  • How breaking the rules of tic-tac-toe makes it way more fun
    www.newscientist.com
Two good players will always end noughts and crosses with a draw.Mikhail Rudenko/AlamyOn the beach, scratching marks in the sand with a stick, my 4-year-old son was already good enough to force a draw in noughts and crosses, also known as tic-tac-toe.In case there is anyone on the planet unfamiliar with this game, it is played on a 3 3 grid, with players taking turns to add their symbol an X or an O in one of the spaces. The winner is the first to place three of their symbols in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

  • I spent 3 days in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and saw how the ultra-rich live and vacation
    www.businessinsider.com
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a luxury enclave for some of America's wealthiest residents. The area is known for its extreme income inequality, with the top 1% earning vastly more.I visited Jackson Hole for the first time in 2024 to find out why the rich live and vacation there. There's a valley below the Teton mountain range where some of the wealthiest people in America kick back on their terraces and look out at a vast mountain landscape where mansions are hidden among the towering evergreen trees. They have saunas in their houses and spend thousands on custom-made cowboy hats with diamond bands.I'm talking about the wealthy enclave of Jackson Hole in Teton County, Wyoming one of the richest counties in the US.The town with themost unequal income in the US has long been a billionaire hideout. According to theEconomic Policy Institute, the top 1% of residents in the metro area earn 132 times the income of the bottom 99% of residents. The average income of the top 1% sits above a cool $16 million.A-listers from Kanye West and the Kardashians to Sandra Bullock and Harrison Ford have bought property in Jackson Hole.Still, I visited the city for the first time in September 2024 to see what makes this place so coveted for high earners.Lower taxes and mountain views draw wealthy DINKs and boomers to Jackson Hole.Pedestrians stroll through Downtown Jackson. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Affluent Americans from Texas to California are buying up property in Jackson Hole, a luxurious Wyoming escape.Mansions dot mountain ranges and a stroll downtown feels like the Wild West if you ignore the hoodies, baseball caps, and automobiles.Jackson Hole real-estate agent Sam Haack told Business Insider that his clients are usually boomers or DINKs (dual-income, no kids)."The baby boomers have largely gained their wealth through their appreciation of assets over the years like their equity portfolios, other homes, and businesses," he said. "Some of these clients may still work W2 jobs in finance, consulting, or real estate but are usually business owners and entrepreneurs."Sotheby's Jackson Hole-based real-estate agent Laurie Huff told BI that her clientele is similar."Our clients in the past few years have ranged in age from 30 to 60 years and come from high-net-worth backgrounds," she said in a statement. "A finance/business background seems to account for a large percentage."About half of incoming residents only live there part-time.A vacation home in Jackson Hole. Joey Hadden/Business Insider About 40% of Haack's sales are for full-time residents, and the other 60% are second homes and investment properties.About half of Huff's clients move in full-time. Joey Hadden/Business Insider According to Viehman Group's 2024 third-quarter Jackson Hole Real Estate report, the average price of a listing was $6.42 million."As a buyer, it is so competitive because of simple supply and demand," Haack told BI. "We have always had much more demand than supply because, well, it's one of the most beautiful places in the US, and the lifestyle is unmatched."The supply is very limited only 3% of the county is private land that can be built on. "The rest is public land owned by the federal, state, or local governments," he added.Since land is so scarce, Haack said buyers "tend to hang onto these properties for the appreciation and tax advantages, leading to even less inventory and supply."I understood why millionaires want to live in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, before my plane even landed.A view from a plane descending into Jackson Hole. Joey Hadden/Business Insider As we put our seats in the upright position to prepare for landing on my flight to Jackson Hole, I looked out the window to see Grand Teton National Park from above.Mountain ranges went on for miles between valleys and bodies of water. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Located inside Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole Airport is one of the smallest and most luxurious airports in the country. It's so tiny that passengers enter and exit the plane from outside. When I stepped onto the tarmac, I was immediately taken by the freshness of the air. I smelled hints of pine trees as the wind blew through my hair. