• Joseph Story House // 1811
    buildingsofnewengland.com
Built in 1811 for Joseph Story, lawyer, politician, and judge of the United States Supreme Court, this stately brick residence on Winter Street in Salem, Massachusetts, is significant, not only for its architecture, but for its esteemed owners. Judge Joseph Story (1779-1845), who was then Speaker of the House of Massachusetts in 1810, purchased this house lot near the Salem Common, and proceeded to have this three-story brick house constructed. By the time it was finished, Story had been appointed by President Madison to the bench of the United States Supreme Court. He was just 32-years-old when nominated to the bench. The house is also the birthplace in 1819 of Storys sonWilliam Wetmore Story, a well-known sculptor. Judge Story would reside here until 1829, when he moved to Cambridge in order to pursue his work at the new Harvard Law School. The property was sold in 1831 to Robert Upton (1788-1863), a self-made merchant heavily engaged with trade in South America. Robert Upton and his sons were among the most important men in Salem in the 1830s-1850s, for they were able to maintain a successful foreign commerce, and keep ships and men employed, at a time when Salem was otherwise fading as a seaport. The house has been lovingly maintained by centuries of stewards, and the house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

All images Mandy Barker, courtesy of the author and GOST, shared with permissionMandy Barkers Cyanotypes Revive a Pioneering Botanists Book to Warn About Synthetic DebrisMarch 18, 2025Kate MothesIn 2012, I found a piece of material in a rock pool that changed my life, artist Mandy Barker says. Mistaking this moving piece of cloth for seaweed started the recovery of synthetic clothing from around the coastline of Britain for the next ten years.Barker is known for her photographic practice that takes a deep dive into marine debris. Her work has been featured in publications like National Geographic, The Guardian, VOGUE, and many more. Often collaborating with scientists to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the earths oceans, she eloquently highlights its harmful impacts on marine habitats, wildlife, and all of us who depend on the ocean for sustenance.Patterned blouse (Laminaria materia)Forthcoming from GOST Books, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections surveys the unexpected and out-of-place along British shores. At first glance, each specimen appears like a fragment of a leaf or a scatter of organic material, but upon closer inspection, the subjects of Barkers images reveal details of unraveled polyester or scraps of nylon tights.Barker hopes to raise awareness of the damaging effects of fast fashion, synthetic clothing, and the increasing amounts of microfibers in the oceans. The fashion industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and container ships combined and is also the second-largest consumer of water, requiring about 2,000 gallons of water to produce a single pair of jeans.Barkers new book is composed as an homage to the work of trailblazing botanist and photographer Anna Atkins (1799-1871), who is thought to be the first woman to take a photograph and the first person to publish a book containing photographic illustrations. Her 1843 study, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, employed blue photograms to illustrate photosynthetic organisms and seaweeds.Barkers work serves as a kind of sibling or sequel to Atkins pioneering publication, presented in a similar style with handwritten names in Latin beneath each specimen.Coat lining (Dichloria vestis)In their updated versions, the titles take Atkins scientific names as a starting point and tweak them just slightly to conjure references to clothing or the human body. In the plate titled Dichloris vestis, for example, Barker draws on a real type of algae Atkins catalogued, Dichloria viridis, but vestis is instead a tongue-in-cheek reference to outerwear, often made of polyester or other synthetic materials. Conferva tibia, which portrays frayed tights, employs the Latin word for leg. From John o Groats at the northernmost tip of Great Britain to Lands End at its southernmost, Barker recovered specimens of clothing from more than 120 beaches. Her finds, ranging from parkas to wigs to sports jerseys, were pulled from the sand, tide pools, or directly from the sea. In Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections, Barker looks to the past to better understand how our actions in the present have both immediate impacts and will shape the future of the climate crisis.Find your copy on GOSTs online store, where signed editions are also available, and explore more of Barkers work on her website and Instagram.Nylon tights (Conferva tibia)Shawl (Odonthalia amiculum), shown on a spread from Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections by Mandy BarkerJacket lining (Rhodomenia ignotus)Fishnet tights (Chylocladia funda)Two Blouses (Asperococcus indusium)Synthetic fur hood (Myrionema Palliolum)Lining (with algae) (Grateloupia intra)Next article

  • The temptations and risks of free Wi-Fi
    www.foxnews.com
