• Build Sustainable Data Centers in the Age of GenAI

Simon Ninan, Senior Vice President of Business Strategy, Hitachi VantaraMarch 17, 20254 Min ReadCagkan Sayin via Alamy StockGenerative AI has incredible potential to improve productivity and drive innovation across domains and sectors. But the challenge to enterprises is twofold as cost and carbon footprint complicate the path forward.GenAI models require growing volumes of data and storage, and the graphics processing units (GPUs) on which GenAI relies to move and process data require an enormous amount of energy to run. The complexities of price and power drain that result from the massive amounts of data and GPUs are a huge hurdle for enterprises seeking to create a greener, more sustainable future. This has important implications for hyperscalers and other enterprises that operate data centers, as well as for businesses, communities, and all living things across the planet.Despite barriers to early adoption, GenAI is here to stay. Software developers, support staff, and consumers are already using GenAI, which will only surge with greater applications and adoption, thus becoming as common as mobile devices. That said, sustainable data centers will be critical for GenAI expansion and the world.I predict that sustainable data centers will become mandatory in the next five years. Here are five steps to help your enterprise build a sustainable data center:Related:1. Address data managementData is the lifeblood of GenAI applications, so its important for enterprises to have data management systems and strategies that provide access to the right data at the right time.Application data may reside on premises, in the cloud or the edge. Ensure that your data management strategy enables you to access data from whichever platform suits your needs at the optimal cost and in a secure manner. This will contain costs, limit your risk, and help you differentiate your business. To address the rapidly growing data volume of GenAI, you should also explore compression technology, which can store the same data, with 60% less footprint, decreasing your need for power and lowering your carbon emissions.Distributed, dark data is another challenge. With so much data in so many places, you may not know where all of your data resides. Address that by using data cataloging, compliance, ediscovery and governance solutions to understand what data you have, where it sits, and how to integrate data to reduce waste and use your data to drive business results.Data governance and compliance can be tricky given the rapidly intensifying complexity. Many organizations lack the skills, industry knowledge and expertise to tackle this alone. Engage with a partner with deep industry knowledge that has baked that knowledge into their tools.Related:2. Explore your data storeOptimal data management will help you strike the right balance between the data storage and processing you need to support your GenAI applications and your sustainability commitments.Dont store multiple copies of data. Only hang on to the data that your business really needs.Keep the most important information in hot storage. Put the data for which you dont have an immediate need in cold storage, which will reduce your costs and lower your carbon footprint.Select a data storage solution that is highly engineered for performance and sustainability. Validate the solution by reviewing what independent third parties say about its sustainability.3. Process data where it livesData movement consumes time and power, so avoid unnecessarily moving data.Ensure you have the technology to process data close to the source and use metadata management to access what you need and transport only the data you need to move.4. Implement liquid cooling systemsGenAI attracted 100 million users in less than two months after launch, and an Enterprise Strategy Group study sponsored by Hitachi Vantara indicates that 97% of enterprises see GenAI as a top five priority. But the massive GPU infrastructure needed to power GenAI applications generates a lot of heat in data centers.Related:Over the years, companies have tried to cool equipment by doing everything from submerging data centers in the ocean to locating data facilities in remote parts of the world like Iceland. However, you dont need to dive deep or travel far to cool your data center. Instead, you can use liquid cooling, which can.5. Take a holistic approachRapidly growing data, GPU requirements and data centers -- and the complexity, risk and environmental impacts they entail -- make sustainability more important than ever. The green data center of the future will be simple, smart, secure, self-healing, scalable and sustainable. It calls for a holistic approach that addresses server, software and storage efficiency, employs the right mix of sustainable energy sources, and uncovers opportunities to use innovations and eco-friendly solutions to make the best use of data and limit carbon footprint. When companies and data centers are more sustainable, everybody benefits. The world becomes a better place, customers enjoy better outcomes and businesses grow stronger.About the AuthorSimon NinanSenior Vice President of Business Strategy, Hitachi VantaraSimon Ninan is senior vice president of business strategy, responsible for developing and driving aligned execution of Hitachi Vantaras business strategy for the short and long term, with the goal of maximizing customer and stakeholder value, while driving growth, innovation and market leadership.Simon holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Information Science and an MBA in Strategy and International Business. www.newscientist.com
Becki GillTwo decades ago, Jaap de Roode made a discovery that changed his scientific career. While researching the ecology and evolution of parasites and their hosts, he came across something truly surprising: the monarch butterflies he was studying seemed to be exploiting the medicinal properties of plants to treat themselves and their offspring.Back then, the notion that an insect might be capable of self-medicating seemed far-fetched. Now, de Roode is a world expert in the burgeoning field of animal medication, with a lab of his own at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He spoke to New Scientist about his work, his new book, Doctors by Nature: How ants, apes and other animals heal themselves, and his belief that animals possess medicinal knowledge that we can use to improve our own health. The self-medicating behaviour of chimps and woolly bear caterpillars (below) have also been studiedMichael A HuffmanGraham Lawton: How did this unlikely area of research get going?Jaap de Roode: It started during work in Tanzania in the 1980s with a chance observation. Michael Huffman of Kyoto University was working with Mohamedi Seifu Kalunde, a national parks ranger, to look at the role of elderly chimpanzees in society. While tracking one called Chausiku, they noticed that she was withdrawn, she was taking naps during the day and she had diarrhoea. They saw her go to a plant called Vernonia, also known as bitter leaf. She stripped off the bark and started sucking the pith. This is not normally part of their diet. Seifu, who was also a traditional healer, told Huffman that he uses it as a

