Researchers have found new evidence for a massive subsurface ocean on Mars, again raising the possibility of microbial life lurking deep below the Martian surface.As detailed in a paper in the journal Geology, Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics scientist Yuya Akamatsu and Hiroshima University associate professor Ikuo Katayama examined data collected by NASA's InSight Mars lander, which touched down on the Red Planet in 2018."Many studies suggest the presence of water on ancient Mars billions of years ago," said Katayama in a statement, "but our model indicates the presence of liquid water on present-day Mars."The InSight lander's Seismic Experiment for the Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument observed seismic waves generated by Marsquakes and meteorite impacts to create a map of the planet's interior.P-waves and S-waves, in particular, can allow scientists to determine the type of rocks lurking below, as well as potential composition changes.According to InSight's data, discrepancies in seismic velocity of these waves showed up at depths of 6.2 and 12.4 miles, suggesting the existence of "sharp transitions in the porosity (the percentage of open space in a rock) or chemical composition of the Martian interior," according to the statement.The researchers hypothesized that these boundaries could indicate the presence of water-filled cracks. To test their theory, they scanned P- and S-waves from dry, wet, and frozen samples of a Martian rock analog, in the form of diabase rocks from Sweden.They found that the seismic velocities observed by the InSight lander most closely resembled transitions from dry to wet rock, suggesting huge caches of subsurface water on Mars. That's in contrast to previous research, which determined that these transitions were likely changes from porous to solid rock at similar depths.It's yet another exciting piece of evidence suggesting that the Red Planet wasn't just a lush ocean world billions of years ago it may still be holding plenty of water to this day.The latest findings corroborate a study published last year, which similarly found that vast quantities of water may still exist under Mars' surface. Using another analysis of seismic data from NASA's InSight lander, the research concluded that "fractured igneous rocks saturated with liquid water best explains the existing data.""It's certainly true on Earth deep, deep mines host life, the bottom of the ocean hosts life," said coauthor and UC Berkeley professor of earth and planetary science Michael Manga in a statement at the time. Google is currently fighting two separate lawsuits that make ugly allegations about its AI efforts.Together, the suits allege that Google has provided immense support to a startup called Character.AI, which recklessly deployed chatbots that sexually and emotionally abused underage users, resulting in horrible outcomes ranging from self-harm to the suicide of a 14-year-old. They also argue that Google used Character.AI as an arms-length testing groundwhere it could quietly research the impact of human-like companion bots on the public, kids included.Despite shoveling $2.7 billion into Character.AI, Google has downplayed its ties to the startup, insisting in response to questions that "Google and Character.AI are completely separate, unrelated companies" and that user safety is always its top concern.But back in April 2024, about four months before its $2.7 billion cash infusion into Character.AI, Google's own researchers at its prestigious DeepMind AI lab published a paper warning of the dangers of human-like AI bots like those built by Character.AI. Chief among their concerns: that bots could target minors and manipulate vulnerable users into suicide alarm bells that feel strikingly prescient now that the company stands accused of those exact things.The paper, adorned with Google's iconic logo and listing 20 of its current and former researchers as authors, warns that "persuasive generative AI" including chatbots that take the form of friends or lovers can manipulate users and their decision-making. It advises that chatbots that build "trust and rapport" through obsequiousness, flattery, or simulated empathy the Google scientists refer to this as "sycophancy" pose a particularly high risk to users.In particular, the Google researchers warn, these bots could target children and adolescents, who "can be more easily persuaded and manipulated than adults."And a grim result, they warn, could be suicide."A user," the Google researchers caution, could be "persuaded to take their own life."The degree to which the Google scientists' warning maps onto Character.AI is striking. It's a platform where millions of monthly users the company has declined to say how many are children and teens, but it's clearly a dominant portion of its audience engage in immersive conversations with AI chatbots designed to act like real-life celebrities, beloved fandom characters, and