• 1,000 artists release silent album to protest UK copyright sell-out to AI
    techcrunch.com
The U.K. government is pushing forward with plans to attract more AI companies to the region through changes to copyright law that would allow developers to train AI models on artists content on the internet without permission or payment unless creators proactively opt out. Not everyone is marching to the same beat, though. On Monday, a group of 1,000 musicians released a silent album, protesting the planned changes. The album titled Is This What We Want? features tracks from Kate Bush, Imogen Heap, and contemporary classical composers Max Richter and Thomas Hewitt Jones, among others. It also features co-writing credits from hundreds more, including big names like Annie Lennox, Damon Albarn, Billy Ocean,The Clash, Mystery Jets, Yusuf / Cat Stevens, Riz Ahmed, Tori Amos, and Hans Zimmer. But this is not Band Aid part 2. And its not a collection of music. Instead, the artists have put together recordings of empty studios and performance spaces a symbolic representation of what they believe will be the impact of the planned copyright law changes. You can hear my cats moving around, is how Hewitt Jones described his contribution to the album. I have two cats in my studio who bother me all day when Im working. To put an even more blunt point on it, the titles of the 12 tracks that make up the album spell out a message: The British government must not legalize music theft to benefit AI companies. The album is just the latest move in the U.K. to bring attention to the issue of how copyright is being handled in AI training. Similar protests are underway in other markets, like the U.S., highlighting a global concern among artists.Ed Newton-Rex, who organized the project, has simultaneously been leading a bigger campaign against AI training without licensing. A petition he started has now been signed by more than 47,000 writers, visual artists, actors, and others in the creative industries, with nearly 10,000 of them signing up in just the last five weeks since the U.K. government announced its big AI strategy.Newton-Rex said he has also been running a nonprofit in AI for the last year where weve been certifying companies that basically dont scrape and train on great work without permission.Newton-Rex arrived at advocating for artists after having batted for both sides. Classically trained as a composer, he later built an AI-based music composition platform called Jukedeck that let people bypass using copyrighted works by creating their own. Its catchy pitch, where he rapped and riffed on the virtues of using AI to write music, won the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield competition in 2015. Jukedeck was eventually acquired by TikTok, where he worked for some time on music services. After several years at other tech companies like Snap and Stability, Newton-Rex is back to considering how to build the future without burning the past. Hes contemplating that idea from a pretty interesting vantage point: He now lives in the Bay Area with wife Alice Newton-Rex, VP of product at WhatsApp.The album release comes just ahead of the planned changes to copyright law in the U.K, which would force artists who do not want their work used for AI training purposes to proactively opt out.Newton-Rex thinks this effectively creates a lose-lose situation for artists since there is no opt-out method in place, or any clear way of being able to track what specific material has been fed into any AI system. We know that opt-out schemes are just not taken up, he said. This is just going to give 90% [to] 95% of peoples work to AI companies. Thats without a doubt. The solution, say the artists, is to produce work in other markets where there might be better protections for it. Hewitt Jones who threw a working keyboard into a harbor in Kent at an in-person protest not long ago (he fished it out, broken, afterwards) said hes considering markets like Switzerland for distributing his music in the future. But the rock and hard place of a harbor in Kent are nothing compared to the Wild West of the internet.Weve been told for decades to share our work online because its good for exposure. But now AI companies and, incredibly, governments are turning around and saying, Well, you put that online for free Newton-Rex said. So now artists are just stopping making and sharing their work. A number of artists have contacted me to say this is what theyre doing. The album will be posted widely on music platforms sometime Tuesday, the organizers said, and any donations or proceeds from playing it will go to the charity Help Musicians.

  • Apples $500 Billion AI BetSmart Strategy Or Overhyped AI Escalation?
    www.forbes.com
Apple plans to plow $500 billion in AI server manufacturing and compute infrastructure while ... [+] creating 20,000 new U.S. jobs.gettyApple made a surprise $500 billion investment announcement Monday with its plans to open AI server factories in Texas and expand data centers in several other U.S. states. Along with the half-trillion dollar pledge came a commitment to create 20,000 new jobs. This announcement places Apple squarely in the AI arms race, alongside Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon and other tech giants pouring billions into AI infrastructure.A More Aggressive Apple Takes A Big AI BiteHistorically, Apple has been less aggressive in AI in the past relative to its entrenched Big Tech competition. According to Dr. Ahmed Banafa, technology expert and engineering professor at San Jose State University, Apples move reinforces its AI ambitions and strengthens its long-term infrastructure. The choice of Houston is interestingTexas has become a magnet for tech investments due to its business-friendly policies, tax incentives and relatively lower energy costs. However, given Apples historically more cautious AI strategy compared to competitors like Microsoft and Google, this signals a more aggressive push into AI infrastructure," he wrote in an email exchange. This increase in AI spending is not occurring in isolation at Apple. Across the technology sector, tech firms will invest more than $320 billion in AI infrastructure this year alone, but some wonder if this use of capital is sustainable.Could Apples Investment Outpace Its AI Profits?Dr. Banafa notes that while AI necessitates huge capital expenditures in foundational models, AI chips and data centers, the sheer level of dizzying expenditures invites suspicions of overhyped AI hopium. The rapid spending increase does raise concerns about over-inflated expectations. The AI industry is experiencing an arms race, but the key question is whether these investments will translate into profitable, transformative applications rather than just infrastructure buildup," he explained.Mel Morris, Corpora.ai CEO, agrees and maintains that Apples