  • Daredevil: Born Again is a rough reboot with a promising future
    www.theverge.com
Before Disney Plus and its parade of post-Endgame Marvel series, shows like Daredevil gave the studio a convenient way to infuse the MCU with a grittier, more dramatic energy. Being a Netflix project, the original Daredevil could go harder with its action and darker with its nuanced depiction of the man without fear. And with multiple solid spinoffs of its own, Netflixs Daredevil felt like it was working its way toward becoming a key part of Marvels future big-screen plans.Though the New York City of it all made an eventual Daredevil x Avengers crossover seem possible (albeit improbable), those hopes were dashed when Marvels production partnership deal with Netflix ended. For a time, it looked like Marvel intended to soldier on without Daredevil and the Defenders while cultivating a fresh crop of heroes to fight in the streaming wars. But that was clearly no longer the case when the devil of Hells Kitchen made unexpected, back-to-back guest appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo.In Disney Plus new Daredevil: Born Again series, you can see Marvel trying to recapture the street-level magic that made its Netflix shows pop. Born Again whips so many of the classic Daredevil tricks and picks up on old narrative threads that it almost plays like a proper continuation of its predecessors story at first. After working through some clunkiness in its first few episodes, the show finds a good rhythm in its back half thats surprising given how troubled the project seemed when Marvel decided to overhaul it mid-production. But while Born Again eventually finds its footing, its disjointed plotlines and uneven pacing make it feel like a soft reboot that cant always decide where its focus needs to be.Its possible to dive into Born Again without having seen much of Netflixs Daredevil, but the new shows story about how blind attorney Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is driven away from his secret work as a superhero hits harder the more you know about his past. Though everyone around Murdock understands how hard he fights to get his clients justice in the courtroom, few have any idea how many lives he has saved and changed for the better while fighting against New York Citys most vicious criminals. After years of working with both of Murdocks personas, his legal partners Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) both understand how putting on the Daredevil mask helps him channel his inner rage productively instead of letting it consume him from within. Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) also knows from firsthand experience how much worse off the city would be without Daredevil. But when Murdock suffers a devastating loss that turns his world upside down, he cant help but feel that its time to leave the superhero life behind.Aesthetically, at least, Born Again bears a striking resemblance to its Netflix predecessor as it first opens with an episode written by showrunner Dario Scardapane, who previously worked on both Daredevil and 2017s The Punisher. It initially seems as if Born Again intends to get back to the basics with its central trio starting a new, more grounded chapter of their lives before easing you into its heightened mode of storytelling. But the show abruptly shifts gears early on in a way that really emphasizes how much retooling Marvel did after dismissing Born Agains original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord over creative differences in 2023.Rather than leaning into its courtroom drama elements first and building to its action gradually like Corman and Ord reportedly wanted to, Born Again instead leads with a brutal set piece that feels calibrated to get hallway brawl fanatics frothing at the mouth. The move makes sense when you look at Born Again as Disneys latest attempt at winning over viewers who liked Netflixs TV-MA-rated Marvel shows. But there is a distinct Disney Plus glossiness to the shows CGI-enhanced set pieces that aside from the overall bloody and bone crunchiness makes them feel more a bit more like a CW production than the studio probably intended.Disney Plus / MarvelYou can also sense Marvels edits in the way Born Again quickly sets Karen and Foggy aside (and doesnt bring them back for a long while) in order to establish former New York Assistant District Attorney Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and retired cop Cherry (Clark Johnson) as Murdocks new allies. All of the shows newcomers and their lack of knowledge about Murdocks Daredevil identity help reinforce the idea that hes trying to turn over a new leaf. That secrecy lends itself to Murdocks new personal relationship with therapist Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), and it complicates his dynamic with Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes), a client accused of killing an NYPD officer. Presumably, some of that is for the benefit of new viewers who might not realize that the original Daredevil is also available to stream on Disney Plus. But it also often makes Born Again seem like its moving its central character back to square one, which clashes with the fact that this is technically meant to be the continuation of an ongoing story.Born Again feels like its torn between dueling desires to do its own thing and pick up where Netflix left off, especially when its zoomed in on Murdocks civilian life. Once it brings infamous crime lord Wilson Fisk (Vincent DOnofrio) back into the picture, however, you can really start to see how Marvel might be able to make this work well in due time. Disney Plus / MarvelBorn Again is far from the first show to wax philosophic about the secret identities of superheroes and villains being their true selves, but Cox and DOnofrios performances are the reason the idea works so well here. Theres a crackling energy coursing through every scene they have together that speaks to how Murdock and Fisk are both men struggling (and failing) to control their dark desires. In Fisks case, those desires transparently read as Trumpian as he launches a mayoral campaign on a draconian law and order platform designed to rid the city of vigilantes. And, while its clearly taking some cues from Marvels comics, the show gets surprisingly explicit (for Disney, at least) about the fact that it is commenting on the US current political climate.Whats both