• OpenAI just launched a sequel to its most popular API
    www.fastcompany.com
More than three million developers are using OpenAIs APIs as shorthand code to infuse apps and websites with an engine of advanced AI. And today, the companys most popular API, called Chat Completions, is getting a significant sequel called Responses. Eight months in development, it will vastly expand upon and simplify the experience of plugging into OpenAI.For developers, Responses will mean using less code to stack more complex questions to the AI. A hundred lines of code will turn into just three, as the company is courting a wider set of developers who dont consider themselves LLM experts. For consumers, it will mean youll soon be interacting with AI thats faster, more fluid in using forms of media other than text, and more capable of taking more steps on your behalf.Completions were very much designed in a world where you could only put text into it, and you could only get text out of it. But now we have models that can do work across multiple mediums. We can put images in, we can get audio out of the model, and [users] can speak to the model in real time and have it speak to you back, says Steve Coffey, an engineer at OpenAI. [Completions] is just like the wrong tool for the jobso Responses was designed from the ground up.What is OpenAIs new Responses API update?APIs are basically the software gateways to use features from a service or platform inside your own. And to OpenAI,itsAPIs are as carefully designed as any producteven if wedonttend to consider APIs as designed objects. The iPhone has APIs for apps using its camera and accelerometers, for instance, while Stripes APIs make it possible for websites and apps to take paymentsand in each case, the ease of integrating these APIs has been vital to courting developers and growing a business.OpenAI created the modern API for AI in 2020 (and Chat Completions in 2023) so developers could plug into its AI platform. Its competitors have since copied OpenAIs approach to be something of an informal standard across the industry.Thousands of apps, ranging from Perplexity (an AI search engine) to Harvey (an AI for lawyers), currently integrate OpenAI APIs.Today, OpenAI offers a few different APIs, including one that generates images for Dall-E and another that exclusively works to summarize or write text from scratch. For this release, OpenAI is focusing on Responses, the evolution of its Chat Completion APIthe companys popular way that app developers can plug into the core conversational technology behind ChatGPT. The way the Chat Completions was designed, developers could only send one query in text at a time, and get a single answer in text back. Practically speaking, that meant complicated questions could take several steps, and each individual new question took time, introducing more latency. Now, a developer plugs strings of code into the Responses API, crossed with natural language queries that developers can use that are more or less the way you or I would talk to ChatGPT. (A long user manual helps developers understand what they can and cant do.)OpenAIs API will offer multi turn conversations that understand context and conversational floweven when you mix in multimedia like images and, soon to arrive, voice/sound. Responses can also juggle several processes at once, because with a single line of code, you can connect Tools hosted by OpenAI into this process. These tools will include a web search (so OpenAIs responses can be grounded in more real time data), a code interpreter to write and test code, and a file search to analyze and summarize files. The new API will also let developers connect to OperatorOpenAIs agentic tool that can analyze screens and actually take actions on the users behalfand comes with a new kit of software that helps developers juggle multiple AI agents at the same time.As the company explains, building APIs requires forecasting years ahead at the functions developers may want, and if you squint, its not hard to deconstruct OpenAIs own thesis on the future lurking in the feature set. The API has vastly expanded upon whats possible to do when you plug into OpenAI as a developerembracing fuzzy inputs of multimedia, integrating information so responses are current, and perhaps most notable of all, acting on behalf of the user to save them time and effort.Im very excited for this year because of the agentic behavior that our models will unlock the model is taking multiple steps on its own volition and giving you an answer, says Atty Eleti, an engineer at OpenAI. On the far end, [it makes way for] AI engineers, AI designers, AI auditors, AI accountants. Little junior interns that you can instruct and operate and ask them to go up and do these things. And I think were on the cusp of that becoming a very tangible reality.Still, these long-term possibilities are grounded in immediate efficiencies. The API updates mean that a simple question, whats the weather in San Francisco, goes from taking a hundred lines of code to just three. Adding all of the aforementioned tools requires just one line of code. This means that coding AI apps should be faster for developers. And because many queries hit OpenAIs servers all at once, responses should come faster for end users.[Image: OpenAI]The challenge of bringing developers alongLike any tool, APIs have to be designed for ease of use. They are not just about coding capabilities, the OpenAI team argues, but about designing clarity and possibility. The education ladder of an API is something that has to be very consciously designed, because our target audience is not people who know how AI works or how LLMs work, says Eleti. And so we introduce them to AI in a sort of a ladder way, where you do a bit of work and you get some reward out of it. You do a bit more work, you understand some more concepts, and then over time, you can graduate to the more complex functionality.OpenAI gives this instructive feedback to developers through their own mistakes. Whenever it generates errors, OpenAI tries to explain what went wrong in plain language, so the developer can actually understand how to improve their technique. The OpenAI team believes that such feedback, coupled with autocomplete coding tools, should make Responses easy for developers to learn.I think that really good APIs sort of allow you to start off with the gas pedal in the steering wheel and graduate slowly to the airplane cockpit by exposing more and more functionality in the form of knobs, in the form of like settings and these other things that are hidden from you first, but exposed over time, says Coffey. The tricky part of updating an API, however, is not just making it self-explanatory. The API also needs to be backwards compatible because software thats already been built to connect to OpenAI cant suddenly go dark after an update. So Responses is backwards compatible with software built upon Chat Completions. Furthermore, the Completions API itself will continue working as it always has. OpenAI will continue to support it into the future, offering updates that put Completions as close to feature parity with Responses as it can. (But to use those nifty tools, youll need to graduate to Responses.)Over time, the OpenAI API team bets that most of its developers will land on Responses, given the extra capabilities and that it will be price-equivalent to run. Assuming that OpenAI has bet on the right future, AI software is about to become faster, more capable, and more proactive than anything weve seen to date.

