Geoff Keighley's annual Summer Game Fest showcase had a few big moments, including a major showing from Capcom, some sharp-looking indie games from well-known developers, and a creative tie-in between Hitman and James Bond by IO Interactive.
Find a selection of 10 key SGF 2025 highlights below, including all-new reveals and several worthwhile updates on already-announced games.
    End of Abyss
Created by Section 9 Interactive, a Malmö-based studio of developers who worked on the Little Nightmares games, and published by Epic Games itself, this was the horror highlight of SGF. In End of Abyss, a combat technician explores a facility that's riddled with fleshy monsters, in what looks a little like a twin-stick survival horror shooter.
New pathways will emerge in the game as players become stronger, suggesting something of a Metroidvania structure. This one doesn't have a specific release date yet beyond 2026, but it's coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
    Lego Voyagers

This two-player Lego game from the developers of Lego Builders Journey left an impression with a simple but perfect pitch: what if you played as a single Lego brick, and the entire game was built around that notion?
Anyone still craving high-value co-op experiences for couch play after finishing this year's wonderful Split Fiction should keep this beautiful-looking game on their radar. It's coming to PC and consoles, including the original Nintendo Switch, and will be playable either locally or online.
    Mina the Hollower

Mina the Hollower, the long-awaited new game from Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games, got a release date of October 31, 2025 during SGF. This trailer will set off fireworks for anyone familiar with its inspirations: Link's Awakening and the other Game Boy Color Zelda games, for example, as well as the side-scrolling adventures of the Castlevania series.
    Marvel's Deadpool VR

Rather a lot of licensed games made the cut in this Summer Games Fest. Meta's big reveal at SGF was Deadpool VR, another superhero-themed exclusive coming to Quest 3, following last year's killer app Batman: Arkham Shadow.
This game stars Neil Patrick Harris as Marvel's Merc with a Mouth, and comes from 'Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel. As ever, Deadpool's delivered-via-sledgehammer meta humour is something of an acquired taste, yet the recent history of pop culture would suggest it's never been more popular.
Deadpool VR's first-person combat and storytelling look authentic to the character, which is either a dream come true or a living nightmare, depending on who you ask. It launches exclusively on Quest 3 and 3S in late 2025.
Ill and Mundfish's push into publishing
Mundfish, the latest developer to move into publishing, had a big presence in this year's SGF livestream. That included a colourful-if-muddled trailer for Atomic Heart 2, a follow-up to its 2023 hit FPS.
But perhaps more interesting was the horror-themed FPS Ill, the debut game from studio Team Clout. What could be more frightening than being chased by dozens of decaying bald men, and occasionally, some fetid-looking evil giant babies? This game will launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, but it doesn't have a release date yet.
    Scott Pilgrim EX

Considering the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels ended 15 years ago, the longevity of a story about a down-on-his-luck 20-something fighting all his new partner's exes in sequence continues to amaze. This spiritual sequel to 2010's acclaimed Ubisoft tie-in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game sees Scott and six of his pals teaming up to fight three different warring gangs who have taken over Toronto.
Developer Tribute Gamescomprises staff who worked on that prior Ubisoft title. Pleasingly for fans, too, series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley is behind the story on this project. With four-player co-op part of the mix, Scott Pilgrim EX launches in 2026.
Casino Royale's Le Chiffre comes to Hitman: World of Assassination

With IO Interactive's James Bond game First Light not arriving until 2026, this reveal was a real treat for fans of 007, and a fun stopgap. Actor Mads Mikkelsen joined IO's Hakan Abrak on-stage in announcing that his Casino Royale villain Le Chiffre has been added to Hitman: World of Assassination's Paris level as a limited-time Elusive Target. Players have until July 6 to take him out.
    Blighted

Guacamelee studio Drinkbox is behind this visually stylish action RPG, which looks like it'll scratch the itch of anyone who got deep into Hades but wants something with a fresh twistto play. The setting is described as a 'psychedelic western nightmare' by the developers, and a 'blighted' mechanic alters the difficulty of the game dynamically depending on how afflicted the player is. It's coming soon to Steam.
    Stranger Than Heaven

First unveiled last year as Project Century, this deeper look at the next project by Like A Dragon developer RGG Studio showed off the game's 1943period Japanese setting, as well as its combat and other gameplay elements like moral choices.
Considering the last trailer was set in 1915, it would appear to suggest the game takes place across multiple decades. It's exciting to see this studio trying something a little different, even if some of the parts are superficially similar.
    Resident Evil Requiem

The reveal of the ninth mainline Resident Evil game closed the livestream with a bang. Requiem is slightly hard to grasp from this first trailer, perhaps by design: the protagonist is an agent called Grace Ashcroft, and we see several glimpses of the ruins of Raccoon City amid the horrors in this teaser.
No doubt Capcom will gradually put the pieces together in the run-up to its February 27, 2026 release date on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. It firmly looks like a stylistic follow-up to the first-person hits Resident Evil 7 and Village. On-stage, it was promised the game will feature "high-stakes cinematic action" as well as survival horror.

