• Tesla Fans Furious at Video of Tesla Crashing Into Wall Painted Like Road
    futurism.com
YouTuber and former NASA engineer Mark Rober has kicked the hornet's nest with his latest video. In the piece titled "Can You Fool a Self Driving Car?" Rober found that a Tesla car on Autopilot was fooled by a Wile E. Coyote-style wall painted to look like the road ahead of it, with the electric vehicle plowing right through it instead of stopping. The footage was damning enough, with slow-motion clips showing the car not only crashing through the styrofoam wall but also a mannequin of a child. The Tesla was also fooled by simulated rain and fog.A separate test vehicle, a Luminar tech-equipped Lexus SUV, aced the tests. The stunt was meant to demonstrate the shortcomings of relying entirely on cameras rather than the LIDAR and radar systems used by brands and autonomous vehicle makers other than Tesla."I can definitively say for the first time in the history of the world, Tesla's optical camera system would absolutely smash through a fake wall without even a slight tap on the brakes," Rober said in the video. But Tesla's fanboys have since cried foul, arguing that the EV maker could even sue Rober for "false advertising/misleading an audience," according to YouTuber Kevin "Meet Kevin" Paffrath. In a response video posted to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's X-formerly-Twitter, Paffrath argued that Rober had disengaged Autopilot right before crashing into the fake wall.Paffrath went as far as to allege that Rober was being paid by Luminar, the LIDAR tech company that outfitted the SUV that went head-to-head with the Tesla.Other users on X argued that Rober should've used Tesla's infamous Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, which costs a whopping $8,000 on top of the cost of the vehicle. In a separate post seemingly responding to the allegations, Rober shared the "raw footage of my Tesla going through the wall.""Not sure why it disengages 17 frames before hitting the wall but my feet werent touching the brake or gas," he added. In other words, is this really a smoking gun or did the Autopilot disengage by itself, sending the Tesla plowing right through the wall while under "human" control? As Electrek points out, Autopilot has a well-documented tendency to disengage right before a crash. Regulators have previously found that the advanced driver assistance software shuts off a fraction of a second before making impact. It's a highly questionable approach that has raised concerns over Tesla trying to evade guilt by automatically turning off any possibly incriminating driver assistance features before a crash.Put simply, instead of taking down Rober's purportedly anti-Musk hit piece, Paffrath inadvertently highlighted Tesla's shady practices.Tesla has already been extremely reluctant about handing over crash data, especially when it comes to its infamous "Full Self-Driving" feature, duking it out with the California Department of Motor Vehicles in 2023.Tesla has also gone after crash data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The EV maker reportedly asked the regulator to redact information about whether its Autopilot or FSD software was used during every single documented crash since 2021.In short, Rober's latest video still points out a glaring shortcoming when it comes to Tesla's safety features no matter how unhappy it makes Tesla fanboys.Share This Article

  • How to Spot ADHD Misinformation on TikTok
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 19, 20254 min readADHD Misinformation Is Common on TikTok. Heres How to Spot ItWith limited access to mental health care, people looking for answers about ADHD are turning to TikTok, where information is frequently misleading or inaccurateBy Allison Parshall edited by Dean Visser mihailomilovanovic/Getty ImagesOn TikTok, videos about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) abound; it is consistently one of the most popular health-related topics on the app. People often share relatable content about their own experiences with the condition, and many adults report learning they had ADHD by watching these videos. But misinformation about ADHD is also common, a group of psychology researchers reported on Wednesday in PLOS ONE. In the 100 most popular TikTok videos about the topic at the time of this study, only half of claims about symptoms reflected the core diagnostic criteria of ADHD, according to evaluations made by two clinical psychologists . The other half of the claims were largely overgeneralized, misleading or inaccurate but were often presented with confidence and without nuance. The findings dont mean these videos are intentionally misleading or even entirely unhelpful, but the researchers emphasize the need for caution in interpreting and internalizing them.