• The crypto bars are invading Washington
    www.theverge.com
In a true sign of a vibe shift in Washington, a DC bar beloved by Republican staffers announced that it was shuttering its doors and will reportedly be replaced by a bar that only accepts cryptocurrency as payment.Local news site PoPville first reported on Thursday that a D.C. outpost of Pubkey, a bar located in Greenwich Village that describes itself as a vibrant bitcoin community, had taken over the lease of Hill Country, a popular Texas barbecue restaurant and music venue, which recently announced it would close its doors in Penn Quarter after 14 years. Its part of a trend of crypto-centric social venues opening up across the country in the past several years. Pubkey, which opened in 2022 near New York Universitys Manhattan campus, has a notably casual atmosphere: a subterranean dive bar-slash-podcast recording studio, with a pub grub menu designed by an Eleven Madison Park alum, where anyone could hang out so long as they paid with cryptocurrency. (When Eater visited in 2022, they observed a variety of regional styles of hot dogs on the menu, as well as a stuffed raccoon next to a television that appeared to be playing A Christmas Story.) But unlike its competitors, Pubkey has a unique link to the White House: Donald Trump made a high-profile visit during the 2024 campaign and used $998.70 worth of bitcoin to buy smash burgers for the entire bar, becoming the first president to conduct a bitcoin transaction a symbolic embrace of the crypto community. When reached for comment, Pubkey owner Thomas Pacchia confirmed that they would be opening a DC location in the coming months, but declined to specify the location. The DC location will have podcast studios, event space, all that stuff, he told The Verge. Although he acknowledged the negative publicity surrounding Trumps visit, Pacchia added that Democrats such as Rep. Ritchie Torres and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand had visited Pubkey as well and hoped the new location would draw a bipartisan crowd. Anybody that wants to come and talk about Bitcoin is welcome. Literally, anyone. The bar it will reportedly replace has diametrically opposed vibes. Located close to DCs power lobbying firms, Hill Country, a bar whose decor could not scream TEXAS any louder, has long been known as a DC nightlife spot particularly beloved by Republican staffers looking for live country music, a good smoked brisket, and decently priced well liquor. Its also a place where one could witness high-powered GOP lawmakers letting loose: Rep. George Santos was once spotted singing I Will Survive on a Wednesday karaoke night in 2023, while under a federal and Congressional investigation for fraud and lying about his background. (This reporter has personally attended several live karaoke nights and at least one company holiday party at Hill Country over the past several years.) Pubkeys arrival in Washington comes at a notable time in cryptos history, whether it displaces the Republican bar or not. Once considered an unserious group of libertarians by lawmakers, the cryptocurrency community now has massive influence with the Trump administration, thanks to key crypto players such as David Sacks and Elon Musk supporting Trumps reelection. Trump himself has embraced cryptocurrency more than previous presidents, launching his own memecoin, appointing Sacks as a crypto czar and announcing a potential cryptocurrency strategic reserve. (The rise of crypto has inadvertently stoked competition between the nativist MAGA right and the global economy-focused tech right, a tension so palpable that Vice President J.D. Vance recently had to call for a truce between the two.) With the upcoming opening of Pubkey, it appears that in the nations capital, the crypto faction is literally gaining ground. See More:

  • Gemini app rolling out Audio Overviews to Android, iOS
    9to5google.com
As announced earlier this week, the Gemini app is getting the ability to generate Audio Overview podcasts, with Android and iOS users beginning to see this capability today.Audio Overviews have widely rolled out on the web for free Gemini and paid Advanced subscribers in English, with more languages coming soon.On mobile, uploading a document or slideshow will show a new Generate Audio Overview suggestion chip alongside Talk Live about this (which has not fully launched on Android). You can also open the overflow menu in Deep Research reports to generate a podcast. After tapping, it takes a few minutes for the conversation between two AI hosts to generate. Google will send a notification when its ready. The other way to access is by going to the Chats history in the top-left corner of the homescreen. Before todays launch, you could not access past Audio Overviews in your history on mobile. Something unexpected about this capability is how the Gemini app has no built-in audio player. Instead, tapping the Gemini Audio Overview directly opens the file (.m4a) in a browser tab. As such, youre interacting with the default Chrome, iOS, etc. player, though it does allow for straightforward downloads. This is strange since gemini.google.com has an inline player for Audio Overviews. These podcasts can be up to several minutes in length, with the aim being to summarize the material, draw connections between topics, engage in a dynamic back-and-forth and provide unique perspectives. One thing to keep in mind with file-based Audio Overviews is that the conversation is based on that source and not real-world knowledge. Its different with Deep Research-derived podcasts.More on Gemini:Add 9to5Google to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Kanzi the Bonobo, Who Learned Language and Made Stone Tools, Dies at Age 44
