• UFC 313: Alex Pereira Breaks Silence, Reveals Future Plans After Loss

(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Zuffa LLCAlex Pereira didnt get beat up on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 313, but he did lose his light heavyweight title. Magomed Ankalaev won a less-than-thrilling fight to earn the UFC light heavyweight championship.Ankalaevs ability to shut down Pereiras offense was the key, though I did give the latter a slight edge on my scorecard (48-47). In any event, the official result was a unanimous decision win for Ankalaev.LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 08: Magomed Ankalaev of Russia reacts after a unanimous-decision victory ... [+] against Alex Pereira of Brazil in the UFC light heavyweight championship fight during the UFC 313 event at T-Mobile Arena on March 08, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Zuffa LLCPereira conducted an interview in the Octagon after the fight, but he expounded further in a video he posted on social media that ESPN MMA reposted. In short, Pereira says he will be back and that he is already eyeing adjustments he can make for the rematch.Pereiras video answers a few questions off the bat, eliminating a ton of speculation. First, hes not walking away or even seemingly looking to take a ton of time off before getting back into the Octagon.Secondly, a move to heavyweight to challenge either Jon Jones or Tom Aspinall for the UFC heavyweight title isnt whats next for the former two-division champion.Pereira seems to be firmly focused on a rematch with Ankalaev. Considering UFC President Dana White told the media that he would probably look to do an immediate rematch between Pereira and Ankalaev next, theres an excellent chance thats what we get sometime later this year.Ankalaev was brash during his post-fight meeting with the press. He accused Pereira of running for 20 minutes during their 25-minute fight. The two men stood in relatively close quarters for most of the fight, but there is no question Pereira showed respect for Ankalaevs power in the highly measured, high-stakes battle.Pereira shut down every takedown attempt, but his downfall was his inability to separate from Ankalaevs clinches against the cage in the third and fourth rounds. Pereira will have to work on disengaging during those sequences and perhaps being a bit more offensive in those situations. The fight reminded me a lot of Jose Aldos loss to Mario Bautista in October 2024 at UFC 307. Bautista didnt do much damage to Aldo, but the judges scored rounds for Bautista based on his control of the Brazilian legend against the cage.If Pereira wants a different result in the rematchand Ankalaev attempts a similar strategythe former will need to make the adjustments he mentioned. In case you missed it, here are the results from UFC 313.Main CardLight Heavyweight Championship Bout: Magomed Ankalaev def. • I saw the new Gemini and Project Astra, heres why its the future
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsAstra features: Gemini Live Video and screen sharingGemini Live can now read files, documents, and imagesNew features for Google Home: Gemini RoutinesThe future of AI is Google GeminiWere quickly entering the realm of AI that is useful, and key to this is Project Astra, Googles new universal AI agent that is helpful in everyday tasks. Oppo, Honor, Motorola and Tecno have all developed new ways for AI to help you in your daily life, but key to the next generation of artificial intelligence is Astras multimodal approach. The premise is simple: point your phone camera at something and have a live conversation with Google Gemini, where you can ask it questions and have it provide suggestions based on what it is seeing.Recommended VideosThe technology behind complex, and as you can imagine, the rollout of features is happening on a more piecemeal basis. The first two features are finally ready, and ahead of their launch later this month, I got to experience a preview of them alongside other Gemini announcements. What I saw is the future of AI, and Im super excited:Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThe big update to Gemini is the new Gemini Live, which gains new visual abilities powered by Project Astra. It makes logical sense that Astra features will help build the next generation of Google Live in more ways than one.RelatedIf youve been waiting for an AI that can help you understand the world around you, the new video-sharing feature will change your life. The demo involved asking questions related to a pottery business, and Gemini Live was about understanding colors, shapes, and context without needing multiple prompts. As youll see in the video above, its absolutely exhilarating, and the possibilities are endless. I have no idea if its possible, but could Gemini help you change a tire or fix a common engine problem if youve never had to do it before? What about asking it for fashion advice, looking for a medical diagnosis, or live translation of your surroundings while traveling?Of course, theres also the professional use case for this, and the new Gemini Live also supports screen sharing. This will allow you to share your screen, ask questions, and have Gemini guide you through it. I can see this being particularly impactful when performing complex tasks like filing paperwork, learning an advanced subject, or completing financial and tax documentation. These arent the only advancements in this new Agentic AI, as Google showed off other new Gemini-powered features for products in its ecosystem.