• Users Cheer as Microsoft Accidentally Removes Hated AI Feature From Windows 11
    futurism.com
Microsoft has "unintentionally uninstalled" its Copilot AI assistant app on some devices running its latest operating system Windows 11 and users, strikingly, are rejoicing the temporary respite from the despised feature."Were aware of an issue with the Microsoft Copilot app affecting some devices," admitted in Windows support documentation posted last week, as spotted by The Verge.Microsoft said that it's working to address the issue, and reminded users that they can reinstall the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store and pin it to their taskbar in the meantime. But who actually wants to do that is unclear. A quick web search reveals countless forum threads of furious Windows users complaining that Copilot was installed on their system without their consent.Earlier this month, Microsoft rolled out a new UI for its Copilot app to Windows, forcing the AI chatbot, which is based on OpenAI's large language models, on many who don't want anything to do with it."'Microsoft accidentally fixes Windows 11,'" one Reddit user joked in response to the inadvertent removal."Sounds like an upgrade to me," quipped another. In its writeup, PC Gamer described Microsoft's screw-up as a "rather pleasing Windows 11 update bug," celebrating the company for being "jolly nice."The incident shows yet again that many users simply aren't interested in AI chatbots and especially when they're not actively opting in. For years now, tech companies have tried to shoehorn the tech into their offerings, despite a lukewarm reception.AI chatbots still suffer from the same glaring shortcomings as they did when OpenAI's pioneering ChatGPT exploded onto the scene in late 2022. For one, they hallucinate facts with abandon, greatly undermining their usefulness as a research assistant. And they still have only a limited number of use cases, which makes them useful for only a small subset of users. In short, it shouldn't really come as a surprise that Microsoft including Copilot in its latest Windows update isn't turning out to be super popular. But then again, any significant changes to an operating system that's been around since the mid-1980s is bound to draw scrutiny and anger.Microsoft is also rumored to be working on its own in-house AI reasoning models in an apparent effort to lessen its dependence on partner OpenAI. In other words, Windows users should expect to have even more AI features shoved down their throats in months and years to come. The tech giant will be hosting an April 4 event to celebrate its 50th anniversary, which is expected to be centered around Copilot so we'll likely hear more about future updates then.Share This Article

  • Researcher "Threatened to Kill" Colleagues Trapped in Antarctic Base
    futurism.com
Things seem to be going nightmarishly bad at an isolated scientific base in Antarctica, where a researcher has been accused of assaulting and threatening to murder colleagues. As England'sThe Times reports, an unnamed climate researcher at the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE IV), a scientific base on Norway's Queen Maud Land region of the frozen continent, allegedly threatened the life of one of his colleagues, physically attacking one coworker and sexually assaulted another. In a pleading message shared with South Africa'sSunday Times, one of the man's coworkers begged their superiors for rescue. According to that letter, the researcher's behavior "has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing" after he "physically assaulted" and "threatened to kill" at least one of the unnamed team members with whom he'll be stranded on the base for at least ten more months."His [behavior] has become increasingly egregious, and I am experiencing significant difficulty in feeling secure in his presence," the letter reads. "It is imperative that immediate action is taken to ensure my safety and the safety of all employees."According to that same letter the name of whose author, as with the subject, was withheld to protect their privacy the alleged attacker has created "an environment of fear and intimidation.""I remain deeply concerned about my own safety," the author wrote, "constantly wondering if I might become the next victim."As moving as that plea is, it remains unclear when or even if a rescue mission will be deployed to SANAE IV, which is located on the top of a remote cliff and takes nearly two weeks to access. On average, the temperature stands at nearly 10 degrees Fahrenheit at the base, and the winds surrounding it can shoot up to 135 miles per hour, the report notes which makes getting there all but impossible. In a statement to the Times, South African environment minister Dion George said that he plans to speak to the SANAE IV team personally "to assess for [himself]" what's going on.According to George, a "verbal altercation between the team leader and this person" the alleged attacker, seemingly broke out, and that individual did eventually assault the team lead."You can imagine what its like, it is close quarters and people do get cabin fever," he said. "It can be very disorientating."The minister added that an initial investigation into the matter found that the person who did the assault did not have "dangerous intentions," whatever that means. Should they need help, however, George said that his counterparts in Norway and Germany have been contacted "in the event that we need to do an urgent intervention."Be that as it may, these accusations seem incredibly serious and the minister in charge of the SANAE IV team's safety doesn't seem to be handling it with the proper gravity.More on research gone wrong: Scientist Who Gene-Hacked Human Babies Says Ethics Are "Holding Back" Scientific ProgressShare This Article

