• Silent Hill 2 developer is working with Konami on a mystery game
    www.theverge.com
Like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, Konami and Bloober Team are back in action together. Bloober Team announced that it will continue its partnership with the Japanese publisher working on a new project. The trust built upon the success of Silent Hill 2 laid the foundation for signing another agreement for a new project, the announcement read. And while the new project will be something based on Konamis IP, the two companies did not share if the next game will be another Silent Hill or something else from Konamis back catalogue. (Hey, just thinkin out loud here, but when was the last Castlevania game released? 2014? Oh, OK.)Konami and Bloober Team paired up in 2022 when the companies announced they would be collaborating on a remake of Silent Hill 2. Due to lukewarm reviews of Bloobers original horror game The Medium, there was skepticism that the studio would be able to pull off a remake of one of the most celebrated survival horror games of its time. But Silent Hill 2 launched to rave reviews and sales making it the fastest selling entry in the Silent Hill series.Beyond Bloober Team, Konami is also working on a new, non-remake Silent Hill game named Silent Hill F that it debuted in 2022 but has since provided scant updates. Theres also a movie adaptation of Silent Hill 2 in the works with Christophe Gans, the director of the first (not great!) Silent Hill movie, tapped to direct.

All by roughly 2020. Obviously things didnt quite turn out the way the EV and robotaxi boosters hoped. On this episode of The Vergecast, we dig into why. The Verges Andy Hawkins joins to explain why the momentum continues to turn against the EV revolution but why carmakers simply cant give up the fight, or risk losing it before it even really starts. • Activision Finally Admits It Uses Generative AI for Some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Assets After Backlash Following 'AI Slop' Zombie Santa Loading Screen
    www.ign.com
Call of Duty maker Activision has finally admitted to using generative AI in the development of Black Ops 6, nearly three months after fans had accused the company of creating an AI slop Zombie Santa loading screen. In December, following the release of the Season 1 Reloaded update, fans noticed a number of telltale signs in Black Ops 6 loading screens, calling cards, and art used to explain how Zombies community events work.At the centre of the backlash was a loading screen image of Zombie Santa, aka 'Necroclaus,' which some said showed the undead Father Christmas with six fingers. Generative AI often struggles with hands, adding extra fingers where they shouldn't be.Black Ops 6's 'Necroclaus' loading screen. Image credit: Activision Publishing.Another image of a gloved hand was used to show off a new Zombies community event. It contained what looked like six fingers with no thumb on-screen, suggesting up to seven digits on this hand. The central image includes a gloved hand with some odd things going on. Image credit: Activision Publishing. The release of the Zombie Santa image sparked a closer look at other images in Black Ops 6, which some in the Call of Duty community subsequently called into question. Redditor Shaun_LaDee highlighted three images included in paid bundles that have irregularities that could suggest the use of generative AI.Fans then called on Activision to disclose the use of generative AI for art that is included in bundles that are sold, and following new AI disclosure rules for Steam, it has now added a vague disclosure that covers the entirety of Black Ops 6 on Valves platform.Black Ops 6s Steam AI Generated Content Disclosure reads: Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets. In July, Wired reported that Activision sold an AI-generated cosmetic for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 last year. The cosmetic in question was not named, but was linked to the Yokais Wrath bundle released in December 2023. The store did not disclose any use of generative AI for this bundle. This bundle cost 1,500 COD Points, the premium virtual currency sold for real-world money that generates hundreds of millions of dollars for Activision each year. 1,500 COD Points is approximately valued at $15.Wired pointed out that Microsoft, which owns Activision Blizzard after its $69 billion acquisition of the company last year, cut 1,900 staff from its gaming business just months after Activision sold this skin. The report alleged that 2D artists jobs were being replaced by AI at the company.A lot of 2D artists were laid off, one anonymous Activision artist told the site. Remaining concept artists were then forced to use AI to aid in their work. Activision employees were allegedly made to sign up for AI training, with its use promoted throughout the business.Generative AI is one of the hottest topics within the video game and entertainment industries, which have both suffered massive layoffs in recent years. Generative AI thus far has drawn criticism from players and creators due to a mix of ethical issues, rights issues, and AIs struggles to produce content audiences actually enjoy. For instance, Keywords Studios attempted to create an experimental game internally using entirely AI. The game failed, with Keywords citing to investors that AI was unable to replace talent.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. • Ubisoft Responds to Assassin's Creed Shadows Leak
    www.ign.com
