• Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2s Next Patch Will Bring Over 1,000 Bug Fixes
    gamingbolt.com
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2launched last month in a significantly better state than its predecessor did several years ago, but as with any game of its scale and ambition, it wasnt completely devoid of technical wrinkles. Developer Warhorse Studios has, of course, been at work on post-launch patches and updates, and the next update that releases is, in fact, going to be quite a major one.Thats as per Warhorses global PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, who revealed in an interview with Tech4gamers thatKingdom Come: Deliverance 2snext patch will bring over 1,000 fixes. The next patch has over five months of work in it and over 1,000 bug fixes, he said. Many will be wondering whether we can expect the patch to bring any noteworthy new gameplay features or quality-of-life improvements on top of bug fixes, though that is certainly what five months of behind-the-scenes work would indicate. When we can expect this patch remains to be seen, though hopefully it wont be too long before Warhorse Studios has concrete information to share.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It has sold over 2 million units worldwide, according to publisher Deep Silver. Read our review of the action RPG through here.

  • Assassins Creed Shadows Could Add New Game Plus After Launch
    gamingbolt.com
With a 30-40 hour main story and roughly just as much optional content on offer (if not more), the upcomingAssassins Creed Shadowsisnt going to have any shortage of content even right out the gate. For players looking to get yet more out of it, however, a New Game Plus option might also be in the pipeline- at some point. The same was suggested by creative director Jonathan Dumont in an interview with Twitter user @Genki_JPN. As per Dumont, Ubisoft is looking into adding New Game Plus and other modes toAssassins Creed Shadowsfollowing its release, based on feedback from the community. What other modes could refer to is anyones guess, though based on Ubisofts track record with priorAssassins Creedaction RPGs, one would imagine a Discovery Tour mode is likely to be added.Assassins Creed Shadows launches for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 20. Meanwhile,Shadowsfirst post-launch expansion,Claws of Awaji, will also bring an additional 10 hours of content upon its release in late 2025.I had the opportunity to interview Assassins Creed Shadows Creative Director Jonathan Dumont. Here are some of the key points: Now was the right time for Japan because the team really wanted to do it and it was a dream for them. • 10 Marvel Characters Well Probably Never See Again in the MCU
    www.denofgeek.com
After 17 years, 35 movies, and numerous TV series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a Goliath of the entertainment scene. Were on the cusp of a new era, as the Fox deal will finally add the likes of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to the MCU, meaning hundreds more characters are on the way. Thats before we get to the multiversal potential of bringing back characters from the colorful past of Marvel Movies. It was always inevitable that some were going to get lost in the shuffle, but as Captain America: Brave New World proved by bringing back Liv Tylers Betty Ross for the first time since 2008s The Incredible Hulk, forgotten characters can return at the most unlikely time. Even though the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are pitched to be supersized adventures, many are doomed to remain on the sidelines. With that in mind, here are 10 MCU characters were worried well never see again.Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp)Like her or loathe her, the introduction of Emily VanCamps Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier sent shockwaves through the MCU. Going under the codename of Agent 13, Carter was the great-niece of Peggy Carter and was crucial in helping Chris Evans Steve Rogers take down the HYDRA-infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Following the death of Peggy, Sharon became something of a love interest for Steve, leading to a controversial kiss in Captain America: Civil War.The Falcon and the Winter Soldier attempted to make Sharon Carter more important by revealing her as the villainous Power Broker, then teased a much bigger role with a post-credit stinger. Captain America: Brave New World wouldve been the perfect opportunity to bring back Carter, and with reports that the original plan for Captain America 4 revolved around the Power Broker, this couldve been the case. Instead, its thought the negative backlash to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier led to executives scaling back Carters role until it was non-existent.Mac Gargan (Michael Mando)One of the MCUs most frustrating