  • Kingmakers Gets New Trailer Showcasing Destruction, Will Feature 4-Player Co-Op
    gamingbolt.com
During Future Games Show 2025, developer Redemption Road took the spotlight to showcase its upcoming action strategy hybrid game Kingmakers. While the trailer features footage weve seen before, it features developer Ian Fisch giving us quite a few bits of new information about the title, including the fact that it is being developed using Unreal Engine 4. Check out the trailer below.According to Fisch, the story of Kingmakers revolves around a modern-day soldier being sent back in time to 1401 to take part in the Welsh Rebellion of the time. While the real-world version of the rebellion was defeated, with its leader Owain Glyndr disappearing under mysterious circumstances, Kingmakers will have players, armed with assault rifles and tanks, lead the rebellion to victory in their quest to conquer England.Fisch points out that one of the key features of Kingmakers will be that the thousands of soldiers that players take on in any of the games levels will all be fully simulated. He compared this to a game like Dynasty Warriors, which tends to spawn in fresh soldiers to fight when players get close. Instead, all the soldiers will be in the battlefield right from the beginning of the level, with each one playing their part in the fight.Buildings will also be fully navigable and destructible. This can lead to hordes of soldiers being able to storm a massive castle which features complex architecture across its multiple floors. Fisch promises the same level of pathfinding and fidelity that players expect from modern shooters.Originally, we thought Kingmakers was going to be a cool simulation of what it would be like to go back in time with modern weapons, says Fisch in the trailer. Would you be able to defeat a medieval army with an AK-47? Then we realised that if were going to do this, weve got to do it right. Medieval battles involve thousands of soldiers, so were going to simulate thousands of soldiers. He also revealed that the idea to add real-time strategy game mechanics to Kingmakers came about because the studio figured that, with battles of massive scopes taking place, players would want to command their own armies. This led to the studio adding building and army recruitment mechanics to what was originally going to be a more standard action game.Fisch goes on to describe Kingmakers as a shooter with real-time strategy mechanics that rival Age of Empires, and shooting gameplay that rivals Helldivers and Space Marine. When it comes to the destructible buildings in Kingmakers, Fisch mentions that players have a wide range of ways in how they can raze the structures. Players can use grenade launchers, call in airstrikes, or even just drive through buildings in a heavily-armoured tank. The destruction is all supposed to be dynamic, with no strictly-scripted building collapses in the game.Fisch notes that the studio decided to develop Kingmakers using Unreal Engine 4 over its more recent iterations primarily because of how the engine handles physics. While Unreal Engine 5 has plenty of new features that developers could use, according to Fisch, none of the newer versions of the engine could match the processing speed required for the physics simulation in Kingmakers that was provided by Unreal Engine 4.Along with all of this, Kingmakers will also feature co-op multiplayer for up to four players for the entirety of the campaign. This includes all mechanics, including the RTS ones where each player will be able to field their own armies.Kingmakers will be coming to PC as an Early Access game. While there is no release date, Fisch also notes that the title will eventually also come to consoles.

  • Deathground Gets New Trailer Announcing 2025 Release Window
    gamingbolt.com
Developer Jaw Drop Games has released a new trailer for its co-op survival horror title Deathground. The trailer, which you can check out below, also reveals that the game will be coming to PC in 2025.While light on details, the trailer for Deathground does give us a look at what a typical session of play will look like. Players will have to team up and sneak around as they try to avoid being detected by deadly dinosaurs.Deathground is primarily focused on stealth, and the trailer doesnt show many ways that players can use to fight back against the massive dinosaurs that are hunting them down. Getting spotted by a dinosaur can give players some room to try and escape as they try to look for another hiding spot, but often also ends with the brutal death of the player.Deathground was originally announced all the way back in August 2023. The title was announced during that years Future Games Show with a trailer, which you can also check out here. The title can be played solo as well as in co-op, where players will have to team up with two other players as they take on various levels in the game. Each level will have a number of objectives that players will have to complete before they escape, which can range from finding specific items or using a certain machine before the dinosaurs can find you.It also provides players with a host of tools that they will have to use in order to complete their missions. These tools can range from something as simple as a bottle that you throw to distract a dinosaur, to more complex ones like miniature hacking devices.According to Jaw Drop Games, Deathground, which has been in development since at least July 2020, is currently undergoing a private Alpha test. This test is available to those that backed the games crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Beta testing is the next step for Deathground, with the studio saying that it is on the horizon.More details about Deathground were revealed by designer Joseph Shirley in an interview with GamingBolt back in September 2023. In the interview Shirley talks about a host of subjects, ranging from inspirations to how playing in co-op can affect gameplay. For Deathground, we drew inspiration from a wide range of sources, games such as Alien Isolation, GTFO, and Dino Crisis, but also movies such as Jurassic Park played a role in shaping the game, said Shirley. There really is something terrifying about watching characters navigate failing infrastructure whilst being stalked by dinosaurs. We wanted to create the tension and fear that evoked, creating an immersive experience that captures the same sense of terror.Shirley also spoke about how replay value is going to be an important aspect of Deathground, with concepts like AI threats and procedurally-generated objectives allowing players to replay the same levels while still having new experiences.Weve put a lot of emphasis on replay value in Deathground, and players can expect a good degree of variation across playthroughs and a tailored experience each time they dive into the game, explained Shirley. The AI threats, procedural objective elements and character classes will force you to take different approaches each play through.Check out the rest of the interview for more details about Deathground.

