For instance, it recently announced the replacement of SMS authentication with QR codes for GMail. Results about you is another tool in its arsenal that will help it achieve that. In addition, there have also been other privacy improvements, including a SafeSearch Blurring setting that blurs out any explicit content by default whenever it appears in search results. How to Use the New Google Privacy FeatureTo use this tool, you need to first input personal data, like your name, address, and phone number. Google will scan this data and notify you as soon as a match is found. Anything that you wish to get removed from the search results can be requested for removal by clicking on the three-dot menu next to the results and selecting the remove this result option. There will be three options to choose from:First is the straightforward personal information removal, which can be selected for removing PII or doxxing content. The second option is flagging illegal content like copyright infringement. The last one is a new feature for situations when the user has already submitted an update on the data, but search results havent reflected those changes yet. When you select the third option, aka the refresh option, Google will be prompted to recrawl the website and update its information. Its worth noting that this feature has actually been around for quite some time now, but it was only accessible through the Google app. On the mobile web and desktop, it was tucked away in the history settings that most users didnt even know about. By making it more visible and adding a healthy dash of new updates, users will certainly feel more in control of their information.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • Google quietly fixed USB flaw that left over a billion Android devices exposed
    www.digitaltrends.com
In the first week of February, Google published its usual Android Security Bulletin, detailing security flaws that have been plugged to strengthen the platform safety. These flaws are usually declared once they have been fixed, except in special circumstances.February is one of those rare situations for a kernel-level, high-severity flaw that was still being actively exploited at the time of the bulletins release. There are indications that CVE-2024-53104 may be under limited, targeted exploitation, says the release note.Recommended VideosThe flaw was first reported by experts at Amnesty International, which describes it as an out-of-bound write in the USB Video Class (UVC) driver. The researchers add that since its a kernel-level exploit, it impacts overs over a billion Android devices, irrespective of the brand label. Please enable Javascript to view this contentSince its a zero-day exploit, only the attackers know of its existence, unless security experts sense its presence, develop a fix with the platforms team, and then widely release it for all affected devices. Two other vulnerabilities, CVE-2024-53197 and CVE-2024-50302, have been fixed at the kernel-level, but havent been completely patched at an OS-level by GoogleThe pool of affected devices is the Android ecosystem, while the attack vector is a USB interface. Specifically, we are talking about zero-day exploits in the Linux kernel USB drivers, which allows a bad actor to bypass the Lock Screen protection and gain deep-level privileged access to a phone via a USB connection.A Cellebrite device used that is used to extract data from smartphones. CellebriteIn this case, a tool offered by Cellebrite was reportedly used to unlock the phone of a Serbian student activist and gain access to data stored on it. Specifically, a Cellebrite UFED kit was deployed by law enforcement officials on the student activists phone, without informing them about it or taking their explicit consent.Amnesty says the usage of a tool like Cellebrite which has been abused to target journalists and activists widely was not legally sanctioned. The phone in question was a Samsung Galaxy A32, while the Cellebrite device was able to break past its Lock Screen protection and gain root access.Android vendors must urgently strengthen defensive security features to mitigate threats from untrusted USB connections to locked devices, says Amnestys report. This wont be the first time that the name Cellebrite has appeared in the news.Update your Android smartphone. ASAP!The company sells its forensic analysis tools to law enforcement and federal agencies in the US, and multiple other countries, letting them brute-force their way into devices and extract critical information. In 2019, Cellebrite claimed that it could unlock any Android or Apple device using its Universal Forensic Extraction Device. However, it has also raised ethical concerns and privacy alarms about unfair usage by authorities for surveillance, harassment, and targeting of whistleblowers, journalists, and activists.A few months ago, Apple also quietly tightened the security protocols with iOS 18.1 update, with the intention of blocking unauthorized access to locked smartphones and preventing exfiltration of sensitive information.Editors Recommendations

