Macworld The Finder is the main user interface for managing files on the Mac. Think of it as the starting point for navigating macOS–it’s like the Home Screen on an iPhone and iPad. You probably don’t give the Finder much thought, but it’s one of the most important places on your Mac. Because of that, you should make the most of that time. You can tweak the Finder so it better suits the way you do things, and there are a few tasks you can do within the Finder instead of in an app. Here are 10 things you should know so you can get the most out of the Finder. 1. Finder and Desktop explained The Quick Take function in the Finder lets you see a preview of a file. Foundry This is an explanation of terminology. Before you can master the Finder, it helps to understand the difference when, say, you’re looking up support documents on Apple.com or reading a how-to on Macworld. You hear people refer to the Desktop on the Mac. The Desktop and the Finder are two parts of a whole. The Finder is actually an app that runs all the time. The Desktop is a component of the Finder; to paraphrase Apple, the Desktop is the space between the menu bar at the top, and the Dock at the bottom (or the bottom of the screen, if your Dock is not located there or is hiding). If you click on the Desktop, notice that the app you end up in is the Finder. So, if you’re working with someone on a Mac and you’re told to go to the Desktop or Finder, they’re usually referring to the same thing. Now, the Finder and Desktop differ in functionality. You can place files on the Desktop, and you can set the Finder to display icons so you can access storage devices, servers, and more. The Finder itself offers other functions, such as windows to navigate and manage files, Quick Look (select a file and then press the spacebar to see a preview of it), syncing with an iPhone, and more. 2. Add multiple Desktops Navigate between Desktops in Mission Control. Foundry Now that you know what the Desktop is, you might now know that you can have multiple versions of it. It’s a great way to organize the window and app clutter that easily builds up. It’s especially useful on single-display Mac setups. To launch another Desktop, you use an app in macOS called Mission Control, which is opened by: Pressing the F3 key or pressing Control+Up Arrow Swiping with three fingers upwards on the Magic Trackpad Double-tap with two fingers on a Magic Mouse Dragging a window to the top of the screen When you enter Mission Control, a bar replaces the menu bar at the top of your screen. It will list the Desktops you currently have, which will be just one to start. Move the cursor over the bar, and it expands to show thumbnails of your Desktops. To add another Desktop, click on the “+” icon on the right side of the bar. (Apple’s documentation refers to a Desktop in Mission Control as a “Space” and that bar as the “Spaces bar.” But I’m going to keep calling them Desktops to minimize confusion.) Once you’ve created more Desktops (the limit is 16), you can move app and Finder windows below the bar to specific Desktops, making your workspace much more organized. For example, I usually have two Desktops, one with the apps for writing Macworld articles, and a second one with just email and Slack. Sometimes I launch a third Desktop for image, video, or audio editing.  To move between Desktops on a Magic Trackpad, swipe with three or four fingers left or right. On a keyboard, press Control+Left or Right Arrow. 3. Customize what you see Customize the Finder in Finder > Settings. Foundry Because a lot of users don’t think of the Finder as an app, they don’t realize that the Finder has Settings. When in the Finder, click on Finder in the menu bar, and you’ll find Settings. This is where you can make the most adjustments to customize the Finder to your preferences. As you can see above, I very rarely use Tags, Music, or Movies, so I have unchecked them to hide them in the Sidebar section. 4. Right-click to see more RIght-click on the FInder icon in the Dock to see more options. Foundry Clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock brings the Finder to the forefront and opens the Finder Window. However, if you right-click (or Control+click, or do a two-fingered click on a Magic Trackpad), you’ll find more options available to help navigate your Mac. It’s a useful tool for those times when the Desktop clutter is a total mess. 5. Take Action Finder Quick Actions allows access to Finder extensions that can be installed by the apps you use. Foundry When right-clicking a file in the Finder, the contextual menu that appears offers several options for you. One of them is Quick Actions, which are tasks you can do based on the file type. For example, Quick Actions for a graphic file may have options for Rotate Left, Covert