• James Webb Spots Mysterious Object Crossing Space Between Stars
    futurism.com
NASA's groundbreaking James Webb Space Telescope has spotted a mysterious object that's freely floating through interstellar space.According to NASA, the "planetary-mass" object, dubbed SIMP0136, is roughly 13 times the mass of Jupiter, and is located just 20 light-years from Earth. It's also spinning at a breakneck speed, completing a full rotation every 2.4 hours. Thanks to the JWST's detailed infrared light observations, an international team of researchers detected signs of "complex atmospheric features," including possible cloud layers and temperature shifts in the object's atmosphere, as detailed in a study they published in the journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters. It's a fascinating glimpse at an exceedingly rare object. The researchers suggest in their paper that objects like SIMP 0136 could much in common with cloud giants in the solar system, like Jupiter and Saturn, which "also have multiple cloud layers and high-altitude hot spots" (except that it's floating through space without a star, that is.) Astronomers also aren't ruling out the possibility that it's a brown dwarf, an object that's between a planet and a star. The latest research builds on existing observations by NASA's Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes."We already knew that it varies in brightness, and we were confident that there are patchy cloud layers that rotate in and out of view and evolve over time," said lead author and Boston University doctoral student Allison McCarthy in a NASA statement. "We also thought there could be temperature variations, chemical reactions, and possibly some effects of auroral activity affecting the brightness, but we werent sure."James Webb's Near-Infrared Spectrograph allowed scientists to observe a much wider spectrum of infrared light, leading to fascinating new insights into the lonely object."Until now, we only had a little slice of the near-infrared spectrum from Hubble, and a few brightness measurements from Spitzer," said principal investigator and Trinity College Dublin assistant professor Johanna Vos in the statement. The researchers ran hundreds of detailed light curves against atmospheric models to get a better sense of what SIMP 0136's atmosphere might look like. They found evidence for patchy clouds and bright "hot spots," possibly related to auroras, far above the clouds."Imagine watching Earth from far away," Boston University scientist and coauthor Philip Muirhead said in a statement. "If you were to look at each color separately, you would see different patterns that tell you something about its surface and atmosphere, even if you couldnt make out the individual features.""Blue would increase as oceans rotate into view," he added. "Changes in brown and green would tell you something about soil and vegetation."Other light curves observed by the JWST suggest the existence of pockets of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide but plenty of questions remain."We havent really figured out the chemistry part of the puzzle yet," Vos said. "But these results are really exciting because they are showing us that the abundances of molecules like methane and carbon dioxide could change from place to place and over time.""If we are looking at an exoplanet and can get only one measurement, we need to consider that it might not be representative of the entire planet," she added.More on brown dwarfs: Astronomers Discover Brown Dwarf Covered in StripesShare This Article

  • Scientists Modified Genes In Mice to Give Them Traits of Woolly Mammoths, and the Results Are Frankly Adorable
    futurism.com
Do the words "mammoth mice" sound a little oxymoronic to you? Well, in our modern age of gene editing, they simply represent a new reality. That's because scientists at Colossal Biosciences say they've genetically engineered tiny rodents to possess the iconic shaggy locks of the woolly mammoth, in a stepping stone towards reviving the extinct creatures. So, behold the extremely adorable "woolly mouse." With three times the hair length of an ordinary lab mouse, they're as fluffy as the titans they're imitating were enormous. And with any luck, the researchers at the "de-extinction" startup believe it's a step toward one day reintroducingmammoths back into their natural, frigid habitats."For us, it's an incredibly big deal," Beth Shapiro, chief science officer at Colossal, told NPR. "This is really validation that what we have in mind for our longer-term de-extinction project is really going to work."The researchers, whose work on the mice is yet to bepeer-reviewed, turned to the woolly mammoth's closest living relative, the Asian elephant. By comparing the Asian elephant's DNA to surviving genetic material from mammoths, the team identified the genesresponsible for some of the mammoth's most distinguishing characteristics, including its hair and body fat, and then edited the corresponding genes in mice embryos to recreate these traits.Per , some of the genes the team modified included one known as FGF5, which controls cycles of hair growth, to create longer hair. And to lighten the strands