  • Trump may be buying a Tesla from Musk, but TSLA stock is still flat after yesterdays massive sell-off
    www.fastcompany.com
Shares in Elon Musks Tesla, Inc. (Nasdaq: TSLA) have gained very slightly in early morning trading today after the stock crashed around 15% yesterday. The decline in TSLAs share price yesterday, which saw shares hit lows of around $215 before closing at just north of $222, was the electric vehicle makers worst single-day drop in nearly half a decade.Heres what you need to know about Tesla stock this morning. What is Teslas stock price? As of the time of this writing, TSLA shares are trading at about $224 apiece. Thats about a half-percent gain since markets opened. Shares had climbed over 5% before giving up much of those early gains. But any share price gain will likely be music to many Tesla investors ears. This is especially true after yesterdays more than 15% fall in Teslas stock price. It signals the bleeding may have stoppedat least temporarily. Why did Tesla shares crash yesterday? While Tesla was one of the biggest losers on the stock market yesterday, its important to note that very few major stocks performed well. In fact, all the major stock markets declined significantly yesterday, including the Nasdaq, S&P 500, and Dow Jones. The market crash followed President Trumps comments that he couldnt rule out the possibility of America entering a recessiona scenario economists have long feared after Trumps insistence on raising tariffs on goods from Americas largest trading partners. That said, TSLA shares were among the hardest hit yesterday. Theres no doubt that TSLA shares fell partly due to the broader market sell-off, but that sell-off likely also acted as an accelerant for investors who were already concerned about the companys declining share price in recent weeks.Since the beginning of the year, Tesla shares have plunged a staggering 45%, and last week, the company lost all the gains it had made since the Trump bumpthe colloquial term for the dramatic growth TSLA shares experienced following Donald Trumps victory in the U.S. presidential election. On November 4, TSLA shares closed at approximately $242. By mid-December, TSLA shares reached an all-time high of over $488. However, since Trump took office, Tesla shares have plummeted, dropping from a peak of around $433 the day after Trumps inauguration to as low as $215 just yesterday. In the run-up to yesterdays crash, investors have become increasingly concerned about falling Tesla sales in many key markets, including China and Europe. Teslas declining sales in Europe have come after Elon Musk spent the latter part of 2024 propping up a far-right party in Germany.Domestically, investors are worried that Musks involvement with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency is alienating Teslas core customer base: liberal progressives who previously flocked to Tesla EVs because of their concerns about climate change. However, Musks closeness to Trump and his role in the administrations cuts of tens of thousands of jobs from the federal workforce, coupled with his insistence on voicing his divisive political views, have turned many off the brand. In recent weeks, Tesla showrooms across the country have also become demonstration points for protestors seeking to voice their grievances against both Elon Musk and the Trump administration. All this means investors worry Teslas brand image may be being harmed beyond repair. Many fear the tarnishment of the brand will lead to decreased sales in the future. Why were Tesla shares up today? Its impossible to pinpoint one reason why Tesla shares were up briefly today. However, one of the most likely reasons is that, after yesterdays massive sell-off, some investors saw the stock as being on sale and bought shares while they were discounted. Its common to an extent for shares in a company to recover somewhat in the days following a major sell-off.Yet as of the time of this writing, TSLA shares have now given up those early modest gains. The only other news around Tesla in the past 24 hours is that President Trump has openly signaled his support for the company after yesterdays stock price fall. In a move that would be unusual for most presidents, Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social network yesterday that he is going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk. However, it is unlikely that the presidents open support of Musk and Teslaand the promise to buy one of its vehiclesis a significant mover behind the stocks price today.Where does Teslas share price go from here?Where TSLA shares go from here is anyones guess. In January, JP Morgan issued the stock a $135 price target. If accurate, Tesla shares could still fall nearly $100 per share. However, other analysts still maintain much higher price targets for the stock. According to data from Yahoo Finance, Wedbush has a $550 price target for TSLA shares, and Piper Sandler has a $500 target. However, the stock also has bears other than JP Morgan. Bernstein, for example, has maintained a $120 price target on Tesla shares since October.

