacyIn 1949, Haldeman had a conversation with an Anglican minister in Toronto that would change the course of his life. In Haldemans own account, that holy man persuaded him that South Africa would become the leader of white civilization in the World.Musks grandfather evidently decided that he wished to be a part of that glorious project. Haldeman moved his family to Pretoria in 1950, the same year that South Africas government required all residents to register their race with the state and segregated urban housing. Shortly thereafter, in a letter to a Canadian newspaper, Haldeman made his enthusiasm for apartheid plain. He wrote that Black South Africans were quite clever in a routine job, but the best of them cannot assume responsibility and will abuse authority, and The present government of South Africa knows how to handle the native question. They are endeavoring to make the natives as independent and self-supporting as possible. In Haldemans assessment, talk of a native uprising in Africa is purely Communist wishful thinking.A decade later, in the face of just such an uprising, Haldemans defense of apartheid grew more conspiratorial. In response to growing international condemnation of the apartheid regime, he penned a short tract entitled, The International Conspiracy to Establish a World Dictatorship and the Menace to South Africa. As the New Yorkers Jill Lepore has documented, that booklet read in part, Every day the brain-washers repeat and emphasize the things they want us to believe. As examples The Natives are ill-treated, underpaid, underprivileged, separate development is wrong, apartheid is un-Christian.For Haldeman, the brainwashers consisted of a cabal of Jewish bankers, intellectuals, and philanthropies, which were puppet-mastering the uprisings in South Africa and plotting an outside invasion by hordes of Coloured people. Absent the agitations of this international conspiracy, Black South Africans would be well-reconciled to apartheid, Haldeman argued, because they had heretofore recognized that the white minority was more competent at managing the economy and facilitating innovation. The facts of history show that the White man has always developed the country he inhabits to the benefit of all concerned, he wrote, while the Black people of Africa have been in close contact with civilization from the earliest times but, on their own, built nothing and discovered nothing, not even the wheel. How Elon Musks political ideas resemble his grandfathersHaldemans politics clearly evolved over time. But there are a few core premises that Technocracy Incorporated, The Social Credit Party, and his brand of pro-Apartheid evangelism held in common. All three:deemed conventional democracy hopelessly corrupt and defective (Social Credit and Haldemans pro-apartheid tracts both attributed democracys woes specifically to the ignorance of the masses and malevolence of the Jewish financers who manipulated them); insisted that power should be concentrated in the hands of an intellectually superior minority (master engineers, scientific experts, and businessmen in the case of Technocracy and Social Credit, white South Africans in the case of Apartheid evangelists), on the grounds that this elite was best qualified to deliver economic progress;and believed that the stakes of allowing this elite to rule were extraordinarily high: If governance were entrusted to conventional democracy, then either economic ruin (in the vision of Technocracy Incorporated and Social Credit) or the collapse of white Christian civilization and establishment of a world dictatorship (in the view of Haldemans pro-apartheid tract) would follow. By contrast, in all three belief systems, the sustained leadership of the intellectual elite promised to deliver awe-inspiring economic progress, if not utopia.I believe that Musks recent words and deeds reflect all three of these thought patterns. To be sure, now that Musk has assumed extraordinary authority over government through the electoral process, he regularly proclaims his commitment to democracy. But before the 2024 elections outcome was certain, he repeatedly suggested that the machinations of Jewish financiers and the mass immigration of credulous illegals were on the cusp of rendering American democracy irrevocably corrupt and dysfunctional. The Dems have imported massive numbers of illegals to swing states, Musk posted on X in October. Their STATED plan is to give them citizenship as soon as possible, turning all swing states Dem. America would then become a one-party, deep blue socialist state. In other remarks, Musk has described the conspiracy against America in terms evocative of his grandfathers warnings about the plot against South Africa. In November 2023, an X user lamented that Jewish communities had been pushing hatred against whites, and flooding Western countries with hordes of minorities. Musk replied, You have said the actual truth.Musk described this post as a mistake. Yet it is of a piece with other statements that he has refused to disavow. Earlier in 2023, Musk likened the Jewish financier and Democratic donor George Soros to the X-Men supervillain Magneto, declaring that Soros hates humanity.Musk proceeded to justify this claim by asking, Does the public realize that Soros wants open borders? an apparent reference to the far-right conspiracy theory that Soros seeks to replace Americas white majority with masses of easily manipulated nonwhite immigrants. It seems clear then that Musks anxieties about democracys vulnerabilities to conniving financiers and credulous, nonwhite hordes resemble those of his grandfather. Whether he shares the younger Haldemans enthusiasm for