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsAlongside the screen sharing feature on Gemini Live, Google showcased the ability for Gemini to read and understand a wide variety of images, files, and documents. This feature extends the core premise of Gemini Live to include a variety of different file types. This feature will likely be a huge boon for students, as Google demonstrated how a student may use it. Consider a textbook page on DNA. As shown in the video, Gemini Live can explain the topic in much more detail, search its knowledge base for additional relevant information, and even create a rhyme to help you remember the key facts. The addition of these features will elevate Gemini Live to the next level and will hopefully usher in the era of the next Google Glasses sooner rather than later. The demo took place with the Gemini app on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, so this should be available to all Gemini Advanced users.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThis demo was firmly designed to show how Gemini AI is evolving the smart home. In many ways, Gemini will be used to deliver the long-awaited autonomous smart home dream. The demo involves a relatable scenario of missing cookies. If you have children, a partner with a sweet tooth, or even a sneaky pet, the new Google Home and Gemini integration will catch them in the act.The demo showed how Gemini can be used to scroll through the footage from a Nest Cam, find the specific moment where the cookies disappeared, and analyze the scene. All from a simple prompt around who ate the missing cookie? With a single command, Gemini can also then set up a new routine that will automatically execute the next time the culprit is spotted on that camera. I cant wait to test out routines further, especially with more complex prompts and routines.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsIm impressed with Googles Gemini rollout, at least for its smartphone efforts. The widespread rollout across hundreds of millions of Android devices and the partnerships with different phone makers to develop new features are key drivers of the growth in users and features.Google is the consummate middleman here, helping to fuse different ideas and needs from phone makers as part of its feature roadmap. There will come a time when some features remain exclusive to a specific phone maker, but for now, its great that all Gemini users can test and experience these advancements.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsThat is, if youre paying for Gemini Advanced. As expected, the Video and Screen-sharing features in Gemini Live are limited to Gemini Advanced users, while its unclear whether all or some part of the other features will be available without a paid subscription. If you havent already purchased one, now might be a good time. If you need a new phone, you can also still get 1 year of the Google One AI plan which includes Gemini Advanced for free with a purchase of either the Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, or the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The latest updates to Gemini have me extremely excited about AI on smartphones in the future. The early Gemini features were less useful to me as they focused on more creative endeavors, whereas I am more interested in productivity hacks, but this has changed quite rapidly. For iPhone users, perhaps Gemini can help fill the hole following the delay to the new AI-powered Siri announced earlier this week.Editors Recommendations

  • 35 years after its release, Joe Versus the Volcano remains one of the most underrated romantic comedies
    www.digitaltrends.com
Amblin EntertainmentTable of ContentsTable of ContentsZany comedy from an acclaimed screenwriterSymbols at workMeg Ryan in three rolesBroad farce from a killer supporting castThe human touch that lastsThe connective tissue between the romantic comedies of the 1980s and 1990s, John Patrick Shanleys severely underrated daffy rom-com Joe Versus the Volcano celebrates its thirty-fifth anniversary on March 9th, and is as watchable and moving today as it was when it was first released, to tepid reviews, in 1990.Amblin EntertainmentShanley, an Off-Broadway playwright who made his breakthrough with the brilliant screenplay for Moonstruck, in 1987, is capable of works of extraordinary seriousness, like his 2005 Catholic sexual-abuse play Doubt: A Parable (also a 2008 film with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, written and directed by Shanley). But Joe, his directorial debut, is as off-the-wall as they come, with a comic language uniquely its own.Recommended VideosThe title character (Tom Hanks) is a hypochondriacal catalogue distributor for a medical supply factory, American Panascope (Home of the Rectal Probe), who is convinced by a quack doctor that hes terminally ill. Samuel Harvey Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges, father of Jeff), an eccentric billionaire, hires the hopeless Joe to jump into a volcano in the South Pacific to secure a lucrative minerals deal with the local tribe, reasoning that Joe has precious little time left, anyway. Joe takes the offer, and is escorted on his picaresque journey to the island of Waponi Woo by Graynamores two daughters (both played by Meg Ryan, in her first screen pairing with Hanks).RelatedAmblin EntertainmentA plot that borders on the irritatingly zany, at least in the abstract but were in the hands of Shanley, a filmmaker whose grasp of the reoccurring visual symbol is vastly