  • Trump Pentagon Purging Climate Change Measures, Hegseth Says, Raising Military Readiness Concerns

March 14, 20255 min readPentagon Starts Purging Climate Change MeasuresDefense Secretary Pete Hegseth wants to end the Pentagons climate efforts. Some experts say the move could hurt military readinessBy Scott Waldman & E&E News Debris litters Tyndall Air Force Base following Hurricane Michael on October 17, 2018 in Panama City, Florida. The base experienced extensive damage from the storm. Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle on October 10, as a category 4 storm causing massive damage and claiming nearly 30 lives. Scott Olson/Getty ImagesCLIMATEWIRE | The Defense Department has a new search-and-destroy mission. Its on the hunt for climate-related programs and studies.Last week, the Pentagon announced it had canceled multiple studies related to climate including several that sought to determine whether a hotter planet could lead to more instability in Africa. In addition, the Defense Department has spent the last few weeks combing outside contracts for the term climate with the intent to zero out all related work, according to two former Pentagon officials. The purge is being driven broadly by President Donald Trump, who previously has described climate change as a hoax. But it has taken on extra urgency under the leadership of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has long rejected climate science and has vowed to eliminate all the Pentagons climate-related work.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. We do training and warfighting. Its unclear how many climate initiatives are at risk for cancellation and how much money their erasure would save. The Pentagon said canceling 91 studies on climate and other topics would save $30 million, but it did not disclose how much money the Defense Department could save by eliminating other climate-related programs and studies. Pentagon officials did not respond to questions from POLITICOs E&E News seeking answers on these topics. Instead , they issued a statement that said the Defense Department was working to restore the warrior ethos and refocus our military on its core mission of deterring, fighting and winning wars.Climate zealotry and other woke chimeras of the Left are not part of that core mission, Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot said in a statement. But defense experts warn the rush to cancel these programs could backfire on the Pentagon. Studying and preparing for global warming isnt a liberal luxury, they say its essential to better understand how climate change could influence both global politics and battlefield conditions. It's about missions and not emissions, said John Conger, who served as principal deputy undersecretary of Defense in the Obama administration. As an example, he pointed to the risk that rising sea levels and more extreme storms pose to the constellation of U.S. military installations worldwide.Climate affects the military mission, it affects your ability to do your job, said Conger, who is a senior adviser to the Council on Strategic Risks. In particular with infrastructure, where you want to be able to endure extreme weather or other weather effects in order to retain capability, he said. But also in the battlefield, you want to be able to deal with the ambient conditions and the environmental conditions in order to conduct your warfighting mission. The Pentagons broad approach to global warming was outlined in a climate adaptation plan the agency released last year. It found that climate change was costing taxpayers billions of dollars, threatening supply chains and disrupting military readiness. Those impacts have affected training, infrastructure and the Defense Departments ability to execute its mission, the report said.To train, fight, and win in an increasingly complex threat environment, we must consider the effects of extreme weather and climate change at every level of the enterprise, the report found. For years, the militarys strategy has been to incorporate clean energy and alternate fuel technology into operations largely for strategic reasons, rather than cutting greenhouse emissions. But Trump and Hegseth both have targeted that work as wasteful and unnecessary. In particular, the two men have taken aim at efforts to develop hybrid tanks; on the campaign trail, Trump falsely claimed their purpose was to appease environmental groups. In reality, hybrid tanks largely run on diesel and are designed to have increased range by being less reliant on fuel. They also provide an operational advantage because they can switch to a hybrid battery to cut a heat signature that could be more easily detected on enemy radar. The army is now developing a hybrid-electric tank, which is essentially a modernization of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, though they are not yet deployed. The Defense Department has been