Image, Remove Background, and more, without the need of opening an app. Not every file type has Quick Actions available. There isn’t a place like the App Store where you can get more Quick Actions. These are provided by the apps you install on your Mac. For example, if you install Pixelmator Pro, it offers its own Remove Background Quick Action. You can turn on/off Quick Action functions in System Settings > General; scroll down to the Extensions section, find the Finder section, and click its “i” icon. A list of Quick Actions will appear with switches to turn them on/off. 6. Add a widget Desktop widgets provide instant access to information you constantly want.Foundry About two years ago, Apple introduced macOS Desktop widgets. This is a feature brought over from iOS and it allows you to put app widgets that stay on your Desktop for quick access. For example, the Calendar widget shows your daily schedule without needing to open the Calendar app, which you can open by clicking the widget. Widgets that are made for iOS are brought over the macOS, so the available widgets you have are based on what iPhone and iPad apps you have. You can see a list of widgets by right-clicking any space on the Desktop and selecting Edit Widgets in the contextual menu. They can live on your Desktop or in the notification sidebar. 7. Show the Clipboard What’s in your Clipboard? Find out through this option. Foundry What would happen to our productivity if cut/copy and paste disappeared? It’s a standard function on any computing device, but have you ever wondered what exactly is currently in the clipboard? You can find out in the Finder. Go to Edit > Show Clipboard, and a window pops up to display the clipboard contents. Most of the time, you can see what’s in there–if it’s text, you’ll see it, if it’s an image, it’s there. Some items don’t appear, for example, when I copy a video clip in iMovie, the Clipboard is blank and the identifier at the bottom says Clipboard contents: unknown. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing in the Clipboard, it just means it’s not being displayed. This probably isn’t a feature you’ll use often, but it might be a good idea to check your Clipboard to make sure any private information isn’t in there. However, there isn’t an easy way to clear the clipboard. You can copy blank space from a document, and it will look like there’s nothing in your Clipboard, or copy something of no value. You can erase the Clipboard in the Terminal by entering pbcopy < /dev/null and then pressing Return. Also, when you restart your Mac, the Clipboard gets wiped out every time. Third-party Clipboard utilities allow you to manage Clipboard contents and also have other features like multiple clipboards and the ability to save clipboards after the Mac restarts. 8. Rearrange the sidebar Rearrage the Sidebar by clicking and dragging. Foundry In Finder Windows, the Sidebar lists areas where you will access files. By default, they’re listed alphabetically within their sections, but you can rearrange them by clicking and dragging. You can even move the sections; if you want to move, say, the iCloud section to the bottom, just click the iCloud header and drag it to the bottom. You can determine what items appear in the Finder Settings under Sidebar. For example, if you don’t want AirDrop in the list, you can go into Settings and uncheck the AirDrop box. 9. Supercharge your folders Set up scripts that can apply automated actions to a folder. Foundry There’s a little-used feature in the Finder called Folder Actions Setup and what it does is that it performs actions on files within the folder. For example, you can set up a Folder so that when you place images into it, the images are automatically converted to jpegs. To use Folder Action Setup, right-click on a folder and select Folder Action Setup from the pop-up menu. macOS includes a few actions you can use, most of them for use with images, such as format conversion, rotation, or flipping. There is one action that makes an alert appear whenever a folder has a new file added to it. These actions are AppleScripts; a script is a method of automating a set of tasks. You can create your own scripts and use them in Folder Action Setup if the ones in macOS aren’t what you need. Check out our guide to using Folder Action Setup. 10. Use an iPhone or iPad to take photos, scan, or sketch Use your iPhone to take a picture that is saved directly to the macOS Desktop. Macworld Right-click anywhere on the Desktop, and in the pop-up menu, select Import from iPhone or iPad. A pop-up appears that offers options to Take Photo, Scan Documents, or Add Sketch. Pick one and the Camera app opens for photos or scans, or a sketch app opens. Anything you create with those apps is saved to the Mac’s Desktop.