  • Australia becomes first country to force disclosure of ransomware payments

TL;DR: Canberra authorities are embracing a tough approach to ransomware threats. A new law will require certain organizations to disclose when and how much they have paid to cybercriminals following a data breach. However, experts remain unconvinced that this is the most effective way to tackle the problem.
Companies operating in Australia must now report any payments made to cybercriminals after experiencing a ransomware incident. Government officials hope the new mandate will help them gain a deeper understanding of the issue, as many enterprises continue to pay ransoms whenever they fall victim to file-encrypting malware.
Originally proposed last year, the law applies only to companies with an annual turnover exceeding million. This threshold targets the top 6.5 percent of Australia's registered businesses – representing roughly half of the country's total economic output.
Under the new law, affected companies must report ransomware incidents to the Australian Signals Directorate. Failure to properly disclose an attack will result in fines under the country's civil penalty system.
Authorities are allegedly planning to follow a two-stage approach, initially prioritizing major violations while fostering a "constructive" dialogue with victims.

Starting next year, regulators will adopt a much stricter stance toward noncompliant organizations. The Australian government has implemented this mandatory reporting requirement after concluding that voluntary disclosures were insufficient. In 2024, officials noted that ransomware and cyber extortion incidents were vastly underreported, with only one in five victims coming forward.
Ransomware remains a highly complex and growing phenomenon, with attacks reaching record levels despite increased law enforcement actions against notorious cyber gangs. Although several governments have proposed similar regulations, Australia is the first country to formally enact such a law.
    // Related Stories

Jeff Wichman, director of incident response at cybersecurity firm Semperis, cautions that mandatory reporting is a double-edged sword. While the government may gain valuable data and insights into attacker profiles, the law may not reduce the frequency of attacks.
Instead, it could serve mainly to publicly shame breached organizations – while cybercriminals continue to profit. A recent Semperis study found that over 70 percent of 1,000 ransomware-hit companies opted to pay the ransom and hope for the best.
"Some companies, they just want to pay it and get things done, to get their data off the dark web. Others, it's a delayed response perspective, they want negotiations to happen with the attacker while they figure out what happened," Wichman explained.
According to the study, 60 percent of victims who paid received functional decryption keys and successfully recovered their data. However, in 40 percent of cases, the provided keys were corrupted or ineffective.

  • Amazon Fire Sticks are enabling billions in video piracy, report finds

Why it matters: It's somewhat ironic that arguably the biggest piracy enabler today is a device that comes from Amazon, a trillion tech giant with a streaming service. According to a new report, jailbroken Amazon Fire Sticks are used to watch billions of dollars worth of pirated streams, and Google, Meta and Microsoft are exacerbating the situation.
A report from Enders Analysis, titled "Video piracy: Big tech is clearly unwilling to address the problem," looks at the issue of illegal streams.
Driving the piracy epidemic, particularly in Europe, is the sports broadcasting industry. The BBC reports that the overall value of media rights for this business passed billion last year, which means fans are paying increasingly higher prices to watch sports on TV, especially if they pay for multiple services. UK soccer fans had to pay around in the 23/24 season if they wanted to watch all televised Premier League games.
The same is also true for mainstream streamers such as Netflix and Disney Plus, which keep raising their subscription costs and clamping down on account sharing.

Paying so much in these economically uncertain times has pushed more people into canceling their legitimate streaming services and turning to pirated alternatives.
The report notes that Tom Burrows, head of global rights at the world's largest European soccer streamer, DAZN, called streaming piracy "almost a crisis for the sports rights industry."
    // Related Stories

Comcast-owned European TV giant Sky Group echoed the warnings. It said piracy was costing the company "hundreds of millions of dollars" in revenue.
Many high-profile events, such as major games, can draw tens of thousands of viewers away from legal services and toward the many pirated streams showing the same content at a fraction of the price – or free.
Most people are familiar with jailbroken Amazon Fire Sticks being used to access illegal streaming services – the report calls the device a "piracy enabler." According to Sky, 59% of people who watched pirated material in the UK over the last year did so using a Fire Stick. The report says that the device enables "billions of dollars in piracy" overall.

