  • Lunar Remastered Collection: Bringing new fans to an old favorite
    blog.playstation.com
When Lunar debuted in North America in 1993, it was a standout in the emerging Western market for Japanese RPGs. Lunar featured detailed, animated cinematic cutscenes, plenty of voice acting, high-quality music, andmost importantlyan endearing story packed with engaging and memorable characters. While it wasnt the first CD-ROM-based JRPG to hit the market, it was one that left a powerful impact on everyone who played it.A sequel, two PlayStation remakes, a PSP outing and more further broadened the audience for Lunar. More than 30 years after the series debut, Lunar and Lunar 2 are coming back to the realm of PlayStation with the Lunar Remastered Collection. To give some insight into what makes the Lunar games specialand to stir fond memories among longtime fanswe talked to Matthias Pergams, Producer over at GungHo Online Entertainment America.Play VideoSilver StandardLUNAR was one of the first JRPGs on the CD-ROM format, with animated cutscenes, in-game voice acting, and even an opening theme song, Pergams explains. The series gained a dedicated following both within and outside Japan, paving the way for the genre as a whole. Its a work that has a unique historical significance. The original Lunar has been remade and re-released a few times for various platforms (along with Lunar 2, to a lesser degree), so we were curious as to why the PlayStation Complete versions of the two games were chosen as the base for the remasters. Each version is different and possesses unique merits, so we actually struggled quite a bit with this question. Ultimately, the choice came down to which version we felt represented the series best. For us, it was the PlayStation version. As this is a Remaster rather than a Remake, we were wondering if there were any major gameplay or story changes that players familiar with the original games would notice. The overall story and gameplay will remain the same as the original release, Pergams assured us. We feel that the original still holds up today, and wanted to preserve the gameplay as it was envisioned by original developer GAME ARTS. We have added a variety of quality-of-life features to make gameplay smoother, such as an adjustable Battle Speed-Up option in both games, a toggleable option for a unified inventory system in Lunar 1 designed to simplify the item management process, and also the ability to customize the behavior of individual character AI during Lunar 1s battles.View and download imageDownload the imagecloseCloseDownload this imageView and download imageDownload the imagecloseCloseDownload this imageIn this Remaster Collection, we have prepared a Classic Mode for fans who prefer to play the game with the dots as they were back in the day an environment where you can play the game with almost the same graphics as in the PlayStation 2 era. We have also prepared a CRT filter for this mode, which we hope fans will try and see. Matthias PergamsRemastered LusterSo what is new and improved in this remaster? The most visible changes are the graphical updates, which include remastered graphics, in-game effects, UI, animated cutscenes, bromides (in-game collectible card items), and more. Perhaps the biggest feature is the new aspect ratio, as weve expanded the size of the screen to accommodate that of modern TVs. All the above features are in the Remastered Mode. The other is Classic Mode, which allows users to play the games with the graphics of the original PlayStation version. One major topic of discussion among longtime Lunar fans is the voice acting. When the announcement post went up here on the PlayStation Blog, it was revealed that there would be an all-new cast. How did the team select the new voices? Our priority when recording was making sure that we preserved the identity of each character through their new voice actors. We considered how we wanted each character to sound. Once we locked that down, we started looking at voice actors who were close to that, and then selected them based on how well they captured what we were envisioning. The end product is something were proud of.We also had all the vocal songs in Lunar 1 and 2 sung by the voice actresses of Luna and Lucia respectively, which we modeled after the original Japanese version of the game, Pergams noted. We asked Mr Iwadare to write a new song for this piece. The song is called Looking up at TERRA. It is used in the game selection screen, so I hope fans will listen to it. Matthias PergamsThe famous cutscenes are getting a touch-up, too. One of the key features of Lunar is the