underrated. The shape of crooked pathway that leads to the hell-mouth of American Panascope, a jarring scar of a polygon, is repeated over and over again in the film, first as Panascopes logo, then the road to the mouth of the volcano, then as a lightning bolt. As Hankss Joe stumbles into his miserable factory job at Panascope, we see his hands raised in the air, supplicating, desolate; then, later, adrift at sea, raised again in the same fashion, but celebratory, in a paean to the glory of existence: Dear God, whose name I do not know: Thank you for my life. I forgot How big. Thank you. Thank you for my life. (Hanks, at this time exclusively a comic performer, delivers a triumphant turn as an avatar of the downtrodden who learns to default to joy in the face of hopelessness.)Shanleys message seems to be that we should look at the world for patterns and symbols the same way we look at a movie, the better to understand life as an interconnected story in which we are all vital characters; his dialogue exhorts us to awake, to live in a state of constant amazement.Amblin EntertainmentRyan, who would go on to star alongside Hanks in Norah Ephrons 90s rom-coms Sleepless in Seattle (1992) and Youve Got Mail(1998), plays three roles DeDe, one of Joes co-workers at Panascope, and Graynamores two wayward daughters, Angelica and Patricia. Ryans work here is far and away the best of her career. In a succession of ridiculous wigs (The first time I saw you, one of her characters drawls, I felt like Id met you before), she gives three indelible performances in one. Joe goes for DeDe out of lust, comes to sympathize with Angelica, and finally falls almost instantly head over heels in love with Patricia, in a move that comments ironically on the movie tropes that justify such contrivances. (Ive fallen in love with you, she tells Joe; I dont know how it happened! And Ive never even slept with you or anything.)The brilliance of the triple role is that Joe falls in love simultaneously with one woman and with three, subdividing the traditional Shakespearean marriage plot into rising action (DeDe), building intimacy (Angelica), and climax (Patricia), all as fluidly as could be hoped. Again with the repeated images Hankss hand grasps Ryans in the same desperate, human motion in two of the three storylines, driving home the fact that despite the wigs, the audience is meant to fully understand that these three idiosyncratic characters are facets of a single woman.Amblin EntertainmentWhat Shanley allows his rom-com scripts to do that Ephron, divinely talented as she was, never broached was to venture into the broad, the melodramatic, and the cartoonish. (No wonder Nic Cage, in Moonstruck, fits in so well in his world: I lost my hand! I lost my bride!) Thus we get outrageous performances not only from the rubber-faced Bridges but from Abe Vigoda, Amanda Plummer, Nathan Lane, and Carol Kane, all character actors perfectly suited to Shanleys brand of silly, as well as a gorgeous and self-contained little turn from Ossie Davis as Marshall, a limo driver hired by Graynamore for Joes use who briefly teaches him to appreciate the finer things in life.Amblin EntertainmentShanley, like Joe, worked for a medical equipment factory in his younger years; like Joe, he was unlucky in love, divorcing young before meeting his second wife, to whom hes still married today. Perhaps that accounts for the fact that despite its more fanciful touches, there is something soulful and tangible about Joe Versus the Volcano that stays with you. Its reception in 1990 was brutal (Vincent Canby, in the New York Times, compared it to Howard the Duck), and after its released Shanley was unable to secure another directing job for 18 years (until Doubt, which was nominated for five Academy Awards). But audiences have come to understand Joe and to love in the 35 years since its release, and its easy to see why. In every frame of this movie, which is very nearly perfect, there is something to adore, something to remember forever, something to remind you of the essential goodness of the irreducible human spirit.Joe Versus the Volcanois streaming on Tubi.Editors Recommendations

I sat down with him this week to learn more about his latest exclusive and what it all means for Meta's future.Q: What's the reaction been to your coverage of Meta's "block" lists?A: We've had a wave of outreach since publishing. More former employees, both from Meta and other tech companies, have come forward to share similar experiences of being blocked from rehire. Their initial accounts suggest that this practice may be more widespread than initially thought. The story really took off when Laszlo Bock, Google's first HR head, shared it on LinkedIn. That sparked a robust debate.Q: What's the most important thing you learned from your reporting?A: I was struck by the remarkable lack of transparency in corporate hiring practices. While we have laws designed to prevent discrimination and retaliation, those protections only extend so far. There's a vast gray area where companies have near-complete discretion.I was particularly surprised by how much influence middle managers seem to have in this process. In some cases, a simple form or classification from a single manager can profoundly impact someone's future employment prospects.Q: Meta has undergone a pretty big transformation in the past few months. How does the story fit into what's next for the company?A: This story captures a key tension in Meta's evolution. • Is your grocery store out of eggs? Try these alternatives instead.