FanDuel is launching a new show about gambling addiction, called "The Comeback with Craig Carton."The show will feature guests who will talk about their struggles with sports betting.A FanDuel exec said the strategy makes "perfect sense" for the gambling brand.FanDuel, a major US gambling operator, is launching a new show about the problems with gambling. The monthly show, called "The Comeback with Craig Carton," features people who have openly battled gambling addiction and includes tools and resources for help. Its first episode speaks with former NBA player Randy Livingston and his wife about his struggles with gambling. The series airs on FanDuel's YouTube channel and streaming network, FanDuel TV Extra.Legal sports betting has faced media criticism and regulatory pushback in the US amid high-profile gambling scandals. Some lawmakers are pushing for legislation such as the SAFE Bet Act, which targets sports betting-related "public health issues" with new regulations around practices like advertising. The new series shows FanDuel is trying to own the narrative around gambling addiction and responsible gambling.Cory Fox, the senior vice president of public policy and sustainability, told Business Insider the show fits perfectly into its "multipronged approach to responsible gambling."FanDuel, for example, offers a responsible gambling landing page with tools and resources for users who seek help. The company is also trying to create a culture of responsible gaming. FanDuel and other major gambling operators launched last year the Responsible Online Gambling Association, as well.Carton, the show's host, told BI there is a stigma surrounding gambling addiction that he hopes the show can shed and encourage more people to seek help. He is a recovering gambling addict turned advocate who started working with FanDuel in 2021 to promote responsible gambling.Carton said he wants to use FanDuel's reach to "help people, warn people, and show people the signs of problem gambling."Why would a gambling brand have a show about the bad parts of gambling? It seems ironic that one of the largest gambling platforms in the US is centering a show around the harmful parts of its industry.Fox said the reality is that some of FanDuel's customers may experience gambling addiction, so the company wants them to see what it looks like."I think actually doing it on a gambling network makes a lot of sense," he said.Host Carton had a radio show about responsible gambling before partnering with FanDuel."The purpose of this show is to let people see the depth that irresponsible, compulsive gamblers go to so that they can continue to wager the things that they risk," said Carton. "And then on the flip side, a lot of the people that we're going to talk to have also successfully navigated recovery."If you or someone you know has a gambling addiction, call the National Council on Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-522-4700), which provides resources and referrals for all 50 states, Canada, and the US Virgin Islands. Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in December 2023.He was promptly dropped from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In April 2024, Majors was sentenced to attend a 52-week domestic violence program in lieu of jail.Jonathan Majors' once-promising acting career has been marred by controversies.Majors is known for his Emmy-nominated role as Atticus Freeman in "Lovecraft Country," Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and Damian Anderson in "Creed III." But in recent years, the focus has instead been on his personal life and domestic assault case involving his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.Majors was charged with assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and harassment in March 2023. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. In December of that year, he was found guilty of recklessly assaulting and injuring Jabbari and harassing her. He was acquitted of assault with intent to cause injury.Majors got a no-jail sentence in April 2024 and is now rehabilitating his Hollywood image, starting with his latest film, "Magazine Dreams."Here's a timeline of Majors' case and controversial moments.March 25, 2023: Majors is arrested in connection with a 'domestic dispute' in New York City Jonathan Majors at the world premiere of Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in February 2023. Valerine Macon/AFP via Getty Images Majors' legal woes began on the morning of March 25.In a statement provided to Business Insider, the NYPD said police responded to a 911 call around 11:14 a.m. in a Manhattan apartment. A "preliminary investigation" found that the actor and a woman, later identified as Majors' ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari, were involved in a "domestic dispute."Majors was arrested on the scene and held on suspicion of strangulation, assault, and harassment after Jabbari told police that she was assaulted, the NYPD told Business Insider.Police said the woman sustained "minor injuries to her head and neck" and was taken to a local hospital.According to reports filed with the New York Criminal Court seen by BI, Majors was charged with assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and harassment. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.Jabbari was granted a temporary order of protection and Majors was released on his own recognizance.Majors' criminal defense lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, told BI in a statement that Majors was "the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows." She said she believed the charges would be "dropped imminently."March 26: Within days, Majors' career begins feeling the fallout Majors at the Academy Awards in March 2023. Robyn Beck/Getty Images The case quickly began affecting Majors' career.People magazine reported that the US Army pulled two recruitment campaign videos that starred Majors. The public affairs chief for the Army Enterprise Marketing Office, Laura DeFrancisco, told the outlet that though Majors is considered innocent until proven guilty, "prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete."On April 18, Deadline reported Majors had been dropped by his talent manager Entertainment 360, and his PR firm, The Lede Company. That same day, Deadline also reported that Majors had been dropped from "The Man in My Basement"and an ad campaign for the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball team and takenout of the running for an Otis Redding biopic he was interested in.March 30: Majors' team denies the assault and shares text messages purported to be from the victim Jonathan Majors. Rich Fury/VF22/Getty Images for Vanity Fair Later that week, Chaudhry told People in a statement that Majors deniedassaulting Jabbari. She also shared text messages with multiple media outlets she purported were from Jabbari, however, the messages have not been independently verified.Chaudry said that on the day of the assault, "the woman sent text messages to Mr. Majors admitting that she was the one who used physical force against him. She also disavowed any allegations that he had done anything to her and confirmed that Mr. Majors called 911 because of her mental condition.""I reiterated this was not an attack and they do not have my blessing on any charges being placed. I read the paper they gave me about strangulation and I said point blank this did not occur and should be removed immediately," the messages read in part.May 9: Majors' lawyer calls the case a 'witch hunt' during the first hearing Majors at Manhattan Criminal Court. Alan Chin/Insider