With its new offering, Pure is looking to leverage its presence in enterprise storage to win more ... [+] business in the nascent but growing market for enterprise AI. (Photo Illustration by Piotr Swat/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesPure Storage has established itself as a leader in the enterprise storage market, partly due to its flash-only approach to storage, which emphasizes a simple deployment and management experience. Now the company has entered the modern AI storage market with the launch of FlashBlade//EXA, a data storage platform designed to address the unique needs of AI and large-scale high-performance computing deployments. With the AI market so hot and specialized storage players driving a lot of hype, it is worth looking at how Pures approach to solving the needs of AI factories across large enterprise IT organizations can compete, and how the company can be successful in what is undoubtedly a big leap up the storage stack.Moving From Enterprise To AI Is A Different WorldPure has done a stellar job of delivering enterprise-class storage solutions to the market. Its approach to delivering flash-only was not some unique gimmick or marketing ploy; it enabled better performance and reliability at a compelling TCO. And the market responded. Pures FlashArray and FlashBlade products now have more than 13,000 customers, and the company continues to see double-digit growth quarter after quarter. However, the value proposition is bigger than simply selling flash into the enterprise. Anybody who has spent time in an IT organization knows how messy and complex managing a large-scale storage environment can be (which drives up costs). So, in addition to building out highly performant products, Pure has also emphasized removing the complexity from the storage management equation. Customers can consume its products however they want and manage them universally with the help of a copilot. So, enterprise storage needs to be performant, flexible, cost-effective and simple. Check, check, check, check. As Pure focused on establishing its presence in enterprise storage, the AI market (really HPC and AI) has become white-hot, and companies like VAST Data have leaned far more heavily into the complex data management that is required to make an underlying storage architecture perform at scale. In AI, there is much more to driving performant storage than simply adding more servers with more flash. In AI, many different data types are required to feed a training model and keep very expensive GPUs processing efficiently. The only way to do that is to effectively categorize, contextualize, cleanse and tag through metadata. However, when managing metadata, this time-consuming process strains traditional storage environments, preventing them from adequately feeding data to GPU clusters that are performing training.Perhaps the most notable company to address this certainly the first was VAST with its Data Management Platform, a disaggregated, share everything architecture that separates compute from storage and that has what amounts to an AI operating system to manage data more effectively and drive the absolute best performance. VAST rightly recognized the importance of data management as the performance bottleneck in AI. Actually, its fair to say that all storage vendors recognized this, but VAST was early in delivering. Today, most storage vendors have solutions that compete in the AI data market all of them making varying claims about performance, TCO and the like. This brings us to Pure Storage and the FlashBlade//EXA. This product represents Pures expansion from enterprise storage into AI data storage.FlashBlade//EXA Metadata Management For Hyperscalers And EnterpriseThere are two elements to FlashBlade//EXA hardware and software. From a hardware perspective, the AI environment is disaggregated, separating metadata from data. In the Metadata Core (metadata cluster), servers are tasked with managing the unique requirements of this function, where non-linear, non-sequential access to data is the norm for functions such as metadata indexing, data lineage tracking, semantic discovery and query optimization which are critical to performance for AI.Metadata Core servers connect directly with Data Nodes, where enterprise data is stored. This data can be files, documents, images, audio, video and the like. There are also a range of confidentiality, privacy and relevancy classifications. While the servers in these Data Nodes clusters will store and serve a lot of data to be trained and inferenced, it is, in many cases, just data without any real context.FlashBlade//EXA disaggregates AI storage for higher performance.Pure StorageThe above graphic shows that the data and metadata paths connect to compute clusters over separate, dedicated data paths. Powering the Metadata Core is Pures Purity//FB software, with pNFS (i.e., parallel NFS) to enable parallelized access to a distributed transactional database where metadata is stored and quickly accessed.Purity//FB with pNFS delivers performant metadata management at scale.Pure StorageInterestingly, the Data Nodes in Pures solution are commodity, third-party servers certified by Pure. This is interesting because it marks the first time Pure has supported third-party infrastructure for its storage solution. While the company says it plans to incorporate its DirectFlash Module technology in the future, customers today will have to work with a third party to support it. This move somewhat undercuts the value the company places on its DFM technology, as it seems to view data nodes as fully commoditized in the AI equation. Quite frankly, perhaps it is commoditized in the AI equation. Or perhaps the delivery of metadata management in a disaggregated