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Home to the famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, Jackson is a small town with shops, restaurants, and architecture reminiscent of the American West. When I visited, the downtown area was full of tourists, but stores seemed to cater to locals, too. Joey Hadden/Business Insider Haack told BI that families tend to move to East Jackson, which is conveniently located near the town square. According to Sotheby's International Realty, the area has a mix of condos, townhouses, and single-family homes costing as much as $8.7 million."You'll find young families that ride their e-bikes to work and to get ice cream in the summer," he said of the area. From Wilson to Teton Village, the other parts of Jackson Hole are more remote and expensive.A mansion sits on a hill in Jackson Hole. Joey Hadden/Business Insider The richest residents in Jackson Hole tend to live in the more remote areas around Jackson in the greater Jackson Hole region: Kelly, Moose, Teton Village, and Wilson.Haack told BI that Teton Village and Wilson typically have the largest and most expensive homes in Jackson Hole."These two areas are popular due to their more quiet nature as well as being outside of the now traffic-filled town of Jackson," he added. These homes can be up to three stories high and have stunning architecture, water features, and, of course, views.A mega-mansion in Jackson Hole. Joey Hadden/Business Insider During my trip, I saw a mix of luxury cabins and modern mansions in these neighborhoods."The two main categories of architecture we see in Jackson Hole are log cabin (old Jackson style) and Mountain Modern (new Jackson style)," Haack told BI. "Log cabins never go out of style but do require a lot more maintenance."I saw modern homes with mixed materials, sleek exteriors, flat roofs, and patios with water features like fountains and mini waterfalls. I even went inside a mansion and found unique features from an indoor sauna to a double-sided fireplace.Due to zoning constrictions, Jackson Hole's mega-mansions can only be up to three stories tall, so many are sprawled out like ranches on vast properties. It seems like no matter where the rich choose to live in Jackson, they have incredible views.Mountains are visible behind a street in Jackson. Joey Hadden/Business Insider After seeing Jackson Hole for myself, I can see why people want to move and vacation there. The ultra-luxury vibe with Western flair seems like an ideal place to escape. And now that I've seen those mountains, I know I'll be back.

  • I made Ina Garten's chocolate-chunk blondies. They were cheap and easy to make, and my book club couldn't get enough of them.
    www.businessinsider.com
Ina Garten's blondies only require a few ingredients. You probably already have most of them in your kitchen.Ingredients for Ina Garten's blondies. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider To make Garten's blondies at home, you'll need:1 pounds of semisweet chocolate chunks2 extra large eggs, at room temperature pound (2 sticks) of unsalted butter, at room temperature2 cups of all-purpose flour1 cups of chopped walnuts1 cup of light-brown sugar, lightly packed cup of granulated sugar2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract1 teaspoon of baking soda1 teaspoon of kosher saltSince I was making these blondies for a large group, I opted to skip the walnuts.I also didn't realize I had bought chocolate chips instead of chocolate chunks until I got home from the supermarket. I don't think it affected the results, so feel free to use either based on your preference or what you already have!First, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and greased my baking pan.The baking pan. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider Garten recommends using an 8-by-12-by-2-inch pan for this recipe. She also advises flouring the pan after greasing it, which I forgot to do whoops!I was still able to easily remove the baked blondies from the pan with a rubber spatula, so don't fret if you make the same mistake. Then, I began making the batter.I added butter, brown sugar, and sugar to a bowl for the batter. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider I added the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar to a big bowl, then used my handheld electric mixer on high speed to mix everything for three minutes.Garten says you'll know it's ready when the batter has turned light and fluffy.I turned my mixer to low and began adding the eggs one at a time, as well as the vanilla.Next, I added eggs to the batter. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider Garten advises scraping down the bowl as you add each egg, making sure to mix the batter well.In a separate bowl, I combined the dry ingredients.I mixed the dry ingredients. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider Per Garten's instructions, I sifted the flour, baking soda, and salt together. With the mixer still on low, I slowly added the dry ingredients to my batter.I added the dry ingredients to the batter. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider It was almost time to bake! Then, I folded in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula.I folded in the chocolate chips. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider You would also add the walnuts during this step.I spread the batter into my pan, making sure to smooth the top, then threw it into the oven.My blondies were ready to bake. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider Garten says to bake the blondies for 30 minutes exactly, using a toothpick to check that it's ready."Don't overbake!" she writes in the recipe description. "The toothpick may have melted chocolate on it, but it shouldn't have wet batter."I allowed the pan to cool completely before cutting my blondies into squares. The blondies looked delicious. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider The blondies had turned an enticing shade of golden brown, eliciting a big round of oohs and aahs when I presented them to my book club. The blondies were such a hit that one friend said she could have finished the entire pan.Everyone was a huge fan of Ina Garten's blondies. Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider The best word to describe these blondies is luscious. They were baked to perfection, with the chocolate melting into my mouth with each bite. Each moist square felt like eating an extra soft cookie, with just enough crispiness to keep the texture interesting."Three words: chunky, decadent, delicious," my friend Kayla said when I asked for a review.Garten's recipe was also straightforward and quick. Prep and cooking took 45 minutes in total. As the Barefoot Contessa herself would say, how easy is that?If you're looking for an impressive dessert that doesn't take a lot of time or money from your grocery budget, Garten's blondies are the perfect sweet treat.

  • The devastating impact of Trumps slashing foreign aid, in 3 charts
    www.vox.com
In about three short months, the Trump administration took a wrecking ball to foreign aid, threatening millions of lives and livelihoods around the world. After initially pausing all US foreign aid spending for 90 days, President Donald Trump handed over the reins to Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).The damage as DOGE went about clear-cutting the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was swift and extensive. Health clinics from Afghanistan to Burundi shuttered. Oxygen tanks, HIV and malaria medications, and other medical supplies amounting to at least $240 million remain stuck at ports or storage facilities around the world. Ebola prevention and response funding, which Musk claimed at the end of February was restored with no interruption during the 90-day freeze, is reportedly still not operational, according to several public health experts. Whether its aid for malnutrition, clean water, or outbreak response, even a handful of days can undo years of progress in the making. The Trump administration slashed at least $54 billion in foreign aid contracts. Around the world, around 60,000 aid workers lost their jobs, including some 2,000 USAID employees. Much of the world has lost its primary health support, and they wont get it back anytime soon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who took over as USAIDs interim leader in early February, announced Monday that 83 percent of the agencys programs had been canceled, while other restored projects have been shrunk considerably. The administration has not yet published a full list of all affected programs and projects. But former USAID workers and contractors are counting up canceled projects based on termination notices received by project staff. So far, many foundational global health efforts to treat malnutrition, prevent newborn and maternal mortality, or eliminate infectious diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, malnutrition, and polio have been impacted. Projects that aimed to improve infectious disease surveillance in foreign countries and to help prevent and contain future pandemics which could directly impact American health and security were also cut. These cuts and the USs recent withdrawal from the World Health Organization come on top of years of declines in global funding for health. The timing couldnt be possibly worse: Five years after the Covid pandemic began, the world now faces a surge of infectious disease outbreaks from dengue and malaria to Ebola and even a mysterious but deadly disease in Congo. The consequences that have been documented so far are severe and widesweeping, and yet they represent an incomplete tally of how billions of lives and livelihoods will be affected now or in the future. Here is everything we know about the US foreign aids global health effects around the world in three charts.Millions of patients strandedUntil very recently, USAID worked in 160 countries to spread democracy, reduce poverty, improve health, prevent and contain infectious disease outbreaks and provide food, clean water, and education to rural, underserved, refugee, and conflict-affected communities. In the decades since President John F. Kennedy established the agency in 1961, USAID became a household name in many countries. US foreign aid in those decades was a critical and oft-studied tool of global diplomacy, and one that until recently has had consistent bipartisan support. When it comes to aid, the US is irreplaceable. US donations to the United Nations in 2024 comprised 40 percent of all funds for humanitarian aid. The US donated almost half of all global food aid and made huge contributions to the World Health Organization for disease outbreaks and health emergencies. In all, the US spent more than $10 billion on health aid around the world in 2024. