I would say I prefer the design of Mew, but it's really Mewtwo that makes both of them so iconic. In a vacuum Mew would honestly be a fairly standard (though very cute!) mythical Pokemon. It's Mewtwo's existence that adds this whole extra mythology and significance to the pair. And I don't think the inverse is true; Mewtwo would still be an incredible and pretty unique design amongst Legendaries even without its backstory and relation to Mew.