to golden hues, the researchers modified another gene, MC1R, which controls the production of melanin, a natural pigment produced by the body. (We should mention that Matthew Sechrest who was previously a board member at Futurism's parent company Recurrent and who owns an ongoing minority non-control equity stake is an investor in Colossal. He had no involvement in this story.)The results do seem pretty mammoth-like, at least on a surface level. But as impressive as the work is, some scientists aren't convinced that these changes are anything more than purely cosmetic."My biggest problem with the paper is that there is nothing addressing whether the modified mice are cold-tolerant through introducing traits that are apparent in mammoths which is the justification given for carrying out the work," Robin Lovell-Badge, head of the Stem Cell Biology Developmental Genetics Laboratory at London's Francis Crick Institute, told CNN."As it is, we have some cute looking hairy mice, with no understanding of their physiology, behavior, etc," added Lovell-Badge, who was not involved in the research. "It doesn't get them any closer to know if they would eventually be able to give an elephant useful mammoth-like traits and we have learned little biology."Needless to say, there are also serious questions to be raised about pursuing "de-extinction" over proven conservation methods, "Jurassic Park" overtones aside. Colossal argues that reintroducing mammoths or modern approximations of them into the Arctic could play a revitalizing role in the local ecosystem, and could even help protect the region's melting permafrost by packing down the snow and ice that covers it through their heavy footsteps. But this sounds pretty far-fetched to other scientists."They sort of want to mess around on a pretty large scale," Karl Flessa, a professor of geosciences at the University of Arizona, told NPR. "They don't know what would happen. They can't really assure me that, 'Oh, everything will be just fine. Everything will be just like it was back in the Pleistocene.'" "I'm not ready to play God like that," she added.More on genetic engineering: A Mouse With Two Dads Has Reached AdulthoodShare This Article

  • Daredevil: Born Again Is the Best Marvel Disney+ Series So Far
    screencrush.com
Marvels newDaredeviltelevision series is calledBorn Again. While the show borrowslittlematerial from the Born Again Daredevilcomics by Frank Miller andDavid Mazzucchelli, it turns out to be a fitting subtitle anyway. The show not only revives Charlie Cox and Vincent DOnofrios fan-favorite versions of Daredevil and the Kingpin from the earlierNetflix TV show, its production was paused and then restarted, after Marvel was reportedly dissatisfied with the results of the first handful of episodes. The studio shifted the series overall direction and replacedBorn Agains original showrunner and directors.Despite the rocky development, the results speak for themselves.I dont know if I would say my enthusiasm for Marvel TV is, ahem, rebornbased solely onthis one show. But I am confidentthat Ive enjoyed thefive Daredevil: Born Againepisodes Ivewatched so far more than any otherMarvel series on Disney+, and that includes popular titles likeWandaVision andLoki.DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAINMarvelloading...READ MORE: What One Man Learned Reading Every Marvel Comic Ever PublishedIf youre expecting something based on Miller andMazzucchellis storyline about the Kingpin systematically destroying Daredevils life (followed by Daredevils gradual recovery and triumph over his arch-foe), you can forget about that right now. In fact, NetflixsDaredevilalready adapted some ofMarvel Comics Born Againin its third and final season.Throughits first five episodes, theBorn AgainDisney+ series is far more indebted to recent sources, includingDaredevilstories byCharles Soule where the Kingpin becomes the Mayor of New York City, and The Trial of the Century storyline fromwriter Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev in which Daredevils alter ego, defense lawyer Matt Murdock, defends another vigilante, the White Tiger, after he is wrongfullyaccused ofmurder.Early episodes ofBorn Againfollow Murdock (Cox) as he seeks evidence that would exonerate White Tiger (Kamar de los Reyes). Meanwhile, former Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk (DOnofrio) runs for mayor of New York while heobsesses overthe fate of masked vigilantes like Daredevil and White Tiger.Daredevil: Born AgainMarvelloading...According to numerous online reports,Daredevil: Born Again wasoriginally intended as more of an unofficial reboot of the property, with Cox and DOnofrio as the only returning cast members from NetflixsDaredevil. The version of the show that finally wound up on Disney+brought back several more familiar faces, including Deborah Ann Wolls Karen Page, Elden Hensons Foggy Nelson, Wilson Bethels Bullseye, Ayelet Zurers Vanessa Fisk, and Jon Bernthals Punisher. All of these characters play crucial roles in setting up Born Agains A plot, and firmly establish it as a continuation of the earlier series. That said, even if you never watched the Netflix Daredevil, you wont be lost. I