Its Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams need I say more? The Last Songis middle-tier Sparks, but theres an argument that its in the top five. Miley Cyrus stars as Ronnie Miller, an unruly 17-year-old who has never recovered from her parents divorce three years prior.Ronnie is upset to learn that she and her younger brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) must live with her estranged father Steve (Greg Kinnear) for the summer in a small Georgia beach town. • Reddit is cracking down on users who upvote violent content

Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Reddit will now warn users about upvoting content that violates site rules.Reddit has one of the fastest-growing user bases of social sites.Tensions rose recently on Reddit over criticism of Elon Musk and posts about Luigi Mangione.Worried that upvoting a sensitive post on Reddit could get you in trouble? Now, it just might.Reddit's user base is growing rapidly as it is being hailed as one of the last truly "social" places online. Still, with growth comes volatility, and Reddit is now cracking down on users who interact with content that violates the site's rules. In a post on Wednesday, the site's administrators said that Reddit users who upvote "several pieces of content banned for violating our policies" within a short period will receive a warning. Reddit said it made the change because the site relies on "engaged users""Upvoting bad or violating content interferes with this system," the post says. The company says this policy is currently limited to a warning but is considering "adding additional actions down the road.""Voting comes with responsibility," the post says. "This will have no impact on the vast majority of users as most already downvote or report abusive content."One Reddit user said in a post on Friday that Reddit's description of "violent content" in the new policy seemed too broad."What if I strongly dislike a fictional character from a television show or video game and want to express that in a hyperbolic way?" the post reads. "Now we have to dance around what we say and be paranoid that we'll be banned?Reddit does have broad rules for violent content. Still, the site's policy says that users can post violent content if it is "educational, newsworthy, artistic, satire, documentary, etc."Last month, Reddit temporarily shut down the popular community r/whitepeopletwitter after several users made threatening comments against Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency.Tensions between Reddit users and Musk grew in January after the moderators of over 100 subreddits moved to ban links to X following Musk's speech at President Donald Trump's inauguration, where he made a gesture that some interpreted as a fascist salute.Reddit told BI at the time of the temporary ban that it wants its communities used for "civil discussion" and "one of the few places online where people can exchange ideas and perspectives.""We want to ensure that they continue to be a place for healthy debate no matter the topic," the company said in a statement. "Debate and dissent are welcome on Reddit threats and doxxing are not."However, Reddit's content moderation system has not been without flaws.Reddit moderatorssaid this week that the system flags the name "Luigi" for violent content, even when it is used in non-violent contexts. On Thursday, moderators for the popular subreddit r/popculture said they were forced to shut down the forum due to the censorship from Reddit's moderation system in a post.Reddit did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider about the content moderation system. A spokesperson for the company told The Verge that Reddit does not have a "sitewide filter for the word 'Luigi' or expectation that users stop talking about Luigi Mangione," according to the outlet.Luigi Mangione, 26, is the Ivy-league grad suspect charged with shooting and killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.Reddit told The Verge that r/popculture recently fell to just one moderator, allowing the subreddit to filter out potentially sensitive words automatically. The community's moderator told BI that they did not make a list of possibly sensitive words and said they think Reddit's content moderation is inconsistent."I've reported so many comments of people calling me or other people the f-slur, and Reddit tells me it doesn't violate their policies, but saying 'Luigi' does," the moderator said.Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, who left the company in 2020, said last week that he thinks the future of social media will be moderated by AI, where users have "sliders" to "choose their level of tolerance" about certain topics.