announcementbig as it wasdoesnt say anything about how, if or when it will make returns on those investments.Apples announcement is filled with feel-good rhetoric but lacks the detailed substance one might expect. Investors will soon demand tangible returns backed by revenue growth and profitabilitya standard that, to date, only hardware vendors have consistently met," Morris wrote in an email message.Mel Morris is an entrepreneur and the CEO and co-founder of Corpora.ai, a groundbreaking AI-driven ... [+] research platform. He's also the former chairman of King Digital Entertainment, creators of the Candy Crush Saga.Used With Permission: Mel MorrisApple Skips Past The Energy Power PlayAside from capital expenditures, AI power usage is an increasing challenge. AI data centers consume exponentially more power than conventional computing architecture, but Apples release is mum on the subject of power generation plans.Dr. Banafa cautions that without committed energy strategies, AI scalability might encounter severe bottlenecks. The lack of discussion around power generation is concerning, especially considering Texas grid vulnerabilitiesas seen during winter storms and summer heatwaves. If companies like Apple, Microsoft and Google dont invest in dedicated energy solutionssuch as renewable microgrids or nuclear power partnershipsthey may face serious issues with AI scalability, he added.Morris echoes this concern, emphasizing the broader technological ecosystem beyond AI hardware. While AI is capturing headlines and hardware remains a major focus, we must also prioritize power generation, cooling and software," he wrote.Apple Onshoring And Its Quest For AI LeadershipThe other big aspect of this news is onshoring AI-critical production, reducing reliance on overseas supply chainsparticularly China. Apples move is part of a broader trend of tech companies diversifying semiconductor and AI investments beyond Asia.Dr. Banafa envisions strategic advantages but also significant hurdles.Onshoring high-tech manufacturing is strategically beneficial for national security, supply chain resilience and economic growth. However, challenges remain, including labor shortages, high costs compared to overseas manufacturing and the need for skilled workers. The semiconductor industry, for example, is struggling with a talent gap that could slow domestic production despite significant government subsidies (e.g., CHIPS Act), he added. How Will Big Tech Competitors Respond To Apples Move? Its not a stretch to say that Apples $500 billion bet is sending shockwaves across the sector. Morris foresees that Microsoft, Google and Amazon will be compelled to speed up their own AI infrastructure strategies, while AI chip leaders Nvidia and AMD will be compelled to develop their architectures more quickly."Expect a flurry of similar announcements. As Apple gears up to supercharge its 'Apple Intelligence, industry giants like Microsoftwith its Copilot, as well a Googlewith Android deployments, Meta and xAI will be prompted to reassess what this means for the future of consumer AI adoption.Apple Could Be The Catalyst For AIs Next Hype CycleWith Apple embarking on an aggressive push into AI infrastructure, concerns remain about power issues, regulation and long-term profitability. As AI transcends hype and speculation, the winners will not always be the ones investing the most. The winners will be those who best align with AIs actual value in the real world before the infrastructure competition turns into an expensive boondoggle. This latest AI news from Apple suggests it is playing to win.Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this article.

  • How You Can Shift Emotions So They Dont Control You
    www.forbes.com
While you may not be able to control emotional triggers, you can control and shift your response to ... [+] them. (Photo: Getty)gettyThere are the good manageable emotions like the love you feel when you see your significant other or a piece of avocado toast. Then there are the really difficult to manage emotions such as the rage you feel when someone takes your piece of avocado toast. A prevailing belief is that you only have two options in dealing with such baddy emotions: either confront them head on immediately or avoid them so that they come out later in some unexpected Anakin Skywalker-Hulk-Carrie type of way. But Ethan Kross, PhD, a professor of psychology and management/organizations at the University of Michigan, suggests shifting away from this all-or-none thinking in his new book Shift: Managing Your Emotions So They Dont Manage You.The book covers different ways you can shift the impact of your emotions and what you end up feeling, hence the title. This lays out a more flexible middle ground between the avoidance versus fully process as soon as possible extremes. Kross knows a thing or two about emotions and self-control as he is the director of the Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory at the University of Michigan and has been studying such things over the past two decades. You hear that you immediately have to face your fears and that avoidance is toxic, Kross explained to me. While chronically avoiding something is not good, being flexible with your attention, for example, can be useful.Attention ShiftersThis brings up one type of shifting: attention shifting. As Kross indicated, this is about the spotlight in your mind and where do you point it towards. So rather than immediately and constantly dealing with an emotion, not resting until it is fully processed, it may be better at times to shift attention away from such a problem, to give time for things to calm down while strategically deploying our attention, in the words of Kross.Kross mentioned how diverting or distracting yourself here and there from dealing with the emotion can be a useful strategy as long as we eventually get back to dealing with it. Where we point our attention can powerfully drive or diminish our emotions, he said. Sometimes we need to go back and forth before the problem is gone. This does make sense. Imagine yourself playing professional football. Going all out and constantly playing at a full sprint would probably not be a wise strategy. Instead, varying your effort and taking periodic breaks can offer adequate rest and allow you to gain new perspective and tackle opponents in different ways.Perspective ShiftersA perspective shifter is when you change how you view a problem and situation. It can be giving ... [+] yourself distance from the problem. (Photo: Getty)gettySpeaking of perspective, Kross then moved to another set of shifters, perspective shifters. In this case, perspective is how you view the problem and situation. A key to helping people reframe a situation is to shift perspective, give them distance, Kross emphasized. People can focus narrowly on the aversiveness of whats