never finished DaredevilSeason 2, and I never even started Season 3 and I never felt the slightest bit confused about what was happening in Born Again. Equally important, I never felt like I wasjoininga show in its fourth season. (Kudos to series creators Dario Scardapane and Matt Corman and Chris Ord for producing something that feels connected to whats come before, but not beholden to it.)Daredevil: Born AgainMarvelloading...After an extremely elaborate fight sequence in the premiere episode, Born Againslows down and narrows its scope, burrowing into the minds and struggles of its two leads. But the relatively limitedamount of action never bothered me because the shows characters and the stories are so good.Daredevil: Born Again doesnt feel like a tangentialfootnote tosome larger overarching mega-narrative about the MCU; it plays like a real TV show, one with an overarching season-long storyline alongside shorter episodic ones, plus a deep bench of valuable supportingplayerslike Matt Murdocks worldweary investigator pal Cherry (Clark Johnson) and Wilson Fisks scheming protg Daniel (Michael Gandolfini clever casting for a movie about a mob boss with a heap ofdomestic issues).Although Matt Murdock has largely sworn off costumed adventuring for much of the early part of this season, Born Againalso digs into the moral dilemmas faced by a character who fights for justice in a court of law and then takes the law into his own hands by donning a red mask and body armor and punching bad dudes repeatedly in the face and neck. White Tigers trial is a great venue to explore some of those ideas, and the story takes several juicy twists and turns along the way even if youhaveread the comics those episodes are based on.DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAINMarvelloading...The early episodes of the series also feature something sorely lacking from a lot of other Marvel shows (and a lot of modern prestige shows in general):Genuine cliffhangers. When each episode cut to black, I was excited to start the next one. Thats a feeling the MCU hasnt given me in a while. Given the long and precarious route Daredevil: Born Againtook the screen, its also a borderline miraculous one.The first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are available now on Disney+. Peter Engel, the TV executive best-known for changing the landscape of young adult programming in the early 90s, has died at the age of 88.Engels family confirmed his death to Variety, noting that he passed away in his Santa Monica home.Born in Manhattan in 1936, Engel began his career as an NBC Page at the networks famed 30 Rock location. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 and eventually worked his way up to producer. His early TV credits included the series How to Survive a Marriage and The Paul Williams Show in the late 70s. Still, it would be a decade later that Engel truly left his mark on television.Brandon Tartikoff, the president of NBC, said he wanted me to do a live-action show on Saturday morning, Engel recalled in a 2016 interview. I said, No! Get someone else! I dont want to do a Saturday morning show!Tartikoff's initial concept was called Good Morning, Miss Bliss, inspired by his real-life sixth grade teacher. Despite his initial skepticism, Engel agreed to helm the project, which initially ran on the Disney Channel in 1989. When the show failed to find an audience, Engel reworked it into a spin-off for NBCs Saturday morning slot. The new series, focused more on the students than the teacher, was called Saved by the Bell.READ MORE: Top 100 '90s Rock AlbumsWith a cast of characters that included Zach Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez), Kelly Kapowski (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) and Screech Powers (Dustin Diamond), Saved by the Bell became an unexpected success. The sitcom clicked with kids across America, making it a 90s pop-culture phenomenon. The success of Saved by the Bell led NBC to create TNBC, an entire block of Saturday morning programming dedicated to young-adult audiences. Engel was one of the driving forces behind TNBC and modeled more shows including California Dreams, Hang Time and City Guys off of the Saved by the Bell formula. As TNBCs popularity began to wane, Engel moved away from the programming. His last show in the block ended in 2001 and TNBC was retired by the network a year later. In 2003, Engel transitioned to reality television with the comedian competition series Last Comic Standing. The series ran for nine series on NBC and helped propel the careers of Iliza Shlesinger, Amy Schumer, and Doug Benson (among others). • 'Daredevil: Born Again' Review: Thrilling, Bone Crushing and Brutally Satisfying
    www.cnet.com
