  • Stunning New Fossil Find Shows Stomach Contents and Color of Ancient Fish
    www.discovermagazine.com
Imagine a lush and vibrant rainforest teeming with life, with various insects crawling and flying around, and abundant aquatic fauna. This is what the now cool, temperate Central Tablelands in southwestern Australia would have looked like around 15 million years ago. This was confirmed by a spectacular recent discovery at the McGrath Flat fossil site near Gulgong in New South Wales, Australia. The site is classified as a "Lagersttte" a location that contains fossils of exceptional quality with remarkable detail.Professor Jochen Brocks, a researcher from the Australian National University, not only discovered a new ancient fish species, Ferruaspis brocksi (named after him), but also made a remarkable find. The fossils extraordinary preservation offers a wealth of information about the species, allowing paleobiologists to reconstruct the flora and fauna of the past. The findings were published by the Australian Museum Research Institute, Sydney, in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.Ancient Fish FossilFerruaspis brocksi is the first fossil freshwater Australian Smelt to be found in Australia, said study lead author Matthew R. McCurry from the Australian Museum and UNSW Sydney in a press release. The ancient species belongs to the Osmeriformes fish family, a crucial group of fish in freshwater ecosystems in Australia and New Zealand. However, their fossil record was poorly represented in these countries, making it difficult to pinpoint their arrival in Australia and understand their evolution. The fossils of F. brocksi, found at the popular McGrath Flat site, are embedded and mineralized in iron-rich rock, which enabled the unusual degree of preservation of this fish, living between 11 million years and 16 million years ago. The preservation even reveals details such as the contents of its stomach and remnants of its color.Reconstructing Behavior and AppearanceThe exceptionally well-preserved stomach contents of the fossilized fish have allowed researchers to reconstruct its behavior, such as its opportunistic diet while living on both the seafloor and in open waters. We now know that F. brocksi fed on a range of invertebrates, but the most common prey was small phantom midge larvae. One of the fossils even shows a parasite attached to the tail of the fish. Its a juvenile freshwater mussel called glochidium. These juvenile mussels attach themselves to the gills or tails of fish to hitch rides up and down streams, said McCurry in the release. Another exciting aspect of this discovery is that researchers have been able to determine the fishs color. Michael Frese from the University of Canberra and CSIRO, Australias national science agency, described the fish as "darker on its dorsal surface, lighter in color on its belly, with two lateral stripes running along its side," in the news release. He added, Using a powerful microscope, we were able to see tiny color-producing structures known as melanosomes. Fossilized melanosomes have previously enabled paleontologists to reconstruct the color of feathers, but melanosomes have never before been used to reconstruct the color pattern of a long-extinct fish species.Excitement of PaleontologyThis little fish is one of the most beautiful fossils Ive found at McGrath Flat, and discovering the first vertebrate among the abundant plant and insect fossils was a real surprise, said Brocks in the press release, highlighting the excitement of paleontology.Based on where the fossils were found, its likely that the species lived its entire life in freshwater. This contrasts with currently existing Osmeriformes species and underscores how specimens with preserved soft tissues can provide valuable insights into the evolutionary history of Australias freshwater fish species and ancient ecosystems.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Plants can now tell you when theyre stressed out
    www.popsci.com