  • Serbian students Android phone compromised by exploit from Cellebrite
    arstechnica.com
MORE SURVEILLANCE AS A SERVICE Serbian students Android phone compromised by exploit from Cellebrite Android users who haven't installed Google's February patch batch should do so ASAP. Dan Goodin Feb 28, 2025 6:08 pm | 7 Credit: Getty Images Credit: Getty Images Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreAmnesty International on Friday said it determined that a zero-day exploit sold by controversial exploit vendor Cellebrite was used to compromise the phone of a Serbian student who had been critical of that country's government. The human rights organization first called out Serbian authorities in December for what it said was its pervasive and routine use of spyware as part of a campaign of wider state control and repression directed against civil society. That report said the authorities were deploying exploits sold by Cellebrite and NSO, a separate exploit seller whose practices have also been sharply criticized over the past decade. In response to the December report, Cellebrite said it had suspended sales to relevant customers in Serbia.Campaign of surveillanceOn Friday, Amnesty International said that it uncovered evidence of a new incident. It involves the sale by Cellebrite of an attack chain that could defeat the lock screen of fully patched Android devices. The exploits were used against a Serbian student who had been critical of Serbian officials. The chain exploited a series of vulnerabilities in device drivers the Linux kernel uses to support USB hardware. This new case provides further evidence that the authorities in Serbia have continued their campaign of surveillance of civil society in the aftermath of our report, despite widespread calls for reform, from both inside Serbia and beyond, as well as an investigation into the misuse of its product, announced by Cellebrite, authors of the report wrote.Amnesty International first discovered evidence of the attack chain last year while investigating a separate incident outside of Serbia involving the same Android lockscreen bypass. Authors of Fridays report wrote:The exploit, which targeted Linux kernel USB drivers, enabled Cellebrite customers with physical access to a locked Android device to bypass an Android phones lock screen and gain privileged access on the device. As the exploit targets core Linux kernel USB drivers, the impact is not limited to a particular device or vendor and could affect a very wide range of devices. The same vulnerabilities could also expose Linux computers and Linux-powered embedded devices to physical attacks, although there is no evidence of this exploit chain has been designed to target non-Android Linux devices. The report said that one of the vulnerabilities, tracked as CVE-2024-53104, was patched earlier this month with the release of the February 2025 Android Security Bulletin. Two other vulnerabilitiesCVE-2024-53197 and CVE-2024-50302have been patched upstream in the Linux kernel but have not yet been incorporated into Android.Forensic traces identified in Amnesty Internationals analysis of the compromised phone showed that the Serbian authorities tried to install an unknown application after the device had been unlocked. The report authors said the installation of apps on Cellebrite-compromised devices was consistent with earlier cases the group has uncovered in which spyware tracked as NoviSpy spyware were installed. As part of the attack, the USB port of the targeted phone was connected to various peripherals during the initial stages. In later stages, the peripherals repeatedly connected to the phone so they could disclose kernel memory and groom kernel memory as part of the exploitation. The people analyzing the phone said the peripherals were likely special-purpose devices that emulated video or sound devices connecting to the targeted device. The 23-year-old student who owned the phone regularly participates in the ongoing student protests in Belgrade. Any Android users who have yet to install the February patch batch should do so as soon as possible.Dan GoodinSenior Security EditorDan GoodinSenior Security Editor Dan Goodin is Senior Security Editor at Ars Technica, where he oversees coverage of malware, computer espionage, botnets, hardware hacking, encryption, and passwords. • Electronic tongue could let you taste cake in virtual reality
    www.newscientist.com