technocracy is less obvious. Certainly, in his present role, Musk portrays himself as fighting to take power away from the administrative elite, and return it to the people.Yet in actual practice, Musk has claimed for himself and his small-team of expert coders the authority to override or subvert laws duly passed by the peoples representatives. Musks so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has sought to fire civil servants, block spending, dissolve government agencies, and bribe federal workers into resigning, all in defiance of Congresss will.Further, Musks downsizing of federal agencies threatens to transfer power away from a democratically accountable government and toward private sector firms run by tech-savvy elites, on an autocratic basis. After the Federal Aviation Administration laid off workers responsible for air safety this month, the government announced that Musks SpaceX rocket company would be helping the administration envision a new and improved air traffic control system. And Musk is emphatic that increasing the authority of both DOGE and his personal companies would bring extraordinary technological progress while limiting the power of his genius engineers, or allowing his political opponents to win democratic elections would mean national bankruptcy and the end of civilization, if not of humanity itself. As Musk put the point in September, The Department of Government Efficiency is the only path to extending life beyond Earth. It is not hard to get from these premises to the conclusion that ensuring the power of Musk and similarly brilliant elites is more important than democracy or the rule of law. Judging by Musks actions, he may have already reached that determination.Musks ideas arent the same as his grandfathers, but they present similar dangersNone of this is to say that Musk shares all of his grandfathers beliefs. For all of his outbursts and illiberal actions, he has never forthrightly endorsed white supremacy or authoritarian rule, as Haldeman did. One reason for doubting that Musk inherited his penchant for right-wing authoritarianism is that he came by his extremism only recently. A decade ago, Musk was, by his own account, a moderate Democrat. Its plausible that, like so many other Americans, he was simply radicalized by the combination of Covid, culture wars, and social media addiction. Yet the overlap between Musks current outlook and his grandfathers is notable, even if the latter did not shape the former. Either way, the similarities indicate that, across generations, a certain kind of man - intellectually gifted, tech-savvy, and maniacally ambitious can be vulnerable to hateful and authoritarian ideas. Democracys flaws are real. And it is easy for self-assured, technically proficient elites to look at those flaws and then at humanitys unrealized technological potential and conclude that their society could achieve utopia, if only people like themselves were liberated from the tyranny of the credulous masses (and the bad elites who manipulate them). But Haldemans example illustrates the folly of such thinking. In reality, elites who seek authoritarian power are rarely as competent as they claim, or believe themselves to be. Scott, the genius engineer who wished to bring Technocracy to America, was in actuality not a brilliant scientist, so much as a serial fabulist. Douglas, the founder of Social Credit, also seems to have fabricated his sterling professional credentials. Meanwhile, the apartheid governments claim that it governed in the interests of all residents and that Black South Africans welcomed their subjugation is now almost universally recognized as an abominable lie.Musk is doubtlessly a gifted business executive. But his purported expertise about the federal bureaucracy, and how to increase its efficiency, is utterly fraudulent. And the hazards of concentrating power in the hands of an arrogant pseudo-expert are increasingly apparent; in recent days, DOGE has accidentally fired (and then hastily attempted to rehire) workers responsible for ensuring the safety of Americas skies, nuclear weapons, and food. Few would defend Joshua Haldemans political ideas today. With any luck, his grandsons will be similarly disdained in the future.See More:

  • Assassins Creed Shadows details leak as physical copies launch early
    metro.co.uk
Not quite in the shadows anymore (Ubisoft)Ubisofts cursed journey with Assassins Creed Shadows has taken another sour turn, as the game leaks a month before its official launch.Assassins Creed Shadows might be answering the prayers of fans who have longed for an entry set in Japan, but the game hasnt exactly been a smooth ride for Ubisoft so far. The sequel has faced controversy around its chosen protagonists, particularly African samurai Yasuke, which led to a bizarre non-apology from Ubisoft. Beyond vague claims of historical inaccuracy, the game has been delayed several times, just when Ubisoft desperately needs a big hit. Now, a month ahead of its scheduled launch on March 20, copies of Assassins Creed Shadows have made their way into the wild. The first rumbles of a leak were noted by Assassins Creed YouTuber The Hidden One, who claimed in a video that he knew someone with access to the game because the PlayStation Store had made a mistake. While its unclear whether there was a hiccup which led to accidental digital sales on the PlayStation Store, X user DannyStevens_, who has since deleted his account, later posted screenshots of a physical PlayStation 5 copy along with the installation screen. As reported by TheGamer, the user claims to have purchased the game through the Facebook Marketplace. While its unclear what the