Would you pirate this pirate show?
"People think that because it's a legitimate brand, it must be OK. So they give their credit card details to criminal gangs. Amazon is not engaging with us as much as we'd like," said Sky Group COO Nick Herm.
As with all forms of piracy, there are risks associated with this trend. Providing credit card details and email addresses to those behind the services isn't exactly safe, and there have been cases of jailbroken, malware-infested pirate streaming devices – not just Fire Sticks – being sold on eBay, Craigslist, and the dark web.
There has been a crackdown on the sale of hacked Fire Sticks in the UK recently. Last year saw a man given a two-year suspended sentence for selling the devices, while another was jailed. Just using these sticks or illegal IPTV subscriptions is breaking the law.
It's not just Amazon that is being blamed. The report highlights Facebook's lack of action to stop ads for illegal streams running on the platform. Google and Microsoft are also called out for the "continued deprecation" of their respective DRM systems, Widevine and PlayReady; the report says they "are now compromised across various security levels." Microsoft's last update to PlayReady was December 2022.
"Over twenty years since launch, the DRM solutions provided by Google and Microsoft are in steep decline," reads the report. "A complete overhaul of the technology architecture, licensing, and support model is needed. Lack of engagement with content owners indicates this a low priority."
Amazon says it is working with industry partners and relevant authorities to combat piracy and protect customers from the risks associated with pirated content. The company has takensteps to make turning Fire TV-branded devices into piracy boxes more difficult. These include raising the technical bar, and adding warning messages about legality. Moreover, Amazon is switching Fire TV devices from Android to the Linux-based Vega OS later this year, which doesn't run Android APKs at all.

The report notes that Tom Burrows, head of global rights at the world's largest European soccer streamer, DAZN, called streaming piracy "almost a crisis for the sports rights industry." // Related Stories Comcast-owned European TV giant Sky Group echoed the warnings. It said piracy was costing the company "hundreds of millions of dollars" in revenue. Amazon Fire Sticks are enabling “billions of dollars” worth of streaming piracy, according to a report today from Enders Analysis, a media, entertainment, and telecommunications research firm. Technologies from other media conglomerates, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook, are also enabling what the report’s authors deem an “industrial scale of theft."
The report, "Video piracy: Big tech is clearly unwilling to address the problem," focuses on the European market but highlights the global growth of piracy of streaming services as they increasingly acquire rights to live programs, like sporting events.
Per the BBC, the report points to the availability of multiple, simultaneous illegal streams for big events that draw tens of thousands of pirate viewers.
Enders' report places some blame on Facebook for showing advertisements for access to illegal streams, as well as Google and Microsoft for the alleged “continued depreciation” of their digital rights managementsystems, Widevine and PlayReady, respectively. Ars Technica reached out to Facebook, Google, and Microsoft for comment but didn’t receive a response before publication.
The report echoes complaints shared throughout the industry, including by the world’s largest European soccer streamer, DAZN. Streaming piracy is “almost a crisis for the sports rights industry,” DAZN’s head of global rights, Tom Burrows, said at The Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit in February. At the same event, Nick Herm, COO of Comcast-owned European telecommunication firm Sky Group, estimated that piracy was costing his company “hundreds of millions of dollars” in revenue. At the time, Enders co-founder Claire Enders said that the pirating of sporting events accounts for “about 50 percent of most markets.”
    Jailbroken Fire Sticks
Friday's Enders report named Fire Sticks as a significant contributor to streaming piracy, calling the hardware a “piracy enabler.”
Enders’ report pointed to security risks that pirate viewers face, including providing credit card information and email addresses to unknown entities, which can make people vulnerable to phishing and malware. However, reports of phishing and malware stemming from streaming piracy, which occurs through various methods besides a Fire TV Stick, seem to be rather limited.

Still, at the February Financial Times event, Herm said that Fire Sticks account “for about half of the piracy in the UK.”
“People think that because it’s a legitimate brand, it must be OK. So they give their credit card details to criminal gangs. Amazon is not engaging with us as much as we’d like," he said.
In the UK, there has been a push to crack down on illegal usage of Fire Sticks. For example, in November 2024, a man received a three-year, four-month sentence for hacking Fire Sticks. In June 2024, another man got a two-year suspended sentence after a police raid found jailbroken Fire Sticks in his home. In the US, however, there aren’t nearly as many publicized efforts to combat illegal streaming on Amazon devices.
While Enders’ report accuses Amazon of contributing to the piracy problem, as the owner of its own streaming service, Prime Video, Amazon has an incentive to fight piracy. Amazon’s streaming business includes selling streaming hardware, but the business is more centered on getting people to sign up for Amazon services, data collection, and ad sales.
When reached for comment, an Amazon spokesperson told Ars Technica:
Pirated content violates our policies regarding intellectual property rights and compromises the security and privacy of our customers. We work with industry partners and relevant authorities to combat piracy and protect customers from the risks associated with pirated content. Our Appstore prohibits apps that infringe upon the rights of third parties, and we warn customers of the risks associated with installing or using apps from unknown sources.
Amazon’s representative also told Ars that Amazon works with industry partners to break up piracy networks and has assisted law enforcement efforts, including the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit in London and UK IP Crime Group.

