It took the form of a school bus, retrofitted former shop unit, modular pavilions and a ‘caretaker’s factory’. The judges thought the careful, colourful drawings were ‘totally brilliant’ and the socioeconomic programme ‘rigorous and fantastic’ – yet ‘all done with humour’. A floating solar farm in Huainan City, China is part of the country’s renewable power build-outImago / Alamy China, the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, has seen a slight decline in those emissions over the past twelve months, even as demand for power has gone up. This is an encouraging sign the country’s massive buildout of clean energy has begun to displace fossil fuels – but emissions could still surge again. That is according to an analysis of China’s economic and energy data by Lauri Myllivirta at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, a research organisation in Finland. According to the report, published in Carbon Brief, China’s CO2 emissions have declined by 1 per cent over the past 12 months; in the first quarter of 2025 alone emissions declined by 1.6 per cent relative to last year. Advertisement This isn’t the first time China’s CO2 emissions have dipped. For instance, they dropped in 2022 as the economy came to a standstill during covid-19 lockdowns. But this is the first time emissions have fallen even as the country has used more power. “That, of course, means the current fall in emissions has a much better chance of being sustained,” says Myllivirta. This is mainly a consequence of China’s record build-out of solar, wind and nuclear power, which is beginning to eat into the total electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. Wider economic shifts away from cement and steel production, which are carbon-intensive industries, have also contributed to the decline. Another factor is the jump in the share of people driving electric vehicles, which has cut into the demand for oil. If China maintains these trends, its carbon emissions could continue to fall. A sustained drop would indicate the country has passed peak emissions, putting it several years ahead of its 2030 target. The achievement would represent a substantial physical and psychological milestone for efforts to tackle climate change, says Myllivirta. Sign up to newsletter “If and when China’s leaders conclude that they’ve actually got a grip on the problem, and they’ve started to bring down emissions, that will enable China to be a much more forceful and much more positive player in international climate policy, and encourage others to move in the same direction as well,” he says. However, a number of factors could push China’s emissions back up. In the short term, a hot summer could raise demand for electricity-hungry air conditioning. As in 2022 and 2023, drought could reduce hydropower plants’ ability to generate electricity, forcing coal and gas power plants to make up the difference, says David Fishman at the Lantau Group, a consultancy in Hong Kong. And the Trump administration’s tariffs, which will have as-yet-unknown effects, have made forecasts of China’s emissions even more “wobbly”, says Myllivirta. In the longer term, to keep up with demand, China will also need to build hundreds of gigawatts per year of new clean power generation. Whether the country hits that mark will depend on the targets China’s government sets in its next five-year plan, due in 2026, and the pledges it makes under the Paris agreement ahead of this year’s COP30 summit. “The fate of the global climate doesn’t ride upon what happens in China this summer, but it does to a large part ride on what happens to China’s emissions over the next years and over the next decade,” says Myllivirta. Chicago, like many U.S. cities, has a history of building public housing and then tearing it down. Cabrini-Green, a textbook example, was demolished decades ago, along with so many other storied campuses around the country like Pruitt-Igoe in St. Louis. The National Public Housing Museum (NPHM) opened its doors last month in Chicago’s near West Side to help tell this multivalent, often times tumultuous story. It’s sited at 919 South Ada Street inside the last remaining vestige of Jane Addams Homes, a New Deal–era campus by Holabird & Root. The institution is the first of its kind. NPHM was founded by public housing residents—its goal is to become “a place to experience stories of hope and personal achievement amid struggle, resistance, and resilience,” NPHM said in a statement. Landon Bone Baker Architects (LBBA) oversaw the adaptive reuse effort, shepherded by Peter Landon. The campaign took 18 years to complete from start to finish—the most noticeable changes on the exterior are new signage, painted onto the brick facade, and a new entryway. Sunny Fischer cofounded NPHM and now sits on the board. She grew up in the Bronx at a public housing campus. Fischer called NPHM a Site of Conscience, or a space to remember and address past injustices and their ongoing legacies. “As a Site of Conscience, we join museums around the world committed to telling complicated and difficult stories, preserving history, and imagining a more just future,” Fischer said. Three historic apartments were reconstructed at a 1:1 to scale to show how different generations of public housing residents lived. NPHM also has a REC Room, a curated space by DJ Spinderella showcasing the beats and melodies born on public housing campuses. We’ve always had a voice. Now we have a place that listens.” NPHM executive director Dr. Lisa Yun Lee said the longterm mission is solidifying housing’s place as a human right, not a commodity. Lee envisions it as an “important civic anchor that brings people together to imagine innovative solutions and envision a more equitable future.”