Seven years after Netflix canceled Marvel's Daredevil, it remains one of the best comic book TV series ever. Fans have seen Matt Murdock since then, with Charlie Cox reprising his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo, with the most recent example in the new Disney Plus series Daredevil: Born Again. The show feels like welcoming back a dear old friend who left town for a while -- a friend with super senses who administers lethal beatdowns with his bare hands. If you're wondering whether the new reboot lives up to the hype, let me reassure you. Daredevil: Born Again retains the same bite, viciousness and brilliance of the original and earns every bit of that TV-MA rating. The show packs in the shocks, drama, graphic, bloody brutality and a dose of introspection. Performances from Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin are as superb as ever. Bones crack in your ear, blood spurts on your screen, and there is palpable suffering, both emotional and physical. Daredevil is back in excellent form. Debuting Tuesday night on Disney Plus, the series sees Cox return as attorney Matt Murdock, who fights for everyman but is conflicted about his identity as Daredevil, while Wilson Fisk seeks to change his Kingpin persona. With New York City as the backdrop -- and a major character itself -- crime, moral ambiguity, politics and manipulation all play roles in this story about what makes someone a hero or villain. Both Murdock and Fisk believe they know the answer and want to convince everyone of their side. When Daredevil: Born Again kicks off, a tragic event sets the wheels in motion, unlocking a rage in Murdock he'd rather quell, but it's lurking beneath his "mask." The timeline jumps forward one year, with Fisk in the running for mayor and Murdock having his own ambitions. In the opening scene of episode 1, it feels like opening your eyes to the city and is a reminder of why people loved the world of Daredevil in the first place. The first episode -- which features the diner scene shown in trailers -- plays out with a visual ode to the comic book of the same name and reaffirms how Murdock is grounded in his sense of faith and justice. Charlie Cox as Daredevil/Matt Murdock, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson in Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again. Giovanni Rufino/MarvelBad guys are everywhere in NYC, from the streets to the police force to the halls of the city's highest political office. The first iteration of Daredevil explored Hell's Kitchen and the hero's origin, walking us through the story as a slow-burn tinged in red, intense fight scenes and contemplative dialogue. Its crimson, drippy opening credit sequence served as a metaphor about how bloody things could get in pursuit of good (or bad).In the opening credits for Born Again, the stone veneer signals that this time around, Daredevil has hardened and the blind scales of justice shift into gray areas. Those gray areas may involve righteous rage from a vigilante, barbarous acts committed by evil villains or something in between. Daredevil: Born Again is not only about the fight for what's right against darkness but also for one's soul and the soul of the city.Even among the darkness, there's a bright spot for Murdock with his new love interest, Heather (played by Margarita Levieva). As a therapist, her insights about human behavior challenge Murdock 's perception of himself. Though it's not all rosy for the pair, their chemistry is undeniable and presents a side of Daredevil/Murdock that viewers need to see. What happened to Fisk in Echo is still impacting him as Daredevil: Born Again starts. His appetite for success is big, warranting the layered journey that unfolds for this character. Sometimes, that white suit gets a little dirty, but such circumstances beg Fisk and the viewers to ask why. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Giovanni Rufino/MarvelThroughout the series, there are shadowy subplots and waves of characters, both old and new. Those appearances include the rowdy rebel Frank Castle/Punisher (outstandingly played by Jon Bernthal), Karen Page, Ben Poindexter/Bullseye, White Tiger, Muse, Vanessa Fisk, Michael Gandolfini as Daniel and the niece of the late Ben Urich (the reporter who met an untimely demise in Netflix's Daredevil). Callbacks to the original show are weaved in but don't saturate the story as gratuitous fan service. Instead, the references to the original help tie Born Again's story events and character decisions together. Dread, cleverness, hope, power and deception drive every element of these episodes forward. The series' pacing is designed to play into Murdock and Fisk's parallel story arcs, creating conditions for tensions to build between heroes and villains, loversand in the city itself. It sometimes feels chaotic but serves a greater purpose for the two leads. Heady fight scenes between Daredevil and Poindexter, Daredevil and a serial killer, and Punisher versus anybody ensure that you don't want to take a bathroom break. Perhaps many of you may want to stream Disney Plus without ads to avoid disrupting the jaw-dropping action and emotional streaks. It gets heavy.Comic book fans are familiar with Daredevil and Fisk and their ongoing, co-dependent relationship that spotlights their similarities and differences. They both possess a duality contrasting their vulnerable human sides with their dark and savage natures. In some instances, one side dominates more than the other, but in Daredevil: Born Again, the contrast is not limited to these two. Experiencing the rebirth of this series is well worth stepping into the darkness.