During the first hearing on May 9, Business Insider's Laura Italiano reported that Jabbari said Majors pulled her middle finger, "causing bruising, swelling, and substantial pain." She also accused Majors of grabbing her "right arm, [placed] it behind my body, and use his hands to twist my right forearm and right middle finger, causing substantial pain to my right forearm and right middle finger."Prosecutors also alleged Majors hit the victim with his hand on her right ear and caused a cut, and that he pushed her into a car using both of his hands, causing her to fall backward.Majors, through his lawyer Chaudhry, maintained his innocence."We have provided the District Attorney with irrefutable evidence that the woman is lying, including video proof showing nothing happened, especially not where she claimed," Chaudry said in front of the court, Deadline reported. She went on to call the case a "witch hunt."June 20: Majors' lawyer says her client's arrest is 'racist' Majors leaving Manhattan Criminal Court with actor and girlfriend Meagan Good. Alan Chin/Business Insider Majors was joined at Manhattan Criminal Court by his girlfriend, actor Meagan Good.During Majors' second hearing, Chaudhry spoke to BI's Italiano and allowed Italiano to review police footage from the night of the assault.Chaudhry said the footage showed the officers questioning among themselves how Majors could afford to live in a luxe penthouse, as they didn't realize he was a famous actor.Chaudhry told BI that all six of the responding officers were white and said that influenced how the evening's events went down."It is heartbreaking that in 2023, a Black man should still be afraid to dial 911, even to save a life," she said."The sad truth of this story is that if you are Black man and there is a white woman who needs medical help, you should think twice about calling 911 because chances are, you will be blamed and arrested.""And everyonedespite proof of the Black man's innocencewill assume he did it," she said. "And no one despite proof of the white woman's crimes will prosecute her."The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment from BI at the time. June 27: Majors files a cross-complaint against ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari Majors in February 2023. Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic On June 27, BI's Italiano reportedthat Majors filed an NYPD domestic violence complaint against Jabbari a day after his second hearing.Per a domestic incident report and affidavit obtained by BI, Majors said a "drunk and hysterical" Jabbari scratched, slapped, and grabbed at his face, causing pain and bleeding. In the incident report, Majors also accused his ex-girlfriend of running up his credit card without his authorization, returning to her home in London with his iPhone, and "a Rolex vintage watch and other luxury items that cost $6,000 - $7,000."BI reported a day later that the NYPD had issued a probable cause "investigation card" for Jabbari, authorizing them to arrest Jabbari on suspicion of third-degree assault if she returned to the US.June 29: Rolling Stone reports former coworkers of Majors alleged the actor became violent Jonathan Majors. Jeff Kravitz / Contributor / Getty Images On June 29, Rolling Stone released the results of a monthslong investigation where anonymous sources alleged Majors abused two women he dated, was violent during his time at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University, and had outbursts on the set of his film "Magazine Dreams."In a statement to Rolling Stone, Majors' attorney, Dustin A. Pusch, denied the allegations.Majors' team also sent six character witness statements in support of the actor to Rolling Stone from women he'd dated or known. However, four of the women told the publication that they never gave permission to Majors' attorneys to release those statements. One of the four women told Rolling Stone that the statement attributed to her was pre-written and inaccurate.Rolling Stone said Haley Carter, who dated Majors from age 13 to 18, was the only one to consent to the statement going public."After 20 years of knowing him, I can tell you who Jonathan is. He did not do these things," the statement said.Majors' attorneys defended the character witness statements to BI's Natalie Musumeci."Rolling Stone has misrepresented the circumstances under which it was provided written statements from individuals who know Jonathan Majors," the attorneys said in a statement. "The statements were provided to Rolling Stone off the record and not for publication expressly to protect the privacy of the individuals and to make sure they could decide for themselves whether and how to comment, and Rolling Stone was encouraged to reach out to the individuals directly for that purpose."The attorneys added: "The statements were not manufactured, and there was plainly no intention to misrepresent the opinions of these individuals, each of whom Mr. Majors deeply respects."October 2: A 'Loki' executive producer said the production was not asked to change the season after Majors' assault case Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains in "Loki" season one. Marvel Studios/Disney+ The week of the "Loki" season 2 release, Varietypublished an interview with the show's executive producer Kevin Wright.During the interview, they asked the producer if Majors' arrest resulted in any changes to the show.Wright replied: "No. This is maybe not maybe this is the first Marvel series to never have any additional photography. The story that is on screen is the story we set out to make. We went out there with a very specific idea of what we wanted this to be, and we found a way to tell it in that production period. It's very much what's on screen on Disney+."When asked whether there were any discussions about making changes due to Majors' assault case, Wright added: "No. And that mainly came from I know as much as you do at the moment. It felt hasty to do anything without knowing how all of this plays out."October 25: Jabbari is arrested and released the following day Grace Jabbari after turning herself in to the NYPD on his cross-complaint against her. Alan Chin/Insider Jabbari turned herself in to the New York City Police and was charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief following Majors' cross-complaint months earlier."It's sad that she had to go through this because she is the victim in this case and she's the survivor," Jabbari's lawyer, Ross Kramer, said outside the NYC police station.Manhattan prosecutors dropped all charges the following day, saying the case against Jabbari "lacks prosecutorial merit."The same day, Majors' motion to dismiss the case was rejected.October 27: Majors' movie 'Magazine Dreams' is removed from Disney's 2023 release schedule Jonathan Majors in "Magazine Dreams." Courtesy Searchlight Pictures The Searchlight Pictures film, which Majors received praise for at 2023's Sundance Film Festival, was quietly removed from an updated theatrical calendar sent to BI by Walt Disney Studios. The movie was set for a December 8, 2023 release.December 6: Jabbari testifies that Majors was worried his career would be ruined if the public learned of his past behavior Majors at Manhattan Criminal Court. Alan Chin/Insider Majors' domestic violence trial began on November 29 and testimony was given for two weeks.Jabbari told the jury that Majors was angry she told his manager about past behavior, accusing