• DIY AI-powered doorbell screens visitors so you wont even have to talk
    www.yankodesign.com
Weve all been in that situation where were about to do something very important when the doorbell suddenly rings repeatedly. We drop everything to rush to the door, only to find out it was nothing worth your time at all. These days, we have audio and video doorbells that let us see who rang the bell and even talk to them, but that still requires you to be near some device to talk, wasting effort and time.AI agents today have become quite the conversationalists, making it feel like youre talking to a real person (though perhaps one with a flat personality). Leveraging that technology, this DIY smart doorbell uses an AI agent to act as your own personal receptionist, asking visitors the hard questions about their identity and purpose before deciding to open the door or not, all without your manual intervention.Designer: Roni BandiniEver since Google demonstrated Duplex back in 2018 as it expertly made restaurant reservations over the phone, AI has evolved at an almost frightening rate and degree. While trained people will be able to distinguish AI-generated content, most people wont have that level of expertise to be able to tell if theyre talking to a human behind the chat or not. There are many ways to use and abuse such technologies, and RinGPT employs a conversational AI agent in a rather interesting and amusing way.The DIY project cobbles together a UNIHIKER board (think Raspberry Pi but with built-in sensors and a touch screen), an LED push button, a Bluetooth speaker, and a servo motor to build a smart doorbell which is basically just a home for this ChatGPT agent. Mechanically, its a pretty simple concept: a visitor pushes the button, triggering RinGPT to interview the person, asking them who they are.The AI part comes after this, analyzing the spoken response and judging whether the person is trustworthy or not. If yes, the motor is activated to open the door, otherwise the AI politely turns the visitor away. All of these happen without the homeowners manual intervention, though they will definitely be aware if someone rings the doorbell even when theyre not home. RinGPT informs them via the Telegram messaging platform of such events.Of course, the test scenario raises quite a few red flags, especially considering the AI actually opens the door to people it judged to be welcome. Were not yet at a point in time where we can consider even the smartest AI agents to be foolproof enough to be used for human security. Something as rough as RinGPT, which has very noticeable and unnatural pauses before it replies, is definitely not yet fit to be a receptionist, let alone a security guard that will let people in your personal safe space. The post DIY AI-powered doorbell screens visitors so you wont even have to talk first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • The iPhone 16e has an annoying Bluetooth issueand a fix is on the way
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApples iPhone 16e has only been out for a week and theres already a major issue that has early adopters looking for a fix. According to posts on the Apple Discussion Forum and Reddit with more than 60 comments and 100 Me too reactions, Apples new phone has a nagging audio issue: If youre playing audio through any Bluetooth headphones, the sound stutters several times per song for a second or two before continuing to play.Apple is now aware of the problem, reports a user on the Apple Discussion Forums, who installed a profile on his affected iPhone and documented the issue for Apples engineering team. While there are reports that Apple is working on an in-house Bluetooth/Wi-Fi chip, the iPhone 16e still uses the part supplied by Broadcom.iOS 18.3.2 doesnt helpApple this week released an update to iOS 18.3.2, but affected users who installed the update were confronted with the same problems. Some users also report that their local Apple support replaced the devices with a new phone, but the issue persisted, which indicates that its a software issue. Some users have reported the issue on other iPhone models, but it doesnt appear to be as widespread as the iPhone 16e.Those affected seem to have identified a common factor: Apparently, the sound playback in the Bluetooth headphones starts to stutter when the iPhone 16e is also connected to another device via Bluetooth. In several cases, it was a fitness tracker, for another user, it was an Oura ring.Apparently, the bug will be fixed in the upcoming iOS 18.4, several contributors in the forums report no connection problems with the beta version of iOS 18.4.