    DRM limitations
Enders’ report also blamed poorly updated DRM systems, especially from Google and Microsoft, for contributing to streaming piracy. Google’s Widevine and Microsoft’s PlayReady "are now compromised across various security levels,” the report said, pointing to a lack of upkeep. Microsoft issued its most recent big update to PlayReady, version 4.6, in December 2022.
    The report authors wrote:
Over twenty years since launch, the DRM solutions provided by Google and Microsoft are in steep decline.
A complete overhaul of the technology architecture, licensing, and support model is needed. Lack of engagement with content owners indicates this a low priority.
Outside of Enders' report, Google was criticized by the Italian government earlier this year for allegedly failing to block pirate websites identified by Italy’s communication regulator, AGCOM. In March, the Court of Milan ordered Google to poison its public DNS servers with the goal of blocking illegal soccer streams.
And beyond the aforementioned tech giants, earlier this month, France ordered five VPN providersto block illegal sports streaming sites. Unsurprisingly, the move has been slammed by VPN providers as setting “a dangerous precedent," per i2Coalition, an Internet infrastructure trade association that manages the international VPN Trust Initiative consortium of VPN providers.
    A growing problem
As the Internet solidifies its position as the primary method for watching shows, movies, and, increasingly, live events, it presents new challenges to content distributors and owners seeking to curb online piracy.
In the case of sports, especially, the distribution of sports rights across various linear networks and streaming services often means signing up for multiple services in order to watch a single team’s season. For some fans—including NFL players themselves—that's financially and/or logistically impractical. Simultaneously, anti-piracy advocates argue that piracy could lead to higher subscription fees for streaming services.
As legislation and rights holders become more stringent about piracy, we can expect more effort from tech providers and law enforcement to block piracy, while hackers also seek new ways to enable illegal streams.

  • Atomfall Story Expansion Arrives Next Week – Dare You Visit Wicked Isle?

Category: GamesMay 30, 2025 Atomfall Story Expansion Arrives Next Week – Dare You Visit Wicked Isle?

Ben Fisher, Head of Design, Rebellion

For those of you who are new to the game, Atomfall is an action-survival mystery set in the UK. The story takes place five years after the real-life events of the 1957 Windscale Disaster in the North of England. In the world of Atomfall, a quarantine zone has been established around the Atom Plant and no one has been allowed in or out for five years. Life and society have changed and adapted under these trying circumstances and gangs of strange folk now wander the countryside.

You wake up in a bunker with no idea who you are or how you got there. Given the circumstances you have little choice but to set out on a journey to discover what really happened at Windscale and maybe try to find out who you are in the process.

The Wicked Isle expansion adds a whole new location, with its own set of characters and enemies as well as additional leads, weapons, skills, items and multiple new endings for the main game.

    What is the Wicked Isle?

Surrounded by murky and perilous waters lies a wicked isle… a mysterious new region to explore, nestled off the Cumberland coast. They say there was a creepy old fishing village out there, but the locals haven’t seen anyone from there for years.

The Wicked Isle is an entirely new area for players to explore in Atomfall, accessible by boat from the village of Wyndham. It’s a region that gave us an opportunity to really double down on the Folk Horror influences that you find throughout the game, as well as hints of sci-fi and cold war paranoia for good measure.

When developing the Wicked Isle, there were two real-world locations that acted as key inspirations. The first was Lindisfarne – the “Holy Island” – which is a monastery on an island off the coast of Britain and was famously raided by Vikings in the 9th century. On the wicked isle, an Abbey towers over everything and constantly entices you to explore what secrets it holds within.

The other major inspiration was Anthrax Island, a real-world island off the coast of Scotland that was used for military experiments during the Second World War. The entire island was quarantined until the 1990s as a result of the tests, and you might find evidence of similar experiments as you explore Wicked Isle.

    Explore the Isle’s Mysteries

Shrouded by dense fog, this strange isle holds secrets that lead to the heart of the mystery of what really happened at the Windscale Plant.

The Wicked Isle is located close to the Atom Plant and as a result, infection had spread rapidly and had a significant effect on the environment and the people that live there. You will have to tread carefully!

As you investigate the island you will uncover new leads and story threads. While some of these are standalone stories, some leads link back to the overarching narrative of Atomfall as you seek to uncover what really happened.

You will have to travel back to the mainland in search of clues and items which will in turn unlock multiple new potential endings for the main game.

    Uncover New Treasures

While exploring you will find new items, weapons, and skills to help you as you survive in the Quarantine Zone. Deadly blunderbusses, upgraded metal detectors, and otherworldly abilities are just some of the things you’ll find on the isle.

In creating these new weapons, we had an immediate and impactful opportunity to link to the key themes we were exploring in this story expansion – whether it be the Blunderbuss and Cutlass tying to the nautical history of the isle itself or some of the stranger ritualistic weapons used by the pagan druids who have made this their home.

However, I’m most excited to see how people interact with the new abilities that the Wicked Isle brings. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but you’re going to find some pretty weird stuff going on out there.