the "Creed III" star of having a temper during their two-year relationship. She also testified that Majors threatened suicide. She said Majors told her, "because of the conversation that I had had that he was going to kill himself. That he was a monster."December 8: Texts between Majors and Jabbari urged her not to seek medical attention Jonathan Majors and Grace Jabbari. AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews; AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews Texts shown in court revealed that Majors encouraged Jabbari not to see a doctor for any injuries because it would risk an investigation."It's just fake," Majors texted Jabbari. "And you have, I fear, no perspective of what could happen if you go to the hospital. They will ask you questions and, as I don't think you can actually protect us, it could lead to an investigation, even if you do lie and they suspect something."In response, Jabbari texted she would cover for Majors."I will tell the doctor that I bumped my head," a text message read to the jury. "If I go I'm going to give it one more day. But I can't sleep and I need some stronger painkillers. Why would I tell them what really happened when it's clear I want to be with you."December 12: A recording of Majors' 911 call after finding Jabbari unconscious in March is released Majors in December 2023. Marvel Studios A Marvel company spokesperson confirmed to BI that Marvel is not moving forward with Majors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next "Avengers" movie, "Avengers: Doomsday," is set for release in 2026 and will instead pivot to the comic book villain Dr. Doom, played by returning MCU star Robert Downey Jr.Despite being axed from the MCU, Majors later said he was optimistic about finding work in showbusiness again."Yeah, I do. I pray I do," Majors told ABC News in January 2024 in his first interview since he was found guilty of assault and harassment. "But it's God's plan and God's timing."April 8, 2024: Majors gets a no-jail sentenceMajors was joined at the sentencing hearing by Good, who sat behind him in the courtroom audience. BI reported that Good dabbed at her eyes with her fingers when Judge Michael Gaffey of New York City Criminal Court said he wouldn't be sending Majors to jail.Instead, Majors was sentenced to attend a 52-week in-person domestic violence program. The judge said he took into account the wishes of prosecutors and Majors' lack of a criminal record in sentencing the star to attend the "batterers intervention" program. If he fails to attend the program and continue therapy, Majors, a Los Angeles resident, faces up to a year in a New York jail. The judge also ordered a permanent order of protection barring Majors from contact with Jabbari.June 21: Majors references his legal controversies while accepting an award at the 2024 Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards Jonathan Majors at Hollywood Unlocked's Impact Awards on June 21, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California. "As a Black man in the criminal justice system, I felt anger. I felt sadness, hurt, surprise.""We live in a world where men, Black men in particular, are propped up as either superheroes or super villains," the actor added. "But I've come to realize, me personally, I ain't none of that. I'm imperfect. I have shortcomings, I acknowledge them. I love my craft."Majors gave a shout-out to Good during his speech, and concluded by vowing to "be there for others and to help them win and if their trials come."November 17: Majors and Meagan Good announce their engagement Majors and Meagan Good on March 12, 2025, in Hollywood, California. Briarcliff Entertainment Majors plays an aspiring bodybuilder named Killian Maddox in "Magazine Dreams," which is distributed through Briarcliff Entertainment and releases in theaters on March 21.Ahead of the film's release, The Hollywood Reporter published a feature on Majors in which the actor spoke about his trial and the aftermath. Majors said that his plan moving forward is to "have a struggle, learn, metabolize, grow."Three days later, on March 17, Rolling Stone published an unreleased audio recording of an alleged conversation between Majors and Jabbari. The publication reported that the conversation happened in September 2022, after a "days-long fight" between the then-couple."I've never aggressed a woman I aggressed you," a male voice, reportedly belonging to Majors, says in the audio."You strangled me and pushed me against the car," a woman, reportedly Jabbari, replies."Yes, all those things are under 'aggressed,' yeah," he responds. "That's never happened to me.""Because I said something sarcastically, in your eyes?" she asks."Well clearly, it's more than that," the man says."Something inside of you," she replies."Yeah, towards you," he says, as the audio abruptly ends.Reps for Majors and Jabbari didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

  • How Not Like Us became an anti-Drake anthem and the subject of a messy lawsuit
    www.vox.com
To borrow a phrase from our foremost cultural observer, Azealia Banks, the boys are fighting. For almost a year now, Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been embroiled in one of raps most public and memorable beefs. It all started back in March of 2024 when Future and Metro Boomin dropped the joint album, We Dont Trust You, practically dedicated to sneak-dissing Drake. The most notable diss on the record, though, came from Lamar whos featured on the song Like That. His f the big 3 line, referring to Drake and J.Cole, ignited a weeks-long back-and-forth between Drake, Lamar, and eventually a handful of other rappers. Most of the drama remained between Drake and Lamar, as they released several explosive songs accusing one another of some pretty heinous crimes, including Lamar calling Drake a pedophile. It was Lamar, who ultimately came out on top thanks to the Mustard-produced Not Like Us. The track became 2024s song of the summer and a certified West Coast anthem. It also won five Grammys last month, including Record and Song of the Year. Lamars success also seemingly earned him the coveted gig of headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show last month, making him the first solo rap act to do so.Almost a year since the release of Like That, Drake and Lamar arent really at war. Drake, at least, has ostensibly waved the white flag, directing his ire at his and Lamars record label instead. On January 15, Drake filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group for defamation regarding the lyrics in Not Like Us. (He originally filed a petition last November accusing UMG and Spotify of artificially inflating the popularity of the diss track and participating in a pay-for-play scheme with iHeartRadio, before withdrawing it.) The current defamation suit claims that the allegations in Not Like Us specifically, the certified pedophile lyric, endangered Drake and his family. The suit references a shooting outside of Drakes Toronto mansion a few days after the songs release and two other break-in attempts at Drakes home over the following two days. On March 17, UMG filed a motion to dismiss, stating that their signee lost a rap battle that he provoked and calling the suit a misguided attempt to salve his wounds. After nearly 15 tumultuous years in the game, Drake is hardly a stranger to mess and beefing with other rappers. At first, it seemed like this latest feud was exactly