exploring the development and deployment of additional hybrid tactical vehicles by 2035. A 2022 climate strategy plan also called for the development of all-electric tactical vehicles that could be used by 2050.That plan has now been deleted from the Defense Departments website. There are tremendous operational and capability advantages to using clean technology in the military, said Richard Kidd, who served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for environment and energy resilience in the Obama administration. He said clean energy technology is absolutely a part of modern warfare because todays battle spaces require electricity to charge drones, power AI at the edge, support directed energy weapons and certain types of hybrid-electric tactical vehicles."If the administration throws out everything that has the word climate in it the people, the structures and the contracts it risks undermining its own goals about energy dominance, competition with China, and accelerating the deployment of nuclear power, he said. That said, there remains some lingering frustration with the Biden administration over its efforts to infuse climate planning into a broad swath of military programs, including some that never were designed for emissions cutting. The push may have unnecessarily put a target on those programs, said Bret Strogen, who served as the energy and sustainability adviser for the assistant secretary of the Army in the first Trump administration.Climate resilience, climate adaptation, preparing for floods, drought, that is that is an area that DOD and everyone else needs to pay attention to, he said. Climate mitigation and reducing emissions is not the DOD's role."One defense expert warned the effort to eliminate climate programs and studies could create a future blind spot for the Pentagon. It could leave the military unprepared for the role of climate change as a threat multiplier, where more extreme storms, heat conditions and regional conflicts could hamper and harm U.S. troops and their warfighting abilities, said Sherri Goodman, deputy undersecretary of Defense for environmental security in the Clinton administration. She said U.S. allies and rivals will be fully utilizing that scientific intelligence. If we put our heads in the sand, that's a gift to China, said Goodman, author of Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security. They're aware of the climate risks they are faced with in their own country and around the world," she added. "And they are just looking to fill the power vacuum that we're creating.Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. Copyright 2025. • How to Fold a Fitted Sheet Without Making a Mess in 2025
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Knowing how to fold a fitted sheet is a deceptively tricky endeavorone false move, and youve got yourself a mess that looks more like a bundle than bed sheets. Unlike top sheets and pillowcases that have a flat surface that makes putting away these bed linens a cinch, folding a fitted sheet with rounded, bunched edges makes the prospect of folding them seem like an exercise in futility.Fitted sheets can vary depending on the material and depth of mattress, says Anisha Rajopadhye, merchandising manager of bedding at Quince. While you can get away with a simple fold method for crib fitted sheets, any standard fitted sheet requires that you first tuck the corners to create a rectangular shape, and then fold into thirds lengthwise until you have a compact square. Clearly anything with elastic corners that lives in your linen closet requires folding savvy, especially if dealing with a duvet cover seems easier. It makes sense that you may feel intimidated and come to accept that the elastic edges mean that your fitted bed sheet is bound to be, well, bound into some sort of roll-up. Dont give up just yet. You arent going to necessarily master folding a fitted sheet on your first try, so you cant get overwhelmed and give up, says Janelle Cohen, founder of Straighten Up by Janelle and author of The Folding Book: A Complete Guide to Create Space and Getting Organized. Take it slow, dont let the amount of fabric get the best of you, and take it step-by-step.Follow our expert guide on how to fold fitted sheets without getting all tangled up.What is the simplest way to fold a fitted sheet? If you only have a few minutes to tackle laundry, dont let folding a fitted sheet slow you down. Because of elastic corners, a fitted sheet is rounded so that the sheet can easily (at least in theory) adhere to the edges of your mattress. If you try to fold it as you would a flat sheet, it will likely look puffy. Thats because all the air gets trapped in the elastic edges. Crib sheets, which are typically 10 inches deep, may be an exception due to their smaller size. You might be able to get away with less pouf by folding them into vertical thirds, then again into thirds