Nintendo has already showcased tons of new racers and courses, but how many can players look forward to? It’s a difficult question because, as producer Kosuke Yabuki notes in an Ask the Developer interview, “You don’t just race on the courses. The areas between courses are also used for racing. So it’s as if there are courses spread out all over the world, and if you were to add up all the possible variations, it would easily exceed 100.” The open world is also notable for offering optional activities, like unlocking new outfits and hundreds of P Switches with their own unique challenges. It looks pretty good, but that’s only half the Mario Kart presentation. The other half is the soundtrack, with tons of new songs promised. “For other modes like Free Roam, we prepared lots of music in addition to course themes and made it so the game would automatically select the right track depending on the situation,” says music lead Atsuko Asahi. “During development, we called this the ‘jukebox.’ For this, we created lots of arrangements of music composed for past Super Mario and Mario Kart games. Overall, there are more than “200” in the “jukebox,” which Asahi reveals are “all brand-new arrangements, and we also did live recordings. We prepared pieces from quite a wide variety of musical genres. I believe those who are well-versed in video game music as well as those who aren’t will enjoy listening to them.” Mario Kart World launches on June 5th for the Nintendo Switch 2 at $79.99 and has garnered controversy for being the company’s first game with this price point. With a wave of new previews dropping, Choi has since confirmed to VGC that it will launch alongside an update that adds difficulty options. Available for the base game and expansion, the new difficulty options are called “Butterfly’s Guidance” and “Awakened Puppet.” The default difficulty will henceforth be known as “Legendary Stalker” (which surely isn’t foreshadowing for Overture’s events). Regarding the decision to include difficulty options, Choi said, “We wanted to make sure a wider audience of players could play the game.” He also confirmed that they were implemented based on player and developer feedback. “So by making development adjustments and introducing these difficulty options, we can offer the experience to different types of players. After shadow-dropping last month, it crossed 216,000 concurrent players on Steam (despite also being available on PC Game Pass). It would surpass four million players in four days and become the third best-selling game in the United States for 2025. Circana’s latest data for video game spending in the US has since confirmed that it topped sales charts for April 2025. Executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella added that it topped sales across PC, Xbox and PlayStation. But that’s not all. Oblivion Remastered sold more copies in its first month than the original did in its first 15 months combined. Full-game dollar sales are also higher than Oblivion’s first 14 months combined. Considering that the latter launched in March 2006 and sold over three million by January 2007, it’s safe to say that the remaster has beaten that, which is once again impressive considering it’s on Game Pass. Image: Nintendo LifeShigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Pikmin, recently sat down with IGN to talk about the new Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, of which Super Nintendo World and its Donkey Kong Country expansion are a part. Now, we all know Miyamoto is basically untouchable at this point, but for the purposes of the interview, even he was given a few guidelines to follow. Primarily, he was told not to talk about the Switch 2, since the purpose was to focus on the theme park. When he was asked about the upcoming console, however, Shigsy just couldn't help himself... So Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here. My family has a calendar on our fridge where we're crossing off the days until it's here. In your opinion, what's the most exciting thing about it? Miyamoto: So I’d love to, but I've been told by PR that this is not an interview about Nintendo Switch 2. Looking at the younger, next generation of players, I think one of the most exciting things about Nintendo Switch 2 is the ability to have the upgrade patches to original games that provide a more enhanced experience and then add on top of that new experiences. And so leaving the development environment as is, we're able to build these games and now that we have more powerful hardware, there's more power left over that can be used for other experiences. I think for example, it gives indie developers the ability to expand on the unique experiences that they've been able to provide with a smaller group. And so because of that, I think the fact that the mouse or voice chat is part of the Nintendo Switch 2 package is something that's very attractive and exciting. And obviously look forward to the new Donkey Kong game as well! Oh Miyamoto-san... never change, sir. It's clear his enthusiasm got the better of him here, but it's nice to see that he's equally as excited about the Switch 2 as everybody else. He also touched on why Donkey Kong had received such a drastic redesign, noting that Nintendo wanted the character to become more expressive. You want expressive?