    www.vox.com
A global economic meltdown seems to be the only event that can cause people to cut back on meat. In the years that followed the 2007 Great Recession, the average Americans annual meat consumption fell by almost 9 percent. Milk purchases fell too. But through it all, egg consumption remained relatively stable and kept climbing, reaching around 280 eggs per person on average in 2022.That number could fall this year, not because people have soured on eggs, but because there arent enough to meet demand. Just in the last two months, 27 million egg-laying hens 9 percent of the nations egg-laying hen flock have been (brutally) killed to slow the spread of H5N1, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu.Shortages have doubled the cost of eggs, and inspired at least two egg heists. Despite grand promises from Donald Trumps presidential campaign to bring down the price of eggs, his own agriculture department now says their cost will continue to surge this year. This has some shoppers maybe you turning to egg alternatives. While most grocery stores now offer a wide variety of plant-based milk and meat products, there are fewer egg alternatives on the market. But theres still plenty you can do with the plant-based egg alternatives likely available at your local grocery store, and even with more traditional kitchen ingredients, when you have fewer eggs than usual, or none. 1. Just EggJust Egg, a plant-based liquid egg launched by San Francisco-based startup Eat Just in 2018, is made from an ingredient thats foreign to most Americans mung beans but it scrambles and functions like the real thing. The taste may not fool you, as its not quite as eggy (as in, stinky) and is less fatty than chicken eggs. But eggs usually arent eaten alone cooking Just Egg with olive oil, garlic, onion, tomato, and a vegetable or two of your choice makes for a tasty breakfast that comes close to an egg scramble. And it has a similar amount of protein as liquid eggs from chickens per serving.A Just Egg omelette. Courtesy of Eat JustIve also had delicious quiches and frittatas made with Just Egg, and it can even be used to replace eggs in baking (more on this later). The company also sells pre-cooked frozen egg patties for breakfast sandwiches, and breakfast burritos. However, Just Egg costs around $7.50 for a 16-ounce bottle, which is much more than liquid chicken eggs in part because, as Ive written about, animal agriculture has benefited and continues to benefit from decades of government support that helps keep prices low. Just Egg is by far the most popular plant-based egg: Eat Justs CEO, Josh Tetrick, told me that in the first two months of 2025, sales grew five times faster than in the same period last year. Its available in nearly 50,000 grocery stores and restaurants in North America use the companys store locator here to check availability near you. 2. Simply EgglessAt first glance, Simply Eggless appears practically identical to Just Egg, in that its a plant-based product that comes in both liquid and patty form and is made with a bean (lupin beans instead of Just Eggs mung beans). But Im sad to report that thats where their similarities end. I was excited to find the product at Trader Joes last year, but I was quickly disappointed when I cooked with it. For one, it doesnt scramble as well as Just Egg or regular eggs it just gets clumpy. Second, it tastes bad. As one BuzzFeed writer put it, These were, unfortunately, nasty. Theres no way to beat around the bush here. I actually spit them out.I didnt go as far to spit it out I soldiered on and finished my meal but I havent bought it again. 3. AcreMades egg substitute powderAcreMade, a company partially owned by livestock giant Cargill, makes a plant-based egg product made from pea protein that isokay. It comes in powder form, which when mixed with water can be scrambled. It has a good texture and is functionally similar to Just Egg, but doesnt taste quite as good. Its only available online and costs $15 for a 5.6-ounce bag, which contains 24 servings equivalent to 24 eggs and is also available for purchase on its website. The company also has a similar product to replace eggs in baking. 