  • I gave Apple Arcade a chance. Heres why you should too
    www.macworld.com
MacworldApple Arcade is one of Apples more opaque services. The company doesnt disclose any subscription figures and keeps other key data under wraps. Occasionally, specialist media manage to glean a few insights by interviewing a developer in a forthcoming mood, but most of the time were kept in the dark. Is it a success? Is it a failure? Thats hard to say. What we can say for sure is that Arcade has some really good games. Everything from indie classics such as Slay the Spire and Stardew Valley and current titles such as Vampire Survivors and Balatro to surprising (and surprisingly good!) franchise additions such as Sonic Dream Team and Cypher 007. On the other hand, theres some real rubbish on there too: the kind of junk that should have died with Farmville. Its a mixed bag, then. But Id like to explain why I think Apple Arcade is absolutely worth your time, even if you dont play a lot of games. In fact, people who dont play a lot of games might be the ones who need Arcade the most. The App Stores charts and categories can serve as a guide, but the selection is overwhelming.Karen Haslam / FoundryThe agony of choiceThe bored iPhone owner who randomly browses for games in the App Store is likely to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. And while the Games tab is quite well organized and offers numerous points of entryincluding What Were Playing, Must-Play Games, Hidden Gems, and the chartsthis only makes a difficult situation fractionally less difficult.Perhaps our iPhone owner might begin by tapping on the Top Paid Games chart. At the time of writing, Minecraft is in first place ($6.99), followed by Balatro ($9.99), and Bloons TD 6 ($2.99). Maybe youd like to try one of them? Youll have to pony up the cash since demo versions arent available. Youll just have to look at the screenshots and hope youll like it.If a game turns out to be a stinker, you can try asking for a refund. But it requires jumping through several hoops to file a claim and theres no guarantee that itll be accepted. You might decide that its not worth the effort for a few dollars. What about the free charts? That way you dont need to risk any money. Right now Block Blast sits at number one, Tidy Up: Perfect Games in the second slot, and Township at number three. But just because theyre popular doesnt mean theyre good. There are some decent games in the free segment, but the vast majority arent worth your time. Many are poorly designed, unoriginal, stuffed with ads, or a combination of all three, and the chances are that, sooner or later, you will be presented with an in-app purchase. It doesnt cost any money to give the games a try, but you pay in time and irritation instead. If youre overwhelmed by the agony of choice, you can rely on the recommendations of experts. (I would personally be delighted if you found what you were looking for in our overview of the best iPhone games.) But tastes differ and no editorial team in the world can thoroughly cover a library of a million games. If it werent for Apple Arcade, I would probably never have played Balatro.PlaystackConvenience, curation, and child protectionThis is where Apple Arcade comes in. The games on there are curated, so the number is far lower and the average quality far higher. Thats not to say that every game is a classic, and you still have to exercise a little common sense. But the odds are a lot better youll find something fun and engaging in Apple Arcade.Arcade also assuages any worries about wasting money on a game without being able to try it first, because, for $6.99/6.99 a month or $49.99 a year (or less if you subscribe to Apple One), you can try any of the 300 games completely free of obligation. Maybe youll come across some gems that you never would have played otherwise. If you dont like a game, you can delete it immediately and skip to the next one without wasting a penny. Youre paying a fixed fee regardless of how many games you try, and you never have to worry about the dreaded refund form.A final huge advantage of Apple Arcade compared to games on the normal App Store is that youre not exposed to ads or in-app purchases. This is good for privacy, as advertisers love to harvest data about your behavior. And for your wallet, you dont run the risk of spending several hundred dollars on gems or other nonsense. Arcade games are also free from annoying restrictions that prevent you from continuing to play, while additional content that you would otherwise have to buy separately is included. This last aspect shouldnt be underestimated, especially if you have kids. Apple Arcade games dont expose children to predatory practices such as gambling, loot boxes, and harmful advertising. Your child wont inadvertently spend a fortune on silly skins. And since Apple Arcade is covered by Apples Family Sharing scheme, you only have to pay once. There are exclusive games on Apple Arcade, but these are few and far between.SEGAWhen Apple Arcade is worthwhile. And when it isntTo be clear, Apple Arcade does have its downsides. For one thing, like any subscription service, its easy to forget about it, leave it unused for a long time, and keep paying while gaining no benefit. Theres also the risk of a game disappearing from Arcade, taking all your saved data with it. If you buy the same game in the regular App Store, youll have to start all over again.Even if you actively use Arcade, you have to think carefully about whether its worth it in the long run. If you end up playing a lot of different games on there, or if you share a subscription with family members, then it should pay for itself easily. But even casual gamers should find enough to play to make it worthwhile.Last year, there were just four Arcade games I played for more than just a few days. Only one of these is exclusive to Arcade: Sonic Dream Team. The others are available on the App Store for a fee: Balatro costs $9.99, Slay the Spire costs $9.99, and Vampire Survivors costs a whopping $12.75 with the additional content thats free in Apple Arcade. Thats already a total of $32.73, significantly less than the $49.99 it costs for a year of Arcade but not far off.So even if you dont want to jump into Apple Arcade with a long-term subscription, then you should at least give the month-long free trial a chance. You might be surprised at how many excellent games are available to play. And youll never be prompted to put in another quarter.

When it came to innovations in biotech, there was a clear winner: lenacapavir, a drug that was found to prevent HIV infections in 100% of the women and girls who received it in a clinical trial. You never hear 100% in medicine. The trial was the most successful weve ever seen for HIV prevention. The drug was safe, too (its already approved to treat HIV infections). And it only needed to be injected twice a year to offer full protection. This week, the results of a small phase I trial for once-yearly lenacapavir injections were announced at a conference in San Francisco. These early first in human trials are designed to test the safety of a drug in healthy volunteers. Still, the results are incredibly promising.
