• Elon Musk says DOGE involvement is making it harder to run his businesses
    techcrunch.com
In an interview with Foxs Larry Kudlow on Monday, billionaire Elon Musk admitted that his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Donald Trumps initiative to reduce federal spending, is making it tougher to run his many businesses: X, Tesla, xAI, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Starlink. How are you running your other businesses? Kudlow asked at one point. With great difficulty, Musk replied. Frankly, I cant believe Im here doing this.Musk and DOGE, which has around 100 staffers a number that Musk expects to climb to 200 have been criticized for overpromising and underdelivering on spending cuts across U.S government agencies. Government contracting experts say that DOGEs online record of reductions contains inaccurate information and inflates claims of savings by including misleading math about contract cancellations.DOGE has also put the U.S.s data and computing infrastructure at risk through its work, according to cybersecurity analysts. DOGE staffers, some of whom have little experience working with government systems, have reportedly accessed agency data through insecure means and copied that data onto unprotected servers. While Musk complains that his work advising DOGE has stretched him thin, the billionaire has been accused of using the initiative to weaken regulations that oversee his business ventures. DOGE has gutted the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was poised to expand oversight of peer-to-peer payment systems including Xs upcoming virtual wallet product. It has reduced staff at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which had opened probes into the dangers posed by Teslas assisted driving technologies. Elsewhere, DOGE has fired probationary employees at the Federal Aviation Administration, which had proposed penalties for safety violations at SpaceX. And DOGE has pushed for significant staff cuts at the Securities and Exchange Commission, with which Musk has a long-running feud. When asked by Kudlow if he would extend his involvement in DOGE by another year, Musk said, Yeah. Were just getting things done, as opposed to writing a report, Musk added. Like, reports dont mean anything. Youve got to actually take action.

  • Eric Schmidt joins Relativity Space as CEO
    techcrunch.com
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is taking over as the CEO of Relativity Space, a 9-year-old rocket startup, a company spokesperson confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch. This is Schmidts first CEO job since he left Google nearly 15 years ago.On Monday, Schmidt told employees of Relativity Space that he made a significant investment and had taken a controlling stake in the company, the New York Times first reported. Schmidt is succeeding the startups co-founder, Tim Ellis, as chief executive. In a post on X, Ellis noted he will continue to support Relativity Space as director on the companys board.Schmidt is joining Relativity Space right as the company gears up for the 2026 launch of Terran R, a larger rocket than what the startup has launched before, that would compete with SpaceXs Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. In anticipation of Terran Rs first launch, Relativity Space has struck nearly $3 billion in launch contracts with customers, the Times reported.Schmidt was the CEO of Google for roughly 10 years. He was brought on to lead the rapidly growing search company in 2001, as Googles board pressured its young founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, to allow an experienced business leader to take the reins. Now, Schmidt will become CEO of Relativity Space at a critical moment in the companys history. He may offer the rocket startup both capital and experience to help guide it through the launch of Terran R. Additionally, Schmidt is quite well-connected in Washington, D.C., which could potentially assist Relativity Space in working with federal officials on future launches and government contracts.Relativity Space is known for producing its rockets with unusual techniques, including the use of 3D printers, automated robots, and artificial intelligence. The company previously announced a plan to launch the first private space mission to Mars by 2024. However, certain challenges have delayed those audacious milestones. In 2023, Relativity Space successfully launched its Terran 1 rocket, demonstrating that its 3D-printed technology could function effectively. However, Terran 1 failed to reach orbit. A month later, the startup announced that it would discontinue Terran 1 to focus entirely on developing the Terran R.The Long Beach-based rocket company reportedly faced cash shortages in 2024 and struggled to raise additional funding, Bloomberg previously reported. Previous investors in Relativity Space include Mark Cuban, BlackRock, and Fidelity. While running a rocket company is quite different from managing a search engine company, Schmidt has proven to be a valuable operator who can effectively grow startups in the past. With fierce competition in the space industry from companies such as SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and Blue Origin it seems Relativity Space could benefit from someone like Schmidt at the helm.Topics