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa received the lions share of that aid, but developing countries everywhere have been affected by US funding cuts. Here are some key impacts that the US foreign funding freeze has had so far:An estimated 3.8 million women lost access to contraception globally.9 million people in Afghanistan nearly a quarter of the population will no longer receive US-funded healthcare services .Nearly 700,000 people in Burkina Faso and Mali have lost access to water, food, or health services. The World Food Programme, for which the US is the largest single donor, has shut down its operations in South Africa, where 27 million people are at risk of hunger as the country faces its worst drought in decades. In Nigeria, 25,000 extremely malnourished children will no longer be receiving food assistance by April.Perhaps the most important program targeted is the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR, which provides testing services and treatment to prevent and treat HIV, is credited with saving some 25 million lives. Although the program was not entirely cancelled, several major contracts were cut or shrunk down considerably. As a result, 20.6 million people, including almost 600,000 children, are no longer receiving HIV treatment that was previously funded by the US. Experts estimate that HIV burden could increase sixfold in the next four years. The Trump administrations dismantling of USAID and other government agencies has been messy. There have been a flurry of lawsuits still awaiting court decisions that allege the Trump administrations actions against USAID and its contractors are unlawful; however, on Monday, a federal judge declined to order the administration to restore canceled contracts. China is already moving into the void. Local media outlets from Nepal to Colombia have reported that representatives of the Chinese government have already come forward with offers to expand its assistance in areas from agriculture and disaster relief to health care and poverty alleviation. After floods devastated parts of Madagascar, Chinese officials mounted their first-ever humanitarian response in the country. Within days, Chinese aid tents lined the Ikopa River. How much China will aim to capitalize on this opportunity is not yet clear. And while the US foreign aid freeze and cuts have already had enormous repercussions, its full effects wont be felt in full for months or even years to come. USAID-funded agriculture programs, for instance, were not able to disperse seeds in time for planting, which means that farmers may miss an entire growing season, a spokesperson for a US nonprofit company that receives USAID contracts told me. This will worsen food insecurity and could plunge families into poverty. In other places, time-sensitive mosquito control activities like spraying insecticide to kill larva before they become mosquitos were missed, which will likely result in an explosion of dengue, malaria, and other mosquito-borne infectious diseases in a few months. A lack of US funding for polio eradication efforts will likely lead to an additional 200,000 polio cases a year. Some 10.6 million cases of tuberculosis and 2.2 million deaths will not be prevented in the void of US foreign aid funding. If youre an optimist, then you might hold on to a bit of hope that some of these programs might be restored, that the bipartisan consensus that once supported foreign aid can be rebuilt. But as the days go by, that seems increasingly unlikely. The hard reality is that the Trump administrations actions have left massive gaps in global aid that will ultimately be measured in lives lost.Youve read 1 article in the last monthHere at Vox, we're unwavering in our commitment to covering the issues that matter most to you threats to democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, the environment, and the rising polarization across this country. Our mission is to provide clear, accessible journalism that empowers you to stay informed and engaged in shaping our world. • Monster Hunter Wilds' post-launch roadmap and everything coming to Capcom's hit
    www.dailystar.co.uk
Monster Hunter Wilds has been out for a couple of weeks, and fans are already desperate to know what's coming here's everything we know so far about the game's post-launch content roadmapTech08:00, 16 Mar 2025Ready to tackle even more foes?