4. Yo EggYo Egg is a newer company that has recently expanded the number of grocery stores and restaurants that sell its products, which include a plant-based poached egg, a patty, and a hard-boiled egg substitute. I recently tried the poached product made with soy and chickpea protein at a restaurant and liked it. The flavor was good, but I was even more impressed with the companys technical ability to create an egg white pouch filled with a thick, yolky liquid. Find their products at a grocery store or restaurant near you.5. WunderEggs I never liked hard-boiled or deviled eggs, so WunderEggs launched in 2023 by Texas-based startup Crafty Counter arent for me, but I have friends who like them. WunderEggss main ingredients are simple water, almonds, coconut milk, and cashews and they look remarkably similar to eggs. Last year, the company won an innovation award from grocery giant Albertsons, and its now available in 1,600 of its stores (Albertsons, Safeway, Shaws, and Vons), as well as all Whole Foods locations. A tray of six costs around $8 and contains 8 grams of protein.6. TofuTofu is the perfect food: its cheap, high in protein, iron, and calcium, available just about everywhere, and can be used in a variety of dishes and cuisines, including as a substitute for an egg scramble. On its own, it doesnt taste like eggs, but medium-firm tofu, when mashed and sauteed, can have a similar texture. Like chicken meat, tofu doesnt have an inherently strong flavor and can absorb whatever spices and sauces you throw at it.Why you should consider making tofu a dietary stapleTofu, made from soybeans, isnt as glamorous as all the new plant-based meat startups, but it should be. It was invented in China around 2,000 years ago and remains a dietary staple around the world for good reason. At $2-3 per pound, its cheaper than meat except, sometimes, chicken and is widely available in grocery stores and most Asian restaurants. Its low in saturated fat and high in protein, calcium, and iron, and you can get it in soft (silken), medium-firm, firm, or extra-firm varieties. Its versatile in the kitchen, taking well to frying, grilling, baking, or even in desserts. And as a bonus, its incredibly environmentally friendly, using less land and water, and emitting far fewer greenhouse gas emissions, than animal-based protein. If youre skeptical, try first ordering a tofu dish at an Asian restaurant to experience how truly delicious it can be.Tofu scramble a classic plant-based staple is typically made with oil, garlic, onions, vegetables, and (plant-based) cheese. Its filling, affordable, healthy, and if made well, tasty in its own right even if it doesnt directly replicate the flavor of eggs. A pinch of kala namak, or black salt, will give it an eggy taste and smell. Here are a few popular, fool-proof recipes to get started:The best tofu scramble (Nora Cooks)Seriously the best tofu scramble (Rainbow Plant Life)Scrambled tofu revisited (Isa Chandra Moskowitz)7. Hodo All-Day Egg ScrambleA decent tofu scramble should take you 30 minutes or less to make, but if you want it even faster, try the all-day egg scramble from tofu maker Hodo. Its a spiced and mashed block of tofu rich with flavor, made with onion powder, garlic, cumin, turmeric, smoked paprika, and more. Its a bit salty, but cooking it with a few vegetables and cheese can cut some of that. 8. Baking without eggsIm more of a baker than a cook, and Ive been vegan for almost 20 years, so Ive mastered the art of baking without eggs, and I can tell you its quite simple because a lot of baked good staples dont need eggs in the first place. I cant tell you how many times a non-vegan bit into something that I or a friend made, had no idea it didnt have eggs (or dairy), and were none the wiser. You can use products like Just Egg, AcreMades egg replacer, or this one from Bobs Red Mill, to replace eggs in baking. But to save money, you can simply use, depending on what youre making, bananas, ground flax seeds with water, apple sauce, silken tofu, or even the water from a can of chickpeas (called aquafaba). Those ingredients may strike you as odd egg replacers, but eggs dont add too much to the flavor of a baked good. Rather, theyre more of a functional ingredient, working to bind other ingredients together, improve texture, and give certain desserts some fluff. Depending on the recipe, these other ingredients can do the trick. This guide from popular vegan recipe developer Nisha Vora covers how to use these ingredients as egg replacers and which are best for which baked goods. To be safe, I recommend using recipes that are already egg-free so you know its been tested as such, rather than trying to reformulate a classic recipe, especially when youre just getting started. Aside from what Ive mentioned here, there are a few other plant-based egg products that either arent easy to find at grocery stores or arent available at all in the US: Beleaf plant-based egg, Crackd, Neggst, and Zero