Published March 18, 2025 10:00am EDT close Windows bug leaves computer Wi-Fi vulnerable to hackers Kurt "Cyberguy" Knutsson explains how to keep your Windows computer safe and discusses the security risks of online retail giant Temu. Public Wi-Fi is everywhere and incredibly convenient, but is it safe to use? Keep reading to explore the risks of using public Wi-Fi and how a VPN can help protect your privacy while browsing on the go. Illustration of Wi-Fi icon (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Risks of using public Wi-FiHackers sometimes try to trick you into connecting to a network labeled "FREE Wi-Fi." Heres what you need to know about the potential dangers of public Wi-Fi.Unencrypted networksMany public Wi-Fi networks are unencrypted, meaning the data transmitted over them is not secured. This makes it easy for cybercriminals with the right tools to intercept your online activities, including sensitive information like login details, banking data and personal messages.Malware threatsConnecting to public Wi-Fi can expose you to malware attacks. Malicious actors on the same network can take advantage of security flaws on your device to install harmful software. Some examples arespyware that steals your personal information orransomware that locks your system or turns your device into a bot for a distributed denial-of-service attack.Man-in-the-middle attacksA man-in-the-middle attack occurs when an attacker secretly intercepts communication between two parties, like a user and an app. This allows them to listen in on or alter conversations. On unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, attackers can more easily capture data packets. This potentially gives them access to sensitive information like login credentials, credit card details or private messages. In some cases, they may even modify the data, leading to fraud or data breaches.Signs of an unsafe networkHackers often take advantage of public Wi-Fi, but some may go a step further and create fake hot spots under their control. To help you steer clear of these traps, here are some common signs of a rogue Wi-Fi network. The network name resembles a trusted one: Hackers sometimes set up fraudulent networks that mimic legitimate ones. For example, you might see duplicate network names or be connected to a "home network" when you're far from home."HTTPS" sites appear as "HTTP":If you're trying to access a secure website and notice its loading as an "HTTP" site instead of "HTTPS," you may be connected to a fake Wi-Fi hot spot. The name is generic: Rogue networks often appear in busy areas with vague names like "Free Wi-Fi" to attract unsuspecting users. Legitimate public networks, like those in cafs, usually have more specific names tied to the business.Unusual behavior: If you experience strange pop-ups, ads, frequent Wi-Fi disconnections or slow speeds, the network youre connected to could be compromised. To minimize the risk, disconnect immediately and run amalware scan. Now that you're aware of the risks and how to recognize an unsafe Wi-Fi network, you can browse more securely. Illustration of a hacker (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Where to find legitimate free Wi-FiIf you're looking for reliable spots to access free Wi-Fi, these are some great options.WiFi MapWiFi Map has pinpointed millions of free Wi-Fi locations across more than 200 countries. Their website displays nearby free Wi-Fi locations by city on an interactive map. Clicking on a spot will reveal the address, the Wi-Fi hot spot name and any required passwords. Theres also a mobile app available, which is especially handy for accessing passwords. Plus, the app offers an offline map feature, so you can search for hot spots without needing a connection.Your local libraryMany libraries offer free Wi-Fi in addition to computer access. Bring your own device to enjoy internet access at no cost. Check your local librarys website or give them a call to confirm if they provide free Wi-Fi and learn about any connection requirements. While some libraries offer open access, others may ask for a password or require a library card number.Wi-Fi-FreeSpot DirectoryTheWi-Fi-FreeSpot Directory helps you locate free Wi-Fi hot spots in the U.S., Canada, Asia, the Middle East and more. You can search by region, state or country and even narrow your search to specific types of locations, such as hotels, airports, coffee shops or vacation rentals that provide free Wi-Fi.6 ways to protect your devices for secure public Wi-Fi usePublic Wi-Fi is everywhere, from your favorite coffee shop to the airport. But while it's convenient, it also comes with some risks, as we mentioned above. Here are six essential tips to help keep your devices and data safe when you're browsing on public networks.1) Use a VPN:Accessing the internet in public places, like coffee shops, can put your personal data at risk. AVPN (virtual private network) ensures that your connection is secure and that your information is encrypted. Using a VPN is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your privacy when browsing on public Wi-Fi. It creates a private, encrypted tunnel for your data, protecting you from potential cyber threats. VPN on an iPhone (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)2) Have strong antivirus software:Cybercriminals often exploit the vulnerabilities of public Wi-Fi to distribute malware or intercept sensitive data, making it crucial to protect your devices against such threats. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.3) Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable2FA on your accounts to add an extra layer of security, even if someone manages to intercept your password.4) Set strong passwords: Use complex, unique passwords for each of your online accounts. Get more details about mybest expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 here.5) Keep software updated: Ensure your operating system, applications and security software areup to date to patch known vulnerabilities.6) Avoid sensitive transactions: Refrain from accessing sensitive information or making financial transactions while on public Wi-Fi.Kurts key takeawaysFinding free Wi-Fi is easy, but its important to watch out for security risks. Services like WiFi Map, local libraries and Wi-Fi-FreeSpot can help you find safe hot spots. • Whats Going On With Severance Season 3?