(Image: Capcom)Monster Hunter Wilds launched at the tail-end of February, and it's likely to be one of the biggest games of the year. Our review said it's "everything fans couldve asked for in a sequel to Monster Hunter World", and the game hit huge player numbers on launch day. While Capcom works to iron out performance issues, fans are no doubt looking to the horizon for what's new. Monster Hunter games tend to roll out fresh challenges after launch to keep players returning, and Wilds will be no different in that regard.Article continues belowWith the developer already confirming some additional post-launch content, and with more to come, here's everything coming that we know of so far for Monster Hunter Wilds.Content cannot be displayed without consentThe additional updates for Monster Hunter Wilds will be split into two categories: Free Title Updates, and Event Quests. Two Free Title Updates are confirmed so far, with the first in April 2025 so not long to wait at all. Title Update 1 will introduce Mizutsune as a new monster, as well as a level of challenge which is apparently tougher than the 'Tempered' monsters which currently mark the toughest foes in Wilds. It'll also add a Gathering Hub for players to get together in between hunts, presumably similar to the one seen in Monster Hunter World.DLC 2 has less information for now, but we know it'll come this Summer and bring at least one new monster. We're still hoping for the carpet-bombing Bazelgeuse which caused utter carnage in Monster Hunter World's post-game.Prepare for tougher foes than Nerscylla(Image: Capcom)Both updates will include Event Quests, which will be limited-time events with valuable rewards. These range from Armor Spheres for upgrading gear to whole new pieces of headgear and Glowing Orbs.As for a potential expansion, it's hard to say. Monster Hunter World launched in 2018, with an expansion following around 18 months later. Iceborne upped the difficulty and added new Monsters and regions.2021's Monster Hunter Rise, on the other hand, debuted in 2021 (at least on Switch), before Sunbreak launched a year later. Could we get the same for Wilds? A 2026 expansion could certainly increase the difficulty, but Capcom hasn't announced anything just yet.Article continues belowMonster Hunter Wilds is Capcom's fast-selling game in the company's history, selling more than 8 million copies in the first three days since launch. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more optional quests to complete before Mizutsune gets here...For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • Battlefield was always a fan made game and EA has never understood it Readers Feature
    metro.co.uk
Battlefield 6 does look good at this point (EA)A reader struggles to be optimistic about Battlefield 6 and thinks EA has still not given up trying to turn the series into Call Of Duty.Ive been looking at all the leaked gameplay videos for Battlefield 6 this week with a mix of emotions. On the one hand they do look good but on the other hand Ive been here before. Being a Battlefield fan must be like being a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, where you get excited about a new game when its first shown, you get worried when you learn more, and then youre completely disappointed when it finally comes out. Before not learning your lesson and getting hyped for the next game anyway. The Sonic Cycle and the Battlefield Cycle are basically the same.Believe it or not, there was a time when Battlefield 2042 looked really good and I thought itd turn out well. Then the game came out and it was just a janky mess of random ideas shoved together with no care or thought. I think that was EA trying to get the game back to its mod roots, but it was so half-assed even they admitted it had been a failure within just weeks.Younger gamers probably dont think of Battlefield as being much of a fan game, or something that uses mods, but thats absolutely how it started. I still remember playing Desert Combat on my old PC, which was my whole introduction to fan mods, online gaming, and how different PC gaming can be to anything on consoles.Battlefield creator DICE were all about the community and using fan creations in the early days. Nowadays publishers use the word community when all they mean is people subscribed to their Twitter channel or something else easily controllable. But back in the day, when it was just Battlefield 1942, fans were stretching and twisting the game into whatever they wanted and DICE were right there egging them on.Then EA bought DICE and things have slowly been getting worse ever since. It wasnt obvious at first because Battlefield 2 and 3 were good, Bad Company too. There was less mods and it all felt more corporate but they still felt close enough to the original idea of what Battlefield 1942 was: a customisable war simulator that could do just about anything. It was Battlefield 3 that started to change things though and with 4 it became a lot more obvious what EA were doing: they were trying to change it into Call Of Duty. They realised they were two different games, and they knew the size and scale of Battlefield was a selling point, but they still wanted to bring Battlefield closer in style to Activisions games because, well Activisions games made more money.Of course, it didnt work. Trying to turn Battlefield into Call Of Duty is trying to pretend a steak and a hamburger are the same thing. Theyre similar, of course, and both are good in their own right, but you cant turn one into the other no matter how hard you try.EA didnt give up though. Like any publisher when they get an idea in their head (just think live service games) they just keep doing it again and again until either the fashion trend theyre trying to follow stops or they go under. Call Of Duty is still super successful, so