The tiny frog still packs a colourful punchAlexander Tamanini Mônico Resplendent with its blue stripes and golden legs, this newly described poison dart frog may look imposing, but it is only about the size of a thumbnail, measuring just 14 to 17 millimetres from the tip of its snout to its derrière, or cloaca. Esteban Koch at the National Institute of Amazonian Research in Manaus, Brazil, and his colleagues found the frog in the forests of the Juruá river basin in Brazil in 2023 and went back to look for further specimens in 2024. The team has now officially described it and named the species Ranitomeya aetherea. Advertisement Little is known about the frog, but there are clues about its parental care system. Koch’s team hasn’t found any large groups of tadpoles, hatched from a big clutch of eggs. Instead, they have spotted only individuals, mainly in water-filled cavities where leaves join the stem on palm-like plants called Phenakospermum guyannense. The team saw one female deposit a single egg, which suggests that eggs are laid singly, as happens in some other poison dart frogs. “It’s possible that the female goes back when the tadpole is developing and lays another unfertilised egg, so that the tadpole can eat this to get energy,” says Koch. The researchers don’t know how big the population of the frogs is, so can’t tell if it is endangered, but in the year between the two surveys, they saw there had been deforestation in the area they searched, which they accessed via a small plane and then an 8-hour boat trip on the river. “As the frog is really specific to this plant in this area, any small disturbance could be dangerous to the species,” says Koch. The highly contagious virus infects the stomach and intestines, causing vomiting and diarrhoea that typically resolve within a few days. “Billions are lost from the economy globally every year because of the lost days of work and hospitalisation,” says Sarah Caddy at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Advertisement Sean Tucker at biotech company Vaxart in San Francisco and his colleagues previously developed an oral vaccine that boosted levels of IgA antibodies that can block norovirus from entering cells, suggesting it could prevent infections. Now, the researchers have tested this on 141 people aged between 18 and 49, about half of whom took the pill, while the others took a placebo. A month later, all the participants intentionally swallowed a high dose of the GI.1 strain of norovirus in liquid form, while in quarantine. “In the real-world setting, you need 10 to 100 viral particles to be infected, and we use 1 million particles,” says Tucker. This helped to ensure enough people got infected, he says. In the following week, 82 per cent of those in the placebo group became infected, but only 57 per cent of vaccinated participants did. Sign up to newsletter “I think most individuals would be interested in taking [the vaccine] if you can reduce your risk by around [25 percentage points] and avoid getting really debilitating symptoms,” says Caddy, who wasn’t involved in the study. The team also found that vaccinated participants shed substantially less virus in their stool and vomit than those who took the placebo. This suggests the vaccine could slow the spread of the virus, although that needs to be directly tested, says Caddy. In another analysis, the scientists confirmed that the vaccine probably works by boosting levels of protective IgA antibodies in saliva and in the gut, blood and nose. However, it is unclear how long this protection would last. Further work is also needed to verify the findings in young children and older adults, who are especially at risk of being hospitalised, says Caddy. Most noroviruses that infect humans belong to two groups, known as GI and GII. Based on unpublished work by his team, the GI.1 vaccine would probably protect against other closely related GI variants, says Tucker. The team is also developing a vaccine that can protect against GI and GII viruses. If all goes well, Tucker hopes the GI.1 vaccine could be rolled out in two to three years. This was a reaction to harms caused by drugs like thalidomide, which can lead to birth defects. Even before the ban (which was lifted for non-pregnant women in 1993) women and female animals were regularly excluded from research – their fluctuating hormone levels seen as complicated noise. Female data is still often extrapolated from research on male animals. The cost of this lack of inclusion is clear: it has skewed our understanding of health and disease and left us woefully ill-informed about conditions that predominantly affect women.Advertisement A classic example of this came in 2013, when more than 20 years after the sleep aid zolpidem was approved, the FDA halved the recommended dose for women as evidence emerged they experienced more daytime drowsiness than men, leading to more driving accidents. Progress is being made. Increasingly, researchers are considering sex as an important biological variable, leading to recent discoveries that women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression, for instance, and that they get cardiovascular disease at lower levels of blood pressure. If these conditions predominantly affected men, there would be more treatments available But there is still work to do. While many funders now insist that research includes two sexes, conditions that mostly affect women – such as migraine, endometriosis and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (see “Surprising insights into the causes of PMDD promise better treatments”) – continue to attract much less funding in proportion to their burden on the population. That hormones and their actions make research more complex should be a reason to invest more, not less. Had these conditions predominantly affected men, there would no doubt be more treatments available. SoundCloud has altered its platform policies to require opt-ins for training generative AI models with artists' music following widespread user backlash, the company announced today in a letter from its CEO.On Friday, Futurism broke the story that SoundCloud had quietly updated its Terms of Use (TOU) in February 2024 with language allowing it to train AI using users' uploaded content, which could include uploaded music.The updated terms — which were flagged by users on Bluesky and X (formerly-Twitter) — included some exceptions to account for music and other content licensed under third parties. But the AI provision was overall extremely broad, and could feasibly grant the music-sharing site the right to funnel much of its vast content library into generative AI models as training material, whether now or in the future.Though the change was made back in February 2024, it seemed like site users were largely unaware of the change. Artists responded with rage and frustration, taking to social media to express their anger at the company and, in many cases, claiming they'd deleted and scrubbed their accounts.In response to the mess, SoundCloud issued a lengthy statement clarifying that, despite the provision's sweeping language, it hadn't used artists' music to train AI models. To rectify that, said Seton, the company revised its user terms, which now bar SoundCloud from using artists' music to "train generative AI models that aim to replicate or synthesize your voice, music, or likeness" without the explicit consent of artists.The new clause adds that should SoundCloud seek to use its artists' music to train generative AI, it would have to earn that consent through opt-in mechanisms — as opposed to opt-outs, which are notoriously slippery.Seton also reiterated SoundCloud's commitment to blocking third parties from scraping SoundCloud for AI training data, and characterized the changes as a "formal commitment that any use of AI on SoundCloud will be based on consent, transparency, and artist control."According to Seton, the initial AI policy change was a reflection of SoundCloud's internal use of AI for features like music discovery algorithms and Pro features, fraud detection, customer service, and platform personalization, among other features. SoundCloud also uses AI to target opted-in users with advertisements based on their perceived mood. It also allows users to upload AI-generated music, and boasts a slew of partnerships with platform-integrated AI music and generation tools.If there's any moral here, it's that language matters, as do the voices of the artists who power creative platforms — especially in an era where data-hungry AI models and the companies that make them are looking to suck up valuable human-made content wherever they can.Seton, for his part, promised that SoundCloud would "keep showing up with transparency.""We're going to keep listening.