  • Huawei Mate XT: Embracing the Tri-Fold Experience
    www.yankodesign.com
Since bringing home the Huawei Mate XT from MWC 2025, Ive been on a fascinating adventure with this tri-fold device. This isnt another ordinary smartphoneits a glimpse into what mobile technology becomes when designers think beyond conventional boundaries.Designer: HuaweiThe Physical ExperienceThe Mate XT draws the eye with its intricate design details when you pick it up. At 298 grams, it has a substantial presence in handa reminder that youre holding something different. For context, thats about 77% heavier than the iPhone 16 Pro (168g) and significantly weightier than the Google Pixel 9 Pro (187g). The folded thickness of 12.8mm also distinguishes it from the ultra-thin devices weve grown accustomed to, with most premium smartphones measuring between 7-9mm.Whats impressive is how quickly this initial impression gives way to appreciation. The red vegan leather back provides an excellent grip that makes handling the device feel secure despite its weight. The textured surface creates just the right amount of friction against my palm, preventing any sense of precariousness during use.The hinges deserve special mention. They move with a deliberate, smooth resistance that inspires confidence. Each transformation between configurations feels engineered rather than merely assembled. The hinges hold their position at any angle, allowing for customized viewing positions that adapt to different situations and environments.Within days, what initially registered as heavy has transformed into what I now perceive as substantiala subtle but important shift in perspective that reflects how quickly we adapt to new physical experiences.Three Screens, Three PossibilitiesThe magic of the Mate XT lies in how it transforms between three distinct experiences. In its folded state, the phone has a tall, narrow 6.4-inch screen that works wonderfully for quick interactions. This display size matches many popular smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy S23, creating a familiar experience for texting, calling, and checking notifications. This configuration remains perfect for on-the-go use when walking or standing. The middle configurationpartially unfolded to 7.9 incheshas become my go-to for many daily activities. This size sits between standard smartphones and small tablets like the iPad Mini (8.3 inches), striking a perfect balance for reading articles, browsing social media, and responding to emails. The text becomes more comfortable to read without the device becoming unwieldy. This book mode feels natural when relaxing on the couch or during my commute.Fully unfolded to 10.2 inches, the Mate XT transforms into something magical. This size rivals the standard iPad (10.9 inches) and Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 (11 inches), but with a key differencethe 16:9 aspect ratio creates a genuinely immersive tablet experience. Unlike the more square-ish aspect ratios of most tablets, this configuration is perfectly suited for media consumption. Netflix shows fill the screen beautifully without the letterboxing common on iPads. Web pages display their desktop layouts rather than their cramped mobile versions. Spreadsheets become actually usable rather than exercises in patience.Yes, there are creases where the screen foldsvisible particularly under direct light. But their visual presence fades remarkably quickly from conscious awareness. My focus naturally shifts to the content rather than the medium, with the creases becoming just another characteristic of the display rather than a distraction. The Best Device Is the One You Have With YouTheres a well-worn adage in photography: The best camera is the one you have with you. This simple truth acknowledges that technical superiority means nothing if a device is left at home when an opportunity arises. Ive come to believe this principle extends perfectly to computing devicesthe best tablet is the one you actually have when you need it.During a recent trip back from Barcelona, I noticed a passenger across from me struggling to watch a movie on his phone. As we talked, he shared his amazement at the Mate XTs transformative nature. He explained that he had left his tablet at home, realizing he didnt need to carry it for a long-haul trip. Meanwhile, I unfolded my Mate XT to its full 10.2-inch glory and enjoyed an immersive viewing experience on a device that had been in my pocket moments before. The value of the Mate XT isnt that its the best smartphone or tablet in isolationdedicated devices still hold advantages in their specialized categories. Its true value lies in being good enough at both roles while always being available. The tablet you left at home because it was too cumbersome to carry offers zero utility, while the folding device in your pocket transforms to meet the need at hand. This always available factor changes how I approach productivity and entertainment. I no longer plan device usage around anticipated needs (Should I bring my tablet today?) but instead respond to opportunities as they arise. A surprise 30-minute wait becomes a chance to review a document comfortably. A delayed flight becomes an opportunity to watch an episode of a show with proper screen real estate. This is 100% clear to me, especially when spending