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. These videos have an incredible reach and are very popular, says the new studys lead author Vasileia Karasavva, a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology at the University of British Columbia. What I think our study tapped into is that people are struggling, and people are trying to understand themselves better in the context of ADHD, she says. But getting support through the mental health care system is onerous and expensive, she notesand this drives people to seek information on social media, where it can be difficult to assess whether what theyre learning is supported by clinical experience and research.Karasavva and her colleagues evaluated the top 100 videos under TikToks #ADHD tag on January 10, 2023. The study co-authors, including two psychologists with at least 20 years of experience in diagnosing and treating ADHD, then evaluated the videos many claims about symptoms and treatment. The researchers found that 55.6 percent of claims about ADHD treatments werent empirically supported and that 51.3 percent of claims about symptoms did not reflect a core diagnostic ADHD symptom as specified by the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).Of those noncore symptom claims, only 5.6 percent referred to issues that are associated with ADHD, such as working memory problems, based on empirical research. Most referred to symptoms that are associated with other conditionsor, in the case of 68.5 percent of these claims, that are more reflective of what the studys clinicians deemed normal human experience. For example, frequently bumping into furniture, listening to the same songs over and over or having a sweet tooth were commonly presented as indications of ADHD in the videos. But they are not, Karasavva points out.You can sometimes find a grain of truth in these associations, says Lorenzo Lorenzo-Luaces, a psychologist at Indiana University Bloomington, who studies online misinformation but was not involved in the new paper. But these often loose connections, which are typically based on peoples personal experiences, can be overgeneralized. Misinformation research shows that people are more likely to believe claims to which they are repeatedly exposedwhether they trust the source at the time or nothe adds. Some of the noncore symptoms presented as ADHD indicators might also reflect active areas of scientific debate, Lorenzo-Luaces says. For example, problems with emotional regulation are increasingly recognized as a common experience among people with ADHD but arent a part of the official diagnostic criteria. The videos often lacked nuance in presenting symptoms, however, the researchers found. Only 4 percent of the videos acknowledged that the symptoms they mentioned dont apply to everyone with ADHD, and even fewer mentioned that people without ADHD might experience those symptoms, too. In videos where people recounted their own personal experience, this lack of nuance was less concerning to the researchers. But in others, information was presented as blanket fact. For example, one video about habit formation began with a creator saying, Just a quick reminder that anything you do with ADHD has a 100 percent relapse rate. Difficulty forming habits isnt necessarily associated with ADHD, the researchers say, and such absolute statements have the potential to mislead or even harm people who are trying to learn about themselves.A very high level of confidence like this can be a red flag that someone is providing exaggerated or inaccurate information about ADHD, Karasavva says. A clear financial incentive can be another warning sign. The team found that 50 percent of the creators of the most popular videos were directly soliciting donations or selling products or services, such as fidget spinners, workbooks or coaching services. We still think that, for a huge chunk of [creators], their intentions were pure, Karasavva says. But online platforms often incentivize creators to post quick and entertaining videosand to do so frequentlywhich might create some barriers to making content that is very well researched and has nuance. If someone wants to know more about what ADHD is and how it might appear in their life, Karasavva recommends talking to an expert mental health provider. But she also highlights that obtaining a diagnosis can be an onerous, time-consuming, expensive and complicated process that can be much harder for people with ADHD to navigate. And this process can be worse for people in historically underdiagnosed groups because many ADHD diagnostic criteria and treatments were developed based on how the condition appeared in white male children. "People of color and women have been missed by this diagnosis. So Im not faulting anyone who is like, I dont trust the system because the system wasnt built for me, Karasavva says. Theyre not wrong about that.People will continue to rely too heavily on social media for key mental health information until care is more accessible and equitable, she adds: Nothing will change if the system doesnt change and become more accessible to people who need support, Karasavva says.