post-credit teases came at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Although Tom Holland had appeared in Captain America: Civil War, Homecoming gave him his own standalone that featured Michael Keatons Vulture as the de facto big bad. Other villains included Shocker, the Tinkerer, and Michael Mandos Scorpion. Despite only having a minor role and failing to fully take on his Scorpion persona, Gargan teased a big future for the character and a potential Sinister Six spinoff.Keatons Adrian Toomes met Gargan in prison at the end of the movie, while Scorpions mention of some boys on the outside seemed like an easy way to cue the Sinister Six. Keaton bizarrely popped up in Morbius, but after Sonys Spider-Man Universe came tumbling down, the proposed Sinister Six movie has been given the bootagain. Its assumed that Gargan is still incarcerated, but even with Destin Daniel Crettons Spider-Man 4 on the way, it feels like a slim chance well see him again.Doc Samson (Ty Burrell)While Captain America: Brave New World showed that The Incredible Hulk is still relevant, that film includes a character even more forgotten than Tim Blake Nelsons Samuel Sterns. Modern Familys Ty Burrell played Dr. Leonard Samson in Louis Leterriers movie, although it was a massive departure from the comics. Comic book Doc Samson was exposed to similar gamma radiation to Bruce Banner, but by receiving a smaller dose, he gained superhuman strength and green hairfor some reason.Burrells version of Doc Samson was a simple psychiatrist who didnt get blasted with gamma, and to make matters worse, almost all of his scenes were cut. Leterrier has openly spoken about how hed planned a sequel with Grey and Red Hulk, so its possible that Doc Samson wouldve had a bigger part to play further down the line. Unfortunately, while Burrell said hed wanted to play the superpowered version of Samson, being a minor character in a largely forgotten MCU movie means theres not much chance of seeing him again.Dr. Helen Cho (Claudia Kim)One of the MCUs most infamous forgotten faces is Claudia Kims Dr. Helen Cho. Despite only appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Chos brilliant mind made her responsible for creating Vision. Sadly, her work with vibranium largely led to her being a convenient plot device to help set up Black Panther. Appearing in just a handful of scenes, Cho was last seen at the Avengers compound. Given that it was destroyed in Avengers: Endgame, we hope she got out alive.Simply, Age of Ultrons massive ensemble already meant that a non-Avenger like Cho was fighting against some much bigger characters. While it wouldve been easy to bring Cho back in something like WandaVision as a member of SWORD, her fate remains unknown both pre and post-Snap. Chos comic backstory of being Amadeus Chos mother might suggest a reprieve, but with Brave New World reportedly cutting Logan Kims portrayal of the young Hulk genius, it takes us one step further from Helens long-awaited return.Eros (Harry Styles)Even though the surprise was spoiled ahead of time, the addition of Harry Styles to the already star-studded Eternals was quite the coup. Playing Eros of Titan, Styles character is better known as Starfox, boasting powers ranging from super speed to the ability to induce euphoria. It always seemed strange to introduce the younger brother of Thanos some two years after the Mad Titan was dusted in Avengers: Endgame, but with a complicated family tree, it was a neat setup for this more cosmic branch of the MCU.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Speaking to MTV News in 2022, MCU overlord Kevin Feige teased Eros return and said the spacefaring adventures of Starfox and Patton Oswalts Pip the Troll are something hes looking forward to. As we head into Doomsday and Secret Wars, theres no sign of either or a real way to bring them back into the fold. More worrying is the fact that Starfox appeared in Marvels What If? An Immersive Story on Apple Vision Pro, with someone else voicing the character. Styles has raised his acting profile in the likes of Dunkirk and Dont Worry Darling, but his stint in the MCU might be a short one.Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh)James Gunn went out on a limb when he helmed 2014s Guardians of the Galaxy, taking a relatively obscure superhero team and giving them their own time to shine. Although going with the newer lineup instead of the classic comic book roster was another gamble, its now hard to imagine the MCU without that rag-tag gaggle of rogues. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fleshed out the teams backstory and went on to confirm they werent necessarily the first iteration of the team.Following the introduction of Sylvester Stallones Stakar Ogord, the sequel also briefly showed off Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Krugarr, and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus). Stallone and Rosenbaum returned for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and although Aleta is the adoptive sister of Stakar, who also takes on the mantle of Starhawk in the comics, the character will likely be recast or completely abandoned. Yeoh pulled double duty in the MCU, playing Ying Nan in Shang Chi. A variant of Ying Nan (voiced by Michelle Wong) appeared in What If?, while Aleta Ogord hasnt been mentioned since 2017.Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell)While Jon Favreaus Iron Man is praised as one of the MCUs best movies, the less said about Iron Man 2, the better. Despite Mickey Rourkes grating accent as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash and a bizarre Elon Musk cameo, at least Iron Man 2 made the most of Sam Rockwells enigmatic performance as the sleazy Justin Hammer. Effectively a budget version of Robert Downey Jr.s Tony Stark, the head of Hammer Industries became the movies main adversary and ended up being incarcerated for his crimes before the final credits rolled. It couldve been easy to leave Hammer there, but in the aftermath of Iron Man 3s hated Mandarin twist, the All Hail the King one-shot hoped to kill two birds with one stone by redeeming both maligned movies. Rockwell briefly appeared in the same prison as Ben Kingsleys Trevor Slattery, but whereas the latter went on to return for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Hammer has been left to rot. Kevin Feige was asked years ago whether Hammer could return in a Reddit AMA, adding: I love bringing back characters people think theyve seen the last of.Iron Fist (Finn Jones)Charlie Cox is suiting up once again to play Matt Murdock/Daredevil, but with Netflixs Daredevil series being a rare diamond in the rough, many assumed this was always going to be the case. Now that its been confirmed that Daredevil is canon in the MCU and not set in some alternate reality where Cox is returning as a variant, its raised questions about the other Netflix shows. The streaming giant tried to build its own expanded universe of street-level heroes, but as The Defenders proves, it wasnt exactly a hit.Out of all the Netflix shows, Iron Fist took the biggest pummeling. From lackluster villains to accusations of poor racial optics, many were amazed that Iron Fist got renewed for a second season as it limped toward the end of its 23-episode run. Jon Bernthal is confirmed to return as Frank Castle/the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again, while there are rumors that Krysten Ritter will be back as Jessica Jones in season 2. Finn Jones told The Nerd Shepherd in 2024 how hed love to return, but for the foreseeable future, Danny Rand remains an annexed part of the forgotten MCU.Nova Prime (Glenn Close)Another high-profile casting for the cosmic arm of the MCU was Glenn Close as Nova Prime. Gunn packed a lot into his first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but with a good portion of it taking place on Xandar, there was plenty of room for Close as the head of the Nova Corps. The character didnt appear beyond the climactic battle at the end of the first movie, although its presumed that Nova Prime died when Thanos stormed Xandar during Avengers: Infinity War.Despite it never being shown on-screen, a 45-minute scene depicting the decimation of Xandar was shot and then cut from Infinity War, presumably showing the death of many Nova Corps members. Richard Rider/Nova is still MIA in the MCU, with Gunn saying he kept him out of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies because the character is too important. Unfortunately, the reported cancellation of the planned Nova series has scuppered plans for his introduction and a potential return for Close as Nova Prime.Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg)The MCU has come up with some great original characters, with none standing out quite like Clark Greggs Phil Coulson. From being a kind-hearted Captain America fan to briefly becoming the Ghost Rider, and then a robot, Coulson has had quite a ride. Before he was leading Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulsons big moment was his death in Avengers. In typical Marvel style, this death was temporary, although he was later killed (again) in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 and returned as a Life Model Decoy.Gregg did appear in Captain Marvel, but with it being a prequel and Joss Whedon saying Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isnt considered canon with The Avengers, hes technically still dead in the modern MCU. The man himself has teased a potential return, telling the Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Podcast, [Coulson isnt dead] in every timeline! The MCU has already leaned into this when Gregg provided his vocals for What If?. Still, theres no sign of a more permanent return of a live-action Phil Coulson.

