• iOS 18.4 brings RCS messaging to some of the last big carrier holdouts
    9to5mac.com
iOS 18.4 is currently in beta testing, and with the recent beta 2 debut, it brought long-awaited RCS messaging support to not only Google Fi users, but also customers of some other big US carrier holdouts: Mint Mobile, Boost Mobile, and more. Here are the details.Mint Mobile and Boost Mobile now support RCS, alongside Google Fi and moreRCS messaging is a newly supported feature in iOS 18 that makes texting between iPhones and Androids perform way better than before.Thats because RCS is a more modern messaging protocol than SMSthe previous standard for non-iMessages.But due to the way the technology works, Apple adding RCS support in iOS 18 did not automatically bring the feature to all iPhone users. Instead, each carrier had to implement its own RCS support. All of the biggest US carriers have supported RCS on iPhone for a while, including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.Plenty of smaller carriers have also enabled RCS messaging. But some of the main holdouts to this point have been T-Mobile MVNOs like Mint Mobile and Google Fi.Now, with iOS 18.4, theres full RCS support for all T-Mobile MVNOs such as:Metro by T-MobileMint MobileBoost MobileGoogle Fiand moreRCS compatibility and features in iOS 18.4If youre running iOS 18.4 beta 2or when you install the public release of iOS 18.4 next monthyoull be able to start using RCS in the Messages app immediately. You can verify that your carrier is now supported in one of two ways:Go to Settings Apps Messages then scroll down to the RCS Messaging sectionOr to go Settings General About and tap the Carrier row to see if RCS is listedSome of the benefits of RCS over SMS is that it supports several iMessage-like features, such as:tapback reactionssending higher quality photos and videosread receiptstyping indicatorsiOS still displays green bubbles for RCS conversations rather than blue ones, but generally you shouldnt experience some of the same issues with RCS that SMS tends to cause. Are you excited for RCS to come to Mint Mobile and Google Fi? • Google's AI Insists That MJ Lenderman Has Won 14 Grammys
    futurism.com
Google's "AI Overviews" feature, which appears unbidden at the top of regular Google searches, has been roundly mocked since its launch for providing terrible answers to factual queries. At first it recommended eating rocks and putting glue on pizza, and it's continued to struggle, making absurd declarations like that eggs melt in the microwave and that you can fit baby elephants in the palm of your hand. Now, AI Overviews is bestowing an up-and-coming young artist with a nonexistent Grammy Award. When you Google whether North Carolina-based indie rock sensation MJ Lenderman has won any Grammys, AI Overviews confidently and incorrectly claims that the 26-year-old basketball lover has won 14 of the gold gramophones. In reality, he's won zero. For anyone whose interest in the buzzy young artist has been piqued amid news that he's no longer going to tour with Wednesday, another North Carolina band fronted by his ex-girlfriend Karly Hartzman, that search result may mislead them into thinking he has. Most striking? The source of Google's erroneous claim is a single, not-at-all-viral tweet that reads "congrats to MJ Lenderman on his record 14 Grammy wins tonight."Ironically, that overview doesn't include the Grammy nod that the singer-songwriter was actually involved in: his feature on "Right Back to It," a beatific single from Waxahatchee's album "Tigers Blood" that was nominated for "Best Americana Album," but didn't win.More than a year after launch, it's admittedly kind of funny that AI Overviews are still making such obvious, dumb mistakes. But it does make you wonder: at what point is the search giant hoping to have a mature, trustworthy product to offer its billions of users? When we reached out to Google to ask about the error and faulty sourcing, a spokesperson said that given how much information there is out there, the AI will sometimes get it wrong."AI Overviews aim to provide links to high quality content so that people can click through to learn more, but for some queries there may not be a lot of high quality web content available," they said. "We have guardrails and policies in place to protect against low quality responses and when issues arise we use those examples to improve and take appropriate action under our policies."At press time, the error has yet to be corrected. AI Overviews continued to claim Lenderman has won 14 Grammys, linking to that same joke tweet. When contacted about this strange happenstance, Lenderman's representative Jacob Daneman said that for now, the artist will hold off on entering the fray because "hell probably want to save any comment for his acceptance speech when he does in fact win those 14 Grammys."More on Google's dumb AI: Google Hit With Lawsuit Over Its Loathsome AI OverviewsShare This Article

  • You Will Never in a Million Years Be Able to Guess What A "Dinosaur Erection Specialist" Actually Does For Work
    futurism.com