original source of the leak is, it seems it isnt limited to one individual, with now-deleted listings for the game also popping up on other sites like Mercari. Weve spotted archived streams of Assassins Creed Shadows on Twitch too, which are still up at the time of writing.A bunch of gameplay videos and details have since circulated on Reddit, from those who claim to have a copy, so its probably wise to mute some keywords if youre hoping to go unspoiled over the next month.More TrendingFor those who dont mind a few spoilers, theres a list of alleged details here although to be honest theyre nothing astounding. Its claimed these copies are an older build of Assassins Creed Shadows, which makes sense if many of the promised improvements, following the delays, are part of the inevitable day one patch. For those worried about any further delays, Ubisoft recently reaffirmed the game is on track to come out on March 20 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.This isnt the first leak Assassins Creed Shadows has been subjected to either, after the games DLC expansion, The Claws Of Awaji, was outed on Steam earlier this year. • ELEMENTAL Designs Prefabricated Housing Project for Reconstruction in Via del Mar, Chile
    www.archdaily.com
ELEMENTAL Designs Prefabricated Housing Project for Reconstruction in Via del Mar, ChileSave this picture!Courtesy of ELEMENTALA year after the Via del Mar mega-fire in Chile and with reconstruction efforts progressing at just 26%, the architecture firm ELEMENTAL and local authorities have begun construction on a prefabricated housing project in one of the residential neighborhoods most affected by the disaster. The project consists of a mid-density residential building with a modular steel structure, intended as a starting point for similar initiatives in response to what is now considered one of the most catastrophic events in Chile's recent history. As stated by Alejandro Aravena and the city's mayor, Macarena Ripamonti, the goal is for the technology and management model behind this project to set a precedent for delivering rapid and permanent housing solutions in emergency situations.Save this picture! The Via del Mar mega-fire broke out on February 2, 2024, and remained active for two days. During that time, it spread across approximately 9.5 hectares in one of Chile's most densely populated regions, affecting the cities of Via del Mar, Quilpu, Villa Alemana, and Limache (neighboring towns north of the well-known port of Valparaso). The fire resulted in the deaths of 132 people and the destruction of around 5,500 homes, as well as industries, services, and emblematic public spaces such as the Botanical Garden. The project designed by ELEMENTAL, the firm led by Pritzker-winning architect Alejandro Aravena, is located in El Olivar, one of the residential neighborhoods most severely impacted by the fire.Save this picture!Save this picture! The site for this public-private "pilot project" was selected and evaluated by municipal authorities in collaboration with regional universities. The building designed by ELEMENTAL includes four 63m apartments, built using a total of 8 prefabricated modules and 3 industrialized roof modules. These modules, constructed with a steel frame, composite slabs, and galvanized steel profile walls, are manufactured within a month. They are then transported by truck and assembled on-site in a single day, followed by five days of finishing work under optimal conditions. Related Article Debunking the Myth that Prefabricated Structures are Rigid and Unattractive The installation of the modules began on January 21, 2025, and is now in its final stages. By 10 PM on the same day, the first module was placed on-site, and the building's structure was completed with the installation of the roof. The design features one apartment per floor, providing housing for four families whose previous homes were single-story houses with yards. From an architectural perspective, the project represents a shift not only in construction technology but also in housing typology. The implementation of this prototype has a total cost of 223 million Chilean pesos (approximately 220,000 USD), financed in this first version by Chile's Ministry of Finance.Save this picture!According to Alejandro Aravena, the use of prefabrication and rapid assembly technology addresses a key challenge in emergency scenarios: speed. In Chile, the response to emergencies caused by natural phenomena is mostly managed and financed by the central government, located in the city of Santiago. Given that the country extends 4,270 km in length, encompassing three geographic zones and a wide range of climates, centralizing resources and decision-making presents a significant challenge for emergency housing construction. The Municipality of Via del Mar sees this project as an opportunity to explore local responses to housing needs. This pilot project, named "Pequeos Condominios" (Small Condominiums) by the municipality, is envisioned as the first of many, aiming to secure additional funding for future units.Save this picture!Save this picture!Modular housing emerges here as a viable alternative for construction in Latin America. As a collective initiative that acknowledges regional variations, prefabricated housing, so far more common in second homes, can be approached as an effective solution to some of the contemporary challenges facing the construction industry. In terms of design, regional practices such as iHouse Estudio in Uruguay, SET Ideas and Estudio Borrachia in Argentina, and Ensamble de Arquitectura Integral in Colombia, demonstrate that modular construction can offer efficiency without