  • Seven Malicious Go Packages Found Deploying Malware on Linux and macOS Systems
    thehackernews.com
Mar 05, 2025Ravie LakshmananOpen Source / MalwareCybersecurity researchers are alerting of an ongoing malicious campaign targeting the Go ecosystem with typosquatted modules that are designed to deploy loader malware on Linux and Apple macOS systems."The threat actor has published at least seven packages impersonating widely used Go libraries, including one (github[.]com/shallowmulti/hypert) that appears to target financial-sector developers," Socket researcher Kirill Boychenko said in a new report."These packages share repeated malicious filenames and consistent obfuscation techniques, suggesting a coordinated threat actor capable of pivoting rapidly."While all of them continue to be available on the official package repository, their corresponding GitHub repositories barring "github[.]com/ornatedoctrin/layout" are no longer accessible. The list of offending Go packages is below -shallowmulti/hypert (github.com/shallowmulti/hypert)shadowybulk/hypert (github.com/shadowybulk/hypert)belatedplanet/hypert (github.com/belatedplanet/hypert)thankfulmai/hypert (github.com/thankfulmai/hypert)vainreboot/layout (github.com/vainreboot/layout)ornatedoctrin/layout (github.com/ornatedoctrin/layout)utilizedsun/layout (github.com/utilizedsun/layout)The counterfeit packages, Socket's analysis found, contain code to achieve remote code execution. This is achieved by running an obfuscated shell command to retrieve and run a script hosted on a remote server ("alturastreet[.]icu"). In a likely effort to evade detection, the remote script is not fetched until an hour has elapsed. The end goal of the attack is to install and run an executable file that can potentially steal data or credentials. The disclosure arrived a month after Socket revealed another instance of a software supply chain attack targeting the Go ecosystem via a malicious package capable of granting the adversary remote access to infected systems."The repeated use of identical filenames, array-based string obfuscation, and delayed execution tactics strongly suggests a coordinated adversary who plans to persist and adapt," Boychenko noted."The discovery of multiple malicious hypert and layout packages, along with multiple fallback domains, points to an infrastructure designed for longevity, enabling the threat actor to pivot whenever a domain or repository is blacklisted or removed."Found this article interesting? • Review: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster (Switch) - Two Of The PS1's Best RPGs Beautifully Preserved, For The Most Part
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube797kFew RPGs, or video games, deal with war and hope in the face of tyranny like the Suikoden series. Konamis prime RPG series, created by the late, great Yoshitaka Muriyama, is beloved by those who have played them particularly the first two. Theyre about the underdogs, about those who want better for their country, and not at the cost of a life. In the face of war, we push back against tyrannical empires and oppressive governments in order to give the people, and the oppressed, hope and a better life. But Suikoden isnt just about war. As is written in the Chinese epic The Water Margin, on which Suikoden is loosely based: A close neighbor means more than a distant relative. These games are all about interpersonal relationships and conflicts between friends and family, and they never shy away from the morally grey. But when ideals are challenged and faith is shaken, how does one maintain those bonds? Suikoden manages to balance topics of oppression, racism, politics, and familial relationships and friendships with delicacy and heart.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)Released on the PlayStation in 1995 and 1998 respectively, theres a timelessness and relevance to Suikoden I and II that still feels important. These are two excellently-paced, snappy RPGs that go by in the blink of an eye. And with Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, they feel smoother and snappier than ever before. The HD Remaster is based on the Japan-exclusive PSP port of the first two games, and includes all of the bug fixes and improvements there, such as eight-directional movement, widescreen support, movie galleries, and a place to listen to both games beautiful soundtracks. And you can also dash right from the get-go without the need for the Holy Rune. These are, largely, the very same games from the '90s, but thats by no means a bad thing. Auto-battle and (later on) fast travel come as standard, but the Remaster adds a few new features to the package. You can speed up combat at the press of a button or two presses once youve recruited a certain character. The menus have all been tidied, its much easier to compare characters equipment when buying new gear, and both games' localisations have been cleaned up, particularly notable in Suikoden II, which suffered from some often-criticised mistranslations.