animated cutscenes, so we took a great deal of care with them during the remastering process. The original scenes still hold up well today, so our main goal in remastering was to touch them up for modern audiences, rather than change the content itself. We think the results speak for themselves! All of these updates and changes were done with the blessing and supervision of the original staff. Throughout development we frequently consulted GAME ARTS, the original development studio, and incorporated their feedback, explains Pergams. We also consulted other development staff, including the original composer, scenario writer, and character designer. Their input has been invaluable in maintaining the spirit of the original games during the remastering process. One such individual who revisited Lunar for this remaster is famed character designer Toshiyuki Kubooka. The team originally werent sure if he would be on board. Hes extremely busy these days, so when we first reached out to him, we didnt know if hed accept our offer! But he was kind enough to draw not just one, but a total of three completely new art pieces for the game.View and download imageDownload the imagecloseCloseDownload this imageView and download imageDownload the imagecloseCloseDownload this imageView and download imageDownload the imagecloseCloseDownload this imagePergams also passed along a message from Kubooka-sensei to fans. At first, I was surprised because itd been a while since Id worked on anything for Lunar, but I was really happy to have the chance to draw the cast again. Drawing them felt like meeting up with old friends again, so I had fun doing it. The art took longer than I expected, which inconvenienced everyone at Gungho America, but they were very transparent and cooperative so Im grateful to them as well.New frontiersLunar was well-loved in North America and Japan, butaside from the aforementioned PSP releaseLunars presence in Europe was nonexistent. We asked Pergams about releasing Lunar 1 and 2 Complete in Europe for the first time, and if they have anything they would like to say to players thinking about trying these games for the first time. First and foremost, thank you for considering the Lunar series! I think the core ethos of the series can be summed up in one word: Adventure. I believe the Lunar series captures the essence of the classic adventure, in which you set out into an unknown world, meet trustworthy friends, defeat evil, and find true love. All adventures are valid and worth having, but theres something nostalgic and unforgettable about the one Lunar provides. To finish things off, we wanted to see if Pergams had any advice for new players. Dont be afraid to use items! In many games, it can feel like a mistake to spend hard-earned money on temporary items rather than on permanent upgrades like weapons. However, itemsparticularly recovery itemscan make a world of difference in a tough boss fight. We also recommend trying out the games Auto Battle system, alongside the new Battle Speed-Up option, for smooth progression. However you decide to play, we hope you enjoy the Lunar games!

  • How to travel 59 units of distance while sliding continuously in Fortnite

Sliding continuously in Fortnite requires a lot of speed, but there are a few ways to get around it.As part of a Week 4 quest in Battle Royale, you need to travel 59 units of distance while continuously sliding, which isnt possible if you dont have enough speed heading into your slide. However, you dont need to struggle building up speed if you instead slide down one of the slopes found around the map.Heres how to complete the Week 4 quest Travel 59 units of distance while sliding continuously in Fortnite. How to travel 59 units of distance while sliding continuously in FortniteThe best way to travel 59 units of distance while sliding continuously and complete the Week 4 Battle Royale quest is to slide down a mountain or hill. To slide long distances, youll need a lot of speed, and an easy way to gain speed is to move downhill.Luckily, there is a lot of verticality in Chapter 6 Season 2 meaning great locations to continuously slide. We recommend to climb one of the snow-covered mountains (circled on the map above) and mark a location 59 units away from you to gauge the distance. Back up a few units to get a running start, and slide down a hill to complete the quest. If youre having trouble, you can also increase your speed with the help of items like the Kneecapper or Gold Splash. Additionally, you can use a Shockwave Grenade to propel yourself forward and land in a crouched position to slide for a long distance.

