  • The people in Elon Musks DOGE universe
    techcrunch.com
Elon Musk has spent decades building a universe of companies that has served as an incubator for up-and-coming engineers and a proving ground for his inner circle. That universe an ecosystem of Silicon Valley tech titans, veterans of his companies like Tesla and SpaceX, and a crop of fresh-faced hackers and software engineers has now collided with the U.S. federal government. The dozens of individuals who work under, or advise, Musk and the Trump-ordered Department of Government Efficiency individuals who TechCrunch has identified or confirmed independently reflects more than the billionaires proclivity to collect talent. They are a real-life illustration of Musks web-like reach in the tech industry.TechCrunch set out to report on or confirm the individuals working as Musk representatives in the U.S. government. Importantly, weve sought to show the connections between them, and how and when they entered Musks orbit. Along the way, TechCrunch has made some new discoveries, including new details about DOGE and its workers and an xAI-powered chatbot on a DOGE-related website subdomain that is hosted on a Musk acolytes website. How we got hereTechCrunch interviewed people who have worked with Musk and DOGE staffers. We used public and open source data, such as historical internet records and chat logs, to confirm parts of our reporting. We also relied on services like the Internet Archives Wayback Machine to access archived copies of websites that are no longer online. Public information, such as court records, payments transactions, other media reports, and past TechCrunch reporting were also used.TechCrunch reached out to all those named for an opportunity to comment. For those whose contact information we did not have, TechCrunch contacted known representatives, including the Trump administration. When reached for comment, a White House spokesperson provided a statement to TechCrunch. (The spokesperson sent the email on background, but we are publishing in full as we were given no opportunity to decline the terms.)DOGE is fulfilling President Trumps commitment to making government more accountable, efficient, and, most importantly, restoring proper stewardship of the American taxpayers hard-earned dollars. Those leading this mission with Elon Musk are doing so in full compliance with federal law, appropriate security clearances, and as employees of the relevant agencies, not as outside advisors or entities. The ongoing operations of DOGE may be seen as disruptive by those entrenched in the federal bureaucracy, who resist change. While change can be uncomfortable, it is necessary and aligns with the mandate supported by more than 77 million American voters, the statement read. This is a living document, as the DOGE teamIf you know more about DOGE, contact TechCrunch securely. You can also share documents via SecureDrop.Inner circleElon MuskRole: DOGE Lead, Unpaid Special Government EmployeeGravitas. Obsession. Ambition. Risk-taker.Elon Musk observers and sycophants have pointed to these traits to explain his rise from a bright-eyed immigrant landing in the United States to one of the worlds richest and most powerful people, and now a right-hand to President Donald Trump. The overlooked secret sauce is Musks ability to get talented people to sign on to the mission. That there are multiple, overlapping, and evolving missions saving the planet through sustainable transport and energy, solving traffic, making humanity multiplanetary, or protecting public conversation doesnt really matter. The biggest carrot was, and has always been, Musks us versus them framing, according to five sources who had lengthy stints at Tesla and spoke to TechCrunch on condition of anonymity. In the past, the them might be local regulators, the press, or legacy automakers. Today, the people working closely with Musk to complete his next mission via the Department of Government Efficiency have a new them to battle: waste and bureaucrats.Musk has talked at length about government agencies that should be deleted entirely. Meanwhile, Musks companies have benefited from government contracts and incentives. His company SpaceX has been awarded more than $20 billion in contracts from NASA, the Department of Defense, and other federal agencies, according to data from USASpending.gov.Musk is an unpaid special government employee, according to the White House. Per a filing on February 17, the Trump administration said Musk is a White House employee and a senior advisor to the president. According to the Trump administrations executive order, DOGE is a temporary government organization whose authorities are set to expire in July 2026.(back to top)Steve DavisRole: Long-time Musk insiderSteve Davis is a long-time Musk confidant. He began working at SpaceX as one of its earliest employees in 2003 after earning a masters degree in aerospace engineering from Stanford University, according to the Los Angeles Times.By 2016, Musk tapped Davis to run what at the time was his newest far-fetched idea: An underground transit play known as The Boring Company. On his watch, The Boring Company raised hundreds of millions of dollars and built a few short so-called Tesla tunnels in Las Vegas. But the company has also ended up dropping its previously announced plans for tunnels in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, according to The Wall Street Journal.Davis has a reputation as a relentless negotiator, and Musk brought him on board at Twitter to help with the takeover and subsequent slash-and-burn. Davis and his family reportedly slept in a makeshift bedroom at the companys headquarters during this time. In a 2023 lawsuit against Twitter filed by former employees, the plaintiffs alleged that Davis said to the effect of, we dont have to follow those rules, in response to a request to get permits to install a bathroom for Musk.Davis has served as a member of the board of advisors of the Atlas Society, a group centered around the philosophy of Ayn Rand, per Bloomberg. Davis is now helping Musk slash government headcount, which Rand once called the worst part of the producers burden.