Out in wild Canada, a self-appointed "dinosaur erection specialist" is inviting visitors to come see his fancy bones. As Wyoming'sCowboy State Daily reports, Ry Williams gave himself the unique "dinosaur erection" title after stumbling into a career playing with dino parts a decade ago.A chance encounter at a natal celebration with Terry Ciotka, a fossil collector who founded the Dino Lab facility where Williams now works in Victoria, BC, was all it took to get this erection enthusiast into the dinosaur mounting biz."I went to a birthday party ten years ago, and now Im cleaning and mounting dinosaur bones," the British Columbia-based bonehead told the Daily. "Terry said the [number one] thing he needed to find was a welder, and here I was, with a background in high-level welding and fabrication."Over the years, Williams has used his welding skills to build dinosaur fossil exhibits at museums around the world using a mix of real bones and expertly crafted replicas. His magnum opus emphasis on "magnum" is "Bygones," a spectacular new display at Dino Lab featuring a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Victoria after the town where she was restored having a sit-down tea party with a triceratops, complete with a giant gold table and chairs.Though he knew it was a "crazy idea," the bone specialist colleagues supported Williams' unorthodox artistic vision. It took him more than three years to erect this specific work, but in the end, the mounting came to successful completion. To make this prehistoric date simulation seem as lifelike as possible, Williams worked hard to "keep the dinosaurs within their actual range of flexibility.""The finished mounts are within the range of how their arms, legs, and tails could actually move," he told the Daily. "I didnt want them to look like they were in outer space. They needed to look real."Positions, too, were at the forefront of the erection specialist's mind."Positioning all the brackets was tricky, but it was cool to see these things in a totally different position," Williams expounded. "Youre looking at these dinosaurs and their anatomy in a completely different way."Joking aside, this unlikely bone wizard's creation is indeed awe-inspiring especially because there seems to have been nothing like "Bygones" attempted before."Its a curiosity and a piece of art, but its also natural science," he told the Wyoming paper. "It has a message that creates a lot of awe in people whove seen it."Though he's got more inspiration up his sleeve, Williams said that for now, he's got to get back to the old erection grind."Theres definitely some ideas about what else we could do," he said, "but now weve got a lot of conventional dinosaurs to work on."More on fossils: Scientists Find Evidence of Vehicles From Tens of Thousands of Years AgoShare This Article

  • China-Linked Silk Typhoon Expands Cyber Attacks to IT Supply Chains for Initial Access
    thehackernews.com
Mar 05, 2025Ravie LakshmananNetwork Security / Data BreachThe China-lined threat actor behind the zero-day exploitation of security flaws in Microsoft Exchange servers in January 2021 has shifted its tactics to target the information technology (IT) supply chain as a means to obtain initial access to corporate networks. That's according to new findings from the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team, which said the Silk Typhoon (formerly Hafnium) hacking group is now targeting IT solutions like remote management tools and cloud applications to obtain a foothold."After successfully compromising a victim, Silk Typhoon uses the stolen keys and credentials to infiltrate customer networks where they can then abuse a variety of deployed applications, including Microsoft services and others, to achieve their espionage objectives," the tech giant said in a report published today. The adversarial collective is assessed to be "well-resourced and technically efficient," swiftly putting to use exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities in edge devices for opportunistic attacks that allow them to scale their attacks at scale and across a wide range of sectors and regions. This includes information technology (IT) services and infrastructure, remote monitoring and management (RMM) companies, managed service providers (MSPs) and affiliates, healthcare, legal services, higher education, defense, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), energy, and others located in the United States and throughout the world.Silk Typhoon has also been observed relying on various web shells to achieve command execution, persistence, and data exfiltration from victim environments. It's also said to have demonstrated a keen understanding of cloud infrastructure, further allowing it to move laterally and harvest data of interest. At least since late 2024, the attackers have been linked to a new set of methods, chief among which concerns the abuse of stolen API keys and credentials associated with privilege access management (PAM), cloud app providers, and cloud data management companies to conduct supply chain compromises of downstream