horizontally, Rajopadhye explains. For standard fitted sheets, lay them on a flat surface, so you can smooth out wrinkles and align edges more seamlessly, says Rajopadhye. Fabrics that are smoother and more prone to slipping will be easier to maneuver out on a table versus folding on your bed.Trickier are the fitted sheets with double elastic inserts. While great for a snug fit on your mattress, it can create extra bulk when folding, says Melanie Kaplan, product development merchant at The Company Store. To handle this, focus on the inner elastic layer first, tucking it neatly into a rectangle. Once this is smooth, fold the outer elastic layer over to finish.Remember: The first time you do this might be tricky. Practice with a more manageable twin-size fitted sheet. Start by folding the sheet in half on a flat surface. Take the top part of the sheet then fold it toward you. Then fold down the long side, with the elastic, back toward the center crease. Repeat the process with the sides, folding the elastic corners toward the center. Smooth the sheet out during the process to release the air. Once you have a square, fold the left side toward the right side. You should have a narrow rectangle that you can fold into threes.Step 1: Find the elastic cornersStart by placing your hands in the corners of your fitted sheet so that its long side is across your body (lengthwise). The elastic side of the sheet, not the fabric side, should be facing you. Hold the fitted sheet in front of you. Put your hands into the two top corresponding corners. This step might be easier if youre standing, especially if youre dealing with a king-size sheet.Think of it as a puppet show of bed linens.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 2: Invert the elastic cornersWith both hands inside the fitted sheet pockets, grab the inside of the right corner with your fingers and invert it. (If youre left-handed, it might be easier to start with the left-hand corner.) Your sheet will look a bit skewed. Thats okay. One elastic sheet corner should be inside out.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 3: Connect the elastic cornersAs youre holding on to the inverted corner with your fingers, find the inside of the left corresponding corner and fold the inverted (right) corner into it. The corner seams touch. If you see that the corner seams are parallel, youre on the right track.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 4: Flatten out the fitted sheetLay the sheet on a flat surface and straighten theedges. This side of the sheet should look like an L. Now look to the other side and repeat step 3. You should now have a U shape, with the elastic running lengthwise at the top.The sheet is now folded in half.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 5: Invert the elastic corners againInsert your hands into one of thepockets again. Notice that it has two layers now. Find the elastic corner, pinch with your fingers, and invert as you had done in step two.Youre repeating what you know.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 6: Connect the elastic corners, againTake the inverted side and connect it to the opposite corner, as you had done in step three. Youre back at the L shape, but now it should be four layers thick. The elastic should be in one corner.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 7: Push out the airAll four corners should be stacked together; if they are not, rearrange them with your hands and smooth the sheet as much as possible. Pushing out the extra air will make the next steps much easier.Try to make the sheet into a geometric shape like a square or rectangle, depending on the size of your fitted sheet.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 8: Smooth out the wrinklesLay the bed linen down on a flat surface and smooth out the wrinkles again. Take the straight edge of the sheet and fold it toward the elastic band about halfway.Folding over the flat edge portion makes the process a lot more manageable.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 9: Fold the fitted sheet into a rectangleFold over again to the opposite edge of the flat edge. Depending on the size of your sheet, you should have a narrow rectangle. At this point you can fold as you would with any flat sheet, folding over in doubles or thirds, depending on your storage space. The simplest step of them all: Fold into even sections, as you would a regular flat sheet.