  • Barack Obama joins Bluesky
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:8:20 AM PDT March 23, 2025Image Credits:JIM WATSON/AFPBarack Obama joins BlueskySocial network Bluesky, an alternative to X built on open source technologies, has scored a big win in terms of attracting notable users to its platform. The company on Sunday confirmed that former president Barack Obama has joined its service. Bluesky OOO Rose Wang replied to a post where someone wondered if the account posting as Obama was legitimately him by writing Confirmed! In his first few posts on the platform, Obama celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), calling it a reminder that change is possible when we fight for progress. The former president maintains a large following on other social media platforms, including X and Facebook, where he has 130.6 million followers and 55 million followers, respectively. However, Elon Musks X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has lost a number of users to alternative social networks, including Bluesky, after the 2024 U.S. elections. Musk used X to campaign for President Trump and promote MAGA-aligned political views. He also now holds a prominent position in Trumps circle thanks to his involvement with DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), which has been working to reduce the federal government workforce, cut spending, and dismantle government agencies. Not surprisingly, many left-leaning U.S. users no longer want to participate on X. Their exodus from the platform led to a large bump in user growth for Bluesky in late 2024. Today, the new social network has over 33 million users and is continuing to grow. Other U.S. politicians are already active on Bluesky, including well-known names like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Al Green, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who became the first person on Bluesky to hit a million followers, as well as many other representatives, senators, and governors. • Browser Use, the tool making it easier for AI agents to navigate websites, raises $17M
    techcrunch.com
We may not have an agreed-upon definition of AI agent yet, but a multitude of startups want to create agentic tools to automate various tasks online. One such firm, Browser Use, has attracted a ton of interest from developers and investors thanks to its solution that makes websites more readable for AI agents.Browser Use told TechCrunch that it has raised a sizable $17 million seed funding round led by Felicis Astasia Myers with participation from Paul Graham, A Capital, and Nexus Venture Partners. The companys funding hasnt previously been reported.Browser uses website.Browser Use, part of Y Combinators 2025 winter batch, has gained notoriety in recent months. Chinese startup Butterfly Effects use of Brower Use in its viral Manus tool drove awareness to new heights.Magnus Mller and Gregor Zunic founded Browser Use last year through ETH Zurichs Student Project House accelerator. Mller had been working on web-scraping tools for years, and met Zunic in 2024 while the pair were getting their masters degrees in data science. Together, according to Mller, they came up with the idea of combining web scraping with data science to prompt a browser to perform a task.Mller and Zunic built a Browser Use demo in five weeks and it took off. Subsequently, they open-sourced it. Browser Use essentially breaks down the buttons and elements of a website into a more digestible, text-like format for agents. This helps the agents understand the different options and make decisions autonomously.A lot of agents rely on vision-based systems and try and navigate websites through screenshots, and in [the] process, things break, Mller said. We convert [websites] into something agents can understand. This approach means we can run the same tasks again and again at a cheaper cost.Theres an increasing number of AI companies that want to make their agents interact with websites more gracefully, and Mller thinks Browser Use can become a fundamental layer serving this need. He added that more than 20 companies in the current Y Combinator Winter batch used Browser Use for their own requirements. There are companies coming to us and saying, What can we do to make it easier for agents to navigate our website? Mller said. There are sites for example, LinkedIn that change the way the website works all the time, so agents often fail on sites like those.According to Myers, Felicis has been actively looking at the AI agents space for the past several years, and Browser Use felt like the right opportunity to grow the firms portfolio there. She said that the companys founding team and its open-source-first approach sealed the dealWe think web AI agents are the next frontier that really helps with the end-to-end automation of human tasks, Myers told TechCrunch. [W]eb AI agents are this dynamic bridge between static pre-trained models that are mostly text-focused in the ever-changing digital landscape.