Yesterday, February 24, we reported that Assassins Creed Shadows had leaked online, with numerous people streaming the game a month ahead of its official release date on March 20.Over the weekend, and as spotted by the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, now-deleted social media posts showed physical copies of the game being sold ahead of its street date, and multiple streams of the unreleased game popped up on platforms like Twitch.Developer and publisher Ubisoft has now responded to the leak, confirming on the Assassin's Creed subreddit that it was aware of the issue, and implored players not to "spoil the experience for others.""We are aware players have accessed Assassins Creed Shadows ahead of its official release. The development team is still working on patches to prepare the experience for launch, and any footage shared online does not represent the final quality of the game. "Leaks are unfortunate and can diminish the excitement for players," Ubisoft added. "We kindly ask you not to spoil the experience for others. Thank you to our community for already taking steps to protect everyone from spoilers."Stay in the shadows, avoid the spoilers, and keep an eye on our channel for more official surprises in the coming weeks! March 20 will be here soon!"The leaks will be another blow for Ubisoft and its leading Assassin's Creed series. The development team has already had to apologize for using a historical recreation group's flag without permission, and then again for inaccuracies in Assassin's Creed Shadows' depictions of Japan.Assassin's Creed Shadows was initially scheduled to release in November, but Ubisoft bumped it back to February 14, and then again to the current release date of March 20. A struggling Ubisoft needs it to perform well following lacklustre sales of other recent releases and an investor backlash.Vikki Blake is a reporter, critic, columnist, and consultant. • European sports tech heads to US with media giant Comcast
    thenextweb.com
Two European sports tech startups are heading to the US for an R&D programme run by media giant Comcast.Irelands Orreco will cross the Atlantic with a trove of athletic performance software, while Icelands Oz Sports will bring an AI-driven camera system. On arrival, the duo will join Comcast NBCUniversal SportsTech, a six-month accelerator.During the programme, the companies will tap into expertise from various industry leaders. Among them are Comcast broadcasting networks NBC Sports, Sky Sports, and the Golf Channel from Comcasts broadcasting empire. Further support will come from a star-studded squad of partners, including the Premier League, the PGA Tour, and NASCAR.Register NowThe diverse lineup of experts is a key selling point. On a video call from Comcasts headquarters in Philadelphia, Jenna Kurath, Head of Comcast NBCUniversal SportsTech, said the programme is powered by partnerships.By bringing the best of innovation into our organisation, forging those strategic relationships with emerging startups, and working alongside some of the most elite sports organisations in the world, were able to really push us beyond the status quo, Kurath told TNW.The collaborative approach has one overall target: cultivating a new generation of sports tech. But for the teams involved, the attractions are varied. The selected teams receive new routes to accelerate product development, forge industry relationships, and refine commercial strategies. Their partners gain access to emerging technologies that could enhance future broadcasts and sporting events.Comcast, meanwhile, can get an edge on market trends, strengthen partnerships, unlock new revenue streams, and enhance customer experiences. The company is also investing in startups selected for the programme.Inside the programmeThe potential benefits have proved alluring for startups. Over 1,600 teams applied to this years programme. The cohort was then whittled down to just 10 companies.Kurath breaks down the selection process into three key criteria. The first is, is it a problem were solving? The second is, do we have a line of sight on how well test and pilot that technology over the six-month programme and beyond? But probably most important of all is, is this the team that we believe can do it and is this the team we want to work alongside?Orreco impressed the selectors with an AI sports analytics platform. The software interprets camera data, blood biomarkers, GPS, and other data sources. It then provides personalised insights on performance, nutrition, training, sleep, and recovery.OZ Sports, meanwhile, earned a spot on the roster after developing an AI-driven, multi-camera 4K60p HDR production unit for broadcasting. The system offers remote sports coverage in top-notch quality at a fraction of the price. With Comcast recently winning new rights to NBA and Premier League games, the system could support the expanded coverage. This is a really cost-effective, efficient way for us to do that and make it the best broadcast experience, Kurath said.Orreco and Oz Sports join a range of European companies that have entered the programme.Europes sports tech rosterOne recent European graduate is the UKs Kymira, which developed infrared-infused recovery apparel for the Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey team. The gear was initially built for the players, but the benefits have also been tested on front office staff.Another alumnus is Manchester-based Dizplay, meanwhile, makes sports fans active participants in the spectator experience. In partnership with Sky Sports, the startup introduced a Viewers Verdict for boxing broadcasts, allowing audiences to share real-time opinions and enhance social commentary. This technology could also expand beyond sports, bringing interactivity to live news, talk shows, and other broadcasts.A third British graduate, Tickets for Good, provides a platform that offers discounted tickets to tailored audiences. That could mean sports fans, but it could also serve teachers or first responders. Were always looking for companies that are proving themselves in the grand stage of sports, but when they have extensibility into other areas of our business, its just all the more powerful, Kurath said. For European members of the programme, the accelerator offers a springboard to the worlds biggest market.A lot of the international companies are very strong within their own specific country, but are looking to break into the US market, Kurath said. It is huge, it is nuanced. It is not an easy market. The sports industry is not an easy one to break into, so were opening doors for them and giving them really deep customer insights on what it means for your technology to succeed in the US market. • Dutch unicorn Bird flees overregulated Europe for global hubs and a meditation retreat