    Face Fearsome Foes

The inhabitants of the isle have not escaped the impact of the disaster. A deranged druid cult has become even more powerful through their pagan rituals; roaming bandits have embraced the island’s nautical past and strange creatures lurk in the watery depths. If you want to survive, you’ll need to be prepared to fight back.

The response from the community to Atomfall has been incredible and we cannot wait for players to experience Wicked Isle. The stories and leads you uncover there and the people you will meet along the way add even greater depth to the mystery of Atomfall.

Available from June 3, the Wicked Isle Story Expansion Pack can be bought separately and is also included in the Atomfall Deluxe Edition and Atomfall Deluxe Upgrade. Game Pass subscribers will also receive a 10% discount. We hope you enjoy visiting the dark and lonely waters.

Atomfall Story Expansion Arrives Next Week – Dare You Visit Wicked Isle?
Category: GamesMay 30, 2025 Atomfall Story Expansion Arrives Next Week – Dare You Visit Wicked Isle? Ben Fisher, Head of Design, Rebellion For those of you who are new to the game, Atomfall is an action-survival mystery set in the UK. Explore the Isle’s Mysteries Shrouded by dense fog, this strange isle holds secrets that lead to the heart of the mystery of what really happened at the Windscale Plant. Uncover New Treasures While exploring you will find new items, weapons, and skills to help you as you survive in the Quarantine Zone. Face Fearsome Foes The inhabitants of the isle have not escaped the impact of the disaster. In 2025, Christopher Nolan is the top filmmaker in Hollywood concerning power, notoriety, and recognition. 20 years ago, Nolan did not have the same juice he has now. However, Batman Begins is arguably the movie that changed his career. The previous Batman movies treated Bruce Wayne like a comic book character. Nolan crafted a more grounded and nuanced version of the character, starting with a gritty origin story in Batman Begins.
After years of training and traveling globally, Bruce Waynereturns to Gotham City and becomes Batman, the masked vigilante intent on ridding the city of crime. Batman’s foes include his former mentor, Henri Ducard, and Scarecrow, two men who believe Gotham isn’t worth saving. After watching Batman Begins, stream The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, which also leave at the end of the month.
    Stream Batman Begins on Netflix.
    Den of ThievesSTXfilms
What a comeback year it’s been for Den of Thieves. The cult classic’s popularity led to a sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which premiered in January. Plus, a third movie is now in the works. However, these sequels would not have been possible without the original from 2018. Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves is a heist film set in Los Angeles that pits the cops against the robbers.
The lines are blurred as neither side is good nor evil. The police are led by Big Nick O’Brien, a renegade cop who frequently breaks the law to apprehend the enemy. The outlaws’ leader is Ray Merrimen, a former Marine and mastermind of a heist crew. Merrimen’s group plans to hit the Federal Reserve Bank, and Big Nick plans to stop it. It’s going to get loud, violent, and chaotic once these two sides battle.
Stream Den of Thieves on Netflix.
    Pride & PrejudiceUniversal Pictures
“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love you.” Jane Austen fans will recognize that iconic line from Joe Wright’s terrific adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. In the English countryside live the five Bennet sisters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. The girls have been pressured by their father to find a suitable husband, particularly a wealthy one.
The free-spirited Elizabeth has no plans to marry for money and will hold out for love. Could that man be Mr. Darcy? Good luck not falling in love with the will-they-won’t-they dilemma between Elizabeth and Darcy.
Stream Pride & Prejudice on Netflix.

    GoodFellasWarner Bros. Pictures
Martin Scorsese’s greatest movie is about to leave Netflix, which is a crime against humanity. The late Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill, a Brooklyn teenager who advances within the ranks of the Mafia to become one of its top lieutenants. While working for the mafia, Henry becomes closely associated with Jimmy Conway, an Irish-American gangster, and Tommy DeVito, a fiery criminal.
The trio reaps the rewards of being in the mafia — money, drugs, and power. These items also lead to their demise. The brilliance of Goodfellas is how Scorsese divides the story into two halves. The first half glamorizes the mafia lifestyle, while the second half explores the dark consequences of being a gangster. Describing Goodfellas as a masterpiece does not do it justice.
    Stream Goodfellas on Netflix.
Two Weeks Notice Warner Bros. Pictures
Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant starring in Two Weeks Notice is equivalent to Captain America and Iron Man joining the Avengers. Bullock and Grant became two of the ’90s biggest names, especially in rom-coms. The stars aligned in Two Weeks Notice, Marc Lawrence’s take on the opposites attract trope. Lawyer Lucy Kelsonwill do whatever it takes to protect the environment. Billionaire George Wadeonly cares about himself and his money.
Lucy works for George after he promises to save a community center. At first, oil and water are a better mix than Lucy and George. Over time, the duo come to appreciate one another’s company and gain feelings. Even with a predictable ending, Two Weeks Notice will satisfy anyone who loves on-screen chemistry between the leads.