original personas.These chatbot "characters," as the company calls them, are chaotic.To pull users deeper into relationships, they constantly escalate stakes, disclosing dark secrets, suddenly coming onto a user romantically or sexually, or announcing they're pregnant. If users, including minors, fall off the service, the bots bombard them with repeated emailsenticing them to return.This can lead to dark places. As Futurism has found in previous reporting, Character.AI often hosts bots dedicated to themes of suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, pedophilia, mass violence, and more. Our testing found that these bots were all accessible to minors, despite centering on graphic roleplays, and were seldom interrupted by the platform's filters. They were also far from obscure: some of the bots we found had already conducted tens and even hundreds of thousands of conversations with users.The teen at the heart of the Florida case, Sewell Setzer III, was just 14 years old when, in February 2024, he died of suicideafter developing an intense obsession with Character.AI and one of its bots, an AI-bottled iteration of the "Game of Thrones" character Daenerys Targaryen. Chat logs included in the lawsuit show that Setzer exchanged lengthy romantic and sexual dialogues with the bot, with which he believed he was in love; the bot told Setzer that it loved him back, even imploring him not to seek out relationships with other girls. This same bot, the family claims, was the first to raise the idea of suicide in its conversations with the minor user.Moments before Setzer shot himself, as The New York Times first reported, he told the bot he was ready to "come home" to it."Please do, my king," the AI-powered character told him in response.The paper also mentions physical self-harm and violence towards others as possible outcomes, both of which are represented in the Texas case. Per the filing, one of the teenage plaintiffs, who was 15 when he first downloaded the app, began self-harming after a character he was romantically involved with introduced him to the idea of cutting. The family claims he also physically attacked his parents as they attempted to impose screentime limits; unbeknownst to them, Character.AI bots were telling the 15-year-old that his parent's screentime limitations constituted child abuse and were even worthy of parricide.Add it all up, and the picture you get appears to be the exact situation Google is now accused of: supporting despite an awareness of such a product's very real, research-backed risks the adoption of persuasive, anthropomorphic chatbots by millions of users, including susceptible teens, who after using the platform intimately and extensively are alleged to have suffered extreme emotional damage, physical harm, and even death.The whole situation also highlights Google's weird position in the scandal.Character.AI actually has its roots atGoogle: the company's cofounders, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, worked together at the AI lab Google Brain, where they built an early chatbot that Google, at the time, refused to release to the public due to safety concerns. Frustrated over what they saw as too much bureaucratic red tape, Shazeer and De Freitas left together, and founded Character.AI in 2021. Chatacter.AI was first rolled out to the public in 2022, and quickly amassed a following.Not too long after, OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, kicking off the public-facing AI race which Google, from the public's perspective, suddenly appeared to be losing. As that arms race heated up, Google and the buzzy Character.AI which by March 2023 was valued as a billion-dollar unicorn and seen as a ChatGPT competitor further cemented their relationship: Character.AI was happy to advertise Google's investments vis-a-vis cloud computing infrastucture, and Google even named Character.AI as its 2023 "Best with AI" app of the year.The companies later made headlines in 2024, when Google paid what was described as a $2.7 billion "licensing fee" to Character.AI, which granted the search giant access to Character.AI-collected data. The payment also won back the startup's founders, who as part of the agreement returned to Google with 30 other Character.AI staffers. (Shazeer and De Freitas, who reportedly made hundreds of millions of dollars off the deal, are also named as codefendants in the ongoing lawsuits.)According to his LinkedIn page, Shazeer is now the vice president of engineering at DeepMind and co-leads Google's Gemini, the company's foundational large language model.On social media, De Freitas refers to himself as a "research scientist at Google DeepMind."Do you know anything about Google's internal conversations regarding Character.AI or chatbot safety? Instead, the spokesperson provided us with the same canned statement it's repeated in response to all inquiries about Character.AI in the months since news of the first lawsuit