way is such a performance uplift that DFM at the data level is more of an incremental benefit in the bigger picture. Ill be curious to see performance comparisons of clusters of Pure-based data nodes versus clusters built on third-party data nodes. How Does Pure Stack Up In The AI Data Market?Taking a step back from Pure and AI for a moment, lets talk about technology adoption curves. In the early stages of any technology adoption curve, solutions tend to be more complicated in terms of deployment and configuration. Because of this, capabilities and features tend to appear to be deeper. As technology evolves and matures, however, much of the knob turning required to deploy and optimize tends to be abstracted from the user experience. Pure Storage delivers this with FlashBlade//EXA an AI data storage platform rich with capabilities and a big step forward in simplicity.Companies like VAST have done a good job going after the largest-scale AI (and HPC) markets and have several hyperscale and large labs and data environments for their innovation. Now the market is starting to see enterprise AI not just hyperscaler AI enter the conversation. In fact, HPE CEO Antonio Neri talked about the uptick in enterprise AI his company is seeing in his most recent earnings call. Likewise, Dell and Lenovo are seeing AI backlogs that are coming down-segment from hyperscalers to include the enterprise. This is where Pure comes into play and why its work in developing such a strong enterprise presence is important. Pure understands enterprise storage administrators and the overall enterprise data landscape. It has built a product, solution and selling motion that has been very successful in this market. Most importantly, it has been a leader in the notion of stripping away complexity without sacrificing performance or capability. If Pure can do for enterprise AI what it has done for enterprise storage, it will be well positioned. The key is to first go after existing customers with an eye on expanding the Pure footprint. Win some deals, learn some deployment and integration lessons and look to expand from there. The enterprise AI market is incredibly nascent and wide open for AI solutions and for the storage that supports those solutions. While there are some frontrunners, Pure should be able to leverage its standing in enterprise IT to build a presence for these enterprise AI projects that are beginning to kick off.Of course, this is a long game. Ill be watching for early signs of Pures progress with FlashBlade//EXA, such as wins and partnerships, and Ill be sure to share my findings.

  • Apple just patched a security flaw left users open to phishing attacks
    www.digitaltrends.com
Apple just shared news that a new security update is available that patches a critical vulnerability in the Apple Password App. If you havent yet updated your phone to the latest version of iOS, nows a good time it will prevent you from falling victim to previously unknown security flaws. The security flaw allowed bad actors to access stored usernames and passwords. The Apple Password App makes it easy to quickly log in to a website using stored credentials, but it should only work over a secured network; in other words, the URL should begin with HTTPS. Security researchers first discovered the problem when more than 130 insecure websites (those that only used HTTP) had connected with the Password App.Recommended VideosWithout proper verification in place, an attack could redirect a user to nearly identical websites designed to steal user credentials. Thankfully, the most recent patch corrects the problem by ensuring the Password app only uses HTTPS connections by default. That said, your iPhone needs to use at least iOS 18.2 or later.Nirave Gondhia / Digital TrendsYou should aim to use the latest version of iOS whenever possible. Version 18.3.2 also addressed a security flaw that left iPhone users vulnerable to attack. While most operating system updates add new features, many address unintended glitches that pose a risk to the end user. Please enable Javascript to view this contentWhile it might not always be convenient to update the OS especially if your phones storage is nearly maxed out and you have to free up space to download the update its a good idea to do so, as it keeps your device more secure and protects your personal information from those that would seek to profit off it.Editors Recommendations

  • How to get and use Scouts in Assassins Creed Shadows
    www.digitaltrends.com
There are plenty of familiar mechanics returning in Assassins Creed Shadows, such as fast travel and earning XP to level up both Naoe and Yasuke. One of the many new features you will be introduced to early in the game is the Scouts. Once you unlock the Hideout and are given your initial Scouts, they will become an essential tool for finding your next objective and gathering vital resources needed to upgrade your Hideout. However, how to use them or get more isnt very clearly explained for how essential they are. Let us fill you in on all the details about how Scouts work in Assassins Creed Shadows.UbisoftScouts have several primary functions, the first and most important being to scout areas on the world map. Very often, your next objective will not be placed on the map, but instead, you will have directions on the rough location of where it will be. This is where Scouts are necessary. By following the games directions on the map, you need to put your cursor over the area it is describing and assign one or more Scouts to reveal the area. You do this by pressing SquareorXto bring up the dispatch menu and then deploying them at that area. You can see how many Scouts are available on the bottom left of your screen and can assign multiple