interesting and exhausting about Born Agains first season is the way that, even though you can sense how drastically it changed during the production process, both of its creative teams obviously came up with compelling ideas for how to give Daredevil a second life in the MCU. Aside from the Frankensteining, the shows issue is that there are simply a few too many moving pieces in play, which makes some of its supporting characters subplots feel busier than they probably should. Because the show manages to get itself into solid enough fighting shape in its last few episodes, its greenlit second season will likely be a stronger outing. But Daredevil: Born Agains two-episode debut is going to be a little rough to start when it begins streaming on Disney Plus tonight.Daredevil: Born Again also stars Zabryna Guevara, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Michael Gandolfini, Ayelet Zurer, and Wilson Bethel. The show is now streaming on Disney Plus.See More:

  • Paradise Season 1 Review
    www.ign.com
This review contains full spoilers for Paradise Season 1.Paradise was never going to be what you thought it was. Thats also what makes it so oddly fun. What starts as a family drama turns into a murder mystery and then a sci-fi conspiracy about the survivors of a world-ending catastrophe living underground in a massive city. And thats only the first couple of episodes. Over the full run of season 1, it becomes an ouroboros of a show that consumes itself with joyous abandon throwing in twist after twist and flashbacks galore, utterly unafraid to undercut everything it previously set up. That tendency reaches its pinnacle in the seasons penultimate episode, which captures a surprisingly relatable sense of existential dread as the world crumbles around secret service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) and President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). The cloying attempts to tug on the heartstrings the show was created by This Is Us Dan Fogelman, after all yield mixed results, but its in episodes like this where Paradise fully draws you in.At the same time, just as Paradise can be deathly serious, its also unrelentingly silly. Fogelmans hybrid of This Is Us and Lost boasts lines of dialogue so ridiculously overwrought and self-serious that they become comical. A character uses the cover of a steamy shower to say, with a completely straight face, I have a message from the president. A villain gives a monologue, then punctuates it by saying, in so many words, maybe I am a monster actually. Paradise doesnt care for subtlety, though this is a feature, not a bug. The talented likes of Brown, Marsden, and Julianne Nicholson make the most of this pulpy material even when the story feels like its on the verge of collapse. While not fully triumphant television its often visually bland, and a few stretches in the middle fall flat its largely well-constructed, and bolstered by winning performances. At the core of these eight episodes is the entertaining-enough mystery of who killed President Bradford. While investigating his boss death, Xavier discovers that shadowy leader Samantha Sinatra Redmond (Nicholson) megarich architect of the shows namesake bunker lied to them. Shes trying to cover up that there are people alive on the surface: survivors of the volcano-tsunami-nuclear-armageddon chain reaction depicted in episode 7, The Day. Some of this is revealed earlier in the season, though seeing Xavier piece it together remains enjoyable because Brown brings a sense of gravitas and determination to his part.Theres chaotic pleasure in seeing Paradise lay out a culprit and his motivation (and his previous assassination attempts) over the course of the season finale, but its also where the show is most creaky. Its thudding lines of exposition, while quite humorous, stack awkwardly on top of each other. Spelling everything out like this is tiresome. Sometimes, even for a ridiculous show like Paradise, less can actually be more. But the way it pulls this endgame off is so entertaining that I just went with it. Its like Paradise is speedrunning through its greatest hits while trying, mostly successfully, to tie up loose threads. We get a hurried investigation, plenty more flashbacks, and a final confrontation where Xavier tries to bring the murderer to justice. Theres even something to chew on in the (admittedly hurried) gestures towards bigger ideas about how the underground society is just as broken as the one that preceded it. Through it all, Brown is a consistently compelling screen presence, shining through the ludicrous plotting by hitting some big emotional notes.More thoughts on Paradise episode 7Is The Day manipulative? Sure. But its to prove a point, and show the weight of a climate disaster that is coming in the real world so slowly we think it wont happen in our lifetimes when it more than likely will. Thanks to the real-time structure, the performances, the direction, and the unrelenting nature of the hour, theres no way you cant come out of it feeling grief-stricken about this potential future of the Earth [F]or one hour, Hulus sci-fi show makes us live on the last day of the human species. Its shattering and will leave you in despair. Heres hoping and dreading that the team will find something else as traumatic and emotionally urgent for the already-announced Season 2. Its a lot. But if you can handle it, its also a must-watch.Read on to find out why Paradise's seventh episode is the most upsetting episode of TV you'll watch all year. Its hard to think of another show as enjoyably preposterous as Paradise. Yes, the twists feel telegraphed from a mile away and its way out of its depth when it ponders about the future of humanity. That just makes it all the more fun to watch Paradise careen through that stuff anyways. At every turn, I found myself shaking my head at just how silly things were getting and laughing along at Fogelman and companys commitment to play it with a straight face. All the wild shifts between the different shows within Paradise make it the mashup for our moment of inert, stretched-thin streaming series. The first season blows through any and all conventions to become something whose crowd-pleasing free-for-all is oddly comforting. It ensures it never gets too bogged down, feeling like the type of must-see, kinda trashy TV we dont often get any more. For all its many flaws it's a delightful, rejuvenating gem.