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)The visual department, however, is where both Suikoden I and II have received the biggest glow-up. All of the backgrounds from battle arenas, towns, and even the world map have been improved dramatically, and everywhere looks fantastic. This hasnt come at the cost of the beautiful sprite work either, which the improved lighting and colours have enhanced. These are not the vaseline-filtered sprites were used to seeing in some other HD Remasters. And all of the character portraits have been improved, too, most notably in Suikoden I, where character artist Junko Kawano has returned to breathe new life into her work. Both games look absolutely fantastic on Switch, particularly on an OLED. This is the way to play them, in our book, even if the Switch versions run at 30fps. And there are very few performance issues, though only in Suikoden II in scenes where theres lots of fire or some extremely long spell animations. There are a couple of baffling changes (or lack of changes) that are either present or missing in the HD Remaster. First, inventory management in Suikoden I is a chore. Every character has their own inventory, most of which will be taken up by equipped armor and accessories, and theres no shared inventory for items or spare equipment like in the sequel.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)Less annoyingly, though still notable, fast-forward in combat also speeds up the battle music, something we hope Konami will fix. And fast-forward is only available in standard combat, meaning if you want to run on the world map, you still need to add a certain Star of Destiny to your party. But perhaps the weirdest thing is the addition of autosave, which youd think is a godsend but is actually pretty poorly implemented here. Autosave only activates when you walk into a screen with a Journeymans Orb, a save point. With a few long stretches of battles and dungeons, and some particularly finicky character recruitments in Suikoden II, this can actually hinder progress. Its only useful in a few instances where you cant reach the save point on a screen before a forced battle, but these are few and far between. These issues dont really take away from the games themselves, however, and both play excellently to this day. Suikodens simple turn-based combat is elevated by its speed and its variety of characters, and youll need to select just where in your lineup each character stands. Short-ranged characters can only attack in the front row, while Medium and Long-ranged can go from the back. Certain combinations of characters have Unite Attacks, which use both characters' turns but also allows them to do devastating attacks to either a single foe or enemy group.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)The Runes also have multiple uses some give characters access to magic or special attacks that allow them to hit multiple times, while others provide them with status effects that enhance attack or deal poison or elemental damage. Not all characters can equip Runes, and in Suikoden II, multiple characters get access to multiple Rune Slots, allowing you to customise your party in multiple different ways.Turn-based combat isnt the only way to do battle. In both games, youll also need to take part in one-on-one duels where you have to learn how to react to your opponent depending on what they say in a rock-paper-scissors style format. Attack beats Defense, Defense beats Special Attack, Special Attack beats Attack. These are incredibly cool and always come at poignant moments in the narrative, adding to the weight of the story. Then there are the Army Battles, which vary between Suikoden I and II. In I, that rock-paper-scissors formula carries over, but with Attack, Ranged, and Magic. Some characters have abilities that allow you to see what the opposing army is going to do next, or you can use other characters to buff certain attacks. Its simple, but effective.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)Suikoden IIs army battles, however, play out like a miniature strategy RPG. Many of these are scripted, with most fights highlighting the sheer gulf between your own rebel army and the Highland Kingdoms forces. That can be pretty frustrating, and some of these battles are a little slow, but narratively, they work. Then theres also the series defining trait, the 108 Stars of Destiny, which embodies the series focus on communities and the power of unity. Once you get a castle, you can start recruiting an army of characters to either help you in combat or live at your base to help out in other ways, such as running shops, opening a bath house, growing crops, or even running a restaurant. Some of the event triggers for these, mostly in Suikoden II, are frustratingly vague, so without a guide, you'll struggle to get all 108. But it still never gets old watching your base expand and fill up over time.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)What impressed us most about revisiting these games isnt just how well theyve both stood the test of time, but just how ambitious they are, and how effectively both games fulfill that ambition. Suikoden might be simplistic on the surface, but it laid the foundation for the rest of the series that was largely unshaken for five mainline entries. Suikoden II then took that formula and ran with it, improving it in almost every single way. It truly deserves its status as one of the best RPGs of all time.ConclusionWhile not as feature-rich as some collections, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars proves that these RPGs have largely stood the test of time. While the issues with this remaster dont take away too much from the original games' brilliance, we think these classics deserve the very best. Boasting ambition, narrative stakes, and heart that few other RPGs of the time can muster, Suikoden burns bright in its origins, and we hope Konami sees just how important this series is to many and makes a handful of tweaks.New upgraded visuals are beautifulFast-forward makes combat even snappierFantastic narratives, particularly Suikoden IIAmbitious and variedRecruiting 108 Stars of Destiny is delightfulAutosave implementation is bafflingInventory management in Suikoden I is still painfulRecruitment quirks and slow army battles still present issuesGreat 8/10 Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. • From high school science project to $18.3M: AI-accelerated enzymes are coming for fast fashions plastic waste