  • Radisson Resort & Spa in Lonavala by Malik Architecture
    archeyes.com
Radisson Resort & Spa | Bharath RamamruthamLonavala, once a tranquil hill station in the Sahyadris, has undergone rapid urbanization, losing its natural and historical character. The Radisson Resort & Spa Lonavala sits within a predominantly residential neighborhood, facing the challenge of balancing increasing density with a connection to nature. Divided across two separate plots interrupted by a planned accessway, the project negotiates regulatory frameworks emphasizing built density over spatial experience, making its architectural response critical in preserving a sense of openness and place.Radisson Resort & Spa Technical InformationArchitects1-4: Malik ArchitectureLocation: Lonavala, Maharashtra, IndiaArea: 11,148 m2 | 120,000 Sq. Rather than imposing a rigidly defined structure onto the site, the architecture unfolds as a journey, allowing the visitor to traverse built and unbuilt spaces seamlessly. This spatial strategy draws inspiration from regional archetypes, particularly fortifications and water structures. Bastions, large masonry walls, and stepped courts (kunds) define the site, creating a terrain that feels simultaneously ancient and contemporary. The resorts organization prioritizes public-private permeability, ensuring that the architectural language remains adaptable to both flexible and fixed programs.Traditional Indian architectural elementscourtyards, verandahs, thick masonry walls, and deep shadingare reinterpreted to suit modern hospitality demands while preserving their climatic and cultural relevance. The shaded atrium courtyard serves as a transitional space, mitigating heat gain while reinforcing a sense of communal interaction. Elevated room blocks hover above the landscape as abstract volumes encased in louvered secondary walls, which enhance privacy while maintaining a dialogue with the surrounding greenery.By allowing nature to be the protagonist, the project challenges conventional hospitality design norms, replacing the standard Building as Object with Building as Landscape.Radisson Resort & Spa Climatic AdaptationMaterial selection for the Radisson Lonavala is rooted in local tradition. The predominant use of black basalt and wood grounds the structure within its geographical context and reinforces sustainable construction practices. Volcanic stone excavated directly from the site is reintegrated into the architecture, minimizing transportation impact and preserving material authenticity. In contrast to resort developments that rely on imported, non-contextual materials, this approach fosters a more profound material continuity with Lonavalas historic built environment.Lonavalas subtropical, monsoon-driven climate necessitates passive cooling strategies. The resorts deep verandahs, thick stone walls, and cross-ventilation mechanisms mitigate heat while reducing dependency on artificial cooling systems. The naturally ventilated atrium courtyard provides a shaded core, ensuring thermal comfort and fostering social interaction. One of the projects most effective sustainability strategies is the adaptive use of topography. The sites natural slope accommodates service areas in a concealed basement, eliminating the need for large-scale excavation or mechanical ventilation. This tactic preserves the sites ecological integrity while enhancing operational efficiency.Beyond material selection, the projects commitment to sustainability extends to construction techniques. The masonry was executed by local artisans, preserving craft traditions while providing economic opportunities for the surrounding community. In an era where mass-produced construction dominates, this emphasis on human craftsmanship imbues the resort with a tactile, enduring quality.Radisson Resort & Spa PlansSite Plan | Malik ArchitectureFirst Level | Malik ArchitectureElevation | Malik ArchitectureSection | Malik ArchitectureAxonometric | Malik ArchitectureRadisson Resort & Spa Image GalleryAbout Malik ArchitectureMalik Architecture is a Mumbai-based firm founded by Kamal Malik and led by Arjun Malik, known for its site-responsive, sustainable, and material-driven designs. buildingsofnewengland.com
Overlooking the Salem Common, this 1818 Federal style dwelling has served as everything from a single-family home to a boarding house and ultimately an assisted living facility, showcasing that old buildings can always be repurposed into new uses. The home was built for Captain John Forrester, son of Simon Forrester, one of Salems most successful merchants. The Forrester Housewas purchased in the 1830s byGeorge Peabody, who added the one-story ballroom wing. Peabody lived in the house until 1892 and the buildinglater housedthe Salem Club, a mens social organization with over two-hundred well-connected members. In the 1920s, it became the Bertram Home for Aged Men, named after Captain John Bertram, who founded the organization in 1877 as a charitable residence providing housing and socialization space for aged men in Salem. The home had fallen into disrepair when it was closed in 1988, to reopen two years later as the first free-standing assisted living community for men and women in Massachusetts, today known as the Bertram House.

