Gurlaldeep shows how to set up a simulation in Blender for a peeling effect.
The effect is done by creating a spiral as a 'cutter' object first, which is applied as a boolean to the jacket of the potato. This peel is now animated using an animated weight map on a cloth modifier.

An add-on for procedural tears on 3D clothes
Have a look at this cool new tool that may come in handy. Titled Tear Painter, the Blender add-on from the Nodes Interactive team allows you to apply procedural wear and damage to digital clothes and fabrics using brush strokes, giving them a worn-out appearance.