the day with my daughter at her tennis match, where having a flexible device makes all the difference. The Mate XT eliminates the opportunity cost of choosing which devices to carry. Its one of the best everyday carry devices, extending beyond the physical universe by adapting seamlessly to different needs. Like a multi-tool, it may not be as specialized as individual implements, but its remarkable versatility ensures its always present when needed. The Beginning of an Ongoing ExperienceUsing the Huawei Mate XT has changed how I think about mobile devices. Instead of switching between a phone and a tablet, Ive found myself relying on one device that adapts to whatever I need in the moment. The tri-fold design makes everything seamless, whether Im responding to messages, getting work done, or unwinding with a show.Once noticeable, its weight becomes part of the experience, reinforcing the sense that this is something differentsomething substantial. The creases fade into the background as the content takes center stage. The true value isnt found in any one configuration but in the seamless transition between them. Its about having the right tool in your pocket without compromise. The Mate XT doesnt demand that you choose between a phone and a tabletit simply adapts, ready for whatever the day brings. The post Huawei Mate XT: Embracing the Tri-Fold Experience first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Ocean-Friendly Plastic: A Breakthrough in Combating Microplastic Pollution
    www.yankodesign.com
Youve probably seen enough documentaries, videos, and read articles to know that microplastics is one of the biggest pollutants of our oceans and of the earth in general. They last for decades, sometimes even centuries before they fully decompose. Hence, eco-friendly advocates have been trying for years to get people to use less single use plastics but we still have not made significant progress in that area. Scientists have also been hard at work to create plastic materials that are better for mother earth so that eventually we can phase out the bad plastic. Designer: RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS), the University of Tokyo, and Eindhoven University of TechnologyResearchers at the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS), in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Eindhoven University of Technology, are developing a kind of recyclable plastic that will be able to fully dissolve when submerged in seawater over a certain period of time. They use supramolecular plastics or polymers by mixing sodium hexametasphosphate, which is normally used as a food additive, and guanidinium ion-based monomers. Because bacteria can break down these materials, they become dissolvable eventually. Using this kind of recyclable plastic means that the accumulation of harmful microplastics in the oceans and the food chain will be lessened. The plastic also degrades in soil within 10 days so it can also act as a fertilizer. But lest we think that this kind of plastic is not durable, it is reportedly as strong as conventional plastics since the cross-linked salt bridges from the monomers provide it with strength and flexibility. They can also be reshaped at temperatures above 120C so it adds to its versatility and the guanidinuum sulfates can be used to tailor the plastics hardness and tensile strength for specific applications. This kind of plastic is also safe for the environment and the users as well so it can be used in various food applications like water bottles, food container, etc. It can also be used for medical tools since the material is suitable for 3D printing. This innovative plastic, marks a significant leap forward in our fight against plastic pollution. By combining biodegradability with durability and recyclability, researchers have created a material that offers a genuine alternative to traditional plastics. While widespread adoption and further research are crucial, this breakthrough offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that a future with less plastic waste and healthier oceans is within reach. Its a testament to the power of scientific innovation to address pressing environmental challenges, and a reminder that sustainable solutions are possible when science and collaboration converge. The post Ocean-Friendly Plastic: A Breakthrough in Combating Microplastic Pollution first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • macOS 15.4 makes it harder to see how much storage Apple Intelligence uses
    www.macworld.com
