  • People keep putting fake walls in front of Teslas
    www.theverge.com
Kyle Pauls fake wall test. | Image: Kyle Paul (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KyIWpAevNs">YouTube</a>)Someone has responded to YouTuber Mark Robers Tesla fake wall test with a video that also tries to address the question of whether the companys Full Self-Driving (FSD) features would detect a Wile E. Coyote-style road obstruction in the real world. Creator Kyle Paul posted his video Thursday and included two Teslas with FSD: a Model Y equipped with a HW3 computer and a Cybertruck that comes with the latest HW4 / AI4 system and cameras, Not a Tesla App reports. In the original video, Rober, an engineer who went viral after his package thief glitter bombs videos, tested whether Teslas camera-based Full Self-Driving (FSD) system can automatically stop before plowing through a wall painted as a road stretching into the horizon. It didnt, people raised (many) questions, and we tried to answer a few of them.In Pauls video, the Tesla Model Y with confirmed FSD (in this case, version 12.5.4.2) didnt fare better than Robers he had to manually stop the vehicle before it crashed into the fake wall that, to my human eyes, doesnt look quite as convincing. Not all is lost for Tesla, though, as Pauls test of the Cybertruck with FSD version 13.2.8 had a better ending. It detected the wall and slowed down to a complete stop. You can watch both videos for yourself, whether its to check the science or just to take note of how many people have the means to build real-world Looney Tunes ACME walls.

  • Kyutai Releases MoshiVis: The First Open-Source Real-Time Speech Model that can Talk About Images
    www.marktechpost.com
Artificial intelligence has made significant strides in recent years, yet integrating real-time speech interaction with visual content remains a complex challenge. Traditional systems often rely on separate components for voice activity detection, speech recognition, textual dialogue, and text-to-speech synthesis. This segmented approach can introduce delays and may not capture the nuances of human conversation, such as emotions or non-speech sounds. These limitations are particularly evident in applications designed to assist visually impaired individuals, where timely and accurate descriptions of visual scenes are essential.Addressing these challenges, Kyutai has introduced MoshiVis, an open-source Vision Speech Model (VSM) that enables natural, real-time speech interactions about images. Building upon their earlier work with Moshia speech-text foundation model designed for real-time dialogueMoshiVis extends these capabilities to include visual inputs. This enhancement allows users to engage in fluid conversations about visual content, marking a noteworthy advancement in AI development.Technically, MoshiVis augments Moshi by integrating lightweight cross-attention modules that infuse visual information from an existing visual encoder into Moshis speech token stream. This design ensures that Moshis original conversational abilities remain intact while introducing the capacity to process and discuss visual inputs. A gating mechanism within the cross-attention modules enables the model to selectively engage with visual data, maintaining efficiency and responsiveness. Notably, MoshiVis adds approximately 7 milliseconds of latency per inference step on consumer-grade devices, such as a Mac Mini with an M4 Pro Chip, resulting in a total of 55 milliseconds per inference step. This performance stays well below the 80-millisecond threshold for real-time latency, ensuring smooth and natural interactions. In practical applications, MoshiVis demonstrates its ability to provide detailed descriptions of visual scenes through natural speech. For instance, when presented with an image depicting green metal structures surrounded by trees and a building with a light brown exterior, MoshiVis articulates:I see two green metal structures with a mesh top, and theyre surrounded by large trees. In the background, you can see a building with a light brown exterior and a black roof, which appears to be made of stone. This capability opens new avenues for applications such as providing audio descriptions for the visually impaired, enhancing accessibility, and enabling more natural interactions with visual information. By releasing MoshiVis as an open-source project, Kyutai invites the research community and developers to explore and expand upon this technology, fostering innovation in vision-speech models. The availability of the model weights, inference code, and visual speech benchmarks further supports collaborative efforts to refine and diversify the applications of MoshiVis.In conclusion, MoshiVis represents a significant advancement in AI, merging visual understanding with real-time speech interaction. Its open-source nature encourages widespread adoption and development, paving the way for more accessible and natural interactions with technology. As AI continues to evolve, innovations like MoshiVis bring us closer to seamless integration of multimodal understanding, enhancing user experiences across various domains.Check outthe Technical details and Try it here. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Bleach Rebirth of Souls Review in Progress