Hydrogels with a taste are administered into the mouth via a small tubeShulin ChenAn electronic tongue that can replicate flavours like cake and fish soup could help recreate food in virtual reality, but cant yet simulate other things that influence taste, such as smell.Yizhen Jia at The Ohio State University and his colleagues have developed a system, called e-Taste, that can sample a food and work out how to partly recreate its flavour in someones mouth. AdvertisementThis involves using chemicals that correspond to the five basic tastes: sodium chloride for salty, citric acid for sour, glucose for sweet, magnesium chloride for bitter and glutamate for umami. Those five flavours are already accounting for a very large spectrum of the food we have daily, says Jia.The system uses sensors to detect the levels of these chemicals in food, converts them to digital readings, and then sends these values to the pump, which pushes small amounts of different flavour-containing hydrogels into a small tube under a persons tongue.First, the researchers tested the system for single flavours, asking 10 people how well the device reproduced sourness on a five-point scale, compared with real samples of sour tastes. They gave the same number for the reproduced and real sourness 70 per cent of the time. The latest science news delivered to your inbox, every day.Sign up to newsletterThe team then tested whether the system could replicate more complex tastes lemonade, cake, fried egg, fish soup and coffee and asked a group of six people whether they could distinguish between them, finding that they could more than 80 per cent of the time. However, focusing only on flavours like this isnt very useful, says Alan Chalmers at the University of Warwick, UK, because other senses are also involved in how we taste. Next time you have a strawberry, close your nose and eyes. A strawberry is very sour, but it is perceived as sweet because of its aroma and the red colour. So if you send just sour across with their device, you will never know that it is actually from a strawberry. An e-tongue such as this is able to extract the amount of sweetness [and] sourness, but not taste as a human tongue perceives them, he says.Journal reference:Science Advances DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.adr4797Topics:virtual reality

  • Elon Musk says there's 'only a 20% chance of annihilation' with AI
    www.businessinsider.com
Elon Musk said in a Joe Rogan interview there's "only a 20% chance of annihilation."He said he still thinks AI will be smarter than humans and will pose an existential risk."I always thought AI was going to be way smarter than humans and an existential risk. And that's turning out to be true," he said.Elon Musk has a glass-half-full mentality when it comes to AI and that means there's "only a 20% chance of annihilation," according to the billionaire."The probability of a good outcome is like 80%," Musk said in a "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast episode released Friday. It's not the first time Musk has floated this probability of human annihilation, although he's previously included a range of 10% to 20%. Musk also said in the interview that he sees AI exceeding human intelligence in the next year or two. He said he expects AI to reach a level that is "smarter than all humans combined" in 2029 or 2030.That's in line with Musk's previous predictions, although he seems to have extended the earlier end of that timeline since. Musk said last year during a live X interview with Norges Bank CEO Nicolai Tangen, that he thought AI would "probably" exceed human intelligence as early as the end of 2025.His fundamental beliefs about the trajectory of AI haven't changed, though."I always thought AI was going to be way smarter than humans and an existential risk," Musk said in the interview. "And that's turning out to be true."Others in the field have similarly shared concerns about AI leading to human annihilation.Deep learning expert Geoffrey Hinton has said he believes there's a 10% chance AI will lead to human extinction in the next 30 years. Meanwhile, others, like AI safety researcher and cybersecurity director Roman Yampolskiy, said that the "probability of doom" is 99.999999%.Despite Musk's concerns about AI destroying humanity, he said in the interview he became involved with it initially to create a "non-profit open source AI" that was "the opposite of Google." Musk was one of 11 cofounders of OpenAI, which he has since left.Musk filed two lawsuits against OpenAI last year, the first of which he dropped. In the second one, Musk's lawyers argue that OpenAI "betrayed" its mission by moving to a for-profit model and entering a partnership with Microsoft. While Musk said in the Rogan interview he's "not happy" about the outcome with OpenAI, it led him to create the Grok, which is a "maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is like politically incorrect." Musk's xAI has trained the chatbot with prompts about whether it's OK to misgender Caitlyn Jenner to prevent a nuclear apocalypse or if it's possible to be racist against white people.Musk said he sees the most likely outcome of AI advancement as "awesome.""I think it's going to be either super awesome or super bad," Musk said, adding that he doesn't see it being "something in the middle."