  • Daredevil: Born Again Is Setting Up Another Netflix Defenders Return
    www.denofgeek.com
This post contains light spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again.Wilson Fisk has a plan. As bad news as that is for heroes like Matt Murdock, Fisks plans are great news for fans of the other Netflix series in the Defenders universe. In the comics, Mayor Fisks decision to outlaw vigilantes paved the way for a major change in the life of Luke Cage, whose television series ended in 2018, the same year that the first Daredevil show came to an end. If Born Again follows suit, we may see Luke Cage in the MCU soon.As seen in Daredevil: Born Again, the newly-elected mayor of New York City won a populist platform that ironically foregrounds law and order. That means outlawing vigilantes, which raises the hackles of lawyer Matt Murdock. Not so much because the new law will target Murdock, who begins the series certain that hes put his nights as Daredevil behind him (yeah, right), but because it means punishing innocent men like Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes) a.k.a. the White Tiger. The Devil You KnowWithout question, theres more than a little political satire to the portrayal of Wilson Fisk in the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. Theres the monochromatic hats worn by his supporters, the mob-like anger, and the disruptor and outsider status Fisk adopts. But the storyline that Born Again adopts comes not from either of the current American presidents administrations, but rather from a 2022 Marvel Comics event. Created by writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto, Devils Reign saw Mayor Wilson Fisk do the unthinkable and make superheroes illegal in New York City.Given that most of Marvels heroes operate in New York, Fisks decision creates trouble immediately, landing Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman in jail and sending the Avengers on the run. At the same time, Fisk replaces heroes with his own Thunderbolts, supervillains such as Rhino and the Shocker serving as super-police, under the command of John Walker a.k.a. U.S. Agent. While the Avengers and their allies battle Fisk on the streets, a legal solution presents itself. Fisk gained his power by turning the public against superheroes, presenting them as unstoppable forces who do not honor the rule of law. Thus, they cannot simply beat him up. Instead, they have to beat him legally. And so, a hero steps up to run against him as mayor, a hero who has never hid his face or identity, a hero knows what its like to need a paycheck because hes been a hero for hire. A hero named Luke Cage.Hero For OfficeLuke Cages ascension to Mayor of New York City is an extension of the characters long-term arc. Created in 1972 by Archie Goodwin, John Romita Sr., and George Tuska, Luke Cage gained superpowers via illegal experiments conducted in the prison where he had been unjustly sentenced. Calling himself Power Man, Cage became a Hero for Hire, doing freelance work around the neighborhood.Although he later teamed with a number of heroes, including the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, Cage largely remained a street-level do-gooder, which built up his reputation. Unwilling to hide behind a mask or secret identity, and well-aware of the struggles of the people he represents.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! That working-man quality drove the Netflix series Luke Cage, which starred Mike Colter as the title hero. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker combined real-world issues (e.g. police firing upon a hoodie-wearing Cage, despite his raised hands) with Marvel tropes to create a superhero show with political urgency. Between that thematic weight, a fantastic lead performance by Colter, and strong supporting turns by Mahershala Ali and Alfre Woodard as villains, Luke Cage quickly became a favorite of the uneven crop of Netflix series. However, unlike Charlie Coxs Matt Murdock and Vincent DOnofrios Wilson Fisk, fans havent been able to keep up with Cage since his show ended in 2018. Coulters done good work in movies such as Plane and the television series Evil, but he hasnt had a chance to reprise his character in any of the proper MCU entries. That lack of attention could work in Cages favor. We last saw him establish himself as the protector of Harlem, having kept damage to a minimum in a gang war that wiped out most of the bad actors. In the seven years since, its easy to imagine that hes only grown in stature and importance within his neighborhood, exactly the type of person who could launch a legitimate campaign against Fisks mayoral seat while still leaving space to operate as a superhero. After all, this is the MCU, and if a Red Hulk can be President and brain-washed assassin the Winter Soldier can be a Senator, its not hard to believe the New York mayor can fight supervillains when the opportunity presents itself.Furthermore, bringing Cage in as the new NYC mayor could also point the way to more Netflix heroes to come into the MCU proper. The Defenders ReuniteAlthough Devils Reign is about a supervillain gaining control of political power, it