necessarily compromising architectural identity.Image gallerySee allShow lessAbout this authorCite: Antonia Pieiro. Over the past year, our studio has been deeply engaged in working with domestic materials, conducting experiments with these processes in two to three projects. One of these projects is a residential house located in Lom Sak District, Phetchabun Province, situated in the "Phetchabun Basin", which lies in the central-northern region of Thailand.Save this picture! The genesis of this residence was rooted in a careful analysis of the power of its location. The most striking geographical feature is Khao Nam Ko Yai, a prominent mountain that forms a powerful backdrop to the site. The proximity of the mountain also contributes to a recurring downslope wind that passes through the house. Furthermore, a critical aspect derived from the site is the subsurface composition of large gravel deposits within the sedimentary layer. This geological characteristic aligns with prior research on vernacular house construction in this region, where stone is traditionally used as a foundation for supporting house posts. This aspect will be further elaborated in the following discussion.Save this picture! Before conceptualizing the spatial arrangement of the house, we conducted an extensive research process. We owe a great deal to the research paper "Hean Sao Yong Hin" by Kanittha Pansri and Professor Dr. Veera Inpantang, which provided a framework for understanding vernacular architecture in the Phetchabun Basin. We were particularly fortunate to find that the research findings were highly consistent with the site's geological characteristics, offering a historical foundation that significantly informed the continuity of this project.Save this picture! One major limitation we faced was sourcing reclaimed timber from old houses in this region, which proved to be a challenging task. Consequently, we adjusted our approach by procuring timber from Chiang Mai instead. We dismantled three old houses in the suburban districts of Chiang Mai, meticulously documenting their proportions and surface characteristics. A small research team was tasked with developing models to explore the potential of repurposing these materials for new spatial functions. The outcome was a discovery of new architectural possibilities beyond the conventional vernacular design framework, challenging traditional floor plan arrangements and introducing new patterns of connectivity between doors and windows while preserving traces of previous usage.Save this picture!A defining characteristic of this residence is its use of stone as a foundational base for the wooden columns. These stones, naturally embedded beneath the site, were carefully excavated only to the extent necessary for construction, ensuring that the geological balance remained intact. This approach resonates with local architectural wisdom, yet it also raised concerns regarding structural integrity in response to increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! To address this, we integrated reinforced concrete (RC) elements into the structural system. Steel L-Bolts (20 mm in diameter) were embedded into the RC foundation before being anchored into the stone bases beneath each wooden column, thereby ensuring structural stability while maintaining the historical continuity of vernacular construction techniques. This method provided both aesthetic continuity and enhanced safety for the inhabitants.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Given Thailand's tropical climate, roofing, and eaves play a crucial role in passive cooling strategies. While modern technology offers various thermal insulation solutions, we selectively applied them only beneath the roof, as it is the most heat-exposed surface. For lateral heat mitigation, we adhered to the principle that air circulation itself serves as a powerful thermal buffer, facilitated by the downslope wind and the extensive eaves that envelop the house. This passive strategy significantly contributes to thermal comfort within the residence.Save this picture!Save this picture! The traces of human craftsmanship have always been a central focus of our studio's work. We deeply appreciate the homeowners for their openness and willingness to embrace the inherent imperfections of the materials. The walls resist the industrial pursuit of smooth perfection, the reclaimed wood retains the marks of its previous use, and the organic unpredictability of natural stone shapes each foundation uniquely. Nearly all the furniture and lighting fixtures were designed, prototyped, and refined in our studio before being installed in this house. It is a home imbued with craftsmanship that values practicality and human touch.Save this picture! The external environment was designed with ecological diversity in mind. A simple "Sai Kai" (serpentine) canal system was excavated to facilitate water flow and promote natural bioremediation. Instead of pursuing a manicured lawn aesthetic, we allowed for a heterogeneous mix of plant species to coexist, fostering an ecological dialogue among various plant forms. This approach moves beyond the conventional notion that only uniform green grass enhances a residence's visual appeal; rather, the presence of diverse vegetation contributes to the natural equilibrium of the ecosystem. In this way, the residence serves as a living school, providing its inhabitants with an ongoing, immersive learning experience in ecological coexistence.Save this picture!Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialWoodMaterials and TagsPublished on February 24, 2025Cite: "Baan Sao Yong Hin House / Housescape Design Lab" 24 Feb 2025.