Scientists have discovered a previously unknown bacterium aboard China's Tiangong space station. "It has been named Niallia tiangongensis, and it inhabited the cockpit controls on the station, living in microgravity conditions," reports Wired. From the report: According to China Central Television, the country's national broadcaster, taikonauts (Chinese astronauts) collected swab samples from the space station in May 2023, which were then frozen and sent back to Earth for study. The aim of this work was to investigate the behavior of microorganisms, gathered from a completely sealed environment with a human crew, during space travel, as part of the China Space Station Habitation Area Microbiome Program (CHAMP). A paper published in the Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology describes how analysis of samples from the space station revealed this previously unseen bacterial species, which belongs to the genus Niallia. Genomic sequencing showed that its closest terrestrial relative is the bacterium Niallia circulans, although the Tiangong species has substantial genetic differences. [...] It is unclear whether the newly discovered microbe evolved on the space station or whether it is part of the vast sea of as yet unidentified microorganisms on Earth. To date, tens of thousands of bacterial species have been cataloged, although there are estimated to be billions more unclassified species on Earth. The discovery of Niallia tiangongensis will provide a better understanding of the microscopic hazards that the next generation of space travelers will face and help design sanitation protocols for extended missions. It is still too early to determine whether the space bacterium poses any danger to taikonauts aboard Tiangong, although it is known that its terrestrial relative, Niallia circulans, can cause sepsis, especially in immunocompromised people. In May 2023, Chinese astronauts swabbed several surfaces of their space station Tiangong (Mandarin for "Heavenly Place"), then sent the samples back to Earth for analysis. The results are now in: the sample contained one bacterium never before seen, according to a report in the International Journal of Systemic and Evolutionary Microbiology.New Bacteria in Space Station The samples were taken, according to the paper, to help keep astronauts healthy in subsequent missions. “Understanding the characteristics of microbes during long-term space missions is essential for safeguarding the health of astronauts and maintaining the functionality of spacecraft,” according to the paper.There are multiple plausible explanations for both the bacteria’s presence and novelty. It could have hitch-hiked with the astronauts and remained more or less the same (although thousands have been identified, there are potentially billions of unknown bacterium on our planet). It could have taken that same route, but mutated and evolved. Or it could be a strain only found in space.Bacteria Similarities and AbilitiesTo get a better picture of the possibilities, it might be best to parse the knowns from the unknowns. First, and perhaps most importantly, it is not completely novel. The bacteria shares enough genetic similarities (two significant stretches of DNA match or are conserved) with Niallia circulans for it to be considered the same genus. Therefore, the authors named it Niallia tiangongensis.Its general appearance also doesn’t appear to be completely out of this world. The paper described it as an “[…] aerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped strain.”It does appear to have some interesting abilities, though. According to the paper, it shows “a unique ability to hydrolyse gelatin.” This means it can break down some compounds and add components of water to them, perhaps as a way to feed themselves in an environment with little available food.Adaptations to SpaceDifferences in two proteins that resemble those in its cousin hint that it has evolved enhanced abilities to protect itself from some conditions specific to space. Those include tools to create a biofilm it could perhaps hide beneath, and the means to repair damage from radiation, among other abilities.Its terrestrial cousin has one concerning ability. It can cause infection — even sepsis. Microsoft, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), took a major step in dismantling one of the most prolific cybercrime tools currently in circulation. Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) collaborated with the DOJ, Europol, and several global cybersecurity firms to disrupt the Lumma Stealer malware network — a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) platform implicated in hundreds of thousands of digital breaches worldwide. According to Microsoft, Lumma Stealer infected over 394,000 Windows machines between March and mid-May 2025. The malware has been a favored tool amongst cybercriminals for stealing login credentials and sensitive financial information including cryptocurrency wallets. It’s been used for extortion campaigns against schools, hospitals, and infrastructure providers. According to the DOJ website, “the FBI has identified at least 1.7 million instances where LummaC2 was used to steal this type of information.” Recommended Videos With a court order from the U.S. District Court for the Northern Districts of Georgia, Microsoft took down roughly 2,300 malicious domains associated with Lumma’s infrastructure. The DOJ simultaneously took down five critical LummaC2 domains, which acted as command-and-control centers for cybercriminals deploying the malware. These domains now redirect to a government seizure notice. International assistance came from Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and Japan’s JC3, who coordinated efforts to block regional servers. Cybersecurity firms like Bitsight, Cloudflare, ESET, Lumen, CleanDNS, and GMO Registry assisted in identifying and dismantling web infrastructure. Inside the Lumma operation Lumma, also known as LummaC2, has been operating since 2022, possibly