isnt cynical about the American public. It shows that Fisk was able to outlaw superheroes not just because he could turn people against their protectors, but because he cheated. He used mind-control given to him by the item he kept in his cane, the thumb of Kilgrave a.k.a. the Purple Man.Netflix viewers are well aware of the Purple Man, even if they dont know him by that name. Kilgrave was one of the best villains of the Netflix shows, where he was portrayed by David Tennant in Jessica Jones. Although he died at the end of that shows first season, Killgrave could return in some fashion if Born Again decided to adapt that aspect of Devils Reign.Of course, where theres Killgrave, Jessica Jones cant be far behind, and fans would love to see her return, played again by Krysten Ritter. Thats especially true if were adapting recent Marvel Comics, where Cage and Jones have been married for several years, and even have a daughter together. Thankfully, Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist only appears on one page of the comic story, so we dont need to bring back that lackluster character from the Netflix shows, where he was indifferently portrayed by Finn Jones. As these examples show, Devils Reign isnt just a great story for Daredevil: Born Again to bring to the screen. Its also a great way for the Devil to give his Netflix friends their due.Daredevil: Born Again streams new episodes Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.

  • Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 1 and 2 Review The Devil We Know Gets Even Better
    www.denofgeek.com
This Daredevil: Born Again episodes 1 and 2 review contains spoilers. The first 20 minutes of Daredevil: Born Again thrusts viewers back into the world of Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer who moonlights as the costumed vigilante Daredevil. But make no mistake. This opening sequence doesnt just exist to catch up viewers who havent seen our hero since his Netflix series ended back in 2018. Rather, it presents a violent rupture from the past, one that sets Daredevil and the MCU on darker, yet still thrilling, path. What begins with Matt (Charlie Cox) enjoying a celebratory drink with his best friends and partners Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) ends in chaos as Dex (Wilson Bethel), the psychopath with perfect aim from season three of the Netflix show, arrives at Josies Bar and starts killing random patrons. What follows is easily the most brutal sequence ever seen in the MCU, as a now suited Daredevil tries to take down Dex, who wants to kill as many innocents as possible. The two take the fight from the bar into hallways and finally to a rooftop, puncturing, punishing, and pummelling each other along the way. Its a rough watch, but directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, the indie filmmaking pair who most recently worked on Moon Knight and Loki season two, have more in mind than simply recreating the visceral action that made the Netflix show so notable.Occasionally, Daredevil and Dex stop to take a breather. They groan and howl when they hit each other, they register pain and even sorrow. Benson and Moorhead shoot the sequence as a oner, but its not just for show. The expanding nature of the fight, its rests and restarts, teach the viewers a lesson that Matt refuses to accept, that his life will always be a cycle of suffering, with only occasional respite in between.Showrunner and episode one writer Dario Scardapane (episode two is written by Matt Corman & Chris Ord, and directed by Michael Cuesta) needs viewers to understand that cycle for when we check in with Matt after the opening sequence. One year after his climactic battle with Dex, Matt seems happier than ever. Hes launched a new, upscale law firm with former Assistant District Attorney Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and is perusing a new relationship with psychiatrist Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva).Unfortunately for Matt, his old enemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent DOnofrio) has also moved on to better things. Forced to hide out for over a year to recover from an injury (as seen in Hawkeye and Echo, but anyone who missed those shows wont be out of the loop), Fisk has returned to find his wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) ably running his criminal empire. So instead, Fisk turns his attention to politics, winning the New York mayoral seat on a populist, disruptor platform that would feel ridiculous if not for our current political climate. The first two episodes of Born Again understand the power of seeing these two characters on screen together again. Since Netflixs Daredevil ended in 2018, both Murdock and Fisk have made separate appearances in the MCU, popping up in one form or another in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Hawkeye, and Echo. Theres genuine power to the moment when they sit across from one another at a diner, and yet the show doesnt overplay it. Both men want to move on from their pasts and both see this conversation as a chance to put it all behind them. And yet, within seconds, both know that their