what raps sensitive king needed in a rather uninspired era in his career, defined by dull musical output and gross jabs at women. However, following Lamars verbal lashings and his heavily mocked decision to pursue legal action as a response, its hard to see how Drakes career completely overcomes this moment.Whos beefing with who? Kendrick Lamar wins the Best Rap Album award for Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers during the 65th Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena on February 5, 2023, in Los Angeles, California. Johnny Nunez/Getty Images for the Recording AcademyOn March 22, Future and Metro essentially released a breakup album from their frequent collaborator and former comrade, Drake. (Drake and Future have nearly 30 collaborations combined, and Metro executive-produced their 2015 mixtape What A Time to Be Alive.) We Dont Trust You is packed with subliminal messages seemingly directed at Drake, regarding his shady maneuvers. However, it was Kendricks relatively gentle prodding on the track Like That that was ultimately the most incendiary. On the track which has sat at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in a row now he raps Motherfuck the big three, its just big me, renouncing his informal association with rap peers Drake and Cole. On the recent Drake song First Person Shooter, off his latest album For All the Dogs, Cole claimed on his guest verse that he, Drake, and Lamar are the Big 3 of the current era of hip-hop. Nevertheless, Lamars ire on Like That is mostly pointed at his noted frenemy Drake, brushing off his purportedly unstoppable commercial success. Your best work is a light pack, he asserts. N, Prince outlived Mike Jack. Cole responded first on April 5 with the track 7-Minute Drill, featured on his aptly titled mixtape Might Delete Later. Cole throws shots at Lamars Pulitzer Prize-winning discography, calling his latest album Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers tragic and claiming his Grammy-winning sophomore album Good Kid, Maad City put [listeners] to sleep. He also promises to humble Lamar if push comes to shove. However, by April 10, Cole had rescinded his warning shot, including removing 7-Minute Drill from streaming platforms. At his annual Dreamville Festival, he issued a heavily mocked quasi-apology to Lamar. I tried to jab [Lamar] back, and I try to keep it friendly, he told the crowd in North Carolina. But at the end of the day when I listen to it, and when it comes out and I see the talk, that dont sit right with my spirit. Before Drake could unleash his own diss, Future and Metro released the follow-up, We Still Dont Trust You, on April 12. This time, A$AP Rocky got some punches in. On the song Show of Hands, he rapped Ns in they feelings over women. What, you hurt or something? I smash before you birthed, son. Flacko hit it first, son. This is presumably a response to Drake apparently dissing A$AP and his partner Rihanna, whom Drake previously dated, on his song Fear of Heights. (Fans have also speculated that A$AP means he previously slept with the mother of Drakes son.) Another one of Drakes most famous industry mates, The Weeknd, appears on both Future and Metro albums. However, on We Still Dont Trust Yous eighth track, All to Myself, he sings, I thank God that I never signed my life away. Fans interpreted that as a jab about Drakes label OVO Sound, which, despite his heavy association with the label, The Weeknd ultimately never signed to. Who is Drake dissing on Push Ups? On Saturday, April 13, Drakes long-awaited response titled Push Ups (Drop & Give Me Fifty) mysteriously made its way to the internet. The seemingly unmixed demo made many social media users speculate whether the song was AI-generated before noted hip-hop commentator DJ Akademiks eventually played it noticeably with some tweaks, like the omission of a line about P. Diddy and a different beat on his livestream. Hip-hop radio station Power 105 also streamed a high-quality version of the song. Given Drakes comments on Instagram over the weekend, including a photo of Uma Thurman single-handedly taking on a group of fighters in the 2003 film Kill Bill, all signs point to the track being legitimate. That said, Push Ups is a hefty (and expectedly humorous) diss record, taking aim at Drakes aforementioned opps while pulling some other parties into the crossfire. One of them is the Weeknds manager, CashXO, who he accuses of blowing Abels bread trickin. He also takes shots at Memphis Grizzlies player Ja Morant, who fans are speculating he was previously in a love triangle with. In probably the silliest development of this multi-pronged feud, he throws some digs at rapper Rick Ross, another frequent collaborator of his. This n turning 50, Drake raps. Every song that made it on the chart he got it from Drizzy. Ross swiftly followed up with his own diss called Champagne Moments, which quickly went viral. Among other insults and accusations, he calls Drake, whos mixed, white boy and claims he got a nose job.Drake and Rick Ross at P. Diddys Ciroc The New Years Eve Party at his home on December 31, 2013, in Miami Beach, Florida. Johnny Nunez/WireImageAs for Lamar, Drake offers a pretty comprehensive rebuttal, poking fun at Lamar for apparently wearing a size 7 shoe and his collaborations with pop acts like Maroon 5 and Taylor Swifts Bad Blood. (Lest we forget, Drake has also linked up with Swift for a check.) He also names some artists who he feels have surpassed Lamars stardom, including SZA, whos signed to Lamars own Top Dawg Entertainment label. (She apparently doesnt want to be involved.) Theres also a bar that many listeners, including DJ Akademiks, interpreted as an audacious mention of Lamars fianc, Whitney Alford (I be with some bodyguards like Whitney). However, this could also be a misreading of a more obvious reference to the Whitney Houston film, The Bodyguard.Drakes latest round with Kendrick took a particularly dark turnAhead of Lamar dropping his response, Euphoria, Drake released another diss track for Lamar on April 19 called Taylor Made Freestyle using AI-generated vocals from 2Pac and Snoop Dogg to spit on his behalf. Drakes weaponization of artificial intelligence, specifically regarding the deceased Tupac Shakur, generated mixed responses online. Some fans were amused by his innovation, while others, including Snoop, seemed downright confused. However, after his and Lamars most recent round of disses, these criticisms would be the least of his concerns. On April 30, Lamar finally dropped his rebuttal titled Euphoria on streaming platforms. He spends most of the 6-minute track poking holes in Drakes public persona. Among other digs, he questions the Canadian rappers proximity to Black American culture and his relationships with women. A few days later, Lamar followed up with 6:16 in LA, claiming that Drake has a leak in his camp. Presumably, Drake wanted to get ahead of any dirt Lamar could possibly expose by dropping the track Family Matters this past Friday, along with a music video. In addition to Lamar, Drake has some more words for Ross, The Weeknd, and even Pharrell Williams. However, its Lamars fiance, Whitney Alford, whos the primary target of Drakes claims. First, he suggests that one of Lamars children is actually fathered by his general manager, Dave Free, whos also the former president of Lamars former label, Top Dawg Entertainment. Then he makes the more troubling allegation that Lamar puts