"Avengers: Doomsday" will hit theaters in May 2026 and "Avengers: Secret Wars" will premiere in May 2027.Also appearing were "The Mandalorian" creator Jon Favreau and a gaggle of pint-sized droids; Pete Docter, chief creative officer of Pixar; and Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios. Here are the biggest reveals from Disney's SXSW panel.Star WarsDisney shared that Walt Disney World's Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run attraction, where people get to see what it's like to ride in the iconic spaceship, would be getting an upgrade, with "a brand new story" about the film's characters. Execs described how they used artwork from the Star Wars universe to create a "fully immersive experience" where guests "are fully in control of their own destiny."Execs also hinted that Disney would extend Star Wars and other franchises online with its investment in Epic Games, the creator of "Fortnite." Meanwhile, Star Wars-inspired droidsPixarDocter shared two projects Pixar has in the works for Disney World: a land inspired by "Monsters, Inc." called Monstropolis and what was touted as Disney's first suspended roller coaster ride, which reimagines one of the movie's scenes.Another feature based on "Cars" will create an off-road attraction in a spin on the movie, taking riders geyser-dodging over rocky terrain.MarvelAt Disneyland, the Fantastic Four characters will visit the park this summer. The actor said he gave Disney's Imagineering team input about the ride, which will now include DUM-E, a nod to Tony Stark's robot assistant in the franchise.Disney's enduring franchisesBergman and D'Amaro, along with Dana Walden, Bergman's cochair, have both been floated as potentialsuccessors for Disney CEO Bob Iger.Their public appearances are regularly scrutinized for what they imply about who might be ahead in the succession race. Both men took turns finishing each other's sentences to emphasize that Disney's big, enduring franchises are the product of collaboration across teams and work enabled by technology but rooted in storytelling.According to Nielsen, Disney's streaming businesstrails digital giants YouTube and Netflixin terms of viewing time. But none matches Disney's franchise-building ability, which has spawned a diversified global entertainment empire."We truly have something for everyone, with so many ways to experience it," D'Amaro said, calling this an "unprecedented era" of creating attractions, shows, and games. "This also has strong connections with our audience, which is so unique to Disney. We're constantly developing new tools that allow us to tell our stories in even more compelling ways."Disney's behind-the-scenes look comes as one of its largest competitors, Universal, is also expanding domestically. This May, Universal Orlando Resorts' new theme park, Epic Universe, will welcome guests to explore five separate "worlds" including Super Nintendo World.Disney executives have navigated questions about how the arrival of Epic Universe could impact the company, including during a 2024 earnings call when CFO Hugh Johnston said it could be "beneficial.""The early bookings that we have next summer are actually positive," Johnston said.

I miss console wars and how they made gaming more exciting Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished March 9, 2025 1:00am Three consoles but no rivalries (Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft)A reader regrets the end of the rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation and suggests that console wars are actually good for everyone. For better or worse we are approaching the start of another generation of consoles. I think, overall, its for the best because, lets face it, this generation has been pretty bad. Especially if you count the Switch as having been last gen. Theres been no shortage of great games but the people in charge of publishers have completely lost the plot, to the point where Ive got no confidence in their ability to lead and to not nosedive the whole industry into the ground.Almost immediately we have seen what happens when there is no major competition for PlayStation. Theres a lot of reasons for them going radio silent but I think one of the main ones is that thats the time that it became obvious Xbox had not only lost the console war but were no longer competing on the same level as PlayStation.Sure, Xbox may be the biggest publisher in the world now but that doesnt mean anything to Sony, any more than it mattered whether Activision or EA were the biggest beforehand. Nintendo and Sony have never really been rivals, even in the early days, and it also doesnt whether PlayStation or Nintendo are selling more because theyre not competing for the same audience. As of right now there is no console war. The Nintendo Switch is on its last legs and no longer really a factor. The Xbox Series X/S has been a complete failure and Microsoft is going all out on releasing games multiformat. Well probably have Gears Of War on PlayStation 5 before the end of the year and I doubt itll be much longer before theres Halo and Fable too. Forza Horizon 5 is already confirmed to be on its way.Microsoft says they have a next gen console in development