  • The FCC is probing Chicago public radio station WBEZ over on-air sponsorships
    www.theverge.com
Chicagos WBEZ is among 13 NPR and PBS member radio stations being investigated by the Federal Communications Commission as the Trump administration looks to tighten its control over public news organizations. The probes launched by FCC Chair Brendan Carr in January focus on whether on-air sponsorships aired by NPR and PBS-affiliated broadcasters comply with regulations around on-air sponsorships, known in media as underwriting. Public stations can broadcast nonpromotional announcements acknowledging financial support but are otherwise prohibited from running commercials. The Chicago Sun Times reports that WBEZ received a request for information regarding its underwriting practices from the FCC on February 28th, with a deadline to provide the requested details by the end of March. We can confirm that we received the letter from the FCCs enforcement bureau requesting detailed information about underwriting announcements that air on WBEZ, an unnamed WBEZ spokesperson told the publication. We adhere to FCC underwriting guidelines and are confident that any review will demonstrate compliance with these guidelines.Carr said hes concerned that underwriting announcements from NPR and PBS member stations may cross the line into prohibited commercial advertisements, and that such occurrence would undermine any case for continuing to fund NPR and PBS with taxpayer dollars. FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez told The Verge in January that the investigation is yet another Administration effort to weaponize the power of the FCC.About 4.6 percent of WBEZs total operating revenue last year came from the publicly funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting non-profit, totaling about $1.47 million. The investigation into WBEZ comes as its parent company Chicago Public Media deals with financial challenges. It recently announced that 35 staffers had accepted voluntary buyouts as part of the companys cost-reduction efforts.See More:

  • GM blocks dealership from installing Apple CarPlay retrofit kits in EVs
    www.theverge.com
GM is shutting down a dealership service that offered the installation of a third-party Apple CarPlay upgrade kit for its EVs, citing concerns that the product could affect critical safety features in its vehicles, The Drive reports.A spokesperson from GM told The Drive that Aftermarket services that introduce features not originally designed, thoroughly tested, and approved by GM may cause unintended issues for customers. These issues could affect critical safety features and may also void portions of the vehicles warranty.Back in 2023, people were not happy with the decision by GM to remove smartphone mirroring features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, from its EVs. (It has kept the mirroring functions in its gas-powered vehicles.) At the time, GMs VP of software, Scott Miller, said it allowed EV-centric features to work better, such as battery preconditioning when navigating to a destination. After GMs decision, an enterprising company called White Automotive and Media Services (WAMS) developed and offered a kit in late 2024. The kit restored phone mirroring features back into Chevy and GMC EVs with OEM like integration. However, due to the complexity of the kit, WAMS only offered it for professional installation at just one dealership: LaFontaine Chevrolet in Plymouth, Michigan. Now, speaking to The Drive, the dealership says GM has instructed them to stop offering the WAMS kit. WAMS seems to be in limbo: the product is listed as discontinued on its website, as spotted by GM Authority earlier this week. The website offers an explanation:To Our Valued Customers:We have made the difficult decision to discontinue this product. Rather than removing it from our website entirely, we wanted to leave this notice so customers are aware of its discontinuation. This was not a decision we made lightly, but due to a variety of factors, continuing to offer this product is no longer viable in the long term.We sincerely appreciate your interest, enthusiasm, and support, and we hope you understand our position. Thank you for being a part of our community.GM hasnt said whether it will somehow disable the already installed kits.See More:

In IGN's review of Rise of the Ronin, Will Borger wrote, "Rise of the Ronin marries a cool historical setting, Team Ninjas mastery of tough-but-fair combat, and some smart RPG design to make a game that is immediately compelling, and even more fun with friends. Its full of cool little touches, whether its throwing something at an enemy with the grappling rope or dropping from your glider onto your horse. Unfortunately, its also a game full of map clutter, bloated systems, and a truly absurd amount of junk loot, and the time I spent clearing out everything that didnt spark joy and dealing with all these non-essential systems made me pine for a leaner, meaner, more focused game. Rise of the Ronin is excellent when it has the courage to be itself and lean into its challenging, rewarding fighting; too often, however, it feels stuck in indecision, torn between what it wants to be and what it feels its expected to be, and not even the best samurai can overcome that."Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. • Kaiserpunk Review
    www.ign.com