to an area by pressing the right trigger. The more Scouts you use to scout an area, the larger the area they will reveal.Recommended VideosScouts can also be used to clear your wanted level within a specific region faster than waiting for it to reset with a season change.RelatedFinally, you will sometimes find large stockpiles of resources in the world that you cannot collect yourself but need to assign one or more Scouts to retrieve for you. If you have the necessary number of Scouts available, you can hold the interact button to have them smuggle the resources back to your Hideout at the end of the season. To get more Scouts in your stable, you will need to recruit more people to your cause by building and upgrading the Study building at your Hideout. Normally, Scouts can only be used once per season so you will need to pick and choose how you want to utilize them carefully. However, you can pay some Mon to shorten their cooldowns by paying Mon at any of your unlocked Kakurega.Editors Recommendations

  • Plex ups its price for first time in a decade, changes remote-streaming access
    arstechnica.com
Quote marks doing a lot of work Plex ups its price for first time in a decade, changes remote-streaming access You've got until April 29 before the Lifetime Pass more than doubles in price. Kevin Purdy Mar 19, 2025 2:32 pm | 0 If you want to watch your legal personal backup copy of Chicago Fire while you're away from your Plex server, you'll now need some kind of Plex Pass. Credit: Plex If you want to watch your legal personal backup copy of Chicago Fire while you're away from your Plex server, you'll now need some kind of Plex Pass. Credit: Plex Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn morePlex is a bit hard to explain these days. Even if you don't know its roots as an outgrowth of a Mac port of the Xbox Media Center project, Plex is not your typical "streaming" service, given how most people use it. So as Plex announces its first price increase to its Plex Pass subscription in more than 10 years, it has its work cut out explaining why, what's included, and what is changing.Starting April 29, the cost of a Plex Pass rises from $4.99 to $6.99 monthly, from $39.99 to $69.99 annually, and a lifetime pass now costs $249.99, previously $119.99. In a blog post, Plex cites rising costs and its commitment to an independent service that supports "personal media.""We are all in on the continued success of Plex Pass and personal media," the post states. "This price increase will ensure that we can keep investing dedicated resources in developing new features, while supporting and growing your favorites." The post cites a roadmap that contains an integration with Common Sense Media, a new "bespoke server management app" for managing server users and "an open and documented API for server integrations," including custom metadata agents.Someone in a remote video stream must have a PassAnd then, after that note, Plex hits the big change: Streaming "personal media"i.e. video files, not audio, photos, or offerings from Plex's ad-supported movies and TVfrom outside your own network will no longer be a free Plex feature, starting April 29. "Fully free" might be the better way to put it, because if a server owner has a Plex Pass subscription, their users can still access their server for free. But if you've been hosting your own Plex server to maintain access to your stuff while you're away or relying on the kindness of non-Pass-having friends with servers, either you or your server-owning friends will need a Plex Pass subscription by the end of April.Alternatively, you, as a non-server-running Plex viewer, can get a cheaper Remote Watch Pass, $1.99 per month or $19.99 a year. That doesn't include Plex Pass features like offline downloads, skipping a show intro or credits, or the like, but it does keep you connected to your "personal media" vendors.Plex sweetened the changes a bit by removing the one-time activation fee that users of its Android and iOS apps once paid after hitting a one-minute streaming limit. That used to be a hard fee, even if you were streaming your own files on your own network, but now it's about local versus remote, not TV versus mobile. If you've already paid this unlock fee, you can now get an "extended trial" of the new Remote Watch Pass, Plex says, so long as you sign up on the same platform and with the same account.Lifetime Plex Pass owners are still free to host and stream as they wish. If you want to get in on that kind of relative stability as Plex changes over time, it's still $120 until April 29. Plex's post, which notes that "Yes, that was a lot," has an FAQ section with more details. There is also a new privacy policy and terms of service with the new pricing, though not for those with accounts made before March 20, and Plex notes that it does not share, sell, or largely collect information about personal media use. As The Verge noted, the policy states that if your account is set to public, "watch history, reviews, or other data from the Services that you share publicly" can, indeed, be seen publicly, and possibly used for marketing purposes. An odd-shaped service with ambitionsPlex is now an app where you can pay to rent officially licensed movies, find shows across streaming services, share your viewing and ratings with select friends and "Discover" new options, and, most notably, stream your "personal media," including photos and music. It's a wide-ranging service, and certainly impressive that it has kept its prices steady for a decade. But as the app gains features and complexity, shifts toward a whole new look, and introduces a requirement for at least one side of a remote stream to have paid something, Plex runs the risk of nudging its most enthusiastic users toward less ambitious, more focused alternatives, like Jellyfin. It's now up to Plex to prove that, with the money they can make from tighter Pass requirements, they can make the serving and streaming experience better for both sides.Kevin PurdySenior Technology ReporterKevin PurdySenior Technology Reporter Kevin is a senior technology reporter at Ars Technica, covering open-source software, PC gaming, home automation, repairability, e-bikes, and tech history. • Microdosing LSD is not an effective ADHD treatment