his hands on Alford. They hired a crisis management team to clean up the fact that you beat on your queen, he says at the end of the track. Seemingly tipped off by a mole, Lamar followed up just a few minutes later with Meet the Grahams, with cover art featuring a box of the weight-loss drug Ozempic supposedly prescribed to Drake. In that song, Lamar addresses his verses to Drakes son, Adonis, and Drakes parents. Dear Adonis, Im sorry that man is your father, he bluntly opens the track. He also dedicated a verse to Drakes alleged 11-year-old daughter, who would be the second child the rapper has kept hidden from the public. Drake, however, was quick to jump on Instagram and shut down the claim that he had a secret daughter. More strikingly, though, Lamar refers to Drake as a predator and even likens him to Harvey Weinstein. Later that evening, Lamar dropped yet another track this time, produced by DJ Mustard, who seemingly also has beef with Drake Not Like Us, where he outright calls Drake a pedophile. In particular, social media lost it over the triple entendre, tryna strike a chord, and its probably A-minor. On May 5, it seemed like Drake was ready to bow out after releasing the track The Heart Part 6. In addition to the curious claim that he purposely planted false information for Lamar to use, he spends most of the song denying that he sleeps with underage girls. He even addresses a controversial incident from 2018, when Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown, who was then 14 years old, stated in an interview that she texted the rapper about boys.In a haphazard move, Drake attempts to connect these claims to Lamars own trauma, referencing the one record where [Lamar] said [he] got molested titled Mother I Sober only Lamar doesnt state that he was sexually abused on the song. In rapping about his cousin who was accused of sexual assault, he claims twice on the track that his cousin didnt touch him, despite his family not believing him.Drake ends the song with a rambling spoken outro, similar to Nicki Minajs Megan Thee Stallion diss Big Foot earlier this year. Im not going to lie, he says. This shit was some good exercise. In a noticeably exhausted tone, he says it is what it is, seemingly waving a white flag. Still, that hasnt stopped Lamar from publicly reveling in the chart success of Not Like Us and the support of his industry allies. On June 19, otherwise known as Juneteenth, Lamar held The Pop Out: Ken & Friends at the Kia Forum to celebrate Los Angeles rap and, once again, broadcast his hatred for Drake. At the concert, which was streamed on Amazon and Twitch, Lamar performed Not Like Us six times. With each replay, a growing number of musicians, athletes, and other big West Coast names including YG, Steve Lacy, Russell Westbrook, Black Hippy, and Mustard joined him onstage, in what looked like an Avengers ensemble of Drake haters.Drake has previously thrived in beefs but can he win when the whole industry is against him?For the most part, Drake has handled his public gang-up with an expected sense of humor and irreverence. However, with the latest releases, he seems to be fighting a battle he cant win, using wishy-washy bars to attempt to toss off some serious allegations. Its worth noting that Drakes domestic abuse claims against Lamar are just as serious. Nevertheless, rap fans on social media seem more invested in the seedy gossip thats surrounded Drakes mostly private romantic life, including these unsettling accusations about underage girls. Plus, after years of dominating the rap scene and making enemies out of several rappers, it seems social media users are ready to see the rapper taken down a few pegs.As anyone whos even slightly followed rap over the past decade and a half can attest, this isnt Drakes first time engaging in warfare with his peers. Most famously, his career has seen headline-generating battles with Meek Mill, Pusha T, Joe Budden, and Kanye West. Arguably, his most infamous tiff was the culmination of a long-brewing beef with Pusha T in 2018, where the Virginia rapper exposed Drakes formerly hidden son, Adonis, to the world. Despite the brief moment of humiliation, Drake ultimately emerged the victor that is, if youre using chart numbers and general popularity as a determining metric. After his moderately received victory lap of an album, Views, he was given a more gripping narrative to fuel his blockbuster 2018 album Scorpion. At the same time, he was once again proving his mass appeal outside of the rap audiences with party bangers like Gods Plan, Nice For What, and In My Feelings, all of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. More recently, however, Drake has been involved in several seemingly one-sided beefs with famous women. On his 2023 song with 21 Savage, Circo Loco, he threw out a not-so-subtle diss at rapper Megan Thee Stallion (This bitch lie bout getting shots but she still a stallion), joining a chorus of famous men disputing her now-proven claims that singer Tory Lanez shot her in the foot in 2020. During the rollout of For All the Dogs, he vexed actor Halle Berry, who claimed he used a photo of her for the artwork for his single Slime You Out without her permission. Additionally, hes attempted to reignite drama with his former fling Rihanna. Aside from his digs on Fear of Heights, he played their collaboration Work at one of his concerts just to claim that he doesnt sing [the] song anymore. Drakes songwriting is often propelled by a sweeping sense of grievance and an obsession with the past and his haters (hes not that different from Taylor Swift after all!). However, his constant feelings of victimhood within his relationships with women and the subsequent, more blatant misogyny thats grown out of that has begun to wear on critics and parts of his female fanbase. Its an observation that Lamar has sharply utilized in his diss tracks over the weekend. While this latest beef originally seemed like an ultimately invigorating experience for Drake in a snoozy part of his career, Lamars accusations of Drake being a pedophile and other predatory behavior have left a strong stench on Drakes public image. Itll be fascinating to see whether the seemingly invincible rapper can rebuild fans respect after such dark claims. However, history has proven that male rappers can still thrive despite the most sordid allegations.Update, March 17, 5:30 pm ET: This story was originally published on April 17, 2024, and has been updated multiple times, most recently to UMGs motion to dismiss Drakes lawsuit. • Trumps showdown with the courts over deportations, briefly explained
    www.vox.com