(back to top)Nicole HollanderRole: X employeeNicole Hollander garnered public attention in the aftermath of Elon Musks $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in early 2022.The George Washington University alum and former employee of real estate developer JGB Smith (per her LinkedIn profile) was part of the polarizing Twitter transition team that upended the company and slashed its workforce. As part of that transition, Hollander and Musk ally Steve Davis moved into the companys headquarters with their infant, according to a civil lawsuit filed in 2023. The lawsuit was filed by several former Twitter employees against X Corp., the Musk entity that took over. The plaintiffs said in the complaint Hollander was not employed by any of Musks companies at that time.Hollanders relationship with Davis and her current employment at X has kept her in Musks circle. Her role at DOGE doesnt have an official title, at least one that is public. However, Wired reported in late January that Hollander has high-level access to federal agencies and an official government email address.(back to top)Brian BjeldeRole: Senior Advisor, Office of Personnel ManagementBrian Bjelde is a true Elon Musk veteran, with 21 years at SpaceX, where he was employee No. 14 and continues to work today. According to the complaint, Bjelde once starred in a video for the space company where a staffer spanked him an apparent attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor and he also was involved in the firings of several employees who spoke up about the companys culture in 2022.Prior to SpaceX, Bjelde spent a year at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory after graduating from the University of Southern California with a masters degree in astronautical engineering. At DOGE, Bjelde is reportedly a senior advisor at OPM.(back to top)Amanda ScalesRole: Chief of Staff, Office of Personnel ManagementAmanda Scales doesnt directly work for DOGE, but is now chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management, the federal governments main human resources department, according to an OPM memo.Scales used to work on talent acquisition at Musks company x.AI until January 2025, according to her LinkedIn profile. In 2018, Balajadia took over the executive assistant to the office of CEO position, a role that included managing all of Musks activities and often those of his family members, according to interactions between a TechCrunch reporter and SpaceX and Musk employees at the time. Today, Balajadia has a role within DOGE. According to The New York Times, she is listed in the employee directory of the Education Department. The book Breaking Twitter claims Balajadia once told another Musk official that her job was to take care of him, and she reportedly often travels with Musk. Stanley himself has hinted at working in the Trump administration on his X account. On January 20, the day of Trumps inauguration, Stanley posed next to two January 6 convicts, brothers Matthew and Andrew Valentin, who were pardoned by Trump. In Brody, Ukraine, CannonDesign and Pelli Clarke & Partners are ideating a new modular childrens hospital, together with Sunflower Network, a nonprofit. The project announcement came just ahead of the third anniversary of Russias full-scale invasion. The location where the future childrens hospital will be sited is about 1.5 hours northeast of Lviv, a city in western Ukraine. It will also support the greater Lviv region more broadly, which has a population of about 5 million people. Thanks to its proximity to the Kyiv-to-Europe highway (E40), it will likewise serve patients from eastern Ukraine.Northwell Health is a development partner, along with other local architects and builders. The childrens hospital is modular, and can be replicated in other parts of the country. Its designed to meet benchmarks set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Union (EU). Tragically, the project is a timely one. According to the design team, the existing childrens hospital in Brody has seen a 100 percent uptick in patients since the full-scale invasion started. Today, theres urgent demand for more capacity. CannonDesign noted that its approach can be aptly called trauma-informed architecture. The importance of trauma-informed design, especially when designing for children, cannot be overstated, Elisabeth Perreault, CannonDesigns health principal and project lead, said in a statement. By creating spaces that foster psychological and physical safety, we aim to restore hope and help Ukrainians in their journey toward recovery. Most of the hospital will be built off-site, and then transported to Brody, cutting time and costs. CannonDesign is conceiving the modular hospital through its internal public-interest design practice, Open Hand Studio, in partnership with Pelli Clarke & Partners, and local Ukrainian design and construction firms. Renderings of the hospital show a low-lying, single story structure assembled with metal panels, replete with a portico roof that extends out from the building. Sunflower Network is approaching the hospital project as phase one of a larger effort to rebuild Ukraines healthcare infrastructure, a program Sunflower Network CEO Dustin Ross calls Project Horizon. We cannot wait for the war to be over. We need to make positive impact now, added Ross, whose nonprofit has since raised $4.5 million in funding for life-saving initiatives across Ukraine. Our deep local relationships will couple with our global coalition of experts to make positive headway immediately and create a model for revitalizing Ukraines healthcare system for generations to come. The project is still $3 million away from its funding goal.Donations can be made directly to Sunflower Network through this link.