happening. Now, Kross admitted, This is easier fing said than done. He mentioned Solomons paradox, named after the fact that King Solomon could deliver great wisdom to others while failing to get his own personal life in order. But Kross did offer some specific ways to change perspective, such as mental time travel. How am I going to feel about that next week? Another possibility, When in the midst of an emotional experience, turn the volume down. Things could be worse. Then theres the shifting language possibility. When in another language, it doesnt have the same effect as when in the native language, said Kross. Its the foreign language effect. This may be yet another reason to take those Silbo Gomero language classes that youve always been wanting to take.Sensory ShiftersIt also helps to get a better sense of what your senses are taking in as senses are powerful emotion regulation shifters, according to Kross. Scientists asked several hundred individuals, why you listen to music, Kross related. And many responded, I like the way it makes me feel, as the links between sensation and emotion are strong. Therefore, you can change how you are feeling by changing the types of sensory inputs you are receiving. Say, for example, the Hanson song MMMBop really speaks to who you are. Then playing that song can help you feel more whole. Kross cautioned that the effects tend to be fleeting, though. There are only so many times you can keep playing MMMBop on loop. Plus, sensory shifters can be potent, so potent that people can use this tool to detriment, Kross warned. Risky sexual behaviors and emotional eating are two such examples.Space ShiftersShifting the space or physical environment around you can help shift emotions. (Photo: Getty)gettyYour physical environment certainly can provide many different sensory inputs. But theres more to physical space than just that. Physical spaces can play a powerful role in impacting how we feel, Kross explained. Going somewhere new can literally give us distance from our problems. Therefore, one way of space shifting is to take a trip.It may not be the most practical thing to go on vacation whenever you encounter a negative emotion. Fortunately, space shifting doesnt necessarily mean having to completely get away from your present locations. There are ways of interacting with local environment differently, Kross emphasized. You can modify your space, apply small shifts to your physical surroundings. This can include removing the cues that lead to negative emotions and putting in cues that activate the emotions that you want to have. One example offered by Kross is showing photos of pleasant experiences after youve had a painful experience. Another example is turning down your darn smartphone. You dont need to hear and see all those notifications from your smartphone every time a celebrity chooses to wear a new outfit. It can help to make your surroundings more peaceful and comforting. In the same way we attach to people, we attach to places in our environment, Kross related. We can have an oasis to go to when struggling.People ShiftersSpeaking of people, people can be great, except when they really suck. People can make you feel better or worse, Kross emphasized. How you talk to other people about your problems is important. Venting can be useful to strengthen bonds but it can lead to co-ruminations.In other words, will talking to others help you let go of negative emotions or instead cause you to dwell even more on the inciting problems? The latter issue is a common problem with talking about politics, where a constant cycle of complaints never leads to much action. Therefore, as Kross urged, Determine who in your network is a good emotional advisor. Who will first listen and empathize, and then work with you to broaden your perspective.Oh, and you know that standard advice to not compare yourself with other people that you may frequently hear? Well, Kross calls it some of the worst advice. We are a social species, theres no getting around that. When we are not sure where we stand, we suss that out.Telling people to not compare themselves with others can be a bit like telling telling a football player running onto a field to not pay attention to the opponents or teammates. Instead of avoiding comparisons, Kross suggested, Reframing comparisons. When comparing yourself to people to who are more successful, think If they can do it, I can do it. Similarly, when comparing yourself to people who are supposedly beneath you, think, If that happened to them that can happen to me. This can motivate you to help them. It feels good to help other people, Kross emphasized. Doing good deeds gives people a larger boost in positivity. A win-win all around.Culture ShiftersYes, helping each other can establish a good culture, which brings us to one more type of shifter: culture shifters. Culture is the air we breathe, said Kross. If it is all around us, we consume a culture that is promoting certain emotional states. He described how the prevailing culture in a social circle or organization will have norms that reinforce certain values and belief. These values and beliefs may or may not value emotional regulation and mental fitness.Of course, shifting the culture around you may not be the easiest of tasks. Clearly people at the top are in a position to shift culture, said Kross. There are always movements to shift the culture from the bottom up. But such movement can go bottoms-up when not enough people cooperate.Just because such movements fail doesnt mean that you have no control, though. One possibility is to identify or form a micro-culture that works better for you within the organization or social circle. And if you cant seem to grow that possibility, theres the make like a tree and leave option. If a culture isnt working for you, you can always leave that culture, Kross advised. Toxic cultures can have significant effects.Different Shifters Work Better For Different PeopleKross described the various shifters as tools that people can use just like a carpenter showing up for a job. Different combinations of tools, work for different different people, Kross said. You have to believe that you can manage your emotions, motivated to managing feelings and what happens next. He emphasized that while you cant control some parts of the emotional experience like an emotional trigger, you can control what comes afterwards. I cant determine for example when a cockroach will cross my desk, Kross related. The subsequent trajectory is different and more under your control. You have to think, Welcome to the playground. So, the use of shifters itself requires a shift, a shift from believing that you have no control over your emotions to being more of a boss over how you feel. In other words, when you find yourself in a difficult situation emotionally, you may want to get your shift together.