    techcrunch.com
A U.K. startup, originating from founder Jacob Nathans high school science project on using enzymes to break down plastic waste, has secured an oversubscribed $18.3 million in Series A funding.Founded in 2019 in London, Epoch Biodesign now a 30+ strong multidisciplinary team of chemists, biologists and software engineers. It will be using the new funding to scale up production of their plastic-eating enzymes. This means transferring the biorecycling process from the labs where theyve been developing it to their first production facility this year, which he says will be able to gobble through 150 tonnes per year of waste once its up and running.Thereafter, the first production runs of commercial-scale capacity are expected by 2028 if not sooner, as Nathan says the startup is looking for ways to accelerate the scaling. Theyll be roughly doubling the size of the team over the next 12 months as they work on switching to a higher gear, he tells TechCrunch.Plastic not-so-fantasticStepping back for a second, the worlds plastic waste problem is staggeringly vast, with some 400 million tonnes of the stuff produced annually, according to the UN. Only a tiny fraction of which gets recycled currently being as, in crude cost terms, its far cheaper to pump out more virgin plastic than deal with processing the stuff weve already produced. At the same time, the environmental and health costs of unchecked plastic pollution are stark. So there is growing pressure on regulators to act on plastic pollution and on businesses that use plastic in their products to clean up their act. There are also a growing number of startups working on technologies targeting plastic waste from various angles including startups applying AI to speed up sorting plastics for recycling and others developing non-fossil fuel-based plastic alternatives. But biorecycling, so leaning on biological entities to help break down resistant waste, is where Epoch Biodesign hopes to make its mark on plastics. The biotech is developing a library of plastic-eating enzymes with the goal of disrupting the plastic pollution cycle by powering up biorecycling-based circularity starting with a handful of plastics that are used in common synthetic fabrics. The first materials theyve developed enzymes to tackle are polyester and two types of nylon (nylon 6 and nylon 66). A graphical animation of the process on its website depicts waste garments going in at one end, being industrially sorted and/or pre-treated, depolymerized, purified and repolymerized, and then ready-to-use nylon (extrusion) or polyester (pellets) coming out the other end. GenAI to the rescue? While some plastic-eating enzymes have been discovered existing in nature, the catch is they are very slow at digesting this stuff far too slow to help humanity escape its plastic waste mountain on any useful timescale. Its also the case that we have produced far more types of plastics than enzymes have been found in the wild that can break them down, as yet. And as the plastic keeps piling up, the need for speed increases.Epoch wants to lend a helping hand to evolutionary ingenuity by using technology tools to accelerate the discovery of biological catalysts that can tackle plastic waste fast. And key to unlocking this mission are developments in generative AI specifically the rise of powerful large language models (LLMs) that are helping accelerate the search for biological agents that can be precision targeted at this problem. The challenge with biology is that its just too complicated, explains Nathan. Humans dont understand how it works. Well never be able to rationalize it. Most of these biological questions that we have remain unanswered. So the big shift here has been our ability to understand large, complex data-sets which is effectively AI.Were just sort of un-baking the cake and then putting things back together at the other end, he also says of what this biorecycling process boils down to. He adds that it only takes a matter of hours to go from waste fabrics to reclaiming molecularly identical material (nylon or polyester) in a form thats ready for reusing to make new clothes or other products. He describes enzyme design as a ridiculously large search problem to tackle. But by turning to GenAI, the startups scientists have essentially been able to shortcut sifting through possible combinations of amino acid and proteins to land on potentially useful agents fine-tuning LLMs with information on proteins and amino acids but also feeding in proprietary data from its own lab work on plastic-eating enzymes.Weve been able to generate tens of