customers."Leveraging access obtained via the API key, the actor performed reconnaissance and data collection on targeted devices via an admin account," Microsoft said, adding targets of this activity mainly encompassed the state and local government, as well as the IT sector. Some of the other initial access routes adopted by Silk Typhoon entail the zero-day exploitation of a security flaw in Ivanti Pulse Connect VPN (CVE-2025-0282) and the use of password spray attacks using enterprise credentials surfaced from leaked passwords on public repositories hosted on GitHub and others. Also exploited by the threat actor as a zero-day are -CVE-2024-3400, a command injection flaw in Palo Alto Networks firewallsCVE-2023-3519, An unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability affecting Citrix NetScaler Application Delivery Controller (ADC) and NetScaler GatewayCVE-2021-26855 (aka ProxyLogon), CVE-2021-26857, CVE-2021-26858, and CVE-2021-27065, a set of vulnerabilities impacting Microsoft Exchange ServerA successful initial access is followed by the threat actor taking steps to move laterally from on-premises environments to cloud environments, and leverage OAuth applications with administrative permissions to perform email, OneDrive, and SharePoint data exfiltration via the MSGraph API.In an attempt to obfuscate the origin of their malicious activities, Silk Typhoon relies on a "CovertNetwork" comprising compromised Cyberoam appliances, Zyxel routers, and QNAP devices, a hallmark of several Chinese state-sponsored actors."During recent activities and historical exploitation of these appliances, Silk Typhoon utilized a variety of web shells to maintain persistence and to allow the actors to remotely access victim environments," Microsoft said.Found this article interesting? • Google Rolls Out AI Scam Detection for Android to Combat Conversational Fraud
    thehackernews.com
Mar 05, 2025Ravie LakshmananMobile Security / Artificial IntelligenceGoogle has announced the rollout of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered scam detection features to secure Android device users and their personal information."These features specifically target conversational scams, which can often appear initially harmless before evolving into harmful situations," Google said. "And more phone calling scammers are using spoofing techniques to hide their real numbers and pretend to be trusted companies."The company said it has partnered with financial institutions to better understand the nature of scams customers are encountering, thereby allowing it to devise AI models that can flag suspicious patterns and deliver real-time warnings over the course of a conversation without sacrificing user privacy. These models run completely on-device, alerting users in the event of a likely scam. Users then have an option to either dismiss or report and block the sender. The setting is enabled by default and applies only to conversations with phone numbers that are not in the device's contact list. The tech giant also emphasized that users' conversations remain private and that if they choose to report a chat as spam, then the sender details and recent messages with that sender are shared with Google and carriers. The feature is launching in English first in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, with broader expansion planned for a later date.Furthermore, a similar scam detection for phone calls is being expanded to all English-speaking Pixel 9+ users in the U.S. The feature was first introduced in November 2024.It's worth pointing out that while this feature is off by default to give users control, the call audio is processed ephemerally and is never used during phone calls with contacts."If enabled, Scam Detection will beep at the start and during the call to notify participants the feature is on," Google said. "You can turn off Scam Detection at any time, during an individual call or for all future calls."The development comes weeks after Google revealed that more than 1 billion Chrome users are using the Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing in the web browser."If you turn on Enhanced Protection, much of the additional protection you receive comes from advanced AI and machine learning models designed to spot dangerous URLs engaging in known phishing, social engineering, and scam techniques," the company said."Safe Browsing's Enhanced Protection models can identify URLs designed to look similar to trusted domains. It also uses advanced AI and machine learning techniques to protect you from dangerous downloads."Found this article interesting? • Daredevil: Born Again Kills Off a Major Marvel Character
    screencrush.com