  • Pentagon Marines are annoyed by an 'odd' uniform change they say will drive up dry-cleaning bills
    www.businessinsider.com
Marines at the Pentagon will switch from camouflage to formal "service" uniforms soon. The change is seen as costly and inconvenient, with no clear explanation from leaders.Other military branches at the Pentagon will continue wearing their comfortable camouflage uniforms.Amid all the other shake-ups at the Defense Department, Marines in the Pentagon are set to ditch their warfighting camouflage utility uniforms, commonly called "cammies," for the more formal "service" dress uniforms.Leaders haven't explained the coming change, which is set to take effect in about a week, according to a copy of the directive obtained by Business Insider, but Marines aren't exactly thrilled. Two Marines, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid retaliation, told BI the change feels out-of-sync with department priorities, offers less comfort, and is much more of a hassle.Marine Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Joshua Benson confirmed the swap, telling BI in a statement that "new guidance was passed and Marines will adhere to the lawful order." He declined to elaborate on why the change had been made.Compared to other US service branches, the Marine Corps is unusually very strict in its appearance standards. The Corps does not allow its Marines to wear fleece jackets to stay warm, for example, and has rigorous stipulations on what few options for outer garments can be worn and when.Male Marines must receive haircuts weekly, which in the DC area can cost over $500 per year. Female Marines, meanwhile, are not permitted to wear their hair in a braid or ponytail. Other services loosened old regulations on short hair and tight hair buns after some reports of alopecia amongst female troops.Officials from the Army, Air Force, and Navy told BI that no uniform changes are currently planned for their servicemembers stationed at the Pentagon from those branches. Those troops most often wear their cammies, which are famously comfortable (and good for covering coffee stains).Marine Corps leadership in the Pentagon decided to swap from wearing fancy "service" uniforms to cammies two years ago, before deciding recently to reverse course. The previous policy change listed a few reasons for the swap chiefly, that leaders then recognized the financial cost troops incurred from dry cleaning the "service" uniforms by one estimate, nearly $470 per year, which junior enlisted troops on the low-end of the pay scale are likely to feel more acutely. With inflation, these costs today are likely higher."The overall intent of the updated uniform guidance is to reduce the financial burden for our junior officer and enlisted Marines dry cleaning and uniform costs," the previous guidance said, according to Marine Corps Times.Since then, Pentagon Marines have usually worn the "service" uniforms just once a week, which some Marines say can help identify those who could exceed weight standards. Marines measure ribbon placement on the service "C" uniform. Lance Cpl. Daniel Valle/US Marine Corps Back to the old wayAs snazzy as they look, military uniforms haven't progressed far into the 21st century, including the Marine "service" uniforms, which can be considered the military equivalent of business casual. The uniforms have to be dry-cleaned and can be unforgivingly rigid. The look requires shirt stays for men and lacks the comfortable technical fabrics commonly seen in civilian business attire. Some Marines, including recruiters and those who are part of the prestigious Marine Barracks Washington, are expected to wear more formal uniforms daily. The new reversal seems contradictory, a Marine officer stationed at the Pentagon told BI, and unlikely to align with new political leadership's strict focus on military fiscal responsibility."While the services are being asked to cut back to save money, the young Marines are now being asked to fork out a lot more non-reimbursable money every week," she said.Junior military officers, especially women, already pay more out-of-pocket for uniforms compared to other ranks, according to a 2021 government watchdog report that analyzed uniform cost inequities amongst the services. That same report said that while enlisted Marines receive a yearly stipend for uniform costs, the stipend is insufficient."Focusing on warfighting and lethality while removing the uniform that symbolizes that seems odd," she said, referring to cammies, which most Marines wear both at home and while deployed. The change also seems a bit at odds with the vibes and style of the new secretary of defense, who has been seen wearing suits in the Pentagon but was also recently photographed wearing more casual "tactical" clothing while visiting Guantanamo Bay."I'm trying to save money and invest smartly," an enlisted Marine told BI. "The added expense of dry cleaning on top of weekly haircuts makes my financial goals harder to hit."