(2017-Present)February was a very dry month for dramas on Netflix. If it hadnt been for the second season of Mo which premiered on January 30 there wouldnt have been any new shows to add to our roundup of the best Netflix drama shows. As it is, we already had to dive into Netflixs catalog to find a second show to add: Atypical. The first month of the year opened on a strong note for dramas with American Primeval followed byShowtimesEscape At Dannemora. You can find these series and the rest of the best drama shows on Netflix below.Recommended VideosIf youre looking for more content, check out the best new shows to stream this week, the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, and the best shows on Amazon Prime.RelatedNetflixMo only had a short run on Netflix of two seasons, but it was critically acclaimed for its premise and the performance of the leading actor and series co-creator Mo Amer. In the show, Amer plays Mohammed Mo Najjar, an immigrant living in Texas who wants to find his own piece of the American dream.Unfortunately, Mos path is complicated by his status as a Palestinian refugee, and by the fact that hes not a U.S. citizen. Getting asylum and his citizenship is an uphill battle, but the United States is the only home hes ever really known. If Mo comes up short, hell be deported and sent back to a place that now feels completely foreign to him.Watch Mo on Netflix.NetflixAtypical follows Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), an autistic teenager who has only just realized that he may have more of a future than he envisioned for himself. More specifically, Sam wants to find a girlfriend, and thats not going to be easy especially since the first woman he crushes on is his therapist, Julia Sasaki (Amy Okuda).Sams desire to break away also has consequences for his parents, Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Doug Gardner (Michael Rapaport). There was clearly trouble in this relationship ahead of time, but just as Sam starts exploring his romantic possibilities, so too does Elsa outside of her marriage.Watch Atypical on Netflix.NetflixTheres nothing fun or romantic about the frontier in the Old West as seen in American Primeval. Instead, its a brutal look at how far some men are willing to go for land. For example, Brigham Young (Kim Coates), the leader of the LDS church, wants to claim the Utah territory for his followers. And if he has to engineer a massacre to get it, he will. Those actions leave one of his followers, Jacob Pratt (Dane DeHaan), clinging to his life and faith as he attempts to find his missing wife.Meanwhile, Sara Holloway (Betty Gilpin) is on a desperate journey with her son, Devin (Preston Mota), and a young Native American woman, Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier). Sara is a fugitive with a price on her head. The only hope she has for safety is help from Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch), a man raised by the Shoshone tribe. Isaac has his own cross to bear, but hell see this mission through regardless of the cost.Watch American Primeval on Netflix.ShowtimeBefore Ben Stiller helmed Apple TV+s Severance, he directed Showtimes Escape At Dannemora, a miniseries inspired by the 2015 jailbreak at New Yorks Clinton Correctional Facility. Patricia Arquette stars as Joyce Tilly Mitchell, a prison guard who isnt happy with her marriage. And that leaves Tilly open to having sexual relationships with two of her prisoners, Richard Matt (Benicio del Toro) and David Sweat (Paul Dano), both of whom are convicted murderers.Tilly is so drawn in by the pair that she helps them break out of prison, which causes massive collateral damage in her own life. Theres no way for Tilly to take back that mistake, and once the convicts are in the outside world, the manhunt begins.Watch Escape At Dannemora on Netflix.NetflixSome of the parallels between Yellowstoneand Territory are uncanny, including the way both shows have seismic changes to their status quos in their respective first episodes. Theres also a touch of Succession in Territory, as Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor) controls the largest cattle ranch in Australia, and as far as hes concerned, most of his family doesnt deserve to inherit it except his youngest son, Daniel (Jake Ryan). When Daniel winds up getting killed, the question of who will control the ranch threatens to tear the family apart again. Emily Lawson (Anna Torv) has perhaps the weakest claim since she married into the family through her husband, Graham (Michael Dorman). However, Emily may also be the Lawson familys best hope of holding on to their land as their enemies smell blood in the water and start trying to steal the ranch out from under them.Watch Territory on Netflix.NetflixVirgin River is about second chances for Melinda Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). The couple didnt even meet until Mel came to Virgin River to escape her suffocating life in Los Angeles. However, Mel quickly clashed with her new boss, Vernon Doc Mullin (Tim Matheson), who didnt see the value in her skills. And her romance with Jack was anything but smooth.Season 6 demonstrates how much things have changed. Mel is firmly established in the town and almost ready to walk down the aisle and exchange wedding vows with Jack. But theres still drama ahead for this couple, as well as a potentially very unpleasant surprise that leads into the seventh season. Kates the new ambassador to the U.K., and shes on the short list for becoming the next vice president of the United States, assuming she can defuse the aftermath of an apparent terrorist attack and prevent her country and the U.K. from getting sucked into a war. So, no pressure, really.Season 2 finds Kate embroiled in another mystery closer to home, as a car bombing claims the life of someone close to her. This only puts more pressure on Kates marriage to Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), who can plainly see that hes losing her love to the U.K. Foreign Secretary, Austin Dennison (David Gyasi). The current vice president, Grace Penn (Allison Janney), also enters the picture this season, and shes not going to step down without a fight.Watch The Diplomat on Netflix.NetflixEmpress Elisabeth may not be famous in America, but she was an important figure in the royal family of Austria and Hungary. Her story is retold in the German drama The Empress. It begins in 1854 when Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) meets Emperor Franz Joseph (Philip Froissant), the man who was originally going to marry her older sister, Duchess Helene (Elisa Schlott).Elisabeths marriage is strained largely due to the interference of her mother-in-law, Sophie (Melika Foroutan), the archduchess of Austria. The second season finds Elisabeth narrowly hanging on to her marriage and her position of power. Elisabeths saving grace may be her ability to emotionally connect to the commoners of her country. But shes still got plenty of enemies inside the Emperors court.Watch The Empress on Netflix.ShowtimeIf Yellowjackets were only about the survival of a girls soccer team