Cult classic horror adventure I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is coming to consolesAnd it's out next week.Image credit: Eurogamer/Nightdive Studios News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 19, 2025 Cult classic 90s point-and-click horror adventure I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is - in a slightly unexpected turn of events - making the jump from PC to PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch next Thursday, 27th March, courtesy of Nightdive Studios. As well-read sorts will no doubt immediately recognise, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is based on author Harlan Ellison's influential post-apcalyptic short-story of the same name. Its point-and-click adaptation - developed by Cyberdreams and The Dreamers Guild - released in 1996, building on the story from an extensive outline penned for the game by Ellison himself.I Have No Mouth's game adaptation, as in the short story, focusses on the last five human survivors of an apocalypse orchestrated by a sadistic AI, who've all been kept alive and tortured by that same artificial intelligence (here voiced by Ellison himself) for over a century. It follows each character's final trial and the personalised psychological torments inflicted upon them by the computer, each unfolding over its own chapter and playable in any order. Here's Nightdive's PC release trailer, which shows more of the game.Watch on YouTubeWith freedom perhaps now finally in reach for each character if only they can satisfy the murderous AI's whims, players must confront story shaping moral dilemmas as each trial unfolds. That's alongside the kind of disturbing, provocative horror themes that set the game apart from its point-and-click contemporaries back in 1996 - themes that helped I Have No Mouth garner strong critical acclaim on release, despite it ultimately proving to be a comemrcial flop. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream's console release is built on remaster specialist Nightdive Studios' earlier PC version, itself well over a decade old at this point. "Over the last couple of years," the studio explains in its announcement, "we've seen a lot of love for the original game and Harlan Ellison's short story across social media platforms... It only felt right that we helped make this title more accessible and further preserve its legacy."And if that appeals, I Have No Mouth will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch when it launches next Thursday, 27th March.

  • Helldivers 2 boss says industry doomed to "unnecessarily brutal" layoffs while "chasing after the battle royales"
    www.eurogamer.net
Helldivers 2 boss says industry doomed to "unnecessarily brutal" layoffs while "chasing after the battle royales""Those safe bets are a death sentence."Image credit: PlayStation News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on March 19, 2025 Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt has slammed the current spate of video games industry layoffs as "unnecessarily brutal" and said that companies needed to learn lessons to avoid the same painful cycle of "death and rebirth" in future. Speaking today at GDC 2025, in a session attended by Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale, Pilestedt put the blame for layoffs on the decisions made by company bosses that they should chase industry trends such as yet more battle royales, just because a big few have become successful. Instead, Pilestedt continued, the video game industry needed to take more risks and simply make a wider variety of games to cater to the medium's ever-growing audience. That such widespread layoffs were happening despite more people playing games overall was "ridiculous", Pilestedt commented."The games industry is caught in a vicious circle of death and rebirth," he said. "Every so often we lay off thousands of people suddenly, and then nobody understands why, and I think it's just because we converge."We will always go through the cycles of death and rebirth, but now that cycle is unnecessarily brutal because we don't diversify enough. We need to make more types of games because people are playing more than ever and still we are unable to stay in business. It's ridiculous."People are playing more than ever and still we are unable to stay in business. It's ridiculous.""If everybody stopped making battle royales and made [different] games we wouldn't be in this position."While the majority of video game workers losing jobs were those on development teams, the people calling the shots on which projects were getting greenlit were the ones deciding to "play it safe" by following trends, Pilestedt continued."A lot of publishers - I'm sorry, my dear publisher friends - try to play it safe by taking safe bets," Pilestedt said. "But one thing that I can guarantee is that those safe bets are a death sentence for the studios that try to make it."We are in the business of taking risks, and if you don't take risks, we're never gonna be able to achieve success. Few people believed that Helldivers would amount to anything, and yet here we are."Earlier in the same talk, Pilestedt shared his thoughts on game design, and said that "experiences need to be spiky" in order to stand out. "Game design is about experiences," Pilestedt noted. "If you balance out all the chaos, you make an uninteresting game. Balance is the polishing of an experience... but if you smoothen that out too much, it will just be bland."Too many games were trying to please too many people, in other words, or make something too similar to something else that has come before. "You can't overtake if you stay in the same lane," Pilestedt continued, "making a game 10 percent better than something [that already exists]."I love Escape From Tarkov, but if I were to make Escape from Tarkov that's a little bit [more] my preference, I would just be making Escape from Tarkov. And I would not be able to compete because people would rather play Escape from Tarkov than play my Escape from Tarkov."Unfortunately everybody was chasing after the battle royales.""We have a convergence problem in the games industry. Minecraft is doing well. Battle royale is doing well. Live-service is the big next thing. All the developers move into the same position to compete for the same niche. "And what happens? Lots of unsatisfied players are saying, 'Well, what about my needs? I want to play some games and I have lots of money to spare.' Unfortunately everybody was chasing after the battle royales."Concluding his session, Pilestedt challenged the games industry to "take more risks" in order to "avoid mass failures" from chasing trends."Make your games according to your studio's foundation and style," he said. "Don't copy others instead, think about what you wanna make and take a gamble on it."Earlier this year, Pilestedt announced he would be taking a sabbatical after working for 11 years on the Helldivers series, but would start developer Arrowhead's next game on his return. The sci-fi shooter has been a huge success for publisher PlayStation, with more 12m copies sold in three months and a Helldivers movie now on the way.

