Apple announced in a whitepaper that it plans to introduce a bunch of new child safety features, including letting parents share their kids age ranges with apps, refreshing the App Stores age ratings system, and making it easier for parents to set up Child Accounts for their kids. The company says it will introduce the features this year.Companies like Meta, Snap, and X have called for platforms to be responsible for verifying the ages of users at the OS or app store level. Apple also reportedly lobbied against a proposed bill in Louisiana that would have required the company to enforce age restrictions.In the whitepaper, Apple argues that age verification at the app marketplace level wouldnt be ideal, as it would require users to hand over sensitive personally identifying information to the company. Thats not in the interest of user safety or privacy, Apple says. The age sharing system gestures in that direction without going so far as to fully verify each users age. With the age range feature, parents can allow their kids to share the age range associated with their Child Accounts with app developers, Apple says.The age range will be shared with developers if and only if parents decide to allow this information to be shared, and parents will be able to disable sharing. The feature also wont provide kids actual birthdates. Developers will be able to request the age ranges with a new API that Apple says is a narrowly tailored, data-minimizing, privacy-protecting tool to assist app developers who can benefit from it.Todays announcement is a positive first step, however, developers can only apply these age-appropriate protections with a teens approval, Meta spokesperson Jamie Radice says in a statement to The Verge. Parents tell us they want to have the final say over the apps their teens use, and thats why we support legislation that requires app stores to verify a childs age and get a parents approval before their child downloads an app.As for App Store ratings will expand from four thresholds to five; the new categories will be Age 4 plus, 9 plus, 13 plus, 16 plus, and 18 plus. Reinforcement learning (RL) has been a core component in training large language models (LLMs) to perform tasks that involve reasoning, particularly mathematical problem-solving. A considerable inefficiency occurs during training, including a situation where many questions are always answered or left unsolved. The lack of variability in success rates is to blame for inefficient learning results because questions that do not yield a gradient signal do not allow the models performance to be improved. Traditional RL-based fine-tuning strategies are susceptible to expensive computational costs, increased energy usage, and inefficient use of resources. Correcting this is necessary to improve training efficiency and make language models learn from problems that greatly improve their reasoning.The standard training regimen of large language models (LLMs) uses policy gradient techniques, such as Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), in which models engage with each query repeatedly and corrections are applied based on signs of success or failure. One of the greatest drawbacks of this approach, however, is that the majority of training examples belong to clusters of extremeseither always correct or always incorrect. When an example is always solved correctly, repeated attempts do not provide further learning information. On the contrary, an impossible query provides no feedback for improvement. As a result, precious computational resources are wasted on useless training scenarios. Different curriculum-learning techniques, such as Unsupervised Environment Design (UED), have attempted to dynamically control training difficulty. These techniques, however, rely on heuristics such as regret-based selection, which are largely insufficient in anticipating optimal problem difficulty and fail to generalize well to reasoning tasks relevant to LLM training.To address this inefficiency, a novel training policy has been suggested and proposed that focuses on samples with high variance of success rates, thus forcing models to focus on questions not too easy and not too difficult. By identifying and choosing issues where the model performs erratically, the approach concentrates training on scenarios that provide the most informative learning signals. Differing from previous policies that utilized random sampling to train batches, this systematic selection method enhances update efficiency by eliminating problems that do not allow significant improvement. The procedure adapts during training, continuously optimizing question selection to track the fluctuating strength of the model. By targeting instances of moderate difficulty, the approach enables better learning and better generalization to novel tasks.The structured selection process operates through a multi-step pipeline that begins with the identification of candidate questions at each training iteration. Multiple rollouts are generated to assess the probability of success for each problem, and the variance of these success rates is computed using the function ( 1 ), where represents the likelihood of a correct solution. The most learnable questions with moderate success probabilities are prioritized and stored in a dynamic buffer. Training batches are then formed by selecting a combination of high-variance problems from this buffer and additional randomly sampled examples from the dataset. This carefully crafted batch is then utilized to calculate policy gradients and update the model parameters. The efficacy of this strategy is validated by applying two reinforcement learning algorithms, PPO and VinePPO, to two mathematical reasoning datasets: MATH, comprising 12,000 competition-level problems, and