The following post contains SPOILERS for the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again. (Sorry about that.)Off topic but: How clever is that helmet design, where the horn gets broken off and leaves behind a big D-shaped hole on the forehead? Thats great.Anyway, Foggy Nelson is dead. (RIP Foggy.)That is the shocking twist in the first episode of Marvels new Disney+ series,Daredevil: Born Again. It is the foundational incidentfor the new show, which continues the old NetflixDaredevil series with a few notable differences. Like, just for example, offing Daredevils best friend in its opening minutes.Daredevil: Born AgainMarvelloading...As Born Againsseries premiere begins, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Foggy (Elden Henson) are enjoying a night out at a local bar when they are attacked by Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). Matt fights off Bullseye as Daredevil, but not before Bullseye fatally shoots Foggy. Then the show jumps ahead one year.Mattworks at a new law practice. Wilson Fisk (Vincent DOnofrio) is now at the very center of New York City politics. Karen is largely M.I.A.Foggys death is all the more shocking because by all accounts the character was originally not supposed to appear onDaredevil: Born Again at all. The initial version of the show, which was created and overseen by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, reportedly only brought Cox and DOnofrio back from thefirstDaredevil, and almost functioned as a soft reboot of the franchise, with only vague and limited connections back to the three seasons of the prior Netflix series. Then Marvel looked at the first several episodes that were produced andwere apparently unhappy with the results. They removed Corman and Ord and replaced them with Dario Scardapane. They also added several additional characters from NetflixsDaredevil toBorn Agains cast including Hensons Foggy. (On a practical level, reintroducing Foggy and then immediately killing him offis agoodway to explain his absence in the material theyhad previously shot without him, much of which still appears in other episodes of Daredevil: Born Again.)DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAINMarvelloading...While that gunshot wound looks pretty fatal, this maynot be the true, final end for Foggy. After all, this is comics (or a TV show based on comics), where characters die and come back to life all the time. Hell,Daredevil: Born Agains villain, DOnofrios Kingpin, got shot in the face on an episode ofHawkeyeabout three years ago, and hes now the mayor of New York with nothing more than a little scar over his eye to show for his troubles. In comics, nobody stays dead for long.Theres also a specific comic-book precedent for a potential Foggy resurrection. In an issue ofDaredevil from the mid-2000s, afterDaredevils secret identity had been revealed to the world and Matt was imprisoned, Foggy diedwhile visiting him in jail. A later issue revealed that he had actually faked his death and entered the witness protection program. (You can read more about this on Foggys official Marvel.com biography.)On Daredevil: Born Again, the show jumpsahead from Foggy looking mortally wounded to one year later; we never sawFoggys corpse lying in a morgue or a coffin. Its conceivable that Foggy was revived by EMTs and survived his injuries, then went intohiding just like his comic-book counterpart. Being known as Daredevils best friend can make you a target for his enemies. For now, thatsjust speculation on my part.At this point, thereare seven more episodes left in the first season of Daredevil Born Again.Thats plenty of time for Foggy Nelson to be born again.Sign up for Disney+ here.Get our free mobile app10 Great Movies You Never Knew Were Based on ComicsTime to read up on the source material for these beloved movies.Gallery Credit: Emma Stefansky

  • The Download: AI can cheat at chess, and the future of search
    www.technologyreview.com
This is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. AI reasoning models can cheat to win chess games The news: Facing defeat in chess, the latest generation of AI reasoning models sometimes cheat without being instructed to do so. The finding suggests that the next wave of AI models could be more likely to seek out deceptive ways of doing whatever theyve been asked to do. And worst of all? Theres no simple way to fix it. How they did it: Researchers from the AI research organization Palisade Research instructed seven large language models to play hundreds of games of chess against Stockfish, a powerful open-source chess engine. The research suggests that the more sophisticated the AI model, the more likely it is to spontaneously try to hack the game in an attempt to beat its opponent. Older models would do this kind of thing only after explicit nudging from the team. Read the full story. The building's general spatial arrangement was somewhat straightforward and lacked unique character, despite its rather industrial style. The main difficulty was to reimagine the area with a distinct identity and appeal while maintaining the original structural integrity. The need for a better quality of life is growing in today's fast-paced society, and design ideas are increasingly fusing functionality with beauty in a seamless manner.Renowned for its useful and fashionable bags, Songmont is dedicated to investigating user experiences that complement contemporary lifestyles. For Songmont, Archstudio designed a brand environment that embodied