  • The Peoples Graphic Design Archive makes all 13 issues of Mimi Zeigers influential architecture zine, loud paper, available online
    www.archpaper.com
Following a residency at Stairwell Los Angeles, all 13 issues of loud papera Los Angelesbased architecture zine dedicated to increasing the volume of architectural discourse, published by Mimi Zeiger over an 11-year periodare now freely accessible online at the Peoples Graphic Design Archive (PGDA). Louise Sandhaus, a co-director of the PGDA, told AN that she envisioned the crowd-sourced virtual archive, which exhibits more than 10,000 graphic design documents, as a platform for showing the expansiveness of cultural representations, with the intention of hopefully inspiring people to not feel pinned down in any certain orientation or aesthetic. Sandhaus reflected back on it as an online resource as easy to use as Wikipedia or Fontsinuse, a typography-based archive.Loud paper fits into the ethos as a demonstration of late 1990s and early 2000s collage-style graphic design, heavily inspired by some of the greats of the era, including April Grieman, one of Zeigers former instructors at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Looking back on them now as graphic objects, she explained, they seem so of their time in a way that makes them useful within a graphic design history, as representative of some of the influences, whether that was other publications like Wet or Emma Gray, or even the work coming out of something like Wallpaper. The graphic treatment of text, images, and their interrelationships visible across the staples of every page are, indeed, loud.In addition to the 13 issues, the scans include a poster advertising the first call for submissions seeking work from students, architects, educators, girls about town, dear Johns, and critics. (CourtesyPeoples Graphic Design Archive)Zeiger, an independent writer, curator, and former West Coast editor of The Architects Newspaper, published the first issue by hand as a graduate student at SCI-Arc in 1997. Using the school Xerox machine, she hand-bound each copy and even hand-placed the inserts designed to elicit surprise to the hundreds of subscribers that flipped through its pages. The zine came out of a punk scene ethos, Zeiger explained over Zoom. I had been reading up on that ethos while also trying to practice it by making loud paper what we would now call open source to counteract some of the barriers to entry that I saw within the architecture profession, keeping out young writers and emerging architects, who didnt really have another place to express themselves. The first page of the first issue announces that the zine is an outgrowth of a frustration caused by the stagnation of ordinary forms of architectural dialogue, designed to challenge the failed systems of glossy trade magazines which solely publish the big gun architects and academic journals which maintain the elitism of an overly intellectual language and the slowness of book publication. By a serendipitous illustration of her cause, loud paper came out the same year that the Bilbao Effect was born, following the completion of Frank Gehrys Guggenheim Museum Bilbao that would don the cover of virtually every glossy trade magazine in 1997.In addition to musings and confessions by various authors, nearly every issue featured a book review unfettered by the unspoken limitations imposed on larger magazines, offering unflinching takes on the significant works of the time, including Anthony Vidlers Warped Space and Joan Ockmans Out of Ground Zero. The zine acted as this filter for people who just kind of got it. We didnt have to say too much, and it became this really interesting mix of voices. Zeiger recently scanned the majority of documents related to loud paper as part of her residency at Stairwell, following one of two public events held last Novembertitled Reflections on Ephemera: Zine Culture, Materiality, and the Archivewhich brought her in a conversation with Sandhaus moderated by Wendy Gilmartin. In addition to the 13 issues, the scans include a poster advertising the first call for submissions seeking work from students, architects, educators, girls about town, dear Johns, and critics.Loud paper fits into the ethos as a demonstration of late 1990s and early 2000s collage-style graphic design. (Courtesy Peoples Graphic Design Archive)Each issue of loud paper brought together a mix of familiar names and characters that seem to have fallen off the map. What is so surprising to me, said Zeiger, is who found the call for submissions and how they have moved on in their careers to be a cohort of established voices in the field that became a whos-who, including Eric Hweler, Jennifer Gabrys, and Sam Jacob (who apparently published his first-ever piece in the zine). And then theres folks like Bobby Young. Young wrote a popular essay on skateboarding, and I have since gotten many emails asking for more information about him and ways to get in touch with him. But I still cannot contact this guy. His email has long gone cold, Zeiger said.In a culture still dominated by glossy trade magazines with the added chatter of digital media that algorithmically amplifies some voices over others, we can only hope to develop more platforms for the Bobby Youngs of this generation.Shane Reiner-Roth is a writer and lecturer on architecture and urbanism.