    thenextweb.com
Dutch software firm Bird is moving most of its operations out of the Netherlands and opening new global hubs as it seeks a reprieve from overregulation in Europe, said co-founder and CEO Robert Vis.The AI Act, financing, compensation, taxes, employment law starting and running a company [in Europe] is hard, Vis told TNW, adding that there are too many disparate markets that are overregulated with no clear vision for the future while the world around us is changing.Bird (formerly MessageBird) is one of the Netherlands leading tech scaleups, reaching unicorn status in 2018. Birds main product is a cloud-based platform that manages customer communications across messaging apps, calls, video, SMS, and email. The company also recently launched a new AI employee chatbot, which handles tasks such as responding to customer inquiries, qualifying leads, and providing personalised support.Vis is now looking overseas to fuel the companys next advances. Both The Hague and Brussels enjoy being in meetings and talking more than they get shit done, Vis said, adding that EU policymakers are killing innovation. Amsterdam-based Bird will now open up three new offices in the US, and one each in Singapore, Dubai, and Istanbul. It will also open a meditation, rejuvenation, and health centre in Thailand for its employees, Vis said in a LinkedIn post.Nevertheless, Bird will maintain an office in Lithuania and keep its tax base in the Netherlands for now so its not leaving the EU entirely.Earlier this month, Bird cut 120 jobs roughly one-third of its total workforce, which is mainly based in Europe. New AI tools contributed to the staff cuts, said Vis, but it was also an effort to position our teams closer to our customers in the Americas and Asia, he told TechCrunch. The news comes as the EU pushes ahead with its landmark AI Act, which entered force last year. The act lays out a rulebook for governing AI based on risk levels, designed to ensure the technology is deployed safely, transparently, and ethically. The US, meanwhile, is moving in the opposite direction. While the EU imposes strict rules, the Trump administration is removing AI restrictions and giving tech sector leaders such as Elon Musk prominent roles in government. There is no stopping this technology whether we like it or not, said Vis. Whatever the future will hold if you want to compete you need to be liberal not restrictive.Vis is a former speaker atTNW Conference, which takes place on June 19-20 in Amsterdam. • GitVenom Malware Steals $456K in Bitcoin Using Fake GitHub Projects to Hijack Wallets
    thehackernews.com
Feb 25, 2025Ravie LakshmananGaming / Threat IntelligenceCybersecurity researchers are calling attention to an ongoing campaign that's targeting gamers and cryptocurrency investors under the guise of open-source projects hosted on GitHub.The campaign, which spans hundreds of repositories, has been dubbed GitVenom by Kaspersky."The infected projects include an automation instrument for interacting with Instagram accounts, a Telegram bot that enables the remote management of Bitcoin wallets and a crack tool to play the Valorant game," the Russian cybersecurity vendor said."All of this alleged project functionality was fake, and cybercriminals behind the campaign stole personal and banking data and hijacked cryptowallet addresses from the clipboard."The malicious activity has facilitated the theft of 5 bitcoins, approximately worth $456,600 as of writing. It's believed the campaign has been ongoing for at least two years, when some of the fake projects were published. A majority of the infection attempts have been recorded in Russia, Brazil, and Turkey. The projects in question are written in various programming languages, including Python, JavaScript, C, C++, and C#. But regardless of the language used, the end goal is the same: Launch an embedded malicious payload that's responsible for retrieving additional components from an attacker-controlled GitHub repository and executing them.Prominent among these modules is a Node.js information stealer that collects passwords, bank account information, saved credentials, cryptocurrency wallet data, and web browsing history; compresses them into a .7z archive, and exfiltrates it to the threat actors via Telegram. Also downloaded via the bogus GitHub projects are remote administration tools like AsyncRAT and Quasar RAT that can be used to commandeer infected hosts and a clipper malware that can substitute wallet addressed copied into clipboard with an adversary-owned wallet so as to reroute the digital assets to the threat actors."As code sharing platforms such as GitHub are used by millions of developers worldwide, threat actors will certainly continue using fake software as an infection lure in the future," Kaspersky researcher Georgy Kucherin said."For that reason, it is crucial to handle processing of third-party code very carefully. Before attempting to run such code or integrate it into an existing project, it is paramount to thoroughly check what actions are performed by it."The development comes as Bitdefender revealed that scammers are exploiting major e-sports tournaments like IEM Katowice 2025 and PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 to target players of the popular video game Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) with the intent to defraud them."By hijacking YouTube accounts to impersonate professional players like s1mple, NiKo, and donk, cybercriminals are luring fans into fraudulent CS2 skin giveaways that result in stolen Steam accounts, cryptocurrency theft, and the loss of valuable in-game items," the Romanian cybersecurity company said.Found this article interesting? • How DOGE May Impact Tech