    www.forbes.com
SeveranceApple TV+Severance season 2 is about to air its finale, and hopefully once that happens, we will not have to wait as long for season 3 to get here.If it gets here. There are some odd conflicting news items about season 3 of the show to point where Ive talked about it in the past as happening, but Apple PR emailed me specifically to remind me that no, Severance season 3 has not been officially announced and greenlit. While I noted that, I also replied that Ben Stiller has been talking openly about season 3 spooling up, saying theres a writers room in LA working on it and promising there wont be a three year gap this time. There is an additional, unconfirmed report about new showrunners that just went out for season 3, but the sourcing on that seems nebulous at this point, and I wouldnt consider that a firm news item. Stiller quotes, on the other hand, Im taking as gospel. It is not uncommon to wait for a show to air before announcing that another season is coming. Though at a reported $20 million and episode, and Apple previously saying they were going to spend less on original content, maybe thats giving them pause. And we have seen Apple greenlight new seasons of shows before the current one ends, like with Slow Horses, where that has happened multiple times.SeveranceAppleIm not worried. At all. Severance is easily the most popular show on Apple TV and a major driver of media conversation in a way we havent seen with weekly airings of shows in a very long time. as fans try to unravel its various mysteries. This season, Severance became the most-watched series in Apple history, before it even finished season 2, passing up all three seasons of Ted Lasso (now, a fourth is coming). And at the time, Apple had this to say:We have long admired Bens extraordinary gift for original and immersive storytelling, and with he and Dan at the helm, Severance has proven to be an extraordinary success and a cultural phenomenon, said Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+. The series has become an obsession for audiences all over the world and we cant wait for people to continue to experience all the masterful twists and turns as the rest of the season unfolds. So, Im going to say theres a 100% chance that Severance season 3 will happen, even if Apple, for whatever reason, doesnt feel like confirming that just yet. Once the finale airs, I expect well hear about a renewal in short order.Follow me , and .Pick up my sci-fi novels the and

  • Pharmacy Benefit Manager Reform Keeps Getting Scuttled, Despite Bipartisan Support
    www.forbes.com
Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Mass., has been one of several lawmakers introducing bills designed to ... [+] tackle "manipulative" business practices of pharmacy benefit managers. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)Copyright 2023 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.Despite bipartisan support, a last-ditch effort to pass a healthcare package that included pharmacy benefit manager reforms was scuttled last week. This marks the umpteenth time that lawmakers couldnt cross the threshold to pass and enact changes to how PBMs do business. Its not for lack of congressional hearings on PBM reform over the years, or the introduction of numerous bills that include provisions directed at potentially anti-competitive practices. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree that changes are needed. The legislative initiatives center around issues such as spread pricing, which is a practice where PBMs charge health plans or employers a higher price for medications than what they pay to pharmacies, keeping the difference (spread) as profit. Bills also target lack of transparency, particularly regarding proprietary rebates negotiated between PBMs and drug makers. Moreover, proposals take aim at conflicts of interest when PBMs steer patients to affiliated pharmacies or limit access to the cheapest biosimilar medications in favor of private label alternatives manufactured by PBM subsidiaries. There was a bipartisan agreement last December to include several key PBM reforms in a sweeping healthcare package into a so-called continuing resolution, which is a temporary spending bill that allows federal government operations to continue when final funding appropriations have not yet been approved by Congress and the President.Besides addressing changes to the methods by which PBMs operate, the CR would have included a series of other policy measures, such as extensions of Medicare telehealth flexibilities, reauthorizations of legislation to prevent pandemics and address the opioid crisis, as well as add-on payments to community health centers and a rollback of Medicare physician payment cuts. But Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson pulled PBM reforms and other changes from the CR, under apparent pressure from then President-elect Donald Trump and current de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk. This month, Senate Democrats laid the groundwork to pass a major bipartisan, bicameral healthcare policy package that failed to make it in December. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) brought the proposal to the floor, trying to pass it by unanimous consent, which means that no member objects. But their attempt was blocked Friday, Mar. 14th, as Senator Rick Scott of Florida objected without, however, offering a reason. What Are PBMs And What Do They Do?To most lay people, the acronym PBM means nothing. But PBMs serve as key intermediaries at the center of the complex and often opaque United States pharmaceutical distribution chain. They manage the prescription drug benefitthe portion of insurance that involves pharmaceutical carefor around 275 million Americans. In this context, PBMs negotiate the net prices of prescription drugs and the terms and conditions for patient access.Following a series of recent mergers and acquisitions, the leading PBMs are now each part of healthcare behemoths that also include health insurers, pharmacies and healthcare provider services. The three largest PBMs which control 80% of the U.S. prescription drug market are OptumRx, Express Scripts, and CVS Caremark. Due to their size and the manner in which vertical integration has rolled multiple entities in the drug supply chain into one conglomerate, PBMs have considerable control over which drugs are available to patients, at what price and where patients can access them.A focal point of policy discussions has been the role of rebates in supposedly driving up list prices and therefore patient cost-sharing. Rebates are payments from drug manufacturers to PBMs in exchange for moving market share toward products with preferred positioning on formularies or lists of covered medications. When a patient fills a prescription for a drug that carries a rebate, the pharmaceutical manufacturer remits an amount to the PBM, according to terms laid out in the contract. Subsequently, the PBM passes through part of the rebate to the patients plan sponsor, while keeping a portion as profit. PBMs can pass through up to 100% of these payments to those with whom they contract. The percentage of pass-through depends on the parameters of the signed agreements between PBMs and contractors. From a drug makers perspective, rebates can function as a way to boost or maintain market share for products. Accordingly, PBMs can do a number of things to help ensure certain drugs get sufficient volume uptake. Their main tool for this purpose is placing a rebated product in a preferred spot on the formulary. And so, rebates can mutually benefit PBMs and the manufacturers of the drugs that are given preferred positioning. Further, rebates can help to mitigate increases in beneficiary premiums by lowering net costs for health plans, employers and other clients for whom PBMs work. But while rebates may help PBMs, health plans and employers financially, they are not directly passed through to patients at the pharmacy counter. Additionally, patients out-of-pocket costs are often calculated based on percentages of list prices that are often substantially higher than net prices.PBMs may favor higher list-priced products in certain instances because of the greater rebates attached to them. This is because the rebate portion retained by PBMs is often calculated as a percentage of a drugs list price.Defenders of PBMs say their role as intermediaries is indispensable as they work at the behest of employers and health plans to lower net prescription drug costs. UnitedHealths OptumRx told Fortune that it helped patients save $1.3 billion in out-of-pocket costs. Also, the PBM trade group, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association defends PBMs use of their own specialty pharmacies, saying that they are less expensive than other pharmacies. And all the focus on PBMs may let plan sponsors and drug manufacturers off the hook. After all, PBMs work on behalf of employers and health plans. And ultimately pharmaceutical pricing is the result of negotiations between two parties, drug makers and PBMs. To illustrate how this can serve interests of both stakeholders in ways that dont necessarily help out patients, consider how manufacturers can avoid competition from lower-cost rivals by switching to reformulated versions of their original product via product hopping. PBMs may facilitate this process by promoting uptake of new formulations when they give preferential placement on formulary to such products.Failure to include PBM reform in the end-of-year CR as well as the latest draft proposal may be a sign of political fracturing among lawmakers in 2025 and the difficulties of breaking the impasse.Going forward, rather than pursuing legislation that may seem too comprehensive if it covers too much territory, perhaps lawmakers with stand-alone proposals focused on PBMs have a better chance. For instance, Earl Buddy Carter (R-GA), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) and Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) introduced the Protecting Patients Against PBM Abuses Act aimed at delinking PBM compensation from the list prices of medications, which presumably would remove the incentive for PBMs them to drive up prices. The bill also seeks to increase transparency and address conflicts of interest. To date, PBMs have evaded reform efforts. Well have to see what the future will bring.