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 20, 20253 min readKanzi the Bonobo, Who Learned Language and Made Stone Tools, Dies at Age 44What we learned about ape and human cognition from Kanzi the bonobo, who died this weekBy Kate Wong edited by Jeanna BrynerKanzi the bonobo died on March 18, 2025, at the age of 44. Ape InitiativeKanzi the bonobo, who learned how to communicate with humans using symbols, has died at the age of 44. Raised and kept in captivity, Kanzi was the subject of many studies aimed at illuminating ape cognition and the origins of human language and tool use.Why It MattersKanzi was not the first great ape to learn how to communicate with humans using symbols. Koko the gorilla and Washoe the chimpanzee learned signs that were adapted from American Sign Language. But unlike his predecessors, who acquired their skills through direct training from researchers, Kanzi developed an interest in such symbols on his own when his adoptive mother, Matata, was receiving lessons on how to use keyboard lexigrams to communicate. Kanzi went on to learn hundreds of symbols that represented various objects and activities, as well as some more abstract concepts. Sometimes he combined these symbols to create new meaning. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Kanzi was also something of a technologist. Archaeologists Nicholas Toth and Kathy Schick, both at Indiana University, began working with Kanzi in 1990 to teach him and his sister Panbanisha how to make stone tools by using one rock as a hammerstone to remove sharp flakes from another rock called a core. Kanzi slowly got more adept at flaking stone through time, Toth recalls. Early in Kanzis training, he invented his own technique for making stone tools, throwing a flint cobble against a hard tile floor to remove larger flakes. He would then use the flakes to cut a cord to open a box with a food treat inside. After developing this technique, Toth says, Kanzi seemed to realize that the force of impact was important in getting larger usable flakes and applied this newfound knowledge when he resumed using the hammerstone-and-core technique to make tools.Kanzi the bonobo learned hundreds of symbols to represent objects, activities and abstract concepts over his lifetime.Ape InitiativeKanzis toolmaking skills fell short of those of modern-day humans and our ancestors, however. When Toth and Schick compared Kanzi and Panbanishas handiwork with their own and that of human ancestors who lived 2.6 million years ago, they found that the bonobos had many more failed attempts at removing flakes from the coresand that the flakes the bonobos did produce were smaller than the ones made by humans. We feel that their limitations in flaking were both biomechanical and cognitive, Toth says. You have to recognize acute angles on core edges and strike in the right place and at the right angle with your stone hammer to successfully remove flakes. What the Experts SayPrimatologist Jill Pruetz of Texas State University, who studies wild chimpanzees in Senegal, shared her memories of Kanzi on Facebook: I was lucky enough to meet Kanzi a few times & even got to hold a conversation with him via his symbol board and got to play chase with him too, she wrote. He had a hard time understanding my spoken words only if it was a word that had a soft a sound in it, which I blame on my Texas accent. One of Pruetzs favorite pieces of Kanzi lore, she added, was a story about him using two of his symbols to describe a frightening beaver he discovered in his new outdoor habitat in Iowa. He combined the symbols for water and gorilla, the latter referred to something scary in his world, and I always think of beavers ... as water gorillas now, she wrote.More about KanziKanzi was born in 1980 at what is now the Emory National Primate Research Center Field Station. He and Panbanisha were moved to the Language Research Center at Georgia State University in 1985. From there the siblings were sent to the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa. That research facility eventually closed amid accusations of animal neglect, among other troubles, shortly after Panbanisha died there in 2012. The Ape Conservation and Cognition Initiative (ACCI) took over the facility in 2013. On March 19, 2025, the ACCI announced that Kanzi had died on March 18. According to the ACCI, Kanzi hadnt shown any signs of illness that day and had spent the morning foraging for breakfast, chasing his nephew Teco and enjoying enrichment surprises before settling in for a grooming session and becoming unresponsive. Kanzis cause of death is unknown; necropsy results are pending. He was being treated for heart disease.

Epic Games Store's latest free PC and mobile games are hereJurassic World Evolution 2! Meat Boy! More!Image credit: Eurogamer News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 21, 2025 Another week is upon us - and that means more Epic Games Store freebies, with the likes of Jurassic World Evolution 2 currently available for nowt. But things are a little bit different this time around; starting today, Epic is introducing weekly free games to its mobile store - available worldwide on Android devices and on iOS in the EU.As usual, Epic's latest free games are available for seven days - starting today, 20th March, and running through to next Thursday, 27th March. During that time, you can grab the following:Jurassic World Evolution 2 (PC)Super Meat Boy Forever (iOS/Android)Eastern Exorcist (iOS/Android)Jurassic World Evolution 2 trailer.Watch on YouTubeIt's a decent line-up then, starting with Jurassic World Evolution 2 - Frontier Developments' dinosaur-themed park management sequel, in which players attempt to create a thriving dino attraction that, all being well, won't attempt to eat the guests. As for this week's mobile offerings, Super Meat Boy Forever is a good 'un, taking the twitchy platforming of developer Team Meat's 2010 classic and turning it into an endless runner. "Super Meat Boy Forever does more with two buttons than most do with 14", we wrote back in 2017. And finally, there's Eastern Exorcist - a side-scrolling action RPG set in a fantasy world of spirits and monsters. Epic notes this one's only available in certain regions, but doesn't say which. And if you're wondering what's coming next, you might have to wait a bit. Epic's breaking from tradition this week, and hasn't revealed what'll be replacing its current bunch of free games. Instead, its next two PC freebies are simply listed as "mystery game" over on its store. Epic, of course, launched its mobile store last August, following ceaseless legal activity and new EU regulations requiring major companies such as Apple to allow sideloading and alternate marketplaces on their devices. Not long after, Epic confirmed its free weekly games programme would be coming to mobile, and here we are now.
