Helldivers 2 has been a massive success for both Sony and Arrowhead since its launch in early 2024. It has been considerably bigger than its predecessor, although the first game still remains beloved by many. Fans of the first game would love to see more content from HD1, but Arrowhead has discussed the difficulties with bringing back content from the first game into Helldivers 2.

Arrowhead recently conducted a livestream to celebrate the launch of the Heart of Democracy update. The livestream was conducted with Arrowhead community manager, Mitch Ayre, as well as level designer, Vandela Bolin, along with community manager, Baskinator, serving as the moderator.
During the stream, they answered some questions from the community, and one question revolved around bringing back missions from HD1. In a snippet shared by Glitch Unlimited on YouTube, Bolin said that, although it’s a “cool idea” and Arrowhead know “people want to see more Helldivers 1 things return,” the studio “don’t just want to retread old ground with the first game”.
Bolin stated that Arrowhead “want to pick and choose some really special things to bring into Helldivers 2 from the first game,” and added that it’s all about “balance because some things were great and you want to bring them back,” but there is the issue that “the time it would take to recreate it would be the same time it would take to make something new”.
Community manager, Mitch, also explained that not everything is suitable or even possible because of the “complete change” from Helldivers 1 which was a top-down perspective whereas HD2 is third-person.
In an example explaining difficulties with the change in perspective, Bolin said, “I was very invested in wanting to recreate the metal detector mission from Helldivers 1, but it just doesn’t feel good in third-person”.
While not everything from HD1 can return, a lot of players do want enemies from the first game such as the Illusionist as part of the Illuminate. While the studio has teased the potential for more new enemies in the future, Arrowhead’s CCO has warned players “don’t want the Illusionist to arrive”.