pulling each other back into the life they want to leave.Midway through the conversation, a passerby pounds on the window in excitement at seeing Mayor Fisk, a supposed champion of the common man. Rage and irritation ripples over Fisks face for a second, before settling into the smile he flashes to the supporter. The look drops as soon as the supporter walks away pleased, replaced by embarrassment when Fisk realizes that the blind man across from him has seen everything.Moments like these punctuate the first two episodes of Born Again. Cox and DOnofrio have always been a highlight of Daredevil, and both are in rare form here.In the past, DOnofrio played Fisk as a vulnerable baby in the body of a gargantuan man, but hes allowed the Kingpin to mature some. DOnofrio tones down the heavy breathing and slack jawed expression he once gave the character. Hes lightened his step and approach, which only makes the moments in which he tightens his meaty fists all the more menacing.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Cox has also found new layers to Matt Murdock. Coxs endless charm is on full display during his meet-cute with Heather and banter with McDuffie. When Matt hears Fisk making campaign promises on television or learns about an innocent man (Kamar de los Reyes) targeted by the police, Cox expresses his characters ever-present rage through shuttle shifts in his gait. Even better is the sense of helplessness Cox gives Matt, most on display when he encounters Karen in his new life. Matt has never looked weaker than when Cox allows the character to breakdown, begging Karen to understand his behavior. The emotional stakes and physicality set Born Again apart from other Marvel shows on Disney+, which have been a mixed bag thus far. Two episodes in, Born Again feels like a proper television series, with each segment telling a full story, while still setting up plot lines to be explored. The inclusion of veteran TV cop Clark Johnson as a retired officer who does gumshoe work for Matt only underscores the procedural aspect of the series, a welcome change from most Marvel shows.Make no mistake, Born Again does take place within the MCU. Characters reference Spider-Man and the events of other series. Rogers: The Musical makes a triumphant return on city billboards. But the series feels like it exists in its own world, and not just because the f-bombs and brutality go further than any other entry in the franchise. And thats a good thing. Born Again works best as a character study about the nature of goodness and redemption in a world of criminal politicians and do-gooder vigilantes. It has to go to morally gray places that dont make sense when Captain America and Thanos are lurking in the corners. Cox and DOnofrio are more than capable of carrying the audiences attention as their characters sink for the darkness and reach for the light, a struggle punctuated by incredible fight scenes. In short, Daredevil: Born Again drags Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk back into Hell, but its heaven for fans of complex superhero television.Daredevil: Born Again episodes one and two are available to stream on Disney+ now. New episodes premiere Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.Learn more about Den of Geeks review process and why you can trust our recommendationshere.

  • Apple may release updated Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips this week
    9to5mac.com
An M4 MacBook Air may not be the only new Mac coming this week. Mark Gurman shared that Apple may actually be planning to release an updated Mac Studio this week, and the company may not be done introducing new M3 chips after all.Its not an Air but the new Mac Studio, codenamed J575, appears to be imminent, Gurman says. It could be announced as early as this week along with the new MacBook Airs. But when it comes to which chip powers the updated standalone desktop Mac, the answer may be surprising. There are signs these will come with an M4 Max but that its new Ultra chip will actually be an M3 Ultra, Gurman says. Apple currently sells two versions of the Mac Studio. The M2 Max version costs $1999, and the M2 Ultra model costs $3999.Apples M2 Ultra is basically two M2 Max chips connected together. Apple has not released an M3 Ultra or M4 Ultra. For now, the M3 and M4 line only includes Pro and Max versions.Replacing the M2-generation Mac Studio models with an M4 Max and M3 Ultra would certainly be weird and confusing, which makes it seem all the more plausible. To recap, the M4 Max already exists, but there are no M3 Ultra or M4 Ultra chips yet.The M4 Max would certainly exceed at single-threaded workloads, but the theoretical M3 Ultra would have a higher performance ceiling for multi-core workloads. The now two-year-old Mac workstation originally launched with M1 Max and M1 Ultra chip options during a time when the Mac Pro tower still ran on Intel Xeon chips. As Mark points out, the current Mac Studio and Mac Pro each include M2 Ultra configurations.Best Apple accessoriesFollow Zac Hall on X, and listen to Runtime with co-host Sophia Tung on Apple Podcasts and YouTube.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed.