  • What are GFCI outlets? Plus 6 things you should never plug into one
    www.zdnet.com
While GFCI outlets offer reliable protection compared with standard outlets, they aren't meant for every type of electrical device. Some items should never be plugged into a GFCI, as they could malfunction or trip the circuit unnecessarily, leading to power disruptions or unsafe situations. Below is a list of devices not suited for GFCIs.1. Devices with a "high inrush" currentAppliances likerefrigerators, freezers, air conditioner units, andpower toolsrequire a serious initial burst of electricity when powered on. Yes, even though refrigerators are almost always located in kitchens, the counterintuitive truth is that they can cause the GFCI to trip because of the large initial surge of current, even if there is no actual fault. This is known as "nuisance tripping," and it is aptly named. Don't risk spoiling a fridge full of foods by plugging it into a GFCI.2. Outdoor equipmentSimilarly, outdoor equipment such aselectric lawnmowersorpressure washersshould ideally be plugged into a dedicated outdoor outlet. While GFCIs are designed for outdoor use to reduce shock hazards, high-powered equipment can cause the GFCI to trip if it draws too much current at one time. Also:The best home EV chargers of 2025: Expert tested3. High-powered appliancesAppliances that use significant power, such asspace heaters, microwave ovens, orvacuum cleaners, can cause a GFCI outlet to trip, especially if they are used on a circuit with high loads. These appliances could create a situation where the GFCI trips frequently (more nuisance tripping).4. Surge protectors or power stripsSomepower stripsandsurge protectors, particularly those with multiple plugs for high-powered devices, could cause the GFCI outlet to trip due to the combined electrical load. A sudden power surge or imbalance could cause the GFCI to trip unexpectedly, defeating the GFCI outlet's purpose and causing repeated circuit tripping.5. Sump pumpsWhile theNational Electrical Code (NEC)specifically mandates that new construction includes GFCIs in basements, there is another ironic exclusion among the list:sump pumps. Sump pumps are designed to prevent flooding, but if the GFCI trips and cuts off its power, your basement might end up under several inches of water. Also:How I used this portable power station to bring electricity to a caveman6. Medical equipmentMedical equipment likeCPAP machinesandoxygen concentratorsrequire continuous, uninterrupted power, so we advise plugging these vital devices into conventional outlets, not GFCIs. Some medical devices have sensitive circuitry, and the GFCI may trip unnecessarily, causing a loss of power to life-sustaining equipment.

