  • More than 1 billion people are now watching podcasts on YouTube every month
    www.theverge.com
YouTube isnt a podcast app, but that hasnt stopped it from becoming the number one place people who want to consume online radio shows now turn to. According to the company, a staggering 1 billion people are tuning into podcasts every month on YouTube. Thats not just more than either Apple or Spotify can claim it utterly lays them to waste. In 2023, Spotify reported it had 100 million regular podcast listeners, and touted that half a billion people had listened to a podcast on its platform since 2019 when it started its push into the world of online radio shows. Apple tends to come out behind Spotify in third-party measurements. If a full eighth of the worlds population uses YouTube for podcasts, it seems like thats probably where the action is. Reaching that big chunk of audience takes extra work for podcasters, though. Listeners cant turn just off their phones screen to listen unless theyre paying for YouTube Premium, and people may not want to stare at a static image for an hour straight. That means doing video to really make it count.Making video for YouTube is far more expensive than it used to be. In a newsletter earlier this month, cooking creator Carla Lalli Music, formerly of Bon Apetit, said it cost her $3,500 to shoot a single video for the platform. Those were more complicated than a podcast video, but it still speaks to the platforms demand for quality in order to get off the ground. YouTube says that more than 400 million hours of podcasts were watched on TVs alone last year. Video clearly matters; creators cant just turn on their webcams and get results.Reaching YouTubes audience also means playing by YouTubes rules. The platform doesnt work with RSS feeds in the same way that most other podcast platforms do every podcast has to become a native YouTube video. That requires them to play by YouTubes ad rules, too, and use YouTubes ad systems. Podcasters cant serve ads the same way they do everywhere else, and they cant get the same metrics theyd normally use to sell advertisers on their reach and success.Still, that tradeoff has clearly been worth it to a great many creators, and YouTubes stats today show why. It may not be a traditional podcast platform, but its a big one that podcasters cant ignore.See More:

  • After Warner Bros. Shut Down Shadow of Mordor Developer Monolith and Canceled Wonder Woman, Fans Lament the 'Wasted Potential' of Its Nemesis System
    www.ign.com
Yesterdays shock news that Warner Bros. had shut down three studios and canceled its Wonder Woman game sent shockwaves throughout the industry and the gaming community at large. And as the dust settles on yet another devastating round of cuts, fans of Monolith Productions much-loved Nemesis System are lamenting its "wasted potential."The Nemesis System began life as part of Monoliths well-received 2014 action adventure game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. It fuels randomly named enemies in Sauron's army that are generated uniquely with each playthrough of the game. Each nemesis has their own personality and will rise or fall within their social structure as the game progresses. They are affected by protagonist Talion's actions, and each will react differently to Talion's incursion into Mordor, be it fight, flight, or some other reaction. With 2017 sequel Shadow of War, Monolith sought to improve upon its Nemesis system by increasing the variety of emergent stories and their emotional impact. Warner Bros. had confirmed the Nemesis System was set to return for Monoliths Wonder Woman game, although it was light on the details.Announced in December 2021 with a brief teaser trailer and description, Wonder Woman was a single-player action adventure set in a dynamic open-world in which players became Diana of Themyscira in an original story set within the DC universe. With Monoliths closure, only two games will have made use of the Nemesis system, a fact not lost on fans who are already pointing to the end of Warner Bros. vice-like grip on the Nemesis system patent."I don't understand one iota how WB handled this Nemesis System debacle," said redditor birminghamsterwheel. "Two games, the last being eight years ago, and nothing else? Not giving it to any of your other studios? Not licensing it out? WTF?"Warner Bros. only managed to secure the Nemesis System patent in 2021 after its application was filed in 2016, with an adjusted expiration of August 11, 2036.The patent, filed as Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games, effectively codifies the functions of Monoliths Nemesis system and the sum of its parts as the property of Warner Bros. While the language in the application is fairly obtuse as most patent claims tend to be the short version is that the patent covers a system featuring procedurally-generated NPCs that exist in a hierarchy and interact with and