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaStep 10: Stack the fitted sheetsGiven that a fitted sheet with an elastic is bulkier overall, to keep the configuration neat, try to smooth out the air as you fold for the most compact storage without messy bunching. Stack the fitted sheet with other sheets in your linen closet.Youd never know which sheets are fitted and which are flat just by looking at this linen stack.Photo: Anki Spets for AreaDo fitted sheets get wrinkly when you fold them?Different fabrics will have different wrinkle tendencies. Percale cotton sheets may be light and airy, but they are known for hanging on to wrinkles. Crisp fabrics like percale cotton and linen will be easier to smooth out when theyre still warm from the dryer, Rajopadhye says. On the other hand, sateen woven fabrics are more forgiving. Flannel sheets, for instance, are thicker, which can make folding easier but slightly bulkier, Kaplan adds. Linen sheets and jersey sheets, like these organic fitted sheets by Coyuchi, are naturally a bit wrinkled, so even perfectionists can have a bit of leeway. Is there a trick to prevent wrinkles when you fold a fitted sheet?Anyone who has pulled a balled-up shirt out of a travel backpack knows just how impossible those wrinkles can be. The same laws apply to linens. The longer your linens sit in a pile, the deeper the wrinkles, Cohen says. Its a good idea to get this task over with as soon as your cotton sheets or linen sheets come out of the dryerif you can avoid creases in your bed linens (and get rid of a laundry pile), why not? This makes it easier to flatten the fabric with your hands as you move through each step, Rajopadhye says. When the folded sheets go into the linen closet without trapping wrinkles, your fitted sheets will look crisp as you put them back on the bed, getting you closer to that luxe hotel bedding look.Whats the best way to store folded fitted sheets? When done properly, a folded fitted sheet can look as tidy as neatly stacked pillow cases. In addition to creating a curated linen closet, properly folded fitted sheets can save a ton of space. Knowing how to fold an entire sheet set means that you can actually fit more than one or two sheet sets into your linen closet. If space is a concern, folding sheets in tight thirds or quarters saves shelf space without compromising the neatness, Kaplan recommends.Cohen compares it to playing Tetris. When you have more space, everything fits together like a nice puzzle. It also makes your space more cohesive and, therefore, less overwhelming, she adds. You can open your closets and feel ownership over what you have.To keep her linen closet organized, Rajopadhye reuses the drawstring pouches that come with her sheets. It helps keep folded sheets compact, especially for silkier fabrics like bamboo or silk, she says. I also tuck dryer sheets in my linen closet for a fresh scent!Ecole Basket by J'JuteWest Elm Jasper Wood Lidded BasketFor next-level linen organization, Kaplan advises investing in bins or baskets to separate sheets by bed size, room, or pattern. Labeling each bin keeps your linen closet tidy and saves time when youre looking for a specific set, she adds.MYARO Lemon Scented Sachets (Pack of 12)LAFCO Chamomile Lavender Scented Linen SachetRegardless of how you store your folded fitted sheets, check that your storage space has plenty of air circulation. One last tip from Kaplan: An herbal sachet or a cotton cloth infused with essential oils will keep your sheets smelling fresh.

  • 22 White Bedroom Ideas for Creating the Most Restful Retreat
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do you make a white bedroom pop?The best decor ideas to make a white bedroom pop depend on what specific mood youre trying to evoke in your bedroom. If youre hoping to create a more energetic space, you can pick a few bright accent colors and bring them in with a duvet, wall art, or smaller decor pieces. Otherwise you can make a white bedroom pop with different accents of brighter colors mixed with softer ones, says Markatos Lowe. As an example, a white bedroom mixed with pale watery linens is very soothing, but adding a pop of cobalt blue in bedside lamps or accent pillows creates a focal point to pop off the paler palette. How do you add warmth to a white bedroom?Consider your materials carefully to add warmth to a white bedroom. One solution to add warmth to a white bedroom is to choose metal finishes such as unlacquered antique brass, Markatos Lowe advises. The patina of the brass works to offset the starkness of the white walls. What colors are best to decorate within a white bedroom? The versatility of white is one of the best parts of decorating a white bedroom. The world is your oyster! White works with everything, so if you want to have the space pop, choose from a brighter palette to mix with the white, says Markatos Lowe. If you want the space to feel soft, then keep the fabrics paler and more tonal to each other.Relatedly, you shouldnt feel pressured to add loads of colors to a white bedroom if thats not aligned with your own taste. Ring uses plenty of color in her projects, but she still respects the power of an all-white bedroom. A white bedroom can be very meditative and point towards a calming feeling, Ring shares. Color is so personal and evokes different responses in different people, but a mostly white space I think feels universally calming.