  • OnePlus Watch 3 Review: The Best Battery Life of Any Android Smartwatch
    www.cnet.com
Editor's note, March 4, 2025:We've updated our score for the OnePlus Watch 3 from 8.5 to 8.8 to reflect that OnePlus extended its Wear OS update cycle to three years of software and security updates, with support lasting until 2027 with Wear OS 7.In my 10-plus years of testing smartwatches, I've never had to actively try to drain a battery. That changed when I strapped on the $330 OnePlus Watch 3. Five days into my battery test, after charging it to 100%, this watch was still going strong; tracking my sleep, runs and vitals without missing a beat.I'll admit that the Watch 3 didn't make the most favorable first impression, with its clearly masculine design and oversized screen that practically swallowed up my normal-size wrist. I half-expected to write it off as just another midrange smartwatch destined to collect dust in a drawer. But it turns out, I'm willing to overlook a few things like the size and lack of ECG functionality for exceptional battery life. 8.7/ 10 SCORE OnePlus Watch 3 $330 at Oneplus Pros 5-day battery life with all features enabled Sleek comfortable design Customizable buttons as shortcuts Advanced metrics for select sports modes Cons Single size option is too large for small wrists Only three years of software and security updates Lacks menstrual cycle tracking ECG is not available in the US or Canada No LTE version or iOS compatibility Four years after itsshaky debut, OnePlus' underdog smartwatch has matured into a true competitor to Samsung and Pixel watches, delivering the best battery life I've ever tested on a Wear OS device -- all while packing solid health features into a subdued and elegant (albeit large) design.Battery life takes center stage It took over five days for me to see this pop up on my OnePlus Watch 3. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETUnlike the original $160 OnePlus Watch and last year's $180 Watch 2R, whose main draw was affordability, the Watch 3 shifts the focus from price to performance. With its $330 price tag, OnePlus is positioning it as a premium flagship device, competing directly with similarly priced Wear OS watches like theGoogle Pixel Watch 3 andSamsung Galaxy Watch 7. What truly sets it apart is its battery, which is larger than its predecessor at 631mAh (versus 500mAh on the Watch 2).The Watch 3 uses a dual chipset system to split up tasks and optimize power consumption and get even more out of its big battery. The Snapdragon W5 processor focuses on powering app usage, while the BES2800 MCU Efficiency chip handles background tasks that don't use as much power.Though initially skeptical, my two weeks of testing confirmed that the OnePlus Watch 3 delivers on its five-day battery claim. I did three GPS workouts, one of which was an hour and a half hike, and six full nights of sleep tracking. Even its fiercest Wear OS competitors would struggle to last three days without resorting to using a low-power mode that strips the watch of its "smart" features and turns it into a glorified digital clock. The only caveat with the Watch 3 is that it remains on the default "Smart mode" to achieve the full five days. This mode has a raise-to-wake screen and requires using one of OnePlus' official watch faces. I typically prefer an always-on display with a busier watch face filled with my most-used complications and shortcuts which would likely bring the battery life closer to three days -- still a feat considering how bright the screen is, even in dormant mode. When I first started testing the watch, I made the mistake of opting for a non-OnePlus watch face with a three out of three rating on the battery drain scale and still managed to squeeze in four days worth of charge. While I haven't tested the claim yet, OnePlus says the watch can make it to 16 days in "Power Save" leaving it mostly as a dedicated fitness tracker rather than a full-featured smartwatch.Of course, everyone has a different version of what "normal" use is, and when you finally charge it, the Watch 3 goes from zero to 100% in just under an hour.Polished design, with one giant oversight The OnePlus Watch 3 only comes in a single size. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETThe OnePlus Watch 3 has a sleek stainless steel design with a rotating crown with an easy-to-grip texture making it simple to turn. There's a slim titanium bezel framing the screen that's reminiscent of the old rotating bezels on the early Samsung watches that I loved. Sadly, this one doesn't move, but I like how it elevates the design, making it look less like a giant circular 1.5-inch AMOLED display strapped to my wrist.Objectively, this is a good-looking watch. But as a woman with an average-size wrist, this watch feels huge and clearly not designed with me in mind. I don't need a rose gold frame and a sparkly pink band, I just wish it had more inclusive sizing options and maybe a classic gold option. The Watch 3 is far too big for my wrist. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETThe watch comes in a black or silver finish, with interchangeable rubber watch bands in moss green, black or Nordic blue that scream "made for men." If the Watch 3's size and bands were its only exclusion of female representation, I might be able to write it off. But it's missing one more feature I've come to expect on a smartwatch: menstrual tracking.Robust health features, minus period tracking The OnePlus Watch 3 is packed with sensor to track your heart rate, blood oxygen levels and even sleep. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETIt's a big miss that OnePlus didn't include menstrual tracking on the Watch 3. Menstrual tracking is now a standard feature in newer Apple Watch and Garmin smartwatches. The Watch 3 has pretty much every other health feature including temperature tracking, which can be used to help identify a woman's ovulation window. Oversight aside, it's clear that OnePlus is investing heavily in health tracking. Beyond basic heart rate and sleep data, the watch measures more advanced metrics like cardiovascular health, blood oxygen levels, wrist temperature, and overall well-being, including emotional and stress levels. It also features an electrocardiogram, though as of publication, OnePlus hasn't sought FDA approval, meaning the feature will not be active in the US or Canada. While not medical-grade, OnePlus says that the Watch 3's health metrics are more accurate than in previous models, thanks to upgraded sensors, refined algorithms, and improved cover glass over the back sensors for clearer readings. The Watch 3 also debuts a 60-second health check-in, a feature that checks all your vitals at once by pressing your finger on the watch's bottom button to create a circuit. My first health check-in was concerning and displayed a red exclamation mark with the word "abnormal" next to it. It turns out that all my vitals were in range, but my sleep score was so low that it skewed the results.Battery life is a game changer for sleep tracking While not prominent on this watch face, the Watch 3's best feature is its battery life. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETAs a low-key sleep-tracking hater, I never realized just how much battery life factored into my frustration. As a parent of young kids, I already know I'm not getting enough sleep, and seeing a bad sleep report first thing in the morning just sets me up for a day of dragging and self-pity. I feel the same way about wellness checks. Not having to take off the watch for five consecutive days made me more inclined to track my sleep, and I may have even learned a thing or two about my sleep patterns. The Watch 3's long battery let me collapse into bed at the end of the day without worrying whether my watch had enough charge to last through the night. The watch even tracked my sleep on night six, despite being down to 10% battery in "Power Save" mode. The watch also has an option to monitor SpO2 (blood oxygen levels) and breathing patterns during sleep to help identify more serious breathing issues, but it will drain the battery faster and needs to be activated manually from either the watch or the mobile app.According to a recent interview from Wareable, OnePlus is already in the process of seeking FDA approval for sleep apnea detection, which may make the extra battery drain worthwhile.A worthy fitness companion to put you through the paces The Watch 3 can support over 100 different types of workouts. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETIn terms of fitness, the OnePlus Watch 3 covers all the basics, with more than 100 different sports modes, six of which it detects automatically: running, walking, rowing, elliptical machine, cycling and swimming. It also offers a "professional" mode for 11 sports that keep tabs on more nuanced metrics related to that sport. For runners, it's things like form and foot balance, and for tennis players, it's swing speed and stroke. While it may be overkill for most, as a runner who recently learned how to leverage heart rate zones to intensify workouts, I was excited to nerd out on the additional metrics.I used it during my usual 3-mile run and learned that while I have excellent balance between my right and left feet, my ground contact time (how long my foot stays on the ground) and vertical oscillation (how much I bounce) could use some improvement to make my runs more efficient and less injury-prone. The app provides context for the additional data, but it be overwhelming, and you have to dig around for a definition of each metric. I was also left longing for more actionable tips for improving my stats. The One Plus Watch 3's heart rate tracking kept up with my Polar chest strap (the gold standard for athletes), with a lag of just a second or two and a one point difference in average heart rate between the chest strap and the watch. Heart rate serves as a baseline for many of the fitness metrics on the Watch 3. However, once I started running uphill and inching closer to my maximum heart rate, I noticed that lag time increased to about 25 seconds between what the chest strap was showing (on my phone) and the number on my wrist. I tried tightening the band, but it only helped temporarily. By the end of my workout, the watch showed that I had stayed in my peak heart rate zone for 19 seconds, while the chest strap recorded me in this zone for about three and a half minutes. On the left are two screenshots from the OHealth app showing what my Watch 3 tracked during a run. On the right are two screenshots from the Polar app showing what my chest strap heart rate monitor tracked. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETThe lag could be partially due to the sensor's proximity to the heart (versus the wrist). Sweat and arm movement could also interfere with an accurate read -- a problem for most smartwatches. Whatever the case, heart rate accuracy could be an issue if you use it for high-intensity sports or more serious training. You're still better off using a chest strap.Another key feature for outdoor sports enthusiasts is its dual-frequency GPS tracking system, which OnePlus says can position you accurately even in challenging environments, such as crowded cities surrounded by high rises. I live in a rural environment that's more sheep than skyscrapers, so I haven't been able to fully test this claim. It did position me perfectly on my hour and a half hike through oak trees and vineyards. With an IP69 rating, the OnePlus Watch 3 is also water-resistant up to 50 meters.Weighed down by Wear OS and limited updates Here's the OnePlus Watch 3 next to a OnePlus 13 with the OHealth app open. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETThe Watch 3 runs on Wear OS 5, with a few additional OnePlus design and navigation features. You can customize the rotating crown and side button as shortcuts, but everything else will feel like a standard Wear OS watch packed with your downloaded apps. The interface of the Watch 3 feels sluggish, with a slight lag in response time, though it became easier to use as I got more familiar with the swipe and tap directions. The UI isn't exactly intuitive, either. For example, the battery icon shows the remaining charge but doesn't let you switch to "Smart" or "Power Save" mode, which, after some trial and error, I found hidden behind what looks like an infinity icon. There are also three ways to access the workout screen, but only one of those ways will allow you to add a workout type (through the list of apps). This may be more of a Wear OS navigation issue than a OnePlus problem, but it's still cumbersome.Additionally, you'll need to download the separate OHealth app to your phone to access the watch's full range of health-tracking features. The app itself is visually appealing and intuitive, but the setup wasn't seamless. It took multiple tries to sync with my Google Health data. It's worth noting that I was using a developer's version of the OHealth app, so setup may be smoother on the public version. The OnePlus Watch 3 may also become obsolete faster than some of its rivals. Unlike Samsung's Galaxy Watches, which offer five years of Wear OS updates, the OnePlus guarantees support for software and security updates only until 2027. The Watch 3 will get updated to Wear OS 6, and 7, putting it in line with the Pixel 3, which launched in the fall of 2024.Solid battery life and features tip the scale Here's the Watch 3 being charged. Vanessa Hand Orellana/CNETIf you're looking for a watch with a smaller footprint or a more feminine design, then the OnePlus Watch 3 may not be your best bet. But if battery life is at the top of your wishlist, this is one Android smartwatch that's definitely worth considering. The OnePlus Watch 3 is a premium smartwatch at a midrange price that checks nearly all the boxes for health and fitness features and outlasts most competitors when it comes to battery life -- just not when it comes to software updates. The OnePlus Watch 3 is now available for $330 on the OnePlus website. • Key ex-OpenAI researcher subpoenaed in AI copyright case
    techcrunch.com
Alec Radford, a researcher who helped develop many of OpenAIs key AI technologies, has been subpoenaed in a copyright case against the AI startup, according to a court filing Tuesday. The filing, submitted by an attorney for the plaintiffs to the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, indicated that Radford was served a subpoena on February 25. Radford, who left OpenAI late last year to pursue independent research, was the lead author of OpenAIs seminal research paper on generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs). GPTs underpin OpenAIs most popular products, including the companys AI-powered chatbot platform, ChatGPT. Radford joined OpenAI in 2016, a year after the firms founding. He worked on several models in the companys GPT series, as well as a speech recognition model, Whisper, and DALL-E, the companys image-generating model. The copyright case, re OpenAI ChatGPT Litigation, was brought by book authors including Paul Tremblay, Sarah Silverman, and Michael Chabon, who alleged that OpenAI infringed their copyrights by using their work to train its AI models. The plaintiffs also argued that ChatGPT infringed their works by liberally quoting those works sans attribution.Last year, the Court dismissed two of the plaintiffs claims against OpenAI, but allowed the claim for direct infringement to move forward. OpenAI maintains its use of copyrighted data for training is protected under fair use. Redford isnt the only high-profile figure who attorneys for the authors are attempting to wrangle. Plaintiffs lawyers have also moved to compel the deposition of Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, both ex-OpenAI employees who left the company to start Anthropic. Amodei and Mann have fought the motions, claiming theyre overly burdensome.A U.S. magistrate judge ruled this week that Amodei must sit for hours of questioning about the work he did for OpenAI in two copyright cases, including a case filed by the Authors Guild.