lost in the wild, then it probably still would have ended up as one of Showtimes biggest hits, which is currently on loan to Netflix. The very first episode teased that dark times are ahead for the young women on the Yellowjackets, and the show hasnt even caught up to that point yet. What we have seen is that the Yellowjackets are largely on their own and increasingly desperate to simply live. That part of the show takes place 25 years in the past. The present-day sequences of Yellowjackets reveal that at least some of the girls made it out alive and grew up to become damaged women, as played by Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, and Lauren Ambrose. Almost all of those characters would much rather let the past die than reveal what really happened between them in the wilderness. The mysteries of this series are still unfolding, and Yellowjackets season 3 is coming to Showtime in 2025, so consider this your chance to dive in early.Watch Yellowjackets on Netflix.NetflixThis season, The Lincoln Lawyer isnt making fans wait by splitting the show into two halves. David E. Kelleys adaptation of Michael Connellys legal thriller novels has instead dropped all 10 episodes of season 3 while unleashing a deeply personal case for its title character, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo).Mickeys friend, Glory Days (Fiona Rene), has been killed. Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) didnt eat anyone like Dahmer did, but they did murder their parents, Jos (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menndez (Chlo Sevigny). The open questions in this nine-episode season are simple. Were the Menndez brothers the callous killers of their parents as portrayed in the media? Or were the siblings the victims of abuse at the hands of their parents? Theres also an argument that they could the victims and monsters of their own story.Watch Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix.Paramount Television/Lionsgate TelevisionThe wrestling business isnt what it used to be in Heels, a drama series that ran for two seasons on Starz. Following his superhero turn in Arrow, Stephen Amell plays Jack Spade, the owner of a local wrestling territory in Georgia and one of the top stars as a bad guy/heel. Jacks brother, Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig), is a rising star in the promotion as a good guy character/face.Sensing that Ace could displace him as the No. 1 draw of the promotion, Jack reneges on an agreement to let his brother defeat him. This sends Ace into a downward spiral that may kill his wrestling career unless he and Jack can come up with an even better gimmick for him.Watch Heels on Netflix.CBS StudiosTelevision audiences love a good redemption story, and thats part of the appeal of Fire Country. Fire season in California is so severe and dangerous that there really is a California Conservation Camp Program that recruits prison inmates to be volunteer firefighters in exchange for reduced sentences. Bode Donovan (Max Thieriot) is one of those inmates, and hes wasted enough of his life behind bars.Bodes desire to rebuild himself gets him sent back to his hometown, where he has to reunite and reconcile with his family while working alongside his fellow inmates and professional firefighters. Fire Country is one of the handful of shows on Netflix that are still producing new seasons on broadcast television. Michael is literally a genius, and he concocts a daring plan to get himself sent to the same prison as Lincoln in order to break him out. But before they can pull off that stunt, theyll need to make allies behind bars.Michael had to take this step because the man that Lincoln supposedly killed was the brother of the vice president of the United States. That means powerful forces are invested in keeping both brothers locked up. Lincolns ex-girlfriend, Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney), leads the fight to prove his innocence, only to discover that shes been targeted by the conspiracy that framed him.Watch Prison Break on Netflix.AMCDark Winds is the kind of show that could only have a home on AMC or a streaming service. There arent many thrillers set in 1970s Navajo County, but the series does an outstanding job of adapting Tony Hillermans novels. Zahn McClarnon stars as Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, and hes got plenty of problems before the thieves behind an armored truck heist hide in his territory. The FBI sends Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) into the tribal police as an undercover deputy, but Leaphorn is too smart to be fooled by that trick. Instead, Leaphorn convinces Chee to help him solve a double homicide that soon proves to have a link to thieves hiding among them. There are only six episodes in each season of the series, so the storylines move quickly. And a third season of Dark Winds is on the way.Watch Dark Winds on Netflix.ABC StudiosYou may be wondering why Lost is on the list of the best dramas on Netflix. And the answer is that we dont exclude genre shows from this roundup, especially when Lost picked up an Emmy for Best Drama series in 2005. The early seasons of the show werent as heavy on sci-fi and fantasy as the later seasons were. Even after those elements were introduced, Losts stories kept viewers coming back to follow the fates of a large cast of characters. That not only gave the show exceptional depth, but it also meant that nearly anyone could be killed off even main characters.Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox), Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly), John Locke (Terry OQuinn), James Sawyer Ford (Josh Holloway), and Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews) are among the survivors of a plane crash on an uncharted island. Staying alive is hard enough for this group, but the island has plenty of mysteries waiting for them to discover. And in this tropical paradise, what the survivors dont know can definitely kill them.Watch Lost on Netflix.ABC StudiosSome shows seem destined to live forever, like The Simpsonsand Greys Anatomy. To put this in perspective, 20 seasons used to be the record for the longest-running show on TV before the Law & Order franchise made mincemeat out of that mark. Greys Anatomy has now matched that mark with 20 seasons, all of which are on Netflix ahead of the season 21 premiere on ABC this fall. One of the few cast members to stay on from the beginning of the show to the present is Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey. Pompeo has taken a reduced role in the more recent seasons while maintaining top billing. It is her show, after all. Viewers have witnessed Merediths growth from a young resident doctor at Seattle Grace Hospital to a formidable researcher who is searching for new ways to defeat Alzheimers disease.Theres currently a new crop of young cast members to pick up the slack now, but were partial to the original cast including Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T. R. Knight, Isaiah Washington, and Chandra Wilson, who, like Pompeo, is still with the show. There are