  • U.S. Dismantles DanaBot Malware Network, Charges 16 in $50M Global Cybercrime Operation

The U.S. Department of Justiceon Thursday announced the disruption of the online infrastructure associated with DanaBotand unsealed charges against 16 individuals for their alleged involvement in the development and deployment of the malware, which it said was controlled by a Russia-based cybercrime organization.
The malware, the DoJ said, infected more than 300,000 victim computers around the world, facilitated fraud and ransomware, and caused at least million in damages. Two of the defendants, Aleksandr Stepanov, 39, and Artem Aleksandrovich Kalinkin, 34, both from Novosibirsk, Russia, are currently at large.
Stepanov has been charged with conspiracy, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information, unauthorized impairment of a protected computer, wiretapping, and use of an intercepted communication. Kalinkin has been charged with conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a computer to obtain information, to gain unauthorized access to a computer to defraud, and to commit unauthorized impairment of a protected computer.
The unsealed criminal complaint and indictment show that many of the defendants, counting Kalinkin, exposed their real-life identities after accidentally infecting their own systems with the malware.
"In some cases, such self-infections appeared to be deliberately done in order to test, analyze, or improve the malware," the complaintread. "In other cases, the infections seemed to be inadvertent – one of the hazards of committing cybercrime is that criminals will sometimes infect themselves with their own malware by mistake."

"The inadvertent infections often resulted in sensitive and compromising data being stolen from the actor's computer by the malware and stored on the DanaBot servers, including data that helped identify members of the DanaBot organization."
If convicted, Kalinkin is expected to face a statutory maximum sentence of 72 years in federal prison. Stepanov would face a jail term of five years. Concurrent with the action, the law enforcement effort, carried out as part of Operation Endgame, saw DanaBot's command-and-controlservers seized, including dozens of virtual servers hosted in the United States.
"DanaBot malware used a variety of methods to infect victim computers, including spam email messages containing malicious attachments or hyperlinks," the DoJ said. "Victim computers infected with DanaBot malware became part of a botnet, enabling the operators and users of the botnet to remotely control the infected computers in a coordinated manner."
DanaBot, like the recently dismantled Lumma Stealer malware, operates under a malware-as-a-servicescheme, with the administrators leasing out access starting from to "several thousand dollars" a month. Tracked under the monikers Scully Spider and Storm-1044, is a multi-functional tool along the lines of Emotet, TrickBot, QakBot, and IcedID that's capable of acting as a stealer and a delivery vector for next-stage payloads, such as ransomware.
The Delphi-based modular malware is equipped to siphon data from victim computers, hijack banking sessions, and steal device information, user browsing histories, stored account credentials, and virtual currency wallet information. It can also provide full remote access, log keystrokes, and capture videos. It's been active in the wild since its debut in May 2018, when it started off as a banking trojan.
    Example of typical Danabot infrastructure
"DanaBot initially targeted victims in Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Australia prior to expanding its targeting posture to include U.S.- and Canada-based financial institutions in October 2018," CrowdStrike said. "The malware's popularity grew due to its early modular development supporting Zeus-based web injects, information stealer capabilities, keystroke logging, screen recording, and hidden virtual network computingfunctionality."
According to Black Lotus Labs and Team Cymru, DanaBot employs a layered communications infrastructure between a victim and the botnet controllers, wherein the C2 traffic is proxied through two or three server tiers before it reaches the final level. At least five to six tier-2 servers were active at any given time. A majority of DanaBot victims are concentrated around Brazil, Mexico, and the United States.
"The operators have shown their commitment to their craft, adapted to detection and changes in enterprise defense, and with later iterations, insulating the C2s in tiers to obfuscate tracking," the companies said. "Throughout this time, they have made the bot more user-friendly with structured pricing and customer support."
    High-level diagram of multi-tiered C2 architecture
The DoJ said DanaBot administrators operated a second version of the botnet that was specially designed to target victim computers in military, diplomatic, government, and related entities in North America and Europe. This variant, emerging in January 2021, came fitted with capabilities to record all interactions happening on a victim device and send the data to a different server.
"Pervasive malware like DanaBot harms hundreds of thousands of victims around the world, including sensitive military, diplomatic, and government entities, and causes many millions of dollars in losses," said United States Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California.
The DoJ further credited several private sector firms, Amazon, CrowdStrike, ESET, Flashpoint, Google, Intel 471, Lumen, PayPal, Proofpoint, Spycloud, Team Cymru, and Zscaler, for providing "valuable assistance."
Some of the noteworthy aspects of DanaBot, compiled from various reports, are below -