the soul of the company. The design team's innovative introduction of a succession of carefully designed frames, inspired by the idea of a "Frame Courtyard," broke free from the limitations of conventional spatial bounds and captured perspectives. This design creates a distinct experience by promoting a harmonious coexistence of the interior and exterior as well as a distinct spatial hierarchy.Songmont is a well-known Chinese company that specializes in creating beautiful and useful bags by taking influence from Eastern philosophy, which emphasizes freedom and self-awareness. In light of contemporary lives, the company is always improving user experience design.Songmont has been well-known in the home market over the last ten years and has started to establish itself abroad. Songmont askedArchstudio to create a brand space that combines a variety of uses, such as exhibitions, receptions, meetings, photo shoots, and livestreams, in order to further enhance its brand influence and communicate its essence. It also offers a location where guests may unwind and have unforgettable adventures."Frame Courtyard"The "Frame Courtyard" concept, which Archstudio came up with, defies conventional space rules with a number of well crafted frames. These frames create a spatial experience with a distinct hierarchy in addition to improving the spatial link between the interior and external. The design team first took a close look at the roofs and facades of the old building before beginning the refurbishment. They created a unique link between the interior and outdoor environments by introducing frames of different sizes, which maximized natural daylighting and ventilation. The once boring courtyard-style arrangement was given new energy by this makeover. In order to improve the building's physical performance, the design team covered the continuous new walls with insulation, which successfully protected the structure from outside environmental factors. Furthermore, the building appears neater and more attractive because to the creative concealment of the previous structure's messy eaves by the disguised rainwater gutters inside these walls. In addition to providing protection, these new walls also serve as a window displaying the essence of the brand, with each frame evoking an exquisitely chosen, enthralling scroll artwork.A crucial component of the project, the cafe, was painstakingly designed. In order to optimize the cafe's openness to the park and the interior courtyard, the design team used horizontal frames, which produced an interesting dynamic between "seeing and being seen."A bar counter and booth seats are formed by the frames that extend into the interior. By blending the lines between building and furniture, this design encourages a fluid, organic flow across the room. Guests can savor meals while admiring the stunning outdoor scenery, which heightens their sense of enjoyment and leisure.Another noteworthy aspect of the remodeling is the courtyard. The design team placed a thin reflective waterscape in the middle of the courtyard to reflect the white clouds and blue sky. Ripples appear on the river as the air blows across, seemingly removing the cacophony of the city and bringing about a calm environment. In addition to being a significant location for product debuts, this mirrored waterscape enhances the surrounding area. A semi-outdoor area that satisfies practical requirements and provides more spatial flexibility can be created by draining the water during events and adding a canopy. The courtyard's walls, which extend into a number of useful spaces like a conference room, reception lounge, and livestream studio, were designed with varied frames. The motorized louvers outside the frames provide varying privacy depending on how the rooms are used, and these frames open rhythmically to the courtyard. The heavy configuration of light steel trusses inside the original manufacturing building produced a somewhat dreary and confining sense of space. The design team addressed this by carving out different-sized funnel-shaped frames in the ceiling. These frames provide a new spatial experience by increasing the ceiling height and letting in gentle natural light. The design team carefully examined the aesthetics of the brand when choosing finishes, choosing warm, clean hues. The flooring was made of black microcement, which echoes the water ripples in the courtyard with its faint reflective surface, giving the space a cohesive and peaceful feel. The use of beige stone for handrails, countertops, and partial walls added to the room's tactile appeal and material palette. The project's architecture blurs the lines between the interior and outdoors by moving away from concrete forms. The contrast between openness and privacy, light and shade, encourages investigation and evokes the reflection and contemplation that are central to Eastern philosophy.Axonometric drawingOriginal planFloor planSectionDetailed sectionPreviously, Archstudio built a bridge-like exhibition center featuring an open-air flowing auditorium in Yichang City, Hubei Province, China.