  • Vietnam wants to compete with Taiwan by establishing its first wafer fab
    www.techspot.com
In brief: The Vietnamese government has just approved the construction of the country's first-ever wafer fabrication plant. It's an ambitious project with a total investment of VND 12.8 trillion (~$500 million), and construction is expected to be completed before 2030. But it doesn't end there. The country also aims to become one of the world's leading semiconductor nations between 2040 and 2050. TrendForce reports that the facility will focus on producing specialized chips for high-tech applications like AI, defense tech, and more. It has some serious financial backing as well, with the local government pledging to cover up to 30% of the cost, plus tax incentives. A special steering committee led by Vietnam's Prime Minister will also oversee everything. This push shouldn't come as a total surprise. Over the last couple of years, Vietnam has actively engaged in negotiations and discussions with major chip companies from the US, South Korea, Taiwan, and other leading semiconductor nations. Closed-door talks took place with prominent players like GlobalFoundries and Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor, though no deals have been made public yet. However, the master plan extends far beyond this project. Last year, the Prime Minister signed off on Vietnam's semiconductor strategy through 2050. It's an ambitious one, divided into three phases.Phase 1 calls for establishing at least 100 chip design companies, one manufacturing plant, and 10 packaging/testing facilities by 2030. Phase 2 will expand that footprint massively to 200 design firms, two fabs, and 15 packaging/testing sites in the 2030-2040 timeframe. Finally, Phase 3 aims to increase these numbers to 300 design houses, three manufacturing plants, 20 packaging/testing facilities, and achieve revenue targets exceeding $100 billion annually by 2050.Achieving these targets won't be easy. Industry insiders have pointed out that building an advanced chip fab can cost $50 billion or more making Vietnam's $500 million budget seem like pocket change. The head of the US Semiconductor Industry Association even recommended Vietnam focus on low-hanging fruit like chip packaging first, before attempting advanced manufacturing. // Related StoriesHowever, Vietnam appears intent on an accelerated approach and is reportedly aiming to leverage foreign investment and partnerships with domestic tech companies like Viettel. It will use these to rapidly scale up its semiconductor capabilities across the entire supply chain. The country already hosts nearly 175 foreign semiconductor projects, collectively worth almost $12 billion, even as they are primarily focused on the packaging and testing segments.

  • Razer Blade 16 pricing leaks: $2,000 for RTX 5060 model
    www.techspot.com
In brief: Razer has long had a reputation for making sleek, stylish, and expensive laptops, something that appears especially apparent in the Blade 16. Despite packing the (still unreleased) mid-range RTX 5060, it will reportedly be priced at $2,000. It's worth remembering that when consumer Blackwell was announced in January, Nvidia said the starting price for laptops with the RTX 5070 GPU would be $1,299. We're still waiting for both the desktop and laptop versions of the RTX 5060 to arrive, though they are rumored to launch either late in March or in April. In February, Razer announced the latest version of its desktop-replacement Blade 18 gaming laptop, which can be specced up to an RTX 5090. Now, prolific leaker momomo_us has posted a spec chart for the Blade 16.As the image shows, the cheapest version of the laptop comes with an RTX 5060 and a Ryzen AI 9 365 CPU, but this will still set you back $1,999.Prices scale rapidly based on the included GPU: $2,399 for an RTX 5070, $2,599 for an RTX 5070 Ti, $2,999/$3,299 for a 5080, and $3,799 for the RTX 5090. There is a final column for the 5090 with a listed price of $1,499, but this is obviously an error. This top specification includes 4TB of M.2 storage and 64GB of LPDDR5X memory, so the correct price could be $4,499.While Razer Blade laptops are notoriously expensive, the prices are far above the starting prices that Nvidia announced for its RTX 50-series laptop GPUs. Razer will likely point to features such as the 240Hz OLED display, but consumers are unlikely to see past the fact it's $2,000 for a 16-inch RTX 5060 laptop when there are similar RTX 4070 laptops for around $500 less. // Related StoriesIn fairness to Razer, many other RTX 5000 laptops from big companies carry similar price tags. The RTX 5080-powered MSI Stealth, which has a screen comparable to the Blade, is $3,399, while the Asus ROG Strix is $3,299. Newegg lists many of these laptops with a March 31 release date, while others are arriving in mid-April. There are no listings for machines with the RTX 5060, though.