I have no doubt that EAs ultimate goal is still to replace it and part of the plan for doing that is by making Battlefield more like it.That might not seem the angle at the moment but, like I said, Ive seen all this before. The original formula for Battlefield will never be as successful as Call Of Duty because its too complicated and doesnt work as well on consoles, so EA has to make it more like Call Of Duty to have a chance to succeed.I believe well see that as more of the game is revealed and when it comes out we understand exactly what it is. I mean, theyve got a whole separate developer working on the story campaign and what Battlefield fan has ever asked for that?More TrendingEA just dont get Battlefield. All they know is that its a military game thats popular and that if they just change it enough it can be super popular and upend Call Of Duty. That hasnt happened any time in the last two decades and I dont think it ever will. Sadly, I think it will take EA completely ruining the Battlefield name before they give up.By reader Lambda Officially, almost nothing has been revealed about the new game yet (EA)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. • Scientists Discover Troves of New Species at the Oceans Deepest Depths
    gizmodo.com
Earths hadal zone includes marine regions 19,700 to 36,000 feet (6,000 to 11,000 meters) below sea level. The reference to the Greek god of the underworld, Hades, is not coincidentalthese are the deepest regions of our oceans, and one of the least explored areas on Earth. New research sheds light on this dramatic environment and the creatures that call it home despite the extreme conditions. Researchers used a cutting-edge Chinese submersible called Fendouzhe to plunge over 35,700 feet (10,900 m) below sea level and collect hundreds of biological samples from the hadal zone in the Yap Trench, the Philippine Basin, and the Mariana Trenchthe deepest ocean trench on Earth. Of the more than 7,000 microbial species researchers documented in the samples, over 89% were previously unknown. Their study, published March 6 in the journal Cell, highlights surprising diversity in one of our planets most extreme environments. Extraordinarily high novelty, diversity, and heterogeneity were observed in the hadal microbiome, especially among prokaryotes and viruses, which are impacted by both the broader context of extreme environmental conditions as well as the delicate topography in the hadal zone, the researchers wrote in the study. Their work is part of the Mariana Trench Environment and Ecology Research (MEER) project, which they claim provides the first systematic view of the ecosystem in the hadal zone. The hadal zone features extreme pressure, near-freezing temperatures, low nutrient levels, and almost complete darkness. Simply put, extraordinary environmental challenges to life, according to the researchers. Nevertheless, the hadal samples revealed the presence of 7,564 microbial species, of which 89.4% were documented for the first time. The remarkable diversity of the samples was also reflected in the microbes genetics, which revealed a broad range of survival strategies. The paper is one of a trio of MEER studies on hadal zone ecosystems published on the same day. One of the other studies details how amphipods (small shrimp-like creatures) may thrive in the extreme environments of the hadal zone thanks to a symbiotic relationship with bacteria. The other suggests that fish living deeper than 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) below sea level all have a genetic mutation that helps them mitigate the impact of the cold, pressure, and lack of sunlight. This last study also estimates when certain marine creatures first descended to such depths. For example, the researchers propose that eels colonized the deep seas around 100 million years ago, which allowed them to survive the meteorite impact that almost wiped out the dinosaurs and decimated marine creatures inhabiting shallower waters. Altogether, the three studies demonstrate the existence of similar adaptive mechanisms between microorganisms and larger creatures living in the hadal zone. These findings suggest the existence of convergent adaptation strategies to hadal environments that transcend species boundaries and biological domains, the researchers wrote in a commentary on the trio of studies. In other words, the hadal zones extreme environment likely drove unrelated species to develop similar traits. In addition to the microbes, amphipods, and fish, however, the researchers also encountered human litter: plastic bags, soda cans, beer bottles, and even a laundry basket, according to Science. This was deeply shocking to us, Weishu Zhao, an extremophile microbiologist at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a co-author of the microbial study, told Science. While she and her colleagues noted that deep-sea microbes seem capable of processing some human contaminants, that seems like a small consolation in the face of humanitys footprint reaching the deepest regions of our oceans. Ultimately, the study provides rare insight into the exceptional diversity of a region once believed to be lifelessproving that life really does always find a way.