    www.newscientist.com
Can microdosing psychedelics focus the mind?Microgen/ShutterstockTaking small, repeated doses of the psychedelic drug LSD doesnt alleviate ADHD symptoms any more than a placebo.Microdosing psychedelic drugs involves taking them a few times a week in small enough doses to not experience hallucinations. Although there is little evidence backing it up, there is a pervasive idea that this can boost well-being, creativity and focus. And some studies have shown that people who microdose as a way of treating ADHD do report symptoms improving, but these studies were observational and relied on self-reported data. AdvertisementTo test the drugs effects on ADHD more rigorously, Matthias Liechti at the University of Basel in Switzerland and his colleagues conducted the first ever randomised controlled trial of LSD microdosing for ADHD. They recruited 53 adults living in the Netherlands or Switzerland who were diagnosed with ADHD and experienced moderate to severe symptoms. Twenty-seven of the participants took a 20-microgram dose of LSD twice a week on the higher end of microdoses, but still only about a fifth of a standard dose while the rest were given a placebo.ADHD symptoms were assessed at the start of the study and six weeks later using a 54-point scale, where higher scores indicated more severe symptoms. On average, scores decreased by about 7 points in participants taking LSD and nearly 9 points in those given a placebo. This isnt a significant difference, suggesting that LSD is no better than a placebo at improving ADHD symptoms, says Liechti. However, it could be that the dosage wasnt right for treating ADHD, he says. LSD may also need to be taken daily to experience a decrease in symptoms, similar to how current ADHD medications works, says Conor Murray at the University of California, Los Angeles. We still need to see whether an acute dose meaning while the drug is in your body does that have any reduction in symptoms? says Murray. That is kind of the first step. And if it doesnt, then you almost dont even have to ask whether there is any enduring change.Journal reference:JAMA Psychiatry DOI: 10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2025.0044Topics:

The US Navy's oldest active submarine is back for operations in the Pacific after a three-year maintenance period. The USS Ohio is a first-in-class nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine. The repairs were major, including interior work and modernization efforts. The US Navy's oldest submarine still in active service has returned to the fleet after three years of maintenance. The USS Ohio finished major repairs last month and is now certified for unrestricted operations in the Indo-Pacific region, a priority theater where more than half the US Navy submarine fleet is positioned to respond to regional threats.Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, announced the completion last week, writing in a release that the nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine had undergone interior mechanical repairs and shaft replacement. The main ballast tanks and superstructure were also fixed, and the submarine underwent several modernization tweaks, including torpedo tube upgrades. The USS Ohio was converted into an SSGN from 2002 to 2006. US Navy photo by Wendy Hallmark The Ohio was commissioned in 1981 as a ballistic missile sub, part of the fleet of so-called "boomers" that make up the strategic undersea leg of the US nuclear triad, before it was converted to a guided-missile sub packed with cruise missiles.During the recently concluded maintenance, its age meant that the team faced hurdles in overcoming some obsolete materials and designs.Restoring the Ohio was a top Navy priority. Rear Adm. Thomas Wall, commander, Submarine Group Nine, said the submarine's "operational readiness plays a direct role in our undersea warfighter's continued ability to achieve peace through strength."The Ohio will now be returning to the Pacific. The region is significant in US force posturing amid concerns about China, which is building up its naval forces by leveraging its massive shipbuilding juggernaut. The US Navy's shipbuilding plan indicates the USS Ohio will be retired next year. US Navy Photo by Wendy Hallmark Nuclear-powered guided-missile subs, also known as SSGNs, like the Ohio are critical to US undersea capabilities. As an SSGN, the Ohio has been a part of a number of notable deployments, though not always highly publicized. In June 2010, it was one of the three Ohio-class submarines to surfacesimultaneously in different parts of the Indo-Pacific, a surprisingly visible event that sent a message to China.Although the Ohio has rejoined the fleet, its future remains unclear. The Navy's shipbuilding plan would retire it and the USS Florida in 2026, as well as the USS Michigan and USS Georgia in 2028, severely depleting the submarine force's capabilities.Improvements to Virginia-class attack submarines are expected to replace the lost Ohio-class SSGN capabilities, but delays have hamstrung related submarine projects, including new Columbia-class submarines, as the Navy grapples with a range of shipbuilding challenges that have set top programs back by years.