currently 430 episodes streaming on Netflix, so this is one binge that you can stretch out for a long time.Watch Greys Anatomy on Netflix.BBCYou may notice some thematic similarities between Boiling Point and The Bear. This miniseries is a sequel to the 2021 Boiling Point film, which depicted the worst night in the life of Andy (Stephen Graham), as his restaurant dreams went down in flames. The show picks up a significant amount of time later, and brings Carly (Vinette Robinson) to the forefront as she runs her own restaurant with many of Andys former kitchen staff now working for her. This has led to some very hard feelings between Carly and Andy, with the latter harboring some resentment toward her. Unfortunately for Carly, shes learning firsthand just how difficult it is to manage a successful restaurant. And for all of her hard work and effort, Carlys restaurant may meet the same fate as Andys.Watch Boiling Point on Netflix.ShowtimeAfter watching Breaking Bad (which is also on Netflix), is it really a shock to see Bryan Cranston play a father who is rapidly losing the ideals and traits that made him a good man? But hell throw all of that away when his son, Adam (Hunter Doohan), is involved with a fatal hit-and-run accident.Michaels first instinct is to tell his son to confess to his crimes and face justice. Those are all the characteristics of a police hero if Dexter werent also a serial killer.Dexter has little interest in quieting his urges to kill, but his late adoptive father, Harry Morgan (James Remar), taught him to target only the criminals who escaped justice, including rapists and murderers. • I tested the 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite and 1 core makes a difference
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsThe phones used for testingTesting the difference that 1 core makesSnapdragon 8 Elite 8-core vs 7-core: BatteryHow much of a difference does 1 core make? The Snapdragon 8 Elite powers most of the best Android phones, and brings a vast increase in power for CPU, GPU, and NPU tasks. However, one of the key problems facing Qualcomm is the current trend of thin phones, as the Snapdragon 8 Elite requires better cooling to effectively dissipate heat. The companys answer? The 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite. It is essentially the same chipset but with one performance core removed in favor of better cooling and heat dissipation. Its ideal for devices like the worlds thinnest foldable the Oppo Find N5 which uses the new chipset.Recommended VideosLosing one performance core may be an acceptable sacrifice for the promise of better battery life, but does it deliver? Qualcomm says it is around 14 percent slower than the overclocked 8-core variant, but what do the benchmarks show, and is this a worthy compromise? I tested both variants to find out.RelatedAndy Boxall / Digital TrendsIts worth noting the phones that I used for testing each processor, and the methods used for testing. For the benchmarks, weve picked two well-known benchmarks that we also use to benchmark phones for our reviews: GeekBench 6 and 3DMark. More on this below. Each phone maker has different optimizations in software, and different phones come with varying degrees and types of RAM and storage. To account for these variances, we picked the OnePlus 13 which is powered by the 8-core Snapdragon 8 Elite and has the closest experience to the Oppo Find N5.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe Oppo Find N5 is the first phone to run the new 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is necessitated by its thin profile that measures just 4.2mm thick when unfolded. I have only spent a couple of days with the new foldable, so its too early to talk about overall performance, but many of the findings below are also prevalent in real-world usage.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsTo test the differences between the two chipsets, we ran a series of three benchmarks multiple times on the Oppo Find N5 and calculated the average of the results. Weve previously tested the OnePlus 13 multiple times so used an average of those results.Where possible, Ive also included additional results on devices running both the Snapdragon 8 Elite and other processors, as tested by myself or my colleagues. Its worth noting that most of these phones also have similar specs, but have differences in the rest of the specs package. For GeekBench, I ran the CPU and GPU tests, resulting in three scores for single-core and multi-core CPU performance, and GPU performance under heavy loads.TestCPU SingleCPU MultiGPUOnePlus 13 (Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core)3107921318065Oppo Find X8 Pro (Dimensity 9400)2753810220522Realme GT7 Pro(Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core)3112942519065ROG Phone 9 Pro(Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core)3073985519403Oppo Find X8(Dimensity 9400)2839799120349Oppo Find N5(Snapdragon 8 Elite 7-core)2885797813875Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra(Snapdragon 8 Gen 3)2314710415898Samsung Galaxy S24 FE(Exynos 2400e)2122662515526Unsurprisingly, one fewer performance core has a large impact on all tasks. While the CPU performance is in line with the Mediatek Dimensity 9400 and the Oppo Find N5 runs as smooth as the Find X8 Pro there is a marked impact on graphical performance.Looking at last years devices, the graphical performance of the 7-core 8 Elite also does not match the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, or the Exynos 2400e. CPU performance is markedly improved, but the GPU performance leaves a lot to be desired. In the Geekbench 6 test, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 7-core reveals severe throttling in both CPU and GPU performance, but this is just one test: does our next also reveal the same trends? This test is split into two parts: we tested the GPU in each device on the Solar Bay test for performance but also ran the Solar Bay Stress Test to test the battery life under heavy performance needs.TestSolar BayOnePlus 13 (Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core)11714Oppo Find X8 Pro (Dimensity 9400)11560Realme GT7 Pro(Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core)11200Oppo Find N5(Snapdragon 8 Elite 7-core)9333Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra(Snapdragon 8 Gen 3)8674Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra(Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 8-core)12119Here the 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite displays similar trends to the CPU testing, with a 20% reduction in GPU performance. Ultimately this means the Find N5 wont be as good for gaming necessitated by the extremely thin profile as the OnePlus 13 but this will only impact gameplay on the best AAA games.Overall graphical performance is still improved over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 used in last years Galaxy S24 Ultra, but its not as vast an improvement as the 8-core variant.QualcommThe other area that a processor will impact heavily is the battery life. Optimizations in battery