'Plant patches' could help save gardens and farms from environmental stressors. Image: Popular Science compositeShareAnyone who has tried to keep porch plants or a home garden alive through seasonal changes knows its a task easier said than done. Abrupt temperature changeslike cold snapsand prolonged periods of drought can stress plants, disrupting their normal biochemistry. If not addressed quickly enough, those stresses can eventually kill the plant. Disappointed growers often only see the tell-tale signs (like shriveling or browning leaves) after its too late. But a new plant-wearable device developed by researchers at the American Chemical Society could offer an early warning system. The wearable, detailed this week in the journal ACS Sensors, comes in the form of an electromagnetic sensor attached directly to plant leaves. Its purpose is to detect hydrogen peroxide, a chemical plants release when exposed to environmental stress. The sensor consists of an array of microscopic plastic needles mounted on a flexible base. That base is coated with a chitosan-based hydrogel capable of detecting small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, which is then converted into an electric current. The presence of that current alerts growers to their plants stress levels. This sensor measures hydrogen peroxide, a marker of stress in soybean and tobacco plant leaves.Credit: Adapted from ACS Sensors 2025, DOI: 10.1021/acssensors.4c02645 In several experiments, the wearable accurately identified the presence of hydrogen peroxide in groups of plants exposed to a pathogen. In theory, the research notes that a similar type of wearable could be applied to larger crop yields as an affordable way to detect stressed out plants before they are beyond saving. This sensor technology has the potential to function as a portable device for on-site measurement of reactive oxygen species in plants, providing a rapid and cost-effective solution for hydrogen peroxide quantification, the researchers write in the paper.Identifying stressed out plantsA number of environmental factorslike drought, high salinity, and pests or pathogenscan induce stress in plants. When that happens, plants naturally produce hydrogen peroxide, which researchers say serves as an indicator of acute stress. This signals plant cells to activate a variety of defense mechanisms. If the stressors persist for too long, they can ultimately kill the plant. In the past, researchers monitored early signs of plant stress by taking small samples or observing changes in fluorescence. But neither of those options are perfect. Taking samples can damage a plant and induce stress of its own and looking for fluorescence changes can be difficult to clearly detect.Thats where the plant wearable comes in. By attaching an electrochemical sensor directly to a plants leaves, the researchers believed they could get a near-instant response while keeping physical disruption to the plant at a minimum. In practice, the sensors microneedles would penetrate the plant tissue and detect hydrogen peroxide without the need to gather leaf sap extractions. The microneedle surface is coated with a thin layer of gold, mixed with a bio-hydrogel composed of biocompatible and hydrophilic chitosan and horseradish peroxidase enzymes. This reusable patch (shown on the underside of a tobacco leaf) could help growers make decisions earlier to maintain the health of their crops through earlier detection of plant stress.Credit: Adapted from ACS Sensors 2025, DOI: 10.1021/acssensors.4c02645 Researchers attached these sensors to several groups of tobacco and soybean plants. Some of those plants were exposed to a bacterial pathogen called Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 while the controls remained healthy. As expected, the sensors attached to the infected plants quickly showed signs of hydrogen peroxide, indicating stress. Researchers say the electrical current levels measured by the sensors were also directly related to the amount of hydrogen peroxide exuded. The same patches could be reused up to nine more times before the needles wore out and lost their shape. We can achieve direct measurements in under a minute for less than a dollar per test, researcher and paper coauthor Liang Dong said in a statement. This breakthrough will significantly streamline analysis, making it practical for farmers to use our patch sensor for real-time disease crop monitoring.Dong and his coauthors are optimistic that this technology could potentially be scaled up to help farmers and gardeners remotely monitor their plants for signs of health disruption. Its part of a larger, emerging trend in the agriculture industry to incorporate AI-enabled monitoring sensors and even autonomous robots to provide round-the-clock care for plants. And the stakes are high. Every year, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture estimates that around 2030 percent of global crop production is lost to pests and disease, translating to estimated losses surpassing $220 billion.