DanaBot's sub-botnet 5 received commands to download a Delphi-based executable leveraged to conduct HTTP-based distributed denial-of-serviceattacks against the Ukrainian Ministry of Defencewebmail server and the National Security and Defense Councilof Ukraine in March 2022, shortly after Russia's invasion of the country
Two DanaBot sub-botnets, 24 and 25, were specifically used for espionage purposes likely with an aim to further intelligence-gathering activities on behalf of Russian government interests
DanaBot operators have periodically restructured their offering since 2022 to focus on defense evasion, with at least 85 distinct build numbers identified to dateThe malware's infrastructure consists of multiple components: A "bot" that infects target systems and performs data collection, an "OnlineServer" that manages the RAT functionalities, a "client" for processing collected logs and bot management, and a "server" that handles bot generation, packing, and C2 communication
DanaBot has been used in targeted espionage attacks against government officials in the Middle East and Eastern Europe
The authors of DanaBot operate as a single group, offering the malware for rent to potential affiliates, who subsequently use it for their own malicious purposes by establishing and managing their own botnets using private servers
DanaBot's developers have partnered with the authors of several malware cryptors and loaders, such as Matanbuchus, and offered special pricing for distribution bundles
DanaBot maintained an average of 150 active tier-1 C2 servers per day, with approximately 1,000 daily victims across more than 40 countries, making it one of the largest MaaS platforms active in 2025

Proofpoint, which first identified and named DanaBot in May 2018, said the disruption of the MaaS operation is a win for defenders and that it will have an impact on the cybercriminal threat landscape.
"Cybercriminal disruptions and law enforcement actions not only impair malware functionality and use but also impose a cost to threat actors by forcing them to change their tactics, cause mistrust in the criminal ecosystem, and potentially make criminals think about finding a different career," Selena Larson, a staff threat researcher at Proofpoint, said.

"These successes against cyber criminals only come about when business IT teams and security service providers share much-needed insight into the biggest threats to society, affecting the greatest number of people around the world, which law enforcement can use to track down the servers, infrastructure, and criminal organizations behind the attacks. Private and public sector collaboration is crucial to knowing how actors operate and taking action against them."

DoJ Unseals Charges Against QakBot Leader
The development comes as the DoJ unsealed charges against a 48-year-old Moscow resident, Rustam Rafailevich Gallyamo, for leading efforts to develop and maintain the QakBot malware, which was disrupted in a multinational operation in August 2023. The agency also filed a civil forfeiture complaint against over million in cryptocurrency seized from Gallyamov over the course of the investigation.
"Gallyamov developed, deployed, and controlled the Qakbot malware beginning in 2008," the DoJ said. "From 2019 onward, Gallyamov allegedly used the Qakbot malware to infect thousands of victim computers around the world in order to establish a network, or 'botnet,' of infected computers."
The DoJ revealed that, following the takedown, Gallyamov and his co-conspirators continued their criminal activities by switching to other tactics like "spam bomb" attacks in order to gain unauthorized access to victim networks and deploy ransomware families like Black Basta and CACTUS. Court documents accuse the e-crime group of engaging in these methods as recently as January 2025.
"Mr. Gallyamov's bot network was crippled by the talented men and women of the FBI and our international partners in 2023, but he brazenly continued to deploy alternative methods to make his malware available to criminal cyber gangs conducting ransomware attacks against innocent victims globally," said Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office.

"In other cases, the infections seemed to be inadvertent – one of the hazards of committing cybercrime is that criminals will sometimes infect themselves with their own malware by mistake." "The inadvertent infections often resulted in sensitive and compromising data being stolen from the actor's computer by the malware and stored on the DanaBot servers, including data that helped identify members of the DanaBot organization." If convicted, Kalinkin is expected to face a statutory maximum sentence of 72 years in federal prison. "Victim computers infected with DanaBot malware became part of a botnet, enabling the operators and users of the botnet to remotely control the infected computers in a coordinated manner." DanaBot, like the recently dismantled Lumma Stealer malware, operates under a malware-as-a-servicescheme, with the administrators leasing out access starting from to "several thousand dollars" a month. • Microsoft raises posse to target dangerous Lumma malware

A broad coalition of technology partners and law enforcement agencies, spearheaded by Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, has disrupted the dangerous Lumma Stealer malware-as-a-serviceoperation, which played a key role in the arsenals of multiple cyber criminal gangs, including ransomware crews.
Using a court order granted in the US District Court of the Northern District of Georgia earlier in May, the DCU and its posse seized and took down approximately 2,300 malicious domains that formed the core of the Lumma operation.
“Lumma steals passwords, credit cards, bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, and has enabled criminals to hold schools to ransom, empty bank accounts and disrupt critical services,” said DCU assistant general counsel, Steven Masada.
At the same time, the US Department of Justiceseized the MaaS central command structure and targeted the underground marketplaces where access was sold, while elsewhere, Europol’s European Crime Centreand Japan’s Cybercrime Control Centrewent after locally hosted infrastructure.
Europol EC3 head Edvardas Šileris, said: “This operation is a clear example of how public-private partnerships are transforming the fight against cyber crime. By combining Europol’s coordination capabilities with Microsoft’s technical insights, a vast criminal infrastructure has been disrupted. Cyber criminals thrive on fragmentation – but together, we are stronger.”
In a blog post detailing the takedown, Masada said that over a two-month period, Microsoft had identified more than 394,000 Windows computers that had been infected by Lumma. These machines have now been “freed”, with communications between Lumma and its victims severed.