  • The best action movies on Netflix from around the world
    www.polygon.com
Netflix has a pretty vast collection of good action movies, but it can be hard to sort through the deluge of new titles regularly dropped onto the platform. Thats what were here for. Weve collected a list of great action movies that span eras, subgenres, and nations, all of which you can watch on Netflix in the U.S. Whether youre looking for a hard-boiled crime thriller, a period-piece swordplay adventure, a military drama, standout martial arts movies, or any other kind of action vehicle weve got you covered. If youre looking for something that spans across genres, be sure to check out our frequently updated list of the best movies on Netflix. If youve decided youre in the mood for a different genre on Netflix tonight, check out our lists of the best horror movies and comedy movies on the platform.Extraction 2In 2020, Netflix scored a big hit with its Chris Hemsworth-led action thriller Extraction. Directed by former stuntman Sam Hargrave, the movie leaned into an emerging trend in a post-John Wick world: hard-hitting, practical action shown cleanly in-camera, and performed by the A-list star.Extraction was a fun time with solid action, but the movie struggled with the all-too-common yellow-washed tone meant to signify the movie takes place in Bangladesh. Thankfully, Extraction 2 is just a better version of the first movie.Hargrave returns in the directors chair, and Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as super-agent Tyler Rake. The movies fantastic set-pieces shine, especially the 21-minute prison break sequence, presented as a no-cut oner. But Extraction 2 also gives Hemsworths co-stars more time to shine, especially sibling mercenary duo Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa. There are plans in place for an Extraction 3, and a late casting reveal in Extraction 2 promises even more hard-hitting action on the way. Pete VolkThallumaalaThe best action movie that not enough people talked about in 2022, Thallumaala (which literally translates to Ballad of Brawls) is an ambitious nonlinear narrative telling the story of a young man who meets a group of friends through their shared love of fighting, and the viral brawl that ensues at his wedding that makes him an internet superstar. Featuring sharp and inventive editing that keeps things fresh at all times, soaring musical numbers that will stay in your head, and just a ton of cute boys who bond over brawling, Thallumaala is one of the most fun times you could possibly have at the movies. Its not light on action, either. The movie opens with a series of cascading brawls that brings the group together, and its one of many fights we see throughout the movie (and some we see multiple times, as Thallumaala unspools its complicated narrative). Its a movie that looks good and feels good at all times, and is as close to a guaranteed good time as youll ever get. This is one of those rare watch this movie, even if you dont consider yourself an action fan recommendations: Watch Thallumaala! PVThe Big 4Timo Tjahjanto burst onto the scene for many international audiences with his bloody 2018 new action classic The Night Comes for Us, but that was after proving his bona fides as a horror director with his feature debut, Macabre (co-directed with Kimo Stamboel), segments in The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, as well as his solo feature debut May the Devil Take You. That horror background was definitely present in The Night Comes for Us, considering the amount of blood and gore Tjahjanto fit in that movie. With The Big 4, that energy is still there, but you can see Tjahjanto stretching himself as a filmmaker. The Big 4 is a buddy action comedy about a group of quirky and lovable retired assassins who reunite after the suspicious death of their father figure. From there, mayhem and chaos ensue, with visceral and brutal fight scenes aided by Tjahjantos skill with the camera and his sick sense of humor (complimentary).Tjahjanto is the rare filmmaker who lives up to the oft-used from the twisted mind of label. You likely already know whether or not The Big 4 is up your alley. Its certainly up mine. PVDay ShiftA loving throwback to 80s-era mid-budget action comedies, Day Shift is the debut of legendary stunt man, fight coordinator, and action director J.J. Perry. Jamie Foxx is Bud Jablonski, a down-on-his-luck vampire hunter trying to get back in the good graces of the Vampire Hunters Union. He needs a big score, fast, and teams up with an eclectic group including a hapless office worker (Dave Franco), an eccentric pair of vampire hunting brothers (Scott Adkins and Steve Howey), and an old friend (Snoop Dogg).Day Shift combines action, horror, and comedy in exciting ways, including an unconventional camera trick to make the vampires movement new and fresh. Foxxs leading-man charisma helps make up for some script inconsistencies, but the whole thing works because of the action sequences. Perrys one of the best in the business at that, and you get a sense of the kinetic energy flowing through this whole movie from the jump. PVRurouni Kenshin: The BeginningThough its the fifth and final installment of this live-action adaptation, you can still safely watch The Beginning first, as it is a prequel to the four movies that precede it (it does clue you into some parts of the story that are left a mystery in the previous movies, though). 