but I find it very hard to imagine its going to be anything other than a novelty, not unless it has exclusive games which would go against everything else Xbox has been doing for over a year now.You cant have a console war without direct competition and I dont think theres going to be any in the new generation. Maybe, if the Switch 2 is more powerful than we think and gets the majority of third party games, but as long as its not getting GTA 6, Assassins Creed, The Witcher 4 and the other big names I dont think its going to make much difference. My problem with this new situation is two-fold. The serious reason is that without direct competition companies, Sony in this case, can do whatever they want with no one to provide a better deal. Increasing prices, decreasing console and subscription features, making less exclusives they can do all that without anyone to do the opposite and attract disgruntled customers. Forza is on the horizon for PS5 (Microsoft)But the thing that upsets me the most is that console wars were fun. Not if you took them too seriously and turned into some internet tryhard but ordinary, normal rivalries are fun. Its like supporting a football team. Just because a tiny minority are hooligans it doesnt mean everyone else isnt having fun egging on friendly competition. It helped make both formats better too. The best example is the Xbox 360 era, when Microsoft and Sony were almost perfectly balanced. Xbox put in a ton of work to become a contender, putting out not just great games but revolutionary ideas for online support and downloadable games.Sony was slow to respond but when they did they fully embraced online (which they would never have done so quickly if Xbox wasnt pushing them) and upped their game in terms of exclusives. By the end of the generation, they were both equal and the reward for ordinary fans was tons of great games and services and some fun drama between the fans and companies.I had an Xbox 360 at the start of that generation and I got a PlayStation 3 at the end, just to play its exclusives. I didnt hate PlayStation, I enjoyed trolling its fans and then joined them first chance I got. I think thats how most people are. But now that whole culture has disappeared.More TrendingTheres zero point getting an Xbox Series X/S and I doubt there will be for the next one either. Ill probably get a Switch 2 at some point but its success, or otherwise, isnt going to change Sonys attitude. We needed Xbox for that but thats not what they do anymore, and I think its a real shame.By reader Stratos A new generation is about to begin (Nintendo)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. • Jackie and Shadows third eaglet has landed
    www.popsci.com
Following the successful hatchings of two little eaglets this week, a third egg has hatched for internet-famous bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow. The third eaglet arrived before 6:13 a.m. PST on March 8.The third pip was confirmed on March 6 at 10:21 a.m. PST, only a few days after its older siblings emerged from their shells. Thousands around the world have been tuning into the livestream on YouTube run by the nonprofit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV).This third egg began to pip during a snowstorm. However, the snow around the nest is also an insulating material, according to FOBBV. It limits heat exchange, stabilizes temperature, and muffles sound. Bald eagles have over 7,000 feathers and their core body temperature is roughly 105 degrees Fahrenheit, so they are built for the cold. For the chicks, hatching is a very strenuous process. After assuming a special hatching position from inside the egg, the chick will absorb the remaining yolk and fluids for energy. These nutrients will support the chick through the hatching process and within the first several hours after breaking out of its shell. The chick uses a special sharp protrusion at the top of its beak called an egg tooth to break through the various membranes and hard egg shell. This tooth will be visible after hatching, but eventually disappears. As oxygen levels inside the egg continue to decrease, the muscles at the back of the chicks neck start to contract. At this stage of development, this hatching muscle is the most well-developed muscle that the chick has. Once it makes that first pip, it can take its first gulp of air. After some rest and absorbing the rest of the egg fluids, the chick can start to vocalize and will make its first external pips in the shell. Its final push happens when the chick rotates inside the egg by pushing with its leg and using its egg tooth to scrape the eggshell.Only 50 percent of eagle eggs hatch, so this new brood has already beaten the odds. Jackie and Shadow first got together in 2018 and successfully raised chicks in 2019 and 2022, including one named Spirit. However, in 2023, their clutch was eaten by ravens. The pair laid three eggs in 2024, but those eggs failed to hatch. The third eaglet is hard to spot as it works on its neck strength. According to FOBBV, it may take some time for the hatchling to learn how to keeps its head up. Screenshot: FOBBV The post Jackie and Shadows third eaglet has landed appeared first on Popular Science.