earlier, and makes its info-stealing malware available for sale through encrypted forums and Telegram channels. The malware is designed for ease of use and is often bundled with obfuscation tools to help it bypass antivirus software. Distribution techniques include spear-phishing emails, spoofed brand websites, and malicious online ads known as “malvertising.” Cybersecurity researchers say Lumma is particularly dangerous because it allows criminals to rapidly scale attacks. Buyers can customize payloads, track stolen data, and even get customer support via a dedicated user panel. Microsoft Threat Intelligence previously linked Lumma to notorious Octo Tempest gang, also known as “Scattered Spider.” In one phishing campaign earlier this year, hackers were able to spoof Booking.com and used Lumma to harvest financial credentials from unsuspecting victims. Who’s behind it? Authorities believe the developer of Lumma goes by the alias “Shamel” and operates out of Russia. In a 2023 interview, Shamel claimed to have 400 active clients and even bragged about branding Lumma with a dove logo and the slogan: “Making money with us is just as easy.” Long-term disruption, not a knockout Image used with permission by copyright holder While the takedown is significant, experts warn that Lumma and tools like it are rarely eradicated for good. Still, Microsoft and the DOJ say these actions severely hinder and disrupt criminal operations by cutting off their infrastructure and revenue streams. Microsoft will use the seized domains as sinkholes to gather intelligence and further protect victims. This situation highlights the need for international cooperation in cybercrime enforcement. DOJ officials emphasized the value of public-private partnerships, while the FBI noted that court-authorized disruptions remain a critical tool in the government’s cybersecurity playbook. As Microsoft’s DCU continues its work, this Lumma crackdown sets a strong precedent for what can be accomplished when industry and government specialists collaborate to eliminate threats. As more of these organizations are uncovered and disrupted, remember to protect yourself by changing your passwords frequently and avoid clicking links from unknown senders.

With over seven million players and extensive critical praise, NEOWIZ’s Lies of P resonated with many Souls-like fans, especially those who loved Bloodborne. There were demands for the option to rematch against bosses or even a boss rush, and NEOWIZ is finally obliging when the expansion, Overture, launches this Summer. As outlined by IGN in its preview, Battle Memories lets you battle previously cleared bosses at five different difficulty tiers, each adding different stats. Death March is your boss rush ticket and lets you consecutively challenge bosses to see how far you can go. You must select three at the very minimum, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any limit to how many can be fought. NEOWIZ seemingly hinted at rewards but didn’t provide more details. Both modes will be available in a free update when Overture launches, though it’s unknown if the expansion’s bosses can be selected in them. With how the new difficulty options apply to the base game and expansion, it seems a given. Lies of P: Overture will be available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Die by the Bitcoin: As kidnappings tied to crypto investments rise, some feel that exchanges like Coinbase aren't doing enough to protect their users. Criminals now have access to home addresses and account balances, and if the situation worsens, people won't just lose money – they could lose their lives. Coinbase recently disclosed a serious security breach in which unknown cybercriminals accessed highly sensitive user data. While the company works to contain the fallout, the cryptocurrency exchange's users now face potentially life-threatening risks. TechCrunch founder and crypto-enthusiast Michael Arrington argues that Coinbase and its executives should be held accountable. Coinbase's breach is especially significant because it operates the largest crypto exchange in the US and holds the world's most valuable Bitcoin deposits. Founded by Brian Armstrong, the company estimates the breach could ultimately cost between $180 million and $400 million. Cybercriminals exfiltrated data, including home addresses and account balances – information that, according to Arrington, could be enough to "lead to people dying." People have likely already died because of the massive cyber-heist, Arrington recently said on his X account. Criminals could use the stolen data to target large crypto investors, meaning the breach's human cost could far exceed the estimated $400 million in financial damages. Coinbase confirmed plans to reimburse those who lost their crypto assets – but you obviously can't refund someone's life. Companies that fail to protect customer data must face consequences, and executives should at least face prison time. Arrington, a longtime investor and "champion" of Coinbase, expressed deep disappointment with how the company is handling the breach. // Related Stories "Using the cheapest option for customer service has its price. And Coinbase's customers will bear that cost," he warned. Arrington also calls for rethinking government regulations around "know-your-customer" (KYC) processes, which require users to verify their real identities to access online platforms. He argues that regulators enforced KYC to help governments monitor and tax crypto activity, but the policy now creates serious safety risks when exchanges mishandle user data. Coinbase issued a handful of corporate-style statements addressing the concerns raised by Arrington and others. The company claims to take the matter seriously and is working with law enforcement to track down the criminals behind the breach. Crypto investors – and their families – were already targets of violent kidnappings before this incident. The situation will likely worsen for some of Coinbase's wealthiest users.