thousands of plastic-eating enzymes in our lab that are unique, he says, explaining that after querying the AI models to yield promising candidates they switch to lab tests and then feed in more data from their results on the predicted enzymes to keep iterating the model until the search turns up an enzyme that performs in the way that we want. What were effectively doing is were concentrating hundreds of millions of years, billions of years of evolution into a few cycles in the lab that happen over the course of days, weeks, months, he adds. Were making big evolutionary jumps that would be very unlikely to happen just naturally based on random mutations, natural selection.Epochs AI-driven enzyme design search has also enabled it to pretty regularly get speed improvements on enzymes in the region of 25x, according to Nathan. That means we can use less enzyme in our process, he notes. We can make less of it. The [capital expenditure] associated with manufacturing that enzyme in the first place goes down. And ultimately, all of that translates into a lower cost of goods for output. Were not the only company out there which is trying to design biology to do different things but we really think were quite unique in the approach were taking in applying these tool sets to recycling and then to our flavor of recycling: biorecycling, he adds.Focus on cost and commercial scaleSo far, the startup has built three best-in-class processes to recycle three very chemically distinct types of plastics and scaling those to commercially useful volumes is next on the slate with the new Series A cash. Were building our first production facility in the U.K. this year for our first nylon process, he says, claiming: These technologies use entirely new biochemistries. They completely shift the cost bases of recycling into new areas that basically makes recycling the cheaper option compared to virgin. A key part of why Epoch is able to drive down recycling costs is the fact its process doesnt require high temperatures to run saving on energy costs compared to other forms of recycling which require the waste to be heated and/or melted. Nathan also points out that this means a lower capex for this (lower power) recycling facility shrinking overall project costs. The biological recycling process is also incredibly high yield compared to industrial recycling he says theyre getting upwards of 90%, meaning most of the waste thats fed in is coming back out the other end in a reusable state.Plus, theres no unwanted side products from biorecycling which, again, reduces the cost and complexity of recycling the plastic. All of these things add up, basically, to reduce cost across the board of the process and get us into a position where at that commercial scale were reaching cost competitiveness with the materials that are on the market today made from fossil carbon, he suggests. Production of the enzyme itself involves a microorganism thats been genetically engineered to include the DNA for making the enzyme and housed in a fermenter so it can replicate and churn out lots of the plastic digesting stuff a synthetic biology technique thats used for many other types of applications, from producing chemicals to novel foods.Epochs approach to recycling plastic could have some additional benefits as Nathan suggests it could incorporate additional purification by having the enzymes also scrub undesirable chemicals since some plastics contain chemicals that can cause concerns for recycling the material. Although he concedes that even biorecycling of plastics wont fix the problem of microplastics where tiny pieces of plastic can wash out of garments that are made from synthetic fabrics and find their way into the environment posing a hazard to biological life.Still, he argues were going to be stuck needing to use synthetic plastic for decades, adding: I think its really important that that new synthetic plastic is made from old materials, not from newly extracted fossil carbon.Designing enzymes to digest other types of plastic waste such as packaging is a wider goal for the startup. Although Nathan says they are focused on fabrics first as its a huge problem thats also been getting more public attention. The business case also looks cleaner. Notably, the startups Series A includes a strategic investment by Spanish fast fashion giant Inditex, owner of clothing brand Zara, which has inked a multi-year joint development agreement withEpoch clearly with an eye on improving the sustainability of its business at a time of rising public awareness vis-a-vis the fashion industrys role in the global plastic crisis. We want to produce material thats actually useful, notes Nathan. We want to produce something for brands that is, you know, indistinguishable from the stuff that theyre using today so in order for that to be true, we need to go through various tests. We need to do this at larger and larger and larger scale. And so having, effectively, the machinery of a business like Inditex with the scale that they have just helps us accelerate that process. The Series A round is led by the climate-focused fund Extantia Capital, with Day One Ventures, Happiness Capital, Kibo Invest, Lowercarbon Capital and others also participating alongside Inditex, and a $1M grant from the U.K. government. Epoch Biodesigns total capital raised to date is now $34 million, including the latest raise.