Egg. (Ive had the Beleaf egg and enjoyed it but havent seen it in stores.) Why arent there more plant-based egg options? If the US were facing shortages of chicken, beef, or cows milk, consumers would have a wide array of alternative choices. But for some reason, despite the enduring popularity of the egg, the plant-based food sector has put little effort into making tasty and affordable animal-free options. Hens in cages at a commercial egg farm. iStock / Getty Images PlusThats a shame, because egg farming is particularly cruel to animals. Most egg-laying hens are packed into tiny cages, unable to even flap their wings, where they languish for one-and-a-half to two years before theyre slaughtered for pet food. Cage-free farming is an improvement, but still much more inhumane than you might think.I asked Tetrick of Eat Just why theres such a lack of competition (Just Egg, he said, makes up 99 percent of the plant-based egg market). He told me its a highly technical challenge compared to making, say, a plant-based burger, and its required the company to raise a lot of capital, and take on a lot of risk. We almost didnt accomplish it, he added. Im glad they did, because it means we have at least one great plant-based egg product thats also widely available. But for the sake of the hens, and food security threats like the bird flu, I hope they get a lot more competitors.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • Pokmon on Nintendo Switch 2 is already off to a bad start Readers Feature
    metro.co.uk
Pokmon Legends: Z-A is not the sequel to Scarlet and Violet (The Pokmon Company)A reader worries that Pokmon Legends: Z-A will have the same technical flaws as its predecessors and that Nintendo is not properly preparing Pokmon for the Switch 2.Everyones trying to guess what games will be shown at the Nintendo Direct in April, for the Nintendo Switch 2, but it doesnt seem very likely that therell be a Gen X Pokmon game (i.e. the sequel to Scarlet/Violet). Its about time for it but developer Game Freak already have Pokmon Legends: Z-A out this year, which isnt a Switch 2 game, so youd assume they havent got time.Stupidly, they did release Pokmon Legends: Arceus and Pokmon Scarlet/Violet in the same year but I really hope they learned from that one. They both sold OK but they were an even bigger technical disaster than usual for Game Freak.Pokmon is one of the biggest brands in the world, but the games are consistently the worst looking first party games on the Switch, and by a wide margin. Not just ugly and low tech but filled with bugs and low production levels, with no voice acting and just a general air of low effort laziness. Its not laziness, I know that; its because the developers are being worked to death with unreasonable schedules and not enough resources. But as a result, all the games come across as being unambitious and low budget, like an indie clone of Pokmon rather than what youd expect of the series itself.I am not the first fan to say that Game Freak should be given more money, more people, and more time but I see no evidence that they have been. After the disaster of Scarlet and Violet they shouldve committed to a longer development time for Gen X and concentrated on that and only that. But what did they do? They immediately started working on another spin-off. They will have had less than three years to make Z-A (maybe much less, depending on how long they were still making the DLC for Scarlet and Violet) and yet we know a high quality modern video game now takes at least five years, especially if the Switch 2 is more powerful. Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom took that long and it reused the same map and gameplay from the previous game!We also know Game Freak dont have enough staff to make two big games at once, so either its going to be another five years till Gen X or theyre going to rush it out in three or less and its going to be another disaster. Given the last two games, what would you bet on it being? They should never have started work on Pokmon Legends: Z-A. If they got someone else to make it then fine, its still unnecessary but at least it wouldnt be affecting work on Gen X, but that doesnt seem to be the case.Or, of course, they could get someone else to make the next mainline game, which I would be totally fine with. At this point it would be good to see a different take on things, but I think its pretty obvious thats not going to be the case either.Zelda, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing so many Nintendo franchises got revamps on the Switch that were amongst the best the various games had ever been. Except Pokmon, which was the worst its ever been.More TrendingThe Switch 2 isnt out yet we have barely even seen the first game and already Pokmon seems to be on the wrong course with it. The franchise needs its biggest shake-up ever, in terms of video games, and yet Pokmon Legends: Z-A implies its just the same disappointing business as usual.By reader Babooshka Pokmon Legends: Z-A wont have a separate Switch 2 version (The Pokmon Company)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. • Scientists Kept Peoples Eyes Open While They Slept, Revealing Surprising Brain Activity