This joint action is designed to slow the speed at whichactors can launch their attacks, minimise the effectiveness of their campaigns, and hinder their illicit profits by cutting a major revenue stream

Steven Masada, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit

At the same time, about 1,300 domains seized by or transferred to Microsoft – including 300 actioned by Europol – are now redirecting to Microsoft-operated sinkholes.
“This will allow Microsoft’s DCU to provide actionable intelligence to continue to harden the security of the company’s services and help protect online users,” said Masada. “These insights will also assist public- and private-sector partners as they continue to track, investigate and remediate this threat.
“This joint action is designed to slow the speed at which these actors can launch their attacks, minimise the effectiveness of their campaigns, and hinder their illicit profits by cutting a major revenue stream.”

The Lumma Stealer MaaS first appeared on the underground scene about three years ago and has been under near-continuous development since then.
Based out of Russia, and run by a primary developer who goes by the handle “Shamel”, Lumma offers four tiers of service, starting fromand rising to an eye-popping for which buyers receive access to Lumma’s style and panel source code, the source code for plugins, and the right to act as a reseller.
In conversation with a cyber researcher in 2023, Shamel claimed to have approximately 400 active users.
When deployed, the goal is typically to monetise stolen data or conduct further exploitation. Like a chameleon, it is difficult to spot and can slip by many security defences unseen. To lure its victims, Lumma spoofs trusted brands – including Microsoft – and spreads through phishing and malvertising.
As such, it has become something of a go-to tool for many, and is known to have been used by many of the world’s more notorious cyber crime collectives, including ransomware gangs. Its customers likely included, at one time, Scattered Spider, the group thought to be behind the ransomware attack on Marks & Spencer in the UK, although there is no public evidence to suggest it was used in this incident.
Blake Darché, head of Cloudforce One at Cloudflare, which provided key support during the takedown, said: “Lumma goes into your web browser and harvests every single piece of information on your computer that could be used to access either dollars or accounts – with the victim profile being everyone, anywhere, at any time.
“The threat actors behind the malware target hundreds of victims daily, grabbing anything they can get their hands on. This disruption worked to fully set back their operations by days, taking down a significant number of domain names and ultimately blocking their ability to make money by committing cyber crime.
“While this effort threw a sizeable wrench into the largest global infostealer’s infrastructure, like any threat actor, those behind Lumma will shift tactics and reemerge to bring their campaign back online,” said Darché.

At the same time, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) seized the MaaS central command structure and targeted the underground marketplaces where access was sold, while elsewhere, Europol’s European Crime Centre (EC3) and Japan’s Cybercrime Control Centre (JC3) went after locally hosted infrastructure. Europol EC3 head Edvardas Šileris, said: “This operation is a clear example of how public-private partnerships are transforming the fight against cyber crime. By combining Europol’s coordination capabilities with Microsoft’s technical insights, a vast criminal infrastructure has been disrupted. Cyber criminals thrive on fragmentation – but together, we are stronger.” In a blog post detailing the takedown, Masada said that over a two-month period, Microsoft had identified more than 394,000 Windows computers that had been infected by Lumma. These machines have now been “freed”, with communications between Lumma and its victims severed. This joint action is designed to slow the speed at which [threat] actors can launch their attacks, minimise the effectiveness of their campaigns, and hinder their illicit profits by cutting a major revenue stream Steven Masada, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit At the same time, about 1,300 domains seized by or transferred to Microsoft – including 300 actioned by Europol – are now redirecting to Microsoft-operated sinkholes. “This will allow Microsoft’s DCU to provide actionable intelligence to continue to harden the security of the company’s services and help protect online users,” said Masada. “These insights will also assist public- and private-sector partners as they continue to track, investigate and remediate this threat. “This joint action is designed to slow the speed at which these actors can launch their attacks, minimise the effectiveness of their campaigns, and hinder their illicit profits by cutting a major revenue stream.” The Lumma Stealer MaaS first appeared on the underground scene about three years ago and has been under near-continuous development since then. Based out of Russia, and run by a primary developer who goes by the handle “Shamel”, Lumma offers four tiers of service, starting from $250 (£186) and rising to an eye-popping $20,000, for which buyers receive access to Lumma’s style and panel source code, the source code for plugins, and the right to act as a reseller.