50% origin story, 50% love story, and 110% kick-ass, The Beginning (and the rest of the Kenshin franchise) should be your first destination if youre looking for terrific swordplay on Netflix. PVLost Bullet and Lost Bullet 2Both Lost Bullet movies are pure jolts of adrenaline, filled with vehicular mayhem and explosive action. The first movie is leaner, with a simple premise executed to perfection, while the sequel ramps things up with even more jaw-dropping stunts, led by car stunt coordinator David Julienne, who also worked on the incredible Athena and is the grandson of the great Rmy Julienne. A third one is on the way, slated for a 2025 release. PVKill BoksoonAn expert mix of action thrills and domestic drama, Kill Boksoon follows an assassin who is at the top of her prestigious company of killers, but is pulled back home to her teenage daughter, who she barely knows. When a job goes wrong, Boksoon finds herself on the run, all while trying to keep her daughter safe. Its a simple enough setup, but Kill Boksoon excels due to its layered lead performance Jeon Do-yeon brings emotional depth and nuance to a difficult and complicated character and the attention to detail in its presentation. Filled with bright colors in the costuming and production design, Kill Boksoons action sequences soar without ignoring the sequences devoted to the domestic drama of Boksoon and her teenage daughter. With multiple standout fights, a cast of memorable characters, and efficient world-building for the movies hitman-centric economy, Kill Boksoon is one of Netflixs standout 2023 releases and the best action movie released on the platform so far this year. PVPsychokinesisYeon Sang-ho started his career in animation, before breaking out with the excellent 2016 zombie movie Train to Busan (no longer on Netflix, but its one of our favorite horror movies you can stream at home). Hes also made the great horror series Hellbound (on Netflix), but were here to talk about a project of his that went a little under the radar. PVAs Matt Patches put it in our list of great superhero movies that dont come from Marvel or DC:Psychokinesisfollows Shin, a bumbling, borderline-alcoholic security guard who drinks from a mountain spring recently contaminated by a meteorite and gains telekinetic powers. Ryu Seung-ryong is a joy as an oaf whos learning to control his abilities, just as his estranged daughter re-enters his life and sucks him into a real-estate-driven class war.Psychokinesisplays Shins fighting style for laughs, and while its not as cartoonish as Chinese director Stephen Chows genre hybrids, the movie can make the flying object mayhem both cheeky and thrilling. The political edge gives weight to Shins super-powered decisions, but Sang-ho never loses sight of why everyone showed up: to push the psychic conceit to bigger and bigger heights.Blood and BoneMichael Jai White is a treasure around these parts, and of the many excellent DTV action movies he has starred in, Blood and Bone may be the best. White is Isaiah Bone, an ex-marine martial artist recently out of prison, who meets an eccentric local fight promoter named Pinball (Dante Basco) and starts entering underground fights. When he falls deeper into the world of underground fighting, he learns just how far the powerful people who run the circuit will go to maintain their illegal business. With jaw-dropping fights featuring former professional fighters Bob Sapp, Kimbo Slice, and Matt Mullins, Blood and Bone is an appropriately stellar vehicle for White as a movie star and as a screen fighter. PVRRRPolygons favorite movie of 2022, RRR is an epic bromance for the ages filled to the brim with jaw-dropping action sequences, unforgettable music numbers, and two guys just being dudes. If you can, you should consider watching it in the original Telugu language version on Zee5. If you cant, the Hindi dub on Netflix is still well worth your time. PVThe Night Comes for UsThe only two ways The Night Comes for Us could be better are if (a) it were available on home video and (b) it had a sequel. Even so, Timo Tjahjantos bloody 2018 Indonesian action thriller inarguably stands as one of the best action films Netflix has to offer. The Night Comes for Us is an unrelentingly brutal martial arts thriller packed with scenes of breaking bones, gushing geysers of blood, and no less than three impalements. Joe Taslim (Mortal Kombat) and Iko Uwais (The Raid) star as Ito and Arian, two childhood friends and Triad enforcers who find themselves at odds when the former turns his back on his life as a killer to save a child. Thats not even mentioning Julie Estelles scene-stealing turn as The Operator, a mysterious covert agent who faces off against two assassins in one of the most spectacular fight scenes in a film with no shortage of them. Its a thrilling five-minute set-piece packed with brutal