MacworldIn macOS 15.3 and early versions, you can see easily how much storage space Apple Intelligence takes up on your Mac in the Storage settings. However, Apple seems to have changed this behavior with the second macOS 15.4 beta and hasnt changed it in the recently released beta 3.To see this info, go to System Settings > General > Storage > macOS and click the i icon. If youre not running the beta, you should see an info box like the one at the top of this article. If you are running the beta, you may see what MacRumors aaronp613 posted on X.X/aaronp613There is a way to make the info appear, though, and it requires disabling SIP, according to b3lla_dev. SIP stands for System Integrity Protection, and it is a security measure in macOS that prevents the execution of unauthorized code, according to Apple. To turn off SIP, you need to boot into Recovery Mode and we have instructions on how you can do that. Once there, you launch Terminal, type csrutil disable at the prompt, then press Return. You then need to enter a username and password that has Administrator rights, and then wait a bit while the task runs. When its done, restart the Mac and you can then see Apple Intelligences storage allocation.Apple doesnt recommend using your Mac with SIP off for an extended period of time because its a form of security thats no longer in place, making your Mac vulnerable. To turn Recovery Mode on, repeat the steps in Recovery Mode but instead enter csrutil enable in Terminal.Depending on how you feel about Apple Intelligence, theres a bit of irony in the idea that SIP hides its storage allocation. A few posts in response to aaronp613 are calling this behavior in the macOS 15.4 beta a bug, but it doesnt appear to be. You now have to resort to extraordinary steps to see the info.Apple Intelligence takes up about 5GB of space, which is a lot, even if you have a 1TB SSD. But turning Apple Intelligence off (System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri) doesnt fully remove all components from storage. When I turned it off in macOS 15.3.1, the Apple Intelligence storage allocation went from 5.21GB to 3.03GB.macOS 15.4 is expected to arrive in April.

  • Hey Apple! When youre in a hole, stop digging
    www.computerworld.com
Soon after the non-appearance of themost important Apple Intelligence feature, Apple now finds itself in danger of digging an even deeper hole by promising iOS 19 will be the most significant upgrade in years. The problem: it again runs the risk of promising too much and not delivering enough. Its a dangerous approach. If the worlds mostprolific sourceof spookily accurate speculation is correct, Apple plans one of the most dramatic upgrades to its operating systems yet. The report is short on detail, but it does reveal changes that appear to be focused on the user interface. Apple apparently wants to simplify the way users navigate and control their devices, among other things:The report also says to expect updates to icons, menus, apps, windows, system buttons and a new design across all systems that loosely reflects the UI of visionOS.And we are promised wider support for existingApple Intelligence features across apps.Is this really more dramatic than iOS 18? Around this time last year, Mark Gurman declaredthat iOS 18 would be the biggest software update yet. As we all know, Apple hasnt completed that rollout yet and already, it seems, plans another dramatic upgrade. Im a little skeptical, particularly as the claim follows iOS 18, which with its bundled AI really was a dramatic upgrade, albeit it a botched one.The problem is that at its core, Apple is a software company. It is the software that drives its story. Would the iPhone Apple introduced in 2007 have gotten anywhere without the software it ram? I dont think so.Apple is a software companyAt its best, Apple turns tech into something that is deeply useful, and with Apple Intelligence hopes to turn AI into something that supports you in your life, rather than dominating how you live. An applied, private, and personalized agentic AI system that helps you with your daily tasks is a really big deal. So how does Apple beat it?To some extent, the company has become a slave to its own change cycle. At some point, it pivoted toward software as the main driver to its product strategy. Sure, Apple makes hardware that generally works really well, but it is the software that makes the hardware invaluable. Apples decision to make big news with operating system upgrades each year isnt just a developer-focused benefit, its also the anvil upon which the success of its hardware releases is honed. The software story feeds the hardware story; annual free software updates usually improve the experience Apple customers have with the hardware they already own, which keeps them interested, loyal, and likely to invest in new Apple hardware next time they need to do so. The improvements usually get announced at WWDC in June, tested during the summer, and introduced in fall.Surprise, delight and hypeThe thing is, the software does matter. So, is Apple now under pressure to build up expectations for the software updates it plans to introduce this year? If so, I think it is ill-advised to make big promises now. Having already broken its stated release schedule for what is arguably the most interesting piece of Apple Intelligence, the company would be better advised to lower expectations in order to exceed them, rather than struggle to meet them. Surprise and delight is usually better than inflated hype.It is worth noting that the kind of contextually personalized intelligence Apple promised to put inside Apple Intelligence is not currently available anywhere else, because it is so hard to build. That means when (or if) Apple can introduce it, it will still be ahead of most. But it still has to maintain credibility and calling a few tweaked user interface elements the most dramatic upgrade ever doesnt do that.People lose faith one broken promise at a time. So, stop with the drama and promises, Apple, and focus on the art.You can follow me on social media! Join me onBlueSky, LinkedIn, andMastodon.
