• Samsung sets the date for wide release of One UI 7 update
    www.digitaltrends.com
The wait for Android 15 on Samsung smartphones will finally be over early next month. Samsung has announced that the highly-anticipated One UI 7 update will be released widely via the stable channel starting April 7 for Galaxy smartphone users. In the first wave of rollout, the Galaxy S24 series phones, alongside Samsungs current generation foldable Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be covered. It will eventually expand to older flagships, alongside a bunch of mid-range phones in the Galaxy A-series, as well. Recommended VideosIn the coming weeks, One UI 7 will also land on the Galaxy S24 FE, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 phones. On the tablet side, the Galaxy Tab S10 will be the early recipient, followed by the Galaxy Tab S9 series.A Guided Demo of Galaxy AI | Galaxy S25 Series | SamsungSamsung kicked off the beta-testing program in December last year, and in the past few weeks, the pool of devices has steadily expanded. One UI 7 brings a fresh design language to the phone, with a cleaner Home Screen, improved widgets, and more intuitive lock screen. Please enable Javascript to view this contentLeading the list of new features is the new Now Bar, which tracks important events and keeps users updated via a dedicated widget, right on the Lock Screen. AI is a huge part of the One UI 7 experience, riding under the Galaxy AI banner. Among them is a feature called AI Select, which is aware of the on-screen content, and based on what users highlight, it will offer actionable buttons. For example, if theres a ticket in the camera view, AI select can automatically surface one-tap controls such as adding it to the Calendar or showing the venue on Google Maps. Then theres Writing Assist, which offers a handful of AI-powered facilities such as rewriting, summarization, and proofreading, working in the same vein as Writing Tools on Apple devices. However, do keep in mind that not all One UI 7 features will be available across every compatible device. For example, the audio eraser feature, which can selectively erase noise from videos, will not go beyond phones older than the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Tab S10 duo, or the sixth-generation Samsung foldable phones. Similar is the situation with natural language search in the Settings app. Editors Recommendations

  • NASAs stuck astronauts have finally left the space station
    www.digitaltrends.com
After a nine-month stay that was only supposed to last eight days, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have finally left the International Space Station (ISS) and are on their way home.Seated inside a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft alongside fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, Williams and Wilmore undocked from the orbital outpost at 1:05 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 18.The crew are expected to splash down off the coast of Florida at around 5:57 p.m. ET later on Tuesday. Please enable Javascript to view this contentWilliams and Wilmore arrived at the ISS in June 2024 on the first crewed flight of Boeings Starliner spacecraft. But technical problems with the vehicle raised safety concerns, prompting engineers to bring home the capsule without its two astronauts. The decision left Williams and Wilmore, both experienced astronauts, with no choice but to wait for NASA to make alternative arrangements for a ride home.In an effort to avoid disrupting its usual crew rotation schedule that works on a six-month cycle, NASA held back two of the four astronauts on the Crew-9 flight that headed to the ISS in September last year. The decision meant the Crew Dragons two empty seats could be given to Williams and Wilmore on the vehicles return flight today.Ahead of her departure, Williams was asked what shed miss most about being in orbit. Everything, she said, before adding: This has been [our] third flight to the ISS. We helped put it together, weve been up here watching it change. Just living here gives us a unique perspective not just outside the window, obviously but on how to solve problems. I dont want to lose that spark of inspiration and perspective when I leave so I am going to have to bottle it up, somehow.Asked what she found most challenging about ending up on a mission that lasted far longer than intended, Williams responded: Its been a rollercoaster for [family and supporters], probably more than it has been for us.Were here, we have a mission. We do what we have to do every day. The hardest thing has been not knowing when wed come back. All of that uncertainty has been the most difficult part.Whiel some media reports suggested the pair had been stranded in space and were awaiting rescue, recently appointed NASA administrator Janet Petro and other NASA officials have maintained that the extended mission was managed in line with contingency planning for human spaceflight, adding that both astronauts were well prepared for a long-duration stay, and spent their time aboard the ISS contributing to scientific research.Editors Recommendations