GSM8K, comprising 8,000-grade school-level questions. Additional tests are performed on the CollegeMath and OlympiadBench datasets to quantify the generalization capabilities outside the original training distribution. The entire framework combines VinePPO with smooth optimizations such as gradient accumulation, multi-rollout estimation, and Deepspeed ZeRO to offer scalable performance.The learning-driven selection mechanism greatly improves both the speed and efficiency of model training. Models trained with this curriculum are as accurate as models trained with traditional methods in roughly four times fewer training steps, with a remarkable improvement in convergence rates. Performance improves consistently through several datasets, with better test accuracy on GSM8K and MATH. The structured curriculum also generalizes to out-of-distribution tasks, with better generalization to datasets like CollegeMath and OlympiadBench. Training batch composition is optimized by eliminating questions with zero learning signal, leading to more efficient training. The approach is also found to be computationally beneficial, as sample generation can be scaled efficiently without redundant model updates. The combination of faster convergence, better generalization, and lower computational overhead makes this adaptive learning process a valuable and efficient tool for reinforcement learning-based LLM fine-tuning.A paradigm for high-variance learning opportunity target question selection effectively addresses the inefficiencies witnessed in language model fine-tuning based on reinforcement learning. Focusing on problems that produce the most informative training signals maximizes learning efficiency, achieving faster improvement and better adaptability with new samples. Large-scale experiments validate the strategy to be better in enhancing training speed, test accuracy, and generalization to more than one dataset. The findings highlight the promise of structured sample selection in model training refinement improvement and computational resource optimization. You may have seen messages on social media urging people not to buy anything at all on Friday, Feb. 28, as part of a protest. This isn't just your friends getting fed up with prices and corporations; it's an actual organized movement. Consumers are being urged not to spend any money, online or otherwise, for 24 hours, the entirety of Feb. 28.Boycott organizer John Schwarz told USA Today this week that he feels people are upset with corporate greed. He spoke more at length about the matter in aFeb. 18 Instagram video."For our entire lives, they have told us we have no choice ... that this is just how things are, we have to accept these insane prices, the corporate greed, the billionaire tax breaks, all while we struggle just to get by," Schwarz said in the video. "February 28, the 24-hour economic blackout: no Amazon, no Walmart, no fast food, no gas, not a single unnecessary dollar spent."Schwarz started an organization called The People's Union USA, which has expanded the protest to include boycotts of specific companies and on certain dates. It includes a boycott of Amazon on March 7-14, Nestle on March 21-28, Walmart on April 7-14 and a second one-day economic blackout on April 18.The People's Union USA presents itself as politically nonaligned. Its website states, "We are not Democrat, Republican, Independent, or any other party. We transcend political labels. We fight for fairness, economic justice, and real systemic change, something neither party has prioritized."Schwarz didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.Best-selling author Stephen King posted about the boycotton BlueSky, tying it to President Donald Trump,"Voted for Trump, now have buyer's remorse?" King wrote. "The Trump philosophy seems to be his version of FAFO [f--- around and find out]. Don't buy anything on the 28th unless you absolutely have to."King's not the only one to draw a connection between the boycott and the president. But the People's Union USA website FAQ says the group is not against Trump, Elon Musk, or others: "This movement is not about one person. It is about the system as a whole. Both political parties, both past and current leaders."Actress Bette Midler also posted support for the boycott on BlueSky."Freeze your spending on Feb 28th.... Don't shop!" Midler wrote. "And if you have to, please turn to a local small business!"Can such protests do anything?I spoke with Zachary Crockett, the host of The Economics of Everyday Things podcast, who noted that collective action can lead to change, especially when it puts pressure on economic interests.But can a 24-hour protest really make a difference?"Historically, a boycott has been most effective when its actions and demands are clearly defined, and when participation is unified and sustained," Crockett says. In addition to being sustained, he says, it helps for a boycott to strategically target key points in a corporation's supply chain or sales channels.Crockett notes that not shopping for a day could hurt the protesters more than the corporations and that boycotts become less effective as wealth becomes more concentrated. In the US, he says, a small percentage of individuals own "an astounding share of America's wealth and assets," and those people can better absorb economic pain."Boycotts come at a cost to its participants, too," he says, "and consumers generally have less runway than corporations do when it comes to making sustained economic sacrifices."Crockett says that for him, most days are already no-shopping days."I'm not a fan of spending money in general," he said. "I'm pretty frugal, probably to a fault, regardless of what's going on in the economy or political landscape. So, for me, every day is kind of an economic blackout."