  • Amazing: of all the books in all the world Mr Free Speech Zuckerberg wants to ban, its the one about him
    www.theguardian.com
I am as shocked as I am confused that Mark Zuckerberg is going all-out to block a memoir by Facebooks former director of global public policy, Sarah Wynn-Williams. I thought information wanted to be free? I definitely heard that speech should be. We know Metas revolting oligarch doesnt write his self-serving public pronouncements, but he should at least make time in his busy Magafication schedule to read them.Anyway, even if you think the stories in Careless People are untrue and I dont, for a single nanosecond I thought the Meta boss said disinformation wasnt a thing any more? He recently binned off all his factcheckers to dramatically reduce the amount of censorship. Yet here we are reading stories of how Meta this week launched an emergency action in the US to ban Wynn-Williams from promoting or further distributing copies of her book. It argued successfully, for now that it would face immediate loss in the absence of immediate relief.Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg in Idaho, 8 July 2021. Photograph: Kevin Dietsch/Getty ImagesHonestly, Mark: TOUGHEN UP! It was only about 10 minutes ago that you were telling Joe Rogan that corporations needed more masculine energy. If somethings wrong or dangerous or really seriously harmful, just let everyone keep seeing it because, freedom but pop a community note on it. As for how you put a community note on a book, my advice to you would be to go and stand outside Pan Macmillan, which bravely published Wynn-Williams, with a little sign saying context. Listen, if its a good enough bulwark against the risk of genocide in some boring old developing-world backwater, then it should be good enough for you.The grounds for Meta calling in emergency lawyers to block Wynn-Williamss book seem to be that she has gone against the terms of her severance. Luckily, none of us has a non-disparagement clause against Zuckerberg, who on this evidence and so much more should be disparaged every minute of every day in the countries where he operates, and even in the ones he doesnt. Theres a lovely bit in the book where his company is said to be dangling the possibility that itll give the Chinese regime special access to users data. Photograph: PRIn conversation, I overuse the phrase the worst people in the world, but the Facebook/Meta top brass really are up there. Wynn-Williamss book is that simultaneously satisfying yet horrifying thing an insider account that shows you that absolutely every single one of the awful things you already suspected apparently really did go on behind closed doors. As did a few you didnt suspect. I knew Sheryl Sandbergs brand of lean in feminism was bullshit but I didnt think it involved female employees being encouraged to lean into her lap/her bed on private planes.Shortly after turning this offer down, Wynn-Williams nearly dies in childbirth. Once shes back at work, her male boss tells her she was insufficiently responsive during the period. In my defence, says Wynn-Williams, I was in a coma for some of it. For light relief, we meet a shadowy Zuckerberg aide who supposedly games his bosss own algorithm so his posts have mega-engagement. Marks senior staff all let him win at Catan. And thats just the office politics stuff. The hardcore business what we might call the politics politics stuff is so much worse. Meta is currently insisting Wynn-Williams was ultimately fired for poor performance and toxic behaviour. But its amazing to think anyone at Meta could get fired for toxic behaviour. Im sure whatever theyve done didnt actively stoke a genocide, like the Rohingya claim that the firms negligence did in Myanmar. Im sure it couldnt be as bad as betraying vulnerable citizens in exchange for market penetration.Quite early on in Wynn-Williamss 2011-2017 stint at Facebook, a US Treasury official tells the Facebook execs theyre two years away from being hated as much as the investment banks. Well, that turned out to be adorably optimistic. I think we all love the cuddly old banks compared to companies such as Marks or Elons. But, of course, the tech firms are way, way too powerful to care.Meanwhile, the worlds children have simply been allowed to become hideously and destructively addicted to their products by politicians who either implicitly or,all western countries and plenty beyond have failed to protect children from the known iniquities and poison of social media. Australia alone has just banned it for under-16s. Ive no idea where Zuckerbergs children (the first born of whom he apparently asked Xi Jinping to name) go to school. But like metaphorical crack dealers many Silicon Valley bosses sent their kids to a specific local Steiner school where its all crocheted textbooks and chalkboards and no one is stupid enough to let the little scions near the narcotising horrors of the product. So on Meta sails. There are words and phrases for these supranational organised enterprises that harm societies and seemingly do whatever they like, and none of them is the nerdily bland tech firm. What was it that the Indians used to call the period of chaos and social instability wreaked by the East India Company, the rampaging entity/honourable company that I increasingly feel Meta is most redolent of? Ah yes: the anarchy. We live in a modern form of it now, thanks to Zuckerberg and others, and its way past time we did more than simply scroll defeatedly on.Marina Hyde is a Guardian columnistCareless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams (Pan Macmillan, 22).