One-fifth of Christopher Tsai's $137 million portfolio is in Tesla stock.Tsai said he hopes Musk's work with DOGE is "short-lived" so that Musk can focus on his businesses.Musk's attempts to slash government spending have brought controversy and turmoil to his companies.Christopher Tsai, the president and chief investment officer of investment management firm Tsai Capital, said he hopes Elon Musk's work with the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is temporary."I hope his involvement with DOGE is short-lived so he can spend even more time on his businesses," Tsai said in an interview with The Guardian published Saturday.Tsai, who is also the founder of his eponymous firm, is heavily invested in Tesla. Tsai Capital said in an SEC filing on February 12 that it owned 69,700 Tesla shares, which comprised about one-fifth of its $137 million portfolio.Representatives for Tesla and Tsai did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.Musk's attempts to slash government spending with DOGE have caused problems for his car business. Protesters have descended upon Tesla showrooms nationwide to express their displeasure with Musk's work with DOGE.Tesla's stock initially benefited from a postelection boost after President Donald Trump's victory in November, but has since slid by more than 50% from recent highs. The company has also seen its sales decline in Europe and China. To be sure, Tsai isn't the only Tesla backer who thinks that Musk isn't paying enough attention to the company.Ross Gerber, a longtime Tesla investor, told Business Insider in February that he expected Tesla stock to drop by as much as 50% this year because Musk is distracted by other areas like AI."His 100% focus is on AI, and that's really a detriment to Tesla more than it's a plus for xAI and all the other businesses because he doesn't work at Tesla anymore," Gerber said, adding that he would be "more confident" if Musk focused on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software instead.Last week, Gerber told BI that he doesn't expect Tesla's stock to rebound this year despite its recent losses. Musk had alienated Tesla's customers with his political activities and positions, Gerber said.Musk, too, seems to be aware of the toll that helming DOGE has taken. Musk said in an interview with Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, which aired on March 10, that he was balancing his work with DOGE and his other businesses "with great difficulty.""I'm just here trying to make government more efficient, eliminate waste and fraud, and so far, we're making good progress, actually," Musk told Kudlow.

  • Russia said it's rebuilt its Superjet airliner 'from scratch' with local parts after being cut off from Western supplies

2025-03-18T05:27:38Z Read in app A Sukhoi Superjet-100 aircraft, recently renamed the Yakovlev Superjet-100, is being modified with Russian parts to reduce its dependence on Western companies. Maksim Konstantinov/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Rostec says it's successfully flown its regional jet after replacing the engine with a Russian one. It's been trying to remake its Superjet-100, which relied on Western parts, with Russian components. The state-owned firm hopes to certify the modified jet this year as it deals with wartime sanctions.A Russian state-owned conglomerate said it's rebuilt its regional jet using locally sourced parts and successfully flew a prototype for 40 minutes.Rostec said on Monday that the test flight showed the Yakovlev Superjet-100 can fly with the Russian PD-8 engine, which replaces a previous engine reliant on a French manufacturer. The project is part of Rostec's effort to "Russify" its aircraft as international sanctions cut off the flow and maintenance of the Superjet's parts, many of which were previously Western. The French company Thales, for example, supplied the Superjet's avionics, while US firms provided flight controls and auxiliary power units. Thus, the sanctions posed a critical problem for Russia's commercial fleet, making it difficult for them to receive the servicing needed to fly safely.Rostec's solution is ambitious. It seeks to replace all foreign parts of the Superjet with Russian components and have the airliner certified to enter service by 2025. By 2030, it hopes to fill an order for 89 of the "Russified" jets. The replacement plan was already floated in 2021 as Moscow's tensions with the West soured, but the need for it was exacerbated by the Western sanctions that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022."After 2022, the Superjet will have to be essentially reassembled from scratch," said Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec, in the company's statement.Chemezov acknowledged that completing the project by the deadline could be difficult, saying it was "being implemented in a very tight timeframe by the standards of the global aircraft industry."The Superjet was Russia's 2011 answer to regional aircraft like the Embraer E-jets and the Bombardier CRJ, with about 100 seats. These are typically designed for shorter trips, with distances similar to flights from New York to Miami.Rostec and the United Aircraft Corporation, its subsidiary company responsible for the Superjet, said they've been adjusting the Superjet by gradually replacing its Western parts and conducting tests.A prototype of the Superjet successfully flew for 54 minutes in August 2023, but that was with its old French-Russian engine the PowerJet SaM146.The company said that after the recent test flight with the replacement engine, the PD-8, it expects to get certification for the Russian component by the fall of this year. With Russia largely sanctioned from the international market, Rostec will likely be unable to sell its modified Superjet, which it now calls the Superjet-New, to most countries and airlines.Rostec also hopes to similarly replace the foreign parts on its flagship airliner, the MC-21. Local airline Aeroflot has ordered 339 "Russified" planes, including the Superjet-New and the MC-21.The US Treasury Department and the European Commission did not respond to requests for comment on the Superjet tests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