  • 2 Subtle Ways Gatekeeping Impacts Our LivesBy A Psychologist
    www.forbes.com
We can directly influence the amount of information we access and share, both in our personal lives ... [+] and with others. Heres why gatekeeping often becomes exclusionary.gettyEvery day, were bombarded with messagesnews updates, social media posts, emails and conversations. But have you ever stopped to think about how much information never actually reaches you? Whether in personal communication or mass media, what we see and hear is carefully filtered through a process known as gatekeeping.Gatekeeping is the practice of controlling access to information, opportunities and resources. It decides what gets shared, who gets heard and ultimately, who holds power. From journalists and editors shaping news narratives to algorithms curating our social media feeds, gatekeepers play a crucial role in what information makes it to usand what gets left out.Interestingly enough, we may all engage in gatekeeping, often without realizing it. It can be helpful, like when a CEOs assistant filters out unnecessary meetings so they can focus on critical decisions. In this case, gatekeeping keeps things running smoothly.Yet, gatekeeping can also create barriers. In academia, for example, knowledge is sometimes restricted by institutional gatekeepingwhether through elitism, limited access to resources or faculty who control what information gets shared with students. This can reinforce hierarchies and make it harder for some to access opportunities.Gatekeeping is embedded in our daily lives. It influences our relationships, careers and even how we see ourselves. Here are two ways gatekeeping shapes our personal and professional worlds.1. Tight-Knit Friendship Groups Create Barriers To EntryIn high schools, universities and even workplaces, its common to see tight-knit friend groups that share inside jokes, stick together and subtly (or not so subtly) decide who gets to be part of their inner circle. If you happen to share something with one of them, chances are the whole group will hear about it.These friend groups often establish unspoken rules about who belongs, acting as gatekeeperssometimes to maintain harmony, other times to exclude outsiders. On one hand, this can be positive. Strong friendships provide a sense of belonging, help shape identity and create a reliable support system. However, when gatekeeping turns rigid, it can lead to unhealthy dynamics think cliques, groupthink and social exclusion. Its not always a Mean Girls situation, but when barriers to entry become too strict, it could start to feel that way.The concept of friendship gatekeeping connects closely with the idea of the local bubble at universities. Just as tight-knit friend groups decide who gets to be part of their circle, local students at universities often stick with familiar social groups, making it harder for outsidersespecially international studentsto integrate. This unspoken social gatekeeping helps maintain the local bubble. Since many local students already have established friendships from school or their communities, they may not actively seek new relationships with international students.Similarly, international students, sensing this barrier, often form their own social circles, reinforcing the international bubble. This could lead both to miss out on valuable cross-cultural learning and friendships.2. Leaders Shape Careers Through GatekeepingIn any workplace, gatekeeping plays a crucial role in shaping careers. Leaders and managers decide who gets opportunities, promotions and mentorship. When done right, mentorship is a positive form of gatekeepingit guides and supports growth. Mentors share tools, resources and support to help mentees succeed and become better leaders.Essentially, leaders need to be open, available and accessible to employees. A 2021 study published in Group & Organization Management shows that inclusive leadership leads to positive effects on teamwork, commitment, psychological safety and innovation. It also boosts creativity, engagement and performance.Research shows that gatekeeping information in the workplace proves useful in internal projects where not everyone needs the same information, but for broader tasks, direct communication works better.Sometimes, gatekeeping can become a tool for control rather than empowerment. For example, a senior colleague might withhold key information from a newcomer, making it harder for them to navigate workplace systems or integrate smoothly. This can be an intentional power move, reinforcing hierarchies and slowing down someones progress. At its core, gatekeeping stems from our natural tendency to belong to a group and consequently define insiders and outsiders. While some boundaries are necessary for maintaining structure, excessive exclusivity can harm workplace culture. It can limit diversity, hinder collaboration and create an unwelcoming environment. Striking a balance between healthy boundaries and open access is essential for creating an inclusive and thriving workplace.Gatekeeping is everywherein our friendships, workplaces and even the information we access daily. Sometimes, it helps maintain order, protect our time and ensure the right people get the right opportunities. Other times, it creates unnecessary barriers, making people feel excluded or stuck. The challenge isnt to eliminate gatekeeping entirely, but to be more mindful of how we use it. Are we keeping things fair and open, or are we shutting people out? By being more inclusive in the way we share knowledge, opportunities and connections, we can create spaces where everyone has a chance to grow, belong and contribute.Does your workplace feel psychologically safe, or does gatekeeping threaten the peace? • Make Garmins Fenix 8 A Much Better Smartwatch With This Free App