    gizmodo.com
By Margherita Bassi Published March 9, 2025 | Comments (0) | A study participant with the device used to record pupil movements during sleep. Neural Control of Movement Lab / ETH Zurich Though sleep is a time to power down and replenish our energy, our brains remain surprisingly active when were at rest. In fact, more goes on behind our closed eyelids than we previously thought, according to a team of researchers that recently analyzed eye movements during slumber. In a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications, researchers in Switzerland analyzed the pupils of sleeping participants. The study reveals that our pupils constantly change size while were unconscious, indicating different levels of brain activationthe brains response to stimuli. With further research, doctors might one day use pupil activity to diagnose conditions such as sleep disorders. Pupil dynamics reflect the state of arousal, or the level of brain activation in regions that are responsible for sleep-wake regulation, said Caroline Lustenberger, a neuroscientist at ETH Zrich and co-author of the study, in a university statement. These observations contradict the previous assumption that, essentially, the level of arousal during sleep is low. The locus coeruleusa part of the brain that regulates activation levelsis located in the brainstem and is notoriously difficult to study while individuals are asleep, according to the researchers. Since the pupil size is known to reflect brain activity, Lustenberger and her colleagues assumed they could also be used to track brain activation during sleep. The team claims to be the first to observe eye movements during sleep for several hours at a timeand I know what youre thinking: how? The featured image in this article is not a stock photoit shows how they actually did it. The researchers simply taped one eye of each participant open, moistened it with eye ointment, and then sealed it behind a transparent bandage. Our main concern was that the test subjects would be unable to sleep with their eyes open. But in a dark room, most people forget that their eyes are still open and they are able to sleep, explained Manuel Carro Domnguez, a biomedical engineer at ETH Zrich and lead author of the study, who invented the technique. Overall, the participants pupil movement demonstrated that activation levels are constantly changing during sleep. According to the researchers, the finding confirms a biological feature in humans that previous studies had documented in rodents. The team also noted a link between pupil dynamics during sleep and specific brain activity patterns, including brain waves involved with sleep stability and memory consolidation. Furthermore, they discovered that the intensity of the brains reaction to sound depends on the level of its activation, as indicated by the participants pupils. However, the study did not prove whether the locus coeruleus directly influences pupil dynamics. We are simply observing pupil changes that are related to the level of brain activation and heart activity, Lustenberger explained. The team aims to investigate this potential dynamic, as well as how activation levels influence sleep, in a follow-up study. If they do find a strong causal relationship, pupil movement might one day be used to detect disorders such as insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder, or even a comatose patients recovery. We havent yet figured out if eyes are windows to the soulbut as the teams research shows, theyre certainly windows to the brain!Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Margherita Bassi Published March 4, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published February 1, 2025 Paul Brandt-Rauf, The Conversation Published January 30, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published January 21, 2025 By Ed Cara Published December 1, 2024 By Ed Cara Published November 21, 2024