How Palworld Drew So Many Players Remains A Mystery For Its DevsUnderstanding why a hit game, especially an indie title, becomes a sensation can be valuable for the gaming community. It may provide insights into what elements contribute to a game's success. However, success does not always follow a specific formula, and even the developers may not fully be aware of the true reasons behind their game's popularity. An example in this case is Pocketpair's hit open-world monster-hunting game Palworld, which has over 32 million players across all platforms in the first year since it was released in Early Access in January 2024.John "Bucky" Buckley, the game's global community manager, talked about how the game attracted so many players during this year's Game Developer's Conference panel. He frankly said, "I don't know, please don't ask me. I know someone will ask me after, but I promise you we don't know the answer. "Surprisingly, this stunning achievement of selling eight million copies merely six days after its launch isn't as a source of happiness for developers as I thought it would be. "Within that first week, we hit this disgusting number that makes me feel sick when I see it... It really was unbelievable, and just seeing this today still kind of freaks me out. " Buckley recalled the panic situation when the player count kept soaring at launch, which was definitely out of expectation from the team who thought the game would only attract mainly Japanese players' attention, "That's when things started to get weird."Only a month after the launch, the game acquired 25 million players, and following that, the team barely talked about the player's numbers until the recent news of 32 million players. There are a few reasons, "basically the short version is that there were some bad vibes coming, and these bad vibes convinced us to stop marketing for a while and go a little bit quiet." One of the facts that resulted in the bad vibes was the game's nickname, "Pokemon with guns," which made the developers feel uneasy. The lawsuit from the Pokmon developer arrived in September of last year, as was bound to happen eventually. Although Nintendo may not be interested in what makes the game successful, it is certainly protective of its copyrights and takes legal action under the belief that the game infringes on its patents, which were only filed after Palworld's release. For the development team, where nearly everyone is a huge fan, "it was a very depressing day" when the lawsuit was filed. Buckley described that "everyone heads down and walking in the rain." The lawsuit has changed much of the team's plan, including scaling back the Tokyo Game Show and "hiring security guards."@Palworld_EN

  • OpenAI Claims the AI Race is Over if They Arent Allowed to Use Copyrighted Materials
    cgshares.com
From struggling to provide coherent answers to questions about where their training data comes from, to reluctantly admitting that training AI would be impossible without using copyrighted materials, to openly urging the government to make it easier to use content for AI training by now, OpenAI is not even attempting to conceal the fact that its wonder-machines are built on questionably-obtained content, reaffirming that once again in its recent proposal submitted to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.First noticed by Chat GPT Is Eating the World, the 15-page document regurgitates several points from the companys January proposal, AI in America: OpenAIs Economic Blueprint namely, comparing artificial intelligence to interstate highways, calling for the investment of billions of dollars in the AI industry, opposing state- and federal-level regulations that would prohibit AI firms from scraping content and allow content creators to opt-out, and, naturally, fearmongering by contrasting evil, communist Chinese AI with their own good, democratic AI with comparisons at times so cheesy, clichd, and over-the-top, it feels as if youve been teleported back to the 1960s at the height of the Cold War.In its section specifically addressing copyright, OpenAI declared that if the PRCs developers have unfettered access to data and American companies are left without fair use access, the race for AI is effectively over. America loses, as does the success of democratic AI, essentially admitting that without scraping copyrighted content, their generative models arent possible, while, of course, spicing up the admission with a generous pinch of faux-patriotism to avoid sounding like theyre in the wrong. While its blatantly obvious that OpenAI is simply doing what every other company does securing funding, opposing regulation, and using language designed to resonate with the current administration the company itself paints a picture of being deeply concerned about their home country, insisting that applying the fair use doctrine to AI is not just a matter of the United States competitiveness but one of national security. The rapid advances seen with the PRCs DeepSeek, among other recent developments, show that Americas lead on frontier AI is far from guaranteed, the proposal reads. Given concerted state support for critical industries and infrastructure projects, theres little doubt that the PRCs AI developers will enjoy unfettered access to data including copyrighted data that will improve their models. As such, the tech giant is pushing the US government to make sure copyright laws and regulations dont interfere with the AI scraping machine, actively monitor the overall availability of data to American AI firms, and assess whether other countries are restricting American companies access to data and other critical inputs. They also want the government to keep an eye on domestic policy debates and ongoing litigation, ready to step in at the federal level if any pesky states dare to decide for themselves whether they want to embrace AI or not. And, as the cherry on top, theyre asking for more access to government-held or government-supported data because, of course, the US government is just so fond of sharing top-secret documents. We highly encourage you to check out the full list of OpenAIs outlandish claims and demands here or its TL;DR version over here.Dont forget to join our 80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us onInstagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post OpenAI Claims the AI Race is Over if They Arent Allowed to Use Copyrighted Materials appeared first on CG SHARES.