  • An original E.T. from 1982 movie could fetch $1M at auction
    www.popsci.com
A collection of sci-fi movie memorabilia is heading to auction and includes one of the most iconic film aliens of all time. As part of the upcoming series, There Are Such Things: 20th Century Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy on Screen, Sothebys is offering an original, screen-used E.T. full body model seen in Steven Spielbergs E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Designed by the late, great special effects and makeup artist Carlo Rambaldi, the roughly 3-foot-tall piece of pop culture history was used in the famous closet scene, and is one of just three manufactured during the making of the 1982 movie. While instantly recognizable today, E.T.s overall look was completely absent from Melissa Mathisons screenplay. Creating the character from scratch came through a collaboration between Spielberg, storyboard artist Ed Verreaux, and Rambaldi. For the director, however, three particular historical figures came to mind for the diminutive alien.I remember saying to Carlo, heres some pictures of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, and Carl Sandburg. I love their eyes, Spielberg said in a 1996 behind-the-scenes documentary. Can we make E.T.s eyes as frivolous, and also wizened and as sad as those three icons? As for his other facial features, Rambaldi drew inspiration from his own life: his familys Himalayan cat, Kika. For the body, the artist wanted to reference the long necks of the women depicted in a 1952 painting titled Woman of the Delta from his home country of Italy.Multiple heads and torsos were required for the movie, each created for specific animatronic abilities. The end result was a physical prop capable of 150 different movements, including extending his neck even longer, furrowing his brow, and wrinkling his nose. The total cost to make E.T.? Over $1 million (about $3.3 million in 2025 money).Rambaldi based some of E.T.s facial features on his Himalayan cat, Kika. Credit: Sothebys Carlo Rambaldi passed away in 2012 after a lifetime spent in the movie business. In addition to the E.T. model scheduled for auction, There Are Such Things also features other projects Rambaldi helped realize, including a 40-foot-tall animatronic King Kong for the 1976 remake starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange, the xenomorph from Alien, as well as a 20-foot-long model sandworm used in David Lynchs 1984 adaptation of Dune. The Sothebys There Are Such Things exhibition will be open to the public in New York City from March 29 to April 3, with the online auction closing that same day. One truly diehard E.T. fan will then walk away with the movie prop, which Sothebys estimates will sell for between $600,000 and $900,000.

  • Call Them Losers and Kick Them: Palworld Community Manager on How Pocketpair Deals with Toxicity
    cgshares.com
PocketpairPalworlds international popularity brings not only grateful fans but also tons of unpleasant players, unfortunately. There are many ways to deal with them, but Pocketpair chooses the easiest.Just kick em, Palworlds community manager John Bucky Buckley said at the Game Developers Conference 2025 (via GamesRadar). You just call em losers and you kick em. And then they post on Twitter saying, Bucky called me a loser, and Im like, yeah, youre a loser, dude.'Apparently, Pocketpair has a couple of moderators per region and an army of English-speaking ones, all trained to find toxic players and kick them.Really, theyre just very no-nonsense. Weve told them to be as strict as you want, Bucky added. Palworld is a game thats kind of ripe for toxicity. Its a survival game and has multiplayer. Its ticking all the boxes for worst people. Mix that with the furry community, and these things do not go together. The Palworld Discord is 24/7 mayhem. So very early on, we said, look, if people are out of line, just kick them. I mean, who cares at this point? What are they doing to do?Well, I can imagine what, remembering the guy who sent 39 death threats to Nintendo employees. People can get pretty creative, like the Destiny 2 player who harassed Bungie workers and even sent a pizza to their house to show he knew where they lived.Hopefully, Palworld, which attracted millions of people how, Bucky has no idea wont lead to that.Especially since the studio is still fighting against Nintendo over Pokmon patents.Join our 80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us onInstagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post Call Them Losers and Kick Them: Palworld Community Manager on How Pocketpair Deals with Toxicity appeared first on CG SHARES.

  • Lego Transformers Optimus Prime Is Finally Back In Stock With A Big Discount
    www.gamespot.com
The extremely cool Optimus Prime Lego set has been difficult to find in stock at any retailer for months, but the Autobot leader has quietly transformed his Amazon listing to in stock with Prime delivery. Considering how scarce the 1,508-piece Lego Transformers kit has been--it was sold out even before the holiday shopping season--it's somewhat surprising that Amazon is also offering a 20% discount that drops the price of Optimus Prime to $144 (was $180). Amazon's deal matches the all-time low price that we've previously seen during big sales events like Black Friday. Get deal at Amazon We wouldn't be surprised to see this 2-in-1 build--Optimus can quickly switch between mech and truck modes--sell out again soon. If Amazon sells out, it's worth noting that the Lego Store restocked Optimus Prime, too, but you'll have to pay the full $180 MSRP. Lego officially denotes Optimus Prime as "hard to find." This description combined with the prolonged stock shortages could mean that the Optimus Prime kit, which debuted in 2022, is close to retirement.Continue Reading at GameSpot