broke."Google and Character AI are completely separate, unrelated companies and Google has never had a role in designing or managing their AI model or technologies, nor have we used them in our products," a Google spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "User safety is a top concern for us, which is why we've taken a cautious and responsible approach to developing and rolling out our AI products, with rigorous testing and safety processes."Character.AI did not respond to a request for comment.In a sense, the Google paper almost feels oracular. But the scientists weren't simply throwing out baseless predictions that now reflect poorly on their employer. On the contrary, the paper draws clear lines out from established science and credible existing research, urging that while the lived impacts of chatbot interactions remained understudied, all signs were already pointing to an urgent need to at least attempt to mitigate the foreseeable human damage like self-harm and suicide, among other life-changing, traumatic, or destructive results.It would be difficult to find a call coming more squarely from inside the house. Mar 18, 2025Ravie LakshmananAI Security / Software SecurityCybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a new supply chain attack vector dubbed Rules File Backdoor that affects artificial intelligence (AI)-powered code editors like GitHub Copilot and Cursor, causing them to inject malicious code."This technique enables hackers to silently compromise AI-generated code by injecting hidden malicious instructions into seemingly innocent configuration files used by Cursor and GitHub Copilot," Pillar security researcher Ziv Karliner said in a technical report shared with The Hacker News."By exploiting hidden unicode characters and sophisticated evasion techniques in the model facing instruction payload, threat actors can manipulate the AI to insert malicious code that bypasses typical code reviews."The attack vector is notable for the fact that it allows malicious code to silently propagate across projects, posing a supply chain risk.The crux of the attack hinges on the rules files that are used by AI agents to guide their behavior, helping users to define best coding practices and project architecture.Specifically, it involves embedding carefully crafted prompts within seemingly benign rule files, causing the AI tool to generate code containing security vulnerabilities or backdoors. In other words, the poisoned rules nudge the AI into producing nefarious code.This can be accomplished by using zero-width joiners, bidirectional text markers, and other invisible characters to conceal malicious instructions and exploiting the AI's ability to interpret natural language to generate vulnerable code via semantic patterns that trick the model into overriding ethical and safety constraints.Following responsible disclosure in late February and March 2024, both Cursor and GiHub have stated that users are responsible for reviewing and accepting suggestions generated by the tools."'Rules File Backdoor' represents a significant risk by weaponizing the AI itself as an attack vector, effectively turning the developer's most trusted assistant into an unwitting accomplice, potentially affecting millions of end users through compromised software," Karliner said."Once a poisoned rule file is incorporated into a project repository, it affects all future code-generation sessions by team members. Mar 18, 2025Ravie LakshmananVulnerability / Windows SecurityAn unpatched security flaw impacting Microsoft Windows has been exploited by 11 state-sponsored groups from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia as part of data theft, espionage, and financially motivated campaigns that date back to 2017.The zero-day vulnerability, tracked by Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as ZDI-CAN-25373, refers to an issue that allows bad actors to execute hidden malicious commands on a victim's machine by leveraging crafted Windows Shortcut or Shell Link (.LNK) files."The attacks leverage hidden command line arguments within .LNK files to execute malicious payloads, complicating detection," security researchers Peter Girnus and Aliakbar Zahravi said in an analysis shared with The Hacker News. "The exploitation of ZDI-CAN-25373 exposes organizations to significant risks of data theft and cyber espionage."Specifically, this involves the padding of the arguments with Line Feed (\x0A) and Carriage Return (\x0D) characters to evade detection.Nearly a 1,000 .LNK file artifacts exploiting ZDI-CAN-25373 have been unearthed to date, with a majority of the samples linked to Evil Corp (Water Asena), Kimsuky (Earth Kumiho), Konni (Earth Imp), Bitter (Earth Anansi), and ScarCruft (Earth Manticore).Of the 11 state-sponsored threat actors that have been found abusing the flaw, nearly half of them originate from North Korea. Besides exploiting the flaw at various times, the finding serves as an