will remember the actions of players, have their appearance/behavior altered by players, and whose place in that hierarchy can change and affect the position of other NPCs in said hierarchy. It also covers the Social Conquest battles from Shadow of War, wherein players can fortify or attack one anothers strongholds to see how their army of orcs fares against their friends.Warner Bros. had tried to secure the patent for the system since 2015, but had to repeatedly revise and resubmit the application. Initial rejections claimed that there were too many similarities in the application to other patents, including those held by Square Enix, the mobile game QONQR, and even Webkinz, though more rejections were more focused on the specificity of language throughout the patent. The patent means any developer wishing to build a feature with all the aspects detailed in the patent (or at least enough to be considered infringement) would have to secure a license from Warner Bros.Developers are able to create similar systems that arent a 1:1 recreation of Monoliths program, however. The Mercenaries in Assassins Creed Odyssey or Watch Dogs Legions Census system are examples of dynamically-generated NPCs and social networks that were not met with a legal challenge. But what happens now? With no Monolith around to use the Nemesis system and its Wonder Woman game canceled, there are fears Warner Bros. Nemesis patent will simply act as a deterrent until 2036 and go unused for another decade. It wasnt just Monolith and Wonder Women that were cut. Warner Bros. also shut down MultiVersus developer Player First Games and WB San Diego. Heres Warner Bros. statement:We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them. The development of Monoliths Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monoliths storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond. These shutdowns continue a trend going back roughly three years of increasing games industry layoffs, project cancellations, and studio closures. In 2023 alone, it's estimated that over 10,000 game developers were laid off. That number shot up to over 14,000 in 2024, and while 2025 has seen numerous closures, the exact number of impacted individuals is hazier due to fewer companies reporting these layoffs and shutdowns, or specific numbers affected.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. • Doctor Who Series 15 Confirms Release Date and Returning Guest Star
    www.denofgeek.com
The Doctor Who series 15 teaser trailer shows an old-fashioned pug-nosed cartoon character terrifying the 1950s-styled audience by climbing out of a cinema screen. In Doctor Who Magazine 613, showrunner Russell T Davies teased the actor behind the character as an old friend of the show, guess who?!No guessing required, as the voice has been confirmed as that of actor, musicals star and presenter of The Traitors US Alan Cumming. Faithful viewers will know that Cumming appeared as a guest star during the Jodie Whittaker era, playing King James I in series 11s historical fantasy story The Witchfinders. In episode two of the new series, which is confirmed to start on BBC One and Disney+ on Saturday April 12 (with episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 8am in the UK ahead of broadcast that evening) Cumming voices the character of Mr Ring-a-Ding. Hes described as a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside, and the consequences are terrifying.Cumming joins fellow series 15 guest stars Rose Ayling-Ellis, previously of EastEnders, Ludwig, and a former Strictly Come Dancing winner who was once rumoured to be the Doctors new companion before Millie Gibson was announced. RTD teased her episode in DWM 613, writing that Rose takes it to a whole new level. She storms in with an astonishing performance of terror, anger and bravery in one of the most frightening episodes weve ever madeConfirmed last week, Australian actor Christopher Chung, best known over here for playing genius hacker and overall pillock Roddy Ho in Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses, will also appear in the new episodes as a Trooper character named Cassio Palin. And weve known for a while now that The Little Mermaids Eric, aka Jonah Hauer-King, will be part of the series opener alongside Millie Gibson.Returning cast members include, of course, Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, plus new companion Belind Chandra played by Varada Sethu. Theyll be joined by Anita Dobson as the mysterious Mrs Flood, Michelle Greenidge as Rubys mother Carla, Ruth Madeley as UNIT scientist Shirley Anne Bingham, Jemma Redgrave as UNIT boss Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Susan Twist as, presumably, tech magnate Susan Triad.Remind yourself of the teaser trailer below:Doctor Who series 15/season 2 starts on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and on Disney+ around the world, on Saturday April 12, 2025.