  • Fiji Iguanas Crossed the Ocean from the Americas Millions of Years Ago
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 17, 20252 min readHow Iguanas Got from North America to Fiji Millions of Years AgoA genetic analysis reveals that Fijis iguanas are most closely related to lizards living in North Americas deserts. How is this possible?By Jack Tamisiea edited by Andrea ThompsonA Brachylophus bulabula, commonly known as the central Fijian banded iguana on Ovalau Island, Fiji. Robert Fisher, USGSWith their bright green scales and powder blue and white splotches, Fijian iguanas look right at home on the lush, tropical islands of Fiji, for which they are named. But scientists have long puzzled over how these bulky lizards first reached this remote spot in the South Pacific.A new analysis of iguana genetics, published on Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, supports the hypothesis that these imposing reptiles actually traveled all the way from southwestern North Americacovering more than 5,000 miles in one of natures greatest known oceanic odysseys.Iguanas have colonized islands throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Galpagos archipelago. But none of those journeys can compare to their trip to Fiji, an isolated island chain more than 1,600 miles east of Australia. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. Some had speculated that the lizards reached the islands via land bridges as the southern supercontinent, Gondwana, splintered. Others had posited that the iguanas floated on rafts of tree branches or other debris from South America, a voyage that would take several months. To learn more in the new study, the researchers compared the genomes of one of the four iguana species in the genus Brachylophus that are found on Fiji and Tonga with those of several species found in the Americas. Genetic data revealed that the Fijian reptiles were most closely related to iguanas in the genus Dipsosaurus, which are native to the deserts of southwestern North Americamore than 5,000 miles distant from Fiji.Desert Iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis).Natural History Archive/Alamy Stock PhotoThe close relationship between Fijian iguanas (some of which are endangered) and desert iguanas surprised biologist Christina De Jess Villanueva, a member of the iguana specialist group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, who was not involved in the new study. A common ancestor between the green iguana [Iguana iguana] and the Galpagos marine iguana [Amblyrhynchus cristatus] would have been my first guess as the predecessor for the Fijian iguanas, she says. But nature and evolution keep finding ways to surprise us.According to the studys researchers, the Fijian iguanas evolutionarily diverged from their North American kin between 34 million and 31 million years ago, long after Gondwana broke up, making the rafting hypothesis most likely. The vast stretch of open ocean between North America and Fiji could only have been crossed by floating on mats of vegetation that were swept out to sea. Such a voyage would be the longest oceanic dispersal by any terrestrial vertebrate known to science.Study co-author Simon Scarpetta, an evolutionary biologist at the University of San Francisco, says many iguanas are resistant to heat and starvation because of their slow metabolism and often get shunted between islands on clumps of vegetation. If you had to think of a vertebrate group that could survive a rafting event across thousands of kilometers of open ocean, he says, iguanas are a great choice.

  • How to Create the Perfect Sleep Environment (2025), Expert Tips
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Sleepmaxxinga wellness trend to optimize the quantity and quality of your sleepis a perfectly good excuse to makeover your bedroom. Knowing how to create the perfect sleep environment will have an outsize effect on your general wellbeing as well. The bedroom should be a personal sanctuary, a place where one can truly unwind and recharge, says interior designer Stephanie Martin. Every decor choice you make, whether its the lighting, the window treatments, or the bed itself, impacts how well you rest throughout the night. The idea of sleep hygieneadjusting your behaviors and environment for more Zsis not novel. In fact, it was coined by an Italian physiologist in the 1860s and was revived in the 1970s. Experts, including clinical psychologist and clinical sleep specialist Michael Breus, Ph.D., evaluate the surroundings to optimize your inner clock. I think of four of the five senses and how each one has an effect on sleep, says the author of The Power of When.Translating this into your bedroom design is easy, as long as you focus on texture, temperature, and the overall feel of the space. Here are eight ways to upgrade your bedroom for the best nights sleepand make it look good in the process.Spring for blackout curtainsMelatonin, the sleep hormone, is called the Vampire Hormone, since it only comes out in darkness, says Breus. So whatever a person can do to make their bedroom dark will help with sleep. Replace any flimsy window treatments with elegant heavy drapes to help you rest easy. For undisturbed slumber, Davina Ogilvie, founder of Wovn Home, recommends blackout-lined drapery in lieu of a blind or any other window treatment. Gaps between the edges of a blind and window opening are inevitable, and this is where light can seep through, she explains. With full length drapery on the other hand, fabric covers the entire window and more, making it incredibly effective for light blocking. Floor-to-ceiling drapery will work best for light blocking, and creates a sense of heightened coziness akin to a luxury hotel room.Martin also likes a combination of gauzy sheer underdrapes to filter sunlight and maintain privacy, paired with blackout overdrapes that ensure complete darkness when it's time to sleep. This layering of fabric not only adds a tactile richness to the space but also enhances its acoustic properties, creating a cocoon-like atmosphere that feels both quiet and cozy, she says.Pottery Barn Velvet Twill Blackout CurtainWest Elm European Flax Linen Blackout CurtainKick electronics out of the roomA television and a tangle of cords by your bed arent doing your decoror your sleepany good. Studies have shown that viewing electronics before bed, whether its watching TV or checking email, has a detrimental effect on sleep. Research in the journal Sleep Science, explains that the disruption comes from the blue light suppresses melatonin, heightened emotions as a result of content that can leave you anxious or depressed, and plain scrolling on social media, for instance, instead of actually sleeping. Keep these devices out of the bedroom, replacing them with attractive objets and an old-school alarm clock.Schoolhouse Farbe Alarm ClockArne Jacobsen City Hall Analog Tabletop ClockLayer the lightingLighting has the power to influence our mood and sleep patterns. To create the ultimate sleep environment, Martin emphasizes the importance of layering light. Think of it as orchestrating a symphony for your senses, " she notes. We start with overhead fixtures that provide a warm, inviting glow, complemented by bedside lamps and reading lights that can be adjusted for different activities, all on separate switches and dimmers. This flexibility allows you to establish a bright, energizing space in the morning that gradually transitions to a soft, soothing glow in the evening, setting the perfect mood for restful slumber.