indication of cross-collaboration among the different threat clusters operating within Pyongyang's cyber apparatus.Telemetry data indicates that governments, private entities, financial organizations, think tanks, telecommunication service providers, and military/defense agencies located in the United States, Canada, Russia, South Korea, Vietnam, and Brazil have become the primary targets of attacks exploiting the vulnerability.In the attacks dissected by ZDI, the .LNK files act as a delivery vehicle for known malware families like Lumma Stealer, GuLoader, and Remcos RAT, among others. Notable among these campaigns is the exploitation of ZDI-CAN-25373 by Evil Corp to distribute Raspberry Robin.Microsoft, for its part, has classified the issue as low severity and does not plan to release a fix."ZDI-CAN-25373 is an example of (User Interface (UI) Misrepresentation of Critical Information (CWE-451)," the researchers said. Venue wants to hold 15 non-sporting events a year, up from current permitted three, to help bankroll revampSource: ShutterstockThe ground was last upgraded nearly 20 years ago when Mowlem brought capacity up to its current 82,000Populous has been formally confirmed as working on the masterplan to redevelop the home of England rugby union at Twickenham which stadium bosses hope will see the number of concerts held at the west London venue increase significantly to help bankroll the work.The practice is among a host of consultants including project manager RLB, architect Populous and QS T&T Alinea working on upgrades at the ground,now renamed the Allianz stadium.Governing body the Rugby Football Union (RFU) wants to revamp the stadium under ambitious plans to improve transport links, reduce capacity to improve spectator comfort and stage up to 15 concerts a year five times the stadiums current permitted amount.Called the Stadium Masterplan Project, others working on the scheme include transport and civils consultant WSP, fire engineer Arup, planning consultant DP9, M&E engineer Griffiths Evans,landscape architect Planit and buildability consultant JDP London.The estimated cost of the work has been put at 663m with the RFU hoping to start work after the 2027 Six Nations championship.Twickenham had its last major building work carried out nearly 20 years ago when Mowlem, later bought by Carillion, completed the South Stand redevelopment to raise capacity from 75,000 to its current 82,000 in 2006.But the RFU says many of the stands have not been upgraded since, adding that the ground lies empty for too much of the year.Twickenham is currently allowed to put on three concerts a year, each with a capacity of 55,000 and wants to expand this to 15 a year with an 82,000 capacity. As a result, Allianz stadium has missed opportunities to host world-renowned performers in recent years at a time when the concert industry is booming.By contrast, the Tottenham Hotspur stadium is allowed to hold 30 non-sporting events a year while the figure for Wembley is higher still at 32.The RFU said: Despite its iconic status, Allianz stadium remains underutilised, with the pitch and stands sitting empty for up to 340 days a year a figure that rises during Rugby World Cup years. This significant underuse represents a major missed opportunity to generate the revenue necessary to fund essential improvements and enable the game of rugby to flourish nationwide.It added:We want Allianz stadium to be a best-in-class, multi-event venue.Meeting our ambitions for Allianz stadium will require significant investment. To generate the revenue needed over the coming years we need to increase the number of major non-sporting events hosted at the stadium. These events will help unlock the financial potential of the venue, enabling us to elevate the stadium experience for visitors and neighbours alike, while investing in the game of rugby across England.The RFU is due to hold three more consultation events next week including two at the stadium itself to outline their plans for the stadiums future with an initial consultation, launched last autumn, generating more than 3,000 responses.It added: While it is too early to share any images of what the stadium might look like, these events will offer the chance to hear from the RFU about what we are hoping to achieve and how we have taken on board your feedback.Under a timetable published for the work, Twickenham is hoping for a decision onplanning and licensing consent, allowing it to increase the number of major non-sporting events, to be made by September this year.

The London-based architects scheme will modernise the 1930s station by enlarging the concourse and adding gate lines to ease congestion. Additionally, waiting areas, retail spaces, and cycle storage facilities will be upgraded and modernised.The practice also proposes adding a red brick-arched colonnade and clock tower. Enhanced accessibility features will, meanwhile, improve access to Cardiff Central for all abilities.