    www.informationweek.com
Lisa Morgan, Freelance WriterFebruary 25, 20254 Min ReadAndrii Yalanskyi via Alamy StockGovernment inefficiency has been a long-term gripe in America. Seemingly to the rescue is the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk. DOGE is moving rapidly to cut costs, by eliminating some organizations, like USAID, entirely and slashing the workforce of others. Though many lawsuits have been filed to stop the slashing and burning, DOGE continues, setting its sights on optimizing federal agencies. These moves will likely affect tech sales and contracts, as well as the relationships between federal agencies and tech vendors. DOGE is also siphoning highly-sensitive information from various federal organizations that could compromise individuals, and potentially, the entire country. The speed with which Musk and his team are moving to extract information from sensitive government databases and affect longstanding government programs is unprecedented and potentially illegal. We still dont know the policy implications, says Rita McGrath, Columbia University Business School professor and C-suite strategist, in an email interview. We can expect disruptions in what would otherwise be normal procurement, contracting and payment processes.Bills will not get paid in a timely way and with dismissals and employee buyouts on the horizon, a government already hard-pressed to provide essential services is going to function even less well.Related:Relative to the size of the US population and economy, the federal workforce has been in decline since the Reagan administration basically declared war on it, she says. The doctrine that high-functioning, effective government is worth making investments in, that followed the post-World War II golden age has largely disappeared and the workforce remaining is often overworked and frustrated at accomplishing even basic tasks in a timely way, says McGrath. Government procurement processes are already glacially slow and complex, which means that larger firms with staffs that can cope tend to have an advantage in government procurement.Whether Musks team will be able to override traditional protections against theft of government resources in the name of efficiency is an open question. It really comes down to whether institutional rules will intervene, says McGrath. There is, however, likely to be a permanent shift in how services, such as consulting, are being managed. Weve already seen a shift in demand for management consulting and legal services to depart from a time-based model to more of a value-based model, which would have huge implications for the billing structures and organizational forms of these [companies] from a leverage model to some kind of outcome-focused approach. Were watching it as a potential inflection point very closely.Related:Ben Walker, CEO at transcription services provider Ditto, says DOGE budget cuts will probably cause federal agencies to be more cautious about tech purchases and consulting contracts, which could lead to longer procurement cycles and stricter requirements for vendors. To adapt, my company is looking at offering flexible contract structures and more ways to provide long-term value. Strong performance and trust will matter more than ever as agencies justify their spending, says Walker in an email interview. One way to think of it is that the federal government is becoming more like a private-sector company. Agencies may demand clearer return-on-investment metrics and push for performance-based contracts. Vendors that can clearly articulate the necessity and efficiency of their services will have an edge.Tips to Weather the StormColumbia Universitys McGrath believes enterprises should do several things to protect themselves. For example, its important to have cash on hand. You dont want to be caught in a cash flow crunch if suddenly your invoices arent getting paid. So, work proactively with your bank or other customers to make sure you have some buffers in the bank, says McGrath. Also lean into existing relationships to better understand the potential impacts.[T]his will be a scary time for those under the microscope by DOGE and it could be an opportunity to both learn whats going on and deepen trust in existing relationships, says McGrath. Connect with peers -- perhaps lightning check ins -- to keep on top of what is really going on.Something like a daily call where you share information about what youre learning and what they are learning could be helpful. And finally, dont assume that business as usual will return any time soon. Following the USAID purge, agencies that have existed for many decades are facing instant changes that will disrupt their operations. Processes, however efficient or inefficient, will change and tech companies need to be prepared for the financial impacts.Bottom line, proceed with eyes wide open and caution, and embrace scenario planning. Such efforts helped organizations weather the whipsaw effects of the pandemic. Such scenario planning is even more important at a time when virtually anything can happen, especially under a cloak of opacity. Its also important to nurture current relationships and to monitor how procurement processes and requirements are changing. Once again, agility will be critical to navigating the changes.About the AuthorLisa MorganFreelance WriterLisa Morgan is a freelance writer who covers business and IT strategy and emergingtechnology for InformationWeek.