Her aesthetic showcases the luxe sheets act as a chameleon to be dressed down in a kid's space or elevated in a primary bedroom. Our editors wouldnt want you to miss out on those airy Tencel linen sheets that cool even the hottest sleepers or a lumbar pillow cover that works just as well for reading in bed as it does for kicking back on a sofa. Here, 13 top picks with Parachute sale prices you dont want to sleep on.Parachute Eco MattressLike all the bedding on Parachutes site, the Eco mattress is made with utmost craftsmanship and high-quality materialsin this case pure New Zealand wool and 100% organic cotton. It has five times more pocketed coils than a standard mattress, which are strategically positioned for stabilitythe firm coils are in the center, with the soft coils at the head and feet. There is plenty of give, but you dont sink into it or leave an imprint. My back feels very supported, says contributor Kristen Flanagan, who also likes the soft hand-tufted top thats not too mushy. Try the mattress for yourself without worry, it comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty.Photo: Nashia BakerParachute Heirloom TENCEL Linen Sheet SetNashia Baker, senior commerce editor, who was worried about overheating in the Tencel linen sheets, can assure you that this bedding has an airiness that keeps her comfortable throughout the night. Unlike my crisp sheet sets, these have a relaxed look that I love, she says in her review. After several trips through the washer and dryer, Ive been really impressed by their durability. I havent noticed any color fading or frayed threads over time.Parachute Linen Duvet CoverWith linen, sometimes it can be a roll of the dice. This set had the best of both worlds: super supple but still casually elevated, says Lila Allen, AD PRO associate director, in her review. The 100% European flax linen, made in the Guimares region of Portugal, is perfect for snuggling under the cover. We also love that its Oeko-Tex Standard 100-certified, meaning that every element (even buttons!) has been tested for harmful substances and no artificial chemicals are used to soften the plush linen. It comes in eight colors, though if youre into this sale collection, you need to act fast as the lush Evergreen hue is already sold out.Parachute Linen Sheet SetThe color palette is rich and ranges from moody Dusk, a navy hue, to the new sumptuous Java shade that falls in line with the chocolate-hue obsession that is making its rounds in interiors. Sydney Gore, senior digital design editor, refers to this linen sheet set as soft as a cloud. My bed always feels like a nest when its covered in this set and I generally sleep soundly through the night, she adds in her cooling sheets review. These are particularly good during the warmer months, and as the temperatures rise, youll want to stock up and be ready when summer is in full swing.Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Tub MatOne thing we learned, if you live in a historical home with an original tile floorits going to get pretty chilly in the winter. This bath mat, however, is the best way to transition out of the steamy hot shower. You might just want to get it in every color and rotate throughout the seasons. I was a little concerned that something so dense might be constantly damp or take forever to dry but Ive found it to be quite the opposite after using it for more than a year, says commerce director Rachel Fletcher in her best bath mats review. The limited-time price cut on this 100% Turkish cotton bath mat is also a steal, as it feels plush and much more expensive than its price tag, she adds.Parachute Waffle RobeThe 100% Turkish cotton waffle robe has all the essentials: a lightweight feel, two hip pockets, a folded collar, and secure waist tie. Its also fairly long. As a tall person, commerce producer Lauren Arzbaecher appreciates the fit. The waffle texture is deceptively thick, and seems to help wick moisture away quickly, she adds in her review on stylish robes. It comes in three neutral colorswhite, tan, and greyso this loungewear will pair well with any bath bundle in your bathroom without becoming an eyesore hanging on a hook. Bonus: these robes make for a great gift, and Mothers Day is right around the corner.Photo: Julia HarrisonParachute Classic Turkish Cotton SlippersEven if you dont get the waffle robe, youll want to snag these terry cloth slippers. Julia Harrison, our commerce writer, is all about these plush babies who refers to them as dead-ringers for posh hotel slippers. We also love that the soft sole is like youre walking on marshmallows, yet the rubber outsole has enough grip that you wont go sliding down the stairs.Parachute Down Side Sleeper PillowEven if you dont get the Eco mattress, at least grab these down pillows. The