  • Protecting your daughter from deepfakes and online abuse
    www.foxnews.com
Published March 23, 2025 10:00am EDT close Deepfakes and digital doubles without consent turn AI into a bombshell issue Fox News senior correspondent Claudia Cowan analyzes the impact of artificial intelligence on the entertainment industry on 'Fox News Sunday.' Most of us have at least one young woman in our lives that we cherish a daughter, niece or goddaughter, for example. Well, this International Womens Day, I learned something that should be concerning to us all. Fully96% of all deepfakes artificial intelligence-generated images and videos that use someones likeness are pornographic and target women without their consent. One well-known case involved an Australian law student who discovered that manipulated pornographic images of her were being shared online when she was just 18. But this isnt an isolated incident. According to arecent survey of women in the U.S., AI deepfakes are among the types of online abuse that a significant number of women face despite being a relatively new technology. But this isnt the only type of online abuse women face.According to the same survey, one in four women in the U.S. say theyve experienced online abuse, including cyberbullying, doxxing, sexual harassment, trolling and AI deepfakes. And young women between the ages of 18 and 34 appear to experience much higher rates of online abuse than older generations.STAY PROTECTED & INFORMED! GET SECURITY ALERTS & EXPERT TECH TIPS SIGN UP FOR KURTS THE CYBERGUY REPORT NOW A woman with her daughter working on a laptop (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)Why are younger women at higher risk?It probably has a lot to do with how much time younger people spend online.Research shows, to no ones surprise, that younger generations use social media twice as much as older generations (80% versus 42%, respectively). However, it also indicates that women use it more than men.Data privacy also plays a role. A recent study showed younger generations are generally less concerned about keeping their personal information private compared to older generations. Growing up in a digital-first world, many younger people appear to be desensitized to data collection and are more willing to share personal information online. That, in turn, puts them at higher risk of cybercrimes and abuse. So, what can you do to help?If you are concerned about this, and you should be, there are several steps you can take to protect your female loved ones from online abuse and empower them to navigate the digital world safely. A woman working on her laptop (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)1. Talk to them about online privacyWe live in a world where people constantly share thoughts, pictures and videos. Telling a 22-year-old to stop posting online altogether probably wont get you far, but encouraging them to limit who can see their information is a reasonable compromise. Here are some things you can discuss:Setting social media profiles to "private" so photos, videos and personal details arent easily accessible to strangers.Beingselective about who they accept as friends and followers. How social media platforms are designed to beaddictive. The constant validation from likes and comments especially from strangers can make young women more vulnerable to online predators and cyberbullies. ("The Social Dilemma" documentary provides an in-depth look at how platforms exploit these behaviors.)2. Remove personal information from the internet (especially people search sites)In the survey exploring the experiences of women in the U.S. with online abuse,65% of respondents said theyve been negatively affected by having their personal information online. Why? Because online bullies, stalkers and scammers use publicly available information to target victims. But women can reduce the risk of online abuse by removing personal data from the internet:Searchingtheir name on Google and identifying which sites have their personal data.Optingout of people search websites, which often list names, addresses, phone numbers and even relatives.Using apersonal data removal serviceto automate the process and keep their information off these databases in the long term. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time.Check out my top picks for data removal services here.3. Make sure they have support and resourcesEven with the best precautions, online abuse can still happen. If you have four young female relatives or friends aged 7-21, statistically, it's likely that three of them have faced some form of online harm in the past year. One of the most powerful things you can do is let them know they have someone to turn to. Online abuse, particularly deepfake pornography and revenge porn, is often designed to humiliate, isolate and silence victims. Knowing they have support can help them regain control and fight back. If someone you love is dealing with online abuse, here are some critical resources:Crisis Text Line: By texting HOME to 741741, individuals can connect with trained crisis counselors who offer immediate emotional support and guidance during moments of crisis, helping them manage overwhelming emotions and find calm.National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Calling or texting 988 connects individuals with trained crisis counselors who provide immediate support for suicidal thoughts, mental health crises or other forms of emotional distress, offering a lifeline to those in urgent need.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE Women working on their laptops (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?4. • Long Seen As The Pandemic Of The Poor, TB Is A Threat To Us All