life can mean the difference between four hours and six hours of gameplay, and intensive gaming is a great way to test the ability of each device to operate at sustained peak loads. To do this, we use the Solar Bay Stress Test, which runs a longer version of the Solar Bay test for twenty minutes. Its core premise is to showcase how a device will perform over extended periods of ray-traced gaming, but its also a good indicator of overall graphical performance.Alongside the score produced, we also log the battery drain to understand the overall impact of 20 minutes of resource-intensive gaming on your battery life. However, considering that each battery has different characteristics and capacities, Ive standardized the battery drain by approximating the capacity lost in milliampere-hours (mAh).In effect, a higher battery drain in mAh means the phone can sustain peak gaming performance for a shorter time.TestSolar BayStress TestBattery Drain(%)Battery Drain(mAh)OnePlus 13 (Snapdragon 8 Elite)1177417%~ 1,000 mAhOppo Find X8 Pro (Dimensity 9400)110519%~ 530 mAhROG Phone 9 Pro(Snapdragon 8 Elite)1000913%~ 750 mAhGalaxy S24 Ultra(Snapdragon 8 Gen 3)830810%~ 500 mAhGalaxy S25 Ultra(Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 8-core)1050013%~650 mAhOppo Find N5(Snapdragon 8 Elite 7-core)915611%~615 mAhOne of the key problems with the Snapdragon 8 Elite is the battery drain under extended peak performance, and the 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite is designed to offer similar performance while reducing the battery drain.Looking at the results, theres a marked improvement in the battery life compared to the OnePlus 13, but thats mainly indicative of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 8-core variant requiring significantly power than previous years. The best showcase of this is the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which scores 25% higher than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but drains 30% more battery in the same test.QualcommThe 8-core version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite is a performance powerhouse, but it drains a lot of battery under extended loads and requires a larger vapor chamber for heat dissipation. For many of the best Android phones, fulfilling these requirements isnt a problem, but there are plenty of devices where this isnt feasible. For them, the 7-core variant exists, which removes a performance core for the promise of better battery life and heat management. Its meant to enable phones to become even thinner, and will probably be the chipset inside the new Galaxy S25 Edge.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe trade-off is the 10-15% drop in CPU performance which is forgivable, and the bigger drop in GPU performance which is unforgivable. The power requirements and success of the 8-core variant mean expectations are high for an inferior product with the same name, and it feels like this is closer to the Snapdragon 8s Elite than being a true flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.Branding aside, its still great for day-to-day usage, but it lacks that extra punch that makes a phone with the 8-core Snapdragon 8 Elite processor so appealing. It remains to be seen if the battery life is improved enough for this to be a worthwhile trade-off, but Ill cover this in more detail in my upcoming Find N5 feature.Editors Recommendations

  • Big animals have higher cancer risk but also evolved better defences
    www.newscientist.com
African elephants have extra copies of genes that help resist cancerNeil Aldridge/Nature Picture Library/AlamyBigger animals live longer and have more cells that could go awry, so we would expect them to have a greater risk of developing cancer. A comprehensive analysis of 263 species suggests this is indeed the case, but also finds that some large animals have evolved ways to curb the risk.We provide the first empirical evidence to show that theres an association between body size and cancer prevalence, meaning that bigger species get more cancer than smaller species, says George Butler at University College London. AdvertisementThe results stand in contrast to prior studies that have found no link between body mass and cancer rates. But many of these involved just a few dozen species, says Butler. To gain a broader view, Butler and his colleagues analysed data on the size and cancer rates of 79 species of bird, 90 mammals, 63 reptiles and 31 amphibians. This data came from previous work by other researchers, who had sifted through autopsy records that logged whether captive animals kept in places like zoos and aquariums had cancer when they died. The team found that larger animals were slightly more likely to have cancer at the time of their death compared with smaller ones. Across birds and mammals, every 1 per cent increase in body mass was linked to a 0.1 per cent increase in cancer rate, on average. Body mass data wasnt available for reptiles and amphibians, so the team used body length, finding that every 1 per cent increase was linked to an average rise in cancer rate of 0.003 per cent. Unmissable news about our planet delivered straight to your inbox every month.Sign up to newsletterButler and his team say their findings challenge a long-standing idea known as Petos paradox, which points out that cancer rates should correlate with body size but dont. On the other hand, Vera Gorbunova at the University of Rochester in New York state says the weakness of the correlation still demands explanation. The increase in risk they see is very, very minor, and its just not proportional at all to body size, she says. If you take a small animal like a mouse, and a human is maybe 100 times bigger, or an elephant is 1000 times bigger, the difference in cancer rate is not 100 times higher in humans, or 1000 times higher in the elephant. That suggests larger species have evolved more ways to protect themselves, says Gorbunova.Indeed, by using evolutionary trees to infer animals rates of body size evolution, the team found that bird and mammal species of similar size had better defences against cancer if they had experienced a more rapid increase in size during their evolution.Previous studies have pinpointed genetic adaptations in elephants and whales that may protect against cancer by improving DNA repair or stopping faulty cells from dividing.A deeper understanding of how some animals resist cancer could lead to new therapies for people, says Gorbunova. If you find out that, in these cancer-resistant animals, there are particular biological pathways that are tweaked differently, we could also design, for example, small molecules that would target these pathways and then either kill cancer cells more efficiently, or maybe even prevent cancer from occurring, she says. These would be likely to be very promising drugs because, in the course of evolution, those mechanisms have been tested over millions of years, she says.Journal reference:PNAS DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2422861122Topics:

  • Games Inbox: Which Nintendo Switch 2 games will be released this year?