  • AI app that transcribes without recording audio or video promises to safeguard your privacy
    thenextweb.com
An AI-powered note-taking app developed by Munich-based startup Bliro could offer a more secure way to transcribe audio.Bliro uses natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to extract relevant information from in-person or virtual conversations. It then generates structured meeting notes and automates follow-up tasks. So far, pretty standard. However, unlike popular transcription tools like Otter, Fireflies, or Notta, Bliro isnt a bot that hops onto your call, records an audio file, and then transcribes it. Instead, the platform transcribes in real-time, ensuring that no audio recordings of conversations are ever created. This guarantees compliance with strict privacy and security requirements like GDPR, the company said. That also means you dont need the other partys consent to record, streamlining the note-taking process.Register NowMaurice Schweitzer, Bliros co-founder, told TNW that the approach eliminates risks associated with audio and video recordings.A transcript lacks personally identifiable elements like voice or facial recognition, making it impossible to verify who said what with absolute certainty, he said. For those transcripts that do contain personal information like names, the company prioritises compliance at every step, Schweitzer added.Schweitzer co-founded Bliro in 2022 alongside data scientist Martin Thoma, as a privacy-first transcription tool, spun out from AI research at the Technical University of Munich. In addition to eschewing the recording process, Bliro encrypts all data processed in the app and stores it on servers in Frankfurt. It does not share data with third parties, including its own employees, without explicit consent. Nor does it use user data to refine its AI models, the company said. Many large companies avoid recording-based solutions due to privacy and compliance concerns making Bliro the only viable option for them, said Schweitzer.Bliro targets customer-facing teams who use the app to automate meeting transcriptions, generate AI-driven summaries, and create follow-up actions while maintaining privacy and compliance. The app currently supports 15 languages.Today, Bliro announced it has raised 2.8mn in a funding round led by German early-stage VC LEA Partners, with participation from 468 Capital and Dutch seed investor Rockstart. Bliro also launched its iOS app, which transcribes and analyses face-to-face conversations. The new funding will be used to accelerate product development and win more customers. Schweitzer said more than 1,000 companies already use Bliro, including well-known German brands such as ImmoScout24, OMR, and Telefnica Germany. • Max Planck spinout unveils worlds most viable fusion reactor design and only needs 6 years to build it
    thenextweb.com
German startup Proxima Fusion whose team includes engineers from MIT, Google, SpaceX, and McLaren has unveiled a fusion energy reactor design it believes offers the quickest route to commercially viable fusion power.Dubbed Stellaris, the machine is a quasi-isodynamic (QI) stellarator with high-temperature superconducting (HTS). This type of reactor uses complex, twisted magnetic fields to confine hot plasma, creating the conditions needed for fusion reactions.Stellaris is designed to operate in continuous mode and be intrinsically stable, Francesco Sciortino, Proximas co-founder and CEO, told TNW. No other fusion power plant design has yet been demonstrated to be capable of that. Stellaris design builds on the Wendelstein 7-X, the worlds largest stellarator, located at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Germany. While Wendelstein 7-X was developed for research, Stellaris could one day power the grid. The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!Proxima aims to bring the design to life with its first demonstrator Alpha slated for completion in just six years. Alpha will be the first-ever fusion device demonstrating net energy production in a steady state, said Sciortino. The machine will lay the foundation for Proximas first 1GW fusion reactor, which the company hopes will power up sometime in the 2030s.Stellarators have several advantages over their more popular cousin, the tokamak (the type adopted by ITER mega project under construction in France). They need less power to operate and are more stable. Their biggest drawback is complexity stellarators are notoriously hard to design and build. This is why they were largely set aside in the 1960s for the tokamak. However, advances in computational power are closing the gap.An AI-enabled fusion reactor designSimilar to other industries like automotive or aerospace, Proxima uses AI supercomputers to rapidly iterate the best fusion reactor designs based on key parameters like cost, material availability, and efficiency. So instead of having to build multiple prototypes, Proxima can jump straight into building a functioning demonstrator. The understanding of complex geometry and its consequences is everything in stellarators, said Sciortino. AI is helping Proxima to uncover patterns that lead to simpler, faster, and cheaper designs.Stellaris is designed to generate more power per unit volume than any previous stellarator. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets create stronger magnetic fields, allowing for smaller, faster-to-build, and more efficient reactors. This approach also reduces costs in both construction and operation. Stellaris uses only existing materials, making it buildable with todays supply chains, the company said. Full details of the reactor were published today in the journal Fusion Engineering and Design. The renders of Stellaris feature a unique twisting design. Credit: Proxima FusionMunich-based Proxima made history in 2023 as the first company to spin out from the esteemed Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, one of the worlds leading fusion research centres. The institute focuses exclusively on fusion and has more plasma physicists than MIT.Proxima raised 20mn in funding last year as it looks to turn the mind-bending physics of fusion into a viable business. When Proxima started its journey, the founders said, This is possible, well prove it to you, and they did, said Ian Hogarth, a partner at Plural, one of Proxima Fusions earliest investors. Stellaris positions QI-HTS stellarators as the leading technology in the global race to commercial fusion. Story by Sin Geschwindt Sin is a climate and energy reporter at TNW. • Brits unmoved by loss of Advanced Data Protection and Apple needs to change that
    9to5mac.com
In a world in which privacy is a hot-button issue, we might have expected Brits to be outraged that their government was responsible for Apple withdrawing Advanced Data Protection from the UK. In reality, its gone largely unremarked. A new Bloomberg piece suggests thats because people care far less about privacy than they claim. While I do think theres some truth to that, its not the primary reason What is Advanced Data Protection? To start from the beginning for non-techies, there are two primary forms of encryption. In standard encryption, the company storing the data holds a copy of your encryption key, so if a government comes along and demands that it hand over your data, the company can do so.With strong encryption, aka end-to-end encryption (E2EE), only your devices hold the key. If a government asks Apple to hand over copies of your iMessages, for example, it cannot do so because the company doesnt have the key needed to decrypt them.Apple has historically used a mix of weak and strong encryption, but Advanced Data Protection (ADP) allows you to switch on E2EE for almost all of your data. Apple introduced this as an option just over two years ago. You can learn more in our video explainer below.Brits losing ADPThe British government wasnt very happy about ADP, and demanded that Apple build a backdoor into iCloud not just for the personal data of British citizens, but for all iCloud users worldwide. As we noted at the time, we knew from Apples past behavior that it was never going to agree to this.Sure enough, the company refused, stating that it would instead withdraw access to ADP for UK customers. This took immediate effect for those not yet using it, who are now unable to toggle it on, while existing users have been told well have to switch it off at some point or lose access to iCloud.Everything you need to know about Apples changes to encryption in the UKBloomberg suggests Brits dont careDespite what I described as an outrageous move, theres been remarkably little fuss about it in either UK media or on social media. Bloombergs Parmy Olson suggests this is because people dont care as much about privacy as they claim.Theres been little pushback, much less uproar, from the Brits about Apples policy change. The [] muted response suggests something troubling for Apple: Customers dont care about privacy as much as the company thinks. The so-called privacy paradox, well-documented inacademic research, refers to the gap between the concerns people say they have about their data and what they actually do about it.I do think there is some degree of truth to this. There is certainly evidence that people will sacrifice privacy to get or retain access to products and services they like. But its mostly that people dont understand this stuffBut the main reason theres been little fuss about the loss of ADP in the UK isnt that people dont care about the loss of privacy, but because they didnt even know the feature existed.Apple kept it toggled off by default, and thats for understandable reasons. When Apple holds a copy of your encryption key, it can help you regain access to your data if you forget your iCloud password even if you didnt set up a recovery option. If you use ADP, then Apple wont be able to help because it doesnt have access. But because ADP needs to be manually enabled, theres no reason a non-techy user would even have heard about it. Even Olson a technology journalist for Bloomberg seemingly wasnt using it herself.Im an iCloud customer myself, and trying to activate the feature now leads to [the error] message. The lack of outrage isnt surprising, but does matterSo the lack of outrage isnt surprising. Most people dont know the difference between weak and strong encryption, had never heard of ADP, and dont have it enabled. But it does matter. The UK is hardly the only country to want backdoor access to our data, and when other governments see the lack of fuss over this, they are likely to make the same demand so that Apple is forced to switch off ADP in their country too. That most certainly includes the US.If Apple wants to head that one off at the pass, it needs to make this a major issue. Brief mainstream media on exactly what all this stuff means, and why it matters. Generate (justifiable) outrage in the UK to deter other governments from doing the same thing. It will be much easier for Apple to fight for ADP in the US if its customers already know what it is, why they should be using it, and have it enabled.