    www.ign.com
Editor's Note: This initial review in progress is based only on the PlayStation 5 version so far, with the PC version experiencing launch issues.Although Bleach is the flashiest member of the shonen anime big three, standing shoulder to shoulder with mega popular series like One Piece and Naruto, it has long suffered from middle child syndrome when it comes to arena fighter adaptations. Bleach Rebirth of Souls aims to break the cycle of run-of-the-mill anime fighters this series has previously been part of, delivering a unique action game that attempts to raise the genre to greater heights. Even though I still have a lot left to play before my final review, having only spent 10 hours with it since I received review code just before the Ultimate Edition went live yesterday, it's evident that developer Tamsoft has a deep respect for the anime. Every detail of its crisp character models is meticulously crafted, and the combat feels like it's been lifted straight out of the show, with a depth that begs to be explored. However, the story mode, where Ive spent most of my time so far, plays like a laughable attempt at a visual novel that was hobbled together as a last-second afterthought.Bleach Rebirth of Souls opens with a tutorial that puts its best foot forward its combat. Its easy to get overloaded with a bunch of confusing anime jargon as it explains how its health bar, counters, and super moves work, but heres the quick way to understand things: This is a 3D arena fighter with Super Smash Bros.s life stock system, Sekiros stance-breaking swordplay, and Bleachs unique visual flair. Unlike other arena fighters, which often have combat so shallow you only need to find a single combo or spam super moves to win matches, Bleach's combat feels like a challenging game of tug-of-war one where victories are clinched rather than mindlessly stomped out of opponents.Bleach Rebirth of Souls Gameplay ScreenshotsEach sword swing feels snappy and weighty as you teleport around the screen, ambushing your enemies from behind and breaking their guard. It never gets old to see large blocks of text wrap around freeze-framed characters with every successfully landed counter and super move. Even when you play Rebirth of Souls on its Standard Mode button layout, which streamlines things by letting you dish out flashy auto combos, it still harbors complex and unique mechanics specific to each character that warrant further exploration. That could be Uryu's long-ranged bow attacks or Yoruichi's in-your-face brawler style. Variety like that is important as I both decide on a main and try to understand how to defeat different characters. As a massive fan of the anime and manga's stunning artistry, stirring character development, and shocking plot twists, I had high hopes that Rebirth of Souls could deliver a worthwhile story mode. Sadly, Ive been disappointed big time. By and large, cutscenes in an anime fighter should act as a sparkly reward at the end of battle, meant to bring the momentum of a fight to a thrilling climax. Cutscenes in the story modes of Naruto and Dragon Ball Zs games are sometimes so well animated that they could serve as a substitute for watching the actual shows. That is not the case with Bleach. If anything, they nearly bring things to a screeching and embarrassing halt. The look of its combat may have a lot of tender love and care put into it, but the story moments between that action instead play out like a cheap visual novel. Outside of a few pre-rendered cutscenes, the SparkNotes version of the anime this story mode attempts to tell is a rushed, hobbled mess. Instead of being greeted by bombastic scenes where my favorite characters clash, I was met with Machinima-looking animations where in-game models would fart out energy waves at each other and stiffly fall to the ground. Even the emotionally heady scenes lose all sense of tension as its characters move around like clumsy action figures with limited points of articulation in bright, low-poly arenas. What's more, exciting moments like sword clashes and beam struggles lose all of their gravitas as these scenes incessantly cut to black with bright slashes on the screen that look less like a creative choice for dramatic effect and more like a placeholder for an animation that wasnt added in time. Combat's vibrant sword slashes feel at odds with the unevenly crafted cutscenes. If this was a genuine attempt to resemble a visual novel, it definitely missed the mark, as it feels more like an unfinished first draft and with review codes arriving so close to launch, its hard not to see this as an intentional hope that fans will buy-in based solely on the goodwill of the franchise. Which is a shame, because both its English and Japanese voice cast are putting in work with their vocal performances and the character models are faithful recreations that do look great in action. As if Bandai Namco took pointers from Invincible season 2s joke about how animators cut corners to make more scenes, Rebirth of Souls put all of its focus on the fights, and every