Google wants to give people access to its Gemini AI assistant with the blink of an eye: The company has struck a partnership with eyeglasses makers Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to make AI smart glasses, it announced at its Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View Tuesday. These glasses will be powered by Google’s new Android XR platform, and are expected to be released in 2026 at the earliest. To show what Gemini-powered smart glasses can do, Google has also built a limited number of prototype devices in partnership with Samsung. These glasses use a small display in the right lens to show live translations, directions and similar lightweight assistance. They also feature an integrated camera that gives Gemini a real-time view of your surroundings and can also be used to capture photos and videos. “Unlike Clark Kent, you can get superpowers when you put your glasses on,” joked Android XR GM and VP Shahram Izadi during Tuesday’s keynote presentation. [Photo: Janko Roettgers] Going hands- (and eyes-) on Google demonstrated its prototype device to reporters Tuesday afternoon. Compared to a regular pair of glasses, Google’s AI device still features notably thicker temples. These house microphones, a touch interface for input, and a capture button to take photos.Despite all of that, the glasses do feel light and comfortable, similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. The Google glasses’ big difference compared to Meta’s reveals itself almost immediately after putting them on: At the center of the right lens is a small, rectangular see-through display. It doesn’t obstruct your view of the world when not actively in use. However, during the demo, I at times noticed a purple reflection from the waveguide that’s at the core of the display in the upper right corner of my field-of-view. Google’s AI assistant can be summoned with a simple touch gesture. Once active, Gemini automatically accesses the outward-facing camera of the glasses, which makes it possible to ask about anything you see. During my short demo, the assistant correctly described the content of a painting, identified its painter, and offered some information about books hand-selected by Google for the demo. In addition to AI assistance, the glasses can also be used for live translation and navigation. Google only showed the latter to members of the media. When in Google Maps mode, the glasses automatically display turn-by-turn walking directions while looking up. Look down, and the display includes a small, circular street map floating in front of you. The display itself looked bright and legible, even when showing multiple lines of text at a time. However, Google conducted these demos indoors; it’s unclear how bright sunlight will impact legibility.  Also unknown at this point is how long the batteries of such a device will last. Android XR glasses are designed for all-day wear, according to Izadi, but that doesn’t really tell us how many hours they can be used at a time. Lots of open questions Third-party apps were also notably absent from the demo. Izadi said Tuesday that glasses running Android XR will work with your phone, “giving you access to your apps while keeping your hands free.” How exactly that will work is unclear, as the display integrated into the prototype was too small to display the full UI of most apps. Most likely, Android XR will render apps in a simplified, device-optimized fashion, similar to the way apps show up on smart watches such as the Apple Watch and Google’s Android Wear devices. The emergence of these kinds of devices also raises more fundamental questions about privacy. The prototype device shown at Google’s event this week has an LED that’s supposed to signal to bystanders when it takes photos or records video, and an internal LED that signals to the wearer when footage is being captured. However, the LED doesn’t turn on on while Google’s Gemini assistant observes the world through the camera. According to a Google spokesperson, that’s because any video ingested this way is not being stored, but only temporarily used to make sense of the world. Bystanders, however, may not be as receptive to that distinction. They may assume that a device that can “see” the world at all times also continuously captures video. Lastly, it’s still unclear what Google’s vision for other form factors looks like. The company also announced plans to release a pair of tethered AR glasses in partnership with Chinese AR startup Xreal Tuesday. With displays in both eyes, that device will be able to render much more immersive experiences, and presumably emphasize entertainment and work applications over more basic assistance. In addition, Google’s roadmap for Android XR-powered devices includes glasses without any display at all. These are likely going to be similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, albeit with access to Google’s Gemini assistant instead of Meta’s AI. Omitting a display brings down the manufacturing costs of smart glasses, while also helping with an important goal: To make devices that look and feel familiar to anyone who has ever worn a pair of glasses. “We know that these need to be stylish glasses that you’ll want to wear all day,” Izadi said.