medium-density style works well for side sleepers and has a 3.5-inch gusset to keep your neck and shoulders correctly aligned while you snooze. Our tester, Audrey Lee, ADs commerce editor, says its on the cushier side and feels light, almost like a luxury pillow you would find at a five-star hotel or resort. Which is not surprising, as it is made with premium European white down (85% down clusters, 15% down and feather fibers) and has a 100% sateen cotton shell. If youre still on the fence, it comes with a three-year warranty.Photo: Rachel FletcherParachute Waffle TowelsBestowed with the honor of most absorbent in our best bath towels review, these 100% long-staple Turkish cotton bath and hand towels come in four colors: White, Bone, Charcoal, and Evergreen (which is so popular the bath towel is already sold out). I have very sensitive skin and a rough towel never does me well, but the Parachute towels feel great against the skin, says commerce director Rachel Fletcher in her review. They dont cause any redness or irritation. I have tried many waffle towels in the past and these ones are by far the softest. Grab one (or two, or three!) for yourself and then add some extra hand towels to pop them into a guest bathroom and impress your visitors.Parachute Down Mattress TopperThe queen-size mattress topper is already sold out so you better hustle if you want to benefit from the sale prices on other mattress sizes. The 3-inch down topper has a 750-fill power which is distributed evenly with a three-dimensional baffle box stitching and encased in a cotton sateen shell. The dual-chamber design has two layers of down and feathers so even someone with a Princess and the Pea persona wont complain.Parachute Matelasse CoverletAnother made-in-Portugal Parachute find that is sure to skew into heirloom territory. Contributor Madeleine Luckel tested this coverlet with a pattern thats similar to a traditional French weave. Its oatmeal-y color is a nice, natural neutral, but its stitched details are the true hero attribute, she says in a quilt and coverlets review. Even though it may look fancy, the combed cotton fabric is still machine-washable.Parachute Organic Cotton Fitted SheetThere is cotton, and then there is brushed cotton. Similar to a percale sheet set, which is airy and cooling, this material is also cozy and soft like your favorite well-loved T-shirt. We also like this pick because not everyone uses a top sheet, making what you put on your bed that much more important. The elastic hem on this fitted sheet fits snugly around the mattress so even the most wiggly sleeper is likely to keep it in place.Parachute Linen Grain Sack Lumbar Pillow CoverA lumbar pillow like this brown linen design from Parachute marries the very now colorway with that timeless heirloom quality. Handwoven on a frame loom, it stands out from typical linen pillows. Its texture is what makes it perfect for tossing on a bed for when youre catching up on a last-minute book club novel, but it also fits just right if you need some extra support in a kitchen banquette bench.

  • 11 Gray Bedroom Ideas to Inspire Your Tranquil Sanctuary
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Is gray a good color for a bedroom?Yes! Thanks to its versatility, gray is a fantastic bedroom color. It can be used in every style, from traditional to midcentury modern to contemporary minimalist. It works beautifully with bright colors, pastels, jewel tones, and other neutrals, and it can achieve whatever ambiance youre seeking to instill in your space, be it elegant, moody, or comforting. Gray is one of those versatile power colors, Schlegelmilch says. Theres a sophistication to the color gray, yet it can allow a space to feel enveloped and cozy if you select a gray with a warmer undertone. What accent colors work in a gray bedroom? As we mentioned, nearly every color pairs well with gray. Blue is a popular partner because it simply always looks good: It may be clich, but its clich for a reason, Copeland says. Owen suggests combining gray with earthy greens, warm neutrals, or a rich burgundy, while Tucker insists a touch of mustard yellow brings just the right amount of freshness to a gray bedroom. You truly cannot go wrong. How do I style a gray bedroom? For a tranquil look, style a gray bedroom with home decor items in various shades of the hue. Consider dark gray linen curtains, heather gray throw pillows, a pale bone area rug, or smoked glass lamps. If you prefer a more upbeat gray bedroom, weave in some of the accent colors we mentioned above. Seek out a light blue velvet headboard, a brass chandelier, a teal quilt, or an ochre armchair. With endless possibilities for decorative accents, the true challenge in curation is instilling impact through intentional selection, Masters-Coats says.