  • I Love the Moment That Everything Changes in Gundam GQuuuuuuX
    gizmodo.com
The latest entry in the Gundam franchise,GQuuuuuuX, is built around one of the most fascinating premises a mainlineGundam show has had in years. To get there, were asked to cast our minds back over 45 years to the original 1979 animeand in doing so, were also asked to consider a pretty hilarious idea. The vast majority ofGundam GQuuuuuuXas covered in its prequel/compilation movie GQuuuuuuX Beginning, out in American theaters today for a limited runis predicated around the fact that the show is in fact set in an alternate version ofGundams Universal Century timeline. The primary timeline of the originalGundam and its direct successor series, among others in the franchise,GQuuuuuuXs version of events asks us to consider another outcome. What if the antagonistic forces of the original series, the secessionist space colony Zeon, actually managed to win the war against Earth? GQuuuuuuXs inflection point to show this new timeline takes audiences right back to the very first episode of the 1979 anime.Beginning opens with an almost shot for shot, beat for beat recreation of the original opening moments of Gundam itself: after a brief explanation of the outbreak of the One Year War between Zeon and the Earth Federation, we follow three Zeon mobile suits as they infiltrate the Side 7 colony, looking to gain intel that the Federation has been developing a new prototype mobile suit there. But things immediately differ there: were told that one of the pilots who was meant to go on the mission is having their Zaku repaired after sustaining damage in a prior mission, leaving Zeon ace pilot Char Aznable to take his place. Its this that changes everything forGQuuuuuuXs timeline: Char identifies the prototype mobile suit, the Gundam, makes a bold move to exit his own Zaku and steal it during the chaos of Zeons arrival in Side 7, and the rest from there, as they say, is alternate history. GKids/Bandai Namco Filmworks Its fascinating to watch unfold inBeginning if youre a Gundam fan, seeing how the opening half that retells the originalGundam differs from this change, and what things echo throughout both. But if you are a diehard fan of the 1979 classic already, then you probably know who was meant to go on this mission instead of Char, and why it fails in the original series as young Amuro Ray finds himself as the one who gets in the Gundams cockpit to fight off the Zeon attackers. A man who is only ever known as Gene. In the very first episode of the originalGundam, Gene is kind of a massive asshole. Despite being on a stealth recon mission, hes loud and brash, high on not only his own supply, but that of his senior officer, Char Aznable, at this point in the conflict a decorated war hero. Bored with simply sitting in his ginormous weapon of war in a colony that, for the most part, just happens to be an ordinary residential facility, Gene immediately grows impatient, moves out of position, and defies orders and a threat of court martial, and starts indiscriminately firing at the Federation facilities and residential areas alike. It is this single action, GQuuuuuuX argues, that makes all ofGundam as we know it happen. Without Gene blowing the recon missionwithout him yearning to chase the glory Char has hadAmuro never gets in the Gundam, never kills Gene and the other Zeon soldiers attacking the colony, never escapes on the White Base and kicking off a new turnaround in the war for the Earth Federation. Mobile Suit Gundam happens because one egotistical jerk pulls a trigger, envious of the glory achieved by those above him. Of Char, specifically. Andthat is what makes this both absolutely hilarious, but also completely fascinating at the same time. Because in the original show Char isnt really the dashing war hero that Gene desperately wished to emulate. Hes a top pilot, yes, but hes far from the image of a warrior boldly dashing into fights head on: he schemes, he plots, he revels in deception and subterfuge. The war hero is a mask that Char wears as readily as his legendary helmet, always thinking two steps ahead as he plots his own agenda against Zeons ruling Zabi family. Char doesnt care about the war effort: he cares about betraying and destroying the Zabis, and hell use the opportunity of becoming their military poster child to do exactly that. Its still the same in GQuuuuuuXs vision for the character, too. Even with getting access to the Gundam, Char is still playing the war for his own game, plotting his vendetta against the Zabis all the time he is using the Gundam to win the war for them. Hell, even the way he decides to take the Gundam isnt in the heroically combative manner Gene might have assumed of him: he spots a chance while the Gundams inoperative, stages a distraction, and sneakily leaps out of his own suit to run over and take it off the back of a transport vehicle. That is who Char is, regardless of whether or not its the man we first met in the 1979 anime, or the version of him we now get to see inGQuuuuuuXs alternate timeline. What Gene believes in, in presumablyboth timelines, is predicated on a lie. All of this is made upon Chars layers of intrigue and deception being believed by those around himwhether its him successfully managing to eradicate most of the Zabis at the cost of losing the war in the original show, or this new vision of reality we now have in GQuuuuuuX. Its what makes Beginning such a delectable treat to watch unfold as a long-time fan of the series. Its made with a clear love and respect for what the original show did as pioneer for the mecha genre in anime, and a keen understanding of what made it so compelling four-and-a-half decades ago in the first place. A respect thats both enough for it to make such an absurdly fannish gesture in the first place, but also still have it be more than just simple emulation and homage to what came before it.If thats something thatGQuuuuuuX can keep at its core as the story progresses into the TV anime at large, Gundam fans will be in for one hell of a treat.