Kaiserpunk has an immediately interesting premise: rebuilding society from the ashes of an alternate timeline World War I that raged so much longer and more mercilessly that it left the survivors in a post-apocalyptic struggle for survival. When it leans into being a city builder with a roaring 20s flair, that scenario can really shine. But the diet grand strategy game playing out on its dissonant strategic map, as well as a host of technical issues that I could maybe forgive if this were an Early Access launch instead of the full thing, make me wish I'd perished in 1916.Each game of Kaiserpunk begins with laying out a few ramshackle houses and modest farms on one of its varied but fairly flat maps based on real-world locations, which range from Seattle, Washington to Sydney, Australia. It's neat that the lower-tier buildings look like they were made from salvaged materials, often sporting brand names of forgotten, pre-war businesses. Each lot is a quaint and stylish little diorama, and I enjoyed watching my rough-and-tumble laborers go about their days.Kaiserpunk Gameplay ScreenshotsThis continues up the social ladder as you keep adding more specialized and higher-paid citizens, with the most privileged residences creating almost idyllic early 20th Century neighborhoods that could make me forget the world fell apart for but a moment. This sense of transforming the ruined landscape into a place worth living in again is satisfying, and there's a deep and decently entertaining web of production chains underneath it all, too.The series Kaiserpunk is most comparable to is Anno, in that the goal is to work your way up from vegetable gardens to eventually manufacturing your own televisions and radios, supporting a growing middle and upper class with increasingly lavish and specific desires that must be maintained. Especially at smaller scales, I found a good amount of enjoyment in this urban planning. And it's pretty cool that when I shape my society through the different settlement tiers by selecting policies, my main government building changes to reflect my values.Kaiserpunk seems to have no idea what scale it wants to tell stories on. But while there are dozens of resources and all kinds of unlockable buildings from schools to clinics to better the lives of my people, those same systems fall flat in other ways that make the world less believable. Nobody minds living next to a steel mill, for example not even the wealthiest citizens. Everyone has a desire for health and education, but this is simply dealt with by plopping public service buildings. The smog from factories never causes health to decline, from what I could tell. This encourages building hodgepodge settlements that don't really look like or develop in the way real cities do.The whole thing comes apart even more when you get out onto the strategic map. For one thing, Kaiserpunk seems to have no idea what scale it wants to tell stories on. In my city, I'm concerned with whether my 200 machinists have enough gramophones to fulfill their luxury needs. But then on the strategic map, "Central Europe" is a single, indivisible political region. It's very similar to the map from the board game Risk. This really does not mesh at all.If they wanted to have a strategic layer, they should have gone for something much more modest. A lot of the theming is already very British, so why not zoom in and spend just as much time on a post-apocalyptic UK? Why would these devastated city-states rising from the ashes be out trying to conquer the world like it's Hearts of Iron? And the strategic systems don't do much for me either. For one thing, the turn-based battle animations are comical, almost slapstick, and I don't feel like that was intentional. The mechanics are complex but cumbersome, and don't provide a lot of information after the fact on why you won or lost. Things like terrain type and your ability to supply your armies can eventually change the course of a war, but it's all kind of half-baked and impenetrable. The big picture comes across like there was a strong idea for an interwar city builder that then had a second, half-finished game nailed onto it. You could lose this whole world map layer and I honestly think it would be a better experience. Maybe you could abstract the defense industry, which eventually has you building your own tanks and artillery, as something you have to do to secure your borders rather than worrying about conquest. There are diplomatic and scientific victory paths if you don't want to focus on guns and bombs, but you can't really ignore the world map if you want to be successful at either of them. For what's supposed to be a finished product, the polish simply isn't here. The AI on the default Normal difficulty setting is fairly ruthless, too. As a new player, I felt like they were always way ahead of me by the time I ran into them, which is discouraging. When I'm playing a city builder, I don't want my life to be completely without struggle. But since I'm getting plenty of that trying to provide for my people anyway, the idea that I can be vastly outpaced by the AI if I don't develop my industries as quickly and efficiently as possible seems excessive. It's not tuned well, especially when you're first learning the ropes. And that's all before we even get to the technical issues. Like I said, if this were an Early Access game, I might cut it a little more slack. But for what's supposed to be a finished product, the polish simply isn't here. There's a lot of little technical things that come across as sloppy, like the fact that the resource counters on the strategic map don't update in real time when the clock is going. You have to close the map and open it again.Len's Top 10 City BuildersI just reviewed Cities: Skylines 2, so let's take a look back and rank the best city builders over the ages.See AllYou can't click on different columns to sort the resource screen, which is very frustrating given how many of them there are. The tooltip for population needs fulfillment doesn't provide enough information, so I frequently found myself having to tediously go around clicking on individual houses to figure out what people wanted more of like I was doing a door-to-door survey. The economy balance can be quite odd at the higher levels too, where simply building a single high-rise full of specialists will print money even if they're unhappy, but then trying to provide for their needs ends up being more expensive overall. It's supposed to be the other way around, where happier citizens pay more taxes. But the balance doesn't always swing that way. Most of all, though, it's pretty buggy. All the way up until the day before this review, I was running into multiple issues with saves suddenly deciding not to load after I'd played a given city for a long time. Im glad this seems to have gotten a last minute fix, but that's the ultimate vibe killer when you've put more than 25 hours into a run. At one point, when I hadn't met any other factions yet, I got a notification that "the enemy" had launched a firebombing campaign on my city that resulted in more than a dozen buildings randomly bursting into flames. Who did this, exactly? Some raiders hiding out in a canyon down the road?