choreography, beautiful strobing light effects, a grisly garrote wire execution, and a tense one-on-one knife-fight finale. Toussaint EganThe Shadow StraysNearly six years after the release of The Night Comes for Us, Tjahjanto returned with another blistering martial arts crime thriller that confidently reasserts his place as one of his generations most prominent action directors. Aurora Ribero stars as 13, a teenage assassin trained from youth to serve a mysterious organization whose stock and trade is the killing of high-value targets. After failing to complete her latest mission, 13 is put on suspension and sent to Jakarta for psych retraining. After befriending Monji (Ali Fikri), a recently orphaned 11-year-old who is subsequently abducted by a ruthless crime lord, 13 embarks on a mission of vengeance to save the boy and redeem her own conscience. The Shadow Strays is an excellent spiritual follow-up to The Night Comes for Us, filled with brutal action sequences, dazzling fight choreography, and dark, brooding atmosphere. Heres hoping that Tjahjanto is given the opportunity to continue carving out his vision for this particular universe, but even barring that, its still an exceptional action thriller in and of itself. TESentinelleThis dark French revenge thriller follows a traumatized soldier (Olga Kurylenko) who returns home and seeks revenge on the men who assaulted her sister. Its a pretty standard (and dark) narrative structure, but it works because of the people behind it. Directed by Julien Leclercq, known for the excellent crime thriller The Crew and the outstanding series Ganglands (on Netflix!), Sentinelle thrives through Kurylenkos commanding lead performance, a lean 80-minute running time, and Leclercqs skill at filming action sequences especially close-quarters action, with a terrific bathroom fight and an unforgettable final kill. • Expand Your Notions of Lighting With Sorpresa by Samuel Wilkinson
    design-milk.com
We always love to see an easter egg in product design, and Samuel Wilkinson doesnt disappoint with his newest lighting solution a chandelier produced in collaboration with Danish brand Astep. Sorpresa utilizes a specific mechanism that, once released from its paper sheath, expands from just a couple inches to just over 43 inches at its finished size. Delicate limbs splay outwards on the top and bottom of the shade, the user watching the light take shape before their eyes. I wanted to create a piece that would intrigue. As its name suggests, the essence of the lamp is surprise. We looked at various collapsible objects for inspiration and found a traditional shaker wool winder. It was the low-tech expandable timber construction that I admired most, the simple movement and expression, says designer Samuel Wilkinson.A mostly opaque mesh shade hides the ghost of the sanded oak structure inside, criss-crossing arms keeping the shade tight. The showing but not telling is strong, allowing the user to bask in the setup rather than adding any frustration to the mix. Utilizing recycled and recyclable materials, each component of the Sorpresa chandelier is designed to come apart easily at the end of its life cycle to promote circular design. Interactive, delicate, and thoughtful, this mechanism holds promise for many other products in the future. With many shaded lighting solutions, well expect either a slightly cumbersome installation process or an unsightly shape, detracting from the scene rather than adding to it. All of these pain points are minimized if not completely eliminated with the lightweight Sorpresa system, allowing you to spend more time enjoying the glow. The intention was to give Sorpresa a strong yet subtle personality when both on and off. When off, the light source nearly disappears within the lamp but still revealing the distinctive frame, when on, the light source is presented like a floating orb in center of the volume with limited shadowing from the frame, Wilkinson says.Samuel Wilkinson is a London-based designer who creates work that balances form and function in a crisp, meaningful way. Sustainability is always at the forefront of his studios work, spanning multiple industries and creating cherished products along the way. You might be familiar with his work already, be it the LATIS Series, the Zymbel candelabra, or the TUBA Chair. As much about sustainability as usability as a certified B-corporation, Astep believes that enduring design is about designing it well in the first place. Alessandro Sarfatti evokes the words of his father, Gino Sarfatti: We must work in all directions, and in each one find a small amount of innovation my father used to say this, and he was right; because as long as we move forward, towards something thats more meaningful, more respectful and more relevant each step is as valuable as the other, deserving the same consideration and respect. This tells all about the ethos of the company, deriving great satisfaction by working closely with designers to produce whats new, with the distinction to keep said pieces timeless. To learn more about the Sorpresa Collection, visit astep.design.Photography courtesy of Samuel Wilkinson and Astep.