moment outside of them looks like a fan-made animators first crack at recreating the anime as a result. But although the story mode has yet to wow me in the 10 hours Ive spent with it so far, theres still more to play with namely, the online and offline versus mode before I can settle on a final verdict. As it stands right now, Bleach Rebirth of Souls combat goes above and beyond a run-of-the-mill anime arena fighter, with a dense battle system and tons of love put into making each of its characters feel unique. That makes it all the more disappointing that its crisp character models, vibrant sword slashes, and stylish typography accompanying each super move feel wholly at odds with the animation in its unevenly crafted cutscenes. Instead of making me want to play through the animes sprawling story myself, it's only encouraged me to revisit the source material so that the emotional climaxes actually land. But despite not delivering on that lofty promise, Im keen to see if the versus modes will pick up the slack as I work toward my final review.Play

  • Adolescence Co-Creator Stephen Graham Teases Anthology Series and Reveals More Secrets from the Netflix Show
    www.ign.com
Spoilers for all four episodes of Adolescence below.Adolescence has quickly become the No. 1 show on Netflix, and now fans eager for a potential Season 2 have something new to look forward to. Speaking exclusively with IGN, series star, co-creator, and co-writer Stephen Graham shared some production secrets and confirmed hes open to exploring the format and themes of the show in new ways.Adolescence follows 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), his family, and their community after Jamie is accused of murdering his classmate. With just four episodes, each shot in a continuous hour-long take, the show has left viewers gutted, contemplative, and begging for more. And now theres a possibility that more might be coming. Will There Be More Episodes of Adolescence?Graham says he hasnt considered what happens to Jamie, his parents, and his sister after Episode 4 ends. No, no. I don't think I have. I love the way it ends because it ends in that bedroom where somehow this whole thing began, Graham says of the scene in the final episode where Jamies father Eddie (played by Graham) weeps in the boys bedroom and laments not doing more for his son. And I think the major thing we were talking about was that Eddie should have spent more time in that room. But just because the Millers story is over doesnt mean we wont see the Adolescence universe or the famous one-shot technique again. When asked if hed be open to a format like an anthology series, Graham confirms that the possibility is there. I don't think I could say anything, but I like that sentence of like an anthology series, Graham teases. Let's just say, Mm-hmm! The possibilities of that are - yes, there are possibilities of that.Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller in Adolescence. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix 2024That Adolescence Drone Shot Originally Had a Very Different EndingThe shows second hour takes place at Jamies school as police in charge of the case investigate the killing. The episode ends with an incredible drone shot in which the camera leaves the schools parking lot and travels high overhead to the site of the murder, where Eddie exits his van and leaves flowers on the ground. But Graham says they originally intended for the drone to keep flying without revisiting the scene of the crime. A wonderful executive at Netflix came up with an amazing idea, Graham says. (On Monday and Tuesday), the crew attached the camera to the drone and the drone just flew off, and it kept flying all over the countryside. But Wednesday night, (the executive) said, I have an idea. Why don't we bring the drone back down to meet Eddie? And (I said), we've got two days left! And he was like, I know, but this would be brilliant.Graham says that even with the decision to end Episode 2 with the reconceived drone shot, limited time and unfortunate weather almost scuttled the whole idea. Episode 2 of Adolescence ended with an intricate drone shot. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix 2024So we had to navigate that, Graham says. And what (also) happened was the wind. We got one (shot) which was a bit wobbly, and then the winds really ruined it. And we (thought we) had no chance, no opportunity. So we put Eddie back at the end of the school and (the episode) kind of ended there. So it had gone okay. But then that afternoon, everything just seemed to (work) like a jazz band. It was our final take on that episode. Everything went beautifully. It was just hitting the notes perfectly. And it just worked.Even with the drone sequence executed perfectly, technical difficulties meant the Adolescence production team had no idea it had worked. Everybody back at the base (had) no idea whether it had worked or not, because they'd lost picture! Graham says, explaining how the video feed from the drone-mounted camera went dark. When (the camera) got attached to the drone, they'd lost picture. So they had no idea whether we had it or not. So (when we realized we had it) that was exciting and wonderful.Owen Cooper as Jamie Miller, Erin Doherty as Briony Ariston in Adolescence. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix 2024Episode 3 Had Other Takes But the One Used Hit the Sweet SpotThe third episode of Adolescence consists almost entirely of a tense conversation between Jamie and his court-appointed psychologist (played by Erin Doherty). Graham says there were several completed takes that they considered using but ended up on the cutting room floor. There were actually two or three takes that we could have selected within that context, Graham says. They were all really great, but the take that we ended up going with was the one that we all felt in the end. It was a collective decision. We all felt that that was the one that really hit that sweet spot.Owen Cooper as Jamie Miller, Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller in Adolescence. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix 2024The Point of the One-Shot Format of AdolescenceWhile audiences have been amazed by the technical expertise required to make a series like Adolescence, Graham insists the single-shot technique was a narrative decision at heart. We wanted to take the audience on a journey, Graham says. With the first (episode), we knew that we could grab the audience and we could bring them along. The camera would then represent that kind of voyeuristic element and the audience would work out what's happening the same way as Eddie and the family work it out. It allows you to really immerse yourself in that process. And then when you get to (Episode) 2, you are piecing it together the same way as the police officers piecing it together. Then when it gets to (Episode) 3, you are learning about Jamie the same way that (Dohertys character) Briony is learning about him. And then when we get to (Episode) 4, we really see the impact that this has had on his family. It makes us go on the journey with them. It makes you think, Wow. Imagine being in that position. We made something with love, integrity, respect, and humility, Graham says. We basically threw this stone into a pond. And the ripple effect has been unbelievable. This interview has been formatted and condensed for clarity.

  • HomeKit Weekly: Automate your garden with Meross new HomeKit Smart Sprinkler Timer
    9to5mac.com
Winter in the southern US is coming to a close, so its almost time to break out the the sprinklers as warm weather arrives. Meross has been steadily expanding its lineup of HomeKit-compatible products, and its latest addition brings another option for smart outdoor watering to HomeKit.HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apples smart home framework. The Meross Smart Sprinkler Timer is a WiFi-enabled outdoor watering controller designed for garden irrigation, drip systems, and more. It offers full HomeKit integration, allowing users to control watering schedules via the Home app, Siri, or automation routines based on time or weather. One of the benefits of a product thats an accessory to a non-smart sprinkler setup is flexibility in the future. Some of the cool features include:Auto skip based on hyper-local smart weather adjustmentsWater usage tracking (inside the Meross app)Auto shut-off feature to prevent overwatering or flooding. It also shuts off automatically if the batteries are depleted. Set schedules in HomeKit or Meross app, ensuring plants and lawns get watered even when youre away from the houseWatering schedules run even if the devices lose an internet or Wi-Fi connection, though the weather-based adjustments require an active connection.Youll install it at the faucet, and the hose so all of the water flows through it.Differences between Meross Smart Sprinkler and Eve AquaThe biggest competitor for Meross is Eve with the Eve Aqua. Both products will work well with HomeKit, but some key differences exist between the products. Eve Aqua uses Thread for low-power, direct connectivity, resulting in faster response times in the Home app. On the other hand, Meross relies on Wi-Fi and a hub, but it supports up to 24 timers, making it a better option for larger or more complex watering setups. While Eve Aqua benefits from a hub-free design, Meross des adds water usage tracking and hyper-local weather-based watering skips, two features missing from Eve Aqua that help optimize watering.Overall, both products are great, though.Use cases with HomeKitWith HomeKit automations, you can set up the Meross Smart Sprinkler to come up at sunrise for optimal water and run for a set amount of time. You could also pair it with a HomeKit weather station to avoid watering when it rains. If you want to have some fun, you could leverage an outdoor motion sensor to scare away squirrels from your garden when motion is detected.Wrap upFor options to retrofit your sprinkler setup to HomeKit, Eve Aqua has been the only option for many years, so its great to see Meross release a new product. Eves Thread support is fantastic, but Meross also comes in at a much lower price point. You can buy the new Meross Smart Sprinkler on Amazon or directly from Meross.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed.
