• Why Balatros developer stays anonymous
    www.theverge.com
Balatro just won four Game Developers Choice Awards, including Game of the Year, but the person who made the game wasnt on stage to accept them.Instead, Playstack communications director Wout van Haldren spoke on behalf of Balatros developer, who goes by the alias LocalThunk, each time the game won an award. The team does that to give LocalThunk the freedom to work in the style that he likes, which we respect, Playstack marketing director Liz Cheng-Moore tells The Verge. Thats our job, van Haldren adds. Its an arrangement that the Playstack team figured out with LocalThunk ahead of other ceremonies like The Game Awards, where Balatro won three awards and was nominated for Game of the Year. LocalThunk didnt want to be public, but he also didnt want to be disrespectful to fans and the industry, so now the Playstack team accepts his awards on his behalf.Balatro was one of the biggest hits of 2024, launching after a series of popular demos to wide acclaim. Months after its initial launch, the game launched on iOS and Android, and as of January, its sold more than 5 million copies. LocalThunk was at the Game Developers Conference this week meeting with other developers, but van Haldren and Cheng-Moore think hell generally remain anonymous to the public. Its not that he wants to be the next Banksy, Cheng-Moore says. He just prefers not to be in the spotlight. His mysteriousness extends to how he communicates with the team and makes games. For example, Cheng-Moore tells me that his recent blog was something that he talked about one day and launched the next. Its fully done by him, Cheng-Moore says. And with Balatros upcoming gameplay update, which is set to launch sometime this year, I think hes just going to surprise us one day and hes going to say, hey, heres the 1.1 build, van Haldren says. I think he works best with that freedom, because thats how he made Balatro in the first place. He had no timelines, no stress. He could just tinker, and thats how the magic happened.van Haldren adds that I have not seen a single thing so far that hes working on. And I kind of like it because Ill be surprised as well.See More:

  • Another US Navy destroyer that fought off missiles in the Red Sea has been sent to guard America's southern border

The US military is sending another warship to guard the southern border with Mexico. The destroyer USS Spruance, which fought the Houthis in the Red Sea, will operate off the West Coast. It's the latest military asset to be deployed as part of Trump's border security efforts.A second US Navy destroyer that spent months battling the Houthis in the Red Sea is being sent to the southern border to support military operations there. The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance left its home port of San Diego on Saturday to support efforts to "restore territorial integrity" at the southern border, US Northern Command said in a statement.NORTHCOM said that the deployment would contribute to the Pentagon's crackdown on maritime-related criminal activity, including weapons smuggling and illegal immigration. The Trump administration has made combating these issues and drug trafficking a priority and has dispatched a range of military assets to the US-Mexico border.Last weekend, the Navy sent USS Gravely, another guided-missile destroyer, to the southern border. Air Force Lt. Gen Alexus Grynkewich, the director of operations for the Joint Staff, told reporters Monday that the warship will be "involved in the interdiction mission for any of the drugs and whatnot that are heading in."The Spruance, like the Gravely, will be accompanied by a US Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment, operators that specialize in military operations at sea, such as counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, anti-immigration, and combat missions. USS Spruance transits San Diego Bay on March 22. US Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Claire M. Alfaro Destroyers like the Spruance bring a lot of firepower to a fight. They are equipped with 96 vertical launch system (VLS) cells carrying surface-to-air and land-attack missiles, as well as various guns, from the 5-inch deck gun to the Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) to machine guns. The ships also feature electronic warfare capabilities. It's not entirely unusual for these warships to partake in drug interdiction missions, especially since maritime smuggling efforts can be rather sophisticated.Gen. Gregory Guillot, the NORTHCOM commander, said that the Spruance's deployment as part of the southern border mission "brings additional capability and expands the geography of unique military capabilities working with the Department of Homeland Security.""With Spruance off the West Coast and USS Gravely in the Gulf of America, our maritime presence contributes to the all-domain, coordinated DOD response to the Presidential Executive Order and demonstrates our resolve to achieve operational control of the border," Guillot added. The Spruance and Gravely are being deployed for a mission very different from the Red Sea conflict in which both vessels fought. On their previous deployments, the Spruance and Gravely spent months shooting down missiles and drones launched by the Houthi rebels in Yemen as part of their ongoing attacks on military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Navy has rotated carrier strike groups in and out of the Red Sea repeatedly as part of its efforts to stop the Houthi attacks. Last weekend, the US began a fresh campaign against the rebels and has been hitting them with airstrikes for several days.