    www.forbes.com
Garmin Fenix 8 Coming Up appAndrew WilliamsGarmin has released a new, free-to-download app than makes your health and fitness watch more useful as a smartwatch. It works on recent Fenix series watches, among many others. The app is called ComingUp, and lets you use your Garmin watch as a to-do list tracker. You can sync up with Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do or Todoist. That choice is the first thing youll see as you start up the app on your watch, and you can switch between them simply by scrolling down to the bottom of your to-do lists and selecting Switch List.Theres a solid level of two-way communication here too, even if Garmin watches arent nearly as always-connected as a phone. You can make changes to the lists right from the watch, adding new items as well as ticking off ones already listed.Coming Up app screen grabAndrew WilliamsI tried ComingUp using the Fenix 8 watch, which relies on the use of the touchscreen keyboard for anything more than just ticking off items. However, it is far from the only series supported by the new app. The Fenix 7 family, Forerunner 165, Forerunner 255, Forerunner 265 and new Instinct 3 are on the list, among others. The most notable part here is ComingUp is an app made, or at least published, by Garmin itself. It hasnt made all that many apps for Garmin Connect IQ, and the vast majority of its entries on the app store are watch faces.A handful of apps released over years thats it. Mecca Finder came to Connect IQ in 2024, while the last one I can remember paying much real attention too was the Handwashing app from 2020. Released just after the pandemic took hold, it was designed to help you make sure you wash your hands for long enough. While ComingUp is super-simple, made to work well across a wide span of devices and not just high-res touchscreen ones like the Fenix 8, it could be an indication of the direction in which Garmin devices are heading. For example, could Garmin be considering a return to watches with cellular connectivity? Garmins Forerunner 945 LTE from 2021 has mobile internet, subject to a $6.99 a month subscription. But we havent had anything similar since. It allows for live tracking (effectively live broadcasting) of your race events, and provides better safety features handy for hikers but also decimates the battery fairly swiftly in the Forerunner 945 LTE. Tracking stamina drops from 35 hours to seven hours. Its easier to imagine such connected smarts becoming a core part of the range once it doesnt affect real-world battery life quite as much, as we saw with Garmins roll-out of OLED display tech. For now, though, I recommend giving ComingUp a try if you have a passing interest in using lists to get organised or motivated.

  • Microsoft scales back AI data center expansion amid AI spending boom
    www.techspot.com
Cutting corners: Microsoft and all other Big Tech counterparts have been pouring billions into AI infrastructure, building massive data centers to fuel the next generation of artificial intelligence. However, new developments suggest the company may be reassessing the scale of its spending at least in some areas. According to investment firm TD Cowen, Microsoft has recently canceled leases for data center capacity in the U.S., amounting to several hundred megawatts roughly the equivalent of two large data centers. This move comes despite the company's previously announced plans to invest over $80 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure during its current fiscal year.Redmond could just have canceled its data center leases for very mundane, understandable reasons, so while the lease cancellations could just be "business as usual," they also raise broader questions about the sustainability of Big Tech's AI spending spree.Microsoft has reiterated that its overall investment strategy remains unchanged, with AI infrastructure expansion still a priority. A spokesperson confirmed that the company may "adjust spending in some areas" but emphasized that global infrastructure growth will continue to meet rising customer demand. Also see: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta push AI spending to new heights, set to surpass $320 billion this yearThe decision comes at a time when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has acknowledged the high costs of AI development. In a recent interview, Nadella admitted that while AI represents a transformative opportunity, the technology has yet to deliver significant value proportional to the massive capital being poured into it. He also cautioned that over-investing in AI infrastructure without clear returns could be risky, even for industry leaders like Microsoft.Microsoft's recalibration reflects a broader debate within the industry: How much should companies invest in AI when the long-term financial returns remain uncertain? The AI boom has pushed Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta to spend aggressively on data centers, semiconductor partnerships, and custom AI chips, but the path to profitability remains murky. // Related StoriesMeanwhile, OpenAI Microsoft's key AI partner has been seeking additional investors beyond Microsoft, including a potential partnership with Oracle and Softbank. This shift may be influencing Microsoft's infrastructure strategy, prompting it to evaluate where and how it deploys resources.Despite the lease cancellations, Microsoft's AI expansion remains on track, but its latest move signals a more measured approach to spending. As Nadella suggested, the real challenge for AI isn't just scaling up computing power but ensuring that supply and demand align in a way that creates meaningful value.