  • Julian Opies 10-Foot Pedestrians Are a Joyous Surprise
    design-milk.com
Julian Opies distinct artistic language is recognizable across the world whether in massive pubic sculpture, digital animations, or paint, his human figures always surprise with how much individuality is conveyed in such reduced forms. His newest work, on view now at Lisson Gallery in New York plays with scale, movement, and three different materials while also debuting a new series of work that is his first to depict children.Exhibition view of Julian Opie at Lisson, Gallery New York, 13 February 19 April 2025 Julian Opie, Courtesy Lisson GalleryThe center of the room hosts four massive aluminum sculptures, each approximately 10 feet tall. The works, all painted in high-gloss auto paint, are part of his Busan Walker Series that captures walkers along the seafront in Busan, Korea. Red Phone and Yellow Phone are stand-outs that capture phone-facing pedestrians as they walk without breaking stride.Exhibition view of Julian Opie at Lisson, Gallery New York, 13 February 19 April 2025 Julian Opie, Courtesy Lisson GalleryJulian Opie, Yellow phone, 2023 Julian Opie, Courtesy Lisson GalleryMuch of the joy comes from the juxtaposition of art and real people. I took a selfie with the goal of demonstrating the unexpected large scale of all the works here (below), and as I was checking the image on my phone, I realized that my own phone-viewing silhouette matched those of the sculptures prompting a smile from another visitor who just entered the gallery. Its a reminder (and a recommendation) that this exhibition and all of Opies work gets better when shared with strangers. The work is about people, both within the work and surrounding it.Julian Opie, Reception B. (Junior Kindergarten B), 2024, with author. My favorite works are Opies first depictions of children, here reaching 13 feet tall on the wall. Created from hand-painted resin that resembles stone, each of the three large works depicts a different age/grade level: Kindergarten (pictured above), First Grade (with the green background), and Third Grade (brown background). It may take a minute to spot the age difference between each work since each group is scaled to the same height inviting you to compare clothing, stride, and proportion from one work to the next.Step closer and the work visually breaks into pure abstraction. The black outlines are deeply recessed, causing you to lose the image and see only depth and material.Julian Opie, Reception B. In a previous exhibition, the skylights were used to create a real rainbow, and here that very specific angle and quality of light gives each of these reliefs a sense that youre viewing them in a cave or ancient temple.Julian Opie, Year 4 A. Here they walk in the same direction and never leave the frame, as if each is on an invisible treadmill. The bright LEDs pixels give the works an extremely crisp presentation in person. And though theres a great video of the exhibition (below) produced by the gallery, the digital works too must be seen in person. It can be a hypnotic experience to watch the unique walking styles and different step speeds in combination, falling in and out of sync to create a strange poly-rhythm that can hold you to the work for several minutes.Exhibition view of Julian Opie at Lisson, Gallery New York, 13 February 19 April 2025 Julian Opie, Courtesy Lisson GalleryJulian Opie Reception.