This story appeared in The Logoff, a daily newsletter that helps you stay informed about the Trump administration without letting political news take over your life. Subscribe here.Welcome to The Logoff: Today Im focusing on the Trump administrations showdown with the courts over deportations, a standoff with major implications for immigration policy and even larger ones for the rule of law.Whats the latest? Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a wartime power that gives the president authority to deport certain foreign nationals without a hearing. By Saturday, the administration had used that power to deport hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador, including alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. A federal judge ordered the deportations paused amid lawsuits from civil liberties groups, but the migrants arrived in El Salvador and remain there despite the judges order.Did the administration violate a court order? The judge ruled the deportations should be paused. The administration claims the judge lacked the authority to halt the deportations, in part because his order wasnt issued until some deportation flights were over international waters. Critics say the administration is pettifogging the issue to obscure the fact that it overran a federal judge.Whats the big picture for immigration? Due process was always going to pose legal and logistical hurdles to Trumps plan for the largest mass deportation campaign in history. In the Alien Enemies Act, the administration has found a partial workaround at the expense of civil liberties. Whats the big picture for democracy? Amid congressional Republicans supine posture, the judicial branch has been the main check on Trumps power. The big question has been: What happens if Trump ignores the courts? The administration has now shown at least a willingness to flout the spirit of a court ruling even if theyre not explicitly saying theyre defying the courts order. That puts us a step closer to a full-blown Constitutional crisis. And with that, its time to log offIve struggled to face whats unfolding in places that depended on USAID before the administration gutted the agency, which is why I was so grateful for my colleague Sigal Samuels Vox piece on how we can help. She writes: Some may question whether it should fall to private donors to fill in the funding gaps this way; isnt this the governments job? It is. But in moments when the government isnt doing nearly enough, individual generosity can really shine by stepping in with emergency aid. This is one of those moments. You are not powerless here. Thanks for reading, and Ill see you back here tomorrow.See More:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 AI boost 'confirmed' after surprise patent update
    www.dailystar.co.uk
Nintendo Switch 2 will seemingly utilise AI upscaling to hit higher resolutions, according to a fresh patent update here's all we know so far about the technologyTech22:00, 17 Mar 2025Switch 2 could have some neat tricks up its sleeveNintendo has arguably never placed as much of a premium on impressive visuals as its rivals, but with the Switch 2 getting a full reveal on April 2, it appears the company is about to make waves. We're waiting to find out the system's release date and pricing, but we may now have another glimpse at how Nintendo will maximise its hardware using AI.Article continues belowRumours had suggested the Switch 2 would leverage AI upscaling to hit higher resolutions, but a fresh patent update seemingly confirms it meaning we could be in for 4K versions of Mario and Zelda adventures at long last. Here's all we've learned.Switch 2 could be much more capable than its predecessorA patent, which was updated and published last week on March 13, has seemingly confirmed Nintendo is looking to upscale its games to 4K (thanks, Game Rant)."Image up-conversion is a technique that allows for conversion of images produced in a first resolution (e.g., 540p resolution or 960540 with 0.5 megapixels) to a higher resolution (e.g., 1080p resolution, 19201080, with 2.1 megapixels). This process can be used to show images of the first resolution on a higher resolution display," the patent explains."Thus, for example, a 540p image can be displayed on a 1080p television and (depending on the nature of the up-conversion process) may be shown with increased graphical fidelity as compared to if the 540p image were displayed directly with traditional (e.g., linear) upscaling on a 540 television."It certainly sounds a lot like DLSS, which is NVIDIA's version of the tech. We've got a full explainer of the tech, but the short version is that it fills in pixels moment-to-moment with information so the device itself doesn't have to render it natively. As I mentioned in my piece about my move to PC gaming, it's not a 'silver bullet' solution things can flicker, or textures can look a little too shiny, but for the most part it's an impressive way to leverage AI. It means a less powerful machine can still offer plenty of detail because the hardware itself isn't doing as much of the heavy lifting.Article continues belowWe're expecting the dock to play a part in helping provide the power for AI upscaling, but we'll find out more in a couple of weeks. For more on Switch 2, be sure to check out this fantastic trio of early games for the system which leaked. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • The Xbox 360 May Now Be the Most Easily-Moddable Console Next to the Original Xbox
    gizmodo.com
The seventh generation of consoles headlined by Microsofts Xbox 360 may not be so dead after all. Despite Microsofts determination to end its elder consoles long lifespan by killing off the Xbox 360 game store last year, prospective modders now have a new way to access a horde of homebrew content without having to crack open the near-20-year-old systems shell. All you need is a little know-how, a USB drive, and a fair amount of patience. The software is called BadUpdate, and you can get for free on the creators GitHub page (first noted by The Verge), To get it working, youll need either a copy of Tony Hawks American Wasteland, or the demo for Rock Band Blitz. Youll need to format the USB drive to FAT32 format, but after that the instructions are relatively simple. The exploit should work on any console updated to dashboard version 17559, the latest version of the Xbox 360 software. Running this hack will enable unsigned code, effectively meaning any software that isnt hogtied by the Xbox 360s hardware locks. So you could use it to run the Xbox 360 Homebrew Store straight from the console. This will let you access a huge number of emulators, homebrew apps, and customized dashboards. There are other ways to exploit an Xbox 360, including the old RGH exploit, otherwise known as Reset Glitch Hack. The reason the BadUpdate software hack is great news for prospective modders is you no longer need to physically open up the console or do any hardware modifications. The main issue youll run across is, if you ever turn your console off, youll need to re-run the exploit again. Other than that, the exploit should work on consoles with the Winchester-model Xbox 360, which were the latest version of the console Microsoft released back in 2014. The YouTubers at Modern Vintage Console also confirmed BadUpdate works on the most-recent version of the Xbox 360. The channel offers a video tutorial. They noted it takes around 10 to 15 minutes to run it successfully, requiring several attempts. The original Xbox was even more easily moddable without needing to dig into the systems guts (its how we got XBMC!). In that case, you need to use a USB drive, a software pack called Softmod, and a copy of the original Tom Clancys Splinter Cell. This let you play homebrew titles, load up your own custom menus, andof courseplay modded games. That software mod was more persistent than BadUpdate, but the RGH process for the original Xbox also involved soldering resistors on a motherboard.Modding old consoles is a right of passage for many who want to experience all the homebrew and hardware hacker scene has to offer. If you have an old Xbox 360, why not give it a try, if nothing else than to grab your old Xbox 360 controller off its dusty shelf for the first time in more than a decade.