  • I often walked away to process my feelings when my son and I fought. I felt guilty for it, but it taught him a valuable lesson.

2025-03-23T13:47:02Z Read in app The author (left) walked away from her son (right) for a timeout when they fought. Courtesy of Melissa Drake This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Whenever my son and I had big disagreements, I would walk away and give myself a timeout to think.I felt guilty for abandoning him in those moments, but I had to prioritize my hurt. Now, as an adult, he said that move was my best parenting technique. When my son was younger, he was always quick to smooth things over when we would get into a disagreement or argument usually with a hug or an apology.Pushing the issues aside before we had the time to process them became a habit. However, when my son, Johnathan, became a teenager, he got into trouble with the law. Our disagreements became bigger and couldn't easily be solved with a hug.Sometimes, I was so blindsided by something Johnathan had done that I felt overwhelmed with anger and fear. His instinct was to repair things immediatelyto hug me, to smooth it overbut I couldn't. I needed space. To prevent myself from saying something I'd regret, I'd walk away and give myself time to think. I was in self-preservation mode, simply trying to process my emotions before I could even begin to repair our relationship.Physically walking away from my son felt like abandoning him, but years later, he told me it was a great parenting technique.I learned my time away also gave him time to thinkJohnathan is now an adult and living a happy life. While chatting about our experiences one day, he blurted out, "You taking that space was the best parenting move you had."Confused, I asked him to explain. He told me that when he rushed in to smooth things over, it was an attempt to feel better, presumably to release any guilt or shame associated with his actions. However, he now had space to think when met with a literal timeout.Johnathan told me this time away from each other made him reflect and sit with what he'd done. In addition to making sense of his actions, he could easily and clearly see how he hurt me in the process. His conscience was online, and the time I took to myself also allowed him to really think about things. That result was unintentional but highly effective.I felt guilty for taking care of myself firstAt our worst, I worried I might have said something I'd regret if I didn't give myself space. And that, more than anything, was what I wanted to avoid.Still, I felt guilty. It felt unnatural to walk away when I only wanted to pull him close. Refusing his request for affection was damn near impossible at the time. Purposefully rejecting my child is not something loving mothers do, I told myself. But I also knew that my hurt needed attention first. I needed to care for myself before I could care for him.Stepping back was exactly what we both neededWhen I asked Johnathan what his biggest takeaway from this experience was, he told me that my timeout clearly demonstrated that "you can't fix everything with words."He also indicated that this process showed him when relationships rupture, it takes time to heal.Looking back, I realize my instincts served us both. My son learned that words alone can't always fix things; time and action matter just as much.I learned that trusting myself, even when it felt uncomfortable, was the best thing I could do for both of us.Now, when I see him navigate conflicts in his own life, I recognize the ripple effect of those moments. He doesn't rush to smooth things over; he listens, reflects, and allows others the same grace we unknowingly offered one another in the most challenging times.

  • Hazelights Split Fiction Could Go From Game to Film
    gizmodo.com
Less than a month after its launch, Hazelight Studios newest video game Split Fictionmay be the next video game adapted for film. Per Variety, multiple top studios are currently in a bidding war for the games rights. Story Kitchen, which has helped with recent adaptations of Tomb Raiderand theSonicmovies, is assembling a cast, writer, and director to make it more enticing to prospective buyers. At time of writing, neither Story Kitchen or Hazelightspecifically, its very public founder/creative director Josef Fareshave commented. Still, an adaptation seems likely. Hollywoods grabbing any game it can to bring to film or TV, andSplit Fictionhas been pretty successful. The game, which is played entirely in co-op, stars aspiring writers Mio and Zoe. During a meeting with a literary agent, a machine made to steal ideas traps them in each others storiesso Mio is in Zoes fantasy story, and Zoe in Mios sci-fi adventureand they have to work together to get out. Based off that premise, you can imagine how itd make for a fun film, should it actually get adapted. It also helps that Split Fiction has been pretty popular: it opened to strong reviews and sold over 1 million copies just days after launch, which grew to 2 million copies within a week. For publisher EA, this is its latest play at bringing its games to film and TV; aMass Effectshow is coming to Prime Video, and Hazelights 2021 co-op hitIt Takes Twois also being adapted in the near future.