Photo via: MalletExpansion of 3D Printed Footwear Technology3D printed footwear manufacturing is unlocking new possibilities for customization, sustainability, and performance. Last month, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Nike a patent for a new 3D printing process for footwear. In this method, Nike 3D prints digital designs directly onto fabric to create the shoes upper, then prints the sole directly onto it, eliminating the need for traditional two-part shoe construction.Nikes technique allows for advanced material customization, enabling designers to improve strength, rigidity, support, flexibility, and abrasion resistance. By removing adhesives, stitching, and extra material layers, this approach could lead to lighter footwear designs. Furthermore, the new patent (US-12226973-B2) could help reduce material waste, making custom products more sustainable.Elsewhere, Flexora, a 3D printed footwear project launched in 2024, announced the merging of high-resolution 3D printing technology with algorithmic design to create flexible, performance-oriented shoes. Developed by Global Architecture Studio SASI under the direction of Naomi Kaempfer, Creative Director at 3D printer manufacturer Stratasys, the project allows each pair to be customized to the unique shape of the foot and specific performance needs. SASI Studio explained that this approach not only provides a personalized experience but also offers a sustainable and innovative footwear solution.Who won the 2024 3D Printing Industry Awards?Subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter to keep up with the latest 3D printing news. You can also follow us on LinkedIn, and subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry Youtube channel to access more exclusive content..Featured image showsMallet London x Zellerfeld Nebula Shoes. • Vibe Coding: The AI Revolution Thats Making VCs Bet Big On Human Intuition
    www.forbes.com
How AI-Generated Code Is Creating A New Class Of Founders And Changing The Startup Game ForeverA photo taken on March 31, 2023 in Manta, near Turin, shows a computer screen with the home page of ... [+] the artificial intelligence OpenAI web site, displaying its chatGPT robot. Italy's privacy watchdog said on March it had blocked the controversial robot ChatGPT, saying the artificial intelligence app did not respect user data and could not verify users' age. (Photo by Marco BERTORELLO / AFP) (Photo by MARCO BERTORELLO/AFP via Getty Images)AFP via Getty ImagesIn Silicon Valley's relentless pursuit of the next big thing, a radical shift is upending traditional software development. Venture capitalists are now obsessed with "Vibe Coding" .The $100 Million "Vibe" That's Changing EverythingWhen Andrej Karpathy recently suggested on X that developers should "fully Give In To The Vibes" and "forget that the code even exists," few anticipated how quickly this would transform from provocative thought experiment to startup reality. Today, Y Combinator partners Garry Tan, Jared Friedman, and Diana Hu report a stunning revelation: one-quarter of current YC founders estimate over 95% of their code is now AI-generated."This isn't a fad, this isn't going away," insists one YC partner. "This is actually the dominant way to code, and if you're not doing it, you might just be left behind."Why Top VCs Are Betting On Vibes Over Engineering DegreesThe shift is fundamentally rewriting the startup playbook. In this new paradigm:Product intuition trumps coding credentials: "I'm no longer an engineer, I'm a product person," confessed one founder from Train Loop who has embraced the vibe revolution.Emotional detachment from code becomes an asset: "I am far less attached to my code now...since I can code three times as fast its easy for me to scrap and rewrite if I need to," explains the founder from Copycat.Speed is weaponized: What started as a "10x speedup" six months ago has accelerated to "100x" today, creating an exponential advantage for early adopters. The democratization of development: The barrier between "technical" and "non-technical" founders is crumbling, opening startup opportunities to visionaries regardless of coding background. The New Startup Talent War: Product Sense Is The New Technical InterviewForward-thinking VCs are already adapting their investment theses. Traditional engineering metrics like algorithm efficiency and coding speedonce the gold standard for technical evaluationare rapidly becoming obsolete."Maybe being a really productive coder... maybe thats outdated," notes a YC partner, signalling a seismic shift in how the next generation of billion-dollar companies will be built and funded. The founder of Outlit put it even more bluntly: "I think the role of software engineer will transition to product engineer. Human taste is now more important than ever as Gen AI tools make everyone a 10x engineer."The Dark Side Of The Vibe: Challenges RemainDespite the revolution, not everything about vibe coding is smooth sailing. Diana Hu, a YC partner, points out that current AI models struggle with debugging complex code issues, often requiring human intervention. This limitation means that while generating code has become exponentially faster, troubleshooting remains a distinctly human skill. The long-term implications for software maintainability and security also remain open questions. Companies embracing vibe coding must develop robust code review processes and invest in debugging tools to ensure quality and reliability. The Vibe Coding Playbook: Five Strategies For The AI-Native StartupFor founders looking to capitalize on this revolution:Double down on AI development tools: IDEs like Cursor and Windsurf aren't just productivity enhancersthey're becoming competitive necessities.Hire for taste, train for technique: The most valuable engineers now bring product intuition first, technical skills second.Embrace the "product engineer" hybrid: The artificial boundary between product and engineering teams is dissolving.Adopt parallel workflows: The ability to work on multiple features simultaneously using AI assistance creates multiplicative productivity gains.Master system architecture: As AI handles implementation details, system design becomes the true engineering differentiator. The Bottom LineThe vibe coding revolution represents perhaps the most significant shift in software development since the emergence of open-source. For investors, it creates new opportunities to back founders who might have been overlooked in the previous paradigm. For entrepreneurs, it dramatically lowers the cost of turning ideas into products. The exponential accelerationfrom 10x to 100x speedups in just monthssuggests we're only at the beginning of this transformation. Companies that invest in training their teams to thrive in this new environment while fostering cultures of experimentation and continuous learning will be best positioned to capitalize on vibe coding's potential. The question is no longer whether AI will transform codingit already has. The real question is whether you're positioned to ride this wave or be washed away by it.