  • Teslas Self-Driving Fails the Wile E. Coyote Test
    gizmodo.com
By AJ Dellinger Published March 17, 2025 | Comments (0) | A Tesla drives toward a wall that is disguised to look like the road Mark Rober/YouTube One of the biggest obstacles, figuratively, facing self-driving cars is the ability to expect the unexpected, quickly identify potential issues, and respond in a well-reasoned manner to produce a safe outcome. One of the biggest obstacles, literally, facing self-driving cars are giant Wile E. Coyote-style walls painted to look like the road ahead in an attempt to trick them into crashing. Okay so the latter is pretty unlikely to arise in the real world, but that didnt stop former NASA engineer and current YouTuber Mark Rober from seeing just how well self-driving vehicles stand up to the Looney Tunes test. In his most recent video titled, Can You Fool A Self Driving Car? Rober pits two different autonomous vehicle systemsTeslas computer vision-only Autopilot and an unnamed system that uses Light Detection and Ranging sensorsup against each other in a series of tests that culminates in an attempt to stop a car in its tracks using the same technique that Wile E. Coyote tried to use to stop the Road Runner. At the risk of spoiling the video for you, the Tesla leaves a cartoonishly large hole in the wall after Autopilot plows right through the thing at about 40 miles per hour. It is the third failure in six tests that Rober runs, including a series of experiments that set out to determine if a self-driving car will mow down a child if the conditions are adverse enough. While Teslas Autopilot technology manages to stop for a stationary dummy, a dummy that runs out in front of it at the last second, and a dummy that is obscured by blindingly bright lights, the somewhat autonomous system sends the fake kid right over the bumper when it was hidden by fog and heavy rain. And for as unlikely as it is that youll come across a photorealistic recreation of the road in front of you plastered on a wall, fog and rain seem like pretty common obstacles.By contrast, the LiDAR system succeeded every time. This shouldnt come as too much of a surprise as the video is lowkey an ad for LiDAR. It starts with Rober using a portable LiDAR sensor to map out the Space Mountain ride at Disney World and features a plug for a LiDAR manufacturer, so you kinda knew where this whole thing was going from the start. But it is noteworthy just how effective the LiDAR system was shown to be in the video, as Tesla has very publicly decided to forgo these sensors in favor of relying entirely on computer vision. The reasoning for this varies depending on who you ask and when, but it usually boils down to LiDAR sensors costing too much, requiring more data processing to use, and ultimately serving as a crutch that slows down the development of computer vision. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has gone so far as to call LiDAR a fools errand.Maybe that is true, but it also doesnt barrel through walls, so gotta weigh the pros and cons. Hard to imagine letting your car slam into a kid that it might have avoided with other technology on board and saying, Well, at least this didnt slow the development of technology that eventually might not result in this exact thing that just happened. Anyway, the video is very enjoyable to watch, as are most of Robers efforts. And, judging by the replies to Robers tweet showing the footage of the wall crash, its turned the Tesla True Believers on Twitter into conspiracists who believe Rober is bought by Big LiDAR and trying to slander Tesla. So thats fun.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Thomas Maxwell Published March 17, 2025 Kate Yoder, Grist Published March 17, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 14, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published March 14, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published March 13, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 13, 2025

  • Saturn's 128 New Moons May Be Remnants of Past Cosmic Collisions
    www.discovermagazine.com
While Earths one and only moon enthralls everyone on this planet, it cant hold a candle to Saturns 274 moons, 128 of which were recently discovered and recognized by the International Astronomical Union. With this new surge in its moon count, Saturn prevails with the most moons out of any other planet in the Solar System. Astronomers are now wondering, though, how this abundance of moons emerged in the first place.Regular vs. Irregular MoonsAlthough Saturn boasts an impressive amount of moons, they arent quite like the one were used to seeing in our sky every night. The Earths moon falls under the category of regular moons, which are natural satellites that follow a mostly stable, circular orbit around a host planet. The newly discovered moons of Saturn, on the other hand, have all been categorized as irregular (overall, 24 of Saturns moons are regular, while the other 250 are considered irregular).Irregular moons typically follow distant and retrograde (backwards) orbits and have greater inclinations (related to the tilt of an orbit). Another difference is that while regular moons emerged as their host planet was forming, many irregular moons are believed to have been planetesimals (small, early-stage planets) captured by their host planet at the end of its formation. Split From CollisionsA large chunk of Saturns new irregular moons 64 of them were described in a recent paper submitted to the Planetary Science Journal, currently available on the arXiv preprint server. In this paper, researchers propose that these small irregular moons likely originated early in Saturns history from multiple independent collisions, second-generation collisions between fragments of an initial collision, or a mixture of the two scenarios. The moons, observed from 2019 to 2021 at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, were placed into subgroups within two categories of Saturnian irregulars; the Inuit group contains the Kiviuq and Siarnaq subgroups, and the Norse group contains the Phoebe, Mundilfari, and Kari subgroups. The researchers suggest that a recent collision, that may have occurred at least 100 million years ago, may have created the Mundilfari subgroup, a hypothesis that was previously advanced in a 2021 study. This collision would have involved a larger irregular moon that, when impacted, split into numerous fragments.Read More: Saturn's Rings Formed Long After the PlanetThe Outer Planets' MoonsResearchers are uncertain that any additional moons will be found orbiting Saturn in the future, although Jupiter might make up some ground it currently has 95 recognized moons, and this number is expected to rise as more observations are made. However, Jupiters moons will likely not surpass Saturns moons according to researchers.Back in 2024, astronomers announced one new moon for Uranus (S/2023 U1) and two new moons for Neptune (S/2002 N5 and S/2021 N1). The new moons, found using the Subaru Telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, are the faintest to ever be observed with a ground-based telescope.Similar to Saturns new moons, the irregular moons of Uranus and Neptune exhibiting eccentric and distant orbits were possibly part of larger parent moons that experienced collisions in the past, producing groupings of fragments. Astronomers believe there are smaller fragments in these groupings that have yet to be detected, but current ground-based telescopes cannot spot them. More details on the outer planets' moons will require space missions to get a closer look. While all eyes are on Mars and the Earth's own moon, plans for missions that will explore the outer Solar System are fast-approaching; most notably, the Dragonfly spacecraft, the key piece to an upcoming mission headed by NASA, is planned to launch by 2028 for a 2034 landing on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn.