    metro.co.uk
Is even Mario Kart 9 a given? (YouTube)The Tuesday letters page expects the GTA 6 and PS5 Pro to be Sonys big Christmas combo, as another reader is unimpressed by Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukLimited timeI dont think a June release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 makes sense for any reason other than Nintendo are trying to avoid something, aka GTA 6. I certainly havent heard any other explanation, unless they were aiming for March, like the first Switch, and this is just the closest they could get. Maybe its a combination of the two.It does make me wonder how many games well get this year though, as youve only got six months to get everything out, instead of nine. For the Switch 1 we had Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.That is a lot of big name games and I really cant see us getting that many again. My best guess would be Mario Kart 9, a Super Mario/Donkey Kong game, Metroid Prime 4, Splatoon 3, and some kind of Zelda remake. But even that seems to be pushing it, especially if you add in one or two new franchises, which would be my preference. We just dont know at this point, but a June release date combined with how much longer it takes to make games, etc. means that were never going to get as good a line-up as the Switch 1 again.FocusNo more sequelsIt seems a very odd thing to me, to pretend FromSoftware have anything against sequels, especially when the best explanation for why Bloodborne has been ignored for so long is because a sequel is on its way.As much as I would love that though Id love a brand new game even more. If I had my way Id stop all of the big developers from making sequels. You can still make similar things, like Dark Souls to Elden Ring, but its so much more interesting when youre not trying to do fan service and are prevented from doing things because it doesnt fit with a similar idea.Id much prefer whatever From do next to be a surprise and the worst thing they could possibly announce is Dark Souls 4. Thats how I feel anyway. I think the same about Santa Monica and God Of War.FangThings can only get better worseAssassins Creed Shadows really does seem to be a cursed game. I have no interest in it, and no real love for Ubisoft, but even I feel bad for them at this point, now that its leaked out a month early. Especially if everyones going to play it without the final update and think its even worse than it is.I dont think Ubisoft are many peoples favourite company but as indifferent as we may all be now to their problems its going to be worse when theyre gone and all their games are sold off to different people. At least Ubisoft had to make an effort with the Assassins Creed games because they were their bread and butter, but things can always get worse.Which means Im in an odd position where Im hoping the game does well just to keep the company going and have at least few games that are just made by the same three companies.Henry IXEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe more the merrierHave to say I (respectfully) disagree with the letter that Wrex wrote the other day. Whilst I accept Astro Bot doesnt quite hit the heights of most 3D Mario games it made a damn good try of it.And although it obviously took a lot of inspiration from Mario it had a few ideas of its own. In particular, I enjoyed the slow down time and shrink Astro Bot power-ups.Weve reached a bit of plateau with gaming technology recently and Id argue most games these days, especially big budget ones, are heavily inspired by others but it doesnt still mean they cant be great in their own right.Certain genres of games, such as 3D action platformers or first person shooter games are released almost every other month but when it comes to 3D platformers the cup doesnt exactly runneth over. Frankly, I hope the next Astro Bot is more of the same and doesnt try to change the formula.matc7884Viral marketingBack when XCOM 2 came out I made a team based on my Twitter mutuals to send to their deaths against the alien horde, I saw a lot of other people doing the same thing at the same time. It actually seems strange to me that Ive never seen a game lean into this idea.Imagine if XCOM 3 let you post a link to social media which would take anyone who follows it to a character creation screen. They could then enter their basic details, choose their appearance, and maybe take some kind of simple personality test which would choose their character class. After that, their character is shipped off to become an expendable redshirt in your squad, and naturally the reader is then shown a trailer for the game and links to where they can buy it.It seems like an easy way to get people talking about the game online, but Ive never seen anything like it.TGN ProfessorRace to the bottomJust thought I would chime in as well about the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. I loved Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, for me it was up there with Mario Kart. I didnt enjoy the last Team Sonic Racing though, for various reasons, so was sceptical about the new one and have to say its a bit of a mess. For starters, as the other reader said, its so chaotic. Theres weapons and rings flying all over the place, with no chance of defending yourself properly. The tracks have obstacles and traps everywhere. Then theres the weapon icons, which are unclear even after a few hours playing. I still struggled to know what weapon did what. The boat and plane sections where too short and didnt control as well as Transformed did. Unless they make drastic changes to the game it definitely wont be one I will be buying. It feels like so many games are catering for kids with no concentration now, so they have to be so in your face and chaotic. Maybe Im just getting too old. I really dont know why we cant just have a remaster of Transformed instead, its still a game I play on Xbox, as its back compatible.RobArtificial demandThat grinning photo of Satya Nadella, in your story about generative AI in games, says it all as far as Im concerning. The guy clearly knows absolutely nothing about games and is quite happy to spout nonsense about AI being the future of gaming (how many futures of gaming has Xbox botched by this point?) while the people that actually make games want nothing to do with it.Why do we need AI to make games? We already have people to do that. AI cant invent things. It has no imagination. All it can do is copy things and, at best, put them together in unusual combinations. You need a person to create and its clear to me that Microsoft doesnt value that at all.GollumDynamic duoI had no idea that the price difference between the PS4 Pro and PS5 Pro was so extreme. I knew the new one was more expensive, but I didnt think it was that much. Going from 349 to 700 is pure insanity and the fact that I didnt realise the difference just goes to how unappealing the PS5 Pro is, that I didnt pay that much attention.I cant think of any game that has been shown to run better on it in any important way and I dont think any Sony game has come out since its been out. Astro Bot came out beforehand and didnt need it anyway.Sony can say that its only for hardcore gamers as much as they like but the fact is that its an insult they could think to charge anyone that much for anything, without it being the best thing since sliced bread. But the PS5 Pro is not only the most expensive console ever, its the most pointless ever.Although, that only makes me more inclined to believe the rumours that Sony and Rockstar are going to team up to bundle the PS5 Pro and GTA 6 together and claim that the PS5 Pro is the best way to play the game. That sounds very believable to me and also something that is likely to work.I shouldnt worry about other people are spending their money on but if thats Sonys big plan for the end of the generation I couldnt be more underwhelmed.DermotInbox also-ransIs there really a point in remaking Persona 4? How different is it going to be? Surely remaking 1 and 2 would be much more useful, as the graphics are old and the translations arent that great.EddieI was struggling to understand how there could be anyone in the world mad enough to pay $6,000 for a crisp that looked, very vaguely like a Pokmon. And then I remembered influencers are a thing.BoobooMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