  • NYT Strands Today: Hints And Answers For Tuesday, March 11
    www.forbes.com
StrandsNew York TimesLooking for Mondays Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:How To Play StrandsThe New York Times Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. Its in beta for now, which means itll only stick around if enough people play it every day.Theres a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and youll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.Youll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.Be warned: Youll need to be on your toes. Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones, The New York Times notes. Just as she varies the difficulty of Wordle puzzles within a week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy]What Is Todays Strands Hint? The NYT hint is the major one and then I will add a minor one on top of that. • Micron and Astera demo first PCIe 6.0 SSD, delivering 27GBps sequential read speeds
    www.techspot.com
Forward-looking: The AI world needs a lot of data, and that data needs to move much faster onto next-gen storage hardware. The PCI Special Interest Group is working on PCIe 6.0 and 7.0 standards to ease the pain with data throughput, though a few issues still need to be ironed out before general deployment. Last year, Micron teased its first PCIe 6 SSD, promising impressive bandwidth rates. More recently, the US memory manufacturer has partnered with switch maker Astera Labs to show the new drives in action. The two companies revealed what a proper PCIe 6 architecture can offer during a DesignCon 2025 showcase. It was the first public demonstration of end-to-end interoperability between a PCIe 6.x switch and a PCIe 6.x SSD.The DesignCon demo featured a Micron "Data Center" SSD connected to a Scorpio P-Series Fabric Switch developed by Astera. Together, the two new technologies surpassed a sequential read speed of 27GB/s. In 2024, Micron claimed its PCIe 6 drive would offer up to 26 GB/s sequential read speeds, so it exceeded that brag.Astera notes that the Scorpio P-Series Fabric Switch is the first designed specifically for PCIe 6 devices. The custom-built switch can work with 64 PCIe 6.x lanes and a 4-port architecture. It is just as fast in managing GPU, CPU, SSD, and NIC data flows. The PCIe 6 and PCIe 7 specifications aren't quite ready for prime time, as companies are still looking for ways to avoid speed throttling due to the excessive heat generated by the new bus tech.Achieving over 27 gigabits per second required a creative connection management approach. Astera linked its switch to an unspecified CPU, an Nvidia H100 GPU, and two Micron PCIe 6.x E3.S SSDs. The demo used Nvidia's Magnum IO GPUDirect Storage technology to establish a direct data path between the GPU and the SSDs.Astera Labs claims that PCIe 6.x is becoming required to build better AI and cloud infrastructures. The new standard can double the bandwidth of PCIe 5.0 devices, delivering up to 256 GB/s of bidirectional data rates per x16 lane. // Related StoriesThe low-latency, high-speed architecture should feed enough data to satiate AI-related workloads. The demo seemingly proves that PCIe 6.x is now ready for data center deployment. However, traditional PC products should not expect PCIe 6-compliant motherboards anytime soon.

  • Nvidia RTX 5050, 5060, and 5060 Ti specs leaked, slight core and TDP boosts expected
    www.techspot.com
Rumor mill: Following the disappointing launches of Nvidia's RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070 graphics cards, the Blackwell lineup's mainstream and entry-level products are expected to emerge soon. Unsurprisingly, they feature slightly more CUDA cores, draw more power, and upgrade to GDDR7 VRAM without increasing the VRAM pool. The exception is the 5050, which closely resembles the RTX 3050. Prominent leaker "Kopite7kimi" recently shared specifications for Nvidia's upcoming RTX 5050, 5060, and 5060 Ti graphics cards, which the company may announce this week. Like the other Blackwell cards, the three lower-end GPUs appear to be, at best, minor upgrades over their predecessors. The most glaring indication that this is the case is that the RTX 5060 and 5050 will still only have 8GB of VRAM. Come on, Nvidia. It's 2025. The 5060 Ti will have a 16GB option, confirming that the flagship 5090 is the only Blackwell GPU to feature more VRAM than its predecessor.Nvidia may promote its new mainstream products as budget-oriented options for multi-frame generation on 460Hz and 500Hz 1080p monitors. However, even at mainstream price levels, some users might find three consecutive generations of 8GB graphics cards hard to swallow, especially considering that competing options, like Intel's Arc B580, include 12GB.The RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti each feature a few hundred more CUDA cores than their 40 series equivalents. The 5060 upgrades from 3072 to 3850 cores, while the 5060 Ti receives an increase from 4352 to 4608. Of course, this factor makes them more energy-hungry, with TDPs rising from 115W and 165W to 150W and 180W, respectively.Meanwhile, the RTX 5050 looks identical to the 3050, which launched in 2022. It still has 2560 CUDA cores, a 130W power draw, and 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, while Nvidia upgraded all the other Blackwell GPUs to GDDR7. However, clock speeds for the three upcoming Blackwell cards remain unknown. // Related StoriesEach Blackwell graphics card released so far has provided smaller gains over its predecessor than the GPU ranked above it. The RTX 5070 performs almost identically and sometimes worse than the 4070 Super. This trend indicates improvements might be worse or nonexistent with mainstream and entry-level variants.Despite their unimpressive specs, history suggests that the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti might become the most popular Blackwell products, as 60 series GPUs usually dominate Steam hardware surveys. Still, the latest models might only be attractive to consumers upgrading from a card that is multiple generations old, and that's if AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 9060 and 9050 don't offer better value.According to prior reports, Nvidia might announce the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti this Thursday, March 13. However, availability isn't expected until next month.