    www.forbes.com
8-year-old Asma, a TB patient who nears completion of her treatment, receives consultation at the ... More Government General Hospital Samanabad, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The Global Fund/Vincent BeckerDespite being preventable and curable, tuberculosis (TB) remains a persistent health threat across the world. TB is now the number one infectious disease killer worldwide, causing 1.25 million deaths in 2023. As a respiratory infection prone to drug resistance, TB poses a persistent threat to global health security.Progress against the disease rebounded quickly after the disruptions caused by COVID-19, but recent reductions in development assistance for health pose a serious threat to sustaining this momentum. Many of the most affected countries face significant gaps in funding for tests and treatments. Yet any let-up in the fight against TB will only increase the costs and risks.TB is an extremely dangerous disease. In 2023, an estimated 10.8 million people fell ill with TB worldwide. In fact, new TB cases have been on an upward trend since 2020. In our hyper-interconnected world, TB can be found in every major city in every country. A person with active, untreated TB can spread the disease to as many as 10 to 15 people in a single year. The 1.25 million deaths caused by TB in 2023 reflect a fatality rate of almost 12%, far higher than COVID-19. Most of these deaths are avoidable. The vast majority of TB cases are drug sensitive, meaning that they can be cured using relatively inexpensive, if somewhat protracted treatment. The primary challenges in fighting this form of TB are to find those who have fallen ill, to get them on treatment and to ensure they complete it. Given that most TB cases occur in poor and marginalized populations, none of these challenges are straightforward to overcome.Yet there is also a far nastier form of TB. In 2023, an estimated 400,000 people developed different types of drug resistant TB, which are much more difficult to treat, and far more likely to cause death. Because drug-resistant TB is hard to diagnose, and so costly and complex to treat, only 2 in 5 people who got drug-resistant TB received treatment in 2023. Not all of those treated survived, and most of those who didnt, died. Drug-resistant TB is one of the biggest causes of death from antimicrobial resistance.Looked at through a global health security lens, the nightmare scenario is a serious proliferation in drug-resistant versions of TB, given how hard it is to treat and how deadly it is. This could happen through untreated people with drug-resistant TB infecting others. But it could also happen because people with drug-sensitive TB fail to complete their treatment, allowing the pathogen to resurface in drug-resistant form. We must also recognize that the processes of genetic evolution that produce drug-resistance are always in motion, so the threat of even more resistant or easy to transmit versions of the disease cannot be discounted.Failing to control TB creates huge risks for everyone. Right now, TB is the pandemic of the poor, with most of the deaths occurring in the poorest communities, people living with HIV, or in otherwise marginalized populations, such as displaced people and refugees, prisoners, and those who inject drugs. Stigma and discrimination impede access to life-saving services and exacerbate the vulnerability of such populations. But left unchecked, TB is a threat to us all. Remember that it is less than 100 years since TB was the biggest killer in almost all the rich nations in the world. In addition to this health security imperative, there is also a compelling economic argument for investing to defeat TB. Given that it disproportionally affects those of working age, and can be costly and complex to treat, TB generates huge costs in terms of lost productivity and health system expenditures. Investments in TB prevention, early detection and treatment yield extremely high returns.Despite the current turmoil in global health, there are reasons to be optimistic. At the last United Nations High Level Meeting on the Fight Against Tuberculosis, countries reaffirmed their commitment to global targets to end the disease. New innovations promise significant improvements in diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Market-shaping efforts led by global partners working with the private sector are delivering important price reductions in key TB commodities, making lifesaving tools more accessible and affordable. Investments in TB programs are also strengthening health and community systems, making them more inclusive, more resilient and better prepared for other health threats. In 2024, more people were accurately diagnosed and successfully treated for TB than ever before. This is not the moment to slow down the fight or turn our backs on TB. No, now is the moment to redouble our commitment to defeat the disease to save millions of lives and to safeguard our collective future. We have the tools, and we know what works. What we need is political will and money.
